Head to Millicent

Western Border football & netball grand finals September 20 McLaughlin Park (Millicent) Five football and seven netball flags are up for grabs in Millicent this weekend as Western Border wraps up its season.

The Western Border Netball Association has never seen a player exhibit such sustained excellence in its competition over such a long period of time and it has hard to see anyone emulating those feats in our lifetime and beyond. And on Sunday, Donna Denton was honoured on two fronts – claiming her eighth A grade association best & fairest title and being inducted into Western Border Netball Association life membership. Her first best & fairest came as a teenager in 1994 and then of course there has been a triumphant return as a premiership State League player from her time studying in Adelaide. She returned to Millicent in 2000 and has won eight best & fairest accolades in the ensuing 15 seasons. There are a couple of runner-up performances in that time, as well as time out of the game to have children and a serious knee injury – it just doesn’t get better than that. Denton won the 2014 count by four votes – pipping team mate and now coach Lisa Duldig for the second consecutive season. She was best on court in seven games across the 17 round season and polled in 14 games. That performance also secured her a share of the Most Consistent award. The life membership was arguably overdue and also inevitable and while her on court achievements alone would have warranted the honour, Denton has also been a hard working administrator of the game as registration officer for many years, as well as coordinating Millicent’s Net Set Go program, the netball equivalent of Auskick. She also stepped back from A grade coaching years, handing the reins to Duldig, a player she cultivated as a junior, to take on the 13 & under age group and start passing on her expertise to a new generation of Western Border stars. Denton was, not surprisingly, named in 2014 Deakin University Team of the Year, alongside Saints team mates Duldig, Hayley Dunn and debutante Alex Walker. In fact, it was a team of many new faces with

Walker joined by other first time selections in Casterton Sandford’s Ellen Brewster, South’s Alyssa Boylan, West’s Carly Trevilyan and North’ Abbey Duncan. The remaining two selections were multiple team of the year inclusions – West’s Lisa Cram and North coach Audine Bryant. Duldig was named coach of the year after not missing a beat since taking over from Denton and guiding the Saints to another undefeated season. Overall, the Western Border Netball Association count was dominated by South Gambier – taking out five of the seven individual honours and finishing runner-up in one other grade. And while in the final wash up, the Demons would be disappointed to have only two teams in premiership deciders this weekend, after six of their seven teams made finals, to take home the vast majority of the silverware from Casterton and also be named the most improved and the champion club for 2014 was some consolation. South Gambier’s winner were Toni Sims (A Reserve); Kelsie Grubb (B Grade); Lorelie Ellis (C Grade); Olivia Dukalskis (15 & under) and Jordyn Adams (13 & Under) – Megan Hein also finished runner-up to star Casterton Sandford defender Tayla Guthrie in the 17 & under count, with East’s Rachael Hines also claiming runner-up honours in that grade. Brianna Walters won the Best Under 21 player in A grade, while Casterton Sandford won the Most Disciplined Club.

Full details and photos on the Lifestyle1 facebook page and in sport (pages 44-46). Above (top) - Donna Denton was inducted into life membership. Above (left) - 2014 best & fairest Donna Denton with runner-up Lisa Duldig.

Re/Max Limestone Real Estate

THE RE/MAX STORY

Bringing the world’s biggest real estate company to the Limestone Coast In the wake of that most auspicious of occasions, the AFL Grand Final, Graeme Cleves opens RE/MAX Limestone Real Estate this month with a lifetime in Mount Gambier standing behind the introduction of one of the world’s most recognized brands to the community. The RE/MAX reach is 95 countries, over 6500 offices, and approximately 100,000 people employed or contracted worldwide. RE/MAX Australia Managing Director, Michael Davoren, said RE/MAX currently outperformed all other real estate businesses in the world based on volume of sales and many other criteria. “RE/MAX was founded in 1973 with an innovative, entrepreneurial culture that gives its agents and franchisees the flexibility to operate their businesses with great independence,” Mr Davoren said. “RE/MAX Australia currently has a 63-office network and more than 540 associates, with another 16 offices in Western Australia; and the growth of the RE/MAX brand in Australia is testament to the seriousness we place on having the best people in our office, people like Graeme and his growing team, as well as its business model. “RE/MAX Australia agents are prominent in monthly international top 100 rankings; and our Australian network is gathering reputation as an industry leader with cutting edge marketing that strategically involve social media, systems, structures and business models for the future. “RE/MAX Australia is an integral part of the global growth and success of the brand.” On the opening team to supporting Graeme, whose real estate career heads towards 15 years, are his wife and experienced administrator, Helen Cleves, and Toni Gilmore, who has honed her real estate skills in sales, property management and administration over 14 years. “My goal has always been to have the largest and best real estate team in the south east of this State,” said Graeme, “And RE/MAX is best placed to help me achieve this.” A man who has built an enviable reputation on being an honest, reliable and liked local who ‘tells it how it is’ is no stranger to industry accolades either, having won many individual sales awards and coming a close second for the 2010 Real Estate Institute of South Australia Excellence in Real Estate team award. After being a leading Mount Gambier residential, rural and commercial real estate sales consultant for many years, Graeme admits that his success is as much about love and passion for real estate as it is expertise. “I have been fortunate enough to be recognized as high profile, successful real estate professional, I love this region and its communities, and I have every confidence I will quickly establish the

The Re/Max Limestone Real Estate team - Helen Cleves, Graeme Cleves & Toni Gilmore. best sales and property management teams under the RE/MAX brand,” Graeme said. “We will also have finance broker Ruth Williams on hand for our customers. Ruth is very well known and respected throughout the region so it is exciting to provide this ‘one stop shop’ for our buyers. Graeme said Mount Gambier and its surrounds presented a solid property market with affordable prices, facilities and lifestyle, and a number of industries including timber and cattle giving viable employment, underpinned by the low interest rates. “Plentiful water is also a big attraction as it is the lifeblood of any growing community,” he added. Graeme says RE/MAX Limestone Real Estate will be looking for good sales agents

and property managers as he grows the business to match the real estate services the community needs and deserves. “We will give this community our expertise and a level of service that comes from being committed locals, and our community can have confidence it is in good hands with us and the RE/MAX brand,” he said.

When Dave and Gail Liniger cofounded what is now the world’s most successful real estate network in 1973 in Denver, Colorado they established an innovative business plan that put salespeople first rather than the common practice of the business owner controlling every aspect of a salesperson’s job, including finances. The Linigers believed that to attract and retain the best agents, business owners must offer them maximum compensation and advanced support services, along with freedom, choice and the flexibility that they needed; and the master plan strategy, RE/MAX (an acronym for ‘real estate maximums’) succeeded. Their company, with its unique business structure, was nothing short of a global revolution. RE/MAX is the only major real estate network still owned and directed by its original founders. Dave and Gail Liniger are still at the helm of RE/MAX International. RE/MAX Australia is an integral part of the international success and growth of RE/MAX which established itself in a short period of time as the most successful and dominant real estate brand in the world and operating in over 90 countries. Managing Director Michael Davoren, along with co-owners Keith Walker, Franchise Director, and Chris Chapman, Finance Director, acquired the master franchise for RE/MAX Australia. The same team also took over ownership of the RE/MAX New Zealand master franchise. Michael Davoren had more than three decades in real estate before acquiring RE/MAX, with senior management positions and directorships in major real estate groups in Australia and New Zealand. He has also held leadership positions in the industry as President of both the Real Estate Institute of Australia and the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, and served as an Executive Board member of the Chicago-based International Consortium of Real Estate Associations for five years. Today RE/MAX outperforms every other real estate agency business in the world based on volume of sales and many other criteria. RE/MAX is a truly global phenomenon with more than 6,000 offices in more than 90 countries worldwide, and nearly 100,000 agents, who lead the industry in professional designations, experience and production while providing real estate services in areas including residential, commercial, referral, relocation and asset management. OFFERS TO PURCHASE

Every year in November the town of Mount Gambier comes together for the annual Mount Gambier Christmas Parade. This year marks the Christmas Parade’s 55th anniversary and to celebrate the milestone Mount Gambier City Council and the Mount Gambier Library will be putting together a photo display of the parade’s history. The display will be held at The Main Corner on The Kings Floor and will feature people’s personal photos of parades in years gone by. The photos will be hung around the Kings Floor, set up on a projector slide and displayed on touch screens. The Community Collection display will be shown from November 10 to 30 and will not be of cost to the public. You can enter your photos for this display at the Mount Gambier Public Library. From there the photos will be scanned and archived at the Library and originals will be handed back to owners. Staff would prefer digital copies of the photos but originals are accepted. Entries will close on Friday, October 17. The photographs that are being sought after are photos of past parade entries

LOCAL The Abbott Coalition Government will invest $200 million each year to establish a new Australian Apprenticeship Support Network to lift apprenticeship completion rates. The Australian Apprenticeship Support Network will give young Australians the best opportunity to get a job and provide employers with the skilled and productive employees they need to grow their business. Apprentices will be assisted to find an employer to begin their apprenticeship and receive mentoring through to the successful completion of their apprenticeship. Apprentices will be able to access career advice with dedicated support outside their workplace throughout their apprenticeship. The new Australian Apprenticeship Support Network will also undertake community employment outreach by working with employers, industry groups and local chambers of commerce to identify job opportunities and employer skills needs. The new Network will provide a one-stopshop for employers, particularly small business, looking to hire a new apprentice suited to their business. The Government is answering the call of employers, industry groups and feedback from apprentices to improve the current system which has been in place since the 1990s. The current system is largely administrative – processing paperwork for contract sign-ups and administrative compliance for employers, State and Commonwealth departments – without the appropriate support that apprentices and employers need. The true success of the VET sector must be measured in how well it connects skilled workers to real jobs, not how much paperwork is completed. Apprenticeship completion rates are currently around 50 per cent. To lift completion rates the Government is delivering the reforms and support apprentices and employers need.

Aaron Jones is the recipient of the 2014 GTE Ian Giles Memorial Scholarship. Aaron is a first Year Apprentice Motor Mechanic with host employer OG Roberts. Aaron was nominated by his partner Teegan without his knowledge, so being awarded the scholarship came as a big surprise. OGR representative Simon Phillips said Aaron had been excelling on job and this was backed up by Aaron’s lecturers at the Mount Gambier TAFE Campus regarding his trade school studies. Aaron has been undertaking his apprenticeship while supporting Teegan and her son and has said receiving the scholarship has come at a great time. It has helped out with his training costs and has helped to free up money to cover the family’s living expenses. The scholarship is designed to ease the financial burdens associated

with undertaking trade training and can be used for a variety of purposes including assistance with travel costs, tooling, training and more. Ian Giles was a respected colleague and friend at Group Training Employment through his role as operations manager. After he died in 2009, GTE wanted to pay tribute to Ian by offering an annual scholarship in his memory. GTE emphasises the importance of training young people entering in the work force and retaining those skills in the community. This helps businesses grow and provides a vital link in the chain of building skills in our region.

Glenelg Shire’s extensive and popular Cultural Collection has moved a step closer to finding a new permanent home after a positive community response was made for Council’s proposal to use the Drill Hall. Members of the public were recently invited to comment on the proposed future use of the Portland Drill Hall as a storage and display facility for Council’s Cultural Collection, with the three submissions received supporting the proposal and stating that the hall was currently underutilised. Respondents also supported the fact that, by using the facility, a greater proportion for the collection could be displayed at all times and that it would allow for the centralised storage of fragile items. The decision to proceed with the proposed use of the Drill Hall and seek funding to commission concept designs was moved at the council meeting at the end of last month. Cr John Northcott said he was not surprised to see such a positive response to this proposal. “With so much history in our shire, the Cultural Collection is very popular with both locals and visitors to the region. “We want to preserve this asset by ensuring the correct storage environment but also give access to as much of the collection as possible. “This space is ideal in terms or its size, location and lack of current use.” At this stage there is no definitive timeline for implementation of the plan, as there are a number of steps and processes that have to occur before the storage and display facility is established. The next step is to source funding to commission designs for the display and storage infrastructure within the heritage listed Drill Hall.

LOCAL International flavour to Portland exhibition A new exhibition at the Portland Arts Centre features a sculptor from Sydney and an artist from Brisbane. Mexican born artist Maria Garza Castillo has more than 20 years of professional experience in various art forms including graphic design, illustration and photography. Growing up in Mexico Maria started drawing, painting and doing collage from an early age. She was influenced and enriched by her family’s love of art in particular her grandmothers who planted the seed of a love for nature and spirituality. María has a Bachelor of Graphic Design from the Metropolitan Autonomous University; and a Master’s Degree of Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, both in Mexico City. Her work in graphic design, illustration and photography has been published in Mexico for 22 years. It has appeared in more than 60 magazines, books, videos, CDs and other printed and electronic media. In 2006 in Mexico City Garza Castillo met her husband to be Jorge Farré, who had lived in Australia for 16 years by then. They moved together to Sydney and got married in 2007. In 2008 she had her first solo exhibition in Australia at the High Court of Australia in Canberra. Since then María has devoted herself to her personal artwork with the loving support of Jorge. In 2014 the couple moved to Brisbane, where she continues working on her art.

While living in Australia, the artist has had the opportunity to travel to cities and visit many natural places. As she says, ‘Australia brought back my hope in nature’. As she started experiencing life in Sydney she renewed her passion to paint the landscape. When she was able to feel a sense of belonging to this land, she could incorporate the imagery of the Australian nature in to her themes. Technically, the brushstroke has become more defined, and the use of colour bolder. Garza Castillo has not been able to have another solo exhibition in the last years due to chronic pain. This exhibition represents a return to the artistic media, a rebirth. Her present art reflects an intense trajectory as an artist; and it also shares personal insights into the journey through life. Lithuanian born sculptor, Jolanta Janavicius has had 17 one-person shows commencing in 1970 and has participated in fourteen group exhibitions in Australia and overseas. She is a visual artist with her chosen materials being clay, bronze and works on paper. She has travelled extensively throughout Australia. The Australian landscape, animals, birds and colours have been her main inspiration for her work. She also likes to explore the curves of the female body through sculpture often working with different firing techniques including Raku to achieve various results. Her sculpture goddesses show an affinity with ancient Cretan art. As a child she was introduced into a world of fantasy. This world came to an end with the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1944 causing Jolanta and her family to become refugees in Germany. After the war she studied art in Germany at a school under French patronage and some of its students managed to win French Government

scholarships to study art in France. The less lucky ones decided to migrate to other countries. Jolanta and her family migrated to Australia as displaced persons in 1949. She studied at the National Arts School Australia in 1950 and has continued her studies throughout her career. She has also taught ceramics at the Mulawa Women’s Prison for 28 years as well as at the Mosman, Neutral Bay and Lane Cove Arts Centres. Maria and Jolanta became good friends when they both lived in Sydney. The exhibition, Springtime is

Preliminary works have started on Portland’s new helipad with power lines in Bentinck Street being removed. PowerCor is carrying out the work over three days this week. The lines need to be removed to allow for the safe arrival and departure of the emergency helicopter. The works mark the start of the helipad project which is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The helipad is being built between Sea View House and the hospital emergency department and design plans are now being finalised. Apart from removing power lines, the project requires a new parking layout, installation of traffic lights and relocation of whale pots from the Ploughed Field site. PDH has been working on the helipad plan for several years in partnership with the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Committee for Portland. Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation CEO Neil Soullier will be in Portland on September 10 as part of fund-raising plans for the project. The Blue Ribbon foundation has already made a strong financial commitment to the project and will be doing more fundraising in the next few months. Peter Carr from G.R Carr Pty Ltd has been appointed project manager. PDH CEO Chris Giles said it was exciting to see work start on the project. “The helipad will provide a safe and efficient way to evacuate patients in need of urgent lifesaving care outside of Portland,” she said. The helicopter will arrive over the Ploughed Field site and hover across to the hospital at about 100m above Bentinck Street. Traffic lights will be installed at either end of the street and will be activated only when the helicopter is arriving and departing.

Step Up All In - NOW SHOWING All-stars from the previous Step Up instalments come together in glittering Las Vegas, battling for a victory that could define their dreams and their careers.

Mount Gambier households, schools and community groups are invited to join hundreds of thousands of Australians across the country on Saturday, October 25, as part of the rapidly growing national community and sustainability event, Garage Sale Trail. As part of the national day the Mount Gambier Library will be holding a sale of 1,000 preloved books and DVDs. Environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard has welcomed the involvement of council and the unique opportunity Garage Sale Trail provides local residents and organisations in Mount Gambier. In bringing Garage Sale Trail to its local residents the City of Mount Gambier saw an opportunity to deliver a fun, creative and community-driven program for the benefit of residents and local organisations who might want to repurpose their unwanted belongings; live in a more sustainable fashion by reducing waste; connect with their community and raise some money for themselves or others. “The City of Mount Gambier is proud to be supporting Garage Sale Trail in 2014. The campaign offers our community the opportunity to think creatively about how we can reuse items that might otherwise be put out for Council collection and possibly end up in landfill,” Mr Izzard said. “I encourage you to think about those in your community who might benefit from your unwanted items, and likewise what treasures might be out there waiting to be found. “It’s time for the community of Mount Gambier to register their garage sales and join one of the largest community and sustainability events in Australia.” Now in its fourth year, Garage Sale Trail is supported by more than 120 councils nationally and is expecting up to 10,000 garage sales across the country with

Crucial financial support has been given by the Wattle Range Council for a suicide prevention program to be held in Millicent. The funding application by the Millicent Lions Club was supported by council as part of the first round of the 2014/15 Community Financial Assistance Grant program. The Lions Club is co-ordinating the funding for the Menswatch program and Council agreed to contribute $2000 towards it. Funding for the Menswatch program now exceeds $7000 following donations of $4000 from local Leigh Kent and $1000 from the Millicent Medical Clinic. Mayor Peter Gandolfi said the Menswatch is designed to support men them with personal, relationship or mental health issues, raising awareness and taking action to address male suicide and depression in our community. “The community recognition of the need to undertake the Menswatch program has been overwhelming and I thank the community for its support,” he said. “The program is designed to lift the awareness of issues men in the community may be facing and give mates the appropriate information to help each other out.” Flow on effects of the program can also see the empowerment of local men to help each other; prevention of the escalation of mental health issues in the community; a better understanding in the broader community of mental health – essentially reducing the stigma; and overall improvement of the wellbeing of men in the community enabling them to in turn be betterfathers, friends, brothers and sons. “I encourage men of all ages to attend the information evenings as the information gained may save someone’s life,” Mr Gandolfi said. Local Sport Jets secure inaugural rugby title

Naracoorte Jets capped off a perfect season winning the Mount Gambier Rugby League’s 9’s Cup Grand Final against Eastern Dragons 26-10 on Friday night. In front of a decent crowd at East Gambier Football Grounds, the Jets were quick on the scoreboard after some hard-running by Kyme Lewis that set-up Arlen Waihape for a try in the corner. Dragons were quick to retaliate with strong tackles and good defensive efforts that saw no score for 10 minutes of play. An injury to Dragons Jacob McCallum left the side with no subs, but this did not stop their attacking play as Rordan Walker picked the gap in Jet’s defence and scored. A successful conversion by captain Mitch June gave Dragons the lead 6-4. Minutes later, Jets Luke Riley intercepted a pass and sprinted 20 metres and brought the ball within 20 metres of their tryline. This play saw Jets Kyme Lewis involved in another scoring opportunity with an inside-ball setting up Tui Makoare for a try. A successful conversion by Steve Anderson made the score 10-6 Jets way with five minutes remaining. In the dying minutes of the half, Dragons continued their offensive play with an offload from Rordan Walker sending in Dylan Gull to score. An unsuccessful conversion kept the scores locked at 10-all at halftime. Jets came out attacking in the second half with Tony McCarthy scoring after an offload from Kyme Lewis in the opening minute of play. A successful conversion by Makoare gave Jets a 6-point lead. Dragons would not lie down with another 20 metre dash by Rordan Walker setting up his side for a scoring opportunity. The Dragons persevered their try-line, but were unable to score through the Jets defensive wall. In a great display of teamwork, a try-saving tackle out of touch by Dragons Evan Makin was not enough to prevent McCarthy from offloading to Basil Lewis who scored in the corner. Soon after, Basil Lewis scored his second try after side-stepping Dragon’s defenders to cross the try-line. Another successful conversion by Makoare made the score 26-10 Jets way. With 15 minutes remaining, both sides displayed good defence with strong tackles and impenetrable defensive lines. In a last attacking effort, Dragons Makin darted around Jets defenders and sprinted 25 metres, but the game and Premiership was won by the Jets by 16-points. West End Man of the Match was Jets Kyme Lewis who played an attacking and defensive game and assisted in multiple scoring opportunities. Other standout players were Dragons Rordan Walker who scored one try, and Jets Basil Lewis who scored two tries.

Joint Hennessy Medal winners

Two 2014 Brian Hennessy Medal s had to be minted last week with the Western Border Football League’s top individual owner being shared by former winner Richie O’Grady and Casterton Sandford coach Dylan Ayton. The duo tied for the award on 20 votes each, two ahead of tenacious South onballer Brent Howard and North coach Justin McConnell on 17. Classy midfielders Tom Holmes (15) and Simon Berkefeld (13) rounded out the top five. Grady started the season with two best on ground performances and then added to his already healthy tally with three best on ground performances in the month of matches from round 6-9. Ayton matched his effort, snaring votes from round 8-11, which included a trio of three vote performances. In the end it came down to the final round and when Ayton secured two votes, the medal had dual winners. O’Grady won his first Hennessy Medal in his debut season for North Gambier in 2012, while for Ayton, who has been at the helm of the Cats for two seasons, and also represented the league at interleague level, it is his first piece of Western Border silverware. O’Grady was not on hand to accept his second Brian Hennessy Medal - he is in Adelaide desperately seeking a mircale treatment for his serious knee injury in the faint hoipe he can play in the premiership decider this Saturday.

National glory for Pioneers

Led by 2014 Allan Scott Medallist Brad Hill, the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers have brought home the silverware they have been chasing since falling at the last hurdle in 2013 - the SEABL National Championship. Hill added grand final MVP to his impressive resume on a day when the Pioneers outclassed their 2013 South Conference title rivals Nunawading to secure a 14 point victory. Not that the clash was without its dramas after the Pioneers got off to a good start and led by 11 at the main break. The Spectres then turned it on in the third and it was a four point game heading into the last. But this group was not to be denied a second time and the 25-15 final stanza was testament to thier determination to bring home the club’s second national title to go alongside the 2003 breakthrough victory. Hill and Johnson were the stand outs - both picking up 20 points and 11 rebounds, while the general Tom Daly, fresh from the good news last week of being signed by the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL, was back to his best with 19 points and seven assists. As expected, Mitch Creek did the majority of the damage for the Spectres, finishing with 26 points and nine rebounds but it was not to be the Spectres day as the Mount Gambier franchise refused to return home without thew coveted national title.

SUPPLIED & FITTED

FOR ALL YOUR 4X4 NEEDS AND MORE... Sheep and beef farmers in south-west Victoria are being challenged to match their dairy counterparts in producing quality silage. A field day at Coleraine on September 18 hosted by the Western District branch of the Grassland Society of Southern Australia will help producers to make better silage. The field day will cover a range of topics about silage making and its advantages in sheep and beef production systems. Participants will also take a field trip to John and Lachie Tindall’s dairy farm, north east of Casterton to see silage making in action. During the field day that starts at 9.30am at the Coleraine Bowls Club, pasture and fodder conservation specialist Frank Mickan will outline the best methods for making quality silage. Pasture nutritionist Phil White will talk about nutritional and fertiliser requirements for grass to grow and the best species to produce silage, and livestock consultant Graham Lean will discuss the costs associated with making hay and silage. Western District Grassland Society branch president Dr Steve Cotton said that while many dairy farmers were good at making silage, beef and sheep farmers were less successful. Dr Cotton said the field day would be informative and valuable for farmers. People wishing to attend should RSVP to Dr Cotton on 0447 352 321. The field day costs $30 which includes morning tea and lunch.
