has been organised to invigorate the running community during the sport’s typical ‘offseason’. The festivities will centre around Portland’s Ploughed Field, opposite the hospital on Bentinck Street. “Many people have a hard time staying motivated during the winter”, said Portland Runner’s Club spokesperson Tony Curran. “A lowkey winter running event is an excellent way to motivate runners, and offers a fun,fitness-focussed social gathering. “We warmly welcome all runners, including those from neighbouring towns and cities, and we hope to harness some of the enthusiasm and energy of the youngsters for the free 1km children’s event.” Parents are welcome to run alongside their child in the junior category, which will finish the day’s proceedings at around 10.45am. Prizes are on offer for the longer events, with a

discounted $10 entry fee for those who preregister by 5pm Friday, June 21, at Portland’s YMCA or Lineker’s Leather. Registrations will also be taken on the morning of the event for $15, or by emailing curradarra@westvic. The event showcases some of the town’s popular running routes, including the Fawthrop Lagoon and the Portland foreshore. The 14.5km ‘lighthouse to lighthouse’ course begins at the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, takes in the Portland Lighthouse, and

finishes at the Ploughed Field, encompassing a hilly but picturesque scenic route. Buses will leave from Portland’s Ploughed Field at 8.30am to transport runners to the starting line for a 9am start, with a ‘first in, best dressed’ format for bus seats. The 5km and 9km loops start at 9.30am at the Ploughed Field. The Portland Runners Club currently has 75 members who meet on Wednesday and Friday evenings, and Sunday mornings, to share their interest in recreational

running for fitness and wellbeing. The club is also responsible for organising the popular 3 Bays Marathon in November, which will this year celebrate its 30th year, and assisting with the local triathlon competition. For more information on the Winter Solstice Fun Run on Sunday, June 23, or the Portland Runners Club, please contact Tony Curran on 0418 132 052 or email curradarra@ Above - Portland Runner’s Club members Nettie Fishwick, David Johnstone, Andrew McDonald, and Haibo Wang encourage fellow runners to lace up their shoes for the upcoming fun run on June 23.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY I continue to get emails from my loyal friends out there in Lifestyle1 world. This is one I received this week.

Ethical dilemma by Robbie Tansel

“Dear Robbie, Things in my life have been pretty tough lately. Do you have bad days? What do you do to

deal with problems in your life? Annilei from Allendale. Well Annilei, I do have plenty of problems

in my life. Isn’t it obvious? Presumably you’ve read this article before and know that my life is one big mess. Instead of counselling, which I can’t afford, the good people at Lifestyle1 let me vent. That’s one of the ways I deal with my issues. Your email reached me at a particularly relevant time though as I’ve had one of those weeks where things just don’t seem to go right. The oven at the Tansel mansion broke down on the weekend. I decided to go get takeaway. I planned to go through the drive through at the fast food outlet I’d chosen so decided that wearing uggies would be just fine. Imagine my distress and the ethical dilemma presented then when I found that the drive through was broken. Do I get out in ugg boots and look like a bogan or do I starve? By this point I was

pretty darnn hungry so I decided to go inside bare foot and look like a homeless person instead. People thinking you’re homeless is less embarrassing than people thinking you’re a bogan. Things didn’t get any better when I purchased a Caramello Koala. That should have been a moment of joy and pleasure but instead it was soured when I opened it. The Caramello Koala had been broken. The

caramel had leaked out of the koala and was now smeared all over the inside of the wrapper, and the outside of the koala. I know. You can never retrieve all of the caramel off of the inside of the Caramello Koala wrapper, and the outside of the koala is all sticky when you try to eat it. Needless to say I was completely devastated. One bright spot came with my work place footy tipping competition. I

tipped Collingwood. Collingwood lost. I still felt like a winner. So how do I deal with the disappointment in my life? Well I like to think about the fact that there are people in the world who have it tougher than me. If I can’t think of anyone I just watch Celebrity Apprentice or The Block and I think about what it would be like to be an attention starved, oxygen thief like this lot. One thing I find quite calming is making lists. What job would I rather be doing? Where would I rather be than wherever I am at that point in time? Who’s death would improve my life? In what ways could I bring about these people’s deaths? One of my other favourite ways of dealing with disappointment is breaking things. Not things which are valuable or other people’s things. I just go and buy a carton of eggs, climb my neighbours gum tree and start dropping them. Or I clean out my fridge of dirty, rotten, old food and climb on my house roof and hurl it off. As stupid as it sounds it is visually very entertaining and the sight of whatever it is splatted or broken on the ground is very soothing. Trust me. Anyway Annilei, I hope this helps a little, but just think. Things could be worse. You could be Eddie McGuire. If you want me to help you with any of the problems in your life, email me at robbietansel@

SE round seven award winners

announced It is getting to the business end of the inaugural Sports SE Sports Star Awards, with round seven recipients handed out last Friday. The athlete award was a family affair with talented junior golfing brothers Caleb and Jhett Perry sharing the spoils. Caleb was introduced to the game of golf when he was two years old. He would walk around the Terang golf course with Darryl, his dad, and his grandfather while they played their Sunday morning game of golf. He received his first golf clubs when he was

seven and hasn’t looked back yet. In 2010 the family relocated to Mount Gambier and made it a priority to join the Mount Gambier Golf Club. Caleb and Jhett became junior members and in three years, Caleb’s handicap went from 34 to 5 and Jhett’s handicap of 33 went to nine. Caleb’s is now three and Jhett’s is five. In the past two years Caleb has been the SAPSASA U12 State Champion, the Naracoorte Junior Open Champion, the Mount Gambier Junior Open Champion (included two holes in one), Millicent Junior Open Champion,

Currently, he is playing A1 Pennant Golf and is undefeated. LOCAL Festival

future secured thanks to three year funding deal

The Rotary Club of Portland Bay has secured three years of funding for the Upwelling Festival from Glenelg Shire Council’s Triennial Grants for Iconic Tourism Events. Rotarian and festival chairperson Patsy Moore said the funding will help the festival committee to forward plan. “The $5000 each year for the next three years means we can not only begin to firm up activities for this year but we can now be confident we have

the finance to book and negotiate with suppliers much earlier for future festivals,” Ms Moore said. “Also, along with two more years of funding from Pacific Hydro, for the first time we are in a position to guarantee ongoing salary for a coordinator. This is very exciting and extremely positive for the sustainability of the event.” The funding also secures three years of in kind support from Council for services like road closures for the street

parade, site preparation and waste facility access. The Upwelling Festival will be held on Saturday November 2 this year on the Portland Foreshore and planning is well underway, including the appointment of a new festival coordinator. Festival director Susie Lyons, is stepping aside to volunteer on festival art projects and grant applications and Gerri Torpy has been appointed to support the work of the committee. “As a founding member of the Upwelling Festival, I am so proud of what the festival has achieved within the four years it has been staged in Portland,” Ms Lyons said. “The positive support the event receives in the short time it has existed has been outstanding and a testament to the amazing volunteers from Rotary and beyond who all invest their passion, time and belief in such a great festival for Portland. “Under the leadership of Rotary, the Festival is in great shape and we are

thrilled to have Gerri, with all her experience and enthusiasm, on board.” Gerri Torpy is an event and conference manager with more than 12 years in the events industry in Melbourne and overseas. In its fifth year, the festival is based on the theme of the Bonney Upwelling and is managed by the Rotary Club of Portland Bay. The Bonney Upwelling is the epic natural ocean occurrence that powers a seven month (November to May) feeding frenzy of tuna, crayfish, giant crabs, squid, fish, seabirds, seals krill and blue whales. Supporting an incredibly rich ecological food web, the Upwelling is at its greatest off the coast of Portland and is the cornerstone of our lucrative local fishing and tourism industry. The free day time event on the foreshore celebrates what is unique about Portland and the community and showcases an important local environmental phenomenon. For more information go to the

Dogs in the slow lane

As we head into the colder months, you may have noticed your old dog is getting slow to stand up in the mornings, or even reluctant to walk or exercise longer distances to what they are used to. Sometimes, these are just signs of varying degrees of lameness, which would be consistent with canine osteoarthritis. What causes osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis (OA) is simply inflammation of the joint with bony involvement. It can arise from many causes, but the majority come from wear and tear. OA can also arise from conditions such as limb deformities, infections and in rarer instances, tumours and autoimmune diseases. What can be done about osteoarthritis? After a correct diagnosis is made of why your dog is lame, Osteoarthritis (OA) therapy usually involves a multipronged approach. Weight loss “Your dog needs to shed a few kilos” is

Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) “The Nurofen of the dog world” are the mainstay of arthritis therapy and most, if not all, dogs with OA are placed on them. NSAIDs usually have the most dramatic and immediate effect in easing signs of OA. Pentosan Polysulfate is an injectable medication, which can help in halting further cartilage destruction.

the overplayed track that you hear from the vets. However, as niggling as that tune may be, the importance of easing the load on your dog’s joint can’t be highlighted enough. Some dogs have been “cured” of OA by weight loss alone, thus forgoing expensive medications, or revisits to the vets. So, if your dog is tipping the scales to the heavy side, feeding them less will not only save you money, but will also improve their quality of life - a win/ win situation. Changes in exercise Usually, reductions have to be made to the exercise regime and this will occur automatically. They will let you know that they can no longer do 2 laps around the lake. This can be a frustrating and vicious cycle when one is trying to achieve weight loss in their dog, but can’t burn the calories because they are too sore to exercise. Non-Steroidal Anti-

These are a series of injections, which must be given at the vets. Nutraceuticals Omega-3 fatty acids, hyaluronic acid (shark cartilage) and glucosamine, are feed additives, which can act as building blocks for the joint. For dogs, only anecdotal evidence exists for the benefits of shark cartilage and glucosamine, but omega-3s have been

shown to be effective. Other therapies include physical therapy, joint injections and even stem cell therapy.

ADVERTORIAL I GARDENARIUM The light Autumn rains have been wonderful for Autumn foliage displays and the winds have been kind, allowing the leaves to hang on the trees well in to winter. With winter firmly in our grip it is time to turn our attention to planting dormant, deciduous ornamental trees and fruit trees. At this time of the year it is an ideal time to plant as tree nurseries can dig from the ground the trees they have grown because they have ‘shut down’ for the winter period. This is also when the trees are at their hardiest. The largest range of varieties is generally also available, even though at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees we do try to have a broad cross section of varieties

It’s all about trees

all year round. Our name does not only mean we stock only” advanced” trees, we also have the full range of bare root trees in winter. This year we have two tree catalogues, one for fruit trees and one for ornamental trees and they are available in store now, full of glossy pictures of all the varieties we stock, along with tips and advice on planting. They showcase all the new varieties of ornamental trees and fruit trees for this season, as well as some of our roses. As the Fleming’s stockist of quality trees for the Limestone Coast and the only nursery in Mount Gambier, we offer a minimum 20% discount on all trees and fruit trees and we are stockists of the

Plantnet Range of trees also – see our website for full details and hurry before we sell out with pre orders. New varieties for this year include some long awaited varieties, in particular the new Pink Snow Showers Weeping Cherry, a sister to the hugely popular Snow Fountains, which is a more compact growing variety, ideal for smaller garden, courtyards and even pots. It has long weeping growths with masses of flowers down the entire length of the branches. The other new weeping trees that we have been inundated with orders for is the Cercis Lavender Twist - a new weeping form with twisted branches that are smothered in pea shaped pink flowers in spring and is related to the popular Forest Pansy. Alford Blaze is a new and improved plane tree and has all the wonderful attributes of the London Plane, but instead the foliage turns a stunning red, orange and purple colour in autumn, rather than the dull brown of the normal plane. Very hardy,

this is ideal for driveways and avenue plantings. They are also tolerant of a wide range of soils and climatic conditions. The New Japanese Snowbells (Styrax) is simply stunning when in flower but really hard to come by, so we are pleased to have enough numbers of these to release this year. If you are looking for something completely different for your garden, then this is the one. The New Pin Oak Green Pillar is also a tough candidate that is narrow and upright growing, boasts stunning autumn foliage and is ideal for driveways and avenues and doubles as a great substitute for ornamental pears that are saturating the municpal landscape. Other new introductions in narrow or fastigiate trees include two new varieties of flowering plums - Purple Jewel and Ruby Flare. Both have the stunning bronze-purple coloured leaves and masses of white flowers in spring. The new crab apple, Julia’s Blush, has an interesting coloured flesh that is white with a pink blush through it, as well as the lovely showy blossom in spring. Early Bird specials are again being offered for those who order their trees before June 10. This includes ornamental

pears in several varieties, London plane trees, golden and claret ash, mop top catalpa, Robinia and maple and lipstick maples for only $31.95. Plus our Orchard Starter fruit tree package is back with four assorted fruit trees for $89.95, making this a great price to start off an orchard of fruit for life. And what is better that picking your own , home grown fruit. The Mop Top silver birch - this dwarf form has tight branching, making it a wonderful specimen tree with a perfectly round head. It is ideal for small spaces and courtyards and is slow growing so does not require pruning. Mop top ornamental pear Chanticleer is new and exclusive to Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, as well as three new mop top crab apples. All great things come in small packages and the highlights of 2011 had to be the exclusive release of the first ever dwarf growing multi-grafted fruit trees. Popular in the larger growing forms as you get two or three moderate amounts of fruit from one tree, plus all the pollinators are taken care of, however now, they are available on a shorter growing overall tree, able to be netted or planted in a pot. Add to this, 2012’s offerings of four

new miniature peaches, where some are compact versions of old favourites like Golden Queen and O’Henry. For this season four new varieties of dwarf nectarine will be released, we are fairly heavily booked up with pre orders, so be quick if you would like to secure one. The white fleshed have been particularly popular as this is the first time they have ever been available. For those that missed out on our limited release last year of the three new dwarf apricots, order now as by the time this goes to print the first two semi loads of trees will have arrived for the season, and any unallocated stock will go out for general sale. Bear in mind that most varieties are SOLD OUT before they even arrive in the nursery. Unfortunately we only have a very few of the new dwarf blood plums and

dwarf Japanese plums left , but if you get in quickly we may be able to supply. That means just about every fruit tree is available in miniature and in today’s age of container gardening and smaller gardens these can be grown in pots on a balcony or patio or in the garden. We have also increased our range of espaliered fruit tree starters, already trained and ready to go. All the hard work with the initial training has been done, so you can plant with confidence, varieties include apples, peaches, nectarines and citrus trees. Limestone Coast Advanced Trees also has a huge range of bare root fruit trees at present. The size of our trees so far this year is tremendous with all the summer irrigation, most trees look as though they have been on “steroids”. All orders placed now will be charged at last year’s pricing plus we will upgrade your tree to the next size free. There are limited stocks as listed in our advert. However if you miss this an additional bonus this winter Limestone Coast Advanced Trees at Gardenarium will have minimum 20% off fruit trees and ornamentals this season, so rush in to get your bargains. And we are so pleased with the massive size of our weeping flowering cherries that we have axed the price to less than the price from 10 years ago. Specials run until 4pm Monday, June 10. Most of our customer pre-orders have been picked and the remainder are in the sales area. If you require any varieties that you do not see please ask, also if you require costings on bulk planting quantities please enquire. We will have more trees to dig from our growing areas throughout the season. Calum Haygarth

Offering a variety of giftware, clothing and home decor, Deb has a desire to stock new and interesting products. This is reflected in the ever changing window displays. “Store 21 is always evolving, if we stumble across something we love, we will endeavour to get it into our store,” Deb said. She works with horses with difficulties shoeing, trouble changing leads, that resist turning their neck, that suffer pig roots, bites or have body tenderness. “I have the rare knowledge of working with muscles and releasing trauma in the cranial and sacral areas of a horse, empowering them,” Lorraine said. “The relief I give horses and the recognition and acceptance from their owners when they realise what had caused the problem is what I absolutely love about my job.” Lorraine is all about treating horses as athletes and that’s how she tries to get their owners to see them as well. “They (horses) are athletes with muscles, ligaments and tendons which can need treatment to keep them in good form,” she said. “So whether you ride for competition or pleasure, empower your horse for excellent performance. “The horse has a wonderful self-healing ability that works well with my therapy and I am rewarded to know my knowledge is assisting the well being of the horse.” PO Box 1358 Naracoorte Phone: (08) 8762 3269 or 0408 026 933

Pisces This week is a good time to honestly assess your strengths and weaknesses rather than relying on a couple of close family members who treat you as if you’re perfect - no one is. Embrace your strengths and start planning on how to develop your weaknesses. Aries Don’t dwell on a past failure and allow it to keep you from taking a risk and trying something new. You’ve changed, circumstances have changed and it is time to dip your toe in the water again by trying something new or developing your skills with some extra training. Taurus It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee when it comes to giving an unreliable friend the benefit of the doubt. You coming to their rescue all the time in reality is not helping. You’ve gone above and beyond for this person but they need to start taking some responsibility. Gemini It might be time to be less of a free spirit and develop your responsible side. If you want to get ahead professionally, you need to start appearing more serious and to get things done to the standard expected and on time. Cancer An awkward situation could arise this week at work as a senior colleague exaggerates their knowledge and ability in an area that could impact on you. Tread carefully but don’t take the fall if things look like going pearshaped. Leo Could be a murky week on the finance front but before you accuse others of not playing fair make sure you’ve really looked into it. Enlist an expert to sort things out.

Virgo They say love is blind and when it comes to a partner, trusted friend or respected colleague, you most certainly are. No one is perfect and you need to be aware of the flaws. Keep some perspective. Libra You are not 100 percent focussed on work this week as a new romantic interest keeps taking up most of your time and thoughts. Given how distracted you are I would get a colleague to check over any work you submit - your attention to detail might not be what it should be this week. Scorpio You might be feeling slightly unappreciated at the moment but instead of focussing on that and sulking, move onto a new, challenging project involving one of your creative passions. Sagittarius Spending a lot of time of late helping others solve their problems is starting to take its toll. You have no energy and have lost interest in socialising. Take this time to recharge the batteries and try and look for a more balanced approach in future. Capricorn You are starting to feel hopeless about getting ahead at work because you lack the education and training of others but it is never too late. Bite the bullet, find a good teacher/mentor and start developing the skills needed. Aquarius Money is looming its head as an issue in a relationship but don’t let fear give way to honesty. This person should love you for who you are not what you have and as tough as it is if your financial situation is a deal breaker then move on.

LOCAL Working They say you can’t teach old dogs new tricks, but Rex Hocking has other ideas. While Rex agrees that it’s best to start training working dogs when they are young – preferably around three months – he says it is possible to bring new skills and disciplines to older dogs. Rex, from The Washpool Working Kelpies in Avenue Range South Australia, will be conducting the working dog school during the Clark Rubber Australian Working Dog Muster at Casterton. “With different techniques you can bring any dog around,” Rex said. “Discipline is the key - you need to get into their mind and work on their natural instinct to bring sheep to you, but you don’t use too much pressure and

dog school part of kelpie muster force. “It is best to start training them at a young age, usually about three months, but the school caters for all ages of dogs and handlers.” The training school starts with basic handling skills such as how to teach them to sit, come when called, correctly tie up a dog, how to go through gates, introducing them to sheep and the correct place to stand. “It’s about learning to use the natural working ability of the dog and getting the most out of their abilities,” Rex said. More advanced dogs will be taught barking and backing techniques and Rex can also determine if they prefer right or left side work. “Like humans are right or left handed, dogs

have a preferred working side too,” Rex said. “They will naturally go to the left or the right.” He will also “know within five minutes” whether the dog is suited to yard work or paddock work. “It’s hard to get a dog good in both sectors and it’s usually in their breeding which one they will be good at,” Rex said. The school can also re-educate most wayward dogs. “If an older dog gets in to trouble and starts to do it his way, there are ways to bring them back to the basics,” Rex said. The school is open to any working dog, including kelpies, border collies and cross breeds. Rex, a breeder as well as a trainer, said the quality of working dogs had improved a lot in recent years. “I’d say

95 per cent of the dogs coming to the school are well bred,” he said. The Muster will be held on June 8 and 9 at

Casterton and the working dog school will be on June 10. Contact Rodney James (03)5579 1374 to book a place in the school.

ADVERTORIAL I PEOPLE’S CHOICE CREDIT UNION As part of a deliberate strategy to stay in touch with its key communities, People’s Choice Credit Union has held its April

Board Meeting in Mount Gambier. People’s Choice is Australia’s second largest credit union with $8 billion under management

People’s Choice board meeting in Mount Gambier

and advice, approximately 350,000 members and branches across the country. “As a credit union we exist to serve our

members,” said Chair Bill Cossey AM. “Therefore, we believe it’s very important that as a Board we keep in close touch with what is happening with our members and their communities. Holding our Board Meetings in vital regions such as the South East is one way we can do that. “While we’re here we’re talking to a wide range of people – our staff of course, community leaders, business people and members – to find how we can improve, how we can help, how we can work together for a better future.” People’s Choice has been operating in the South East for 40 years, through branches in Millicent, Naracoorte and, for the past 33 years, Mount Gambier. This commitment to the region

is only growing. $2 million investment Every year, People’s Choice injects some $2 million into the local economy through wages, rent, accommodation and travel – and that’s about to jump significantly. People’s Choice plans to spend close to an additional $2 million to completely

refurbish its Mount Gambier and Naracoorte branches. Over the coming months the branches will be transformed to a state-of-the-art standard, with members able to enjoy features such as free use of new coffee machines, a dedicated children’s play area with iPads, free newspapers to read, private and casual meeting areas, and even a concierge.“Of course we’re also going to have a full range of financial services, including access to financial planners and home loan specialists,” said managing director Peter Evers. “This level of investment demonstrates we’re absolutely committed to the people of the South East, and why wouldn’t we be?

“While our home lending in this region has eased recently, reflecting statewide conditions, all our other indicators – personal loans, deposits, insurance – show the South East is strong and getting on with business. “Some people tend to think the South East is only forestry, but everyday we’re helping people in viticulture, a wide range of agricultural businesses, the fishery industry – there’s a lot going on.” Supporting the South East People’s Choice has long been a supporter of the South East community. At the moment, 32 not-forprofit groups from across the South East – including sporting clubs, community groups, charities and schools – are taking part in the People’s Choice Community Lottery and are on track to raise $40,000 for their organisations. The local branches also provide direct support for many local groups, including Give Me Five For Kids, a children’s charity that the Mount Gambier branch has supported for many years. The People’s Choice branches in Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Millicent are some of the credit union’s busiest sites across Australia. “With a credit union, our members are our owners not just customers, as they would be with a bank,” Mr Evers said. “People here have long seen the sense in that, so we’re proud to do what we can to support the South East – because the South East has always supported us.” People’s Choice Credit Union is Australia’s second largest credit union with more than 350,000 members across Australia, and branches in South Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Western Australia.
