COVER BP Nangwarry putting customers first BP Nangwarry has had a makeover – a serious makeover – with the new look set for reveal at the start of next month. It has been a re-vamp from the inside out with new kitchen equipment installed, modern, new storage areas and a comfortable customer service area to make sure their most important asset – their customers – are well looked after. Dean Moore is in the manager’s role and he has built an experienced and friendly team to help him service BP Nangwarry’s customer base. That team includes two qualified chefs so you can expect more than the usual service station fare when you pop in for morning tea, lunch or dinner. BP Nangwarry, which re-opens under its new name, on September 1, will be open seven days a week from 6am to 8.30pm, and much of the new look premises will be about serving amazing coffee. Locally produced Mahalia coffee will be the beans of choice and the staff will all be trained by the Robe based coffee producers so they produce the best possible product. And for the commuter or business person on the road, BP Nangwarry is offering a pre-order service for both coffees and meals so you can just drop in and grab your morning tea, lunch or early morning coffee as soon as you arrive. Just download the mypreorder app, which will have all the BP Nangwarry details and then stay tuned for a new BP Nangwarry specific app that will be available for download or call (08)8739 7080. And it’s not just about what’s happening in store with the amazing food and coffee, BP Nangwarry is also looking to make life easier for those utilising their fuel service. They are in the throes of investigating installing a self serve hi-flow diesel pump for card holders that will be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will be at the northern end in a more convenient location for B-doubles.

Method Place flour, wheatgerm and butter in a food processor. Process until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add 1 egg and chilled water. Process until mixture just comes together and forms a soft dough, adding extra water if necessary. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth. Shape into a disc. Wrap in plastic wrap.

Refrigerate 30 minutes or until firm. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large, deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add onion. Cook for 5 minutes or until softened. Add garlic. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add spinach. Cook for 2 minutes or until wilted. Transfer mixture to a colander over a bowl to strain. Cool for 10 minutes. Place broad beans in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water. Set aside for 30 seconds. Drain. Refresh in a bowl of chilled water. Drain. Peel and discard skins. Preheat oven to 190C/ 170C fan-forced. Roll pastry out between 2 sheets of baking paper until 5mm thick. Line a 4cm-deep, 22cm (top) pie plate with pastry. Trim excess. Pinch edge of pastry to form a decorative pattern. Place spinach mixture in a bowl. Add broad beans, fetta, cheese, dill and lemon rind. Whisk milk and remaining eggs together. Add to broad bean mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined. Spoon mixture into pastry case. Place on a baking tray. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and filling has set. Stand for 10 minutes. Cut into wedges. Serve.

LOCAL

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Changes more than my underwear... by Robbie Tansel I’m not sure I can cope with any more changes. First we get a new Federal parliamentarian, then a new State representative and now we will have a new mayor. I have recently self diagnosed myself as being somewhere on the autism spectrum and I’m pretty sure all this change isn’t good for me. I think my blood sugar level is no good either. That is also self diagnosed. What makes it worse is that I really quite like our current mayor.I can’t say I thought much of our previous Federal or State representatives so I wasn’t that disappointed to see them walk away with their giant superannuation packages. But from what I’ve seen Mr Perryman has genuinely worked hard for Mount Gambier, provided sensible and dignified leadership and achieved things for Mount Gambier. I don’t mean to blow smoke up his rear end but it doesn’t hurt me to be positive every now and then. If any of

the possibilities that have been trotted out so far inspired me a bit I probably wouldn’t be feeling so anxious. I can’t say that any of them have inspired me with much confidence so far. Cliched answers about all the usual issues that apparently will influence our votes. What about some real talk, people? As if there clichéd answers aren’t bad enough, how about the fact that the candidates themselves are so clichéd? All male. All appear to be in the forty to sixty years old range. All successful businessmen and community leaders. All egomaniacs that are a bit full of themselves and their own importance…I mean keen to serve their communities. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a candidate that was a little bit different to the cliché? Why aren’t there female mayoral candidates? Pretty obviously females don’t have massive egos…I mean they don’t care about their community. Selfish cows.

Wine show dinner tickets on sale What about if a couple of teenagers threw their hat in the ring? Wouldn’t that be fun? Wouldn’t their bored expressions be entertaining when being interviewed by journalists? “What do I think about the increase in council rates? Well duh, it’s like WTF. I mean, ewww, like couldn’t we all just, like, ask our dads for money to buy some new stuff and whatever.” Picture the eye rolling. And why does the mayor always have to be a successful person? Wouldn’t it be a laugh to have some no hoper with no real idea or intelligence elected? I might actually give it a go now that I think about it. Do mayors have the power to compel Nestle to bring back Polly Waffles? To be honest I think there may be a Jacqui Lambie or two amongst the nominations so far. The good folk in our local media really need to ask them their opinions on China rather than what they think about future rate increases. I’m probably being a bit unfair because I don’t know any of them that well. In fact I’d like to get to know them a bit better so I could offer my loyal readers a better recommendation. With that in mind I’ll put my customary invitation out for the candidates that I’ll shout them out for a hot chocolate if they email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and we can discuss whether the voice of the voiceless should endorse them. The road to the council chamber goes through Tanselvania.

Entries have closed for the 2014 Limestone Coast Wine Show, with the 14th annual event, hosted by the Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council, running from October 27-31, with organisers predicting that a line-up of exceptional quality wines will be vying for trophies. “A lot of the entries have come in from 2012, and the wines that we are seeing from that vintage have been classical and finely structured with great cellaring potential,” said the Wine Show Committee’s Sarah Pidgeon. “The growing season was average to slightly cooler, creating that nice vibrancy which is the hallmark of the regions here, so we are anticipating some really exciting results from the 2014 event.” The class and trophy structure of the 2013 Wine Show has been retained, however a surge in the popularity of sparkling wine produced from Limestone Coast grapes has prompted organisers to further refine this category. “Last year, we broke the sparkling wines down into four separate exhibition classes, but now we will also be grouping them according to sugar specifications in order to reflect the stylistic variations and make it easier for judges to assess them on a more level playing field,” said Sarah. The Barossa Valley’s Andrew Wigan, who is chief winemaker at Peter Lehmann Wines, will return as chairman of judges for the third year in a row, with the region also welcoming back Beijing wine consultant and educator Fongyee Walker as International Judge. The judging panel will also feature two of Australia’s most respected wine writers, Jane Faulkner and Nick Ryan, and highly decorated winemakers Stuart Watson (Woodlands Wines, WA) and David Morris (Morris Wines, Rutherglen). After spending four days at the Coonawarra Hall tasting up to 500 different drops made from at least 85 per cent of fruit from the Limestone Coast Zone, the panel’s favourite wines will be revealed at a Trophy Presentation Feast at the historic Katnook Woolshed on October 30. “The dinner will be matched with previous Wine Show trophy winners, and is expected to be another sell-out, so we encourage people to purchase their tickets online when they submit their entries, in order to ensure that they don’t miss out,” said Sarah. Details on past winners and tickets to the Trophy Feast can be downloaded at www.limestonecoastwine.com.au.

LOCAL Story time after dark Celebrating National Reading Hour, the Mount Gambier Library held an After Dark Storytime session last week between 6pm and 7pm. National Reading Hour is a way of promoting the joy of reading and that parents should read to their children for an hour a week. Advertising, setting up lights, choosing what books and supplying Milo and cookies for everyone were some of the preparation that went into the event. Children found the event unique and fascinating as they walked into the dark library with their pyjamas on. “The kids’ faces said it all, they all looked so excited,” said library staff member Suzie Hill. The staff allowed the parents and their children to do a tour around the library with torches as their only lights. Around 30 people attended the event with parents and their children. The library staff received a lot of thankyous from the parents. “I think parents liked the event so much because their kids are getting to the age where they have lots of things to do during the day and not so much at night, which is what this event provided” Suzie said. The event brought back the importance of reading and engaging with children. During the first two years of a child’s life, the neurons in pathways of their brains connect and reading can encourage this process. An interest in

libraries or just reading can be a child’s first foundation of learning, which can make school easier for them. The staff at the library have said that they are most certainly going to be throwing another one of their After Dark Storytime nights next year. There will most likely be one in the summer time, as that one was really popular last time they held it. They also provide a Babybounce session for 0-2 year olds at the kids cave in the library from 10am-10.20am on Tuesdays and Fridays. This session encourages singing, reading and face to face play between parents and their babies. Another session they provide is Storytime for the age group of 2-5 year olds. This event is held on Tuesdays and Fridays as well from 10.30am-11.30am. These

LOCAL Technology gurus in the spotlight The Mount Gambier Library was chosen as the first regional location to host the Unleashed Open Data Competition – part of the National GovHack Competition which was held simultaneously across the country one weekend last month. Unleashed provides an opportunity for web and application developers, open data & visualisation gurus, journalists, graphic designers, researchers, and anyone interested in playing with data to come together over a single weekend. Teams work together to create new mashups, data visualisations and apps with open data from government, research and industry. The concepts on promoting the data to the public do not have to be a fully functioning or completed website or application – just a great idea needs to be formed with teams promoting their idea via a three minute recording which was then uploaded by the Sunday deadline. Judges across the state watched these videos and choose winners across various categories. Earlier this month the Mount Gambier Library hosted the local Unleashed Open Data Competition Awards Night followed by a live stream connection for the South Australian Unleashed Awards which all of our competitors were again in the running for. The Mount Gambier Unleashed Open Data Competition & Mount Gambier Youth Unleashed Award went to Trent

LOCAL Local dairy farmers from Western Victoria are embracing social media as an important communication tool following an exclusive workshop held in Terang last week. The Legendairy workshop which was run by DairySA aimed at giving dairy farmers an introduction into the benefits of social media and the opportunities it presents for them both personally and for their business. The workshop was the second in a series that will reach every dairy region in Australia. Increasingly social media is an integral part of modern day communication, and for dairy farmers it can offer a platform for sharing, communicating and connecting with both consumers and other farmers. DairySA Communications Coordinator and workshop presenter, Louise Stock, said many farmers are using platforms such as Facebook and Twitter however a lot do not know the full potential of how beneficial these sites can be. “Our workshops provide an introduction to Facebook and Twitter as well as highlight the power social media has to engage broad audiences,” she said. “We’ve been really impressed to find a lot of farmers are active on social media and are using it to give others an insight into their daily lives. However, the key is to understand the benefits of social media as a tool for communicating with the community and the wider industry. “Social media can complement other communication tools, such as driving traffic to a website, but most importantly, it can help reach a much wider network.” The Legendairy communications initiative celebrates the dairy industry as a whole, placing particular emphasis on telling the inspirational stories of the people behind the product.

ADVERTORIAL I Kevin Paisley Fashion Eyewear Cataracts in the spotlight CATARACTS - A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and are still the principal cause of blindness in the world. There are more cases of cataracts worldwide than there are of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy combined Cataracts start out small and at first has little effect on your vision. You may notice that your vision is blurred a little, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass or viewing an impressionist painting. They may make light from the sun or a lamp seem scattered or you may notice when you drive at night that the oncoming headlights cause more glare than before. Colours may also not appear as bright as they once did. What Causes Cataracts? - The lens inside the eye works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina for clear vision. It also adjusts the eye’s focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away. The lens is mostly made of water and protein but as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see. No one knows for sure why the eye’s lens changes as we age, forming cataracts. But researchers worldwide have identified factors that may cause cataracts or are associated with cataract development. Besides advancing age, cataract risk factors include:• Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight and other sources • Diabetes • Hypertension • Obesity • Smoking • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications • Statin medicines used to reduce cholesterol• Previous eye injury or inflammation • Previous eye surgery • Hormone replacement therapy •

Significant alcohol consumption • High myopia • Family history. One theory of cataract formation that’s gaining favour is that many cataracts are caused by oxidative changes in the human lens. This is supported by nutritional studies that show fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants may help prevent certain types of cataracts Cataract Prevention - Though there is significant controversy about whether cataracts can be prevented, a number of studies suggest certain nutrients and nutritional supplements may reduce your risk of cataracts. One large, 10-year study of female health professionals found higher dietary intakes of vitamin E and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin from food and supplements were associated with significantly decreased risks of cataract. Other studies have shown antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids may reduce cataract risk. Another step you can take to reduce your risk of cataracts is to wear protective sunglasses that block 100 percent of the sun’s UV rays when you are outdoors. Cataract Treatment - When symptoms begin to appear, you may be able to improve your vision for a while using new glasses. However in the long term most people will need cataract surgery to restore their vision. In fact, it is the most frequently performed eye surgery in the world. Nine out of 10 people who have cataract surgery regain very good vision. During surgery, the surgeon will remove your clouded lens and in most cases replace it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL). New IOLs are being developed all the time to make the surgery less complicated for surgeons and the lenses more helpful to patients.

LOCAL Local songstress headlines music program Performing with some of her students at the most recent Portland 5@5 series, local songstress Melissa Francis is becoming renowned as much for her love of developing young talent as she is for her own musical skill. While she has been teaching privately since December, after she was contacted by several students wishing to improve their performance techniques, it was through Glenelg Shire Council’s ‘Ripple Effect’ that she began to realise that she had a talent for teaching. She has just started her second term with the councilcoordinated music program and is looking forward to what the future brings for the local music scene. “My student base is growing continually,” she said. “My mantra when teaching is that singing should be primarily fun, while simultaneously a pursuit of excellence. Strive to do better at what you love!” And, from studying piano as a three-year old, to music theory at Yamaha Music School in Malvern, Melbourne - achieving Distinctions in AMEB level 7 pianoforte, and High Distinctions in level 6 AMEB Musical Theory – there is little wonder Ripple Effect organisers are excited to have the local mother on board. “I have always loved to sing - in addition to 14 years of musical study and examinations, in my teenage years, I gained performing experience both as a solo and choral singer,” she said. “In 2008, I arrived in Portland and quickly rekindled an interest in the local music scene, and began writing music again with my husband, local rock frontman Aaron Francis, developing a style that can be

described as an ‘edgy blend of folk, blues and gospel’. “I performed regularly between 20082011 at Roving Ear, the Upwelling Festival, GoraeFest, open mic nights and local Portland churches, and in 2011 I worked with Portland hard rock band The Lost Royals on their album ‘Dark Horse’, featuring on the track ‘Time and Tide’, and performing live at the album launch at the ‘Macs Hotel’. “In 2012 I was invited by producer Ian Bail to collaborate with international artist Frances Phipps and provide vocal backing for her album ‘Gypsy Girl’, featuring on the track ‘Shelter Me’. “During this time I also worked with local electro-composer Brenton Hamono, featuring in the ambient house track ‘Heartbreak’.” The Ripple Effect is a FREE all abilities singing program for young people aged 12-25 who love to sing. It has been funded through the Victoria Government’s Engage!, program, which supports young people, aged 12 to 25 years, in becoming involved in all aspects of community life, from volunteering and mentoring programs, to projects that will increase real-life skills and connect young people to further education, training or careers. Term Three started on Wednesday 16 July 2014, but performers and supporters are encouraged to join in. • Wednesdays 5:00pm-6.30pm • Orchard Rise Creative Arts Studio (15 Tyers St Portland) • Afternoon tea provided For more information about Ripple Effect contact Hayley Dunning on hdunning@glenelg.vic.gov.au.

Ex Libris Book Fair September 5-7 - Port Fairy Visit Port Fairy for the book fair, workshops and author talks. Here is a huge antiquarian and second-hand book sale, literary sessions with local and visiting writers and poetry readings over coffee and cake.

Portland’s pledge to reduce childhood obesity has proved to be a message reaching all corners of the local community, with followers of the newly created SEA Change Portland (Sustainable Eating and Activity Change) Facebook page jumping dramatically in its first 24 hours of publication. More than 200 people almost instantly jumped on board the social media site, after the page went public earlier this month - liking the page and spreading the word about what is hoped will create a lifestyle change in the south west Victorian town. It is still growing steadily. The Facebook page is also linked to a new SEA Change Portland website, which will also provide a valuable tool in getting key messages of the new Deakin University-supported approach out to as many people as possible. The creation of a Facebook page and website was the next step following two well attended workshops, in which community leaders developed a plan of action and made firm commitments about what they could do to change the way we all approach our lifestyles. The 45 people who attended the second workshop on July 29 talked about what was needed going forward, including resources, policy change and community leader involvement, in groups that reflected where their interests lie, being schools, business/clubs, local government, service providers and early childhood. Commitments for action included incorporating ‘green foods’ (using the traffic light system) into an upcoming school fete, furthering the discussion with others within clubs, advocating for food kiosk menu changes within local sporting club, using skills to provide healthy eating and activity information to media and incorporating healthy eating options and free water

into local events. Staff from four local organisations have been working behind the scenes to support the community momentum, including Clinton Thomas of Southern Grampians Glenelg PCP, who was responsible for creating both the Facebook page and website and said this early response was a reflection of what was to come. “The key message from the workshops was that we need to make healthy eating and physical activity both fun and normal for children - it’s important to have an environment that supports making healthy choices the easy choices,” he said. “We all agreed that the approach we are taking requires three elements, community ownership, momentum and regular feedback of what is working and what isn’t. Social media and the website blog we have set up will be invaluable for the work and the changes Portland is making. We can see that people in Portland really want to see this positive change. There is so much that we can do when we work together and when you see the response of those who have been involved in SEA Change Portland so far you can feel the positive energy from everyone. I can only see the messages getting stronger and other communities looking to us for advice about how they can make similar changes. World Health Organisation (WHO) Co-Director Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University Dr Steven Allender supported Portland as the trial location for the new approach to obesity reduction and has visited Portland four times with five other obesity experts to assist with the approach. For details about how you can become involved visit the SEA Change Portland Facebook page, Twitter @SEAChangePort or website http: //seachangeportland.com.au/.

LOCAL Glenelg Shire’s vision for a healthier environment, zero waste and better recycling facilities is a step closer, with access to the Nelson Landfill changing to match other Shire waste management facilities - the first in a series of steps towards becoming a transfer station. Access to the Nelson Landfill can be made via a key available at the Nelson Visitor Information Centre (VIC), with a $50 refundable deposit required when the key is issued. Since 1 August, people have also not been able to access the site at all hours of the day. It is scheduled that the new transfer station infrastructure will be in place towards the end of 2014 or early 2015, with the site layout finalised, building permit approvals sought and preliminary soil tests undertaken. Once planning approvals have been obtained work will begin on the detailed design of the infrastructure required for the facility. Mayor Cr John Northcott said commercial businesses would be able to join the Council supplied kerbside collection service if the new access requirements didn’t meet their requirements. “Only approved items for disposal may be left at the landfill and load sizes will also be restricted to three cubic metres or less,” he said. “While Council understands that these arrangements may not meet the needs of all businesses and residents in the community, to date the Nelson community has received waste disposal arrangements which are not available to any other business or community within the shire. “Another alternative for businesses would be to engage a commercial waste collection company to collect their waste.” For further details, contact council’s Local Laws Department on (03)5522 2200.

Words and Pictures - NOW SHOWING An art instructor and an English teacher form a rivalry that ends up with a competition at their school in which students decide whether words or pictures are more important.

Mount Gambier High School’s Open Girls Basketball team has returned from Adelaide as the SSSSA State KnockOut champions. The talented line-up defeated Cabra in a tense final, 47-41. The first game the girls played was against Trinity College. The girls knew this game would be a challenge given one of Trinity’s players was a junior Australian representative. Teagan Gray’s intensity set the tone of the game, which was supported by Jasmine Disselbach’s solid defence and rebounding. This helped the girls to limit the impact of Trinity’s key player and win 41-31. Henley High School was the girl’s next opponent. Some accurate outside shooting from Tenille and Casey Horrigan, as well as smart decision making and positioning in offence from Sara Smith, allowed the girls to hold the lead all game and eventually win comfortably by 22 points. Mount Gambier’s final game of the minor round was against Sacred Heart College. Danika Jolley and Rachael Hines’ cool heads in the back court, as well as the team’s ability to provide targets to pass to allow the girls to break the full court trap employed by Sacred Heart to create scores of their own. The final score saw the girls win 27-24. Despite winning all minor round games, Mount Gambier High School finished second overall by percentage, meaning they had to face third placed Sacred Heart College in the semi final. Sacred Heart again played a physical game and shot accurately from the threepoint line early. This saw the girls fall behind by eight points at half time. Some outstanding offensive and defensive rebounding by Ebony McDiarmid in the second half, along with the team’s ability to stick to their game plan, allowed them to slowly but surely reduce the

lifestyle1.net | 28

margin and eventually take the lead late in the second half. They ended up winning 37-31. The grand final saw the girls face specialist basketball school, Cabra Dominican College. The first half was tight as each team traded baskets and the scores were even at half time. In the second half the girls were able to effectively break Cabra’s full court trap and score numerous fast breaks to put them up by 10 points. Characteristically, Cabra didn’t give up and increased their intensity to take the lead by one point with two minutes left in the last quarter. Fortunately, Tenille was fouled on a three point shot to give her three foul shots and the girls rallied to win by six points. Coach Sara Chapple said the teamwork, intensity, heart and persistence showed, particularly when their backs were against the wall, made this team very worthy winners of the Open Knock-Out State Champion title. “The school is very proud of the contributions provided by all team members on the day, as KnockOut competitions, (which involve playing five games in one day), are rarely won without input from all team members,” she said.

Two Colour Harmony – Hamilton Quilters From September 8 HAMILTON ART GALLERY, HAMILTON The Hamilton Quilters have been delighting Western Victoria with their dedication, skill and creativity with this popular medium for more than 30 years.

Not many local tradies get the chance to showcase their workmanship on national television and for Mount Gambier cabinet maker Mick McLean it was an opportunity he just couldn’t turn down. The cabinet maker of 21 years happily downed tools at his Mount Gambier business Cabinets by Michael, packed his work van and travelled to Melbourne to work on popular Channel 9 renovation show “The Block Glasshouse” during April. Mr McLean joined former workmate and local man Mark Weedon who now runs Marben Kitchens and Benchtops at Fern Tree Gully, to fit kitchen cabinetry for contestants Michael and Carlene, and Max and Karstan. Mr McLean said the job was high pressure as a result of extremely tight timeframes. “All the kitchens were constructed and then delivered, based on measurements taken before the walls of the apartments were even in place,” he said. “Inevitably, we had to make changes along the way to make things suit as the plans and measurements changed, but there was no time for mistakes - the job just had to be done before room delivery.” Mr McLean said the jobsite was by far the busiest he has worked on. “It was like five construction sites in one, with about 100 people on site every day,” he said. “We were working around stonemasons, tilers, floor finishers, electricians, plumbers and plasterers, fighting for space to get in there and get the job done.” Mr McLean said the unique working opportunity had given him fresh inspiration and he is now busy pouring this into his own unique Margaret Street kitchen showroom.

“It’s been great to see new modern designs, colour schemes and appliances and bring these ideas back to Mount Gambier,” he said. And despite working 37 hours over 2.5 days during his time on The Block and arriving home to Mount Gambier utterly exhausted, Mr McLean said plans were already in place for him to work on the show’s next series where it is believed pre-construction is already underway. *You can check out Mr McLean’s handiwork in Michael and Carlene and Max and Karstan’s apartments when The Block “kitchen week” airs on Channel 9 .

The story of two men - a killer awaiting trial, and a troubled young deputy - sitting across from each other in the dark, talking through the bars of a county jail cell. John Gload, so brutally adept at his craft that only now, at the age of 71, has he faced the prospect of long-term incarceration; and Valentine Millimaki, low man in the Copper County sheriff’s department, who draws the overnight shift after Gload’s arrest, tasked with getting the killer to talk about a string of unsolved murders. With a disintegrating marriage now further collapsing under the strain of his night duty, and his safety threatened from within his own department, Millimaki finds himself seeking counsel from a remorseless criminal. The strange intimacy of their connection takes a startling turn with a brazen act of violence, a manhunt, and a stunning revelation that leave Gload’s past and Millimaki’s future forever entwined.

Seeming that the cost of getting trucks to deliver the cattle to Tom’s property cost around the same as what it would to walk there, he decided to drove the cattle over two states, covering 2000km. Al Mabin chose to join the drove for five months and she has now made a extraordinary photographic book about the journey. The book is about the big cattle drive conducted by Tom Brinkworth and is targeted at anyone in the farming industry or anyone who loves looking at beautiful

Following the successes of previous RFDS Golf Days, the Mount Gambier Support Team is again organising its annual Golf Day. The event in 2014 is to be held at the Attamurra Golf Course on Sunday. September 14, with a 10am meet for the 10.30am start. There will be an all-day barbecue, drinks trolleys on the course, and afternoon tea, with the cost just $25 per person. The competition will be in the form of an Ambrose 4-ball competition and only one person in a team of four needs to be a golfer. Teams can be entered in the men’s, women’s or mixed categories. Teams can be entered by ringing the Mount Gambier Golf Club on (08)8725 7739 Mt Gambier RFDS Support Group president Chris Driscoll said that local businesses were rallying behind the golf day with sponsorship. All money raised goes directly towards the costs of purchasing and outfitting the RFDS planes. The golf day is one of the major annual fundraisers for the Support Group in Mount Gambier, which last year raised more than $65,000. The RFDS supplies a vital service in the urgent transportation of patients to metropolitan hospitals for a higher level of care, and many accident victims owe their lives to the RFDS service. The RFDS has landed more than 220 times in the State’s South East during the first quarter of 2014, so it is important the community continues to support the event as it has done so generously in the past.

New generation of Tigers stars to be put through paces

Tenison secures State netball title Tenison Woods College Year 8/9 Knockout Netball team has returned from Adelaide as the State champions. After dominating the round robin section of the regional section of the competition, the Tenison girls had a tough semi final against Mount Gambier High before defeating Bordertown in the grand final to earn the Adelaide finals spot. Missing State goal shooter Mary Wilson for the Adelaide competition, the Tenison girls dug deep for some tough early round contests including a narrow victory over Marymount College and a tough draw with Cornerstone - the team the Tenison girls eventually defeated in te title decider by a convincing 28 goals.

Four promising North Gambier junior footballers will be given exposure to elite training and education thanks to a past player initiative. A trust set up by a group of investors will finance a two day camp this September at the Melbourne-based Draftstar. With senior football exposure already under their belts, Under 17 stars Brad Close and Josh Jenner will join Under 15 talents Nicholas Brown and Mitchell Whan at the residential camp held at Assumption College, in Kilmore. Draftstar is the brainchild of former Hawthorn forward Ben Dixon, Hawthorn premiership player and Melbourne ruckman Robbie Campbell, and fitness guru Dan Condon. The program aims to put players through training and education to show how to prepare to be an elite footballer. North Junior Football Committee President Jonathon Bruhn said the investment in the Tigers’ young guns was hugely appreciated. “Several past players have invested significant amounts of money with the aim of promoting Junior Football at

North to ensure we provide an environment to attract people to come to the club,” Bruhn said. “The trustees have asked the committee to find a way to spend the money earned from interest to fulfil these goals.” Bruhn said the junior committee conducted extensive research as to how the money could be best spent, leading them to Draftstar. “Our selection criteria was based around not just being a good player but also a positive role model for their peers by training and playing hard and fairly,” he said. “We also took into account the players who support club activities, are prepared to get the maximum out of their ability, and will strive hard to improve themselves.” Bruhn said the club hoped the new initiative would give young footballers something to aspire to.

Keeping it in the family Twins Jonte and Keely Lunsmann (pictured) have been playing club hockey in Mount Gambier since the age of seven and both are now State representatives as their respective hockey careers gain momentum. Jonte has been awarded the best and fairest for the Lower South East Hockey Association in his junior grades on two occasions and Keely has been runner up best and fairest once. Both had been desperate to earn a State call-up and fittingly, they have done it in the same year, playing at separate national championships earlier this month. Keely was selected to represent South Australia in the Open Country Women’s team with the National Championships played in Toowoomba from August 1-9, in a team with four other Lower South East hockey representatives. The women’s team travelled to the Gold Coast for a week prior to the championship with trial matches being played against NSW development squads at Murwillumbah. The SA team finished fifth with Keely scoring one goal. Jonte trialled for the South Australian Secondary School Boys team but unfortunately narrowly missed out on selection but within two weeks he was contacted by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and asked if he would consider nominating and playing for

another State as an import. He jumped at the opportunity, he didn’t care what state he played for, he just wanted to play hockey. Jonte did not have far to travel, with the National 16 & under School Sports Australia championships being held in Adelaide from August 9-16. The ACT team finished seventh.

Johnson 6) d NORTH WEST TASMANIA 75 The Pioneers have earned a home final for the South Conference title decider with an eight point victory over North West Tasmania. It is the second successive season the Mount Gambier franchise has hosted the South Conference grand final. It was a come from behind victory by the home side, with the Tasmanian team getting off to a flyer to lead by eight points at the first change. It was a critical start from the visitors who needed to silence the parochial crowd as early as possible. The Thunder shot the lights out in that opening stanza, making 13 from 20 from the field and hitting three of five three point attempts. Things couldn’t have gone more differently in the second though as the Pioneers upped the intensity and powered to a one point lead at the main break. The Thunder’s radar basically broke in the second, hitting five from 19 from the floor and none of their six three point attempts. The Thunder rallied again though to enjoy a one point lead going into the last but it was all the home side. Shooting 50 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc, the Pioneers put together an impressive 24-15 final stanza to clinch the home court advantage for the grand final. The Thunder tried to shoot their way out of trouble from three point territory but shot only one from nine attempts. North West Tasmania now host Kilsyth for the right to challenge the Pioneers for the South Conference title.

MOTOR Despite pump prices increasing in the past 12 months, RAA wants to reassure regional motorists that local retailers have been playing fairer than a year ago. In 2012/13 RAA put regional fuel providers on notice after an RAA survey found creeping regional fuel margins had reaped an extra $3.74m from country motorists that year. RAA Senior Analyst Chris West said the monthly regional fuel ratings produced by RAA had brought margins back in line with industry standards.“In 2012/13 we saw significant periods where the regional fuel industry was passing on wholesale price increases within a week, but when prices were falling, the full savings weren’t passed on to motorists at all,” said Mr West. “In the past 12 months, we’ve seen a complete turnaround for most towns. We’ve now got a situation where the majority of regional fuel retailers are following the wholesale price curve more consistently, which means motorists are paying fairer prices more often. “Most regional retailers are passing on the savings at a similar rate as when they pass on wholesale price rises.” Keith was the star performer across 2013/14, holding the top spot for six months consecutively, achieving an overall rating of 3.2 for the year. While Coober Pedy consistently placed at the bottom of the table, they have showed some improvement across the year. The town that made the greatest improvement was Port Augusta, moving from last place to second. RAA will continue to monitor the activity of regional fuel retailers across South Australian in the coming year. “We’ve been encouraged to see regional fuel retailers lift their game at the pump, providing motorists with a much fairer price,” said Mr West. “What we want to see moving forward is regional fuel retailers maintaining this positive behaviour.”

MOTOR Building on Henry’s vision Building on Henry Ford’s vision of opening the highways to all mankind, Ford today is demonstrating advanced technologies that are making its vehicles smarter, safer and more sustainable than ever before. Ford is showcasing vehicles designed to improve road safety for all, help reduce accidents in our cities, go further on a tank of fuel and reduce harmful emissions – all positive steps forward for drivers and passengers across Asia Pacific. Ford’s Innovations for Millions event showcases advanced technologies and affordable, class-leading safety features. The world’s first Rear Inflatable Seatbelt is on show, alongside Ford’s Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Alert, and Active City Stop. Innovative driver awareness tools like the Drink Driving Suit will be demonstrated, as well as cutting-edge features such as Active Park Assist. Ford’s line-up of high-tech EcoBoost engines, multi-material lightweight vehicle components and the latest generation of Ford’s in-car connectivity system, SYNC, are also on show. The Innovation for Millions event features demonstrations at Ford’s Australian Proving Ground, where engineers put Ford vehicles through their paces to ensure they meet the highest quality standards, as well as interactive events in the newly upgraded Ford immersive Virtual Environment (FiVE) lab in Melbourne. The FiVE lab allows engineers and designers to collaborate in real time with other Ford teams worldwide. The new lab is big enough for a virtual walk-around of Ford’s largest vehicles, giving designers and engineers the chance to experience in-development cars much like a consumer would on the showroom floor. Ford has virtualreality facilities in the United States,

Germany, China, India, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. These centres are part of Ford’s virtual engineering processes that utilise immersive environments and advanced computer-aided engineering to accurately model everything from the whole vehicle to minute details before building prototypes. This virtual modelling impacts everything from aerodynamics to safety and aspects of the human-machine interface, and allows designers and engineers to optimise systems and components far earlier in the development process – resulting in prototype vehicles that are much closer to a finished product. Smart technologies Ford is also focusing its technological innovations in areas consumers can fully experience themselves, offering smart technologies that help make urban driving more convenient. On display at Innovation for Millions is Ford’s Enhanced Active Park Assist, which enables hands-free parking in both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. The system scans for suitable spots, and when a parking space is found it will take care of all the steering – requiring only shifting, acceleration and brake input from the driver. Ford’s Active City Stop is designed to help urban drivers avoid low-speed collisions. Using a forward-facing infrared sensor, the system regularly monitors conditions and applies the brakes when the sensor detects that a crash is likely. The system operates at speeds below 30 km/h and reduces the risk of low-speed crashes into the rear of another vehicle. It may also help to reduce impact damage or potentially avoid the crash completely. Going further, Enhanced Active City Stop is the next generation of this technology, which enables automatic emergency

braking up to speeds of 50km/h and will be available to customers shortly. Enhanced Active City Stop is part of Ford’s work to deliver a more advanced braking system, which may enhance the safety of our cities and roads. In addition sensorbased technologies, Ford demonstrated the latest generation of Ford’s SYNC in-car connectivity system, which now benefits from an eight-inch colour touchscreen. SYNC 2 boasts an array of updated and new features, with increased voice recognition capabilities that can help drivers stay connected while keeping their eyes on the road. Feeling famished? Tell SYNC “I’m hungry”, and the system will search for nearby restaurants. This is just one of SYNC’s many customerfriendly features. Other features on show at Innovation or Millions include Ford’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross-Traffic Alert, which helps detect vehicles in a driver’s blind spots, giving peace of mind on the road and when parking. BLIS® is a radar-based system that identifies when there are other vehicles in a driver’s blind spot and alerts the driver using indicator lights and audio alerts. Cross-Traffic Alert, working in tandem with BLIS®, scans 20 metres in each direction – the equivalent of seven parking spaces – in order to warn drivers of approaching

vehicles when backing out of a parking spot. All these smart features aim to help increase driver awareness and convenience. Ford is also showcasing its innovative “Drink Driving Suit”, a special tool Ford developed to demonstrate how much more difficult driving becomes after drinking alcohol. Consisting of tunnel-vision glasses; ear muffs, wrist and ankle weights; and padding to elbows, neck, and knees, the “Drink Driving Suit” makes even simple tasks – such as walking a straight line – much harder. The suit is used in safety and educational programs supported by Ford around the world to help educate consumers about the importance of remaining fully aware while driving. The suit is a reminder of what can happen when visibility, hearing, coordination and balance are impaired.
