KNTFL Baker

the hero in breakthrough victory

It was music to the ears of all diehard supporters when the Kingston Football Club theme sang was sung with gusto after the A grade football on Saturday. The Saints defeated Border Districts on June 30 last year and have had to wait almost a year to Saturday’s clash with Kybybolite to again taste victory. it has been a lean few years for the once competitive Saints and was just reward for Meningie based coach Tim Richards, who

drove two and a half hours just to get to the game. The Saints got over the line by a solitary point, thanks to some individual brilliance from Tyson Baker, who emerged the hero. Baker won the ball in the centre of the ground with precious seconds left on the clock. He took on tackles, breaking two, before setting sail for home from just on fifty, The ball bounced in the goal square and rolled through, handing the visitors the one point victory. It has been a different Saints line-up this season. They have been kicking scores, never falling below 10 goals and not suffering the same demoralising massive losses of the past three seasons. “The last month we have been playing some reasonable football,” Richards said. “We’ve been getting close to sides but now we’ve jumped a hurdle I hope and it’s a sign

of things to come.” The coach would like to see a couple more wins added to this breakthrough victory, although the next three games they face Mundulla, Naracoorte and Bordertown which will make life tough in the near future. The match followed a similar script to many others this season. Kingston right in the contest at half time, leading by 10 points but by three quarter time they trailed Kybybolite by 17 points and it looked like another honourable loss was on the cards. “We’ve got close to teams before and decided that’ll do but at three quarter time I said getting close won’t do today, it’s just not going to wash,” Richards said. “I basically asked them to show some leadership.” At the 20 minute mark of the final quarter the signs were still ominous as the Saints still trailed by three goals. Not surprisingly, Jamie

Austin was the man leading from the front, not ust in the frenetic final quarter but all day. “He’s the Joel Selwood of our football club,” Richards said. “He is so inspirational - he’s not a big talker but he shows by example.” Key tall Sam Braidwood was also instrumental in the final quarter rally. He moved himself into the ruck late in the third quarter and for all of the last and was critical in giving his side first use of the football at clearances. Centre half back Matt Higgs was another four quarter performer who just kept getting the job done, while young wingman Josh Gluyas capped off a stellar month on the field with a solid, hard running performance. Another club icon Ashley Stenner also played a pivotal role in the victory, with his quality play and his on field leadership. It did come at a price

for the Saints with Stenner doing significant ligament damage and the in form Jesse Curkpatrick breaking his collar bone in the hard fought victory. It was also the final game for Todd Read, who is now off overseas. “It was a character building win for the boys,” Richards said. “We had a game plan and we executed and it worked so hopefully we can go on from here.” Around 15 players from Saturday’s winning side are under 21 years of age and the is a core group of eight or nine youngsters that have come right through the club ranks together. Both the coach and president Scott Gluyas are hopeful this group will be a solid foundation on which to rebuild the Saints. The club also has a number of talented senior colts, some of who have already had some senior action. “We’ve got a fairly young side with a good dozen local young fellas that we

hope stick around for a while,” Gluyas said. “They played up like they had won a grand final.” The president said the win was just reward for a group that has been significantly more competitive in 2013. “At the start of the season we wanted to be more competitive and we’re seeing that,” he said. “There were certainly a few smiles around the place Saturday and that’s good to see.” It was a round of narrow upsets with Mundulla getting a two point victory over Penola and Keith toppling reigning premiers Bordertown by 17 points, the Roosters’ first defeat of 2013.
