Mount Gambier Marketplace supporting our local community See page 3 for details

COVER Glowing response to Men’s Shed Rudolph project The Limestone Coast’s largest retail complex – Mount Gambier Marketplace - has enlisted the help of some local ‘elves’ from the Mount Gambier Men’s Shed to make decorations for display during the festive season. Mount Gambier Marketplace Centre Manager, Andrew Tye, says the Men’s Shed has been almost as busy as Santa’s workshop bringing Rudolph and his fellow reindeer to the region. “The shed members are jacks of all trades who get together several times a week to make, mend, lend a hand and extend the virtues of typical Aussie mateship, and we knew that they would be up to the task of filling such an artistic tall order designed to add a local flavour to our celebrations” says Mr Tye. “Our theme for this year is ‘Christmas 2014 – Where it’s all about giving!’, and these locally-made decorations will most certainly add to the magic of the season.” Rudolph will be leading the pack when the reindeers land at Mount Gambier Marketplace, ahead of Santa’s first appearance on December 13. The Men’s Shed has also built a mailbox so that children can post their Christmas wish-lists direct to the North Pole. “We can’t wait to see the first child dropping their letter in there,” says member, Martin Craig. “It’s really exciting to be able to contribute something so meaningful at such a special time of the year.” The men’s shed’s 42-strong ‘workforce’ is normally accustomed to completing odd jobs and small projects like tables and chairs for kindergartens and old folks homes, and members welcomed the opportunity to create something designed to bring joy on a much larger scale. “It was certainly a unique request, but it was also a very rewarding one, and Rudolph and his fellow reindeers have turned out so well that it’s now got us all thinking about making a float for next year’s Mount Gambier Christmas Parade,” says Mr Craig. Meanwhile, a special gift will be waiting under the tree for the Men’s Shed, with Mount Gambier Marketplace giving the organisation a considerable donation for their efforts. “It’s a privilege to be able to help such a worthwhile community organisation,” says Mr Tye. “They’ve done a wonderful job, and we’re sure that shoppers will be impressed, too.”

Mount Gambier Men’s Shed president, Mike Smith, says the money will be put towards their new headquarters located on the corner of McDonnell Drive and Commercial Street West. “With so many members, now, we have actually outgrown our current shed, and are planning to move to our larger premises in the New Year,” he explains. “Given that we rely on donations to keep going, this money is going to be an enormous help when it comes to setting up our new facilities to include additional activities like metalwork and cookery.” Rudolph’s official arrival at Mount Gambier Marketplace will also mark the launch of an exciting reindeer radio and digital campaign which will create further financial spinoffs for the Men’s Shed. From November 26, Mount Gambier Marketplace will donate one dollar for every photo or ‘selfie’ taken with Rudolph when he is spotted hiding in one of 27 specialty stores. “Rudolph will be hiding with a different retailer each day, and we’re asking the first 600 shoppers who find him to post photo evidence on our Facebook page in order to help raise extra money for the Men’s Shed,” Mr Tye explains. A prize will also be offered to the retail outlet featured in the most photo uploads.

About the Men’s Shed: Men’s Sheds are a community version of the backyard shed, and they are springing up all around Australia. Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life - the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and they would like something meaningful to do with that time. Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives a man that safe and busy environment with an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. And, importantly, there is no pressure; men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for. Men’s Sheds are considered to be incredibly powerful tools in helping to remove a sense of isolation and providing the opportunity for men to be productive and valuable to their community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. - Information sourced from Australian Men’s Shed Association www.mensshed.org To find your nearest Men’s Shed log onto http://www.mensshed.org/find-a-shed/.aspx

AT THE CINEMA Horrible Bosses 2 December 11 Dale, Kurt and Nick decide to start their own business but things don’t go as planned because of a slick investor, prompting the trio to pull off a harebrained and misguided kidnapping scheme.

LOCAL Community project unveiled When Heywood Kindergarten students look at their freshly painted boat next term they will be reminded of a special time they spent with their older friends from Heywood Secondary College. Proving that a community that plays together, stays together the older pupils visited the local kindy regularly throughout term four, painting a mural on part of the kindergarten’s fence as well as making required boat upgrades (pictured). They also spent time with the children, pushing them on the swing, playing games and ‘cooking’ in the cubby. Kindergarten Teaching Director Corinna Bell said it was positive encounters like this that stayed with a child for their entire schooling lives. “It has been such a great experience not only for the children but our whole kindergarten community,” she said. “This is another example of our wonderful community spirit in Heywood.”

Above - Year 10 students Monique McRae, Emma Budde, Isabel Walton & Hanna Outtram spent their final day with the children on 1 December.

LOCAL Wrattonbully grapes make the Grange grade tasting using generic bottles, and Mr Gago has described it as a ‘significant inclusion’ in the 2014 blend. “It had definition, it had tightness, it had layers of flavour and the necessary Grange DNA to be included,” he said. “It’s very hard to get into a blend, which makes the achievement for Wrattonbully so important - it’s also an endorsement for the Masons and the way they are managing their vineyards.” Rob Mason has paid tribute to consultants Paul Georgiadis and Simon Berry, saying they have been “incredibly generous” with their expertise – “They saw the potential of the vineyard, with its beautiful red dirt over limestone, and really got us going.” He also thanked Treasury Wines Estate’s grower liaison officer, Justin McCarthy, and the Smith Vineyard’s Melbourne-based owners, Leigh and Dean Imbesi, and John Reith, who have put their faith in his viticultural management.“The vineyard was planted in 1995-1996, and we started restructuring it in 2006, changing the pruning regime and general management practises to target high A & B-Grade fruit for the Penfolds range,” he said. “While it hasn’t happened overnight, the grapes have been at their optimum for the last four or five years, and we started achieving some really good results from about 2010.” Cabernet fruit from Smith’s Vineyard has made it into Penfolds’ flagship Cabernet 707, while the Cabernet and hand-picked Shiraz have also featured in Penfolds’ multi-regional St Henri, along with the high-end Bin 389, widely known as the ‘Baby Grange’. “Penfolds has been there for some time via Treasury Wine Estate; it was the soils in the first instance – the lovely shallow terra rossa soils as red as what you get in Coonawarra over those limestone ridges - so Wrattonbully made just so much sense,” said Peter Gago. “And in the early days, it was all about potential, potential, but some very great wine is being realised. It’s not a matter of talking people into buying Wrattonbully wine – it is a serious area. I’m spreading the word about Wrattonbully on all of my presentations overseas. The proof is in the pudding.” Wrattonbully Wine

Region Association chairman James Freckleton described Smith’s Vineyard as an “amazing site”. “It’s situated on a high section of the Naracoorte range in Wrattonbully, which also includes a number of other producers,” he said. “The block is very uniform with shallow terra rossa soil over limestone, which, coupled with aspect, makes it an ideal site for producing premium fruit.” Mr Freckleton said Wrattonbully was entering an exciting phase as a region, with most vineyards

nearing twenty years of age. “As the vines get older and they start to balance and self-regulate, they have settled into a bit of consistency, with vineyard managers learning how to best manage the complexities of their sites,” he said. “As a result, the vineyards really are starting to hit their straps.” “I think it’s a matter of watch this space,” Peter Gago said. “It’s no longer the new kid on the block, it’s in a good part of the world.”

The Wrattonbully wine region is celebrating the news that grapes grown from local vines have been selected for the 2014 vintage of Australia’s most iconic wine, Penfolds Grange. It’s the first time that premium fruit from a private Wrattonbully vineyard has been used in the wordfamous wine, with grower, Rob Mason, describing the Grange contract as a career highlight. “This is a truly amazing wine – it’s a South Australian icon, which features on the State Heritage List, but it is also famous at a global level, so we are absolutely honoured to have made the grade,” he sayid. Mr Mason, who is co-director of Mason Vineyard Management alongside wife Robbie, attended last week’s ‘Grange Growers Club Lunch’ held at Penfolds’ showcase restaurant, Magill Estate. The lunch recognises the significant contribution of the growers who supply the premium fruit used in the iconic wine, with guests receiving a limited edition magnum of Grange. Penfolds chief winemaker, Peter Gago, refers to the Barossa Valley as the ‘engine room’ of Grange, closely followed by McLaren Vale, with the bulk of the fruit hailing from these regions. But he said it’s important to look to other growing areas for the complexity and characters that make Grange such a global standout. “This is a South Australian story; we have cooler areas, we have warmer areas, we have maritime and continental influences,” he said. “We purely go by what’s in the glass - it doesn’t matter if we work with the grower or their father or grandparents; if it’s not good enough, it doesn’t go in.” Mr Gago said he saw potential in the parcel of Wrattonbully fruit at ‘Smith’s Vineyard’ during several visits to the region throughout the growing season. “Each year, we will spend two or three days down in the Limestone Coast during ripening and harvest, working with our grower liaison officers who organise the meetings with the vineyard managers and growers,” Mr Gago said. “It’s a bit of a road trip for us; it gets us out of the daily grind, and we will cover off Robe, Coonawarra, Padthaway, and of course Wrattonbully.”The Wrattonbully fruit made the cut after it was selected blind during a classification

When James Woodford was confronted by half a dozen sharks swimming at full speed, he froze in shock. But he was even more surprised when they swam right past, completely ignoring him. He couldn’t reconcile this experience with the mindless eatingmachines that dominate the discussion of sharks in Australia. Interviewing world-renowned experts and joining research teams at Neptune Islands, one of the most famous shark aggregation locations in the world - and consequently one of the most dangerous dive sites - James investigates these intriguing creatures at close range and discovers their fascinating world.

LOCAL The fest countdown begins

LOCAL Training underway for local athletes

We have officially welcomed summer which means the 2015 Cape Jaffa Seafood and Wine Festival is just around the corner. Sunday, January 11, will once again be a fabulous day for family, friends and plenty of frivolity. Come spend the day by the seaside enjoying live music with delicious Limestone Coast food and wine. The 2015 Festival will bring together a great selection of seafood thanks to the many local providers and community groups. On offer will be Southern Rock Lobster, prawns and prawn dip, good oldfashioned fish n chippies, Sails at Robe’s famous salt and pepper squid and lobster pies and more. There also plenty for the non seafood lovers including pork sliders, tasty chicken skewers and steak sandwiches. The Mount Benson and Robe wineries will be showcasing their wares and will be only too pleased

The arrival of summer has sent individual fitness programs into full swing, with jogging becoming the next big thing as regular sports wind down for Christmas. Following on from the incredible success of last month’s Blue Lake Fun Run, organisers of the Joggers World 2015 Kingston SE Triathlon are encouraging Limestone Coast athletes to keep up the momentum and get on board their February 15 event. The runner-up in the 10.4kilometre Blue Lake Fun Run, Travis Hickman, is among those planning to enter the triathlon’s International Cycles Olympic Course, which serves as Race 8 in the Triathlon SA State Series, and features a 1500-metre swim leg, a 40-kilometre cycle and a 10-kilometre

to recommend a wine to match your lunch. Two wine masterclasses will run during the day and offer a fun way to socialise with your friends and get up close and personal with the winemakers themselves. You can ask lots of questions and learn about the perfect food & wine matching. After savouring all those amazing wines you’ll also be able to take your favourites home with the festivals take home license permitting sealed wine to be taken off the premises. This event wouldn’t be a festival without music and this year the Bill Parton Trio will headline entertainment for that perfect beachside chilled vibe. They will perform a selection of original tracks as well as covers to suit all tastes and ages. We also have some new activities for young and old including Guess the Mystery Wine and Toss the Cray Float (certainly not as easy as you think). The Great Lobster Weigh-In invites fest-goers to guess the correct weight of Larry the Lobster with the closest guess taking him home for dinner. The sandcastle building competition is a popular event for the youngsters as well as face painting. This large community/tourism event relies on the support and sponsorship of local businesses and community groups. The 2015 festival has been very well supported with special thanks to our major Diamond Sponsors GJ Gardner Homes and the Cape Jaffa Anchorage. Remember to mark the date on your calendar, spread the word and rally your friends from far and wide. This is always a fabulous day out for the whole family. run. The 40-year-old has been a regular entrant since moving from Adelaide to Mount Gambier four years ago to become the station officer at the Metropolitan Fire Service. “I also entered prior to that, as a member of the West Lakes Triathlon Club – the best thing about Kingston is that it’s a local community-run event; the whole town gets behind it and gets out there and supports it and looks after us really well,” he said. “It’s also one of those weekends where you can go away and do some physical activity and all compete as a family, which is what we love about it.” Travis’ eldest daughter, Ruby, 13, has been training for the triathlon’s Jaffa Limestone Short Course (500m swim, 13.3km cycle, 3.6km run), while younger children Neli, 11, and Tully, 8, are preparing to participate in the Harrington Event for 7-11 year olds (50m swim, 3km cycle, 500m run). “Now that the kids are getting older, it gives us more of a chance to be able to train together, going out for rides or heading to the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre, which is a facility that we all really love,” Travis said. The Lucindale Triathlon Club is also well and truly in training mode. Formed four years ago by local marathon runner, Brett Snodgrass, many of the club’s 60 members have been pedalling up to 180 kilometres during a regular Sunday training loop along the country roads. A club sub-group calling themselves ‘Lucindale Lycra’ will take part in the Bupa Challenge being held on January 23rd in conjunction with the Adelaide Tour Down Under, and will ride up to 151.7km. “It’s going to be excellent preparation for Kingston,” Brett said Brett and his wife, Nicky, will also take part in a team event in Geelong the weekend before the Kingston SE Triathlon, with Brett relishing the busy schedule – last month, he clocked a personal best time of 4 hours and 38 minutes in Barmera’s Murray Man Triathlon, and backed it up with a solid performance in another half ironman event, Challenge Shepparton, the following week. “I would encourage everyone to just get out there and do some kilometres on the bike if you can’t get near the sea, and to try to practice running longer distances than you are planning to do during the race – it hurts, but it’s a hurt that you learn to enjoy and you certainly feel rewarded at the end of it,” he said. An accredited triathlon coach, Brett will be holding free coaching sessions leading up to the Kingston SE Triathlon for interested athletes. The sessions will be held in the New Year on the Kingston foreshore at Thredgolds Beach, opposite the caravan park, and more information is available by calling Brett on 0429 967 007. Online registrations for the 27th annual event are open until February 12. The various courses in the Joggers World 2015 Kingston SE Triathlons include: International Cycles Olympic Course (1500metre swim leg, 40km cycle, 10km run), Jaffa Limestone Short Course (500m S, 13.3km C, 3.6km R), Kevin Wright Plumbing Come ‘n’ Tri Course (200m S, 7.3km C, 2.4km R), Harrington Event for 7-11 year olds (50m S, 3km C, 500m R) Lighthouse Fun Run/Walk (4km)

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Some random observations by Robbie Tansel It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me. The honest truth is I hate this time of the year. I dislike being busy and it’s hard not to be busy at this time of the year. With that in mind my brain seems to be in a hypercritical mood and looking for things to

be negative about. Let me share.I’ve added a new job to my list of terrible jobs. The list currently includes highway toll booth worker, car park attendant, and Tony Abbott public relations adviser among others. The job I would like to add to the list is circus Occupational Health and Safety coordinator. Can you just imagine what that job involves? Every day someone in the crew is going to be coming up to you and telling you all about the new extremely dangerous trick they’ve come up with. “So what I’m going to do is throw knives at a woman in a skimpy leotard. Then I’m going to light the knives on fire. Then I’m going to get blind-folded before I throw the knives.” Can you imagine the paperwork you’d be filling out? Quite obviously there is a reason there are none of those,“No workplace accidents in

124 days” signs when you go to the circus. Another thing I have noticed this week is how all of the mayoral candidates seem to have disappeared off the face of the planet. Remember that several weeks where you couldn’t go to the skate park, visit a shopping centre, answer your door, or read the letters to the editor without seeing how much they cared about their community? Don’t they care about their community anymore? They’re like that friend everyone has who only rocks up when they want to borrow something. You see them when they want something but the rest of the time they don’t know you. As you know I participated in the Blue Lake Fun Run last week and it has reminded me of how slack we are getting with the way we use the English language. Fun seems to be a word we are playing fast and loose with at the moment. There is no such thing as a “fun” run. Trust me. Likewise, there is nothing fun about “fun sized” chocolate bars. The bigger a chocolate bar is, the more fun it is. Cadbury want us to believe the opposite. I’m pretty sure that when I got close to people while doing the “Fun” Run last week they must have been thinking Darth Vader was chasing them. f there was a prize for heaviest breather at the fun run I’m sure I would have won easily. For those that are interested, I managed to jog the entire 6.8 kilometre fun run and didn’t need to walk at all. I improved my time from last year by about five minutes which was also nice although I didn’t quite reach my aim of finishing in about forty minutes. Another thing that has had me quite worked up recently has occurred while sharing wedges with sour cream and sweet chili with mates. There have been some quite intense and heated discussions about what is the correct order for dipping the wedges. Everyone understands that double dipping is a strict no no. But is it more objectionable when the wedge is dipped in the sour cream first and then when it gets dipped in the sweet chili there are little traces of sour cream left behind? Or is it more of an issue to have the sweet chili contaminating the sour cream? Big issues, I know. I’d love to gather statistics on this one so feel free to email me at robbietansel@gmail.com telling me what order you dip in so I can get a consensus and then we can sort this issue out. I think if I find out that the order I dip the wedges in is correct, it will improve my outlook in general and I might be able to get through the Christmas season without a murder so please send me an email or even a message on Facebook or Twitter. wI think we could all do with some certainty on that issue in our lives.

LOCAL ForestrySA raises $8000 for Movember

LOCAL Local author & foodie shares latest adventure

The ForestrySA Hairy Loggers have now come to the end of a very successful Movember campaign, raising $8,000 in support of men’s health. The aptly named team, comprised of ForestrySA Commercial staff members, all forwent the razor for the month of November in support of the annual event, which aims to raise money and awareness of men’s cancer and mental health. And while the moustaches may now (thankfully!) be gone, the conversations they inspired and funds they generated throughout November, will be of benefit for a long time yet. The Hairy Loggers had hoped

The Mount Gambier Library invites the public to join their guest speaker, Dee Nolan, author of A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to France, this Wednesday at 7pm at City Hall, as she shares her culinary and cultural adventures from her journey retracing the footsteps of the early French pilgrims who travelled to Santiago de Compostela. Traveller and food lover Dee Nolan (pictured) shares her long time fascination with the medieval pilgrim paths of Europe, this time exploring the ancient routes through France. The greatest pilgrimage of the Middle Ages was to Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. Most of the early pilgrims were French, and now, a thousand years later, modern day travellers can once more follow the many “camino” paths they took through France. From her farm here in the Limestone Coast, Dee planned her definitive camino, one that would immerse her in the food cultures of regional France, one on which she could meet producers and learn first hand about the rich history of the places she would visit. Dee’s French pilgrimage wound through magnificent and changing landscapes; from Burgundy’s vine-covered slopes to the gastronomic capital of Lyon; up onto the vast windswept meadows of the Aubrac plateau; along the dramatic Lot river; through the gentle hills of Gascony; to the trout-filled rivers of the Pyrenees and, finally to Santiago de Compostela itself. She met the monks whose medieval predecessors planted the vineyards we still see today, visited local markets with some of France’s greatest chefs, cooked traditional recipes in home kitchens and walked with farmers taking cattle to the high pasture. Beautifully photographed

to raise $5000, however, by month’s end the tally had climbed to $8000, earning the team a national ranking of 205. Assisting in the group’s fundraising endeavours was ForestrySA’s agreement to partner the team by matching every dollar pledged. Team captain Jim O’Hehir - dubbed Jim “Mo’hehir” by his teammates during the campaign - said the result had exceeded all expectations. “The result has been outstanding, but we could never have achieved it without the assistance of our customers, contractors, colleagues, friends and family,” Jim said. “Movember began quite simply as a team building opportunity and a way to raise funds and awareness of men’s health issues. “We thank everyone for their backing – it’s fantastic.”

by Earl Carter, this sumptuous book includes recipes, detailed maps, advice on planning a French pilgrimage and recommended books and addresses. Dee was born in the Limestone Coast region, growing up at Gum Park, a farm established by her grandfather. She dreamed of being a writer and a farmer and now, after an international career in journalism, she has returned to Gum Park where she writes books and, together with her husband, runs an organic farm producing Nolans Road extra virgin olive oil and breeding Southdown sheep. Dee trained as a newspaper reporter on The Herald in Melbourne and went on to have a distinguished career as a magazine editor and senior newspaper executive with some of the word’s leading titles in London and New York. She was three times awarded Editor Of The Year by the British Society of Magazine Editors. Her first book, A Food Lover’s Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela was recognised in the 2010 Gourmand Wold Cookbook Awards as one of the best culinary travel books in the world. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about a very special part of the world with Dee showing selected photos and a short film clip of her experience. This is a free community event with registration required for seating purposes. Please telephone the Mount Gambier Library to reserve your seat (08)8721 2540.

LOCAL National honour for Coonawarra winemaker Coonawarra winemaker, Sue Bell (Bellwether Wines) has received one of the industry’s top honours, with the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology naming her Winemaker of the Year at a gala Awards for Excellence dinner in Adelaide. The

BUTCHER

ASVO Winemaker of the Year Award aims to recognise a winemaker who demonstrates technical mastery over various aspects of winemaking. ASVO newly-appointed president, Dr Mardi Longbottom, says the accolade acknowledges Sue’s enthusiasm, community involvement, leadership and passionate advocacy of women in wine. “It also acknowledges Sue’s commitment to honouring the classics in cool climate Australia and trialing new grape varieties that are suited to dry regions, such as Nero d’Avola and Vermentino,” said Dr Longbottom. “These have been well received, winning awards and establishing a model for new thinking as the industry prepares for the impact of climate change.” Judge Wendy Cameron described Sue’s role in the industry as inspirational. “She has shown how much can be achieved with passion and

commitment even without much financial backup,” she said. “I think the mix of industry and community is really needed.” Fellow judge, Paul Henscke, said Sue’s popularity lies in a particular combination of important qualities and strong leadership skills, which are viewed with credibility. “Bell’s contribution is likely to benefit a significant group of industry people in strong need of new direction,” he said. Sue was senior winemaker at Stonehaven, Padthaway, before making the bold leap to establishing her own label, Bellwether Wines, in 2009. She now produces award-winning wines at the historic Glen Roy Woolshed for herself and other growers. “It’s very basic style winemaking; I’m essentially working out of a shed compared to what I’ve had in the past, relying on my palate and very small, high quality parcels of fruit,” she explains. “Going out on your own is tough – you can’t do it without the generosity and support of your community, which Coonawarra has in spades. I would particularly like to acknowledge the Redmans, Pete Weinberg, Bill Brand and the staff at Brands, along with my mum and business partner who have shown extraordinary faith in me.” Prominent Riverland grape grower Ashley Radcliff, from Ricca Terra farms, is among Sue’s valued suppliers, and nominated Sue for the award. “I’m very grateful to him – and very fortunate to work with some amazing people who grow great fruit in the Riverland, Coonawarra, Tasmania, Wrattonbully, and Heathcote,” Sue said. Coonawarra viticulturist Ben Harris, who works for Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate, finished runner up to Pyrenees viticulturist Matthew Bailey in the ASVO Viticulturist of the Year Award. ASVO was established in 1980 to encourage exchange of technical information in the wine industry. It runs seminars, co-hosts the triennial Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference with the AWRI, and publishes the world’s highest ranked, peer-reviewed viticulture and wine scientific journal, the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research.

LOCAL Community rallies to take care of its own A free male suicide prevention and mental health awareness evening is to be held in Penola this Thursday at the Penola Sports Club with the aim of establishing a Menswatch program locally. Menswatch uses the unique setting of an all-male group to engage men in learning new knowledge and skills, and gaining confidence in supporting other men with personal issues and crises, relationship difficulties, mental health problems, and separation and grief. Menswatch acknowledges how men tend to exhibit different psychology – ways of coping, processing emotions, communicating, and responding to stressful events, compared to women. The program is conducted through all-male groups because experience has shown that they are an ideal setting for male learning, and for psychologically and culturally ‘safe’ self-disclosure and interpersonal sharing of experience. The program is based on many years of experience and success in working effectively with men from a wide range of backgrounds. It has proven particularly effective in rural and remote communities and with men that often have little familiarity with human service concepts or with human psychology and concepts of mental health. More than 1500 South Australian men have completed the program, which was the recipient of the 2009 Dr Margaret Tobin Award for Excellence in Community Mental Health Education. Establishing a group in

Penola has been community driven, sadly prompted by a recent suicide, and has the backing of the man’s wife and Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi, who has been alerted to a high suicide rate in his council area. LOCAL Stepping back in time in Heywood

When Jeanette Saunders, Gwen Finck and Anne McLean walked back through the doors of Heywood Kindergarten last week, they felt like they had turned back the clock 40 years. Each of them worked at the kinder during the 1970s early 80s, with Mrs McLean teaching for 19 years, including when the new kinder building opened. Heywood Kindergarten Teaching Director Corinna Bell said it was a privilege for children and current staff to be able to share their own experiences with the special guests. “It was so lovely

to see the women with the children, some of whom they knew,” Ms Bell said. “We made morning tea for them and they had a good look around, spending time inside and outside with children and staff … they couldn’t believe all the changes that had been made. “It was great to finally meet them, especially Mrs McLean, as there is a room here at the kinder dedicated to her. “This was a very special time for us all, and I would like to thank Jeanette Saunders for organising it.”

LOCAL New President of the Portland District Health Board of Management, Dr Michelle Kearney, says having the right professional health workforce in place is the key to future success. Dr Kearney replaces Mike Noske in the role and says she has big shoes to fill. Mr Noske plans to retire from the Board of Management next June and will mentor Dr Kearney over the coming six months. “Mike has been a positive mentor for the rest of the board and has worked intelligently around succession planning to make certain we each have a detailed picture of a significant part of the hospital,” she said. “That’s why we work well together.” The Bayview College Principal joined the PDH Board in July last year and became chair of the risk and audit committee within two months and junior deputy chair earlier this year. “It has been a huge learning curve but also incredibly fulfilling,” she said. Dr Kearney said attracting and sustaining a professional workforce was the key to the health service’s success. “The ongoing challenge for PDH, like many rural health services, is attracting and sustaining a quality workforce. Once we get that right we can provide the service delivery we want to achieve and then address the financial difficulties that come with not having a stable workforce,” she said. “It’s pivotal to have the right workforce to be able to give the quality of care required by our community, and then we’ll be able to deliver a good financial outcome as well.” Dr Kearney said PDH was making good ground in recruiting the right staff to provide services for the community. “Since CEO Chris Giles has been appointed she’s done an amazing job and achieved a great deal in that area,” she said. “The executive has done a great job in trying to understand the health needs of our community and developing a workforce for that.” Dr Kearney said the community had identified improved maternity provision as a high priority. “This year we have achieved a lot more in that area,” she added. Other priorities include continuing the chemotherapy service, the promotion of healthier lifestyles in the SEA Change initiative, ensuring the service has the best model for aged care, and better managing theatre time and the use of surgeons.

Adelaide club wins inaugural 9s Rugby League Cup Central Districts Rooster’s won Mount Gambier Rugby League’s South Aussie Hotel 9’s Cup and Naracoorte Jets won the MGRL Shield on Saturday afternoon at McDonald Park, Mount Gambier. Seven local, intrastate and interstate teams competed in the all-day 9 a-side knock-out carnival that included free family entertainment. In cold and windy conditions, each team played each other once over seven rounds of hardhitting rugby league action that tested team’s physical fitness and playing ability with many non-rugby league players competing. In the opening round, a MGRL 2014 Grand Final rematch between Naracoorte Jets and South Eastern Dragons saw Dragons defeat the Premiers 16-12 in a very close match. After four rounds, Victoria’s Warrnambool Plovers were undefeated with four wins, Roosters were on three wins, Blue Lake Knights were on two wins, Gambier Warriors, Dragons, and Jets were on one win apiece, and Victoria’s Horsham were yet to win a game. The last three rounds saw a variety of close and competitive games and some run-away games with teams fitness levels tested and some losing players to injuries. The conclusion of the seven rounds, which equalled 21 20-minute games, saw Knights verse Jets for the MGRL Shield and Roosters verse Plovers for the South Aussie Hotel Cup. The MGRL Shield Grand Final saw a scoreless first half with both teams defence holding strong. After halftime, Jets persevered their try-line with Hoani Simmonds (9) pushing through Knights defensive line to score. Knights quickly retaliated and scored minutes later. With three minutes remaining, scores were level at 6-all

as both teams continued attacking. A late push by Jets saw Tony McCarthy (12) score in the corner and seal the 12-6 win. Player of the Match was Knights Nathan Roach who set-up multiple scoring opportunities in the narrow loss. In the South Aussie Hotel Cup Grand Final, Roosters continued their undefeated streak in a display of physical fitness. Roosters used their athletic ability to score three tries to Plovers nil before halftime. Plovers were close to scoring on a number of occasions with quick ball but Roosters defence held strong. Roosters ran away with the game and won 40-0. Player of the Match was Rooster Alex Walding who scored two tries. Other awards included the West End Player of the Cup Series that was awarded to Plovers Charlie and the Church and Palmer Wines Player of the Shield Series that was awarded to Jets Kyme Lewis. MGRL president Daniel Hansen was extremely happy with the carnival and the spirit the games were played in. “There was great sportsmanship shown by all teams and some great rugby league action on display,” Mr Hansen said. “We are looking forward to our upcoming Summer 9’s Competition that kicks off early January 2015, and then hosting another carnival later in the year.” For more information on MGRL, email mountgambierrl@gmail.com or Find Them on Facebook: mtgambierrl.

LOCAL Dartmoor families will continue to benefit from access to 15 hours of kindergarten at their local centre. The proposal was adopted at the November Meeting of Council. Funding and enrolment uncertainty meant that Dartmoor Children’s Centre services were uncertain past 2014. However, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) has now confirmed a continuation of the small rural funding grant beyond 2014. The enrolment numbers for the kindergarten also remains consistent, with four children currently enrolled. Occasional care is also offered to families in Dartmoor to help boost numbers and this caters for six children. In 2008, the Council of Australian Government’s (COAG) National Partnership Agreement on Early Childhood Education was signed, with the aim that by 2013 every child would have access to 15 hours of kindergarten in the year prior to school. However Dartmoor Children’s Centre was unable to provide 15 hours of kindergarten in 2013 due to workforce restraints. In January 2014, Council implemented the increase in hours following advice and funding from the State Government. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Robert Halliday said Council wanted to ensure the Shire’s smaller towns were able to continue to receive vital services. “It is evident that a quality early childhood education has a positive influence on longer-term educational and social outcomes, particularly for children experiencing educational and social disadvantage,” he said. “Participation in a kindergarten program gives parents and families the chance to be part of a community focused on children’s wellbeing.”

There was no specific agenda, but most certainly a purpose to spread the word throughout Australia and our near neighbours. Following that first year, the passion spread throughout Oceania and we welcomed a ladies New Zealand team to the tournament. In 2012, we introduced a ladies tournament to the program to run alongside the men’s. In 2013, we evolved the program further with the introduction of an ‘Under 12’s Tournament’ with the overall aim of developing players through the National Coaching Curriculum. In 2014 we enter the fourth year of the Ultimate Fiji Cup; with New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Fiji battling for champion status. The South East Womens Football Association is proud to announce that 7 players have been selected from the Limestone Coast to take part in the “Ultimate Fiji Cup”. Those selected are, in the Under 17 division; Laura Mirtchin from County, and Angela Bennett, Courtney van Diesen and Ebony Butcher from Portland. In the Under 15 division; Bella Calderwood from Wanderers, Ella Firth from Palace, and Georgie Peate from Inter. This year’s “Ultimate Fiji Cup” takes place in Nadi, Fiji, and NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia will join the Fiji National Training Squads in a memorable tournament from December 6-14
