LOCAL Leap of faith

Giving back

For the next four months Abby Beames is going to call Mexico home and then who knows. The 19 year old Mount Gambier girl has finished her gap year and is now set to test the waters as a volunteer overseas – an adventure that she hasn’t ruled out becoming a career. The St Martins Lutheran College graduate flew out of Melbourne last week and headed to Los Angeles, a connecting flight to San Diego and then the drive to Mexico where she will undergo her training through Youth With A Mission (YWAM). YWAM is an inter-denominational, non-profit Christian, missionary organisation that while not shying away from sharing the Christian faith and beliefs all over the world, it is about actions not words, as they work in disadvantaged communities across the globe. There are more than 18,000 volunteers worldwide and Abby is set to join that network. “I heard about YWAM through a friend and when I hadn’t really figured out what I wanted to do when I was getting to the end of my gap year I decided to look into it,” Abby said. “I had always thought about doing something like this, working overseas and helping other people, mission work, I guess and so that’s what I’m doing.” Once Abby completes her Mexican training, which trains the new volunteers across working in orphanages, homeless shelters, sports programs, and schools she will be sent out into the world. “I actually don’t know where I am spending my two months of volunteering,” Abby said. “It is a real leap of faith – it could be Uganda, Nepal – I really don’t know.” But after spending some time in Thailand with her school friend Saiyon Phelan, whose family lives in a small village, Abby realised that her adventure could well turn into a career. “I wanted to join the army but then after going through all the interviews and everything I thought I was too young to become an officer, which is what I was interested in,” she said. “I haven’t ruled out university either even if it is to get some qualifications but then returning to work in a third world country.” Getting an ATAR of 93 is what threw a spanner in the works. “I didn’t expect that and all of a sudden people are asking you about university and studying medicine or something like that and you start to think ‘is that what I should be doing?’” Abby said. “This will be a great way to see if mission work is what I want to do and then I can come back and sort out university or what comes next.” Abby really has no idea what to expect but knows that helping people can only be a good thing. She was hopeful her love of music – she is a great singer – will overcome early language barriers and the like when she heads to her volunteering destination. She has had a taste of volunteering through Meals on Wheels, as a school based volunteer, as well as programs through her local church. Abby has self-funded her volunteer journey and will again have to stump up the travel and living expenses money once she knows where she is heading from Mexico. She could have trained in Perth or Melbourne or at any number of location s across the world, but looked to expand her adventure with the South American training base.

Christmas is a time for giving and throughout the year members of Soroptimist International Mount Gambier work hard to raise funds to make a difference for local charities. Just before Christmas each year Soroptimist International donate money to worthy causes and in 2014 they had the pleasure of giving to local charities Royal Society for the Blind ($250), Ryder Cheshire Foundation for their Timor project ($500)and the annual Mayor’s Christmas Appeal ($500). Other donations were made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Fred Hollows Foundation and international Soroptimist projects. Soroptimist International is committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide. “We are a service organisation for all women who want to make a difference,” said Barbara Bushell, President of Soroptimist International, Mount Gambier.“The past 12 months has seen over 14 individual projects implemented. The Women Leaving Prison initiative provided practical support to women exiting the prison system is one such innovative project. Its success will likely see this project rolled out across South Australia. “Partnering with key service providers, business and Zonta Club of Adelaide saw the touring across the Limestone Coast of Walk In My Shoes a display featuring stories from survivors, coupled with a pair of shoes to represent how they walked out of domestic violence. This project aimed at raising awareness about the impacts of domestic violence and inspiring victims to seek help.”

They said what..?

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.”

They said what..?

LOCAL A night to remember right on our doorstep Mount Gambier’s Christine Judd was looking forward to a European holiday planned with a friend when circumstances conspired against her travelling companion being able to make the trip. Christine decided to brave it alone and in the end it was an inspired decision. As part of her trip, she ended up renting an apartment in Lucca, in Italy, that made her neighbours with opera star Michelle Buscemi and Mattia Campetti and the trio struck up a friendship that books set to have incredible spin offs for the artistic community locally. The duo and their accompanist Dario Tondelli, will be gracing the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage on February 14, but while the concert alone is an amazing coup, the fact they are willing to conduct workshops and a scholarship program for local talent looks set to be established. Michelle is originally from Melbourne and has performed on return visits home before, but to get this calibre of soprano, and her talented baritone partner Mattia, is an opportunity rarely presented in a regional centre. And basically the concert, workshops and potential scholarship have all stemmed from the most unlikely of friendships. “I was just sitting outside on a bench eating an icecream and I picked up she was Australian and we struck up a conversation,” Christine said. The Australian connection was realised and when the operatic couple realised Christine was travelling alone, they took her under their wing. “They couldn’t have been nicer, always inviting me to dinner and taking me places, it was an amazing experience,” she said. Christine sang with the duo at their stunning grand piano and was afforded a one on one performance from another of their con cert pianist friends. And once Christine returned to Australia, they all stayed in touch and what is being billed as One Enchanted Evening looks set to more than deliver. The first half of the February 14 concert will showcase the works of Puccini, Mozart and Rossini , with some traditional Italian songs and musical theatre to fill the second part of the program. The workshops will be held at the Mount Gambier Baptist Church on Friday, February 13, from 1pm with opportunities for one on one and group sessions, as well as a Q & A with the talented trio. The scholarship looks set to see a local singer afforded the opportunity to spend some time working alongside Michelle and Mattia in Lucca, as well as being part of a public performance. MICHELLE BUSCEMI Born in Melbourne, to Italian born parents, Michelle began her technical vocal studies with Gloden Mercer. She holds a Bachelor of Music Performance, DARIO TONDELLI In 2006 Dario (pictured) received his diploma in piano at the Conservatory “GB Martini” in Bologna with honours and is oriented especially toward the operatic repertoire voice. He has worked as a lounge pianist and director in theatres and festivals and has accompanied some of the biggest names in the industry.

Voice Degree (2005) from the Victorian College of the Arts under the tutelage of Anna Connolly and has participated in international masterclasses with Richard Bonynge, Valentino Barcellesi, Bernadette Manca di Nissa, Margherita Rinaldi, Bruno De Simone, Roberto Scandiuzzi and Robert Kettelson. Michelle was a finalist at distinguished Lyric Competitions in Australia, most notably the 2005 Herald Sun Aria Award and 2005 Covent Garden National Opera Awards where she was awarded the Lady Gallaghan Memorial Encouragement Award. Her outstanding performance at the ACCLAIM Comunale Award earned her a much sought after study scholarship at the Accademia of Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Firenze in 2006-2007. In Australia Michelle enjoyed great success, starring in numerous productions including Hansel and Gretel by Humperdink (Gretel) with OZ Opera Schools Touring Company (2005). She has a wide Musical Theatre repertoire, performing in over ten productions (1999 – 2001) with leading roles in The Sound of Music (Liesl), The Mikado (Yum-Yum), Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (The Narrator) and Fiddler on the Roof (Hodel). In 2006, during her time at the Accademia of the Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Michelle appeared as Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte adapted and directed by Gabriele Duma. She took the role of the Good Queen in the world premiere of Snow White by Luigi Zaninelli conducted by M° Michele Mariotti. She appeared as Micaela in an Italian tour (Rome, Fiesole) of La tragedie de Carmen with Opera-Oggi and covered the role of Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi. In October 2006, Michelle made her debut at the Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with the role of Serpetta in the highly acclaimed production of La Finta Giardiniera conducted by M° Enrique Mazzola and directed by Emilio Sagi. From 2007 Michelle performed as a solo artist in numerous concerts and festivals particularly in Tuscany. In 2009 she returned to perform in Australia, making her debut with Melbourne Opera as Musetta in La Bohème and performed Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, at Hammer Hall with Victorian Opera and Victorian Symphony Orchestra, directed by Richard Gill. In March Michelle sang the role of Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Victorian Opera directed by Richard Gill (Melbourne) and regional Victoria tour directed by Nicolas Carter, receiving great public success and critical acclaim. She currently resides in Italy and continues to study under Ayako Kotani, appearing regularly with the Lucca Opera Festival. MATTIA CAMPETTI Born in Lucca, Italy in 1982 Mattia began his vocal studies with the contralto Fernanda Piccini. He holds a degree in Cinema, Theatre and Music (Majoring in Music) from the University of Pisa where he graduated in 2007. From 2005 he studied with M° Massimo Morelli, with whom he maintained a collaborative partnership, realising numerous concerts for the Puccini and his Lucca Festival. This involved performing roles in the productions of Madama Butterfly La Bohéme, and Tosca and also a recital dedicated to Mozart which toured to Egypt. Mattia has performed many iconic roles in venues across Europe and his collaboration with Michelle has been another successful chapter in his amazing career.

For more information on the concert, workshops or scholarship, call Christine Judd on 0408 239 237.

NARACOORTE.

LOCAL Make 2015 your best year yet Most of us have, at some time or another, decided that the New Year will be the time we clean up our diet, reinvigorate, or even start, an exercise regime, and with our body in check, we can reasonably expect a happier outlook on life as well. The good news this year, if you are looking to take care of yourself, author, speaker and life enthusiast Joanna Fincham has put together a four week health and wellness seminar with some of Australia’s leading experts in their fields. With topics ranging from nutrition, exercise, motivation, overcoming fears, stilling the mind and social, occupational and environmental wellness, the four week Wellness Seminar will equip you with the tools to really tackle that 2015 resolution. Jo started her wellness journey about three years ago and it was when she was looking through a calendar of events in Melbourne, she saw the Mind, Body & Spirit Festival and thought she would try and coordinate a similar style event for her hometown. “I thought it would be great to have something like that in the country,” she said. And what started as an idea to tap into some local experts, has now seen Jo snare three of the nation’s leading wellness protagonists – former Winter Olympian Steph Prem; nutritionist Lola Berry and holistic life and health coach Kate Toholka. Jo’s enthusiasm to kickstart other people’s wellness journey is infectious. “I know how good I feel now,” she said. “Feeding your body good food, surrounding yourself with good people and the power of positive thinking – it makes such a difference and that’s what I want to share.” Jo became familiar with Steph, Lola and Kate when she started following them on instagram. “It started off with loving some of the recipes I saw and went from there,” Jo said. The February 2014 event has been five months in the making and Jo wants it to be a fun, relaxed and interactive four week program, which will run on February 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 6-8pm at The Oaktree Room, at The Barn. “Local businesses have been so supportive of the Wellness Seminar as well,” Jo said. “Businesses from within the health and well being industry as well as others.” And while photography will always be the primary career for Jo, in 2015 she is undertaking study to become a qualified health and wellness coach so seeing some of these industry experts in action will certainly complement that goal.

STEPH PREM Former Winter Olympian, Presenter, Speaker, Commentator and Health and Fitness Expert Steph Prem (nee Hickey) wears many hats. Steph (below) is most recently known for her role as expert commentator and panellist for Channel 10’s coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Her depth of knowledge, athletic history, passion and love of snowsports made her a unique edition to Channel 10’s commentary team. A five-time Australian Champion, Steph was the only female to represent Australia in snowboardcross at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Prior to her Olympic debut, Steph studied Musical Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts. She also studied a Bachelor of Drama and Dance at Deakin University, and worked as a dance teacher/choreographer for five years at Cheril Rowston School of Dance. Steph is a lover of action sports, and runs her own motivational fitness and pilates business in Melbourne as well as her active lifestyle blog premium-performance.com.. “Like regular fuel and premium fuel, you can choose a regular life or a premium life. Running on premium fuel is all about investing more of the good stuff so your mind, body and soul can reap the long-term benefits.”

KATE TOHOLKA Kate Toholka is a Holistic Health & Life Coach, Occupational Therapist and the author of the number one Amazon Best Seller, ‘Healthy Habits: The Busy Women’s Guide to Boosting Productivity, Health and Happiness’. After becoming disillusioned working in the mental health industry, Kate sought to use her unbridled passions for holistic living and psychology to empower women into their dream business and lives. She is known for her raw honesty and ability to help women to tap into their unlimited potential. Kate believes in the power of community, self-love, inspired action, the natural order and your phenomenal worth. “I’m just a girl with a love of wellness and psychology who decided that mediocre, 9-5 living is not my thing. I’m endlessly fascinated with human behaviour and how our minds work. In particular, I’m infinitely curious how to transform our behaviour and harness our minds so that we can do the things we truly desire – and do them well. I desire a life full of adventure, sunshine, romance, and ‘holy shit, did I really just do that!’ moments. I want to live a meaningful life – one that gives me the most satisfaction. And I realised in my quest to this meaningful life, I had to break down some limitations and challenge the status quo. LOLA BERRY When it comes to getting the world excited about health and good food, there is very little Lola Berry won’t do. She’s convinced a TV host to swallow raw wasabi on live national television. She’s dived into dumpsters on the streets of New York (…and eaten from one!). She has also run madly in search of water after daring to munch on one of the world’s hottest chillies, and handed out actual Black Eyed Peas to celebrities at an official “Black Eyed Peas” red carpet event (…and they loved them!). Lola is very colourful, very passionate and very Australian. With a Bachelor of Health Science (majoring in Nutritional Medicine at Endeavour College of Natural Health), Lola Berry knows what she’s talking about. She has got a secret: the most nutritious, healthy food is also the tastiest! Whether through her TV appearances, radio spots or her popular web series, Lola is reaching out to people all over the globe…and people are listening. Once you see Lola Berry, you’ll remember both her and her message. She has a whole heap of fresh ideas and a talent for presenting them in a way that inspires people to actually use them to better their everyday lives.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Scam warning by Robbie Tansel Happy New Year and welcome to 2015. I will be continuing to try to entertain you each week as well as enlightening you and sometimes even improving the quality of your life. With that in mind a reader brought a recent scam to my attention that I thought I should share with you all. Here’s what you should be looking out for. A person will call your home claiming to be from a well known phone service provider. They will ask you if you’d like to participate in a survey. At the end of the survey they will then tell you that to say thank you for your participation in the survey they would like to provide you with a free iPad. For the more savvy of my readers your BS alert might be ringing quite loudly at this point. I’m sure most of you will be getting ready for how they’re going to screw you over. Having heard the full story now I can see how some people could easily be fooled though. You see they don’t ask for your bank account details. They don’t ask for personal information about your birthdate or home address. They already have this information, after all “they are your current phone provider”. All they ask is that you’re prepared to stay with your current service provider for the next two years. Three days later a brand new iPad arrives in your letterbox. Only if you have a really big letterbox I guess. Otherwise the postie probably delivers it to your door. Dastardly, isn’t it? You don’t see the scam yet? Aren’t you paying attention? All right, I haven’t given you all of the information yet. When I said they claim to be your phone service provider, that’s because they actually are. This little stunt is being conducted by a well known phone provider. They tell you you’re getting a free iPad. Of course what you’re actually getting is signed up to a two year contract. The cost of the iPad is easily factored into the pricey monthly plan

you are now locked into for the next two years. I’m sorry but that’s not a free iPad. They’re scamming us. At no point will they let you know what they’re doing either. I’ve heard people who haven’t had it explained to them what the monthly fee they will be paying for their free iPad is. You just think you’re getting a nice free iPad. I’m sure they’d like to spin that in some way but I’m sorry, if it looks like a scam, and smells like a scam then it’s a big fat stinky scam. By the way, if this has happened to you, you are welcome to call the company and tell them they’re being cheeky buggers and you’d like to give your very expensive free iPad back (and have the sneaky contract torn up) and if they don’t help you out see if the Telecommunication Ombudsman can assist. I’ve talked about this before people. Do not buy your phone or other communication devices over the phone. You can get exactly the same deals from your lovely local dealer. Buying it locally will give you the safety of knowing that if something goes wrong you can come in and look a person in the eyes as you seek help rather than talking to someone in a call centre, who knows where, after you’ve been on hold for 12 minutes. Not only that you are keeping more of the money local and helping a local keep paying their bills, hopefully spending their money at your business or employer. Mind you, be careful they’re not scamming you with the extended warranty, paint protection or upsizing which is where they’re trying to make their money off you too. Come on businesses, provide us with good products and good service and we’ll come back and spend more money without you needing to squeeze every cent out of us. Do you want to take as much money as possibly from us one time, or take a little bit at a time over the next fifty years as we become your loyal customer? If it seems too good to be true, it is! No one is going to give you a free iPad and if you believe that someone is then you’ve been living with your Mum and Dad for far too long. If you hate money hungry companies as much as I do, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Holiday on offer Two nights’ accommodation at the Quest Apartments, Docklands, Melbourne, is up for grabs for anyone who becomes a Glenelg Shire Library Member this January and February. The membership drive includes weekly prize draws of meal vouchers, book packs, show tickets and YMCA swim passes. Bat & ball share the honours in a huge week of cricket

There is an element of fatigue this week in cricket for players and fans with all three forms of the game sharing the stage in the past week. In fact reigning Barber Shield champions have made history - playing all three forms of the game in the space of six days - T20 on Tuesday, Barber Shield on Saturday and the One Day Cup final on Sunday. But despite that fact that the New Year has seen a jam packed program, the performances have shown no signs of being weary with a number of five wicket hauls and centuries across the past week providing spectators with plenty of highlights. It all started on Monday night with Dion Stratford’s 106 in East Gambier’s T20 loss to Kongorong. The skipper now has a complete set of centuries - two day cricket, one day and T20. Only two of those have come in the Mount Gambier competition - his two day century came while playing in Adelaide. East was in all sorts of trouble when Stratford (above right) strode to the crease with the score on 4/34 and when the Bulldogs then lost another wicket without adding to the total, many spectators opted to head home for dinner. But those that stayed were treated to a gem of an innings that was marred only by the fact Stratford’s team still lost. Stratford cleared the boundary six times and found it on a further eight times as he looked to single-handedly lead his team to victory but it was one of

those rare occasions where even a century was not enough. The One Day Cup final was also treated to a sparkling century by one of the competition’s most in form players across all forms of the game - Matt McInerney (below far left). The North Gambier opener made his three figures at Malseed Park in a damaging partnership with Damian Kenny (90) that had North Gambier in the box seat to defend its title. Yahl’s Robert Courtney (below left) then also made three figures on Saturday in Cox Bros action making it the second successive season the opening batsman has conjured a century. Courtney hit an astonishing 20 fours and cleared the boundary once on his way to 129. Other batsmen certainly came close with Penola’s George Kidman making 95 in Barber Shield action and, of course, Kenny backing up a great bowling performance in Saturday’s Barber Shield with a swashbuckling 90 in the One Day Cup final for North Gambier. The bowlers were not to be outdone though, with Frew Park seeing two five wicket hauls - Dave Dowdell (below left) helping limit the damage against Yahl with his 5/32, with Nick Walters then putting his side in the box seat for a likely outright victory with his 5/11 from eight overs. South Gambier’s Dave Somerfield (below right) also put the disappointment of a poor effort with the bat behind him, taking 5/26 to see the Barber Shield between South and North now evenly poised.

South East duo gain State selection again

Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara Netball Associaiton’s Maisie Mankivell and Western Border’s Mary Wilson were team mates in the 15 & under Schoolgirls South Australian netball team and will again be team mates in 2015 with the duo securing a place in the 17 & Under South Australian line-up. Both are making their first appearnace in the age group making the selction all the more meritorious. The duo is part of a strong country contingent in the 2015 team with seven players in total from regional associations part of the 12 player team. Both Maisie and Mary had a superb 2014 national championships with Mary (pictured above left) named as a reserve for the All-Australian line-up. Mary is relocating this year having secured a scholarship to attend school in Adelaide so will now be plying her trade at Oakdale Netball Club in Adelaide. Maisie (pictured above right) is a Bordertown Netball Club alumni, playing both junior and senior netball.

Seaside golf tourament nominations open Entries are now open for the 40th annual Southern Ports Golf Week, which swings into action next month. The event, which is hosted by the Kingston SE, Robe and Beachport Golf Clubs, attracts up to 400 golfers from as far afield as Newcastle and the Sunshine Coast. The eight-day program tees off on the final weekend of February, and is set to feature a range of men’s, ladies and mixed competitions for A, B and C grade players of all handicap ranges. Southern Ports Golf Week Committee secretary, Jan Chalmers, says the main event is the Men’s and Ladies 54-Hole Championship, which will be played at all three clubs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “Each grade plays on a specific course each day, and each day has various starting times, depending on the number of players in each field,” Jan said. Robe Golf Club’s Barry Snook won his first Men’s Championship in 2014, and will be back to defend his title at this year’s event. “I enjoy taking the week off work and not only meeting new people but catching up with familiar faces – because it’s such a good event, a lot of people come back year after year, so you make some really good friendships,” he said. Barry said he generally produced his best score at Beachport, and rates Robe the most challenging course. “If you don’t play the back nine well, it’s the end of your campaign – they’re unforgivable,” he said. “They’re newish holes and there’s no room for error; if you make the slightest mistake, you can finish up with a double or triple bogey, and you can do that on consecutive holes, and that’s the end of your Southern Ports campaign.” Millicent golfer, Liz Saint, has won the Ladies’ Championship an astonishing 18 times, and rates Kingston as her favourite course. “I think it’s because it’s a relatively new course, with a changed layout - so that keeps it interesting,” she said. Liz claimed her first Southern Ports title in 1988 at the age of 19. A single shot stymied her quest for five consecutive wins at last year’s event, with Adelaide’s Lyn Pascoe claiming a narrow win, and Liz said she will be aiming to get back on top for the ruby anniversary contest. “We’ll see how I go; it’s a really high standard,” she said, adding that it’s a terrific week of golf. “It’s

Botting & Barnes win 2-4-2

The Millicent Bowling Club saw its first 2-4-2 Competition for 2015 with the Wattle Range Funerals 2-4-2 competition last Thursday. The runners-up for the day were Chris Earl and Iain Campbell with a score of 33+15 and the winners were David Botting and Terry Barnes who completed the 20 ends with the final score of 35+22..

really well run, with the Ladies Championship in particular going ahead in leaps and bounds – there’s more than 70 players just for A-Grade,” she said Individual clubs will host their own feature events during the remaining days of the competition, showcasing the produce that has made the Limestone Coast’s Southern Ports so famous. “Beachport hosts a light-hearted nine-hole day on the Tuesday with a seafood lunch, and the cray-bake at Kingston is also very popular; crayfish seems to be a big drawcard for this competition,” Jan said, adding that a $1000 prize for an elusive Hole-in-One is also highly coveted. The official presentation will be held at Robe Golf Club on the Friday night (March 6), with a Mixed 4BBB Stableford at Kingston the following day capping off a solid week of competition and camaraderie. Registrations for the Southern Ports Golf Week close on January 27, 2015 and entry forms can be downloaded at southernportsgolf.com

The extremes of weather last week wreaked havoc with the Millicent Bowls Club 2015 Ladies Triples Championship with high temperatures halting play on Wednesday and then rain causing delays when the event was completed on Thursday. The final was between the Jan Buhlmann, Carlene Godden and Ella Pietersma team and Lyn Scudds, Mary Campbell and Adriana Ross. The Jan Buhlmann skippered team held the lead for the first 11 ends of the final before the Lyn Scudds skippered combination finally drew level and then went on to win by five shots, 17-12.

Jones the hero in triples championship final

The Millicent Bowling Club held the Men’s Triples Championship for 2015 earlier this month with 14 teams contesting the title. The team of Iain Campbell (skip), Rod Gibbs and John Buhlmann were looking for a fifth consecutive title in a tight final against Glen Jones (skip), Ian Ross and Neil Whelan. The final went down to the wire, with Glen Jones putting in an excellent draw bowl on the 17th end, and then repeated this on the 18th (and final) end. Jones, Ross and Whelan (pictured below) took the title on the last end winning by one shot.

Motor LOCAL In 2014, the South Eastern Automobile Club of South Australia Inc (SEAC) celebrates an important milestone, the 60th anniversary of the formation of the club. The occasion will be formally recognised with a celebration, also the club’s 2014 season presentation dinner, to be held at the Presidential Motor Inn, Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier, on Saturday, January 17. SEAC extends an invitation to all associated with the club over its 60 years to attend and re-live some of the memories and the history of the club. On June 4, 1954, 29 car enthusiasts met with the view of forming an automobile club. Those present agreed to do so and on July 2, 1954, SEAC held its first official meeting, with Syd Chapman as innaugural President and T. Rhodes Secretary. By the end of its first year of operation, SEAC membership had expanded to more than 120 persons, including Aub Shelton and Allan Scott and many other notable men and women from over the South East. During the 1990s, the club was to finally find a place to call home, with the purchase of an abanoned limestone quarry on Megaw Road, Compton. Work on SEAC Park, as it was to be called, began in earnest, and now boasts a 2km autocross track, grassed pit areas, club rooms & shelter shed, generator and equipment and machinery all now owned by the club.

Details of the forthcoming dinner are available at: www.seacsa. com • email info@ seacsa.com • Stuart Pratt 0417 089 280 Should you have any photos, memorabilia, stories or anything of interest for the occasion, please let the club know on the above contact details.

COVER Portland burnout star headed to Mount Gambier Portland’s Mick Cleary has had a whirlwind eight months and can’t wait to strut his stuff closer to home at Autofest Mount Gambier on January 23-25. Cleary and his Holden Kingswood (GMHAZD) started their meteoric rise in burnout ranks when they were invited to the Queenlsand event Burnouts Unleashed around eight months ago and he has been on the go ever since. His blown injected, small block chev, which produces 1000hp, then headed to the world’s first ever butnout teams event at Tread Cemetery, finishing fourth. Cleary then headed to the Springnats at Shepparton for a second placing and then it was off to one of the biggest events he has competed in – Summernats 28. “After entering the regular competition, I got a call asking if I would like a spot in the

masters wildcard,” Cleary said. “I was speechless but I give it a crack and out of the 20 wildcards competing I made it into the Burnout Masters top 30 cars in the country.” That left Cleary competing against many of his idols in the sport and he was set to be blown away again when he made the Masters final, which was the top 10 competitors and their cars. He finished sixth and already has his invitation to the same event at Summernats 29. “It’s still surreal,” he said. “I’ve been competing all around the place, travelling and having fun with mates and I couldn’t have done it without family, friends and sponsors .” Cleary is sponsored by Cleary Motors, Western District Tyres, Banksbrotherz, BNR Engines, Norwood Automatics and Wilful Damage.

Autofest returns to Mount Gambier Along with our event partners, the South East Street Machines, Autofest organisers invite you come and join in on the celebrations of the running of the Mount Gambier Autofest & the 37th Show N Shine on the Australia Day Weekend at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. Over the years the Autofest events have developed a circuit that have included, Murray Bridge (SA), Corowa (NSW), Melbourne (Victoria), Albury (NSW), Shepparton (Victoria) with a the most recent addition being the Bathurst Autofest at Mount Panorama Bathurst (NSW). Studies have established that Autofest events provide a multimillion dollar economic injection into the community and a conservative estimate of the Mount Gambier Autofest is in excess of $3 million. The Autofest events are about admiring the best cars in the country with family and friends in an alcohol free environment. Spectators to the event will witness some of the most powerful cars compete side by side in events such as: •Go-To-Whoa – fast paced action where timed

vehicles compete over 140 metres and must stop on a designated point; • Autokana – fast paced obstacle course action, set against the clock; • Show ‘N’ Shine – competitors show their restoration expertise and the beauty of their cars; • Burnout Competition – everyone’s favourite event with its fast and furious action, a absolute must to see! • Cruise Track- see these beauty’s cruise the showground. Show N Shine displays include motorcycles, trucks/prime movers and utes – in fact if you have any vehicle, bike, tractor etc with wheels then you welcome to participate at the Mount Gambier Autofest. “We have a long successful history with our events in other locations and the fact that there is strictly no alcohol is a major factor in that, organiser Les Adams said. “Everywhere there is an Autofest they are happy to have us and we’re very pleased

to be coming again to Mount Gambier.” Autofest is a car festival especially for modified cars, but restored and original cars, bike, utes and trucks are also welcome and catered for. A highlight of the event would be the fiercely competitive Burnout Title. The Mount Gambier Autofest Burnout will feature local Portland hero Mick Cleary among many other local and interstate hopefuls.
