Rotary Photographic Art Show Open to the public April 11 - 21 Millicent Civic and Art Centre See page 3 for details
exhibition not to be missed
Photographers from all areas of South Australia and Western Victoria have entered this year’s Rotary Photographic Art Show. With more than 230 entries the quality of the photography once again has improved and all augurs well for an exceptional exhibition. Well worth visiting Millicent for a look. Many of last year’s entrants are back but it is rewarding to note that there are many new entrants offering a fresh perspective. It is pleasing to see a large increase in the under 19 category and all seven categories have been well supported. Once again
there has been an increase in photographers from the Wattle Range Council area and these entries are also eligible for the Regional Photographer award in memory of Don Ferguson, former Wattle Range Mayor. The Peter Rapp Youth Incentive Award, will again be awarded to a young photographer who shows promise. Total prize money of $6500 has ensured the Rotary Photographic Art Show is one of significance and is recognised nationally. Building on the success of the previous four exhibitions, sponsors Infigen Energy, KimberlyClark Australia, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Wattle
Range Council and local firm Thompson Drilling have all continued to be major sponsors, with Atkins Technicolour from Adelaide, Hurst Camera House of Mount Gambier, local firms Fosters Foodland, Hamilton Hateley and Associates and Lonergan and Muhovics also sponsoring. With the overwhelming success of the past four years, the event is proving to be very attractive to both professional and amateur photographers, raising their profile and that of photography. In 2013 some of the amateur photographers
who entered excelled and reflected the very high standard of photography that is in the community today, skills that are maturing and developing with each year of the competition. The exhibition will officially open on Friday, April 11, at 7.30pm. Mayor Gandolfi will present the Mayoral Award and has commended the Rotary Club of Millicent on this exciting initiative ensuring that Millicent has a month of festivals and exhibitions – March into April! The 2014 photographic exhibition will run through to April 21 and will be closed on Good Friday. All photographic artwork is for sale throughout the viewing period. A professional wedding and portrait photographer from Adelaide will run a “Portraiture” workshop using natural light on Sunday, April 6. Local photographer Steve Chapple will hold a “Portraiture” workshop using strobes, flash, studio lighting and natural light on Sunday, April 13, limited to 10 people, the cost $100 (bookings to Steve on 0409 082 163). An “Industrial Grunge” workshop will be run on Saturday, April 12, by Adelaide Hills
photographer Jim Filmer of Filmertography, the venue for this will be the Old Mount Burr Mill, and offers an opportunity to use an area that is not generally open to the public. Models will be provided at all workshops. For bookings
and further information www.rotarymillicent.o rg.au or enquiries can be made through Mary Altschwager phone 0407 331 147. Tickets to the opening are also available from the same contacts.

LOCAL Scholarship A Colac apprentice will work in Europe for two years after winning an Australian Overseas Foundation Incolink scholarship. Troy Young hopes to work in building and construction in Germany after being named as one of only five scholarship winners from across Australia. Mr Young, 23, is a carpenter-builder with BDH Constructions and completed his apprenticeship through Westvic Staffing Solutions’ Group Training service in Colac. The scholarship provided by Incolink will support Mr Young with travel and accommodation costs and visa arrangements, and assist in obtaining employment and work visas, and attending specialised training trade and industry forums. He expects to leave later this year but details of the trip are yet to be finalised. “I am still in the process of organising it, but from seeing `Grand Designs’, Germany seems to be architecturally very advanced so I would like to go there,” Mr Young said. “It will be a whole new learning experience for me, like starting my apprenticeship again,” he said. Mr Young will get the opportunity to travel and

work overseas, meet people in a foreign country and learn about their customs and lifestyle. He will also learn the different building practices and methods that are used in Europe during the two-year scholarship. He said building was something he always wanted to do. His career started with a two-year schoolbased apprenticeship at Colac Secondary College where he successfully completed Year 12. He was then employed as an apprentice by Westvic Staffing Solutions with BDH as his host employer while he successfully completed a Certificate III in Carpentry through South West TAFE. Group training field officer at Westvic Staffing Solutions, Dale Gaylard, said he was impressed by Mr Young’s leadership skills, interest in learning and dedication to performing his duties with a minimum of fuss. “One of Troy’s greatest assets is his personality,” he said. Mr Young previously won a Westvic Staffing Solutions excellence award for the Colac region as a schoolbased apprentice in 2009. Mr Young travelled to Las Vegas for his 21st birthday but has never been to
Europe. “I have caught the travel bug so this will be a great opportunity for me,” he said. “It was a big application process but I was very shocked and excited to win the scholarship.” Mr Young sees his career continuing in building. “I am very happy with what I am doing and the support from BDH and Westvic was great for me. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be where I am now,” he said. The Australian Overseas Foundation provides scholarships to travel and work overseas for Australians between the ages of 21 and 31 who have completed a trade apprenticeship or vocational traineeship to Certificate Level Three.

which is transformed into a venue for a fine dining experience. Special guest speakers are set to amuse, and diners will be entertained by talented musicians from the Academy at the Tenison Woods College. There will be complimentary bus leaving the Mount Gambier Library Carpark at 6.45pm and departing the Airport at approximately 11.30pm. The cost of $90 per person includes a three course dinner, entertainment, and the bus, while there will be a licensed bar available with beer, wine and non-
alcoholic drinks. The dinner will be limited to a maximum of 100 diners, with tables of 10 available. Book as an individual or organize a table. Tickets and further information can be obtained by ringing Jamie on 0458 231 506.

operators embracing online tools planners and online booking and payment. Grampians Tourism CEO Will Flamsteed said Grampians Online was an exciting project that would position the Grampians tourism region and its destinations at the forefront of the global marketplace. As a result, it will increase sales and the dispersal of visitors across the region. “Tourism marketing is a fast and competitive business and it’s essential we get the right message in front of the right audience as effectively as possible,” Mr Flamsteed
said. “Grampians Online will do just that, providing our potential customers with everything they need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With 85% of travel consumers doing their research online, it’s absolutely crucial we get our digital offering right.” Mr Flamsteed said the new platform would be a single, streamlined entry point through which the region can market its destinations and experiences and where visitors can research, book and pay in real time. “An
important aspect of the new website and platform is that tourism operators don’t need any special technical IT knowledge – it will be a matter of keeping their existing website and social media up-todate as usual and the system will do the rest,” Southern Grampians Shire Tourism Manager Dianne Barrera said. Tourism operators are being contacted directly with more information about Grampians Online before the drop-in sessions but can also contact Grampians Tourism directly. How often do we talk about getting away from it all? But it’s not often we really get away from it all. We spend a weekend away, living by the old adage a change is as good as a holiday – but while we change our location, we don’t really get away from everything. But the chance to do just that is now basically on our doorstep, with the Willalooka Eco-Lodge. The sustainable home is almost as environmentally friendly as the wetlands and native scrub that forms the backdrop to arguably one of the most tranquil getaways in Australia. It might mean going to the middle of nowhere but you will never feel more relaxed or more rejuvenated than
when you spend a couple of days in the newly opened retreat. It was originally built as a family home for Kate and Thyne McGregor but proved less suitable for a young, growing family, especially with four year old son Archie confined to a wheelchair, and that’s when Kate decided to investigate the possibility of turning the beautiful property into an eco-tourism haven. Thanks to the Mount Gambier Library, customers now have access to free, anonymous and instant homework help online. The “yourtutor” service is now available from 4pm until 8pm, Monday to Friday. Students can connect online, as many times as they like, in order to understand their homework questions. The service lets students who are stuck with homework or assignment research to connect to
qualified tutors for one on one guidance in English, Maths, Science and assignment research. Students just use their library card number to log in at www.yourtutor.com.au, whether from the library or online from a home computer. There are no appointments necessary, and no registrations. “Local school children deserve this kind of first class education service, and we are pleased to give families the special
benefits that are already in existence elsewhere around the country,” said Jaclyn Gosling, children’s services development officer for the Mount Gambier Library. “It is easy and quick to connect, and the tutors are specialists in their subject areas. Students can submit draft assignments to be proof read or go through step by step maths or science problems that they don’t understand, or receive assistance with where to start researching a new assignment.” Parents will also find the service invaluable, especially those who may not have enough time to help their children with homework, or who studied too long ago to remember advanced content. Students connect online to a real life person; certified
teachers, professional tutors and graduates from Australian universities. The qualified tutors review specific homework and assignment questions with students online, using features like controlled chat and an interactive white board. Tutors don’t tell the students the answers, which makes yourtutor different to online learning tools that just provide pages of information. In addition to this amazing online resource, The Mount Gambier Library will be hosting “Homework Help Hour” every Thursday from 4.30pm until 5.30pm in the IT room, where students can come in and access yourtutor as well as other library databases for their homework and study. “This is ideal for students who do not have internet access at home, ensuring no family misses
at the theatre May 22 - Australian Octet Chamber Masterworks – Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - HAMILTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Australian Octet is Melbourne Chamber Orchestra’s new flagship chamber ensemble. Unique in Australia’s musical life, the Australian Octet is dedicated to performing music for five to eight strings. We have brought together eight of our country’s most eminent string players to form the Octet, under the leadership of Artistic Director William Hennessy. For Australian Octet’s début season, we present three very different monuments of the chamber repertoire and the first new Australian string octet in 20 years, by Batavia composer Richard Mills. Half breathtaking virtuosity, half passionate lyricism, Shostakovich’s youthful Octet is all showpiece—the composer himself described it as ‘the very best thing I have written.’ The Brahms Quintet shows a mature composer at the height of his powers, mining the intense vein of emotion and tender feeling that is the hallmark of his works. The program’s finale is a must-hear performance of Romanian composer George Enescu’s haunting Octet, a work of magnetic Romantic beauty and startling originality.

exhibition not to be missed
If there is a recipe for staging successful field days, then it is most surely in safe keeping with the organisers of the Lucindale
South East Field Days. Despite the weather gods testing the resolve of everyone on the Friday, 7500 patrons still came
and provided good and atmosphere and activity for more than 600 site holders. Following that test, in perfect weather
Saturday was huge. More than 13,500 attended, this being the largest single day crowd for many years, with the combined attendance of more than 21,000 for the two days of the 36th annual event down just 1000 on last year’s bumper crowd. Children are admitted free on the Friday of this event. Under the guidance of the Lucindale Lions Club these field days raise funds for the local South East and wider community. On the Friday, donations totalling $24,200 were made by Lucindale Lions president Dave Brooker to 12 local bodies and charities, with the Kingston Hospital benefitting to the tune of $10,000 to be the biggest beneficiary. Each year the Field Days committee refreshes the program, ensuring a variety of new entertainment and attractions is combined with the proven regulars. The main entertainment act this year was The Lumberjack Show, a multinational event featuring Canadians, Americans and New Zealanders. Hilariously entertaining, somewhat hiding the amazing athletic and lumberjacking skills of Eric Hoberg, Missoula, USA and Nick Hall, Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, this show was staged three times
each day and attracted huge crowds, especially on the Saturday. Michelle Lefler, Vancouver, Canada hosted the show which was produced by her New Zealand born husband Ben Lefler. Josh Burdon, Millicent was back again to entertain with amazing aerial feats in his Freestyle Motocross show. The high winds and rain on the Friday curtailed most of his show that day but the big Saturday crowd got to see Josh excel. He is the highest ranked independent Freestyle Motorcross rider in the country and is currently unsponsored. With his amazing ability on his bike,
that situation must surely soon be rectified. A special highlight this year was the staging of the Pedigree/Elders Australian Yard Dog Championships as part of the field days. This is the fourth time Lucindale has been honoured with the staging of the national championships, regularly hosting the state championship. The opening of a second set of eventing yards last year enabled the organising committee, ably led by Rex and Kay Hocking and SA President Lee Mickan to successfully host what is now a huge event. There
were well over 100 dogs competing from six states in the seven championship events. This saw non-stop competition for not only the Friday and Saturday, but also the two preceding days. The highlight of the event was the Australian Championship on the Saturday, with last year’s Lucindale winner and also reigning Australian champion, Joe Spicer, Glenthompson back to defend his title. However in another first, Sarah Mortimer from Dirranbandi, Qld travelled 1600 km to become the first female winner of this prestigious event, first staged in 1982. She is also only the second Queenslander to win after John Greenwood won in 1989. Sarah said she loved the challenge of the yard dog competitions and working as part of a team with such an intelligent animal. Her ‘teammate’ and star working dog was Whites Dixie, a six year old which has been a constant partner in Sarah’s six years’ of competing. “Dixie is our number one farm dog on our 10,500 hectare property and it is her consistency, balance of caution and aggression when necessary, and ability to read stock that makes her such a special working dog,” Sarah said. Sarah was third last year in her only previous participation in the National final, but came through this year with a fantastic score of 185.5 points out of a possible 200. Joe Spicer, last year’s winner with Gogetta Package had to be content with second this year, six points behind Sarah. A further point back in third was Mitch Duffy, NSW followed by SA’s highest placegetter, Lee Mickan on 177 points. Peter Darmody, NSW (176 points) and Simon Bowden, Tasmania on 172.5 points rounded out the top six placegetters with five of the six competing states represented in the top six placings. cont. opp. page

Above - A highlight of this year’s Lucindale Field Days was the hosting of the Australian Yard Dog Championships. First staged in 1982, this year provided a breakthrough for the female triallers with Sarah Mortimer, Dirranbandi, Queensland and her female dog Whites Dixie being the first ever female to win the championships. A delighted Sarah and Dixie are pictured after the awards ceremony and before their 1200km trip home.
exhibition not to be missed
Paddy Mulquinny (SA), Jason Crockford (SA), Adam James (Vic), Greg Watson (NSW), Rex Hocking (SA) and again Sarah Mortimer (Qld) all tasted winning success in the other six competitions from Novice classes through to the Open final. To have such a huge event run so smoothly and on time was a credit to all the organisers, helpers and sponsors, not to mention the producers who allowed their sheep to be used. At the completion of the awards ceremony, the chief organisers of the Lucindale event, Rex and Kay Hocking, had the honour of Life Membership of the SA Yard Dogs Association bestowed upon them; an extremely well deserved honour that took them by total surprise! As big as this yard dog event was, it was only a small part of the overall field days. While some tents suffered from the wind on the Friday, the grounds were in magnificent condition and by Saturday it was hard to tell that over 14mm of rain had fallen. This was appreciated by the site holders as well as the patrons. The committee recognises excellence in site presentation with annual awards. Supported by sponsorship, four site holders were duly recognised. The best indoor exhibit award, sponsored by the ANZ Bank who lost their own tent in Friday’s wind, was Australian Landscape Jewellery run by Suzette Watkins and Mike Fewster. Wickham Flower & Co Ltd was again the winner of the Best Agricultural Machinery or Stock Handling Exhibit award sponsored by Southern Australian Livestock. Meningie Fodder won the Barrett Distributors award for Best Single Exhibit, but the Best Overall Exhibit award this year went Drews Workshop Supplies at Naracoorte. This award was sponsored by the Lucindale Lions Club. By simply filling out forms in the official program, the public could win significant gate prizes. Nine prizes totalling $3455 in value were awarded this year with $500 donated by Bank SA on each of the two days being the biggest prize. There’s always something for all ages at Lucindale and that includes our youngest.
The Balharry Memorial Kindergarten Children’s Activity tent provided plenty of activities for the youngsters on both days, as did Old McDonald’s Animal Nursery which was packed with excited young children. In the competitive area, Elders again sponsored the Scarecrow and Mailbox competitions. Convenor Scott Rayner said there were a record 47 entries this year and he felt the Mailboxes in particular were of an exceptionally high standard. Elders have sponsored this competition for well over 20 years and SE Area Manager Robbie Neale was present to hand out the prizes to the winners who were present from each age category. Last year the SA Police were in attendance with their Dixie Band. This year they had a site where they gave out important community information and also had a great interactive
display to help celebrate their 175th anniversary. They are Australia’s oldest police force and are also one of the longest serving forces in the world. The combined Lucindale and Naracoorte Primary Schools’ choir again entertained in the Elad Shed leading into the ever popular fashion parades. Local models of all ages paraded the latest in fashion in the range of practical clothes that were available at the various participating clothing sites on the grounds. The Elad shed also hosted the NSW Quilting challenge display, this year’s theme being ‘Hexagon Hype’, with a myriad of patterns and colours. Demonstrations were regularly provided throughout the two days. A highlight was Kathryn Chaston who provided glass blowing demonstrations on the hour throughout both days, producing intricate
jewellery. Maza Gourmet Foods and Jenny Wisbey’s Gourmet Produce provided regular cooking demonstrations in the Yakka Pavilion. This was also the venue for other demonstrations by St Marys Wines, Koonara Wines, Collie Park, Dickens Delights and Gwandalan Alpacas. An event that started out as one to forget because of the weather ended up being one to most certainly remember for the right reasons. Such events don’t just happen and the fantastic group of community volunteers, again so admirably led by Chairman Doug Crosby and Secretary Lyn Crosby should be very proud of their efforts. On reflection their post event exhaustion should give way to quiet satisfaction. Planning is already underway for the 2015 event that will be staged on the 20th and 21st March 2015.

local story Glenelg Shire’s tourism and manufacturing are expected to the prime beneficiaries when Glenelg Shire Councillors undertake an entirely privatelyfunded exchange to its international friendship city, Zhangjiagang City, China, in 2014. Council’s International Relationships Policy principles allows for a maximum of two overseas visits - one visit to and one visit from the International friendship city - during each term of the council (every four years). Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr John Northcott will join with Councillors Geoff White, Anita Rank and Robert Halliday in privately funding their visit to China at a date to be decided later this year. The Portland Manufacturing Network will also be advised of this proposed visit and relevant business representatives invited to participation. Two local businessmen accompanied Council during their last visit to Zhangjiagang City in September 2011. Since then, there have been two student delegations from Zhangjiagang City (August 2012 and August 2013), which included a Government delegation with each exchange. Cr John Northcott said developing relationships between local and international school students was important for long-term opportunities and interactions between the countries. “These two student exchange visits occurred outside Council’s Policy principles, however due to the long standing friendship agreement with Zhangjiagang City, it was agreed that it would serve the Glenelg Shire by assisting with the exchanges,” he said. “The relationship with Zhangjiagang City has been nurtured since the 1990s and this has assisted with education at schools as well as between local and Chinese business relations. “I also want to assure ratepayers that councillor travelling and related expenses are the personal responsibility of Councillors and that they will not be funded by council. “If accompanied by any business representatives, this will also be at their own cost.”

celebrating 25 years
celebrating 25 years Pierina Dickenson has achieved something not many business owners achieve - she has been in business for 25 years. The Millicent hairstylist has established her business and developed it, constantly reassessing and evolving just how it looks and what it does to ensure it remains relevant to both her loyal customers and to attract new clients. Pierina and her staff reflect on being part of this salon’s success story and making their mark on the Millicent community.
“From curly perms to straight and sleek then back to wavy movement. Colours you had because you had to, then becoming addicted to the fabulous range of choice and creatively placed highlights. Haircuts that have evolved into stylish statements of who you are and show your sense of style. Your hair makes a statement and we have helped you achieve the looks that empower you. This is a snapshot of the changes seen in
the past 25 years. The salon has gone through an evolution of style as well with numerous makeovers – the biggest being the expansion into new beauty and spa rooms. From Nescafe to cappuccinos, personalised client service is a welcome change to the fast paced life we lead. It’s all about relaxing in a friendly atmosphere, shutting the world out and enjoying the experience. Something that has remained the same is the consistency in quality hairdressing. The dedicated professional team is a testament to expert training. Always ensuring the team stays motivated by encouraging education, training, attending expos, seminars, participating in competitions and photo shoots has been a
priority. I am passionate about educating with eight years in lecturing at TAFE, having the privilege of working with the hairdressers of the future. There are highlights too numerous to mention with the salon always evolving and striving to achieve more. New services are introduced frequently and a stand out change this decade would have to be straightening – we have gone from blowdrying hair straight to the introduction of straightening irons and the evolution of the technologies that are making our lives easier. Permanent straightening has definitely been one of the services I enjoy as it has the ability to change your life. Always sourcing the best quality products is what we pride ourselves on. Our
philosophy is maintaining the integrity of the hair and keeping it in the best condition possible. Partnerships with hair companies such as Australian owned and made De Lorenzo help to achieve these salon values. Having a sense of community is also important to the salon and we take pride in assisting through sponsorship, fundraising, charity work, it’s a way of us giving back. Thank you to my clients for your continued support and loyalty. To my team, you are a constant inspiration to me and keep me motivated. Thanks for your dedication. I am lucky to live in a community which is supportive.” Pierina Dickenson
“It’s exciting to be part of a team that’s so passionate about their careers and clients. I’ve been a part of the Pierina team for six years and in that time I’ve learnt so much from Pierina and the girls in a technical and business sense. It’s a great environment that prides itself on team work and creativity. In a constantly changing/evolving industry, it’s inspiring to work somewhere that encourages constant learning, training, creativity and our individual interests, including competitions, photo shoots, courses and boot camps. I think it is true how they say ‘if you stop learning, you’ve learnt nothing’. It’s amazing to see how many clients that have been going to the salon for 25 years and all the new ones along the way. Their loyalty is a testament to Pierina’s dedication, mentoring and business skills.” Stacey Tomlinson “In August 2012, I started working at Pierina’s Hair Concept, mainly doing Thursdays and some Saturdays. Then I got an apprenticeship in July 2013. I’ve improved many skills ever since I started working at Pierina’s like team work, organisation and time management. I love working with Pierina and the girls because the work place is such a live, friendly and safe environment.” Ruby Miranda.

Car maintenance in spotlight
An essential part of rural living for young people is the ability to maintain and understand their motor vehicle. It is not enough for a young driver to know how to drive a car, but they also need to know what to do if they are caught on the side of a lonely road with little or no phone signal. An opportunity for young female or male drivers aged between 15 and 25 to learn about tyres and pressures, wheel change procedure, bumper to bumper under vehicle inspection, cooling system/fuel system, fuse box, oil system, electrical system and how to jump start a battery will be held as part of National Youth
Week. A free 2.5 hour workshop is being offered by the Barry Maney Group on Thursday, April 10, at 6pm at their Jubilee Highway West Service Centre in conjunction with the District Council of Grant. The evening is aimed at acquainting participants with the mechanics of their vehicle, how the vehicle operates and what to do in an emergency situation, irrespective of the make or model they are driving. Registration for the workshop is essential. To register your interest contact the District Council of Grant on (08)8721 0444 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

MILLICENT IN FOCUS - Rotary Photographic Exhibition The Rotary Photographic Art Show has become another opportunity to increase tourism into Millicent and the District. Easter is a quieter time in Millicent and to have such a national photographic exhibition on our doorstep encourages tourists from the surrounding areas to visit. The Civic Centre is an arts and cultural hub over the Easter period with The Millicent Gallery exhibiting the local crafting of local artisans and the exceptional work of the talented quilters Julie Colbey and Kerry Hurst complimenting the outstanding photography in the Arts Centre with over 230 photographs on view. The Civic Precinct is increasingly developing as an arts hub with the ‘easel’ development commencing at the skate park, the mosaic panels at the Civic Centre and the new panel being added to the external wall of the Gallery, ceramic birds in flight in the Gallery Garden and exciting exhibition program at the Millicent Gallery and the community arts programs at the Millicent Library celebrating 50 years in December. See the full story on the photographic exhibition on page 3.
SOUTHERN LIFE The
never ending story
On May 15, 1969, Janice Nitschke had her first day as a library assistant at the Millicent Library. Forty five years on and she’s still there – the location has changed, her role has changed and libraries have certainly changed. She was head hunted for that initial job – having done well at school and she had no hesitation in accepting the role. “In those days if you were offered a position that was interesting you took it,” Janice said. Perhaps surprisingly, Janice was a science nerd more than a book worm. “I did like books,” she said. “But I loved science and I think that’s why I have always enjoyed developing the IT side of libraries.” The library was a tiny space at the rear of the current council offices, basically where the finance department sits now, and within 12 months, circumstances conspired to see her rise to the library manager’s position. Known for her innovation and willingness to push the boundaries and evolve the place of the library in a community, Janice admits that while the library started to expand its walls under her leadership – out into the verandah area – she took a while to truly see the potential of libraries and the roles they could play. “Back when I started, libraries were just books,” Janice said. “There were the catalogue cards and library boards didn’t even believe in paperbacks.”Those days generate fond but distant memories and in reality, it didn’t take Janice long to start to identify the potential of libraries as a community resource. It has also been during Janice’s
tenure that Millicent’s library facilities were also integrated into one site. “The Institute Library up the street had always been the lifeblood of the community,” she said. “And that’s what we always wanted the library to be.” To read the full story pick up your copy of the Autumn edition of Southern Life - in newsagents now.

and Bulldogs snare pre-season honours
Millicent has started the 2014 season in style, coming from behind in the Elastoplast Cup grand final to win the first silverware on offer this season. North Gambier had the measure of the Saints in the early going in the pre-season title decider with a hesitant Millicent forward line not enjoying its usual fluency, allowing Tigers defender Alannah Campbell and Meg Gazzard to create turnovers with monotonous regularity. And
with former Saint Audine Bryant controlling the mid court and goalers Ashlee Kalantarian and Abbey Duncan finding plenty of space and converting with good accuracy. North led by three at the main break and as so often happens, coach Lisa Duldig, who moved from the attacking wing into the centre, former coach Donna Denton and defender Hayley Dunn lifted the intensity a cog and dragged their less experienced team mates with them. Kylie Walker moved into the defensive circle at the main change and combined well with Dunn to shut down the Tigers goalers, making space a lot harder to find. The connection between Denton and new shooting partner Danika Jolley, a former Tiger, started to find some rhythm in the second half as well as Pip Ellis, who moved to the attacking wing, became an important link player as well. Injuries didn’t help North’s cause, entering the grand final with two of their most experienced players sidelined thanks to injuries sustained in the preliminary round and semi final respectively – veteran defender Leanne
Cameron with an ankle, an injury that has plagued her entire career, and Michelle Hosking with an Achilles injury that will require surgery and sideline her for the season. Bailey Watson earned a call up to the Tigers starting seven and while playing out of position at wing defence, earned a number of touches and while no one ever shuts Denton down, in the first half, in particular, Gazzard certainly went toe for toe with the champion and made her work for every possession. Duncan is a great pick up for the Tigers, the Kalangadoo premiership player, adding some impressive movement and accurate long range finishing to the North shooting circle. Denton, as always, took control for the Saints, while Dunn got critical touches in the second half that ensured the Saints maintained control once they had regained the lead. Both sides went into the title decider undefeated and were not challenged in their respective pools. Naracoorte was a great inclusion in the competition,
giving the Western Border clubs a different opponent to try new tactics against, while East, West and Casterton had undermanned squads and South also had a side combining A grade players with some junior talent.
Far left - Millicent A grade playing coach Lisa Duldig (top)led her side to the 2014 Elastoplast Cup title and 17 & under player Tenille Gray (bottom).
