Twenty sports for the over 30s are on the 2014 Naracoorte Masters Games program with no qualifying standards or times required to enter. Yes you can be a master of swimming at 18. Participants compete in their age group ensuring that the sport is played fairly, competitively and
in tremendous spirit. It’s expected there will be more than 1000 competitors converging on Naracoorte. Will you be one of them? “The opportunity to participate, compete and to be physically active is the main motivation of the 2014 Masters Games. You can either enter as an individual or get a team together,” Mayor Erika Vickery said. “Enthusiasm for the Games is gaining momentum. The sporting clubs in the area are looking forward to hosting the various competitions. LOCAL School Aanya Warden is throwing everything into her fundraising efforts for the World’s Greatest Shave. She has organised multiple
student leads the way events, has engineered a strong social media campaign and has stood up in front of hundreds of her peers and spoken about her
motivation and passion for the cause – the Leukaemia Foundation. It has been a sterling effort by anyone’s
standards and even more so in this case – Aanya is only 11 years old. She is currently ranked eighth in South Australia in terms of fundraising tally and many of her fundraising events are still to come. She has also easily eclipsed her initial goal when she registered for the March event. Her original plan was to cut off her ponytail if she raised $500 and shave her head if the tally hit $1000 – it currently sits at $2073.45. Aanya had toyed with the idea of taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave a couple of years ago but the idea was put on the backburner until she was older. Personal experience of cancer in recent times, including the death of a family friend last October, and the successful battle her grandfather and his partner have fought against the disease, combined with the suggestion from her hairdresser saw Aanya ask her parents if she could participate this year and the wheels were set in motion. “I was joking about shaving my head one day when I was getting my hair cut and my hairdresser said I should do it for charity,” Aanya said. “I was sitting in Chicken Boss thinking about what
she said and that’s when I decided to do the World’s Greatest Shave.” That hairdresser is Kelly Salievic, of Liquid Hair, and she will be doing the honours for Aanya at Mount Gambier’s Marketplace on March 13 at 6pm. But for now, the fundraising continues with a ten pin bowling event this Friday. Gambier City Bowl has $10 games on offer all day with 35 percent of the fees going to Aanya’s fundraising tally. There will also be $5 meal deals with 10 percent also going towards the World’s Greatest Shave. Aanya also has a couple of raffles on the go and Reidy Park School, where she is a Year 6 student, is also set to get behind her with some fundraising efforts, including a crazy hair day. She also held a sausage sizzle at Masters at the weekend so her fundraising tally is sure to be even more impressive this time next week. A $1000 donation from the Village Medical Centre certainly helped push Aanya’s campaign into top gear but she is just as appreciative of the smaller donations, like her brother handing over $5 from his pocket money. Aanya has never had short hair yet the decision to shave her head has been a simple one. “I think when kids have cancer and lose their hair they are probably
a bit embarrassed and maybe not want to go to school and I think it is harder to deal with than for adults,” Aanya said. “I just want to show that it’s nothing to be embarrassed about and also show other kids that it isn’t a big deal if someone has no hair.” Aanya’s message is a simple one and by logging onto her facebook page or googling her You Tube videos, you can see
for yourself. Her brothers have been the mastermind behind the social media campaign – Nick Mashado (13) and Aramis Warden (7) have told Aanya’s stories through the Nick & Aramis Show with the kids scripting the entire production themselves. “Mum and dad have been really supportive and my brothers think it’s really great what I’m doing as well,” Aanya said. Donations can be made to Aanya up until May 31.

Entertainment from Mahalia Fox, followed by DJ Jake. Tickets available at Gambier City Chemmart Centro. - All proceeds donated to Ovarian Cancer Australia.
The soaring summer temperatures have certainly allowed us to enjoy some great times outdoors, even if the lawns and garden have taken a battering with the lack of rain. Summer in the Limestone Coast can be so changeable, but that welcome rain the other day has certainly helped to dampen the dust. Outdoor entertaining has been great this summer and as autumn draws closer now is a great time to look for some outdoor furniture bargains and revamp your patio, deck, balcony or pool areas. Gardenarium is the premier supplier of outdoor furniture in the Limestone Coast and we specilaise in every type of dining setting, bar settings, coffee tables right through to outdoor couches, drinks trollies and storage boxes. At present we are having a fantastic February clearance to make way for a new shipment of furniture due soon. We have also included some ex-demo models and last of stock lines, so now is a great time to pick up a bargain. One of my particular favourites is “The Capri” outdoor lounge setting, made from real woven wicker on a
Summer is the time for outdoor dining
hardwood frame complete with cushions and comes with a two seater, two singles, a coffee table and side table. It is so comfortable and can be left outdoors, undercover, all year round. This has been drastically reduced to make room, along with one only French provincial wicker dining setting and various marble, stone and travertine dining settings. Much of our furniture can be viewed at www.gardenarium. com.au The sale is on while stocks last and includes bar settings at half price, Adirondak chairs in several different colours made from teak, outdoor benches in timber, aluminium and steel, as well as outdoor couch (one only) in aluminium, so great for the beach or coastal conditions. Gardenarium is also the stockist of ‘A’ grade teak outdoor furniture settings and we have a one piece extension setting remaining reduced from $1766 to $883, which is half price. We also have “The Roman” setting heavily reduced to $1999, which is travertine stone and aluminium with eight carver dining chairs, ideal for decks and balconies as it is light in weight. The
clearance continues with odd chairs, some in sixes and eights, others in ones and twos, so if you are just looking for one or two items, something for the beach house or a bargain, any offer will be accepted, we just need the room in our storage facility. Much of our giftware, wall art and birdhouses are on sale too and while you are in you can pick up a last minute Valentine’s gift and birdhouses are on sale too. The last days of our Huge Summer Shade Sale are drawing to an end, with reductions on all of our Advanced Trees, shrubs, fruit trees in the Limestone Coast Advanced Tree part of the business. Make the most of the heat and these scorching days to look where you need badly required shade on your home or garden
and pop in an advanced tree so you can have instant results. The sale includes limited numbers of the much sought after Mop Top trees and we currently stock over 30 varieties (see our website for details) and columnar or fastigiate trees which are ideal for suburban fencelines, to give height not width in restricted spaces but able to cast shade on homes and garden. Many of these are deciduous (will drop their leaves in winter) so can still provide winter sun but shade the harsh summer sun. The sale ends Sunday, March 2, unless sold out prior. So, hurry on in for some bargains on outdoor furniture and trees and make the most of the summer conditions. By Calum Haygarth

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Olympics aren’t so exciting by Robbie Tansel
I’m so over Summer and Winter. They’re always like, “Ooooh, look at us we’ve got our own Olympics. We’re just so good.” Well maybe not always, but every four years or whatever. I also feel kind of sorry for Spring and Autumn. I mean, why don’t they get Olympics? They’re seasons too. There’s nothing wrong with them. Admittedly they’re not as well known for a single type of weather condition. Summer’s all about being hot and Winter is all about being really cold, after all. Spring and Autumn are just a bit of everything. On the other hand, Autumn has that cool leaves falling thing and Spring has that sprouting new life thing. That’s got to mean something. I wouldn’t be that upset if I was Spring or Autumn though. The Olympics aren’t that big a deal. Sure there’s a couple of cool sports in both the Winter and Summer Olympics but there’s lots of duds too.
Sure basketball is cool, sprinting and the marathon are genuine sporting events worth watching, and even hockey is worth watching every four years if only for the fact that we’re generally half a chance for a medal. Consider though that the Summer Olympics also features synchronised swimming, race walking aka championship bumwiggling, and gymnastics. Not so cool anymore, are you Summer? You’re Olympics seem pretty lame now, don’t they? Half of your sports aren’t even really sports are they? They’re recreational activities not sports, loser. And don’t you sit there all smug and laughing, Winter. Apart from the fact your Olympics are cold, there’s really nothing much cool about you. It gets a bit repetitive when every event is either on skis or skates. While I think about it, you might actually have something if you got rid of the skis and skates. Imagine ski jumping without skis; ice dancing without the ice skates; the luge without the sled. I’d actually watch that! As if that doesn’t make the Winter Olympics bad enough, let’s consider that they’re still prepared to give someone an Olympic gold medal for Curling. An actual athlete trains for
time to tee off February 23 – March 2 - Southern Ports Golf Week (Kingston, Robe and Beachport) Southern Ports Golf Week is a joint venture of the Kingston, Robe and Beachport Golf Clubs. This 54 hole championship golf event will be played at all three clubs for all handicap ranges. The tournament starts on the last Saturday in February and finishes on the first Saturday in March each year and golf will be played on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
years and years to be the best in the world at their discipline. They train, they sweat, they bleed, they sacrifice any semblance of a normal life pursuing the remotest chance of an Olympic medal. And they give exactly the same medal to some clowns sweeping and skating at the same time. Not so cool anymore, is he Spring and Autumn? To try and deal with this inequity I’ve decided to make it my lifelong work to pioneer the first ever Spring and Autumn Olympics. To really rub it in, I’m going to make sure I include plenty of stupid sports which aren’t really sports. I’ll include a couple of cool sports too. Let me float a couple of ideas past you and you can email me at
email@example.com and let me know what you think. For Autumn, I’m thinking we have dwarf tossing. The dwarfs will be falling like leaves from a tree. For Spring I’m considering backwards running; just try and tell me it’s any more stupid than race walking. I think you can already see it’s going to be more entertaining than the Winter Olympics. I’m planning on sticking golf in somewhere. s we all know it’s a recreational activity, not a sport so it’ll fit in perfectly with things like dressage. Don’t even get me started on that one. The horse is the only one who is actually doing anything athletic, yet the poonce whose contribution to the Olympics is sitting on its back gets the medal. How do you like me now Summer and Winter?

Advertorial I JND FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS
Be prepared The bushfire season has got off to an early and devastating start. The New Year is a good time to reinforce your plans to protect your home and finances. The recent bushfires in New South Wales have had a devastating effect, with insurance losses so far estimated at more than $183 million. While loss of life has fortunately been minimal, many people have suffered the loss of their home and priceless memories. By 2020, the annual cost of bushfires is estimated to rise to about $18 billion, with double the number of major events, a longer fire season and a 25 per cent increase in area burnt. Protect yourself in the short term… It’s important to make short-term plans so you’re prepared for any immediate emergency. • Update your fire safety plan – it’s vital to know what you’re doing in case of an emergency. • Fire proof your property – make sure you minimise any risks and cut down vegetation where possible. • Store precious photos elsewhere or scan them into Cloud storage such as Flickr or Photobucket – you don’t want to be worrying about possessions if you have to act quickly. • Save important documents online – a secure and accessible Australia Post Digital MailBox is a great way to go paperless.
Stay connected There are plenty of digital resources that can help you stay connected to the latest news during a bushfire emergency. •Google’s Fire Crisis Map shows the location and severity of bushfires across the country. •Emergency apps like EmergencyAUS, FireReady (Victoria) and Fire Near Me (NSW) can give you more detailed information about state and territory warnings. …and the long term It’s also a good idea to make long-term plans. After an emergency, there are huge demands on local services and tradies can be in short supply. It can take more than 12 months to repair or rebuild homes, according to the Insurance Council of Australia.1 Insurance can help you get back on your feet after suffering the ravages of
a bushfire or other natural disasters such as cyclones and floods. The New Year can be a good time to review your home and contents insurance and make sure you’re fully insured. It’s also a good idea to think about personal insurance. If the worst happens, and you’re out of action through illness or injury, insurance can help you pay the bills and put food on the table, while you’re getting back on your feet. • Trauma insurance pays a lump sum if you suffer an illness or injury covered in your policy. • Total and permanent disability insurance pays a lump sum if illness or injury prevents you from ever working again. • Income protection generally pays up to 75 per cent of your salary if you can’t work due to illness or injury. • Life insurance pays a lump sum to your beneficiaries (usually your family) in the event of your death.

finance, cropping, livestock development, machinery, children’s activities – you name it and it will probably be there,” Field Days secretary Lyn Crosby said. “The field days will be staging the Australian Yard Dog championships at our 2014 event which is a big honour.” Fresh and popular entertainment is also provided for visitors and there are two exciting new feature acts booked in for 2014. Tony Golder, from Horse Solutions,\ has more than 30 years of experience with horses, specialising in the foundation training of young horses. His act involves his 16 year old Appaloosa stallion
“Nevada Regal Deck” that loves being in front of a responsive and appreciative crowd the duo performing together for more than 10 years. There is nothing quite like the second feature act, “The Lumberjack Show”. This international act is highly action packed, humorous and interactive and caters for all demographics. This funny family entertainment has been thrilling crowds in Canada, New Zealand and now Australia for 10 years and is worth a visit to these field days on its own. LOCAL Almost The Coonawarra Park was the venue for 18th Annual Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash Petanque Tournament held over the
two decades of fun and competition on the piste weekend of February 8 and 9, which was hailed a huge success by all who attended. The tournament provided some fierce interstate
rivalry between South Australian, Victorian and New South Wales teams over the two days of competition. This event
run by the Coonawarra Petanque Club, is becoming recognised as one of the biggest and best tournaments in Australia. With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, teams vied for over $6000 in cash and prizes, and Championship honours. The extremely successful weekend had nearly 200 players entered, creating 60 teams in the competition, travelling from

Melbourne, Adelaide, regional Victoria and Newcastle along with a good turn out of local teams attending. Saturday was an extremely hot day, with the organisers calling a halt to play early in the afternoon for a couple of hours, until the cool change came through. This caused the cancellation of one ‘Round’ of games, but the local team of Andrew Jackman, Jean-Paul Bouyer and Louis Oltarczy seemed to handle the heat well and finished in “First Place” after
the 5 Qualifying Rounds, then with local teams of Grant Hetherington, Brian Wagner, Simon Fennel, and Guy Detot, Guy Bahler, Jean-Luc Domergue finishing 9th and 11th respectively in the top 16 teams. On Sunday, in ideal conditions, the final rounds of the tournament were dominated by the Adelaide Clubs this year, and a spectacular Grand Final was played between two teams from ‘Eastern Suburbs Petanque Club’, seeing Sukrit Vaswani, Ken Maski and David Lefer take out the Championship 13 – 6, giving them a clean sweep for the weekend by not loosing a game. ‘I really enjoy coming to the Coonawarra tournament, it has a great atmosphere and the standard of the competitors is excellent. The number of people attending is a testament to the quality of this event,’ said Sukrit Vaswani, from Adelaide, a regular visitor to the tournament and captain of the winning team. The high standard of play by the local teams was seen through Grant Hetherington, Brian Wagner, Simon Fennel,
finishing in seventh place overall and Guy Detot, and his two friends from Melbourne winning the ‘Consulation” event. ‘The whole weekend has been beautiful and was enjoyed by all who came along”. said Guy Detot, President Coonawarra Petanque Club. ‘The influx of people for the weekend has been tremendous for the region, and we expect to see even more people coming along in the future’. This is the revival of the musical that rocked and shocked a generation in the 1960s. Hair tells the story of a group of politically active, longhaired hippies living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. The musical is renowned for its profane depiction of the use of illegal drugs, treatment of sexuality, irreverence for the American flag and the controversial nude scene. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of rock musical.

Elite Adelaide triathlete Chris Wigell claimed back to back titles in the SA Olympic Distance Championship at Sunday’s Joggers World 2014 Kingston SE Triathlon. The 24 year old’s time of 1:57:20s fell just short of the olympic course record, but ensured that Wigell’s (pictured left and below) winning streak continues. “I won Kingston last year and I have pretty much won every single race since, including every South Australian triathlon this season. I’m in a good place, and it has been quite satisfying,” he said. Wigell described the 1.5kilometre swim as the toughest Limestone Coast leg, but he overcame the choppy seas to set up a strong lead for the run home. “My strategy has always been to swim and bike quite hard in Kingston because it’s a course that certainly works for me, and to be able to have that four of five minute lead going into the run is ideal,” he said. Adelaide’s Sam Boag was the first female across the line finishing sixth overall in a time of 2:15:07, and the result was no surprise to event race caller Peter Nolan. “Sam Boag is also in sizzling form – she is a gun,” he said. 2012 winner Felicity Lloyd finished second for the women, while Mount Gambier athletes David Chant and Craig Dunn were the first local entrants to complete the olympic distance event, taking 10th and 11th spot after posting equal times of 2:16: 20. Summertown entrant Zak Wheaton was
the overall winner of the Dan Luscombe Short Course (500m S, 13.3km C, 3.6km R), with Port Noarlunga’s Chloe Lane the first female and third overall placegetter. “Special mention goes to Naracoorte’s Yvette Fisher, who was second woman overall and also won the 30-39 age group,“ said Kingston SE Triathlon Club president, Alison Stillwell. More than 400 athletes participated in the five different categories in Sunday’s event, which was the seventh race of the Triathlon SA State Series. The final two events in the series will be held next month in Euston and Victor Harbor. Courses in the Joggers World 2014 Kingston SE Triathlons include: International Cycles Olympic Course (1.5km S, 40km C, 10km R), Dan Luscombe Short Course (500m S, 13.3km C, 3.6km R), Kevin Wright Plumbing Come ‘n’ Tri Course (200m S, 7.3km C, 2.4km R), Harrington 7-11 year olds (50m S, 3km C, 500m R) RFDS Fun Run/Walk (6km/4km). ATHLETICS Pentathlon The personal best results were rolling in thick and fast at Sunday’s Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre’s (MGDLAC) annual Pentathlon Day. An estimated 70 athletes aged from Under 6 to Under 17 hit the track at Mount Gambier High School and competed in five different events throughout the morning including 50 – 800 metre running events, shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. “The Pentathlon Day is an internal MGDLAC meet, and unlike the Regional Day which was held in Naracoorte late last year, there are no points awarded - it is purely a participation day and all athletes taking part receive a trophy, with the personal

achievements of each individual athlete being added to the Centre’s end-of-season tally,” said president Jonathon Lillecrapp. The opportunity was also there for Under 9 and over entrants to meet state qualifying standards for the ‘be active’ State Individual Championships to be held at Adelaide’s Santos stadium on March 22-23. “This is the pinnacle event for many participants, and we’re looking forward to a strong contingent of our members heading up to Adelaide,” said Jonathon. The 2013-14 season officially began in midOctober, and athletes resumed their regular weekly meetings in late January after an extended
break over the Christmas holidays. “The enthusiasm remains strong for the second half of the season, and it’s great to see so many athletes and their parents and relatives out each Friday night starting their weekends on such a high note, with the centre’s motto being FAMILY, FUN & FITNESS – BE YOUR BEST,” Jonathon said. Below (clockwise from top left) - Natalie Stewart secured a PB in the under 11 high jump; Sam Dukalskis is the record holder in the Under 11 high jump; the start of the Under 8 70m sprint and Shane Delaney competing in the under 8 discus.
BASKETBALL Lakers The Mount Gambier Lakers Men had to settle for bridesmaid status again at the weekend’s Victorian Country All Conference Basketball Championships in Bendigo, going down to Shepparton in the title decider by 14 points. The Lakers enjoyed a bye in the opening round of the round robin play-offs and then defeated Churchill by a commanding 16 points - Simon Berkefeld top scoring in a awesome performance that yielded 41 points. But in the final, Shepparton, who had defeated Churchill by only two points in the round robin section, managed to

get the better of the Lakers, turning a three point quarter time deficit into a six point half time lead. The second half was the most telling though, with the Lakers scoring only 19 points for the half and while it was a defensive stoush, Shepparton scored 30 and the title was theirs. Simon Berkefeld top scored for the Lakers with 16, with good support from Matt Parslow (13); Jak Ryan (12) and Joe Ferguson-Lane (20). SOFTBALL Local Mount Gambier Softball League Under 17 team claimed the State Under 17 Junior Softball Championship title after going through the two day event at Blue Lake Sports Park undefeated. Boasting a number of A grade players and three State under 16 representatives, the Mount Gambier side all but cruised through the preliminary rounds and quarter final stage. In

Sunday morning’s semi final against Centrals Districts, the young guns found themselves two runs down but rallied hard and advanced to the title decider with a 5-2 victory. Facing Sturt in the grand final, Mount Gambier was switched on from the get go and produced an error free performance and consistent team batting to set up a 4-0 lead by the bottom of the second and extended that to 9-0 as the game clicked
over 65 minutes. Eleanor McClintock and Georgia Hood shared pitching duties in the championships decider and never allowed the Sturt batters a look in with some smart, consistent pitching. “They really did a good job right across the weekend,” coach Tanya Hood said. “It was an even team effort with everyone performing well in the field and everyone getting safehits - you can’t ask for much more than what the girls gave me over the weekend.” Jenny Burston was assistant coach of the championship winning team. In the Under 13 division, Mount Gambier was narrowly denied a second title, when the young line-up went down 4-5, also to Sturt, having lost 1-3 to the same side in the round robin matches. Fielding an
exceptionally young side, coach Felicity Walker said the most pleasing aspect of the weekend was the improvement in every player in her squad. The match was marred by an umpiring controversy that
saw a batter that was struck out and called out by the plate umpire then recalled due to a technicality but despite the confusion and disappointment surrounding that decision, the young team rallied to get within
one run of victory. Pitcher Imogen walker, catcher Montana Millard and short stop Dana Jones were the pick of the young side, with Dana collecting three home runs for the tournament and Imogen, two.
Above - Under 17 State champions. Left - Under 13 runnersup.
Below (from left) - Dana Jones connects well with this pitch and sends it soaring into the outfield for the first of her three home runs for the tournament in Under 13 action; Emily Dawe heads home courtesy fo some stunning batting from her team mates in under 13 action; Jorja Humphries uses her judgement to let this high pitch pass in Under 13 competition at the weekend; team baby Mckenzie Millard jumps out of the path of this wayward pitch on day one of the Under 13 softball championships and Under 17 utility Jenna Burston is a picture of concentration as she assesses the next pitch.
Below (from left) - Montana Millard readies herself for the next pitch in Under 13 action, Under 13 pitcher Imogen Walker impressed all weekend, despite not being a regular pitcher for her club wide Warriors. Right - Under 17 pitcher Georgia Hood was also impressive with the bat at the weekend.
Above (clockwise from far left) - Under 17 catcher Amber Hood makes no mistake as she gloves this K2; Nikki Howard makes good connection with this pitch during Under 17 action; Maddie Hann has eyes onyl for the next pitch at the weekend; Yazmin King showcased some agressive base running to ensure her side was always in a position to score and Under 17 pitcher Eleanor McClintock winds up for this delivery at Blue Lake Sports Park at the weekend.

rods take over city If you happened to see a large number of Hot Rods and classic cars out and about in Mount Gambier over the weekend of the February 8 and 9 there was a good chance they were attending the annual Valentine’s Day Hot Rod Run and Swap Meet held by the Lake City Rodders. The event, now in it’s 22nd year, brings rodders from all around the state and from as far as Albury-Wodonga to Mount Gambier for a relaxed weekend catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. Entry numbers were up on previous years and numbered 71 with many more just participating in the Show and Shine on Sunday. Swap meet numbers were again solid and car numbers on display at Show and Shine were also up on previous years. The weekend commenced on Friday night with registration

and a BBQ tea at the clubrooms. Entrants spent Saturday morning taking in a bit of retail therapy or a tourist activity or two before meeting at the Western Tavern for lunch. After lunch entrants participated in a poker run and observation run to Nangwarry. They visited the Nangwarry Forestry Museum before returning to Mount Gambier for another evening of entertainment at the Lake City Rodders clubrooms. Very few of these cars run airconditioning and it was a credit to the entrants that the run had so many participants on such a hot day. Malseed Park on Sunday was the venue for the Swap meet and Show and Shine. Additional entertainment this year included a jaws of life demonstration and dancing from the local rock and roll club. During Sunday’s swap meet the club announced they have arranged Mt Gambier to be a stopover point for Rodders heading to Tasmania for the Hot Rod Nationals at Easter. The stopover will see approximately 30 rods from Western Australia and a number from Adelaide spend 3-4 days in the South East. The club is in the process of organising a show and shine for the weekend before Easter to give the public the opportunity to have a close up look at some classic machinery. The club is extremely proud of the economic benefit they have brought and will bring to the South East through the annual rod run and this unique opportunity presented to them this year.
