Melbourne’s Thomas Hynes (pictured left) made history in 2012 when he became the youngest winner of the Blue Lake Fun Run 10.4km premier event and he backed up that performance in style last year by becoming the first person to win the event twice. The teenager also set a new race record, breaking his own mark, and given the 2013 event was in tough conditions and Hynes ran the course in35:01, the smart money would be on him breaking the 35 minute mark if he chooses to return in 2014. The women’s event also saw the records tumble as Warrnambool’s Ella Gill ran a 38:51 to eclipse the mark set by Lucindale’s Nikki Smart in 2012, with Smart having to settle for second, despite improving on her own record by more than 20 seconds. The men’s event was also a case of history repeating, with David Staehr having to settle for runner-up for the second consecutive year to the teenage sensation. Inaugural winner Danny Habets, who is now an ultra marathon competitor, still managed a top 10 finish, with 2011 winner Daniel Castle

(pictured top right) also back in the mix in 2013 with 13th place. Once again the event, which attracted just over 1000 participants, saw a bevy of school, community and sporting groups as well as a huge contingent of families, some boasting three generations, taking on the challenge. It also continued its region wide appeal, as well as a good representation from Adelaide and Melbourne. And nominations are now open for the 2014 event, the third time the event will be run by the Lakes Rotary Club. The 2014 SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run looks again set to attract in excess of 1000 nominations with the seasoned competitors as well as those just doing it for fun and will be run, or walked, on Sunday, November 30. The diversity of entries has ensured the wide spread appeal of the event, which offers three courses, 10.4; 6.8 and 3.2km circuits. In 2014, all registered runners will receive a running singlet as part of their entry, with entries after November 17 attracting a late fee and all nominations closing on November 24.

Children attending Family Day Care at the home of educator Dianne Evans had a special treat last week when they were paid a visit by volunteers from the CFA. Dianne, one of the newest educators to join the Southern Grampians Shire Council Family Day Care service, organised the event to tie in with Children’s week which is celebrated from Saturday 18 to Friday 24 October. Susan Showler and Mal Anderson from the Hamilton CFA Brigade spent time showing the children through their fire truck and also talking with them about fire safety. The children learned to ‘drop and crawl’ and had fun practising their newly learned techniques. Southern Grampians Shire Council acting children’s service coordinator Kim Ayling said events like this demonstrate the positive benefits of Family Day Care. “This visit shows families in the community that Family Day Care is providing the same educational opportunities that children would receive in a Long Day Care Centre, but in smaller groups and in a home-like environment,” Kim said. Family Day Care uses identical frameworks and national quality standards and regulations as all other Early Childhood Education and Care Services. Southern Grampians Shire Council are always looking for new people to join their team of educators.

Anyone interested in starting a Family Day Care business must be fully qualified or enrolled in either Certificate 3 or Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care. There are also current vacancies available across a number of Family Day Care providers in the Shire. “We currently have places available for children 0-12 years. Places are filling up fast so please contact us to get your name onto the waiting list as soon as possible,” Kim said. LOCAL Community members using mobility scooter and motorised wheelchairs can now power up for free with the introduction of a new service in the Southern Grampians Shire. Mayor Cr Albert Calvano launched the ‘Plug In and Power Up’ program at the recent Seniors Festival. Nine organisations and businesses in Hamilton have registered with the program to provide a place for community members to recharge their batteries at no cost. The Plug In and Power Up Program will help community members who use mobility scooters or motorised wheelchairs travel around the Shire without fear of being stranded by a flat battery. Mayor Calvano said improving safety, social connection and well-being for shire residents was very important and with the help of the program, residents would be able to plan daily activities accordingly.“Most of us take our ability to move around freely for granted and don’t really understand just what a challenge losing this ability presents”, Mayor Calvano said. “People will now be able to go out with confidence knowing that support to recharge is available should they need it. “Council is committed to improving liveability in the Greater Hamilton region and programs like this demonstrate our commitment towards this goal.” The following places have power points available for people to charge their mobility devices for free: Hamilton Library; Hamilton Performing Arts Centre; All About Getting About; Frances Hewett Community Centre; Hamilton Community House; Hamilton Indoor Leisure and Aquatic Centre (HILAC); Visitor Information Centre; Hamilton District Skills Centre and Western District Health Service – Hamilton House Allied Health Centre. LOCAL Muscle cars join the Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb party This year will be the ninth running of the Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb and the evolution of the event continues with the introduction of yet another new element to the 2014 program. The classic cars, which run on Friday from 10.30am, will be joined by around 40 muscle cars as the historic element of the program continues to grow. The classic car section was added four years ago and while this year will be the first time the muscle cars have been a part of the Mount Gambier event, their inclusion is set to be a biennial feature. The muscle cars are part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual Aussie Muscle Car Run and in a case of serendipity, the 2014 run saw the cars in Warrnambool on November 6, making Mount Gambier the perfect Friday stopover with a chance to participate in

one of the nation’s most popular hill climbs an added bonus for the fundraising event. Not surprisingly, the connection with the Aussie Muscle Car Run was made by the brains behind Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb, the late Lionel Stingers. “Lionel jumped at the opportunity, he saw it as another great way to get more cars interested in the hill climb, particularly the historic category,” committee member Bob Byham said. It means Friday’s classic hill climb event will see around 70 of the usual classic cars in action as well as a block of 40 muscle cars from the Aussie Muscle Car Run. “We will run the muscle cars as a block of 40,” Bob said. “They fit perfectly into the Friday program because they basically are all classic cars as well.” It means the 2014 event is basically

at capacity with more than 100 cars in the classic event on Friday and the maximum field or 150 almost reached for the main event on Saturday and Sunday. Mount Gambier locals Mick Mullan and Tom Stokker are part of the 2014 Aussie Muscle Car Run, heading off from Mount Gambier on Thursday for the Adelaide to Bathurst round trip. The duo is in their second Muscle Car Run together with Mick heading off for his third tilt at the event. Mick entered the 2012 event with his brother Brad, who was battling leukaemia. “The event was such a perfect fit for us because muscle cars are what we love,” Mick said. Brad was hoping to be part of last year’s event as well but he lost his battle with the disease and Tom has become the new member of the team. Mick had always intended to continue to be part of the Aussie Muscle Car Run to honour his brother’s memory and with the event’s fundraising trophy named in honour of Brad, he will always be there to present that award. Mick and Tom are sitting entrenched in the top 10 of the fundraising for the 2014, eclipsing their target of $2500 easily. Before last Friday’s golf day, they had topped $11,000 and once the proceeds from what is their biggest fundraiser have been added, the boys will have achieved a phenomenal tally. “You always want to raise more though,” Mick said. “It’s such an important cause.” Anyone wanting to donate to Mick and Tom, who race under the team name the Entrepreneurial Bogans, can

donate directly to either of the boys, or through the Aussie Muscle Car Run website, that has an easy link to the Mount Gambier entry. The Aussie Muscle Car Run raises funds for the patient village in Adelaide which is specifically for regional and rural based patients. “It is great that the Muscle Car Run is coming through Mount Gambier and from our point of view that gives all our generous sponsors great exposure,” Mick said. As for Bob Byham, who helps run the classic car event, it means he will step out of his car and not compete so he can ensure Friday’s increased entries all get a smooth run and opportunities to tackle the Valley Lake hill – he will still tackle the main competition at the weekend, though. The Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb field is shaping up as the same quality field it has been since its inception with local hope Peter Gazzard and long time rival and three time winner Kevin Mackrell expected to again head the field, with Kevin Weeks also a certain starter and orthopaedic surgeon Greg Keene getting his hands on a GT3 Porsche for the weekend. There will be around 30 locals contesting the 2014 event. Racing on Saturday and Sunday starts around 10am.

Businesses such as physiotherapy, counselling and women’s health and supporting groups will be part of the expo displays. Complementary and western therapies including Reiki, meditation and brain gym will also be represented, while Christianity and other spiritual modalities will be some of the many interactive stalls or displays available. There will be a door prize, raffle and lots of colour and vibrancy. Time is allocated for various workshops, which include relaxation meditation, laughter yoga, secret writing and indigenous touch. Some workshops include a nominal fee to attend. Guest speakers Di Thornton and Barb Ireland will share their incredible stories and insight. Local country singer/song writer Leah Briggs will be performing. Catering is on site with light healthy food choices, a barista and fresh juices available.

Hey, Blake, when it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I continue to be hugely frustrated with reality television, the most ridiculously fictitious programs you’ll watch on the television. One of the things I object to most with reality television is that they want me to show interest in other human beings. Even worse, the people they want me to care about are stupid. Let’s be clear that I’m not talking about lack of book smarts. I’m sure they are successful, intelligent people. But boy they do some dumb things. And I’m not stupid enough to think that what we see is even the reality for these people normally. I understand that the show’s producers deliberately put the contestants in situations hoping to get a reaction and happenings that will be entertaining when they put them on TV. I would still suggest and argue that these are some stupid people though, and I don’t care about them, who they decide to marry, what they cook, what is happening in their big house, or what they’ve decided to do with the bathroom. At least when I’m watching fictional characters in my favourite television shows and they annoy me, I know it’s because someone wrote lines and told them to act annoying. In reality television if they act annoying, it’s because they’re annoying. AndOPEN FRO when their stupid fifteen minutes of fame reality (parking at television show finishes, they’re back on the loose with you and me. They could be the person serving you at the shops. They could be the teacher teaching your children. They could be the nurse giving you injections. Actually…maybe getting more of these people out of our communities and a safe distance away on our televisions is not such a bad thing. Dear Ratepayer Re: Fire Prevention Limestone Coast last week in order to experience as many Limestone Coast wine districts as possible in the lead-up to the event, with the Mount Gambier GI among those regions relishing the opportunity to play host. “As an emerging region we realise that it is imperative to utilise every opportunity to spread the word about Mount Gambier and its capacity to produce quality fruit and wines,” said Mount Gambier Regional Winegrower’s Association president Terry Strickland. “We are looking forward to showing Fongyee the region and providing a context for its cool climate wines.” Mount Gambier wines will be among a line-up of exceptional quality entries vying for trophies, with the Wine Show Committee saying that Cabernet and Shiraz varieties are again expected to dominate. “The 2012 reds in particular are really starting to hit their straps, while the Reserve and Museum reds have also had strong support this year – it’s a real showcase class that certainly reflects the cellaring potential of wines from this area, and it’s always a highlight for the judges because there are so many beautiful gems,” the committee’s Sarah Pidgeon said. The panel’s favourite wines will be revealed at a Trophy Presentation Feast at the historic Katnook Woolshed on October 30. The dinner menu will be matched with previous wine show trophy winners, and while tickets have now sold out, a waiting list is available.

With the Fire Danger Season fast approaching, it is the responsibility of all landowners within the Council area to commence fire prevention measures so as to prevent the outbreak of fire or the spreading of fire, to or from their property. Fuel reduction is one of the most important preparations you can undertake. The following are the minimum recommendations for fire hazard reduction: • For allotments 0.50 ha or less - reducing flammable undergrowth to a maximum height of 10cm by slashing or mowing. • For allotments greater than 0.50 ha - by mowing, slashing or grazing to a maximum height of 10cm all undergrowth in a strip 5m wide as near as practicable to the perimeter of the allotment, and all undergrowth within 20 metres of a dwelling or shed/s etc. • Removal of any accumulated litter or materials (tree cuttings beneath established trees, heaps of bark, piles of wood) that are close to any building. • Pruning of any trees overhanging buildings; and • Removal of leaf litter and debris from all gutters and roofs. These standards should be maintained throughout the fire danger season, anticipated to be from 10th November 2014 to 30th April 2015. (However, these dates may be varied subject to seasonal weather conditions).

Council will soon commence assessment of properties for levels of flammable growth. If full hazard reduction works have not been addressed on the property, Council can issue a hazard reduction notice against the property owners, pursuant to the SA Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005, Part 4A, Division 4 105F. Further, if necessary, Council can undertake the required works at your expense and an expiation notice of $315.00 may be imposed on landowners who do not comply with the notice. However, your cooperation in ensuring that your property is adequately protected against possible fire outbreak is requested in the best interests of public safety. LOCAL Desperate plea to help grow Portland’s most iconic event With a five year sponsorship deal signed in 2014, record local club running numbers and interest from international runners, the Port of Portland 3 Bays Marathon is putting the tiny, picturesque Victorian town of Portland on the map. But while the event is growing at an impressive rate, organisers have put out a desperate plea for assistance to ensure they have the support to allow the popular event to keep growing at its current speed. Portland Runners Club President Tony Curran said there had been a rapidly mounting interest in recreational running in Portland, with 120 runners currently registered with the club. But he said the added interest had meant a strain on human resources to ensure event sustainability. “This will be the 31st running of the Port of Portland 3 Bays Marathon and while we are stronger than we have ever been, we know we need new faces to come on board to help keep the event thriving and growing to the potential we know we can reach,” he said. “The Runner’s Club also coordinates the Portland Winter Solstice Run in June each year and, in 2014, this was another event which exceeded our expectations in terms of participant numbers and post-event review, from both local based runners and visitors to our shire. “We want to continue to prove that Portland is a running destination that is worth travelling to and to do this we need a large pool of dedicated people committed to ensuring that we keep putting on the best events we can. “We also want to look after our growing number of local runners, through building the club’s recreational running capacity, such as coaching opportunities for all

running levels and regular, smaller event racing.” The original Runners Club was formed back in 1983 when a group of local runners was passionate about marathon running, and the idea of a local marathon (the 3 Bays Marathon) was hatched. “There is now a dedicated event planning program to help coordinate the 3 Bays event, with current organisers willing to provide assistance where needed,” Mr Curran said. “This is one of Australia’s most picturesque marathons and even if you’re not a runner, this is your chance to be part of a whole-of-community event, and help show off the best side of the town we call home. “Being involved is not difficult or overly time consuming but it’s incredibly rewarding.” There will be a Portland Runners Club Christmas Gathering on Wednesday, November 19, to celebrate the festive season and seek interest for future club involvement. The gates to this year’s Mount Gambier A&H Spring Show had not even officially opened, but that didn’t stop thousands of young students from throughout the region pouring through the beloved Agricultural Learning Centre last week. An animal menagerie consisting of couple of goats, three pigs, some yabbies, chickens, puppies, a sheep and cow, lambs and calves, guinea pigs and even an alpaca were patted and held by nearly 1600 students during the lead up to the show – with thousands more visiting the centre over the weekend. A traditional show favourite the Agricultural Learning Centre was in its 11th year under the care of Grant High School, with more than 60 students from Years 8-12 manning the centre over the five days.

LOCAL One in seven Australians 40 years or older has COPD. Half of those who have progressed to a stage where they are experiencing symptoms will not know that they have it. COPD is a leading cause of death in Australia. November 19 is World COPD Day and Lung Foundation Australia is raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of COPD. On Monday, November 17, the Millicent Respiratory Support Group will combine with the Community Health Respiratory Nurse and Physiotherapists to highlight lung disease and it’s treatment as well as promote the services offered by support groups in Mt Gambier Central Shopping Centre from 11am until 2pm. COPD is a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma that isn’t fully reversible. It is important to recognise the risk factors and symptoms of COPD so that you can get an early diagnosis. The main risk factors in Australia are: • current or past history of smoking • occupational exposure to dust, gas or fumes There are also some genetic causes of COPD. Some typical symptoms include breathlessness, a cough that won’t go away and phlegm production. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a special program of exercise and education that helps you: • Breathe easier • Improve your quality of life • Resume activities that you had given up • Stay out of hospital • Reduces fatigue, anxiety and depression • Improves exercise capacity If you are interested in starting a support group in Mt Gambier or visiting/joining the Millicent Respiratory Support Group, we hold monthly meetings (the third Monday of each month) at Banksia House, Mt Gambier Road, Millicent at 3pm. LOCAL Adult driver program on oﬀer When was the last time you updated your road skills? If it’s been awhile you may be deemed at ‘high risk’ of being involved in a car accident or may be passing on the wrong information to your children or grandchildren when teaching them to drive. The District Council of Grant’s ‘Geared2Drive’ adult driver program was recently selected as one of three outstanding SGIC Community Grant recipients to be nominated for the 2014 SGIC People’s Choice Award, and the SGIC Road Safety Grant will enable the Council to run two free Driver Awareness Workshops in Mount Gambier and Port MacDonnell, which will be open to all adult drivers. The Workshops will be presented by the SA Police Traffic Division with an aim to increase awareness of the new Australian road rules, road safety, factors that influence your fitness to drive, online driving assessment updates, and how to self-regulate your driving. “According to SA Police statistics, 2013 we saw a 16% increase in the number of fatalities on our roads. We want to assist in turning this around by promoting safe driving skills to our youth through our Geared2Drive Program, and now our adult drivers through our Driver Awareness Workshops,” said Jan McIntyre, District Council of Grant’s Community Development Team Leader. The aim of the workshops is to increase the community’s understanding of road rules, provide practical road safety tips and ultimately, reduce accidents on local roads. The workshops, while open to those of all ages, are targeted at those people who have had their licences for some time without being able to

access up to date road rules and driver awareness information. A discussion paper released from Flinders University School of Medicine in 2013 identified that, in general, older people are good drivers but the aging process can have a negative impact on their ability to drive safely. Data from the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure show that drivers over 65 are increasingly more likely to suffer a fatality in an accident than younger individuals. As many people are now teaching not only their children but their grandchildren how to drive, the workshops will also provide information on what it means to be a qualified supervising driver, your role and responsibilities. The workshops will be held at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club on Wednesday from 2pm followed by afternoon tea at 3.30pm and the Port MacDonnell Community Complex on Thursday commencing at 10am. Free return transport is available from Tarpeena to the Mount Gambier session but bookings are essential. LOCAL Celebrating 150 years of the Mount Gambier Baptist Church This weekend is a huge weekend for the Mount Gambier Baptist Church as members past and present commemorate its 150th anniversary of serving this community. Many past members and pastors are expected to attend the weekend’s milestone event, which will also see a celebration dinner on Saturday night. It all started back in the home of James and Christina Smith and is now sitting with a bird’s eye view of the city it serves on North Terrace. In the interim years, the congregation met in Sturt Street, Bertha Street, Watson Terrace and then Helen Street , which was home to the church at two separate locations. The Baptist Church at one time also had a base in McArthur Street, Mount Gambier, to serve the northern sector of the city. And of course, the church is about so much more than the buildings it has called home for its Sunday services, it has also been an active community group, running a variety of programs over the years, including Sunday Schools, playgroups and the popular, long standing craft group Hi-Time, which ran for 20 years and used to see around 250 people pack the North Terrace building on a Thursday morning. Many initiatives have been pursued over the years– a white goods program, provision for school lunches for hungry children, an op shop which operated for many years, a living skills program, (menu planning, shopping wisely, housekeeping, basic first aid), Cross Roads (a program aimed at providing social activities and interaction for young adults with disabilities) and an ongoing Solid Rock Café run each year since 1997, at the Mt Gambier Show. The Mount Gambier Baptist Church has also become a key partner for the Karen community in Mount Gambier – who use the church each week for their Sunday school and church service. Many volunteers have assisted in the settlement of these refugees, working in conjunction with the Limestone Coast Migrant Resource Centre, helping with driving lessons, conversational English classes, citizenship classes, doctor’s visits.

SECBL - Local Basketball An enjoyable day of tennis was had by 28 players at Penola earlier this month for the South East Tennis Seniors. Wendy MacDonald, from Mount Gambier, took out the ladies side of the draw, with Bordertown’s Fran Hill and Glencoe’s Chris Cram tying for runner-up honours. Mt Burr’s Bill Chapman took out the men’s event from Mount Gambier’s Colin Rex. Murray Bridge will host the South East Tennis Seniors on November 9, at 10am, with the next local event to be held at Glencoe on November 16, at 11am. Lunch will be provided.

The veteran all rounder was given a leave pass to throw the bat in Yahl’s second innings as the brown caps tried to set up the chance of an outright victory and Clayton, a renowned big hitter, didn’t need to be asked twice and the Mil Lel attack paid the price. He was dropped four times but made the most of every life, reaching the boundary 15 times and clearing it four times, meaning 84 of his unbeaten 102 came in boundaries. Fellow allrounder Andy Paltridge (17) and teenager Ben Gibbs (25) had a front row seat at the other end and with a 34 run first innings lead and a further 149 added in the second, Yahl came perilously close to that outright win but Mil Lel just held on, finishing on 8/130 with Justin Taylor (22no) providing the lower order resistance. Josh Reader almost emerged the hero with the ball, taking 6/15. South Gambier easily claimed the points against East Gambier, while North Gambier was also far too good for Kalangadoo. Chasing 137 for victory against West Gambier, Kongorong recovered from 6/70 to pile on 248 to unexpectedly start 2014/15 with a victory. Mark Smith (33) and Ben Hentschke (60) started the recovery and then a quality 74 from Josh Wright ensured the Hawks secured the points.
