LOCAL Successful Mount Gambier’s RSL Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band returned to competition this year attending the South Australian Pipe Band competition at Mount

return to competition

Barker in the Adelaide Hills. It brough some surprising results, finishing in first place in the Grade 4 mini band competition and second in the Grade 4 full

band competition. Even though this was a small competition in the scheme of things, the results were still very pleasing and put the Band, the RSL and

the City of Mount Gambier on the South Australian piping map. The band has not competed in South Australia for 40 years.

LOCAL Road

Blue Lake Highland Pipe Band and the Naracoorte Highland Pipe Band have combined for competition purposes still retaining

their identities for local functions. The band hopes to attend more competitions and tattoos but needs more piping

and drumming learners. Interested persons can contact Barry Ward in Mount Gambier or Don Patterson in Naracoorte.

upgrade on the horizon

Highly anticipated upgrades to Devlins Road and Heathmere Siding Road are expected to be completed this financial year after Glenelg Shire Council reached a long sought

agreement with Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) this week. Both project sites have roadside vegetation that could not be removed prior to sourcing a compensatory

environmental offset and this had resulted in extended delays to planned works. Construction of the first 500m of Devlins Road was completed in 2010 as this section was not subject

to the removal of any native vegetation. However, the native vegetation required to be removed at the northern end of Devlins Road was assessed as having “Very High Conservation Significance”, with the relevant Planning Permit condition stating that a native vegetation offset must be secured prior to work starting. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said it was exciting to see this necessary upgrade work finally able to be started.“Construction was not able to legally occur until a property was volunteered through the Bush Broker program as an offset site,” he said. “This has now been achieved and Council staff have set up a regular teleconference meeting time with DEPI staff and the offset credit holder to ensure that all parties are kept up to date with the Bush Broker process and the construction process. “It is anticipated that vegetation identification and exclusions zones will be identified and implemented within two weeks and at that time construction should start. “This will allow for the projects to be completed this financial year, subject to weather and other environmental factors.” The work is being completed through funding made available as part of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery program.

COVER Baking This Easter, bakers at the Bakers Delight Mount Gambier bakeries will be busier than ever baking thousands of Hot Cross Buns. Across Australia, more than 304 tonnes of sultanas and 140 tonnes of choc chips will be used to bake Hot Cross Buns this year. With Traditional, Choc Chip, Mocha and Fruitless Hot Cross Buns being baked, there is plenty of choice for everyone. Among Mount Gambier’s locals, Traditional is the best-selling Hot Cross Bun, with Choc Chip second

for a cause - arguably the ‘kids choice’! Andrew Toogood, franchisee of Commercial Street, and Mark and Amanda Jensen, franchisees of James Street, are both active supporters of the local community. Between the two franchisees, they support several primary and secondary schools with product donations for breakfast clubs and fundraisers, conduct ‘Bun Drive’ fundraisers with schools and kindergartens, and provide leftover product to regional Foodbank centres. Bakers Delight held

its annual fundraiser, known as ‘Bundraiser Day’ for children’s hospitals across the country on April 5. All South Australian bakeries rallied together to raise $10,000 for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation, donating $1 from every six pack of Hot Cross Buns sold. Money raised will support the purchase of a neonatal hearing screening unit. Andrew has been franchisee at Commercial Street for almost three years after learning his craft from Mark at James Street, where Mark has been franchisee for more than 20 years. Both bakeries will be open every day throughout the Easter period and will have fresh baked hot Cross Buns from 5am. award entries open

In June, the Casterton based Artists of the Valley Inc. will again honour the memory of artist Clarice Beckett, by offering

established and emerging artists the opportunity to enter their work. In its third year, the annual award will feature artwork across seven

categories, including newly instated sections for artists working in three dimensional mediums, as well from the youth

community. Each year, the award draws entries from the youth sector, but until now they have not had their own category. Artists of the Valley president Glad Laslett said this year, they were excited to be offering an increase in sections and prize money, aside from the overall winner’s award. “For the first time, younger up and coming artists will be judged against their peers, and rewarded for their effort,” she said. “An increase in sponsors for the Clarice Beckett Art Award means we can offer more prizes, and we’re thrilled to be able to encourage our younger artists.” Encouragement for emerging artists is very different today from what it was in Clarice Beckett’s time. Born in Casterton, Victoria in 1887, Beckett knew what it was to

struggle for recognition in her chosen field of artistic endeavour. She was an accomplished draughtswoman and portraitist. Her passion, though, was for plein air landscapes in her own distinctive style. Studying under Frederick McCubbin and being mentored by Max Meldrum gave Clarice Beckett little advantage. Being considered politically incorrect for the times, Beckett’s work was largely ignored in her own lifetime. She gained little recognition or respected as an artist until after her death. Ridiculed by her peers and critics during her career, she persisted with her evocative style of painting everyday scenes,

only later to be known as Australian Tonalism. Beckett declared her task as being “to give a sincere and truthful representation of a portion of the beauty of nature, and to show the charm of light and shade ... in correct tones so as to give as nearly as possible an exact illusion of beauty.” Remaining true to her artistic integrity, Beckett produced over 2,000 landscapes from 1917 until her premature death in 1935. Sadly, few remain. After her death, 1200 of her paintings were left to rot for 40 years in an open-sided barn, with few salvageable, and another

31 were destroyed in a house fire. The Clarice Beckett Art Award provides today’s artists the chance of remaining true to, and being acknowledged for their own artistic integrity. Exhibition of entries will be held at the Casterton Bowling Club over the Queen’s Birthday weekend in tandem with the Casterton Kelpie Muster. at the theatre Dragon – The Trilogy Concert SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE, MOUNT GAMBIER (May 2) LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE, WARRNAMBOOL (May 3) Unlike many bands, there are three distinct ages that define the evolution of iconic rock band Dragon. The eras represent the rites of passage that have made the band and its music what it is today, carving out a special place in the popular music history of Australia and New Zealand. Now, for the first time, Dragon is hitting the road to celebrate these three ages with their special Dragon – The Trilogy Concert tour, which will see them performing in metro and regional centres over a few months in early 2014. The band celebrated their 500th show of the Phoenix Years in July 2013 and has no plans to stop. Let the music continue.

LOCAL Cheetham Soprano, composer and academic Deborah Cheetham has performed in concert halls around the world

relishes time in Glenelg Shire

but she says one of her greatest privileges is helping young indigenous students, like those she is working with in Glenelg

Shire this week, reach their potential. About 10 of Glenelg Shire’s junior stars-of-thefuture, ranging in age

from five to 15, have spent the first week of their school holidays working on their singing and composing skills with Ms Cheetham and her team from Short Black Opera Company. Ms Cheetham is currently Head of the Wilin Centre at the University of Melbourne, which has also conducted a film and television course for secondary school students in Glenelg Shire this week. Both the film and television and singing groups will perform live at Portland Arts Centre this Friday before their final performance at the Glenelg Shire Reconciliation Week celebration on May 30, at which Ms Cheetham is also a guest speaker. As director of Short Black Opera Company,

a national not-for-profit opera company devoted to the development of Indigenous opera singers, Ms Cheetham developed the Short Black Opera Company for Kids Program to give guidance to young

people in the community. A proud Yorta Yorta woman and niece of acclaimed Australian Aboriginal musician, actor and teacher Jimmy Little, Ms Cheetham was one of the earliest indigenous opera singers to make a name for themselves on the Australian music scene. “There is no time in my life where I can’t recall not singing,” she said. “I use my voice when I’m teaching a song because I like to demonstrate what their voice might become. “We can see these students are desperate to learn because they have given up their holidays to

be here.” Ms Cheetham said she spent the first part of this week explaining the intense process of putting together a song before leading students to create their own original piece. “When I compose an opera, I work slowly… it’s a very important process for me,” she said. “First I play it on the piano, then I write the words by hand and then I put the words into the computer. “I have asked the students to tell me what’s important to them and they have said words like ‘culture, belonging, family and love’… the sense of belonging is critical to their happiness. “They have all drawn pictures about what these words mean to them. “It’s all part of the process and it’s about comprehension and understanding the words as well. “Then we have put the words to music.” This is Ms Cheetham’s fourth trip to Portland, allowing her to build on skills taught in previous years. “Portland compares really favourably to other places I have taught… the people really value their arts and the Arts Centre has such a diverse arts program.” In April 2007 Ms Cheetham was awarded a Fellowship to create Australia’s first Indigenous opera, Pecan Summer. Ms Cheetham was also a finalist for 2010 Australian of the Year in Victoria.

FEATURE Autumn

OPEN 7 DAYS

Autumn is by far the best season to spend time in the garden in the Limestone Coast. The sun has lost the sting of summer and the mornings are crisp. The wind is generally lighter and the soil is still warm, creating a great environment for planting. Shrubs, natives, evergreen trees, berries and citrus all benefit from being planted or transplanted now. Roots grow quickly in the warm soil and help to establish plants before the cold of winter. This is also a good time to cut down herbaceous perennials as they finish. Choose a cool day and divide if necessary to rejuvenate the clumps and deadhead roses for a final flush of flowers. If you want to plant some new ones in winter look around now while they are still in flower before making your final choice. There are many new releases each season and this year is no different.

FEATURE Six Six easy decor makeovers If your home is in need of a shake-up but you don’t have the time or the money to re-do the room quite as you’d like to, there are several ways you can make a change. Check out these quick, easy and inexpeansive ways you can change the look of your home. Add plants Mixing greenery with your existing furniture

Lifestyle1.net - 024

is the perfect time to garden

Visit McCourts Garden Centre for information and preorders for winter roses. Vegetables that can be planted now include broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, silver beet, spinach, onions and leeks. Herbs including parsley, thyme, rosemary and chives are happy to be planted out in Autumn. Cinerarias, poppies, polyanthus, violas, pansies, snapdragons, primulas and spring flowering bulbs will bring colour to your garden in late winter and spring. Citrus can be selected and planted now and the choice is huge. Lemons including Meyer, Lisbon, Eureka and Lemonade varieties and oranges such as Washington Navels and Valencias are all favourites for the home gardener whilst Tahitian limes, Kaffir limes, mandarins and cumquats are increasingly popular. The introduction of dwarf varieties has meant

that container citrus have become patio favourites. Citrus looks fantastic in terracotta pots or in antique terracotta as well as earthy, textured designs. Having them in pots in the patio also means they are convenient for cooking. Meyer lemons grow very well in our climate and are actually a cross between a lemon and an orange. Their pith is thinner and they are extremely juicy, perfect for homemade lemonade. They are prolific bearers of fruit mainly in spring and summer but you could find your tree bears all year round. Lisbon lemon trees are hardy and will tolerate our cool winters. Their pith is a lot thicker than the Meyer lemon which gives them long lasting quality and their flavour is very tangy. For citrus generally you should find the sunniest spot in the garden as they grow best in full sun and also

prefer to be protected from cold winds. Eureka lemons are similar to Lisbons but prefer a warmer climate so is often recommended for coastal areas. It produces fruit nearly every day of the year. It has fewer thorns and relatively fewer seeds and grows to around four metres eventually. The fruit from the Lemonade lemon tree can be eaten straight from the tree like an orange or a mandarin. It’s a lot sweeter with a refreshing tang generally ripening mid- winter. It is a cross between a mandarin and lemon. Get the squeeze on citrus at McCourts Garden centre this Easter where the horticulturally trained staff can help you with your citrus queries and where you will find a huge variety of citrus including advanced trees, double grafts and dwarf varieties.

easy makeover ideas can give your house a brand new look and feel. Reupholster Are you sick of the pattern on your chairs or couch? Head to a fabric store like Spotlight to buy a new fabric that you love and reupholster it yourself or take it to a professional. It’s much cheaper than forking out for new furniture. Go vintage Check Gumtree or the schedule for local council clean ups in your area to

find older furniture that can be cleaned up and bring new life to your home for next to no cost at all. Rearrange your furniture If space allows, pull everything out of the room you want to update. This will give you a clearer indication of where you’d like things to go, rather than trying to squeeze things in where they’ll fit. Then go rearranging crazy! Focus on things small but bright Adding new pillows, vases, a throw or a statement piece (such as a chandelier) will help to liven up your space. Get rid of items in patterns that don’t fit in or look cluttered. The cleaner

the space the more your coloured items will pop. Purge Often the best way to change the look of your home is to get rid of the clutter. If you’ve been in one place for more than a year or two, odds are you’ve acquired quite a bit of stuff – and probably quite a lot of junk. Eliminating this clutter can create a clean space that looks completely different to what it used to.

FEATURE A

new team for a new era

Yes, it’s that time of year again when Easter Bunny is about to visit and that of course can only mean two things - chocolate and massive clearance sale time at Gardenarium. With that little bit of rain in the past few weeks it seems a little bit autumny again and the nights are certainly getting a little crisper - a great time for planting. This year Easter is a little earlier, so some of

our Autumn foliage trees and plants will not be in full splendour but on the flip side the roses last year at our Easter Open Weekend were nearly finished. This Easter weekend we are again having our massive rose clearance sale and Awesome Autumn Trees sale to make room for renovations. The roses are looking fantastic

after a later than normal summer prune after all the hot weather and we are clearing all of the roses in our rose growing area to make room for a further expansion to our Advanced Trees section and this can only mean one thing - bargains all round. Yes, all of our roses, in bush, standard, weeping, groundcovers, David Austins, Delbards

etc will be up to 50% off, with $5 bush roses and $10 standard roses to clear. Autumn is a great time for planting as the ground is still warm and you will get some amazing growth but the main factor is that the plants will be well settled in for next spring. The other great bonus of course is that you will have a year older rose, with much more branching framework and of course masses of blooms right now. Plus you can see what you are buying in terms of rose blooms and their colours as opposed to winter when they are dormant. From Anzac Day until Sunday, April 27, we will have THE RSL ROSEs for sale in full bloom to plant now to remember our diggers and many of the 2013 new release rose varieties will also be on show and for sale in the long weekend clearance. Nowadays more and more of our roses raise money for charity and these will be on display

this weekend also. This weekend we will also be showcasing the 2014 upcoming new release varieties which need to be ordered this weekend to avoid missing out. Many of the new releases especially the David Austin rose Princess Anne, the Daniel Morcombe Rose, which was officially launched last Wednesday on television and a couple of the Delbard Roses, Pink Intuition and Blue Emotion that were featured at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show and again on Better Homes and Gardens have been hugely popular and are already heavily ordered. A mail order customer advised us that we are the only distributor left in Australia with Blue Emotion still for sale. Our website has nearly crashed a couple of times over the past few weeks and the phone has not stopped since Wednesday’s launch of the Daniel Morcombe Rose. In many cases we

will be sold out well before they are even dug from the paddock, so we urge local customers to order now as most of our roses go to Queensland and New South Wales. The Wedding Rose and Golden Jubilee are also grabbing a lot of attention , so be sure to get your orders in for these varieties as soon as possible. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees will also be having a massive tree sale from Easter Saturday through to Easter Monday so bring your trailer, truck, horse float whatever you like and grab a bargain. Most of the advanced trees in our Limestone Coast Advanced Trees section of the business will be reduced to clear with up to 50% off and more on clearance trees, fruit trees and citrus and $10, $15 and $20 tree specials .This will make more room for a whole new area of trees, where we aim to hold more of our stock, rather than bringing it in from our growing field. This means

there will be more trees on hand and will cater better for our growing demand for our trees and fruit trees. We have already started expanding the evergreen advanced tree section and aim to widen the pathways making browsing and choosing a little easier. We don’t do “empty” very well here as many will know but it has been hard squeezing all of our huge stock in to the sales area. The Pot Shop part of the business has been busy receiving container loads of glazed, terracotta, sandstone and concrete pots over the past few months and we also need to clear some of those to make more room for more pots, trees and outdoor furniture. Some of the terracotta which is all now pre sealed , so it doesn’t dry out like the old terracotta has been so drastically reduced and with the strength of the Aussie dollar is now cheaper than buying plastic pots. So, come in and browse through the extensive range and pick up a bargain. There will also be $2, $5 and $10 pot specials. Much of our giftware, wall art and fountains will also be on clearance, as well as birdhouses, dovecotes etc. as we make way for the opening of our New Gift shop area, which just may be finished in time for the Anzac Weekend festivities. We will be closed Good Friday but open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5 pm and Easter Monday 10am to 4pm, and all through the week including all day Anzac Day .We are situated on Bay Road (Riddoch Highway) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout, so we’ll look forward to seeing you then. new team for a new era

Eckermann Steinert Conveyancers has a new look team heading into 2014 with co-owner and Director Brad Eckermann set to be spending the majority of his time based in the Mount Gambier office, working alongside new recruit Andrea Mardon, who many clients have already worked with

after she joined the firm late last year. With both long time Conveyancers Emma Baxter and Graham Stoodley, whose business was sold to the Eckermann Steinert group last year, both moving on to pursue new avenues – Emma a career outside the conveyancing field and Graham, to a

well-earned retirement – Andrea has been a welcome addition to the Eckermann Steinert team. She has learnt a large amount from Graham and Emma over the past six months and has recently moved into a file management role and is handling this exceptionally well. “I’m sure our clients will get

to experience Andrea’s prompt, friendly and professional service very soon,” Brad said. Andrea can be contacted on (08)8725 0833 or andrea@esconveyanc ers.com.au. “We wish Emma all the best for her future and look forward to Andrea continuing to develop in her role with us,” Brad said. He was also full of praise for the more than four decades of experience and previous clients Graham Stoodley had brought to the business after selling to Eckermann Steinert Conveyancers early in 2013 . “His retirement probably won’t come as a surprise after he sold his business to us last year,” Brad said. “Graham will be greatly missed by us at Eckermann Steinert Conveyancers and I’m sure all of the agents and bankers in Mount Gambier. We thank Graham for giving over 15 months to our business to assist with the transition from his business to ours.” Graham finishes up on April 24 and Shirley and Sally, from the Naracoorte office, will also be available to assist if the work load in Mount Gambier requires. Sonya Jones has also recently joined the Mount Gambier office and will bring a great deal of experience from her Banking and Administration background. “I wish to thank everyone for their support of Eckermann Steinert Conveyancers after we purchased Graham’s business last year and we look forward to continuing to provide professional conveyancing services to all our clients,” Brad said. 10 Things that Date Your Home Floral curtains Commonly loved by older generations, floral curtains are a big culprit when it comes to a dated look. Single light coloured curtains are the best choice because they won’t clash with any other patterns or themes in a room and they will help make your space look bigger. Animal ornaments Anything ceramic or china in the shape of an animal is definitely going to date your decor. Part ways with your beloved ornaments to help

make your home look more modern and sleek. Clashing prints Rooms with too many types of prints and themes look as though they’re straight from the 80’s. Keep big items like walls and lounge suites neutral in colour; stick to mixing prints through your cushions and throws. Bright wallpaper Bright and busy wallpaper can make a space appear much smaller than it is and you end up limiting yourself when it comes to decorating. Try neutral walls and if you really want to include some colour, opt for a feature wall or coloured homewares. Colour in the wrong places There was once a time when everyone wanted an avocado-coloured bathroom suite. Though ‘hip’ at the time, these days an avocado bathroom would be considered daggy. Don’t go for an ‘out there’ colour in places like your bathroom or kitchen as these colour trends tend to fade pretty fast.

Pansies

Lifestyle1.net - 030

Heavily patterned furniture Like bright wallpaper and curtains, heavily patterned furniture can make your home look dated and busy, especially as prints and patterns go in and out of fashion constantly. Deciding on a neutral shade means you don’t need to worry about adding colour injections in other areas of the room and later realising they don’t match your couch. Carpet in the bathroom Though a big trend in the United Kingdom (in cold weather a warm surface underfoot is a luxurious treat), carpeted bathrooms are a fast way to ensure your bathroom looks daggy and unclean in Australia’s hot climate. Not to mention the potential for mould growth. A bar Having a fully stocked bar in your house is very typical of the 90’s. These days it seems a little dated, especially when people are generally opting to follow a healthier lifestyle. Matching colours Rooms that are too ‘matchy matchy’ can look obviously dated. The bed linen doesn’t have to match the carpet and the drapes, especially if they’re a bright colour that’s overbearing in large quantities. Remember, everything in moderation, including colours. Toilet rugs Remember these? They provided a similar issue for potential mould as having carpet in the bathroom. The minute a toilet rug is added, a chic bathroom starts to look like something from Happy Days.
