COVER Take charge of your future Mount Gambier High School graduate Elouise Dukalskis is returning home this week, representing Flinders University at the Limestone Coast Rotary Careers Expo on Friday. With SATAC applications opening on Monday, the time has come for Limestone Coast students to start seriously investigating their tertiary study options and Elouise certainly recommends that students and their parents do as much research as possible to find the best fit for their future career options. The locally based careers expo is a pre-cursor to the Flinders University Open Days, which give an even greater insight into life at the Adelaide based university, and Elouise says while she bypassed that opportunity, she was completely lost when she officially started her Bachelor of Business at Flinders University

and in hindsight wishes she had availed herself of the opportunity. “I turned up on the first day and there was 25,000 students, the same number of people that lived in Mount Gambier, and I just lost the plot,” Elouise said. “I think it’s smart to do your due diligence, particularly if you’re coming from away.” Limestone Coast students will have plenty of opportunities to touch base with Elouise, who is a Prospective Student Advisor at Flinders University, as she is doing school visits on Thursday ahead of Friday’s careers expo, where you can make an appointment to see her and start finding out about your possible pathways to life at Flinders University. “It’s a chance to learn about the courses on offer and get advice on preferencing and things like that,” Elouise said. She also can let you know about scholarship opportunities and other issues that affect regional students that she understands, having come from this region herself. “Coming from this region I feel I can make what I have to say more relevant because I know the issues that face students coming from here,” she said. Elouise also has her own story to tell. After graduating from Mount Gambier High School she did a gap year at the Mount Gambier Hospital while concurrently completing a Diploma of Management before using her ATAR to be accepted into Flinders University’s Bachelor of Business. “There was a combination of factors for me choosing Flinders,” she said. “I was in the first intake of an advanced leadership stream in the Bachelor of Business, a new course in 2012, and it was a great opportunity. I also loved the layout of the university, it’s such a beautiful green campus. It seemed to have a better culture than other universities and I also had scholarship opportunities.” The now 21 year old said making the effort to attend the

Flinders University Open Days on August 15 & 16, running from 9.30-4pm, is incredibly beneficial. “There are heaps of students on campus, we really involve students in the open days and they run tours around the campus,” Elouise said. “With 160 hectares, there’s a lot to see.” The value of having the students at the front line also means prospective students can chat informally and get some personal advice. The admissions staff are all on hand during the open days to advise on entry pathways, as well as the faculty staff – the staff that are not only teaching the diverse range of courses, but that actually wrote the courses as well. Catch up with Elouise at Friday’s Rotary Careers Expo at Tafe SA between 9am and 2.30pm or head to the Flinders University Open Days on August 15 & 16 with Fresh 92.7 broadcasting live on both days.

Toss to combine - the heat from the pasta will cook the egg slightly and form a creamy sauce. Serve immediately with extra parmesan.

And So It Goes - From August 7 There are a million reasons not to like realtor Oren Little (Michael Douglas), and that’s just the way he likes it. Willfully obnoxious to anyone who might cross his path, he wants nothing more than to sell one last house and retire in peace and quiet -- until his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he never knew existed and turns his life upside-down. Enter his neighbour (played by Diane Keaton) & so the drama begins.

BOOKS OF THE WEEK Paris Letters Janice McLeod

Finding love and freedom in a pen, a paintbrush and Paris. How much money does it take to quit your job? Disillusioned with corporate life and on the verge of burnout, Janice MacLeod is surprised when the answer isn’t as daunting as she expected. With a little maths and a lot of determination, Janice cuts back, saves up and buys herself two years of freedom in Europe. After a few weeks in Paris, Janice meets Christophe, a cute butcher who doesn’t speak English. Through a combination of sign language and ‘franglais’, they embark on a whirlwind romance, before wanderlust pushes her to continue her travels. But his Daniel Craig good looks and big heart draw her back to Paris. Making the decision to stay, Janice finally has an opportunity to embrace her desire to become an artist, establishing a painted letter subscription service. Now, she sends out hundreds of letters every year to others who crave something personal and beautiful. PARIS LETTERS is the inspiring story of a woman who dared to break out and discover a way of living that was richer, more fulfilling and full of love. Humans of New York Brandon Stanton Now an instant #1 New York Times bestseller, Humans of New York began in the summer of 2010, when photographer Brandon Stanton set out to create a photographic census of New York City. Armed with his camera, he began crisscrossing the city, covering thousands of miles on foot, all in an attempt to capture New Yorkers and their stories. The result of these efforts was a vibrant blog he called “Humans of New York,” in which his photos were featured alongside quotes and anecdotes.

LOCAL A priceless gift for people in need In 2012 Bonnie Stewart established the non-profit organisation “With Love & Lipstick” to raise awareness about violence against women and to give a voice to women suffering in an abusive relationship. Last year the campaign was launched in the South East and more than 150 boxes of love were distributed to the women and children who are supported by the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service. The campaign will start tomorrow and will run through until November 25, which is White Ribbon Day. In Australia 1 in 3 women will experience some form of violence in their lifetime, it is time to break the silence. Last year the campaign received an overwhelming response from the local community and hopefully we can reach the same quantity of generous donations by November. Organisers are hoping people in the community will make a

box of love, filled with the items listed below and donate it to the Mount Gambier Public Library, National Tiles, Decor House or K&S Fuels Jubilee Highway. Women – Body wash; hairbrush; lip gloss; nail polish; perfume; moisturiser; fiction book; moisturiser; hand cream; manicure set; hairspray; shampoo; hand sanitiser; conditioner; bobby pins; hair ties; make up wipes; deodorant; shower cap; head band; hair clips; make up; toothpaste; notebook; toothbrush; pen. Children (boy or girl) – Lunchbox; puzzle; pens; pencils; chalk; crayons; drawing pad; stickers; bubbles; skipping rope; bouncy ball; toothpaste; toothbrush; colouring book; fiction book; hairbrush.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK The Hundred-Foot Journey - From August 14 In The Hundred-Foot Journey, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France to open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. He gets a frosty reception from the proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP...? Education, training & employment in focus ADVERTORIAL I UniSA Hannah builds the foundations of a new career Growing up Hannah Wilson had decided in terms of career, what was good enough for her mother was good enough for her. “Mum had been working in satisfying and dependable administrative roles all of her career and loved it and because I had similar strengths, I thought I would follow in her footsteps,” Hannah said. “I had my career all worked out.” But seven years on from high school, Hannah has a whole new outlook and a new career path under development. “I completed a Certificate III in Business studies and took on an administrative job but the experience was not what I thought it would be and I didn’t enjoy it,” she said. “Being uncomfortable in the job spurred me on to really think about my career and I realised I wanted to study for a profession – I wanted to be a teacher.” With support and advice from the University of South Australia, Hannah (pictured) enrolled in Foundation Studies, a one year program designed to prepare students for full degree studies at university. “It was a fantastic course because it equipped me with all the skills I would need to start a degree – how to write and reference, how to access resources, how to think critically and what was expected with assignments and projects,” Hannah said. “It taught me how to ‘be’ at university.” But what has made the dream a reality for Hannah is the opening of the Bachelor of Education at UniSA’s Mt Gambier campus. Still located some 50km from the campus at Millicent, Hannah said she need only attend two study contact days for tutorials a week and she completes much of her work through online contact with lecturers. “I would never say this was the easiest way to do your degree because I have struggled at times, but the fact is there were no options for me to move to the city to study, so this opportunity is very important,” she said. In just the

first year of the degree, Hannah has already had inschool placements including one day a week for five weeks and a full week block in a local classroom. “The experience of being in a school has just confirmed this is what I want to do and it continues to motivate me to work hard,” she said. “I am looking forward to the opening of the new campus in Mount Gambier because I think it will improve the experience of university for regional students. “But most of all I am looking forward to graduating and being able to take on a teaching role in the region where I live.”

McDonald’s is so much more than a place for teenagers to earn some extra pocket money while still at school, it is one of Australia’s biggest employers, creating future leaders with world-class training, flexible hours and nationally recognised qualifications. McDonald’s training sets people up not just to further their careers within the fast food company, either in store or in a behind the scenes office role, but also provides an outstanding foundation for any career pathway. McDonald’s boasts a strong support network, catering for the needs of the new employee experiencing the workforce for the first time, right through to employees looking to advance their careers right through to franchisee. Working as a crew member at Mc Donald’s offers training and experience across a wide range of skills that can set you up for any number of career pathways, including outside the McDonald’s family. Customer service, handling money, using equipment and product

quality control headline the list of practical skills gained through McDonald’s employment and then there are the time management skills, team skills and communication. This region alone boasts a number of success stories, where McDonald’s crew members have gone on to bigger and better things both internally and externally of the fast food giant. Current Mount Gambier manager Alistair Coonan is a case in point. What started a decade ago as a good way to make money as a 14 year old, has now grown into a career that has provided him with the foundation skills needed for management across any number of career fields. Alistair originally started work at McDonald’s because his brother worked there and he wanted to also earn money to fund the usual teenage expenses of a car and mobile phone. “Then when I was about to finish high school I realised I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and I was really enjoying earning good money so I actually quit school and increased my hours at McDonald’s,” Alistair said. While he admits he wishes he finished school and encourages his current staff to do just that, he doesn’t believe he has missed out on any opportunities because of the decision. “I realise now that the things I wanted to do could have happened just six months down the track,” he said. “But it hasn’t hindered any of my training and study opportunities through McDonald’s and that will set me up for life.” Alistair has completed four managerial courses through McDonald’s, including a Diploma of Management. He has completed a Diploma in Retail Management and is currently working his way through and Advanced Diploma of Management. He admits he still has mates that give him a hard time about working at McDonald’s. “They joke around and ask

when I’m going to get a real job,” Alistair said. “But for my age I have a huge amount of responsibility and have had a lot of training opportunities and even overseas travel as well as earning good money.” Alistair, who was promoted to restaurant manager as a 21 year old, is responsible for 130 staff and, in turn, the customer service, product quality and everything associated with running a successful store. “I certainly have plenty of challenges but there are also plenty of rewards,” Alistair said. Naracoorte franchisees Bryce and Liz Crick also started their journey at the grassroots of McDonalds. The couple, who met at a McDonald’s training course, are the faces behind Naracoorte’s first McDonald’s restaurant and having been with the global phenomenon since they were both 15, they can’t speak highly enough of the opportunities a career with the Golden Arches has afforded them. “We’ve received so much training and been able to work our way up to management and now franchisees,” Liz said. Hailing from Bairnsdale, Bryce opted to pursue his management journey in regional Victoria, supervising two stores, while Liz was advancing through the marketing and PR department for three Melbourne restaurants. “McDonald’s provides you with the chance to advance your career and to define pathways and it’s basic training that is valuable even if you want to get into other areas,” Liz said.

This magazine has come a long way to get to your home. Hundreds of thousands of people have been busy harvesting and manufacturing forest products that make not only this magazine, but everything from your furniture and kitchen benches to the paper your children write on at school or work. It’s an industry with an annual turnover in the tens of billions of dollars and the signs are good that the increasing demand for sustainable, carbon-rich wood and paper products will continue well into the future. In regional South Australia and Victoria alone, we are seeing increased harvesting volumes of hardwood pulp plantation. As harvesting volumes increase in the Green Triangle region, so too does the opportunity for skilled harvesting and haulage workers. There is a real need for more highly skilled workers in this sector. This skills shortage is such an important issue that it is now being addressed as part of the ForestWorks Innovation Skills Program. A working group has been established in the Green Triangle region. The ‘Innovation solutions to specific skill shortages’ group is focused on developing and implementing solutions to skills shortages in regional

forestry districts. The initial focus of the group is to develop solutions to skills shortages caused by the seasonal nature of some work opportunities. David Quill, a well-known industry leader, will lead the group while ForestWorks has engaged Peter McLean from Development Impacts who is an expert on innovation and collaboration to facilitate. The project also includes valuable contributions from Steve Witherow, South East Log Hauliers Association; Tony Price, Australian Bluegum Plantations; Andy Cusack, LITA Training; Owen Trumper, OneFortyOne Plantations; Laurie Hein, Green Triangle Forest Products; Adrian Hatch, Forestry South Australia; and Ian McDonnell, NF McDonnell & Sons. LOCAL AFL star works with young leaders

From being drafted into the Essendon Football Club as a 16 year, through a celebrated AFL career and then the horrors of the Bali bombing, Jason McCartney captivated his audience at the annual Glenelg Shire Recreation Forum, held in Portland last last month. He joined an impressive list of guest speakers, including South West Sports Academy (SWSA) Board Member Mark Taylor, South West Sport Healthy Sporting Environments Program Manager Andrew Sloane, Bethany Community Support Sports Club Program worker Raj Samrai, Good Sports Program Project Officer Dean Kilpatrick and South West Sports Club Development and Access for All Abilities Program representative Judy Mutsaers, in presenting to the 70 local club and community group representatives. As a condition of their licence agreement with council, it is a requirement that tenants of council owned or managed reserves send attendees to these forums, as well as the two sets of training organised by council each year. McCartney was in town to assist the 16 young leaders from The Whitten Project

in running a community footy clinic, which was also attended by AFL Victoria representatives and about 100 students. Cr John Northcott said McCartney’s involvement in local sport, both at this forum and through the Whitten Project, had provided an invaluable opportunity for students, parents, coaches and club coordinators. “It was great to get McCartney’s professional and personal perspective and input into our local sports programs,” Cr Northcott said. “As well as being guest speaker at the forum, he facilitated a question and answer session with the Whitten Project young leaders - it’s opportunities like this which ensure our next generation have the leadership skills required to develop our clubs and groups into the future. “Attendees at the forum rated all of the presenters very highly, and particularly commented on the professionalism of the young leaders.” As part of his involvement with the Whitten Project, McCartney also hosted a networking lunch at the council chambers, with three of the young leaders speaking to councillors about their experiences in the program so far. “Both the lunch and the coaching clinic provided young leaders with the opportunity to give back some of their learnings to the community, having recently obtained their Active After-schools program coaching accreditation through the program,” Cr Northcott said. The next Whitten Project event will be the final Melbourne camp from August 22-24.

The Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group is inviting women who have survived domestic violence to share their stories with their community in a project to raise awareness and inspire others. Presented by the Mt Gambier Soroptomists, in partnership with the Zonta Club of Adelaide, and supported by Bank SA, the ‘Walk In My Shoes’ display pairs anonymously written stories of hope with shoes that represent the women’s walking out of domestic violence. The display will tour the Limestone Coast in September and October this year. Local women who have left domestic violence relationships are invited to share their stories, which will be presented anonymously in the display with the shoes of their choice. Professional counselling and support will be available to ensure the storytelling experience remains a positive one. Chairperson of the Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group, Le-Anne Thomson said the group welcomed involvement from local women to share their stories of hope. “Domestic Violence is an issue that affects every facet of our community,” she said. “It can be extremely difficult for women to leave an abusive relationship, and this project aims to give hope to those women that there is light on the other side.” In Australia, a woman is killed almost every week by her partner. But abuse is often also emotional, psychological, financial and sexual, as well as physical. Women in these relationships become increasingly isolated, making it harder for them to seek assistance. Women who have moved on from domestic violence relationships and would like to share their stories of hope can contact Le-Anne at the Family Violence Action Group on 0458 554 616 before August 8. If you are experiencing domestic violence and need assistance, please contact the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service on (08)8723 1385 or free call 1800 631 385.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Politically correct = LIES... by Robbie Tansel

I enjoyed the recent controversy involving Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie. or those who missed it, when interviewed and asked about what she’s looking for in a man, the Tasmanian senator said “they must have heaps of cash and they’ve got to have a package between their legs, let’s be honest. I don’t need them to speak, they don’t even need to speak.” Not much of a surprise that she joined billionaire Clive Palmer’s party then, is it? Predictably her comments weren’t received particularly well. One of the biggest criticisms involved the double standards. Several critics commented on the fact that if a male politician had dared to make similar comments about females they’d be eaten alive. Now ordinarily, I’d be agreeing with these pundits. If a male politician dared to make such outrageous comments they’d be kissing their political career goodbye. That’s called political correctness. The more I think about it, the more I think Jacqui Lambie’s comments are fantastic.

After all, politicians are the people that we are entrusting with the keys to our country. They are the ones who are setting the direction for our country and having a huge influence on our general quality of life. Surely we want to know exactly who we’re dealing with. My only criticism of Ms Lambie would be that she didn’t let us see that she was a complete moron prior to the election. Admittedly we probably should have guessed that a person who had volunteered for a Labor senator, joined the Liberal party, ran for preselection for the Liberal party before spitting the dummy and joining Palmer United is a little different. Especially if they’re Tasmanian. Keep in mind that she won Tasmania’s sixth senate position about fifteen thousand votes ahead of a Liberal hopeful and Robbie Swan from the Australian Sex Party. They’re a little bit different in Tasmania. But we really should be applauding Jacqui Lambie. Fancy this, a politician who actually says what’s really in their head. Who else is sick to death of politicians who you can

Acclaimed dancers in Hamilton see are weighing every single word for two seconds before they dare to speak it out loud? They all sound like every robot from an 80s television show. Or Christopher Walken. Most of them seem absolutely terrified that they’ll say something that actually means something. They’re all totally convinced that the best thing to do is to try to say things that are empty of meaning and could not possibly offend anyone so they get to keep their job for a few more years. Not Jacqui Lambie. She’s looking for a bloke who’s well endowed and has lots of money. Just ask her. I don’t know if I’m sounding sarcastic or not, but the more I think about it the more I think that political correctness is poison. We all know there are dozens of topics or issues that we can’t dare discuss because it would be sexism/ racism/ ageism/ nerdism. Some things genuinely need to be discussed and challenged but they can’t be because they’re on the do not discuss list. I’m certainly not saying that we should just say whatever we want because some things are racist or sexist or whatever the case may be. But we’re all in trouble if we can’t have rational discussions with people having a variety of points of view. Imagine if our politicians said what they thought, not just what they thought got them the most votes at the next election. If you’d like to tell me that political correctness is fantastic, you’re entitled to your opinion but don’t bother emailing me at robbietansel@gmail.com

The Adelaide based company, One Point 618 Dance Theatre, will be in Hamilton on Saturday, August 9, to perform its latest piece, Involuntary”. The work is a humorous look at the overblown world of technology and the overcomplicated layers of our life. “If anyone has ever struggled to remember the ridiculous number of computer passwords we are expected to know or had to put up with a monotonous voice telling us to push button six if we want to actually speak to a human, this will make them smile,” said Katrina Lazaroff, Director of One Point 618. “It questions if we are really living the way we want to. Our lives are becoming so busy and preoccupied by multiple demands, we often avoid questioning all the craziness of life.” The performance and dancers have won acclaim on their current national tour with their entertaining, provocative and often hilarious dance work. The 60 minute performance is at 7pm and tickets are available from the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre box office or by calling (03)5573 0429 or online at the centre’s website.

The Portland community is being urged to work together to take a stand against drug and alcohol abuse. Glenelg Southern Grampians Drug Treatment Service (GSGDTS), in conjunction with a network of local services, is launching a new campaign to inspire a whole-ofcommunity response to ongoing problems with alcohol and other drugs, in particular the escalation of ice as a serious local issue. Research shows that the most effective way to tackle local problems is with local initiatives and community support. The campaign will kick off with a public forum on September 11, featuring nationally recognised child and adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and other speakers. Service clubs and other local sponsors have been quick to support this community forum and a strategic plan to work with health promotion, schools, sporting clubs and industry. GSGDTS manager Bev McIlroy said the forum would be an opportunity for parents, grandparents, schools, sporting clubs and other interested community people to increase their awareness about local drug and alcohol use and some tips for prevention. “We don’t want the profile of Portland and district to include escalating alcohol and drug misuse, and definitely don’t want an increasing issue for our younger community members, she said. “We can’t rely solely on governments to reduce the number of people who suffer each year from entirely preventable alcohol and other drug (AOD)-related causes. Local community prevention programs can have a significant impact on reducing these harms. Prevention can be challenging, but we have a committed network of community services keen to work with our community to reduce the harms from drug use. Most importantly we need parents and families on board to drive the community response.”The forum will explain about the drug ice, look at the warning signs of use, discuss how to access professional help and look at practical strategies to reduce harms. It will also explain how alcohol underpins many of the region’s substance abuse problems. The forum and campaign is being supported by a network that also includes Portland police, Glenelg Shire, local youth services, Portland District Health and the local schools network.

The Russell Industries & Pick Avenue Deli & Bakery 50 Target shoot was held at the end of last month and with the State Shoot looming plenty of locals are keen to practice on Burrungle Park. Lake Bonney’s Danny Bellinger took out High Gun with a couple of perfect rounds 50/50. He only just held out Jeremy Kent who also shot a perfect round and came in with a 24 in the second to finish with 49/50. Kent therefore had to be content with AA honours. Ken Atkin and Malcolm Whitehead shot off for 2nd in AA with the experienced Whitehead finishing the better. Veteran Neville Kent produced some good scorers to finish ahead of Geoff Lowe and Wayne Evans. Junior shooter Curtis Scheidl and Sub junior Liam Bottomley also shot well. PIONEERS South East Australian Basketball League CASTEC RURAL SUPPLIES MOUNT GAMBIER PIONEERS 87 (E. Burdon 24; D. Johnson 21; B. Hill 16; B. Allen 12; M. Sutton 7; J. Warbout 5; L. Blicavs 2) d NORTH WEST TASMANIA 79. The North West Tasmanian line-up was always going to be a tough proposition for the top ranked Pioneers and so it proved as the home side set up a narrow four point buffer at the first change and then trailed by just one going into the main break. As it has been so often for the Mount Gambier team, it was the third quarter that helped set up the win, as the Pioneers established a lead that was to be the final margin - an eight point buffer - going into the last. The 23-14 quarter was just enough to break open the tight struggle. The Thunder was left to rue some poor free throw conversion, shooting 10 from 18 and were also outrebounded on both the offensive and defensive boards. The field goal percentage and three point shooting was on a par, with both sides sharing the scoring load - both boasting four players in double figures on the scoreboard. The Pioneers sit five wins clear at the top of the South Conference with a 20-4 record. This Friday night, the Pioneers host South Conference rival seventh ranked Canberra at the Icehouse and back that up with their fourth consecutive home game with a final minor round clash against fourth ranked Bendigo on August 17. Tip off both weeks is at 8pm. lifestyle1.net | 35

Local Sport Huge coup for local indoor bowls

Mount Gambier’s home of basketball - the Icehouse - is set to be transformed this August into an indoor bowling arena when the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association hosts the 45th Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships. This is the first time the local association has hosted the event under since the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls Council was established. It did host the inaugural Australian Indoor Bowls Championship 45 years ago when the event was a totally different concept and in that instance, it was the Mount Gambier Show Hall and 150 bowlers competed in singles, doubles and rink evets. Indoor bowls has been played for more than 85 years in Mount Gambier and it is an honour for the local association to host the 2014 championships on behlaf of the South Australian Indoor Bias Bowls Association. The National Championships are held on a rotation basis between five states - South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania - and this is the first time the South Australian hosted championships have been held outside of Adelaide. From August 2530, the Icehouse will be set up with 32 indoor bowls carpets covering all three of the basketball stadium courts.Organisers are expecting 280 of Australia’s best indoor bowlers arriving in Mount Gambier for 12 different championships - Ladies Singles, Men’s Singles, Ladies Pairs, Men’s Pairs, Mixed Pairs, Ladies Triples, Men’s Triples, Ladies Fours, Men’s Fours, Mixed Fours, Girls Singles and Boys Singles. All events have two teams representing each discipline and each championship is played in a round robin concept with points and percentage deciding the placing at the end of the week. The National Championships start on Monday, August 25, with an open fours tournament which teams enter to practice on the carpets and get a feel of the venue and this is open to any local teams that may want to enter. The official opening on Tuesday, August 26, at 8am with play starting at 8.30am and continuing until 5.30pm.That time frame continues for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and on Saturday, play wraps up at around 1pm and is followed by the championship presentations and closing ceremony. The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association has 19 Players selected in the 56 player list for the South Australian team and one Junior Boy who will be playing for New South Wales as a substitute. Four local players that will be representing the South Australian team will be the two Mixed Pairs teams. SA1 will be Fiona Pearson, with seven years experience at national level, and winner of the 2010 Ladies Singles and runner up in the 2012 Mixed Pairs with husband Craig. Craig Pearson will be playing in his ninth nationals skippering the Mixed Pairs with Fiona once again. SA2 team will be the partners of Kristy Davis and Brad Errock. Kristy Davis is playing her fourth Nationals and has been selected to play lead in the Mixed Pairs after two previous years playing Ladies Singles. The skipper in the team will be Brad Errock, playing his fifth National Championship in a row, making this his first time playing Mixed Pairs.

History making win

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association held its last association championship for the 2014 season last Thursday night. The Elma Attiwill/Sportscene Ladies Singles and the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s Singles were contested, also incorporating the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions. The final of the ladies event was a mother-daughter affair with Fiona and Keisha Pearson defeating Lorraine Van DenHoogen and Kym Franklin, respecitvely in the semi finals to make th championship match. Fiona scored two shots on the first end, but Keisha took control of the game on the second and third end scoring three shots on each of them and leaving her mother the task of scoring three shots on the last end to draw the game. But Fiona could only score two shots, leaving Keisha to take victory and win the Elma Attiwill/Sportscene Ladies Singles Championship 7 shots to 6. Keisha went down into the history books with the win being the youngest female, at the age of 14, to win the Ladies Association Singles. In the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s Singles was a clash between Bob Millgan and Perria Davis after Milligan ousted Zac Pearson at the semi final stage, and Davis got the better of Andrew Pearson. The men’s final was a little one sided with Davis scoring five out of the seven ends and allowing Milligan to score only three shots giving Perria victory 7 shots to 3 in the 2014 Men’s Singles Championship. This saw Keisha Pearson and Perria Davis meet in the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions, with both Keisha and Perria going for their first ever Champion of Champions crown. The game was very evenly balanced with the scores level on the third and fifth ends and then Keisha perfectly drew to the jack to take two shots leaving Perria to get three shots on the last end, but Keisha was the one to score three shots on the last end to be the youngest female to win the silverware 8 shots to 3. In the Ladies consolation semifinals Jennifer Bowering (Saints) defeated Dawn Sylvester (Moorak Red), 8 shots to 7, and Doreen Oakley (Commercial Club) defeated Emma Knight (Blue Lake Bowlers Blue), 10 shots to 1. The Ladies Consolation Final was won by Jennifer Bowering, defeating Doreen Oakley 7 shots to 3. In the Men’s consolation semi-finals Ron Ploenges(RSL & District) defeated Gary McIntyre (Mt Gambier Bowls Club) 6 shots to 4 and Craig Pearson (Post-Tel) defeated Peter Gregory (RSL & District) 7 shots to 6. The Men’s Consolation Final was won by Craig Pearson defeating Ron Ploenges 5 shots to 4. Along with the championship, a special presentation took place before play proceeded. Zac Pearson and Keisha Pearson, from the Post-Tel team, Emma Knight from the Blue Lake Bowlers Blue team, and Chris Sylvester, from the Moorak Red team, were presented with cheques from the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association. The money was presented to the four juniors by association President Andrew Simpson, to help them out to play in the 45th nationals in their home town of Mount Gambier.
