butcher almost scoops the pool at regional awards

Naracoorte’s Tender Cuts has again emerged as the premier sausage creator in the region, taking out four of the five categories at the recent Sausage King competition held this month. It means the popular butcher will now take on the rest of the State, with hopes high Tender Cuts can emulate its feats of a few years ago when its lamb, feta and spinach sausage took it all the way to the national finals. The Ormerod Street business finished top of the class with its barbecue butcher’s sausage in the traditional Australian category; Australian Lamb

open class (lamb, feta and spinach); traditional Australian pork (pork cassalinga) and poultry (chicken, spinach and pinenut). Tender Cuts finished third in the remaining category – gourmet open class – for Neil’s port, thyme and cranberry beef sausages. Only the barbecue butcher’s sausage had been slightly revamped for the 2014 competition with the remaining entries all remaining true to the original recipes that have proved so popular with their loyal customers over the years. Tender Cuts owner Shaun Watson said it was all about flavour and texture when it

came to quality sausage making. One of the most satisfying things from this year’s regional competition for Shaun was the fact there were such a high number of entries with more South East butchers taking up the challenge in 2014. The State awards will be presented at a gala dinner in August. Tender Cuts continued success in the Sausage King Competition is just reward for Shaun, who is coming up to 20 years in the industry, and his team. “A customer once said to me ’you can tell a lot about a butcher shop by how good their sausages are’ so to win these awards is extremely satisfying,” Shaun said. Tender Cuts has always been about providing quality, house made products and using local suppliers wherever possible. All Tender Cuts lamb is locally grown, with a third of the annual supply coming from Shaun and his father Frank and the rest from Graham and Karen Clothier. “It all comes from within 50km from the shop as the crow flies, you can’t get much more local than that,” Shaun said. “The consistent very high quality is what customers want and keeps them coming back.” The Watson’s

family brand of smallgoods is another huge drawcard to the Ormerod Street shop. “We make our own range of smallgoods and I am very proud of the fact that all of our pork used is 100% South Australian,” Shaun said. “We sell them under our Watson’s brand - something I am very proud of.” And Tender Cuts is always looking to add new products and expand its range and most recently it has been the Worchester Glazed Double Smoked Bacon, which has been a huge hit with bacon lovers, along with the wide range of mettwurst, kabana and kranskys. Tender Cuts’ ham and bacon is sliced fresh every day. Tender Cuts staff are very friendly, hard working and the public face of the business. “We strive to have the best service and products available at all times, and if we have not got it we will do our best to get it,” he said. As well as their award winning sausages and smallgoods, Tender Cuts keeps a range of items on display from the traditional to the meal ready for people to take home and simply cook. Southern Grampians Shire Council has thrown its support behind the Grampians Peaks Trail Master Plan, and is seeking State and Federal funding commitments to implement the Trail in its entirety. The Grampians Peaks Trail will be a world-class long-distance (144km) walking experience showcasing the majesty of the Grampians’ natural and cultural landscapes. The Federal Government has indicated it will establish a fund for tourism projects that will be administered by the State. SGSC, backed by the Great South Coast Group is now advocating to State Government to ensure this project remains ‘front and centre’. SGSC this week voted to endorse the Master Plan document subject to it being referred back to the Task Force charged with the development of the Master Plan and further consultation with local experts about the final alignment of the route. “This Peaks Trail has the potential to be a global tourism drawcard and we believe that the construction phase needs to be changed to maximise that potential, said SGSC Mayor Cr Albert Calvano. “We believe that it would be sensible to consider construction at the southern and northern tips, and not only in the central section as proposed in the Master Plan. This will provide tourism opportunities around Dunkeld and at the fire-ravaged areas around Wartook” he said.At the moment the Master Plan proposes to finalise construction of a three or four night walk around Halls Gap without any guarantee of future funding to complete the Trail. “The Royal Mail Hotel and other first-class accommodation providers in Dunkeld provide a different type of tourist experience to that available in Halls Gap, and investment in the southern section of the trail will provide opportunities to leverage additional private investment in Dunkeld as a tourist destination” said Cr Calvano. Supporting this, SGSC has recently engaged Mike Smith and Associates to design a ‘Loop Walk from Dunkeld’s town centre to the base of Mt Sturgeon. This pathway will provide pedestrian and cycling access to the Grampians National Park, and will ultimately link with the Grampians Peaks Trail.Dunkeld is the fastest growing town in south west Victoria, and the (Victorian) Minister for Planning has just approved changes to the Southern Grampians Planning Scheme that incorporates the Dunkeld Structure Plan. The changes allow for the creation of a new employment district, plus opportunities for retail and commercial development, as well as providing sensible low density rural lifestyle blocks on the edge of town.

July 12 - Dave Hughes – Pointless - LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE, WARRNAMBOOL As seen on The Project and Before The Game and as heard on Nova 100. He’s said goodbye to breakfast radio and farewell to The Project – all that remains is his first love – live, standup comedy. Hughesy is absolutely loving being back on stage with his all new show Pointless and he can’t wait to come home to the Lighthouse.

Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin welcomed mayors from around his electorate to Canberra last week. The local government leaders, who were in Canberra last week for the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly, joined Mr Pasin for dinner on Monday night before further meetings on Tuesday. This included time with The Hon Jamie Briggs MP, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, discussing local roads funding. The group of mayors visiting from Barker includes Allan Arbon (Murray Bridge), Dave Burgess (Mid Murray), Evan Flint (Kingston SE), Peter Hunt (Berri Barmera), Neil Martinson (Renmark Paringa), Robert Sexton (Southern Mallee), Roger Strother (Coorong), Erika Vickery (Naracoorte Lucindale) and Richard Vickery (Tatiara). As

councils in Barker have found, I am keen to work with local government to ensure important projects secure support.” “The week presented a significant opportunity for me to assist councils throughout Barker to enter into dialogue with the Federal Government regarding important local projects.”

hamilton art gallery July 9 – August 31 Wayne Viney – Singular Impressions

Singular Impressions surveys Melbourne artist, Wayne Viney’s responses to landscape over the past thirty years. Best known for his hauntingly evocative twilight studies, Viney masterfully draws upon the painterly potential of monotypes in his exploration of the pastoral tradition. This exhibition maps his transition from gestural drawings grounded in physical sites such as the Strathbogie Ranges and Yea, to his signature brooding monotypes of psychic landscapes, to recent colourband abstractions. Whether depicting the observed countryside of the Australian bush, or giving expression to the private vistas of an imagined scene, Viney imbues his images with a mood that is achingly sublime.

local story COONAWARRA WINES HIT THE ROAD

The time has come once again for the Coonawarra region to pack up and head off on its Australia wide Wine Tasting Roadshow. This year, the vignerons are excited to announce that they will be travelling to Hobart for the first time. Individual wineries from the renowned Coonawarra region will showcase more than 100 Coonawarra wines at this celebrated event. With up to 26 Coonawarra wineries represented, visitors will have the opportunity to taste the wines and meet the winemakers and owners behind these famous brands. The August roadshow takes in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide and Perth. For 11 years Coonawarra winemakers, winery owners and their families have embarked on a nationwide road trip to conduct tastings and chat to wine enthusiasts about their wines in six Australian capital cities. Katnook Estate has taken part in this event for the past 11 years and believes it is an integral part of the regions domestic development and growth. “Coonawarra is well known for producing world class red wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon” said Michelle. “The area’s secret lies in a magical marriage of rich red terra rossa soil, limestone, pure underground water and a long cool ripening season for the grapes”. The nest big event hosted locally is the ‘Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations’ in October. Tickets are $40 each and available on Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporates website.

LOCAL Portland “Perhaps I should have not been a fisherman, he thought. But that was the thing that I was born for.” It’s hard to miss this impressive and fitting quote by Ernest Hemmingway, set in bold print across a prominent concrete seating area at the new Portland Foreshore Harbour Precinct. The precinct will be officially opened by Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott and Victorian Premier Denis Napthine on July

11, with the area expected to be available for use immediately following. The Portland Foreshore Parking Strategy will come into place on July 1, almost two weeks prior to the official opening, and will apply to the current foreshore parking area until the new precinct is opened. Ticket machines, which will accept Visa and Mastercard, will be installed at key locations on the foreshore and daily passes can be prepurchased (cash, cheque or

credit card) during business hours at any of Council’s Customer Service Centres or Visitor Information Centres. Parking fees for vehicles towing boat trailers on the Portland Foreshore were set by council earlier this year and will be reviewed annually as part of the Council’s budget process. The daily pass fee for 2014/15 has been set at $10.00 per day. The cost of the annual parking permit for vehicles towing boat trailers is $110 from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. A concession fee is available to Glenelg Shire Council Ratepayers ($55.00 per annum) and residents of the Glenelg Shire who are concession card holders $55.00 per annum). Overflow parking areas have been incorporated into the finalised Portland Foreshore Parking Strategy and will be opened at council’s discretion. Mayor John Northcott said flyers, informing people of the changes about to take place, had been available at multiple locations across the Shire and on the Council website for some time. “Work on this precinct has moved very quickly and we want to ensure we have everything in place ready for the 11 July opening,” he said. “The area will remain fenced off area

COLLECTED STUPIDITY How to upset most of the world by Robbie Tansel Before I go anywhere, let it be clear that simplest way to upset most of the world is to criticise the

world’s game, football. Now if I really wanted to upset most of the world I’d start by calling the sport

I’m talking about soccer, instead of football. We all know that soccer fans think their game should

be referred to as football, since it is the original and purest form of football. I actually can’t argue with that too much. In the game that the Americans refer to as football, the foot only makes contact with the ball about three times in the match. Ditto any of the forms of rugby. In Aussie Rules football, the hands are used as frequently as the feet so you could justify calling it hands-and-feetball So before I upset all of the soccer fans telling you how I dislike your sport and your stupid World Cup, I will agree to refer to the sport as football for the rest of this article. I am also prepared to admit that I really am quite ignorant when it comes to football. I have played one official match so

really don’t understand the complexities and beauty of the sport. Well either I don’t understand it or there is no beauty in the sport. The concept of choosing World Cup venues has me a little puzzled for beginners. Brazil is a nice country to visit if you want to have your possessions stolen or get murdered. So why on earth would you choose this incredibly violent and dangerous location for the biggest event your sport contests? Maybe they made a little mistake this time, you might think. Well in 2018 the World Cup will be hosted in Russia which by then may well include the Ukraine, northern Mongolia, Belarus, Poland and parts of Finland. Clearly not a country that

f ff

Gamble Responsibly 1800 858 858

has ever been associated with safety and political stability. Not to mention that Vladimir Putin will get another chance to make ridiculous comments about homosexuality again. That must be the end of dodgy venues for almost the biggest sporting event in the world. So in 2022 it will be somewhere really safe and fan friendly like…I just Googled it and they’re saying Qatar. Is that even a real country? All right I just did some more Googling and it’s a big desert. Now before you start booking your tickets, Qatar is just a short range missile flight from such well known countries as Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Pakistan and Sudan. If you looked at a map you could easily say it was smack

bang right in the middle of the most dangerous countries in the world. Coincidentally “Smack” and “Bang” are two very common sounds in that area. It seems pretty clear that the dodginess of an area seems to work very strongly in the favour of a country making a bid to host the World Cup. At least we won’t have to travel far to get to the 2026 World Cup in Kalangadoo. Sorry to all the lovely people in Kalangadoo but that joke is too easy not to make. have to pick a nearby town and it was your turn. I think it’s back to Kongorong next time. I love Kalangadoo and Kongorong. Let me make a list of other things that annoy me about the World Cup. These were actually emailed to me from my friend Duncan from Dunkeld. But I agree with him. Nil all draws. Players celebrating like they’ve achieved something after a nil all draw. Way too many ridiculous hair cuts. he off side rule. Referees who are apparently good enough to referee at the premiere football event in the world who can’t get the offside rule right. Penalties. Penalties incorrectly awarded or missed. Over zealous arm and hand gestures. Players getting into the referee’s face disputing calls looking like someone just did number twos in their Froot Loops. Goalies screaming at defenders. More diving than the Olympic diving competition. Players getting stretchered to the sidelines then running back on. The way the referee tosses the coin. Players clutching their knees as if they’ve been shot when there was absolutely no contact with the knee. Players repeatedly kicking the ball around at the half way line. Shin pads being worn in a non contact sport. Australia not being good. I know. I’m ignorant and a Philistine. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and tell me all about it.

LOCAL Mentor Outstanding community response has prompted the Heywood Standing Tall Mentoring Program to seek space to accommodate a further five volunteer mentors. They will join the 29 mentors who are already working with students at their school for one hour each week. Standing Tall is a program which recruits and trains members of the community to act as mentors to students in a school and community setting. It is described as a resilience-based early intervention model, with an emphasis placed on the length of the relationship and the

program success in Heywood one on one nature. The initiative started in August 2013 as part of the State Government-funded Heywood, Lake Condah and Surrounding Towns Advancing Country Towns Project (2011-2015) Program coordinator Mandy Karatau-Keightley said that, since the program had started, the relationship between Heywood District Secondary College and Heywood Consolidated School has strengthened, particularly with students transitioning between Year 6 and Year 7. “The program has brought parents and community members into their school to support and mentor

LOCAL Community The popular and extensive Glenelg Shire Council Cultural Collection could soon be given a much-needed permanent home at the currently underused Portland Drill Hall. The Cultural Collection Feasibility Study (2013), undertaken by Urban Enterprise in 2013, identified the Drill Hall as a suitable location for a storage and display facility for Council’s Cultural Collection, with the location deemed to be secure and have ideal environmental conditions for the collection. our program has been blessed with many networks, professions and life experiences,” Ms Karatau-Keightley said. “This availability of networks has provided broader education and training opportunities for our mentees - two students have recently gained work placements within the wider community. “Students are gaining life skills and qualifications towards various career opportunities, with the support and guidance of their mentor and within the boundaries of the school rules and regulations.”

feedback needed

recommended the use of the Drill Hall for storage and display of the Cultural Collection. The proposal for use of the Drill Hall as a display centre for the Cultural Collection was adopted at the May Council Meeting on Tuesday night (27 May 2014) and will now be put to the public for their feedback. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said the Cultural Collection was currently stored in a number of locations across the Shire. “Currently the Drill Hall is underutilised and with the exception of Council’s youth program activities there are no regular users of the Drill Hall,”

he said. “Bookings for the Drill Hall in 2012 and 2013 indicated there were just four external hirers in that period and, while the Portland Calisthenics Group used the building on a regular basis until July 2012, the group has now purchased their own dance studio. “Other short-term external users of the Drill Hall over the past two years have been the Senior Citizens, who used the hall while the Fawthrop Centre was undergoing repairs, Koorie Justice and Portland Belly

Dancers.” Cr Northcott said consideration needed to be given to the current use of the Drill Hall as a recovery facility during major emergency incidents. “If the Drill Hall was to be used as a storage/ display facility for the Cultural Collection, full commissioning of the Portland Civic Hall would be required for major emergency events, and an alternative venue used for storage and staff.” Letters will be sent to stakeholders inviting feedback on this proposal and comments will also be sought from the general public.

Community foundation hands out grants Community groups across South West Victoria are sharing more than $70,000 to support projects ranging from production of a possum skin cloak to launching new social enterprises. The South West Community Foundation has just announced nearly $32,000 to local groups in a new round of funding which has been supplemented by an additional $38,544 through a partnership with the Isobel and David Jones Family Foundation and the Fletcher Jones Foundation. The South West Community Foundation has agreed to administer grants this year on behalf of the Jones Foundations to projects that fit their criteria. South West Community Foundation executive officer Linda Grant said there had been strong demand for support this year with 49 applications requesting more than $173,000. During 2013/14, the Foundation allocated a record $68,325.77 in two rounds – more than double any previous financial year. The boost in allocations has been timely with record

requests for support. It also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first community foundations worldwide. Major projects receiving support in the new round of funding include bringing opera to nursing homes across the region, a digital cinema upgrade in Port Fairy, a south west bursary for the Melbourne Accelerator Program to launch a local social enterprise, assistance for running The F Project retail shop in Warrnambool, refurbishment of the Melville Forest Hall, and educational play equipment for the Hamilton Community House which will be shared with kindergartens and schools across Southern Grampians Shire. There were also 100 additional $50 education vouchers distributed across the region. The support of the Isobel and David Jones Family Foundation and the Fletcher Jones Foundation this year had been invaluable. “We had received applications requesting more than four times the amount of money

we had available. Their support has helped us to assist many worthwhile causes.” Foundation board chairman Barrie Baker said the foundation represented local people looking after local people. “It is funding coming from local people and going to local people,” he said. Mr Baker said the application process was simple and gave groups a quick turnaround for their projects. “These are projects in the community where local people can get involved. We hope to that our grants inspire more participation in local organisations.” He added that the opportunity for a social entrepreneur from south west Victoria to participate in the four month Accelerator Program in Melbourne was particularly exciting. The program helps people to become ready to launch or grow their social enterprise. Applicants can apply to the School for Social Entrepreneurs. “There is increasing demand for support and we are pleased to be making available these helpful grants. “We look forward to more support from the local community over the next year so we can continue to invest in improving the way of life for local residents and helping local organisations to achieve their goals.”

hospital facelift continues

Plans for the original laundry at Mount Gambier’s Old Hospital site are beginning to take shape. Scaffolding has now been erected around the prominent landmark in order to complete reinforcement walls, permanent bracing and other rehabilitation works. The City of Mount Gambier’s Manager Regulatory Services, Michael Silvy, met with local construction team, Andrae Builders, at the Lake Terrace site last week, and estimates that the major works will be completed by August. “The next part of the job is to patch, paint and repair, which includes a new external roof coating and painting of the internal walls,” he said. The external walls are likely to remain in their weathered state, while the interior finish of the distinctive barrel vaulted ‘curved roof’ is still open to ideas, with everything from a painted fresco to plain ceiling white up for consideration. “Standing up here, it’s exciting to see

the potential of the site – it’s a credit to council that they had the foresight to retain the building, because the beauty of it is plain to see, now,” Mr Silvy said. “It’s got some real architectural merit and integrity, but probably the most appealing part of the building is the panoramic views it captures over the city and crater lakes precinct.” Mr Silvy said the laundry’s positioning on the slope of a hill will make it the ideal venue for concerts and other special events, with the expansive shelter and planned toilets and lighting creating a year-round social gathering space. “We’ve already got people ringing up wanting to book it for weddings – the public are really starting to see the value in it,” he said. Children from the Mount Gambier Child Care Centre are also looking forward to using the new facilities. They have been keeping a close eye on the old hospital as part of their community awareness project ‘Broken Windows’, and have watched the transformation from derelict site to spacious parkland with fascination. “I’ve lost

count of the number of times we went there during the demolition stage – it was two to three times a week with different groups of children each time, and even when we were out and about on other excursions, they would still ask to go home via the old hospital,” said childcare educator Michelle McKinnon, adding that many children also visited with their families. Photos taken during the visits have been made into jigsaw puzzles, which are proving a very popular play activity, while the recently released four-minute clip featuring time lapse footage has regular daily screenings at the centre. “They love it – it’s been such a great way to revisit the project and because it’s so quick they’re looking for lots of different things within the footage,” Michelle said. “It’s one of those iconic things that we will remember for many,

many years.” Four-year-old Brandon is among those expressing amazement at the “movie”. “I don’t know how that machine got it all done by itself,” he said. The children were particularly enthralled by the ‘dinosaur-like’ heavy equipment operating on-site: “The old hospital has the daddy machine and the baby machine,” said Mia. “But there’s no hospital now – it’s all gone, and now it’s going to be green grass so it looks nice,” added Samuel. Mount Gambier Child Care Centre is now hoping to contribute to the new public space. “We’re looking at making an art piece, and it would be fantastic to have it displayed up there, as we’re looking forward to taking the children up for barbecues and really using the space as a centre,” Michelle said. To avoid disappointment teachers forewarned the students many of the soldiers might not be able to return the favour– so you can imagine their excitement when over half the class received personal handwritten letters back from the soldiers. Teacher Tina Opperman, said they had already received three parcels containing

from the past

about 30 letters. “The students received handwritten replies to their letters from soldiers currently on assignment in Sudan and Afghanistan,” Mrs Opperman said. “Some of the letters included photographs, money from the country they were serving in and even badges. “The children were so excited, you couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces.” She said those who received a letter back had the chance to sit down and read it aloud to the entire class. In addition to the letters sent by the students, which included information about themselves, Mount Gambier and their school, they also

included a little touch of Australia with a mintie, vegemite sachet and ANZAC biscuit. The gift was based on the Princess Mary tins given out in World War I where the 17 year old princess sent over 426,000 tins containing confectionary, spices, pencils, a Christmas card and a picture of the princess to the British, Colonial and Indian Armed Forces. Mrs Opperman said the children hadn’t known who they were sending the letters to and had addressed them all as “Dear Soldier”. The letters were then sent to an address in Sydney, were they were dispatched to various bases overseas. The students’ history studies also included a South East focus, where they researched local soldiers, looked at their place of birth, the war in which they served and their family history. The three Year 3 classes also visited the Mount Gambier RSL and chatted with war veterans, visited the Mount Gambier Library to read war stories and conducted a touching memorial service at the World War I memorial at Vansittart Park. Celebrating 50 years of taking care of the community MILLICENT & DISTRICT HOSPITAL & HEALTH SERVICES 50 years of taking care of the community - A snapshot of how it all unfolded 1961 - special public meeting held 19th May in St Alphonsus hall. Mr J Brennan moved and Mr J Grigg seconded that a new hospital be built in Millicent 1962 - A tender from Mr A.W.Baulderstone of Adelaide for the construction of the new hospital with a contract price of £207,423 was accepted in December 1962. The hospital’s foundation stone was laid by the Director-General of Medical Services Dr. J.W.Rollinson, 1963 - C.B.E. on May 31st 1963. 1964 - Thirteen months later on June 28th Millicent’s new 52 bed hospital was officially opened by the Chief Secretary Sir Lyell McEwin M.L.C. The total cost including the Nurses Home and landscaping was in the vicinity of ££320,000. Millicent’s National Trust Branch prepared documents to be put in a sealed container to be deposited under the Foundation Stone. The following plaques were to be moved from the Thyne Memorial hospital to the new Millicent and District hospital - J. Grigg, A.C. Shepherd, Dr. A Thyne, Lucy Mott, Francis Kay, and Nitschke. Matrons of the new hospital were: 1961- 64 Matron Kellock; 964 – 1965 D. Barclay; 1965 – 1967 Miss D Russell; 1967 – 71 Margaret Carruthers; 1971 – 72 Mrs Finch; 1972 – 1989 Mrs Val Stewart; 1977 – 81 Miss D Masters was appointed first deputy Matron 1979 - From July 1979 matrons, now called Director of Nursing (DON). Mrs Darrilyn Cowling was appointed DON in 1989 followed by Mr Paul Bullen. Currently the DON is Ms.Ros Brown. As quoted by a former nurse, the changing of rules within the hospital from the regimental status were for the better – no longer did the nurses have to stand with their hands behind their backs when a Sister entered the room. 1964 - Doctors servicing the hospital in 1964 were Donald Jorgenson, George (Bill) Williams and David Harris The first patient in the New Millicent and District hospital was Mr G.H.Bird of Tantanoola. The privilege of being the first baby born in the new hospital was Bronwyn Venetia daughter of Mr & Mrs J.F.Leigh Opening Day 1963 – Hon. R.C.DeGaris said the day was an important one in the history of Millicent – it was the last step in the work, trials and tribulations of many people in bringing to

fruition the largest community effort in which the district had engaged itself. He said many people had helped but two administrations stood out, these being the A.C. Shepherd-Melville Bell period and the Melville Bell-Tom Prowse term. 1966 - The first lady appointed onto the hospital board with Cr. Gladys V. Smith taking on this role. No history of the hospital would be complete without a tribute to the hospital auxiliaries which have operated in the district for many years. Community contributions from several groups including cancer support, Red Cross and craft along with local service clubs and Kimberly-Clark social club have been and continue to be generous in their support of the hospital. 1970 - The first domiciliary meals (Meals on Wheels) distributed from the Millicent hospital being instigated by the Lion’s club. Annual hospital carnivals and parades were popular community events and became for the hospital a main source of income. 2014 - Mr. Mitch Williams MP unveils Millicent Hospital 50th year commemoration plaque. Millicent Hospital continues to proudly provide care to the community.

land donation signals community support

THE Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West will donate $40,000 to the city’s Rail Lands project in a bid to give back to a community which has supported it over many years. Members of the service group approached the City of Mount Gambier about the possibility of contributing to the transformation of the once-derelict site, using invested profits from their biggest fundraiser to date

– a house construction on John Powell Drive. “Around 60 businesses contributed in their own way to the success of that project, whether it was through donated and discounted materials, delayed payment terms or free labour,” said publicity officer Frank Monger. “We now want to put a portion of the funds we raised back into the community for the benefit of the community, so that everyone who helped us

can also reap the benefits and really enjoy this new public space.” During last week’s cheque handover at the site, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West also acknowledged the $50,000 loan provided by council in order to kick-start their own construction in 2010. “We repaid the money, but it certainly helped us to get going with some of our early expenses, and now we want to show our appreciation and work together once more,” said Mr Monger. The club has already held two working bees at the site, planting hundreds of native shrubs. Development guidelines have stipulated that several heritage features be reinstated in order to preserve an important layer of local history, and members have also volunteered to refurbish original telegraph poles. Fencing along Wehl Street and the construction of at least one bridge across a creek designed to flow into an urban wetland is also on their to-do list. “In addition to providing funding, we’re also providing labour – we’re very proud and excited to be involved, and to be able to demonstrate the sort of work that we do

as an organisation,” said Mr Monger. The City of Mount Gambier’s deputy mayor Penny Richardson said the donation reinforces council’s well-established relationship with local service clubs. “It’s a great example of the perpetual momentum created when the community is working collaboratively for the benefit of our future, and we’re thrilled that the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West has seen the merit in this project,” she said. “The fact members have the capacity to complete some of the work themselves rather than just give money makes it even more impressive,” said the Mount Gambier City Council regulatory services manager Michael Silvy. “It’s an exciting development for Mount Gambier, and every organisation that we can have on board raises the quality of the partnerships and the final product.” Left - City of Mount Gambier regulatory services manager Michael Silvy, project head Ary VandenHurk, City of Mount Gambier deputy mayor Cr Penny Richardson and Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West incoming president Brian Shanahan.

award for Country Health SA Geraghty said. “This award recognises the phenomenal amount of work that has gone into delivering these new services, from designing and building chemotherapy units, to training local staff to deliver the lifesaving cancer treatment. “More than 100 country nursing staff have undergone state-wide chemotherapy training, while more than 50 new procedures have been implemented across our 15 chemotherapy units to ensure they meet state-wide and national standards, guidelines and legislation. “The Country Cancer Services Project Team has also developed a pharmacy model, improving standards to maintain the safe supply of chemotherapy

Country Health SA has been recognised on the national stage for its innovation in implementing new and enhanced service improvement projects across rural SA. The Country Cancer Services team took out the top honour in the general category at the National Lead Clinicians Group 2014 Awards for Excellence in Innovative Implementation of Clinical Practice. It was one of two successful nominations for Country Health SA, which also took out the runner-up prize for its mental health occupational therapy project in the Cultural Competence in Indigenous Care in the Management of Chronic Disease category. Country Health SA chief executive officer Maree Geraghty said the awards, presented at a ceremony in Melbourne last week, were exciting achievements and recognised the dedication of Country Health SA staff to improving health care in rural SA. “Two years ago, Country Health SA started a program to deliver safe cancer services in dedicated chemotherapy units across our state,” Maree

PIONEERS SCRAP FOR IMPORTANT HOME VICTORY The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers remain a win clear, with a game in hand , at the top of the South Conference ladder after securing a gritty, albeit, unattractive win over Hobart on Friday night at the Icehouse. Trailing at the half, the home side, rallied in the third to keep the high scoring Hobart Chargers to only 11 points and while they only scored 17 themselves, the two point three quarter time deficit had the match basically back on an even keel. Fortunately the Pioneers were then able to get the better of the Chargers in the last to lead by four points at the final whistle. It was a game that never reached great heights with both teams struggling to run any kind of fluent offence and while the Chargers form from beyond the arc threatened to be the difference in the contest, eventually the Pioneers, who made good use of their trips to the charity stripe, were able to find a way. So while the home side had the better of the free throw statistics and the visitors were better from long range, the rest of the match stats reflected the tightness of the contest, across rebounding and field goal percentage, including points in the paint. Once glaring issue for the Chargers was turnovers – 17 for the match compared with the Pioneers nine, with the home side also able to effect three more steals. In fact when you tally up the Pioneers scoring 19 points from turnovers and 19 points from second chance baskets, compared with the Chargers scoring a total of 20 points combined from those two avenues and there was the ball game. Damian Johnson was a key for the home side with his 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Brad Hill picked up 22 and eight, while Tom Daly (pictured below) was solid with 16 points and six rebounds. The Pioneers ran out winners 81-77. The Pioneers host Albury Wodonga this Friday night with tip off at 8pm. The Bandits have only three wins for the season.

motor new health service for portland A long-running campaign to introduce chemotherapy and medical oncology care in Portland will soon become a reality. Day stay chemotherapy will soon be offered for the first time at Portland District Health (PDH) along with regular face-to-face oncology consultations. The services are due to start within the next month on dates to be confirmed. Plans for the day chemotherapy unit started in 2010 following a successful submission for Commonwealth Department of Health funding. The new service aligns with the Victorian Cancer Action Plan which aims to deliver care to patients as close to home as possible. The Portland chemotherapy unit will operate one day per week and will provide improved access to oncology and chemotherapy services for district residents. The unit has been facilitated by the Barwon South Western Regional Integrated Cancer Service, in collaboration with South West Oncology, South West Healthcare, Barwon Health Cancer Services and Portland District Health. It will be supervised by oncologists from Warrnambool-based South West Oncology, Drs Theresa Hayes, Ian Collins and Oliver Klein, and supported by on-site PDH physicians and specially trained PDH nursing staff. Dr Ian Collins described the new service as “an exciting development for cancer patients”. The service will initially be available to patients who have previously received chemotherapy treatment. Highly specialised treatment will not be available and the service will be most suited to patients needing low to medium complexity treatment. PDH Chief Executive Officer Chris Giles said the service would allow more Portland district people to receive chemotherapy closer to home.
