racing heads to Portland

Australia’s biggest field of nitro cars is heading to one of the country’s prettiest racetracks with the Aeroflow Outlaw show heading to Fuchs South Coast Raceway Portland, Victoria for February 1. With a massive line-up of 11 nitroburning funny cars, the Portland track will rumble to the tune of some 44,000 horsepower with

each car producing approximately 4000 horsepower. Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car series manager Steve Bettes was pleased with the development of the event. “These cars will be like nothing the fans have ever seen before,” he said. “Nitro racing is unique to drag racing and if you haven’t seen the spectacle of this type of drag racing

before – you can’t afford to miss it.” The racing cars are one thing but a fan favourite from previous events was undoubtedly the Nitro Sheriff wheelstanding funny car. Powered by a supercharged hemi engine, the ‘Sheriff’ completes the entire eighth mile pass with a wheelstand. “Everyone loves

the nitro cars but the kids love the wheelstanding car more than anything, with sparks and flames and the wheels in the air, it certainly is quite a show,” Bettes said. The weekend action starts on Friday with sportsman support classes qualifying from 2pm to 7pm followed by the massive Skids for Wishes burnout

competition from 7pm to 9pm, entry is $15 on Friday. The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Show features nitro racing and the wheelstander from 1pm Saturday and support classes from 10am. Photos courtesy of www.dragphotos. com.au and Banksbrotherz.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY What do you think boys & girls? by Robbie Tansel

Now showing MILLICENT NATIONAL TRUST CLOTHING COLLECTION MILLICENT MUSEUM, MILLICENT The Millicent National Trust has been gifted a huge collection of vintage, historical clothing and has now had time to compile the amazing group of outfits into a display in the Millicent Museum’s Horse Drawn Vehicle Display Shed.

Having a twenty month old in my house, I’m subjected to plenty of children’s television these days. I have to say I’m pretty disturbed by what our kids are sitting through. For those of you who don’t have children, or whose children are now grown up and watch other shows, you might have to Google some of these to see what I’m talking about. Or you could have a huge night on the turps, invite all of your friends back to your place after leaving the licensed venue at about 6am and then have an all day kids television-athon. I’m pretty sure most of

B&P

the shows would make much more sense in this state. Let’s start with Yo Gabba Gabba. Not only would this program be more enjoyable if you were intoxicated, I’m pretty sure the people making it are blotto. All of the characters are pretty weird but you don’t have to have much of an imagination to know that one of the characters looks like something that would be more appropriate on a hen’s night. Another one of little Shaquille’s favourites is Hi-5. I object to this show on several different levels. For starters it seems completely un-Australian to me. We’re not a high five country as far as I’m concerned. It would be a heaps better show if it was called G’day and

they finished each episode giving kids the thumbs up with a can of VB in their other hand. Am I right, kids? Apart from that objection they, like most children’s television actors, are way too enthusiastic. I object to enthusiastic people and I think they might be contributing to Shaquille’s grumpiness in the mornings. Don’t most people get up in the morning feeling like they need more sleep. The last thing anyone needs is to be confronted with people jumping around with big stupid smiles on their faces. It makes them look simple anyway. We watch a little Dora

the Explorer from time to time. Personally I can’t understand what she’s saying. She might as well be talking a different language. How about the fact that she’s got a map and a backpack that talk to her. I have enough problems with family members who can’t stop talking without various other items in my house telling me what to do. “Lake, forest, chocolate hill! .Lake, forest, chocolate hill!” I particularly object to the Wiggles. I don’t see how you can replace three of your four band members and still think you can exploit children around the world. They’re not the Wiggles anymore. They’re a cover band for children, doing all the Wiggle’s classics. I think the Wiggle who wanted to keep performing should have joined INXS. He’s looking for a band to keep performing with and they’ve been looking for a lead singer for many years now. They can’t keep either of the names though; they’d have to come up with something new. I suggest Excess Wiggling. Sometimes Donna puts Sesame Street on. I really don’t like this one. Plain and simple,I don’t trust puppets. I don’t care how cute you are Elmo. You’ve got a hand up your butt and that’s wrong. Curious George is another one of Shaq’s favourites. For those who don’t know the premise, there is a man who lives with his pet monkey. It didn’t end well for Michael Jackson and I don’t see it ending well for the man in the yellow hat. Like I said, I don’t enjoy any of it but I’m going to persist with it because for those 20 minutes I’m not having to spot for a midget trying to scale a television, bookshelf, or china cabinet. If you’ve got a favourite kiddie’s show you think I’d enjoy, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

ADVERTORIAL I BETTER HEALTH REMEDIES

Take your health into your hands

Healthcare today is becoming so expensive. Our medical system is buckling under the weight of burgeoning chronic diseases and doctors rooms are flowing to over capacity. There is a lot people can do to prevent being caught up in an over-burdened health system. Preventative medicine is the answer and is crucial. Stepping up and being accountable for your health brings a great sense of freedom and power and that’s where medical herbalist Susan Grinsell comes in. She has established Better Health Remedies in Mount Gambier and is looking to contribute to making the region healthier.

Susan’s story “Five years ago I was heading down the path to a myriad of health problems. I was obese and a possible candidate for diabetes; had moderately high blood pressure; was oestrogen dominant; stressed out and had no energy. That all changed when I met a most beautiful and caring naturopath on the Gold Coast. She was passionate about herbs and none of her treatments were unrealistic or radical. She too had ‘walked the talk” herself so understood the ups and downs that I would face. After sorting out my hormones, my weight began to drop and along with sound diet habits and exercise, I dropped 30kilograms. During this time I chose to see her for a 1½ hour consult each month because I found it supportive and therefore beneficial. Before and after pathology tests taken

six months apart was proof that the treatment had efficacy. I still have some more weight to lose but I know I have the tools to control my weight at last. I now have oodles of energy, normal blood pressure, normal hormone levels and don’t rely on any pharmaceuticals. Any supplements I do take are minimal (mostly for metabolism) and above all are side effect free and safe. The rest of my health is achieved through clean eating, lots of water, daily exercise, plenty of sleep and meditation. I was so impressed with my results I went and did a bachelor degree in Health Science, Western Herbal Medicine. This complemented my previous training in nursing. The results I saw in my student clinics also reinforced the benefits and power of plant medicine. Experience has also shown me that one size

does not fit all. Herbal mixtures can be tailor made to each individual case. Spending time with my client allows me to assess what the driving factors are and I can individualise a treatment protocol. If you feel you are ready to make a difference in your life and regain your quality of health, I’d love to share my knowledge

with you. Let me help you be the best you can be. Phone today for an appointment on (08)8724 8111. I chose to move from a hectic Gold Coast seachange to a tranquil treechange after falling in love with picturesque Mount Gambier when on holiday last year. I love how friendly and down to earth the locals are.

My wish is to help and educate the community as to how herbal medicine can benefit their health and well being.” Below - Medical herbalist Susan Grinsell has set up Better Health Remedies in Mount Gambier - a revolution in health care.

WHAT IS A MEDICAL HERBALIST? A medical herbalist undergoes a three year Bachelor of Health Science (Western Herbal Medicine) degree before registering as a qualified medical herbalist We undergo continual professional education so as to keep up with current evidence based research. The chief aim of the herbalist is to assist the client in achieving and maintaining wellness, not to simply provide symptomatic treatment for specific conditions. Most clients present with a disease already in progress and its fundamental to look deeper and beyond the disease to find the underlying systems that may be out of balance. This is known as the philosophy as holism. In order to get the whole health picture of a client, the practitioner will hold a lengthy consultation of usually 1 1/2 hours. For many clients they find this a wonderful experience as they feel for the first time in years a health practitioner is taking time and really listening to them. Natural therapists love to gather the pieces together and find the missing bits to the health puzzle. Herbalists are able to prescribe formulations specific to individual needs. Herbal preparations may include teas, tinctures, extracts, tablet, capsules, creams or ointments. It is the chemical compounds within the plants that exert their actions on the body. Herbal medicine is still very commonly prescribed in Europe even by doctors and is often the preferred options over pure medical compounds (pharmaceuticals). Herbalists not only prescribe herbal medicines but also offer appropriate interventions regarding nutrition, lifestyle and exercise that the client can adopt to manage their own health. This invites you to be the best you can be.

Saturday, February 14 - From 10am St Mary’s Aged Care Facility 71 Boandik Tce, Mount Gambier. Craft, garden, bric-a-brac and cake stalls with activities for the children.

Beverley Mcllroy was given a brief reprieve from her volunteer role in the Rotary Coffee Van at Portland’s Australia Day celebrations so she could be announced as the 2014 Glenelg Shire Citizen of the Year. She joined other award recipients in celebrating Australia Day, with Portland one of three locations offering Glenelg Shire Council events. Ms Mcllroy was described by Mayor Cr John Northcott, who attended the Casterton celebrations, as a staunch advocate for equality in society and in the workplace, who has supported, mentored and encouraged young people to realise their full potential. Cr Northcott said, with more than 40 years of service to the Portland Community, Ms Mcllroy was a very worthy recipient of this award. “In 2012 she was asked to join the State Advisory Panel that focuses on the delivery of Drug and Alcohol Services throughout Victoria,” he said. “This shows the high esteem that she is held in by her colleagues and those in State Government.” The 2014 Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Portland’s Miranda Jones, who has become an inspiring role model to youth, disadvantaged young people, and adults alike and has earned the respect

Shire hands out Australia Day honours and admiration from her peers. “Overcoming many adversities while growing up and taking on the role of carer for her siblings, due to her mother’s disability, this young citizen is a worthy recipient of this award,” Cr Northcott said. “Through the Portland re-Engagement program she found the motivation to continue her schooling and hopes to complete her VCE in 2014 with the goal of becoming a psychologist. “She was previously a participant in the ‘Local Eyes’ photographic project coordinated by United Way Glenelg and gained one of the three Legacy positions Australia wide on a voyage with the Young Endeavour in 2013, travelling from Sydney to Melbourne along with 23 other young people, and she also participated in the 2013 Future Leaders of Industry Program, which cemented her love of psychology.” For the first time a Senior Citizen of the Year was awarded, with two recipients deemed worthy of the recognition – June Holmes, who accepted her award in Casterton and Hazel Short, who accepted her award in Portland. “Following

careful consideration of the nominations received for the Senior Citizen of the Year 2014, the Australia Day Advisory Committee decided that there were two nominees who were equally worthy and the decision to split them was just too difficult,” Cr Northcott said. “Mrs Holmes has dedicated her life to her community of Digby and family. “As a mother of four Mrs Holmes was involved in fundraising for school, football and netball clubs and now a grandmother of eight children and great grandmother of ten, she continues this involvement. “Over the years she has encouraged knitting for charities in Australia and overseas, cooks in support of all fund raising events at the hall, raises money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and supports the Cancer Council by raising funds particularly for breast cancer. “Meanwhile, Mrs

Short started as a Telecare volunteer at Portland District Health 26 years ago, making phone calls each fortnight to provide re-assurance and social support to Home and Community Care clients living at home. “Many other community organisations benefit from her help and these include Portland Cable Trams where she spends one day a week as a tram conductor, Portland Uniting Church as the convenor of the casserole bank and a Lifeline volunteer, Portland Senior Citizens at a bingo caller. “After the passing of her husband 10 years ago she formed a widow’s group, which meets group meets monthly for a meal, guest speakers and the social connection, and she continues to convene this group.” Finally, the Glenelg Shire 2014 Community Group of the Year was awarded to Portland Surf Life Saving Club. “From its beginnings at Henty Beach Portland in 1933, the Club has evolved to encompass a wide range of activities, including beach patrols, offshore rescue service, youth development, junior activities (nippers), training and assessment competition, to name a few,” Cr Northcott said. “The club has developed a professional working relationship with a range of emergency services to provide the area with a reliable and professional marine rescue service and the group continues to provide support and water safety to school groups from the district and further afield. “Volunteering is a big part of Portland Surf Life Saving Club and that has continued for 80 years, fostering the community spirit of helping others, whether it be other clubs or community groups that need some extra safety or assistance in the water.” At the Casterton Australia Day event, 10 shire residents were also welcomed by the Mayor as Australian Citizens after taking the Pledge of Commitment.

office for new member

Member for Barker Tony Pasin has started the New Year in a new electorate office at 2A Helen Street, Mount Gambier, to provide electoral services and support to residents of the Lower South East. Mr Pasin (pictured), who grew up in and around Mt Gambier, operated his business there and whose family still farms in the district, said it was his priority to ensure the lower South East had a federal Electorate Office presence.“The people of Mount Gambier and the Lower South East have not had a formal federal electorate office in the district for over 15 years,” Mr Pasin said. “Given Mount Gambier is the largest population centre in the electorate of Barker, I thought it was critical to provide residents with a federal parliamentary presence. “The Mt Gambier Electorate Office is also accessible to residents of the wider lower South East from Naracoorte and Kingston South East, through to Port MacDonnell. “Although the electorate office

is in a temporary location, I thought it was important to establish an immediate presence to provide services and support to the South East.” Mr Pasin’s electorate office can assist residents with a wide range of enquiries, services and support from assistance dealing with federal Government departments, answering questions about legislation and policy, raising community concerns or helping to arrange messages of congratulations for significant birthdays and wedding anniversaries. Residents are encouraged to visit the electorate office at 2A Helen Street, Mount Gambier, or alternatively call the office on either (08)8724 7730 or 1300 723 935.

FEATURE ADVERTORIAL I MEET OUR LOCAL EXPERTS

Grout Pro “We are the only business in the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria specialising in tile and grout restoration and we offer a cost effective solution to make your tiles look brand new again.” Noel Wood Your Cleaning Expert GroutPro South East is ready to help restore your bathroom or kitchen to its former glory. Established in the region almost 12 months ago, Groutpro can transform your wet areas without the hassle and cost of a complete renovation. Grout specialist Noel Wood is now working alongside his new wife Ellen - the couple married late last year - as she runs the office, as well as heading out on jobs. Groutpro South East has also welcomed another new member to their team - Antonio (Anton)

Raso. A friend of the couple, he attended their November wedding, fell in love with Mount Gambier and decided to relocate. A glazer by trade, Anton has vast experience in showers and silicone work, bringing even more expertise to the Groutpro team, leaving his home and job in Atherton, in Far North Queensland, to now call Mount Gambier home. GroutPro South East can repair and restore your existing tiles by cleaning and colour sealing the grout between them. “People can try and clean the dirt off by scrubbing and scrubbing, but once it is stained, it’s stained and if you use the wrong type of cleaners you can damage it,” Mr Wood said. “We clean and recolour it to match the tiles, then seal it, which looks fantastic and lasts up to 15 years.” A selection of 89 colours ensures a perfect match with the colour of the tiles. In addition, GroutPro South East offers a range of associated services - from the sealing of new grout, to the replacement of broken tiles and mouldy silicone. Mr Wood said restoring tiles was an extremely affordable way of rejuvenating your bathroom or shower floor. “It costs only a quarter to a fifth of the price to restore the tiles than to replace them,” he said. “Many people think they need to replace their whole bathroom, but after our restoration process they are amazed at the difference it makes and say it looks brand new.” To complete your bathroom makeover, GroutPro South East also offers an effective shower door cleaning service. “If you have a glass shower door that is dirty and stained, it

can be very hard to clean,” Mr Wood said. “Many people think this is all soap scum but it’s not - it’s also minerals from the water and instead of wasting time scrubbing all day, we can clean it for you and seal it, which makes it so much easier to clean - it makes a huge difference.” Kitchens and bathrooms are major selling points when a house is placed on the market. “An inexpensive tile and grout restoration may make all the difference when you are striving to clinch the deal,” Mr Wood said. “Or if you have just purchased a new property but feel that it needs a tile renovation, consult GroutPro South East before you act, a professional clean and colour could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.” GroutPro South East offers a free no obligation quote and welcomes enquiries from across the Limestone Coast. Groutpro South East offers professional tile and grout cleaning ; grout re-colouring (new and OLD); tile and grout sealing and repairs; silicone replacement; tile anti-slip treatment and shower glass restoration. Exciting plans for Heywood Aquatic Service

Heywood pool users could one day be the envy of the shire with a uniquely designed interactive playground proposed as part of an overhaul of Glenelg Shire Council’s aquatic facilities. The long term plan would include a range of interactive aquatic and leisure features, including water sprays, large tipping buckets, water cannons and bubblers, with the hope of boosting the community’s usage of the out-dated facility. A review of the Heywood Outdoor pool,

completed as part of the Glenelg Aquatic Services Strategy at the end of last year, indicated that it was the least used of the three regional aquatic facilities. The strategy was prepared based on providing a network of complementary aquatic facilities and services across the shire, with it recognised that the unique characteristics of each facility and the community it served needed to be considered in any long-term future

direction taken by council. While the development of a viable Master Plan for all of council’s aquatic facilities must be achieved before any significant changes are set in place, Cr Northcott said he wanted to quash any suggestion that the Heywood facility wouldn’t remain a priority to council into the future. “It’s important that we boost numbers at the pool to ensure the facility is used to its full potential,” he said. “A consultation process found the pool was primarily used as a place to ‘cool off’ during summer months with little use

of the 50-metre pool for lap swimming or training. “The Swimming Club that was located at the facility disbanded about two years ago due to lack of interest.” As well as the interactive playground, the future wish-list for the Heywood community, following the initial consultation, includes potential to retrofit the existing 50-metre pool, the creation of a multipurpose indoor program room, upgraded change and amenities and an upgraded reception area. During the winter months it’s proposed that the water be turned off to the interactive playground and the areas used as a dry playground. “This could be linked and supervised as part of the skate facility located adjacent to the current swimming pool and a small indoor community centre,” Cr Northcott said. “Such a facility would be an attractor to the Heywood township and would link to the success of the skateboard park. Cr Northcott said as part of any future Master Plan, developed from the current draft strategy, capital funding upgrades would need to be budgeted to continue to improve the water features and play equipment and maintain amenities, spectator facilities and outdoor relaxation and social surrounds. Glenelg Aquatic Services Strategy is currently on display at the Portland Council Chambers and on council’s website for community feedback. The community and interested stakeholders are encouraged to prepare a written submission for council’s consideration. Responses will be received until 5 pm on Friday, February 28.

BORDERLINE SPEEDWAY Lines Steve Lines is the most successful local sprintcar driver of the past decade but his home track’s one stand alone title had always eluded him. But last Thursday night he broke the hoodoo and claimed his inaugural King’s Challenge title. Given Lines’ impressive, bordering on impeccable, form coming into the January 23 event, it would have almost been cruel if he had been denied top spot on the podium again. It was his time to shine and he did, staving off a spirited charge from American star, Tim Kaeding to win. The pair

breaks through for dream hometown title

started the A Main on the front row, with quick time man Kaeding off the pole, however it was Lines in the Hall Motorsport Wilson Trailer car who took the ascendency on the high banks of the Mount Gambier track. There were yellow flag stoppages, testing the concentration of all drivers but eventually Lines was able to hold out Kaeding to take the win from Cameron Gessner with American Brad Sweet fourth and Adelaide’s Luke Dillon rounding out the five. Some of the stars of the show were undone by the Glenburnie track with

Shane Stewart in the Milwaukee Power Tools Monte Motorsport #7 retiring and the other unlucky #7 being the Eastcoast Pipelines Racing machine of Wednesday night’s Avalon winner, Robbie Farr, who had to pull out with a deflated left rear tyre midway through the affair. Australian Champ, James McFadden in the #1 Totally Workwear car was running toward the top five before a spin on a restart sent him rear of field. Racing at Warrnambool rounded out the Australia Day weekend.

VETERAN PLAYERS HONOURED The 2014 Millicent Bowling Club took the opportunity to honour two of its longest serving bowlers with their veteran and super veteran badges at the recent prelminary rounds of the club’s singles championship. Club president Max Blacketer presented Bill Schuller (below centre) with his super veteran badge and Arnold Damhuis (below bottom) with his veteran badge.

CRICKET West Cricket SA is still unable to definitively confirm it but chances are West Gambier’s 2/267 scoreline in its comprehensive victory over Penola could not only be a State record but an international record for a total in the bash and crash form of the game. Playing a catch up fixture from the heat affected round the week before, the Roos won the toss and is their want, batted first. History shows West Gambier prefer to defend a total, chasing, even low totals, is not their forte. A depleted Penola line-up missing, among others, skipper George Kidman, was faced with a

Gambier blasts its way into the record books rampaging West Gambier, fresh from the euphoria of defeating reigning Barber Shield champions South Gambier in a two day fixture at the weekend. And no side likes to face the big hitting opening duo of Nick Martin and Shane Stevens and the depleted Penola attack that also missed key strike bowler Brad Maney, not only struggled to contain the aggressive duo, they also bowled 20 wides, which effectively gave the Roos another three overs from which to score. The nine run opening over from talented stalwart Michael McGurk seemed excessive and yet when you consider the

fourth over went for 19 runs and the fifth went for 18, it was economical. Sitting at 55 for no loss after five overs was alarming and yet not cause for panic – until the sixth over went for 18 and the seventh for 14. To see West Gambier pass the century mark before the halfway mark was always going to make life tough. West had lost the wicket of Martin – who is often at the crease for a good time not a long time – with his innings that included eight fours and a six as his only scoring shots in an innings of 38. Jase Bateman’s part time bowling snuck through the almost non-existent

defensive mindset of the talented and entertaining stroke player but Stevens continued his assault on the attack. In the previous round, Stevens had looked set for a century before holing out and the same could be said of his innings on Wednesday night. Boasting 10 boundaries and five sixes, triple figures looked almost inevitable but after some dropped catches, experienced campaigner and stand in skipper Curt Evans snaffled a catch off the entertaining batsman and Stevens departed on Australian cricket’s superstitious number – 87. Interestingly, that is the score West was when Martin departed. Of course when Stevens returned to the sheds West already had 196 on the board and four overs to play. At the crease was the century maker from the Barber Shield action at the weekend – Jason McCrae – and he turned out to be a man on a mission. His unbroken third wicket stand with skipper Bray Stephenson saw “Barney” as he is affectionately known by his team mates, belt 58 runs in the four overs after Stevens’ dismissal, affording his skipper limited access

to the strike as Stephenson (13) had the best seat in the house to what turned out to be McCrae’s second unbeaten ton in five days. A clean striker of the ball and not afraid to play the innovative strokes, McCrae’s unbeaten 106 included seven fours and eight sixes. There was no respite for the depleted Penola attack and after being carted around Malseed Park, part time bowlers Jase Bateman and Michael McGurk fronted up in their more accustomed roles of leading Penola’s efforts with the bat but as

The international record is 260 by Sri Lanka in 2007 against Kenya. And while 9/155 is a respectable score in many cases in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association Twenty20 competition, Penola had to suffer the humiliation of a 112 run defeat. The following night the Roos took on East Gambier and compiled 8/199 with Nick Martin just falling short of making it back to back West century makers when he fell for 93 and East was no match for the in form West line-up, dismissed for 96.

motor hospital fundraiser a huge success

Portland District Health’s inaugural twilight summer market has been a success, raising almost $2500. The market received great support from stallholders and attracted hundreds of visitors on Friday January 17. The money will go towards plans to redevelop two rooms in the hospital’s sub-acute ward into a new special care room which will provide facilities for palliative care, caring for people with dementia and others needing close monitoring. A golf day on March 28 will also raise funds for the redevelopment and equipment and comfort items for the special care room and other areas within PDH. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the evening market was a great success with outside stall holders, service clubs and PDH staff and departments involved. “The weather was kind to us and the feedback from the public who attended and by others in the community has been extremely positive,” Ms Giles said. “PDH would like to say a big thankyou to all who participated in any way, including preparations prior to the event and during the event itself. About $2450 was raised. The market included cake stalls, jewellery, movie posters, plants, books, food stalls, fairy floss and a white elephant stall.
