COVER Hidden treasures around every corner It’s definitely a sickness – ask anyone who collects antiques and collectables. Not being able to not stop at that little junk shop just in case that one little piece you want is tucked away on a bottom shelf. To routinely visit all the local op shops as soon as they open so as to not miss out. Collectors come in all types of people. The button lady searching through thousands of buttons looking for that one special glass button. The young collector always full of knowledge and ready to correct you at every chance. The blokey collector who has to sneak his latest finds into his shed when his wife’s not home. The decorator – usually a woman, who changes her decor as often as she changes her mind and keeping dealers in business. People collect for many reasons – reclaiming something from their childhood, the challenge of identifying and dating items, sometimes investment, or even just fun. There’s not better feeling than finding something for a couple of dollars to find out later, it is worth much more. Some of the most popular collectables are old toys, English china, depression glass, petrol and oil memorabilia, vintage jewellery and fashion, art nouveau and art deco and Australian pottery. For many collectors now is the time to buy, as many pieces have come down significantly in price. Australian cedar is still very sought after, as is anything French Provincial, while painted furniture is very popular and the re-purposing of pieces can show creativity and save a lot of money. Mount Gambier now has a veritable paradise for collectors in the South East and Western Districts in the newly redeveloped Charlick’s Bazaar. Consisting of 12 stallholders, displaying thousands of items in almost 500sqm, Charlick’s Bazaar will be trading seven days a week as from the end of this month. From 200 year old china to 1970s retro, from pottery and glassware to silver, Charlick’s is also hoping to open its doors onto the railway land parklands in December. Michael O’Brien is the new owner of Charlick’s Bazaar and brings more than 25 years experience in the antique

trade to the role, working in auction houses in Melbourne and displays at antique fairs across Australia. He specialises in ceramics, silver and art deco. Currently collectors can delve for hidden treasures from 10am to 5pm from Thursday to Monday and if you’re looking to sell something old, be it an estate, or single item, then contact Mike from Thursday to Saturday or bring it into the shop for a valuation.

ADVERTORIAL I Odyssey Vein Clinic Non-surgical leg vein treatment and cosmetic injectables

Dr. Emma Nolan and practice manager Kerryn Harvey established their business Odyssey Vein Clinic to offer non surgical treatment of larger or varicose veins of the legs. They have been established in Mount Gambier for three years now and visit approximately every four weeks “Now Is an ideal time to tackle your leg veins,” said Dr. Nolan. Dr. Nolan has 14 years experience treating varicose veins non surgically with a technique called ultra-sound guided sclerotherapy. This technique involves injecting the veins instead of stripping them – it takes about 45 minutes and involves no anaesthetic, surgery, or time off work. “We offer a consult, scan, and treatment all on the same day which minimises travelling time,” Dr Nolan said. “It also means that patients don’t have to travel to Melbourne or Adelaide for treatment.”

Odyssey also offers facial volumisers the liquid facelift, paralysing injections for wrinkles and dermal fillers for facial lines and folds. “We have had a terrific response to the cosmetic side of the business—the fact that we visit monthly and can see our cosmetic patients at short notice is a big plus,” Dr Nolan said. No GP referral is required. For more information visit www.odysseyveinclinic. com.au or contact Kerryn on 0403 965 548

LOCAL Experience the MAGIC It was the brain child of Robbie Greene and is hosted by the Rotary Club of Casterton and the local garden club. Now in its third year, MAGIC at Casterton was first held in 2010 and then in 2011, when the organising committee decided holding the event bi-annually would be preferable. A lack of volunteer power stymied the 2013 attempt but it has been resurrected with a vengeance and set to be as popular as ever. MAGIC 2014 at Casterton is a celebration of spring and a showcase of the district’s creative talents, sprawling, well manicured gardens and local produce. Best known as the birthplace of the kelpie, Casterton is more than a June Long Weekend working dog extravaganza and MAGIC at Casterton ensures locals and visitors alike are familiar with all the hidden treasures in this South West Victorian hamlet. This year’s event is on October 26, with five gardens on display. But while the event certainly captures the attention of avid gardeners, it offers so much more with historic buildings on show, a native and exotic bird collection, a monster garage sale, delectable catering and a raft of musical and visual talent also front and centre at the main venues. From sculpture to jewellery, from jazz to classical, from boxed picnics to high tea delights, each of the five gardens offer something for everyone who registers from 10am at the ticket and map collection point opposite Casterton Secondary College at 26 Mount Gambier Road. Tickets are $20, and group purchases will be given welcoming gifts as part of the package.

A free shuttle bus will leave each venue every 15 minutes, but for the self-propelled, there is ample car parking at each location. Justwood Popular at each MAGIC, Justwood is a 20 year labour of love for the Gibbs family. The well-established garden features cottage and formal plantings, as well as practical areas such as a vegetable garden and a designated play area for the grandchildren. The garden takes some time to explore, with hidden nooks and crannies of beauty to be discovered. Gardening demonstrations by a qualified horticulturalist will be offered during the day (timetable available at registration). Select stalls offering quality crafts will be located at the venue, and garden party style luncheons will be available for purchase. Russell Street The home is a Federation showpiece and was the hub of Casterton’s social life in the early 1900s. The garden has tennis courts, a stable and an indoor pool area, and is a beautiful setting for an extensive display by regional artists. Paintings and sculptures will be on display and available for purchase. Guitarist Mike Walsh and violinist Cathy Foster will play throughout the day, with an inspiring mix of classical and jazz pieces. Take time to find a shady spot on the lawn and enjoy a gourmet boxed picnic lunch available for purchase at the venue. Robertson Street Certainly one of the highlights of this garden must be the view. The garden has been carefully designed and developed to take advantage of the glorious views over the Glenelg River and the whole town. This garden progressed with the family in mind, with an entertainment area centred around an in-ground pool, and a peaceful nook in memory of a family member who recently died. Casterton Vice-Regal band will entertain visitors at this location and watercolours, garden sculptures and jewellery made by regional artists will be available for purchase. Meg’s Manor This is a true country garden, about 8 kilometres from the town centre. As well as extensive plantings of more than 5000 trees, the garden has aviaries of native and exotic birds, and a collection of historic memorabilia, including heritage farm implements. The rose collection has about 250 species, including climbers, and there is a fernery to take shelter during the hottest part of the day. Australian natives thrive in this setting. This garden is a “must-see”. Refreshments will be available, and stalls. McEvoy Street Only in a small town like Casterton could a whole street of householders be prepared to join together for a charitable cause. McEvoy Street residents have agreed to have their front gardens available for the admiration of visitors to MAGIC, in a “walk-by” garden tour. Roses are a feature, but the different gardeners’ styles are sure to inspire. The residents have also organised a Monster Garage Sale to take place during the day, so arrive early to steal a bargain

Hamilton Cup October 26 The Hamilton Cup is South West Victoria’s major race day during the spring carnival. Whether it’s enjoying a day at the races or a function in one of our three function facilities, the Hamilton Racing Club (HRC) will make sure you have an enjoyable and memorable experience.

LOCAL Walking a mile in someone else’s shoes One thing Naomi O’Brien and her sister-in-law Rune Axisa haven’t found while training for their first marathon, is an advice manual on how to do it blindfolded. Yet, while the rest of the runners are admiring one of Australia’s most picturesque marathon courses as part of the Port of Portland 3 Bays Marathon on November, 2 the bold pair won’t see a thing. They will walk the 42kms completely blind to raise money and awareness for the new Insight Education Centre, the only Victorian school for blind and vision impaired children. But it’s not just a fundraising effort that has made this challenge significant for the duo - Ms O’Brien is the mother of 11 year-old Noah, a legally blind student at Insight. The former Portland resident competed in the 3 Bays Half Marathon last year and when her sister-in-law asked her to walk the entire 42kms, she agreed on condition that they achieve more than just sore legs for the effort. As a founding member of the school, she has been closely involved in Insight’s creation since 2009. “Insight has been a strong passion of mine since its inception and I’ve seen firsthand the benefits the school has had and is still having for my son Noah,” she said. “After starting at Insight, he progressed from reading a basic Year 2 level to reading complete novels in just one term.” So the challenge was set and together they will walk, with a guide, each mile (or 26 to be accurate) in their shoes. In Australia, according to a Vision Australia National Survey conducted in 2012, 63 per cent of blind adults are unemployed. If this does not change, every year more than six out of every ten blind and vision impaired students who leave school will not find a job. “These are

the children who need our help,” Ms O’Brien said. “Anecdotal evidence and Blind Citizens Australia Submission 331 to the Federal Department of Education, Science and Training National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy show that Australian blind students struggle daily to gain self-confidence, life skills and self-esteem and, more importantly, the basic building blocks of education – numeracy and literacy. “Insight is providing these important skills to children all over Victoria as they launch their mobile and satellite classrooms in combination with their newly established school in Berwick.” There are about 1,000 blind or vision impaired children and young people Victoria-wide, ranging in age from 0 to early 20s. Despite this, until Insight Specialist Primary School opened in 2013, there was no longer a school for the blind and vision impaired anywhere in Victoria. If you would like to sponsor Naomi and Rune in their challenge, please donate online at www.insightvision.org.au and follow the DONATE button. Remember to put 3 BAYS into the special message.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

My Bon Scott Irene Arthurson In 1971 Adelaide girl Irene Thornton meets Bon Scott, the singer for local band Fraternity. He is a larrikin showman with a smile that rules the world. Between Bon and Irene, there is a unique spark; they marry in 1972. For the next few years, with Irene by his side, Bon Scott continues a driven but difficult journey towards AC/DC and rock ‘n’ roll fame. Irene gives us the scene without the airbrushing: the bitter winters in London with Fraternity, the drinking and drugs, the group living and frayed tempers, and the broken dreams and inner demons.

It took the winning team just 1 minute and 38 seconds to pull a 22.5 tonne Kenworth B-Double 100m to the finish line, duringthe Fennell Forestry Truck Pull Challenge earlier this month. All five teams managed to complete the epic challenge, but only one could claim victory, with Fennell Forestry taking home the silverware and bragging rights in front of a strong crowd at the Glenburnie Saleyards. This year, local teams Fennell Forestry, Tough Fit Health and Fitness Trading, Tabeel Trading, Porthaul and the 2013 Tough Tribe “originals” all accepted the challenge, chipping in the $500 entry fee for well known children’s charity, Variety. With each of the eight team members harnessed and attached to ropes anchored to the front grill of the Fennell

Forestry B-Double and unloaded Thinwall chip trailer, it was brute strength alone which would get the truck moving. And now, days after the event, the fundraising tally has been confirmed, with almost $9000 in the kitty thanks to support from local businesses in the lead-up to the event, and everyone who dug deep for the Variety representatives who attended on the day. Fennell Forestry Managing Director and event organiser Wendy Fennell said while she was glad to see her team notch up a win on Saturday, the day’s real winner was Variety. “The day was perfect really, we couldn’t have planned it better - the sun was shining, the rivalry was friendly and there was plenty to see and do,” she said. “But we couldn’t have done it without the support of many local businesses, namely our Gold sponsors, the Barry Maney Group and Trident Tyre Centre, who really made it a worthwhile day for charity. “We’ll look forward to doing it all again in a year’s time!” To see more pictures and video, or to make a donation to Variety, visit the official Fennell Forestry Truck Pull Challenge Facebook page at www.facebook/TruckPull2014.com.

LOCAL Classic tale set to come to life at festival

Seniors Month

Seniors Month Event- Seniors of the Year Award Presentation - MILLICENT & DISTRICT COMMUNITY CLUB October 31 - 1.30-3.30pm The Senior of the Year award will be presented by Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi. Entertainment and live music. A delicious afternoon tea to help celebrate the event. Bookings essential phone (08)8733 0900.

United Way Glenelg (UWG) and OzChild will share the joy of reading with the youngest attendees at the Portland Upwelling Festival next month via a unique project. The local organisations have banded together to create an innovative and interactive children’s space at the festival, themed around classic picture book, “There’s a Sea in My Bedroom.” Children are encouraged to freely explore the installation by lying on the bed, playing in the “sea” and enjoying a range of activities based on the book. Local identity “Aunt Hilary” will also be on hand for regular readings of the story; 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm. Children who came along to the readings will be given a FREE copy of the book “There’s a sea in My Bedroom”. With as many as 22% of Glenelg Shire children starting school without the required literacy and numeracy skills UWG executive officer Nicole Angelino said it was vital to show children that reading can be fun. “At United Way Glenelg we believe education is a key building block to a good life so we are keen to improve early literacy by engaging children in reading and encouraging the entire community to work together to foster a lifetime love of learning in our youngest residents,” she said. Ozchild early childhood practitioner Amanda Merryfull said reading to children was an important element of language, emotional and social development. “The inclusive, whole-community Upwelling Festival is the perfect time to remind community members that everyone has a role to play in boosting early literacy levels and helping children in the Glenelg Shire to enjoy the lifelong benefits that early literacy

brings,” she said. OZChild is involved in supporting local indigenous playgroups. Part of the role is introducing the local Keerray Wooroong language with the support Victorian Aboriginal Corporation of Language. “Some of the words from the book “There’s a sea in my bedroom” will be translated in addition to rhymes about the sea,” said Ms Merryfull. Drop into “There’s a Sea in My Bedroom” at the Portland Angling Club as part of the Portland Upwelling Festival on Saturday November 1 from 11am – 2pm. Reading times will be 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is building the libraries of young children throughout the Glenelg Shire. With vital support from Portland Aluminium children who register will receive a FREE book each month from birth to five years old. Information on registering will be available on the day. Event sponsors are Glenelg Shire Council, Penguin Books, United Way Glenelg, OZChild, Portland Aluminium and Braithwaite’s Homemakers & Sleepzone.

LOCAL A Chief of Allied Health has been appointed at Portland District Health in a new role designed to strengthen services for the community. Paul Tuvey has taken on the role and will oversee a growing team of allied health professionals. Mr Tuvey is a physiotherapist with 14 years’ experience and has worked in tertiary teaching health services including community health settings in both clinical and front line management roles. He will also continue working as a physiotherapist at PDH. Director Primary & Community Health Fiona Heenan said the new position would help PDH to ensure its allied health service meets local demand. “Having a new person to provide clinical governance and look for opportunities and funding to advance our services will enable us to strengthen and better coordinate our services,” Ms Heenan said. The role includes management of the allied health team, clinical work and supervision of graduates and students. “It is well timed with the recent announcement of funding for a new primary and community health precinct at the hospital,” Ms Heenan said. Mr Tuvey said the opportunity to take on a new role in a rural location attracted him to the job. “It’s a real life opportunity to manage a team of allied health clinicians and to start a new lifestyle with my family,” he said. Mr Tuvey’s wife Marguerite and their two young children are moving from Melbourne to live in the area. “I’ve worked in the country previously and enjoyed it and found there is a wider scope to the work,” he said. “Portland is also a lovely area and a very friendly place,” he said. He said allied health was a growing field helping people to remain in their homes and maintain independence.”

2014 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards FEATURE Honouring Mount Gambier’s best businesses A century old printing company; long standing electrical contractors and a timber industry valueadding industry leader were all the headline acts at the NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards gala presentation earlier this month. Exchange Printers, Gabriel Electrical Contractors and Van Schaik’s Bio Gro were all inducted into the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame, recognising their long standing excellence in their chosen fields, their unrelenting commitment to the Mount Gambier community and their contribution to the local economic landscape over an extended period. For Exchange Printers, the accolade capped off a year in which the company celebrated its centenary.

AT THE GALLERY Remembrance RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER Remembrance is a South East Art Society Inc. members’ exhibition themed to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of when World War 1 began. WWI commenced on August 5, 1914 when England declared war on Germany and as a result many thousands of Australians enlisted, taking part in many battles against the Turks and Germans. Tens of thousands of Australians made the supreme sacrifice and many more suffered for the rest of their lives. August this year 2014 will be one hundred years since this terrible period in our history, and deserves to be recognised and honoured by every Australian.

2014 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards FEATURE Honouring Mount Gambier’s best businesses From page 25 Such sustained excellence, and under the custodianship of one family, made Exchange Printers a perfect fit for Hall of Fame honours, with long time honour Ross Clark on had to accept the award, with nephew Barry Clark, the current owner, also a key ingredient of the Exchange Printers success story. The iconic Mount Gambier business has survived and evolved with changes in technology and customer needs to continue to be as relevant today as it was in its early years. Gabriel Electrical Contractors and Van Schaik’s Bio Gro were also honoured and while they have not hit the century mark, like their fellow inductee, they both have left an indelible mark on the Mount Gambier commercial landscape. For Gabriel’s it has been about sustained reliable and efficient service, while Van Schaik’s have been industry leaders in value adding to the timber industry and setting the pace in innovation. All three Hall of Fame inductees have also been significant contributors to the local economy through their generous support of local sporting groups and community organisations. The other major gongs of the night went the way of

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Training by Robbie Tansel I’m officially in training for this year’s Blue Lake Fun Run. I thought I’d broken my foot for about a fortnight after last year’s run and the honest truth is there’s still a dull ache in my heel twelve months down the track. With that in mind I decided that it would be a good idea to do some sort of preparation for this year’s run. One of the reasons for doing a bit of training is to improve my fitness and hopefully make the run a little less challenging. I’m also hoping that if I go for some runs I might drop a kilogram or two and have less pudge slamming down on my feet and knees with every step. I must say I’ve come to enjoy exercise. While I’m running the streets of Mount Gambier I find it gets me away from all of my problems. I’m not thinking of my problems at work. I’m not thinking of relationship

issues. I’m not worried about any of my other problems. It’s hard to think of anything other than the fact it feels like my heart could explode at any second. I had considered a couple of other ways of shedding weight. Amputation seemed like a quick ways to get my weight down but it would come with its own range of issues. Which body part for starters? Taking a leg would help with my weight but still make the Fun Run challenging. Sickness would be another possible solution. Ebola wouldn’t be so bad if it helped me drop ten kilos. While we’re talking about Ebola, let’s talk about what must be some of the stupidest people in the world. As I write this it has been announced that a second American nurse in Texas has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus. Both of these nurses had been treating a Liberian national in Texas who subsequently died. During the man’s treatment there had been tight quarantine conditions in place. So let’s be clear, even when the “experts” are doing everything they can to prevent the spread of this massively deadly disease, it still spreads to nurses who should understand the risks as well as anyone…which makes what happens next a little puzzling. One of the nurses had already contracted the disease and no-one thought to tell the rest of the people who had been treating him it might be worth laying low for a little while. As if it’s bad enough no-one thought to tell the medical staff to avoid people just in case, obviously this woman didn’t figure it out for herself. Instead she jumped on an aeroplane and went for a little flight with scores of innocent citizens, subjecting them to the risk of contracting the disease. Some pretty good questions will need to be asked about that one I suspect. It’s another one of those occasions where we’re all reminded that just because someone wears a white coat, carries a stethoscope and is a doctor, it doesn’t mean they’re always right. I guess the good news is that at least if some Americans have the disease there could be a serious response to the issue. As we all know, it doesn’t really matter how many Africans die but Americans are important. Dead Africans don’t matter to Tony Abbot but we’re all in if America needs us. How many times do we hear news reports that say, “A plane crashed in Pakistan killing all of the two hundred and forty passengers on board. Three Americans were amongst those who died.” Presumably that means that two hundred and thirty seven equally significant humans died. I’m not making that one up. The bad news about the Americans getting involved in solving the Ebola crisis is that they generally solve problems by bombing things. Anyway maybe having a few Ebola sufferers in Mount Gambier could help with my training. It will give me an incentive to put in when I’m running to get as far away as possible from any person I see. If you think you might have Ebola, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL Seven emergency services agencies were represented at the Glenelg Shire Municipal Emergency Management Committee and Fire Management Planning Committee meetings today, the last briefing prior to the official start of the bushfire season. Glenelg Shire Council representatives were joined by VicRoads, Parks Victoria, Volunteer Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victorian Police, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries at the Portland Council Chambers to ensure final arrangements were in place. Committee Chairperson, Cr Karen Stephens said that the Glenelg Shire had experienced several different emergency incidents over the last 12-18 months, with the most significant being the Pitch Slip at the Port of Portland, a couple of major traffic incidents and two significant bushfires. “When we experience these significant incidents it requires a multiple agency approach to ensure the safety and protection of the community,” Cr Stephens said. “At the meeting we received also an update from the Portland Volunteer Coast Guide with Cyril Cram advising that a total of 32 rescues had been undertaken by the volunteers in the last 12 months. “The establishment of the two Glenelg Municipal Emergency Management Committees has enabled all agencies the opportunity to have roundtable discussions and to keep abreast of the State Government changes in its approach to Emergency Management.” As part of the meeting Committee Chairperson, Cr Karen Stephens confirmed that there were seven declared Neighbourhood Safer Places for the 2014/15 Fire Danger Period, with Glenelg Shire Council’s website to be updated ahead of the season.

LOCAL Following in the footsteps of his brother, Warrnambool pharmacist Efrem Kibret left poverty stricken Ethiopia in 2007 to seek a better life in Australia for his family. His journey to citizenship wasn’t always easy but it has been worth the effort. After six years of sponsorship, work visas and bridging visas, Mr Kibret gained citizenship in 2013. “I’m an Aussie now and I’ll remain an Aussie,” he said. Mr Kibret’s story is one of four being told in a new exhibition `Broadening Horizons: Stories of Immigration to the South West’ that will be staged at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village until Thursday, December 4. This exhibition is mounted by Deakin University Warrnambool Campus students as part of an applied community project for their undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Students use objects, photos and text to tell the personal stories of four people or families who have immigrated to the Western District, revealing fascinating but often untold parts of local history. Mr Kibret got a one-year visa to visit Australia in August 2007 but his visits were limited to three-month stints where he would seek pharmacy work. With only a few days remaining on his first visa and no jobs on the horizon, Mr Kibret had decided he would return home. However, with his flights already booked he was offered a position in Warrnambool. After returning home again he was again offered a one-year bridging visa to return to Australia and continue his training. There were further trips between Australia and Ethiopia before Mr Kibret returned with a three-year visa to work in a regional area, which suited perfectly with his Warrnambool connection. “I really liked the opportunity to come here to undertake further study and for the educational opportunities for my kids,” he said The exhibition also traces the migration stories of families from Ireland, England and Poland.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear Anti-reflective coatings Anti-reflective coating (also called AR coating or anti-glare coating) improves both your vision through your lenses and the appearance of your glasses. Both benefits are due to AR coating’s ability to eliminate reflections of light from the front and back surface of eyeglass lenses. Regular plastic lenses reflect roughly 8 percent of light hitting the lenses, so only 92 percent of available light enters the eye for vision. This can be particularly troublesome in low-light conditions, such as when driving at night. Today’s modern anti-reflective coatings can virtually eliminate the reflection of light from eyeglass lenses, allowing 99.5 percent of available light to pass through the lenses and enter the eye for good vision. Anti-reflective coating reduces the glare that you see, as well as the glare that others can see on your lenses. By eliminating reflections, AR coating also makes your lenses look nearly invisible so people can see your eyes and facial expressions more clearly. Anti-reflective glasses also are more attractive, so you can look your best in all lighting conditions. The visual benefits of lenses with anti-reflective coating include sharper vision with less glare when driving at night and greater comfort during prolonged computer use. Anti-reflective coating also is a good idea for sunglasses,

because it eliminates glare from sunlight reflecting into your eyes from the back surface of tinted lenses when the sun is behind you. Most premium anti-reflective coatings include a “hydrophobic” surface layer that prevents water spots from forming and makes the lenses easier to clean. Some AR coatings also include an “oleophobic” surface layer that repels skin oils and makes it easier to remove smudges from the lenses. Caring for Glasses With Anti-Reflective Lenses Don’t attempt to clean AR-coated lenses without wetting them first. Using a dry cloth on a dry lens can cause lens scratches and because anti-reflective coating eliminates light reflections that can mask lens surface defects, fine scratches often are more visible on AR-coated lenses than on uncoated lenses. When cleaning AR-coated lenses, use only products that your optometrist recommends. Lens cleaners with harsh chemicals may damage the anti-reflective coating. Finally using a microfiber cloth helps give the lens a great finish. But make sure you wash the cloth or replace it regularly otherwise you could scratch the AR-coat. With a little care, you will love the benefit of clearer vision that the ARcoat gives you new glasses.

LOCAL Iconic tower re-opens

ADVERTORIAL I Presto By The Main Rising stars of the food industry join forces

The flag is once again flying at one of Mount Gambier’s iconic tourism facilities. The flying flag has long indicated the Caretaker’s presence and that the historic Centenary Tower is open to view or to climb its spiral stairs to enjoy magnificent uninterrupted vistas from its viewing platforms. Council is pleased that the role of caretaker at Centenary Tower has been filled after a period of vacancy following the former caretaker’s retirement earlier this year. Earlier this month, Jaymee VanderHeul commenced in the caretaker role, and after a few days of cleaning and preparing tourism material and refreshments, Jaymee had the precarious job of accessing the tower roof to raise the flag for the first time in readiness to greet more than 200 local and tourist visitors over the October long weekend. City of Mount Gambier chief executive officer Mark McShane said council officers had fielded enquiries over many months from persons interested in the caretaker role and had been mindful of finding a person to represent the city and provide an active contribution to tourism in the city. “We are excited to have Jaymee commence in this role with her level of enthusiasm and interest in the Centenary Tower” Mr McShane said. In addition

to providing a visitor service at this unique and iconic facility, Jaymee will also work co-operatively with operators of other council tourism sites including the Lady Nelson Visitor Information Centre to help raise the profile of Mount Gambier and its unique environment and give the city’s visitors and tourists a memorable experience. The Centenary Tower will now be open during periods when it is likely that visitors, tourists and education groups would wish to access the tower, including weekends, public and school holidays (SA & Vic), Entry is by a gold coin contribution and is free for children under 12, making the Centenary Tower a lowcost must see destination. Refreshments and locally made souvenirs are also are available for purchase so make your way up to the peak and treat yourself to a cold drink or a hot coffee and a friendly chat. For further information please contact Jaymee Vanderheul on 0439 042 692 or The Lady Nelson Visitor Information Centre on (08) 8724 9750 or email It should be noted that the Tower was closed for some essential internal maintenance work last week, with the flag flown when it re-opened at the weekend.

For someone who is only 23 years old, Josslyn Lee has achieved so much and the talented chef and business owner has now been joined by fellow rising star Lucy Von Stanke as co-director of The Main and Presto By The Main. Lucy has been a part of the team on and off for some time and when the opportunity presented to be part owner of the business, she jumped at the opportunity. It was a necessary development for the business – with Presto going great guns with its breakfast, lunch and coffee trade and The Main busy with both its on and off site catering for functions, it was imperative another full time chef came on board. Just this past weekend, the girls had four catering jobs in Coonawarra and Mount Gambier over three days. Presto is all about convenience without compromising on taste, with its gourmet take away menu that blends street food with clean treats, and, of course, great organic coffee. The Main is all about tailor made functions for your

next special occasion, including weddings, and with Christmas shows on the horizon, the girls can plan the perfect event, whether it be a sit down extravaganza or a cocktail event from their wide range of delicious canapés and finger food. A Chief of Allied Health has been appointed at Portland District Health in a new role designed to strengthen services for the community Paul Tuvey has taken on the role and will oversee a growing team of allied health professionals. “Portland is also a lovely area and a very friendly place,” he said. He said allied health was a growing field helping people to remain in their homes and maintain independence.” The allied health team at PDH includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, podiatrists, exercise physiologists, speech therapists and counselling.
