and improved pharmacy unveiled

On May 25, Mount Gambier’s U.F.S. Chemist will officially unveil its new premises. Seven months after renovations began, the not-for-profit pharmacy, which is run by a board of community minded residents, not only has more room, but more services, more products and even

bigger plans for the future. In an environment where the government is now encouraging preventative medicine programs and promoting great awareness of monitoring our own health, pharmacies and their staff are providing more health checks, including diabetes and blood pressure, than

ever before. “It really is about making sure our customers can look after themselves and manage their own health and medications,” U.F.S. Chemist manager and pharmacist Barbara Beal said. “We have expanded to make sure we can offer all those services - if there’s a family history

of certain health issues, we encourage people to start coming in for checks of their risk factors from the age of 30 0r 40.” An increased demand on Webster packs was another factor in deciding to expand and revamp the store. “Webster packs, which are basically a medication management

system, is a burgeoning industry as well,” Barbara said. The rear ramp access will also make life easier for U.F.S. customers, espcially those with walking aids or prams. A new beauty room, which is close to completion, is also part of the new look U.F.S. Chemist, with beauty

specialist Bec Coutts, happy to offer advice with the store’s expanded beauty products as well as letting customers know just what will be on offer soon, including massage and facials. In keeping with the community focus of U.F.S. Chemist, the store makeover used almost entirely local contractors. Only some of the specialist pharmacy equipment came from suppliers outside the region. “We want to encourage people to shop locally and for us that means supporting other local businesses ourselves,” Barbara said. “The store expansion and upgrade is also a reflection of the board’s confidence in the economic future of this region - despite the bad news that has been around, they never hesitated in making this investment in the community.” While the U.F.S. Chemist has been a fixture

on the Mount Gambier retail landscape for 97 years, many people aren’t aware just how much the not-for-profit pharmacy gives back to the local community. U.F.S. hands out annual scholarships to the four Mount Gambier based secondary schools, as well as providing sponosrship for a number of local sporting clubs and community organisations. It is also a supporter of the Mount Gambier Library, Regional Foodbank, the Mount Gambier Private Hospital and the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. “The U.F.S. Chemist basically invests all its profits back into the business or the community,” Barbara said. “The board don’t make a song and dance about it but they are always giving back to the community wherever they can.” The U.F.S. Chemist offers membership, which entitles you to special in store deals, as well as doubling as a National Pharmacies membership, which gives you discount in not just the Mount Gambier store but National Pharmacies outlets in South Australia and Victoria, as well as expanding into Queensland and Western Australia.

LOCAL Tireless

Not even a battle with cancer has dampened the volunteering spirit of Hazel Short. Portland District Health nominated Hazel for a Minister for Health Volunteer Award in recognition of her long-term commitment. And while Hazel didn’t take out an award, which were announced in Melbourne last Wednesday, she is still a remarkable story that puts most of us to shame. PDH thanked all its hard working voluneteers

volunteer recognised

with a morning tea last Friday. Last year Hazel (pictured above in her Telecare role) was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since undergone a double mastectomy. However, instead of seeing this as a barrier to her volunteering, it spurs her on to do even more in the community. Hazel started as a volunteer at PDH 25 years ago, and continues to volunteer with the Telecare program which makes calls each day to

Home and Community Care clients living at home. Along with her Telecare role, Hazel also volunteers each week at Harbourside Lodge, where she attends weekly to play cards and assist with outings or events the facility has organised. She has volunteered over the years in other areas of PDH, assisting with Meals on Wheels, reading and providing a listening ear to patients and as a ward assistant. The latest initiative to benefit

LOCAL Volunteers

Portland District Health from Hazel’s tireless volunteer hours is the Transit Lounge, where people are supported while being discharged from the hospital. In the broader community, Hazel formed a widow’s group after her husband passed away nine years ago, is a tram conductor for Portland Cable Trams and is a volunteer with, Portland United Church, Glenelg Shire Council’s Kurrujong Planned Activity Group and as a bingo caller

for Portland Senior citizens. Hazel had cared for her husband for 16 months after he suffered a stroke which left him in a wheelchair and needing full-time care. PDH’s Manager of Volunteers Carolyn Malseed described the value of Hazel’s tireless volunteering as immeasurable. “Her contribution enables the organisation to provide programs to the community of a high standard. Hazel’s enthusiasm and empathy in all she undertakes inspires others along the journey with her,” Ms Malseed said. “The Portland Community is enriched by Hazel being a part of it.” Manager Primary & Community Care Annette Hinchcliffe said Hazel’s contribution was worthy of special recognition. “Whilst Hazel is a humble lady who considers herself to be just “one of the team”, her ongoing work as a volunteer is certainly worthy of special recognition,” she said.

needed for breast cancer fundraiser

Organisers of the long running Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon are seeking assistance from interested community members, as the event heads into its 14th year. The luncheon has been held at Commodore on the Park on each National Pink Ribbon Day since 2000 and is a favourite charity event among women across the South East. October 28 is official Pink Ribbon Day. Last year’s event featured guest speaker Peter Goers and the launch of the committee’s newest fundraising intiative the Helping Hand Fundraising Calendar and Helping Hand Bags. Organising committee member Lucy Spencer said countless

volunteer hours went into making sure the luncheon ran smoothly and was financially successful. “It might be a one-day event, but the real work is done in the months beforehand to make sure we have a great guest speaker, food, wine, prizes and entertainment, and can put on an enjoyable day for our guests and make the most money possible for breast cancer,” she said. “The support of local business has always been incredible and has helped us raise a lot of money over the years. “Now we just need the support of a few more dedicated volunteers to help lighten the load and make sure this success continues well into the future.” More than $165,000 has been raised during the luncheon’s history, for cancer treatment and detection equipment, to increase awareness and for research and upgrades of cancer facilities within the Millicent Chemotherapy Room, Mount Gambier Hospital, Mount Gambier Women’s Health Program, Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group, Greenhill Lodge, Hanson Institute, Flinders Medical Clinic and Cancer Council SA and more. Proceeds from the 2012 luncheon and fundraising calendar sales are being used to the fund the new Helping Hand Bags, which are filled with grocery, pharmaceutical and fuel vouchers from South East businesses and distributed anonymously to women in need by local health care professionals. To register your interest, find out more about becoming a Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group member or volunteer your time, please call Ms Spencer on 0409 203 037.

“Brett (Maher) is one of those rare breeds that when you think about him you can’t find any dirt on him at all - he’s just squeaky clean.” That was how Pioneers coach Richard Hill introduced the Australian basketball icon when he was the guest speaker at the inaugural Captain’s Breakfast last Friday morning. Hill had the privilege of being part of the coaching team at the Adelaide 36ers at the tail end of Maher’s illustrious career and his insights into the NBL, the 36ers and even the Pioneers, as well as his anecdotes from an 18 year NBL career that also yielded three Olympic Games certainly kept the Commodore on the Park crowd captivated. Given his resume also includes three NBL titles, six MVP accolades at the 36ers and having the 36ers home court named in his honour, it is arguably his two Larry Sengstock medals that set him apart. The medal is awarded to

icon makes whirlwind visit to

the most valuable player in the NBL championship grand final series. Maher won his in the 1999 and 2002 championship victories for the Adelaide based franchise. “That is the true measure of a champion player, is being able to perform at his absolute best when the heat is really in the kitchen,” Hill said, as part of his introduction. In a twist of fate, Maher was more familiar with the SEABL and, in particular, the Pioneers 2013 season thanks to his preparations for what turned out to be an unsuccessful bid for the Adelaide 36ers coaching position. “I thought I had a pretty good run at it, I’d be a good link back to the public to get fans through the doors but the one thing I overlooked was my zero experience as a coach,” Maher joked.

Mount Gambier While disappointed, he certainly has plenty to keep him busy and in touch with the sport through his commentary role with Channel Ten’s coverage of the NBL and speaking engagements. “It’s pretty good to talk about a game you love and get paid for it, it doesn’t get much better than that - it’s the second best gig in basketball,” Maher said. Clinching the coaching role at the club he gave 18 years to and that he is so shattered to see in such a struggling position, as it has been for the past four or five seasons, would have been his first choice. A passionate follower of the NBA as well, Maher ranks Stephen Curry, from the Golden State Warriors, as the player young basketballers should be watching an emulating. “From his shooting technique right the way through to how he handles the ball,” Maher said. “He is someone kids should use as a model for their game.” Of course, Maher got to suit up against many of his basketball heroes when he twice took on the much vaunted US Dream Team during his Olympic campaigns. He admitted the first outing in 1996 was less than memorable but that the three consecutive threes when he hit the court in the second outing in 2004, where the Boomers actually led the NBA stars for three quarters, was a performance to cherish. “Their athleticism, skill and size took over and overran us in the end,” Maher said. Darnell Mee is the best guard Maher ever played with, while Robert Rose was memorable for his individual brilliance. “Whatever was needed to win a game, Darnell would pull it out and he was one of the best defensive players in the league,” Maher

said. “Sometime with Robert (Rose), we would all just give him the ball and stand back and see what he could do.” Mark Davis was the best big man Maher played with thanks to his workrate and incredible longevity for a 6”6 guy. And for a man who played alongside cult figures like Paul Rees and Rupert Sapwell, Maher laments the loss of genuine personalities from the NBL competition. “It’s very monotone,” he said. “There’s no one who gets the crowd involved.” Public appearances like last Friday’s breakfast

not only give Maher a chance to entertain and inspire but also promote the Hudson Maher Foundation - a charitable organisation set up by Maher and his wife Tanya after losing their 13 month old son Hudson to a rare bone marrow disease. The foundation has funded a transplant nurse, medical equipment and covers the costs for families forced to relocate for usually around six months if their child needs a bone marrow transplant. “We (the foundation) pays for all the costs - food, travel,” Maher said.

The Hudson Maher Foundation has assisted more than 30 families since its inception in 2004. “What we got out of it (Hudson’s battle) is that a lot of families go through what we went through and didn’t have the profile or support I had so we set up the foundation for families going through a similar thing,” Maher said. The foundation holds around three major fundraiser a year and for more information about how you can get involved log onto the website www.hudsonmaher.

and Child Bonanza Garage Sale comes of age

The popular Portland Australian Breastfeeding Association’s Baby and Child Bonanza Garage Sale will be held for the

21st time this Sunday at the Portland Civic Hall. The ABA garage sale has been a must for all parents, parents-to-be,

grandparents and carers for the past 21 years. It was the first of its kind and offers everything for babies and children, all

under one roof at drastically reduced prices. Event coordinator and breastfeeding community educator Lynda Cooper said it was the ultimate recycling event where people could pass on their pre-loved baby items and purchasers could buy quality goods at bargain prices. “For the first two years, the event was held at the South Portland Hall which we very quickly outgrew - since then the event has been held at the Civic Hall

- Walkers/Rollators - Homecare/Patient Aids - Bathroom/Toilet Equipment - Bariatric Equipment

with hundreds of people attending each year,” Ms Cooper said. “Even though internet shopping and eBay have become popular ways of buying and

selling in recent times, we find that people still enjoy coming to our sale where they can not only touch and try out the goods but also enjoy a great social event. “As you look around the hall you see lots of pregnant tummies, doting grandparents and very happy shoppers getting fantastic bargains. “The sale is so successful that in recent years we have asked parents to bring their babies in slings

and back packs rather than prams to lessen congestion in the hall.” Portland group leader, Angela McFeeters said profits from the Garage Sale enabled the Portland ABA group to do great work in the community assisting women to breastfeed. “Our group holds meetings for mums with practical parenting and breastfeeding topics, a weekly walk’ n talk group, Breastfeeding Education Classes, breast pump hire and ante-natal talks to name just a few,” she said. “Our qualified voluntary breastfeeding counsellors are also available to assist mothers with their breastfeeding either over the phone or in person and they will also be available at the Garage Sale.” The group has been fortunate to receive assistance from the Portland Apex and Lions Clubs who alternate each year to provide a delicious barbeque at the event. At the conclusion of the sale, volunteers from All Saint Outreach take away any unsold clothes and equipment. The event will be held at the Portland Civic Hall , Bentinck St Portland on Sunday, May 26 from 11am-1pm. Entry by gold coin donation. Photochromic lenses are clear (or nearly clear) indoors and darken automatically in response to sunlight outdoors. They also protect your eyes from 100 percent of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. These features make photochromic lenses a great convenience, because they reduce your need to wear prescription sunglasses in most outdoor conditions and are suited to just about everybody. Today’s photochromic lenses come in a wide variety of lens materials. So whether you prefer polycarbonate lenses, high-index lenses, or regular plastic or glass lenses, you typically will be able to purchase a photochromic version of your preferred lenses. The new Vantage lens becomes polarised as it darkens, so it’s

great for people who spend time fishing or boating. Photochromic lenses also are great for kids, who tend to spend more time outdoors than most adults. Experts say the risk for cataracts and other age-related eye problems is associated with a person’s lifetime exposure to the sun’s UV rays, so protecting your child’s eyes early on could pay dividends when he or she is a mature adult. Photochromic Sunglasses One limitation of photochromic lenses is that they don’t darken adequately inside a vehicle for driving in sunny conditions. This is because they require exposure to the sun’s invisible UV rays to activate the darkening process, and most car and truck windshields block UV radiation. To overcome this problem, some lens

manufacturers have introduced “sun” photochromic lenses that are designed primarily for outdoor wear and daylight driving. These lenses have a mild tint for driving and darken further when directly exposed to sunlight. Drivewear lenses are photochromic polarized sunglasses, the lenses are capable of sensing and reacting to varying light conditions both outdoors and behind the windshield of a car or truck. With their combination of photochromic and polarization technologies, Drivewear lenses reduce glare and maximize visual acuity in bright light conditions.

local story Students embrace conservation project Students from Gordon Education Centre began constructing nest boxes last Friday as part of their involvement in the redevelopment of the Valley Lake Conservation Park. The students will participate in a nine week program to transform the Valley Lake Conservation Park; with a number of activities including the construction of nest boxes, habitat creation, pathway redevelopment and more involved in the program. A number of works in Stage 1 of the redevelopment have been completed at Yarra Pygmy Perch Pond; including all earthworks, as well as the addition of liner, clay and mulching. The water level has recently been stabilised to a selfsustaining level. Stage 2 of the redevelopment is scheduled to commence on July 27 and 28, and includes the revegetation of riparian and fringing zones. The community will be called upon to assist in planting some 2500 pants. Five long-nosed Potoroos and five Cape Barren Geese from Cleland Wildlife Park are new additions, with opportunities to acquire more animals including Tasmanian Bettongs and Magpie Geese currently being explored. The area near the new pathway close to Valley Lake’s edge is currently being prepared for mulching and possible plantings in July this year. New information signage has also recently been developed for the conservation park; with the development of a new look entrance to the Park also scheduled to commence.

Pisces Beware a friend or family member bearing gifts this week as it could prove to be a Trojan horse and an attempt to guilt you into doing something you don’t want to do. Use your talents to help others - you probably have to accept they won’t be money spinners. Aries Stop worrying that a past love could affect a new relationship that is starting to blossom. You will be in demand from all quarters this week and might have to resort to turning off your phone and taking some time out just for you. Taurus In your busy life it is time to be a bit picky about what you say yes to, especially socially. Reserve your precious free time for close friends and family and make sure you spend it with people who make you feel good not bad about yourself. Gemini Dilemmas about your career path continue to plague you. Try and stop worrying about it. Make a decision and try something new and if it doesn’t work out you’ll just find another option. Cancer The frustration of not being understood is weighing on you but stop being so defensive and just firmly stand your ground and stick to the courage of your convictions. Try and avoid typically argumentative people. Leo The bad news this week is you might need to enlist some professional legal help with a messy inheritance, settlement or other financial transaction that seems to be anything but simple thanks to meddling, malicious parties. An invitation for a holiday is timely - take it and relax.

LOCAL Capturing Virgo Stop relying on those closest to you and trust that you are strong enough and smart enough to stand on your own two feet. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t accept some pampering or offers of R & R. Libra You are struggling with the run of the mill duties at work because you need to find some challenges for your creativity. The bottom line is you need to get the everyday tasks done and done well and then something more up your alley might open up. Scorpio You might be in for a romantic disappointment so brace yourself. But all is not lost, it might just open up the doors of communication and you can let your partner know what it is you’re looking for. Sagittarius You might be unsure as to how to deal with an issue at home but you cannot keep ignoring it - bite the bullet and address it now. A family member is impacting on your professional life and it might be time to call in the troops for some more help. Capricorn

It’s a week of mixed signals from a close friend or a neighbour and your frustration is evident. While they seem to be avoiding an honest approach, perhaps you could try and bring things to a head and demand the truth. You are aware it could hurt but it will be so much easier to move on if you know what’s really going on. Perhaps in reality you already know what’s going on.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY I travelled in America a couple of years ago and had an unusual experience. It has left me with unanswered

New York New York by Robbie Tansel

questions ever since. I’ve tossed it round in my head and it still leaves me with unanswered questions.

I thought that maybe my loyal readers in Mount Gambier may be able to explain it to me.

rs e t s Fo

I hasten to add that this story is completely true. I hasten to add that this is the first time I’ve used the word hasten. I was staying in a hotel only a couple of hundred metres away from Times Square in New York City. Anyone who has ever been to Times Square will tell you it is an extremely busy location. As I left my hotel for a day of sightseeing I was intercepted by a friendly looking lady. She was smartly dressed, like some sort of a professional woman and seemed pleasant. I think you can normally work a person out in the first

seven seconds you meet them and you can judge a book by its cover. “Could you do me a favour?” she asked me. My “I’m about to be scammed so be very careful” alarm was ringing immediately. I decided to hear her out though as I’m generally a pretty trusting person. If she started telling me a story about how I’d won a lottery and I just needed to provide my bank account details though I’d really need to think carefully. I will add here that the lady was black and the coffee shop/café was some sort of an Asian establishment. don’t know if that’s

important to the story. “The woman in the deli (which happened to be next door to my hotel) won’t sell me a hot chocolate,” she continued. “She says the machine is broken. I don’t think the machine is broken. I think she just doesn’t like me. If I give you some money can you go in and try to buy a hot chocolate to see if the machine really is broken?” The warning bells rang louder. Was this a scam? If it was, how was she going to scam me if she gave me money? Surely she was the only one who had the potential to lose money. Was I on some sort of hidden camera show? Why would the woman in the shop not like her? Was it really good hot chocolate? Having decided that I didn’t think I could be scammed I took the woman’s money and headed into the deli. I ordered the hot chocolate and sure enough in only a minute or so, a hot chocolate was

produced. The machine wasn’t broken. I collected the hot chocolate, took it outside, and gave it to the lady. “I knew it!” she exclaimed. With that she walked off. I was still wondering if I’d somehow been scammed? Was the scam that she had made me walk in and then deliver her the hot chocolate, saving her from having to walk ten metres and interact with human beings? Did the deli woman in fact have it in for her? If so, why? Did she come back later and have an angry confrontation? I’d never know. Just another regular day in New York, I guess. Anyway, if you have a theory I’d be interested to hear at robbietansel@

local story Free training for farmers Natural Resources South East are again inviting landholders to attend their popular and beneficial nrmFARM workshops throughout June. nrmFARM is a free online tool that offers farmers a simple way to record important farm information that is connected to a map of the landholders farm. The system allows a landholder to find their farm on a regional map and then create paddocks and map assets such as pipes, power lines, tanks, gates, pivots, stockyards and trees etc. Satellite imagery can be overlaid and information easily updated or changed such as highlighting paddocks that have been fertilized, sown with a crop or new fences added. Kybybolite farmer Phil Schinkel has used nrmFARM for a number of years and said “It’s handy to have a map of the farm and know what’s going on in the paddocks.” Natural Resources South East Enhancing Soil Health project officer Alison Boomsma said the program is simple to use yet very versatile and flexible. “Not only can you map and record farm assets, you can flag repair jobs such as holes in fences, record soil tests, record NLIS and other livestock information as well as spray and fertilizer records,” she said. SENRM Board presiding member Frank Brennan encouraged landholders to attend the workshops as keeping good “One of the great features about nrmFarm is that it is free yet has a lot of the functions found in expensive software,” he said. “Often there is a focus on improving farm practices but farm management is also vital and this program will assist landholders in this area.” Registration to the workshops is required as past workshops have booked out quickly. To register your interest in an nrmFARM workshop, contact Alison Boomsma on (08)8735 1213 or email Workshops are about three hours long with computers, training manuals and refreshments provided. The workshops are suitable for beginners or those needing refresher training. The workshops are being held on Millicent on June 17, Naracoorte on June 18, Bordertown on June 20 and Mount Gambier on June 23 and 24. - 027

Triple treat Good things often happen in threes and that has been the case at Portland District Health last week. Three babies were born in three days at the hospital, a record for recent years. The rush started last Monday with the birth of Ellie Michelle Rethus to Anna and Shane Rethus. On Tuesday, Lukas Christopher Malcolm Jones to Krystie Gaye Allen and Tim Jones was welcomed to the world, followed by Reubin Jay Martin–Lawrence to Catrina Johnston and her partner Cory on Wednesday. There has been an upswing in the number of low-risk local births at the hospital after the resumption of obstetric services last October with the appointment of obstetrician Dr Ghazala Irshad. The service has been further strengthened in recent months with the recruitment of anaesthetist Dr David Comyn along with a part-time anaesthetist. Midwifery team leader Colleen Hanmer said PDH has recorded 27 births this year and would come close to matching last financial year’s figure of 38. “There was a delay at the start of the year but it has been picking up in recent months,” she said. “Having three babies in three days is a good sign that our local community is gaining confidence in the service.” Ms Hanmer said PDH aimed to provide a full, safe, and effective service that meets the needs of the local community. “We aim to reconnect with the community and provide a full service that provides a local choice and satisfies the needs of local people.” PDH also offers a variety of childbirth education classes. - 028

Profits need you - losses manage themselves “Profits need you – losses manage themselves’ will be the focus of keynote speaker Pita Alexander at DairySA’s Tight Times, Tough People conference to be held on Thursday, June 6, in Mount Gambier. Registrations are now open for DairySA’s Conference 2013 and themes of resilience, boosting confidence and focusing on what dairy farmers can control within their businesses will be at the fore. Pita (pictured above) is an accountant from New Zealand, with more than 35 years’ experience servicing agricultural clients and presenting at rural conferences, who very much respects family farms, their managers and their owners. “I focus on my farming clients being soundly and sustainably profitable and I’m keen to inject back into agriculture by sharing some of what I’ve learnt

about profits and losses over my decades in the business,” said Pita. He is a self-confessed workaholic. “My work is enormously satisfying and I don’t want to play golf in case I like it,” he said. On a more serious note, Pita has been through many agricultural up and downturns with his clients and has a wealth of knowledge and business expertise to share at DairySA’s business resilience conference. Conference participants will also benefit from insights into coping with stress in business and personal life from Julian Kreig, who is community educator with Wheatbelt Men’s Health (Inc), in Western Australia. This organisation has

pioneered programs to address some of the problems facing rural communities (particularly men) in dealing with emotional turmoil and changing circumstances. Other topics will include Dairy Australia outlining what the future holds for the industry, hearing from a range of speakers to identify skills and ideas for bringing the farm business through these tough times, and there will be updates on several DairySA projects which have had some exciting results. The conference will be followed by the Dairy Young Guns dinner, hosted by the DairySA Young Dairy Network.

My Prostate And I (Goodbye Old Friend) “The last 12 months or so have been, to say the least, interesting and somewhat exciting for me. I have met and swapped stories with, many and various celebrities, politicians and other persons of consequence. I have also been interviewed by presenters on several radio shows, as well as journalists from prominent newspapers and magazines. And the opening question, asked by all of them was ‘so what made you write My Prostate and I ?’ And the universal response was… Because someone had to do it! Someone had to tell blokes like me what happens from start to finish on the prostate cancer roller coaster ride. Someone had to do that, in blokey language, that they will understand and appreciate. And so far, no one has done that… except me of course. They had

opened Pandora’s box and given me a license to fly. So I usually continued on… Did you know that around about as many men die of prostate cancer as do women of breast cancer? But everyone has heard of breast cancer and what happens and what to do.. blah blah, blah blah. And off I go, strutting up and down, flapping my gums and hopefully not putting them to sleep. I guess it works though, because everyone, and I repeat everyone, who has actually read my book from cover to cover, say they loved it, laughed, cried and became extremely enlightened...

And, my biggest fans are women, who, after having read it, say to their partners something like. “Harry, READ THIS NOW and then you are off for a prostate blood test (P.S.A.)... DON’T ARGUE! Perhaps it is in sheila’s language too, purely by accident, of course… Hmmm? In the words of The Hon Penny Wong Labor Senator for South Australia (in a letter from her) - ‘Your book is a welcome insight into the experiences of those affected by the illness.’” Graham Greenhow

The Pub in the Scrub turns 140 this year. Be part of the celebrations. Just an hour’s drive from Mount Gambier, the Menzies Hotel presents old world charm and hospitality as it has done since 1872. Eddie and his staff trade every day of the year in the bar, post office and convenience store. Friday and Saturday night the bistro is open with an extensive menu of large hearty meals, while on Sunday we turn back the hands of time to the traditional cooking of a magnificent wood fired pizza. Fired up all day from midday until 7pm, we cook your pizza in front of you - whether it is traditional toppings or your own invention from our extensive list of ingredients. Enjoy a wine or the beer, rum and cider we have on tap while you enjoy our pizzas.

Acky’s Takeaway is an easy choice for all your food needs. From 6am they will take care of your breakfast with an Egg & Bacon sandwich + a mug/medium coffee for only $7.95. They serve great Griffiths coffees and homemade cakes, take advantage of their reward/ loyalty program- buy 5 coffees get one free. The extensive lunch menu, including freshly made sandwiches, rolls, pies, pasties, fried food, hamburgers, steak sandwiches, yiros’, and the renown deluxe chicken burger, and much more all made to order also makes it the perfect place to go for lunch. If you’re short on time then take advantage of their wonderful take away service. Also a wide range of cold drinks & slushies to select. Eftpos & Phone credit available, newspapers & magazines as well.

With winter well and truly here why not try a delicious hot takeaway from The Allendale East General Store. Located in the heart of picturesque Allendale proprietors John and Sharon pride themselves on delivering top quality home cooked takeaway with a friendly smile. Old favorites such as fish and chips, hamburgers, steak sandwiches and hot chicken and gravy rolls are sure to satisfy. Their specialty dish the “Moka Dog” with bacon, capsicum and cheese comes highly recommended and definitely worth a drive according to John. For a healthier choice try a freshly made salad roll, sandwich or wrap. But I have to say their new cinnamon donut machine will be your favorite treat with a steaming hot coffee to go!

Food, Fun and Friendly that is what the Western Tavern offers. A family friendly environment with the best value meals in town. Dine in our very comfortable lounge or enjoy a great meal with your mates in the front bar, both offer the same great choice from our $9.90 meal menus including our ever popular schnitzels with a variety of toppings plus a choice of salad or vegetables. The Western Tavern also offers the same great meals and choices as a takeaway option plus a phone order convenience. The Western Tavern is open 7 days a week with meals available for lunch 12-2pm and tea 6pm-8pm. Make our Tav your Tav. Come and enjoy a great evening with friends

SEABL Pioneers

Western Border Soccer Association Premiership round five

outclass Gunners

The Mount Gambier Pioneers sit three wins clear at the top of the South Conference standings after a comprehensive 29 point win over Canberra on Saturday night. In a rare single game road trip, the Pioneers got off to a flier and led by 24 at the main change, extending that to as many as 35 points in the second half before settling for a 29 point victory. After a number of key players were slightly down in the home court loss to Geelong a week prior, the Pioneers were back to their devastating

best as they showcased their improved depth with seven players reaching double figures on the scoreboard. “We shot the ball exceptionally well,” coach Richard Hill said. “We went to Canberra for what we expected to be a pretty solid opposition so it’s hard to tell if we were that good or they were that bad.” The Pioneers dominated all the key statistics but again only broke even in the rebounding. “It is the only area of the game we were not superior in,” Hill said. “We definitely still have a lot of work in the interior and

the rebounding.” Because the Pioneers shot the ball so well, with Erik Burdon, four from seven, and Brad Hill, three from five, from three point territory, the deficiencies in the paint that were exposed against Geelong were not as evident. Tom Daly again was a standout, finishing with 18 points and six assists as he continues to show why he is a required player on the 36ers list. Perhaps he was further inspired by the Pioneers Captain’s Breakfast with one of his childhood heroes Brett Maher last

Friday morning. Burdon also had a huge game after a quiet performance against Geelong. He was impressive from the perimeter, finished with 20 points and also had seven assists. Ben Allen was another player who rebounded from a poor Geelong game to take 10 rebounds, all on the defensive boards, and finished with 13 points. Brad Hill has arguably been the Pioneers most consistent performer in 2013 and he was again a key, scoring 17 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. “The guys played very unselfishly,” coach Hill said. “But we have put ourselves in a good position and other results also went our way.” Second ranked Hobart lost at home to Bendigo, while third ranked Nunawading had an unexpected loss to lowly ranked Albury-Wodonga. Lake Y Swim Club celebrates 2012/13 successes

The Blue Lake Y Swim Club held its annual presentation night last month. The night was a celebration of the club’s successes in the 2012/13

season. The committee’s focus over the past swimming season has been on growing the club’s membership and continuing to develop the

supportive and inclusive culture within the club. It set a goal to expand its membership to open swimmers and is now running training sessions to cater to

adults looking at developing their fitness and skills in the pool. The club has seen a 40% increase in its swimming membership over the past swimming season. In the pool, the club was represented at 18 swim meets over the winter and summer swimming seasons, including the State Age Championships and Country Championships held in January this year. Swimmers have continued to develop their skills and that has been reflected in the large number of personal best times achieved by swimmers throughout the season. After a six week break swimmers are back in the pool training for the winter swimming season. Award recipients Highest Number of Personal Best Times (Girls): Emerson - 036

motor MOTOR

End of an era at Holden

Hamilton’s Home of Used Cars

After eight years and production numbers exceeding 520,000, the final VE Commodore has rolled off the line at Holden’s Elizabeth plant. The final example of the VE Commodore – recently named by Wheels Magazine as the “the best Australian car ever” - was an SS Z Series automatic sedan model, painted in ‘Chlorophyll’. Sold on six continents, the VE Commodore and its variants have cemented a place in Australia’s motoring hall of fame. As Holden looks forward to the imminent launch of the new VF Commodore, the VE stands tall as a landmark in Holden’s – and Australia’s – motoring history. Designed essentially from a blank piece of paper, the VE was the “most Australian Commodore” Holden had ever built when it launched in 2006.

The world’s motoring media duly recognised the VE’s winning combination of style, quality and worldclass driving dynamics as the VE claimed a swag of Australian and international accolades. The excellence of the VE and Holden’s engineering team was also well recognised within GM globally, with the VE’s vehicle architecture forming the basis of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro and much of the development work on the modern day American muscle car was done in Australia by Holden engineers. The VE Commodore also stands as the most successful race car model in Australian motorsport history. After winning on debut at the Clipsal 500 in 2007, the VE went on to win an unrivalled 103 championship series races, three V8

Supercar titles and remains the only model to have won at Bathurst four times in a row. “The VE Commodore was a landmark achievement for Holden,” said Holden executive director (manufacturing)Richard Phillips said. “The company’s first ‘cleansheet’ design allowed our team to show the world what Holden was capable of and the result was, and remains, a stunning car.” “It’s a bittersweet moment to be marking the end of VE production. “It’s been such a great product for us and there’s so much pride around the VE here in the plant, but at the same time we’re excited about the future and the entire Holden team is energised by the imminent launch of the fantastic new VF Commodore. “The VF is the most

advanced car ever created in this country, a car that takes the winning values and trademark driving dynamics of the VE and elevates it to a new level of luxury, technology and sophistication.” The Commodore is Holden’s longeststanding and most successful nameplate. First introduced in 1978, the Commodore name will have graced 15 model series when the VF Commodore goes on sale in June. Almost 3 million Commodores have been produced since 1978 when the first VB series sedans rolled off the Holden production line. Above - Chris Aistrope, Andrew Shaw and Scott Connolly from Holden Vehicle Operations mark the final VE Commodore to be built.
