priced kelpie heading to Lillimur

Left - Ruby Austin (aka Supergirl) and Cozzy during the Kelpie Festival. Strathkellar Kelpie breeder Ian O’Connell proved yet again there is money in trained dogs when he sold 22-month-old Bagalla Coke (pictured above) for $10,000 at the 2014 Clark Rubber Casterton Working Dog Auction on the June Long Weekend. Lillimur mixed farmer Mark Williams bought Bagalla Coke to help work the 5000 SAMMs and Merinos on his family’s 4000 hectare sheep and cropping operation

alongside the Western Highway. Ian O’Connell said he hoped Coke’s price sent a message that training dogs using the correct methods paid dividends. The auction was an opportunity for jackeroos and jillaroos to make some money for well-trained dogs. “I have absolutely no time whatsoever for electronic devices in training because I think you won’t be selling $10,000 dogs here if you train them with an electric collar,” Ian said. It was Mark

William’s first visit to the Casterton auction with his daughters Alannah, 16, and Ebony,10. But he needed to replace his recently deceased top dog Quinn and could see Coke was a “complete all-rounder”. “He’s going to suit everything I do on the farm.” The young dog was good value at the $10,000 price tag, he said. “When you buy dog at one year and 10 months, you are buying for the future.”

Ian sold Coke’s older brother Bagalla Mister for the same amount last year. Bagalla Coke demonstrated well, was very mature for his age and would also be a good candidate for the 2014 RMA futurity trial at Casterton, he said. RMA Network auctioneers James Tierney and Bernie Grant sold seven dogs for $5000 or more at the auction, including Ricky Jones’ 30-monthold Kelvin for $8000 to Dwayne Evans from

Menindee and Jack Leonard’s 17-month-old Sam for $7000 to the Sutton family at Buchan South. The Old family’s Emu Park operation at Balranald bought three dogs, including Andrew Kennedy’s 18-monthold Duke for $6000, Ian Stringer’s 31-month-old Backenbark Brigadier for $5000 and Joe Spicer’s 31-month-old Ape for $4500. Murtoa breeder Rod Hammond sold 32-month-old dog Robbie for $5500 and Yarra

Junction breeder Steve Sudero sold 30-monthold Rusty for $5000. In the older pups, Clint Shelton from Bracknell sold 11-month-old Island Squirt for $4500, Timothy Hall from Cressy sold 16-monthold Diesel for $4500 and Welshpool breeder Paul McPhail sold 14month-old Nugget for $3750. The top-priced pup under five months old was Peter and Beth Sandral’s Mate, that sold for $2300.

Steady Eddie the Kelpie and his work mate Tack nailed the opposition for Apsley farm manager James Ridgway in Australia’s most expensive yard dog trial in Casterton

on the June Long Weekend. James took home $6000 in prizemoney from the 2014 RMA Network Working Dog Auction Futurity. “It’s better than a bag of dog food,”

James said after winning first place and $4000 with three-year-old Hilton Park Eddie in the futurity trial, and second place for $2000 cash with Karana Tack. Eddie

was a steady performer throughout the trial, scoring 83 and 92 points in his first two runs, then 82 in the final, to edge out Tack with runs of 80, 80 and 90. James said Eddie was pretty consistent and judge Lee Mickan said the dog was calm and well handled on the difficult Merino wethers. “He didn’t fire his sheep up and Tack also kept the sheep calm,” Lee said. Third place and $1000 cash went to Ian O’Connell with Carters Transport’s Lessi’s Charlie, when despite two top runs of 91 and 89 points, some difficult sheep

pushed the pair overtime in the final to give a third run score of 60. Fourth place went to Andrew Kennedy with Choker, who he sold to Springhurst farmers Beth and Peter Sandral at Casterton last year. James said Eddie was his main dog on ‘Llanthro’, the mixed livestock and cropping property he manages at Apsley with his wife Katrina. She said it was her idea to buy Eddie at the 2012 auction. “He was the only one that impressed me – when some sheep got cut out, he went back and picked

It was Ian’s third win in the challenge in seven attempts and his score of 442 points was well clear of second placegetter John Tanner from Glenthompson on Barnett’s Commando with kelpie Gogetta Sue. Lucindale stockman Rob Copping on Red Rogue and with kelpie Pomanda Zack was third with 368 points. The popular dog high jump was won for the second consecutive year by Jarrod Quick’s potato farm dog Moe (pictured above) with a jump of 2.49 metres. “He hasn’t jumped since last year and yes, he follows the potato harvester around all

day.” Equal second place went to Casey Waters’ Louey and Adrian Mattschoss’ Ace, who both cleared 2.42 metres. Third place went to Ian Roberts’ Nudge. The King of the Kelpies Triathlon champion was Matt Haines Finn from Nudge in second place and Casey Waters’ Lui in third place. Finnwas the quickest up the hill climb in 30.15 seconds, just ahead of Tony Hickey’s Jess in 31.75 seconds and Jodie Dowling with River in 32.14 seconds. The quickest dog over the Kelpie Dash course was Sally Henderson’s Jett in 4.97 seconds, just edging out Louise Hamilton’s Coco in five seconds and Tony Hickey’s Jess in 5.25 seconds. The winner of the Kelpie Country Street Parade was the Strathdownie Red Cross, Julie Hovey’s dog Flash won the Kelpie Idol competition and Steve Sudero’s had the best dog to win the kelpie pinball.

A key gateway to Mount Gambier is undergoing an image overhaul, with a new indigenous planting scheme starting to take root. The City of Mount Gambier and Natural Resources South East are working together to revegetate a prominent pocket of land adjacent to Penola Road in the city’s north. Volunteers and staff from the two organisations today began replacing unsightly weeds with a wide variety of plants that are native to the area. The newly-planted species have been raised by Eight Mile Creek company Mimosa Farm Trees and the Nature Glenelg Trust Community Nursery; and include correas, banksias, lomandras, running postman, muntries, pigface, pale flax-lily and various grasses. City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said groundcovers and shrubs had been chosen rather than trees, and plants had been selected for their hardiness, aesthetics, conservation status and useability.

“Indigenous plants can make great landscaping gardens, with the added benefits of being suited to the local climate and conditions, usually requiring less water and attention, and also providing other uses such as food or materials,” Mr Izzard said. “We’re looking forward to the site flourishing into a low-maintenance indigenous garden that is both visually appealing and practical.” The City of Mount Gambier hopes that the site will serve as a demonstration garden and anticipates that the rare and threatened species in particular, will become a convenient source of seed for the community nursery down the track. Above (from left) - Natalie Misic (Natural Resources SE), Loretta Oppelaar (Centacare), Aaron Izzard (City of Mount Gambier), Peter Feast (Mimosa Farm Trees), Kate Fife (City of Mount Gambier) and Alison Boomsma (Natural Resources SE).

Above - The Blue Lake Real Estate team celebrates its one year anniversary (from left) - Kathryn Weddell-Lucas, Stacey Johnston, Silvia Howlett, Aidan Weddell and Paul Cavanagh. Kathryn Weddell-Lucas is certainly not afraid of a challenge and 12 months since opening the doors of her own real estate agency, it is clear her determination to succeed has seen her rise to yet another challenge. Running her own business had always been a dream for Kathryn and in the end it was a case of necessity becoming the mother of invention. She was unfortunately made redundant at Fimmell’s First National on May 17 last year and by June 17 she had opened the doors of Blue Lake Real Estate. “I honestly wasn’t nervous at all,” Kathryn said of the bold move. And what started as a one woman show has quickly grown. “I was there by myself for this first month with my gorgeous mum answering the phone,” Kathryn said. Kathryn’s son Aidan joined the business in early July. Aidan is studying Business Administration as a school based traineeship. By mid July Stacey Johnston had joined the team, bringing with her 12 years in property management experience and then Paul Cavanagh with his decade of work in real estate sales. Silvia Howlett, who has more than a decade of experience in sales administration, joined the team in February this year. The girls had all worked together at Fimmell’s and that meant the team gelled from day one of all working together. “Because we’ve all worked together, it was really just like we were the same business just at a new address,” Kathryn said. That address is 44a Gray Street. “It’s amazing to think there are five of us now,” she said. What is also amazing is that Kathryn is a relative newcomer to the real estate game having started with Fimmell’s in October 2009 and now hanging her own shingle in town. “I love working with people and I really

love the job – real estate has been a good fit for me,” Kathryn said. “I worked in the State Valuation Office for 10 years prior to moving to Fimmell’s and this gave me a good understanding of the industry and local market.” Kathryn feels like she’s had one more huge advantage as she starts to build her name and that of Blue Lake Real Estate in the market place. “I came into the industry with it in a lull – I started in tough times and I just don’t know any different,” she said. Kathryn believes this has meant she has had to work hard from day one to sell properties and has learnt so much by never really having an easy sale. “Things are improving but I am glad I came into the industry when I did,” she said. “It makes you work harder, it makes you realise what it takes to sell a property.” Kathryn was also grateful for the mentoring she received from Fimmell’s Peter Duffy and Christopher Ekert. “They made the transition relatively easy for me,” she said. At the moment Blue Lake Real Estate is averaging a sale every one and a half weeks and Kathryn is pleased with how things are going. While her focus is certainly Mount Gambier and surrounds, Blue Lake Real Estate has sold properties in Nangwarry, Mt Burr, Millicent and Port MacDonnell. “While things do feel like they’re improving there is definitely no room for complacency,” Kathryn said. “We pride ourselves on working hard for every client, whether it’s a vendor looking to sell or a buyer looking for that perfect property – it is a real team effort, we bring all our experience together to achieve the best results.” Kathryn and the team at Blue Lake Real Estate would like to extend their sincere thanks to all who have helped to make their first year a success.

local story PORTLAND MEDICAL ERVICES EXPANDED More Portland women will be able to have their babies locally with the recruitment of a new obstetrician and gynaecologist. Dr David Morris will join Portland District Health from July 2, easing pressure on the existing service and creating more opportunities for local births. The recruitment will also lead to fewer gaps in the Portland-based service. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the addition of Dr Morris was a great outcome for local families. “It will allow us to provide a more complete service to the community,” Ms Giles said. “We have been working hard to attract and relocate more specialist staff to Portland and we are very pleased that Dr Morris will be joining us.” Dr Morris, a Fellow of the Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, will join Drs Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad who are continuing their involvement in the obstetrics service. The recruitment is also supported by the appointment of Dr Scott Deller who has recently joined Active Health Portland as a general practitioner and PDH where his role will include anaesthetics. Dr Morris will bring a wealth of experience to Portland. He most recently worked in Bendigo and Western Australia and was previously based at Horsham among other regional postings. Ms Giles said the addition of a third specialist with expertise in obstetrics would allow the hospital to increase its birthing service. “We will be able to establish a low to medium risk service and be able to provide safe birthing facilities for firsttime mothers,” she said. Over recent years first time mothers have needed to travel to Warrnambool or Hamilton to give birth. “We will be able to provide a more complete continuous service and be better placed to cover leave or emergency situations,” she said. “Australia is experiencing a nation-wide shortage of obstetricians and gynaecologists, particularly in rural areas where many services have been scaled down or closed. “We are fortunate to be able to increase our local options,” Ms Giles said. “We need to encourage our local GP workforce to help us to provide these vital services by up-skilling in these areas.” There have been 16 births so far this year at PDH, slightly up on the same period last year.

LOCAL Safety The 53 landslides, identified on the cliff top adjacent to Nuns Beach after heavy rain last year, are still active and could cause life-threatening injuries at any time. This was the reality presented by A.S. Miner Geotechnical (ASMG) Geotechnical Engineer Tony Miner when he spoke to about 50 people during a number of information sessions earlier this month. The group was mostly made up of property owners living in nearby area, who

message embraced by Portland public attended sessions in groups of between eight and 12 across the day, but also included passers-by and users of the area. The information was the next of a series of steps being undertaken by Glenelg Shire Council and Department of Environment and Primary Industry (DEPI) in regards to this section of coastline. Portland experienced heavy and prolonged periods of rainfall during 2013, corresponding with significant landslide activity on the section

of coast between Nuns Beach and Anderson Point in Portland. As a result, a number of paths and tracks were impacted and concerns for public safety were expressed. Mr Miner, who has been involved in the risk assessment of the area since day one, said there were eight different types of landslides present at Nuns Beach, with the rock size ranging from one cubic metre up to 600 cubic metres. “The message we want to get out is that we have determined the risks in this area as unacceptable and this hasn’t changed – there is still activity and rocks are still falling,” he said. “A landslide could occur at any time especially when the rain increases during winter and if this happens it has potential to cause death - it’s about how much risk people are willing to accept. “Our primary objective is the safety of the public and to do this we have to look at the options of either managing and mitigating the hazard or taking the things we care about away from the risk.” Mr Miner presented three short walking inspections of the Nuns Beach area as well as providing information during the six hour drop in period from 10am to 4pm. The next stage involves working through the

options proposed for the area, including community consultation on each of the proposals, and to seek funding options. Majority of people who attended

the sessions, signed up to receive email updates on progress on this issue. If you’d like further information or wish to receive further updates on the Cliff area

as they become available, please contact Assets and Infrastructure Acting Senior Administration Officer Paige Kliese on (03)5522 2520 or pkliese@glenelg.vic.gov.au.

LOCAL Rotary A $5000 donation from the Rotary Club of Hamilton North has boosted STAY Residential Services’ community appeal. The club recently presented STAY CEO Maree Sandford with the much-needed lift for the appeal which seeks to raise $100,000 from the

windfall for community service community. The Rotary club is also encouraging other groups and individuals in the community to get behind the appeal. Club president Jennifer Barke said STAY’s programs served an important purpose. “STAY is very much needed by some people in our community

and their families. Rotary is all about giving a helping hand where it is truly needed.” she said. Ms Sandford had spoken to the club about STAY’s $100,000 relocation community appeal to renovate its new head office and activities centre

at 46 Brown Street. The presentation has encouraged Mrs Barke to urge others in the community to get behind the appeal. “Absolutely, we are encouraging others to support this fundraising,” she said. “STAY provides a very importance service and is clearly a very good organisation worthy of local support.” STAY provides services for people with disabilities. Local philanthropist Geoff Handbury donated $50,000 to kick-start the appeal but nearly $80,000 is still needed to complete the work. CEO Maree Sandford said the appeal was part of a new era for STAY to help clients to achieve their full potential. “Demand for our services has increased so much that we have no other option but to relocate,” Ms Sandford said. “We welcome and appreciate the support offered by the Rotary Club of Hamilton North and will keep working with the community to provide the best possible services for our clients.” Ms Sandford said the new centre would mean more opportunities for activities and work experience, more interaction with the community and other service providers for clients. STAY supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY residential homes, provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community.

ADVERTORIAL I MOUNT GAMBIER PRIVATE HOSPITAL No one wants to have to spend time in hospital but if you do need to be admitted, your stay can certainly be a lot more comfortable if you take advantage of the Mount Gambier Private Hospital. From more comfortable beds

to free local phone calls and a free daily newspaper, from large single private rooms to a more extensive menu including beer and wine, the Mount Gambier Private Hospital is all about making your stay as comfortable as

possible, offering all the creature comforts of home and then some. And while TV access costs in the public sector, free to air television channels are provided free in your private room. The Mount Gambier Private Hospital will waive

Quality treatment in a home away from home up to $250 of your excess or co-payment on your private health policy and offers the right to choose your own medical officer. Veterans affairs and other compensable clients can access shared accommodation with the private

hospital offers private patient only services including oral maxillary surgery, Sports-Med orthopaedic services, obesity surgery and elective circumcision of male infants. To access the Mount Gambier Private Hospital there must

be a bed available and you must have a medical officer to accept you as a Private Patient. That medical officer must also have private hospital admitting privileges and the good news is several GPs within Mount Gambier have

admitting privileges and so it may well be possible to have your care provided by your own GP. The Mount Gambier Private Hospital also welcomes any GP interested in applying for admitting privileges so hopefully the list of eligible admitting medical officers will only increase. The Mount Gambier Private Hospital also has a strong community connection, ensuring profits from the hospital are reinvested back into the hospital itself to ensure even further services and benefits for future clients. . For example, the Mount Gambier Private Hospital as purchased a new operating table for the theatre suite, surgical instruments for their surgeons and a fleet of superior beds. This is equipment which otherwise may not have been possible to obtain.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Too many freaks by Robbie Tansel Donna and I decided to take Shaquille to the circus last week. Largely we based this decision on the fact that with carnie folk in town, there was a good chance we might also encounter gypsies, and we wanted to see if they were interested in buying a two year old. Unfortunately we had no success in this endeavour but I was left with the usual thought that circuses leave me with. The ratio of freaks to circuses is totally out of whack in Australia. As in, there are too many freaks and not enough circuses. In the old days circuses would regularly come to your town, put on a few shows, round up your freaks and then head to the next town. Your town would be left freak free in the short term. By the next time the circus arrived in town you may have identified some more freaks and once again they’d sort that out for you. Now I’ll be the first to admit that it would be pretty difficult for the circuses to clear the freaks off our streets and out of our shopping centres these days. In that case the ratio of freaks would be pretty messy in the

other direction. We’d have thousands and thousands of circuses criss crossing their way across the country with just a few hundred people in each town sitting through the show. I don’t want to make it sound like I don’t respect the skills of the circus freaks. Let me be clear that they are particularly talented freaks. They put on a show that is certainly worth spending some cash to have a look at. On the other hand, I couldn’t help thinking that you only end up in the circus as a back up option when you’re not successful doing what you really wanted to do.For example they had some particularly impressive young ladies doing contortionist acts. For those of you not familiar with what a contortionist is, it’s essentially a young lady doing origami with their body. These young ladies were also skilled at swinging, twirling and flipping around up in the air. But I couldn’t fight the feeling that they’d rather be in Cirque du Soleil. Admittedly they haven’t reached rock bottom which surely involves a pole, dollar

bills and the string on the guitar you use to make the “g” note. Likewise surely the animal trainer would rather be training animals for the glamorous world of Hollywood blockbusters, rather than trying to get farm animals to stand on a block or slide down slippery dips. That’s got to be just about rock bottom for an animal trainer. While we’re talking about training animals, what happened to the exotic animals? Not a lion, tiger, elephant or whale in sight. I know the world has gone all politically correct and everything but there’s something pretty underwhelming about watching a cow who’s only real talent seems to be pooping. I’m not sure if it had been trained to do that or not mind you. Certainly not as spectacular as a lion jumping through a flaming hoop, is it? Even the ringmaster brought out feelings of sympathy in me. Granted he must have one of the best collections of sequined jackets in the world. Every time he introduced the next act he had a new sparkly suit on. But surely

growing up his dream was to host a game show. As if I didn’t already feel sorry enough for the circus folk, I started reflecting on Tony Abbot’s plan to increase the pension age to seventy. There are probably not too many vocations that are going to be more challenging for someone in their late sixties than circus performer. Twenty to thirty year old young lady turning herself inside out in skimpy outfit: kind of sexy. Sixty to seventy year old lady turning herself inside out in skimpy outfit: kind of disturbing. Something tells me the knife throwing will be much more entertaining though. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you’d like to dob a friend in to join the circus I’m planning to establish to clean the streets of Mount Gambier up a bit.

Singular Impressions surveys Melbourne artist, Wayne Viney’s responses to landscape over the past thirty years. Best known for his hauntingly evocative twilight studies, Viney masterfully draws upon the painterly potential of monotypes in his exploration of the pastoral tradition. This exhibition maps his transition from gestural drawings grounded in physical sites such as the Strathbogie Ranges and Yea, to his signature brooding monotypes of psychic landscapes, to recent colourband abstractions. Whether depicting the observed countryside of the Australian bush, or giving expression to the private vistas of an imagined scene, Viney imbues his images with a mood that is achingly sublime.

The event was first established in July 2004 to showcase the region during the winter months and highlight the superb aging ability of Coonawarra wines. The event is the first of its kind in Australia and the only opportunity for visitors to indulge in aged, special release and back vintage wines throughout the region, right in our cellar doors. With 10 special events held over the four weekends in July, two wine trails to follow and more than 20 wineries dusting off some exceptional cellared treasures, planning a long weekend in Coonawarra during July should be mandatory for all true wine lovers. “It is my pleasure to formally announce that the Coonawarra Cellar Dwellers 10th Anniversary Program has been released,” said Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated marketing and events manager Renee Harrison. “It is available on our website and

will be sent to Tourism Information Centres throughout Australia.” This year’s program boasts some fantastic new events as well as some beloved favourites. The region is spectacular during the winter months with sparkling morning frosts, lush green fields, woolly headed sheep and a cool average temperature of 9.8C. It’s the perfect time of year to get cosy with a crackling fireplace and a glass of wine straight from the cellar door. “This event has become a major voice in promoting tourism to South Australia over the last 10 years,” said Renee Harrison. “Being that it is the only event of its kind, people travel from all around the country to visit our beautiful

LOCAL NBN

rollout kicks off

The Abbott Government’s efforts to speed up the NBN rollout are paying off for residents and businesses in Barker as the National Broadband Network officially switched on Fixed Wireless services to five communities last week. The first Fixed Wireless towers in South Australia are now online providing high speed internet capability to the surrounding districts of Tailem Bend, Meningie,

Coonalpyn, Tintinara and Naracoorte. This marks the first ‘switch on’ of fixed wireless technology anywhere in regional South Australia. Today is a landmark day for the future of telecommunications and internet connectivity in South Australia but more importantly in Barker,” Member for Barker, Tony Pasin said. “The rollout is happening faster than

ever since the Coalition Government took office. This reinforces the Government’s commitment to prioritise areas that have been severely disadvantaged by the lack of connectivity,” Mr Pasin said. The Government’s changes to the NBN rollout will save $32 billion and will see upgrades delivered four years sooner than under Labor. Currently a further twelve Fixed

Wireless towers are under construction across Barker. “It is important that families and businesses have access to these services which have become such an important part of our day to day life” Mr Pasin said. Detailed maps showing the communities where services are available or construction has begun are available at www.nbnco.com.au/ rollout/rollout-map.
