secure your financial future

Trevor Morony was born in Mount Gambier and has lived all his life here. Married with three children, Trevor’s son Nick has recently commenced employment within the business. A qualified electronics tradesperson, Trevor spent many years in the electronics industry, in both repairs and retail. He changed career in 2003 and was educated with a Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) Trevor Morony Snapshot • Started in the financial planning industry March 2003 • 10 years experience

• Received a scholarship with MLC in 2005 • Purchased the Financial Planning business from Rick Butler (Blue Ribbon Insurance) in 2012 • First appointment is complimentary - there is no cost to the client. • Been in business for 12 months and we have been busy dealing with a number of changes within the financial planning industry. The friendly team at Morony Financial Services provide clear affordable and professional advice to a broad range of people. From a single young person just starting employment and wanting to simply protect their

income, a young couple just starting their family, to the middle aged and retirees planning for the future. On January 24 last year, Trevor commenced the next stage of his life and opened Morony Financial Services, under the well-known licensee MLC Financial Planning. With the support provided by MLC, Morony Financial Services is well positioned to provide planning solutions well into the future What they do: Some people may not fully understand exactly what Morony Financial

Services does for its clients. Financial planning covers many different areas within the finance industry. The most prominent currently is SUPERANNUATION. Super is so important when we need it at retirement, however it is seldom considered seriously in our lead up to retirement and sometimes forgotten about. Morony Financial Services can help a client collect information on all of their older or forgotten super funds and make some recommendations to contribute and combine all funds into one (consolidate). This reduces the complexity so only one statement is received

rather than several allowing the client to understand their exact position clearly. One important consideration before combining all super funds is to make sure important insurances are not cancelled by mistake. Morony Financial Services takes the hard work out of this process and will recommend the most appropriate strategy. They also discuss the clients attitude to risk and where they are comfortable investing their super. Some people are aggressive investors and have mostly shares, where others may be conservative and invest a higher percentage in cash and bonds. Morony Financial Services makes sure

you are invested where you are comfortable and this may vary over time depending on your life stage. Some people are aggressive investors in their early days and then taper off into cash as they get closer to retirement. Morony Financial Services is also able to establish investment outside of superannuation as this enables the investment to be accessed rather than be locked away inside super. The set up of a Family Fund can be used for a number of family based events, including holidays, home

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Are you fracking kidding me? by Robbie Tansel

Friday, February 21 - 7pm - COCKTEAL EVENING City Hall, Mount Gambier (entry via Cave Gardens) Tickets $50 - includes complimentary champagne and light canapes as well as fashion parade, raffles and auction. Entertainment from Mahalia Fox, followed by DJ Jake. Tickets available at Gambier City Chemmart Centro. - All proceeds donated to Ovarian Cancer Australia.

Boy do I feel silly. After all these years I was totally convinced that this state Labor government were an incompetent bunch of buffoons. Everything they’ve done has convinced me that they had no idea what they were doing. And before you think I’m just bashing them, how useless must the other side be that they haven’t managed to shake them from power since 2002? Anyway I thought they were hopeless but it turns out they had a masterful plan all along. Follow me and we’ll see if we can work it out. Labor knew that with exploration for underground gas being all the rage around the world, it would only be a

matter of time before it came to South Australia. They could in fact authorise and encourage it. The discovery of underground gas could lead to fracking (fracturing underground rocks to extract gas). At times around the world, fracking has led to underground water resources being contaminated and rendered useless for human consumption as well as a massive variety of other environmental concerns. On some occasions I believe some people’s tap water has become flammable. Are you with me so far? If this were to happen to the aquifer in our part of the world, it would surely affect the forest industry. Contaminated water wouldn’t be good for trees, causing the forests to become

completely worthless. What would you do? Well you’d sell off the forest while you can, even if you didn’t get market value, while it was worth something. Then you’d start cashing in on experimental gas exploration. Those sly foxes. The question now is, “Am I a conspiracy theorist or just being facetious?” I’m not sure but if it was true it would be just about the smartest thing they’ve done in government. In all honesty I’ve got to say I’m a little apprehensive about

this gas exploration and even the mention of fracking frightens me. I’ve read the horror stories about aquifers being poisoned and other environmental disasters. I think the people making these decisions, whether they are government or companies need to be reminded about the difference between needs and wants. We were all taught the difference between needs and wants when we were in our primary school years. Water is a need. Humans can’t survive without clean water. Without it we die. Humans can survive without experimental gas from fracking and the associated millions and millions of dollars produced. That’s a want. A greedy, selfish want. Now the people who do the exploring would say they know what they’re doing. There’s no way they would do anything that would lead to environmental damage. I bet all the people responsible for previous issues said the same thing. No-one ever thinks it will happen to them. Should we really be taking any risk when there have been a variety of issues around the world? I repeat, clean water is a fundamental need of human existence. Hang on, I’ve got another piece of the puzzle worked out. Pollute the aquifer down here, and then they’ll have a reason to fire up that multi-million dollar white elephant desalination plant. Now I am starting to sound like a nut. If you think that the moon landing never happened and it was just a Jay Weatherill conspiracy, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

February 22 - Hair: The Summer of Love LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE, WARRNAMBOOL This is the revival of the musical that rocked and shocked a generation in the 1960s. PORTLAND HARBOUR The current “publically unseen” work at Portland Harbour is the largest and most time consuming part of the project, contractors have said, as underground and offsite work continues to exceed project deadlines. Contractors Porthaul Civil and Bellingham Marine have reported that they are well on track to meet the initial project completion date of 30 April 2014, after work began on the third and final stage of the project just two weeks ago. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Northcott gave Premier Denis Napthine and other Councillors a tour of the site last Friday. “We spoke with contractors and were impressed with their enthusiasm and program of works,” Cr Northcott said. “We couldn’t be happier with how quickly the project is all taking shape and are looking forward to the ongoing fortnightly progress reports.” Underground plumbing work will begin at Portland Harbour next week, with the underground drainage system, controlling run-off from the roads and car-park, mostly completed. The ‘pontoon concrete pre-cast’ work by contractor Bellingham Marine also began this week, after pontoons designs were finalised in December, and piling and plies for the pontoons are now scheduled to be placed in February/March 2014. Construction of the peninsula extension, including construction of a sloping rockwall between the sea and land to control erosion and absorb the energy from the tidal action, will also get underway in the first week of February. Earthworks in preparation for roads works will start within the next two weeks.

There’s no shortage of home and lifestyle programs on television and Mount Gambier is set to be well and truly in the spotlight when an Argent Constructions deigned and built home is showcased on the national airwaves on Australia’s Best Houses - a 7TWO presentation of the best the industry has to offer from across Australia. Inclusion in the program is further confirmation that this award winning, family owned and operated business is at the cutting edge of the industry. Argent Constructions has won the HIA Spec Home of the Year in South Australia four of the past five years - taking out the top gong from 2009-11 and again in 2013. It is the 2013 HIA winner that is being showcased in the Australia’s Best House program. Set to air on

February 12, the award winning Argent home boasts jarrah doors and handrails, western red cedar shingles and a 500 kilogram post from the old Melbourne Wharf as a corner feature. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study nook, a kitchen with state-of-the-art smeg appliances and a butler’s pantry, automatic blinds, a hidden plasma that appears from under a Caesar stone top with the push of a button and a speaker system wired throughout the house at

the touch of a remote, the home combines technology, elegance and liveability. Formed in 1975, Argent Constructions has been built from the ground up by directors, Daryl and Sue Argent and together with their sons and daughter they have built many homes in the Limestone Coast region, ranging from units, to custom holiday houses in Robe, to family homes in Mount Gambier and surrounding region. Argent Constructions specialise in building homes that complement your lifestyle and no matter what your budget, they are committed to providing you with the highest quality finishes. Tune in to 7TWO on Wednesday, February 12, at 9.30pm to see just what this proud Mount Gambier based company has achieved right in our own backyard.

Dance on top of the world

The biggest and best Sam Malseed is riding a wave of success at the moment that would make many a seasoned performer jealous. Hot on the heels on his successful progression through the early stages of the audition process for the TV show So You Think You Can Dance Australia, Sam

was also recently crowned Dancer of the Year at the 2014 National Showcase. The talented young dancer had earned top 10 finishes before and had firmly set his sights on nothing short of a top three finish – he achieved that and then wowed the judges in the dance off to be crowned the best – the same title fellow MJ dancer Euan Doidge achieved in 2010. Sam was part of yet another successful MJ Dance Studio contingent that included 54 dancers, of which more than half were experiencing the national competition for the first time. MJ dancers attend the prestigious competition every year but it is only every second year that the large contingent heads off to tackle primarily the best metropolitan schools in the land. One of the things principal Maria Slape is so proud of is that every other dance school has an audition process

at the theatre February 7 Roy Orbison & Del Shannon SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE, MOUNT GAMBIER Come and relive the magic and the classic hits of two of the world’s greatest and most successful Rock n Roll Music Legends of all time.

to be part of the National Showcase experience, whereas the Mount Gambier studio takes anyone who wants to work hard and give it a go. “We’re proud that we can get our dancers all up to a standard to not just compete at Showcase but to be one of the best,” Maria said. “This year really was the highest standard I have ever seen since

coming to Queensland.” A lot of hours go into the routines, costumes and sets for the January competition and make no mistake, Maria wants her dancers to perform at their best but the social aspect and the networking is just as critical. cont. page 22

Dance on top of the world

February 15 They’re Playing Our Song PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND In a story based on the real-life relationship of composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, a wisecracking composer finds a new, offbeat lyricist.

From page 19 “You look at our Facebook page right now and you can see all the messages from schools from around Australia and it’s not just about how well we did but how friendly we were, how supportive my dancers

were of other performers and that’s as important to me as the judges’ comments and marks,” Maria said. “The kids make some wonderful friends and meeting important people in the industry.” And that’s another reason MJ continues to compete at

National Showcase – the judges are all working in the Australian dance industry, with a couple of top US industry representatives also on the panel. “They are being assessed by people at the cutting edge of what is going on in dance right now,” Maria said. “They know the latest trends and their feedback is so relevant because they are working in the industry and know what people are looking for in a dancer.” And that also means they were tough critics of the almost 4000 young dancers taking to the stage at Showcase. “They were tough but fair and that’s why our results were so pleasing,” Maria said. Seven soloists, one duo and four troupes secured platinum scores, which is more than 95 out of a possible 100, with the Mount Gambier school accumulating 19 platinum scores. The other pleasing aspect to MJ’s

2014 National Showcase campaign was the success of the acrobatic and ballet students. Teacher Christina Jenkin was working on her first Showcase and the results were even better than anticipated, with many of Christina’s soloists also mixing it with the very best. Festival comes of age With three new headline acts that have never apeared in the region before, the Wood, Wine & Roses Festival, in Heywood, looks set to celebrate its 21st anniversary in style. Bluesy funsters and Australia’s Got talent finalists The Pigs (pictured), bike stunt act Flair Riders and the Dare Devil Circus Dogs will complement the usual array of attractions including the street parade, fireworks, Hall’s Gap Zoo, Truck & Ute Show and woodchopping. The fesitval, which is held on the last Saturday of Feburary every year, is also a showcase of local produce, wine and craft with a wide variety of more than 100 stallholders giving a genuine market feel to the day. Australia’s favourite bluegrass funsters The Pigs are known worldwide for their combination of supercatchy original tunes and foot-stomping ‘Piggified’ cover versions. Crashing

through musical genres like a runaway tractor, the Pigs’ latest album, The Great Bluegrass Swindle marries superb musicianship with a distinctly Australian sense of humour – and hints at the uniquely bent energy of The Pigs’ exceedingly popular live shows. For over 8 years now, The Pig Family has been stepping out onto the big festival stages around Australia, barefoot and bewildered. Meanwhile the band’s YouTube Channel has seen more than 400,000 hits, with their Single Ladies video becoming something of a sensation. Showcasing Australia’s top Freestyle Trials Riders, Flair Riders Show is a dynamic

performance displaying motorcycles and bicycles being pushed to their limits. Stunts such as 180s, 360s, transfers, stalls and even backflips are performed just metres from the crowd, making it by far the top Freestyle Show in Australia. Daredevil Dogs Stunt Show is our menagerie of colourful characters doing what they love with high diver dogs, the daredevil wheel, dogs appearing and disappearing from illusions, funny dogs, mischievous dogs and more. Entry is $20 for adults, $15 concession, $15 for 15 to 17 yearolds, with under 15 free. The Wood, Wine& Roses Festival runs from 10am11pm on February 22.

This is the revival of the musical that rocked and shocked a generation in the 1960s. Hair tells the story of a group of politically active, longhaired hippies living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. The musical is renowned for its profane depiction of the use of illegal drugs, treatment of sexuality, irreverence for the American flag and the controversial nude scene. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of rock musical.

As the weather heats up Mount Gambier optometrist, Brad Mann, is urging Australians who regularly play sport outdoor or those who enjoy being out and about in the sunshine to protect their eyes from harmful UV rays. “The effects of UV damage build over time and sports people and spectators who spend a lot of time outside are particularly at risk,” said Brad. “Children who regularly play outdoor sports in summer, such as cricket and tennis, without wearing sunglasses and a hat, are also at risk of

developing eye conditions in later years.” Mr. Mann said a common eye condition caused by UV exposure is pterygium - an overgrowth of fleshy tissue at the front of the eye. Other long-term effects of unprotected UV exposure include macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness and cataracts, according to Mr Mann. “The key to avoiding harmful UV damage is simple – protect your eyes from the sun,” he said. Mr Mann said sunglasses that comply with Australian Standards are not necessarily expensive and provide adequate

protection from the sun. “We are the local stockists of Maui Jim sunglasses which have an amazingly clear polarised lens,” he said. :”They can even be fitted with a client’s prescription, providing brilliant vision and protection from UV radiation. “It’s also wise to wear a hat and avoid the sun during the harshest hours of the day, between 10am and 3pm. “Your optometrist can give you the best advice about suitable UV protection to suit you and your lifestyle.”

Chapman Herbert Architects have been a part of the Limestone Coast construction landscape for more than three decades and the latest move is basically on the 34th anniversary of when company principals David Chapman and Stephen Herbert first opened their doors on February 1, 1981, in Helen Street. “We pooled our resources, our T squares, drawing boards, pencils and pens back in those days,” Stephen said. “We both mortgaged our houses at the time and took out a bank loan so we could pay ourselves and then on the first day we literally just sat there and waited for the phone to ring.” The phone did ring – and the jobs came. In 1985, Chapman Herbert Architects relocated to Gray Street and that’s where they celebrated their 30th anniversary back in 2011. In the early days it was David’s connections through his work at the Public Buildings Department that initially set the ball rolling and work started to steadily roll in and increase. mainly commercial work, with the wine industry proving to be one of the company’s biggest clients and the foundation to its sustained success. Balnaves was their initial client but then the cellar door projects and eventually winery design work came. And that was a job that literally walked in their door. “Doug had gone to an appointment and Annette was in the car and saw our sign,” Stephen said. “She came in and said are you blokes practical and that was the beginning of a long and fruitful association.” The cellar door and winery projects also saw the business called upon in other regions and even overseas when Southcorp was going hard with expansion – they worked in the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Yarra Valley, Orange, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Alongside the wine industry work, which are some of the favourite projects for Stephen, came Robe. “Robe gave us a chance to be exciting, people were prepared to be creative and a lot of our more interesting and exciting homes were built in Robe,” David said. He

now heads the Adelaide office of Chapman Herbert Architects. The steady stream of work has been accompnaied by a steady stream of accolades, with the heritage focussed projects, like The Eye Station, City Hall and the Main Corner have all been reocgnised over the journey. Stephen heads the Mount Gambier office, which also boasts another long serving team member, administration manager Melissa Ryan, who is coming up for 25 years with the architectural firm. A new era in legal and conveyancing services at Bersee Legal Herman Bersee Barristers & Solicitors has reached another milestone in its development as a growing legal practice which has serviced the South East for the past 35 years or so. A new era in legal and conveyancing services at Bersee Legal From page 26 He was fresh out of university and it was his first serious job. The move from the city to the country was driven by a desire to gain the experience that a general country legal practice would provide. “Initially I only intended to stay one or two years to gain experience before moving back to the city where I grew up but at every deciding moment new friendships and the friendly and supportive nature of living in a country town won out over the attractions that the city had to offer,” Herman said. On June 1, 1988, Herman took over the legal practice of George Stathopoulos, in Helen Street, Mount Gambier. Mr Stathopoulos had taken up a position educating law students in the practical aspects of legal practice in Adelaide and this created the opportunity for Herman to expand his legal practice beyond Naracoorte, into the largest commercial and retail centre in South Australia outside Adelaide. Business flourished in Mount Gambier and in early 1990 he relocated his residence there. In 2011, with additional legal staff in Mount Gambier, Herman took over the office of Jeffrey Vigar’s legal practice at 20 Ormerod Street, Naracoorte, the successor to one of the oldest legal practices in South Australia, Wallace & Co, which had conducted a legal practice there for many, many years. By 2013 the business of Herman Bersee Solicitor had well and truly outgrown the premises at 29 Bay Road.

A new era in legal and conveyancing services at Bersee Legal From page 27 Faced with a choice of extending and renovating the Bay Road premises or to relocate to accommodate the growing number of staff, the opportunity to acquire and move into the landmark heritage Executor Trustee building at 3 Penola Road was simply irresistible. The Trustee Building is purpose built as offices and with a facelift to the reception area the building has been a delight to move into. The building is very spacious with room upstairs for a library and boardroom with plenty of space to expand the business in the future. Changing the location and address of the legal practice provided the opportunity to reflect on and to reconsider the name under which the business had traded for the past 34 years. To reflect the team effort of the expanded business and the focus on conveyancing in the Mount Gambier and Millicent area, a new name of Bersee Legal Lawyers and Conveyancers seemed appropriate.Pauline Grieve, their registered conveyancer, has been involved in real estate and conveyancing since 1965 and she has brought a wealth of experience to this growing side of the business. Herman is also a Victorian legal practitioner and the business carries out conveyancing for properties both in South Australia and Victoria.

A new era in legal and conveyancing services at Bersee Legal From page 28 Having a registered conveyancer in our legal office provides the extra benefit to conveyancing clients of having legal advice available should there be a any hiccups with the transaction. Generally early advice will assist in allowing what for most people is one of the most important transactions in their lives to proceed smoothly. “Ebony Cunningham who joined the practice in 2012, together with James Nelson who joined our staff of legal practitioners more recently, together bring to my legal team a sense of renewal which made the change of the business name to BERSEE LEGAL Lawyers & Conveyancing a natural fit,” Herman said. Karen Howard, as one of the support staff, commenced her working career in the new location employed by Executor Trustee, 34 years ago and is now back supporting the team, having come full circle back to 3 Penola Road. The latest addition to our team, Lesley Koop, has been working as a legal secretary since 1977 commencing her career, coincidentally at Wallace & Co. in Naracoorte and having now returned to Mount Gambier to work in the business there. Kara Copetti, who has been working in the business as support staff now for the past eight years, has done a terrific job in managing the task of changing the location of the business and everything else involved with the change of the business name.

BASKETBALL Lakers Defending Country Basketball League Victoria South West Conference champions, the Mount Gambier Lakers, have earned the right to defend their 2012/13 title with a gritty 16 point victory over top ranked Warrnambool in one of two cutthroat semi finals at the weekend. The Lakers will now face Horsham, in what looms as a titanic struggle. The Lakers held sway last time the two met with a hard fought four point victory but the Hornets were missing one of their key playmakers. Saturday night was all about team work and determination according to coach Dallas Jeffree as the Lakers rebounded from a strong opening term by the home side to square things away by the half. The Seahawks enjoyed an 11 point quarter time buffer after scoring 25 points in the opening stanza but for the remainder of the contest, they scored no more than 15 points in any quarter. “They made that run at us early and we fell into a bit of hole but to the guys’ credit they dug deep in the second quarter to pull themselves back into it,” Jeffree said. “From that point on everyone who came into the game played their role and we were just so determined to make the grand final.” The Lakers started the CBL season slowly but have hit their straps in the past month. “I think playing all the top sides has really helped switch the guys on,” Jeffree said. Saturday night’s semi final

victory was also inspired by the lowly performance the Lakers put in against the Seahawks last time the two met. “They touched us up by 18 points and I think alot of it was about pride,” Jeffree said. Despite finishing the regular season sitting fourth, Jeffree was quick to point out to his charges that they were still the reigning champions. “I told the boys if another team wants it they’ll have to come and take it and to their credit they are not about to give it up without a fight,” he said. Horsham’s strength is their three classy guards but Jeffree believes the match will be won and lost inn the big man department. “Our guards can definitely match it with them and I believe we have the big bodies that can smash them all night,” he said. The biggest of them all - Mitch Mott - could be unavailable though, with his commitments with his new Adelaide based club - Centrals Districts - set to clash with the final. “He has a pre-season game with his Adelaide club but we are still hoping they might let him play with us,” Jeffree said. Matthew Parslow will return for the

GEORGIA HEADING TO NATIONALS Outstanding junior basketballer Georgia Green is heading to Western Australia from February 16-22 as part of the South Australian Under 20 Women’s State team. Having represented SA Country from Under 14 level, the step into the Under 20 South Australian line-up is testament to Georgia’s ability as she competed for a place against metropolitan based players. Georgia plays on a regular basis for Adelaide Hills club Eastern Mavericks and last season made her debut in the senior team, as well as competing in the under age grade, while in Mount Gambier she continues to shine for Cougars.

conference decider after missing the semi final, while Jak Ryan looms large as a key figure for the Lakers, if they are to defend their title. “We will go in with a kill or be killed mentality,” Jeffree said. “If there’s one thing I know for sure it’s that the boys won’t give up without a fight.” The conference final is Saturday night in Horsham. There’s a race with a difference this Saturday night at the Borderline Speedway when drivers and their cars don’t just compete on the track but off it as well. As part of the Tyson Perez Memorial, there is a $1000 cash prize for Best Presented Spud car. This is the fourth running of this event and support for the event increases every year. “Last year we got some pretty cool paint jobs and decals on wings,” said event organiser Mandy Searle. “Some guys go to a lot of effort to do something special for the event which is really cool. With the interest growing in designing tribute cars over the past couple of years we have had a couple of sponsors put up some serious money and we are excited to see what the competitors come up with - I just wonder how hard it will be to decide the lucky winner.”

State call up for star pitcher

It was the sixth, and according to the girl herself, the last, time Demons pitcher Maggie Breen has represented her State. After taking time out from State representative duties in the past couple of seasons to concentrate on her schooling and now university studies,

Maggie received a call last November asking her to become a part of South Australia’s Under 19 women’s softball team. With the promise she could train at home and just join the girls in the lead up to the National Championships in Canberra, from January

16-22, Maggie decided to resurrect her State career and lend a hand to the State line-up. “I practised for between two and three hours a day with mum and I had to put in a lot of work because I hadn’t been training as long as the other girls,” Maggie said. Debbie Breen is Maggie’s mother – a long time A grade player and coach for Demons in the Mount Gambier Softball League and coincidentally a catcher – the perfect practice partner for the pitcher. “Sending down as many pitches as you can is the only way to get stronger and better,” Maggie said. “And it was lucky I did the work as we played during that really hot spell and it was tough conditions to be at your best.” Maggie played alongside a group of girls with which she has enjoyed her five previous State team experiences. “We really are all friends and we really gelled and know how each other play,” Maggie said. “The thing I have loved about playing State is testing yourself

at a higher level and also making friends with so many other girls.” Once you get to Under 19 level, the game becomes very specialised and Maggie was only called on to pitch at the 2014 nationals. “When I was younger you would play other positions on the field as well and have a bat but not this time – you just focus on your pitching and that’s it,” she said. It was a tough championships for the SA line-up as it battled for the Elinor McKenzie Shield but they did improve across the event, winning a play-off against Victoria to finish fifth overall. “If we had played like we did in the second round in the first round I think we could have finished higher,” Maggie said. “We seemed to take a while to get going.” Maggie pitched all seven innings of the play-off contest, finishing with five strike outs and holding Victoria scoreless in the 6-0 SA victory. That game brought her total strike outs across the championships to 22 from the six games she

played, with the opening round 1-2 loss to the ACT her strongest performance on the mound, giving up only one hit for the clash. South Australia won three of their 10 pool games and then the play-off for fifth. Having not represented the State wince 2011 in the Under 17 line-up, Maggie was pleasantly surprised with how she adapted to the elevated standard required at a national championships. “I was happy with how I pitched especially in the tough conditions,” she said. Her nursing studies and part time job at The Barn now keep her very busy, which is why she believes Canberra was definitely her swansong, and she is grateful for the opportunities she has had to play for South Australia. Playing at a club where outstanding pitchers like Sally Anne Lewis (now Morgan); Jess Pettingill and most recently Michelle Lewis have played was a huge help to Maggie. “To watch these girls play and to train with them

and play with them gave me some really good role models and the confidence to go on and play at a higher level,” Maggie said. And, of course, there’s been the other great pitchers in the competition as she was growing up, including Wanderers’ Megan Ridding and Warriors’ Tanya Hood. Maggie is now concentrating on breaking Warriors stranglehold on the local A grade title with the finals set down for next month with the season decider on March 29.

greens continue to be a hive of activity The Millicent Bowling Club has been working its way through its club championship with three more decided in the past week. The men’s singles titles went the way of Steve Carnellor (top left), who secured a 25-14 win over John Scudds. The final started off as an even affair before Carnellor pulled away midway through the contest to secure the title by a comfortable 11 shots. Heather Carthew and Betty Pretty (centre left) have been crowned the ladies pairs champions. The duo secured the title in an entertaining final with runners-up Joan Greenwood and Maureen Elton at the end of last month. Iain Campbell and Rod Gibbs (bottom left) have been crowned Millicent Bowling Club’s men’s pairs champions, outlasting the duo of Derek Bowering and Terry Barnes. It was back to back titles for the Campbell-Gibbs pairing. The preliminary rounds, which attracted 50 bowlers, were held on January 25, with the title bout played out on Friday.

Australia Day in Millicent is celebrated in many ways, one of which is the annual Herb Henderson Open Men’s Fours, which is part of the club’s Australia Day carnival. 2014 was no exception as a total of 28 teams (112 bowlers) from all over the South East and further afield took part with the Mount Gambier RSL team of Ron Ploenges (skipper); Ralph Stafford; Ian MacIntosh and Deane Wilkinson. In fact, Mount Gambier RSL filled the top three placings at the prestigious event with a host club quartet finishing fourth. Other clubs represented were Millicent, Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell, Naracoorte, Penola and Kalangadoo with individual bowlers from Adelaide and Seymour, Victoria. Herb Henderson thanked everyone for both their support & giving himself & his wife, Ruth, the opportunity to host such a wonderful day. He also thanked the local businesses that sponsor this day, including Millicent Real Estate, Millicent Windows & Doors, EldersMillicent, Hamilton, Hateley & Associates, Elec Air, SMK Electrical,Wattle Range Funerals and Roger Buckmaster Carpentry. The Herb Henderson Open Men’s Fours is part of the Millicent Bowling Club’s Australia Day carnival. Millicent Bowling Club’s Australia Day carnival also hosted a Cosmopolitan

4s Skins with 18 teams (72 bowlers) taking to the greens. The unusual format saw teams play three, 12 end games with the top four teams then paying off in a major (1 v 2) and minor (3 v 4) final. The top two teams played the major final, competing for $100 per end over 10 ends, and the third and fourth teams played the minor final. They competed for $50 per end over 10 ends. To claim the prize money a team must win the end by two shots otherwise the money jackpots to the next end. The final end (end 10) is the exception, where one shot is all that is required to win the end. John Scudds (skipper), Bryan Vorwerk, Ian Ross and John Buhlmann took out the day. 166-168 Jubilee Highway West, Mount Gambier. Phone/ Fax 08 8725 8913 Autofest organisers have walked away from the Mount Gambier event onn the Australia Day weekend thrilled with entrant numbers and spectators. While the heat affected crowd numbers on Sunday, adding Friday night to the program was a rousing success and entrant numbers increased across the board in the driving competitions. Those drivers are also now following the Autofest circuit around the country, with many nominating for the upcoming Melbourne event as well. “They are coming from all over the place to compete and then joining us at other venues which is great,” organiser Les Adams said. “The Friday night worked really well and if we don’t clash with other events next year it would be great to extend into the Saturday night as well.” The display component of the event saw reduced numbers involved but the quality meant car lovers did not go away disappointed and the increase in drivers for the various competitions made sure there was plenty of high octane action.
