the community

From little things, big things grow. It takes hard work, it requires strong community support but in the end, it becomes a win-win situation for everyone, and that’s the story of the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank branch. The initial steering committee and investors, who enabled the community bank branch to open its doors in November 2001 would be thrilled to see that over a decade down the track, the promised benefits to employees, shareholders and most importantly, the community, are flowing. The bank has handed out almost $332,000 in community grants, scholarships and sponsorships and is on the look out for more major projects to partner and support. From the Western Border Football League, to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, from the Regional Foodbank school breakfast club program to the Family Fun Day, the Mount Gambier & District Community Bank branch is an integral part of community projects across the district. Its latest partnership has been forged with Red Cross with the purchase of a community vehicle. The

$45,000, 11-seater car will be used for taking people to medical appointments or on outings. The vehicle purchase comes on the heels of a staff initiative, where the local branch staff volunteered at the local Red Cross in the Telecross program, calling to check on the elderly and infirmed who live alone. “The staff organised being part of the Telecross program on their own,” board chairman Herman Bersee said. “It was clearly a flow on of the community-mindedness the bank promotes.” The staff initiative earned the branch a National Red Cross Humanitarian Award. The concept of a community bank has been at times, hard to sell, but staff and the board believe people are now starting to understand the value of the bank to the community. Financially the arrangements are quite simple - the branch shares income on a fiftyfifty basis with Bendigo Bank and then when it comes to profits, up to 80 percent is filtered back into the community, with the shareholders never sharing more than a 20 percent share. The Mount Gambier branch has assisted more than 75 community groups and individuals since placing

The Mount Gambier & District Community Bank branch offers a full suite of banking services at competitive rates, as

well as insurance needs. And Mount Gambier will become the centre of the Bendigo Bank universe later this month when it hosts the 2013 SA/NT Community Bank State Conference. With the main corner as the backdrop for the event, which should

attract more than 70 bank representatives and their partners, the conference will be as much about showcasing this region as it is the vital bank business that will be on the agenda. The Mount Gambier hosted event is on May 29 and 30.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY I don’t want anyone to think I’ve lost my edge and that I’m going to be talking about kids every week, but we’ve had

Conversations with a one year old by Robbie Tansel

quite a breakthrough at the castle so I think it’s worth sharing with you all. Shaquille and I have reached a point

where we understand each other. As he’s only one he obviously hasn’t mastered English yet, but I have become

a baby whisperer and can now understand everything he says. I have faithfully recorded one recent conversation below for all of you out there who have always wondered what goes through a one year old’s mind. As you can see, he’s quite an eloquent little fella. Here goes. SHAQ : First up, Dad, I’d like to say thanks for the name. I know Mum wanted something safe like James or William, but I admired the way you stuck to your guns. ME : Thanks, Shaq. I know you’re probably going to look more like Ronald McDonald than an American basketball

player one day, which I think is all the more reason to have a really cool name. ST : Dad, do I have to keep eating food that’s all pureed? Surely I could have a go at a pizza or something? There’s no age recommendation on the box is there? RT : You mean have some of my pizza? I love you, but it’s my pizza. ST : Can I just interrupt you there, Dad. It’s a family pizza. You’ve got a family now so it’s about time you starting sharing your pizza with your family. Mum’s losing her baby body.

You’ve got a body that suggests you ate a baby. RT : Fair call, Shaq-Fu. Now what else can I do for you? ST : I’d really appreciate it if you’d respect my privacy a bit more. How many times a day do you really need to take my nappy off? And if you’re not looking at my butt you’re smelling it! What’s that all about? Does Mum know about this fetish? RT : Listen up, sunshine. I can’t say I’m all that fussed on that situation either. I try to make out I didn’t notice your smell

at least five times a day so your Mum will deal with it. How about you learn to use the toilet? ST : From what Mum says, you’re not so skilled at that yourself, big shot! How about when you’ve mastered it, I’ll give it a shot. RT : You’re a pretty cheeky little bloke, aren’t you? ST : Well, Dad, you’re the one who compared me to a terrorist. RT : Sorry about that… ST : And just to be clear I’m nothing like a terrorist. A terrorist appears in people’s lives, does their damage and then they’re gone. I’m more like a crazed dictator. I’ve got plans to disrupt every aspect of your life for the next 20 years. RT : Come on, let’s just settle things down a little. We’ve got the rest of our lives to argue. ST : OK, Dad. I just think it’s pretty important that I make it clear to the whole house that I’m the one running the show so we all know where we stand. So is there anything you’d like to know while we’re having this chat? RT : Well, now that you ask: what’s the deal with waking up in the middle of the night screaming your lungs out? ST : Sometimes I dream that I’m Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s kid. Absolutely scares the crap out of me. RT : That makes perfect sense. Anyway, I’m glad we had this chat. Would it be all right if I suggested in my weekly article that people who wanted to find out what their one year old was thinking could e-mail me at robbietansel@gmail .com and I’d ask you? ST : I don’t have much on the go at the moment, Dad, so that’ll be fine.

Headlight aim was once again the biggest issue in most locations with more than 60 percent of the vehicles requiring an adjustment. Organisers said the support of local councils, road safety groups and media was critical in continuing

to make the annual checks a success. Almost 200 car owners took advantage of the Mount Gambier checks with headlight aim (118)

Emerging Adelaide artist showcasing her talent at local arts festival ADVERTORIAL I PENLEY ESTATE Emerging Adelaide artist Ashleigh Abbott is joining the 2013 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival during May 23-26. Following on from her incredibly successful launch The Story, Love Birds Part 001 at Magazine Gallery late last year, her stunning geometric bird formations, are flocking to Coonawarra’s Penley Estate along with new designs. The exhibition engages emotion, imagination and new possibilities represented in Ashleigh’s world. Featuring a rainbow of

crisp, vibrant and strikingly modern design, she is quickly building a reputation as one of South Australia’s most exciting artists. “I’m incredibly honoured to be a part of this festival, and to be presenting my work to a new audience,” Ashleigh said. “My designs really come from the heart, and explore things that I have cherished about love and friendship in the past and what I dream love to be in the future. “A visual exploration of both the spark, excitement and promise

of new relationships, the strength and compassion of relationships of the present and the fond memory of past love,” This award winning series, which was initially commissioned by Windmill Theatre, led her to win a prestigious Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) Award for Windmill’s 2012 season collateral. It was so well received a commuter contacted Windmill to purchase their season poster straight out of a bus shelter. Since this exhilarating win, Ashleigh has gone on to exhibit widely

during the Adelaide Fringe, SALA and was featured on Seven Network’s Sunrise, where she was commissioned to paint one of the rooms in North Adelaide’s Minima Hotel. She hopes to expand her style in a range of other forms, including street art, murals and textile design. “I’m so inspired by colours and I feel like sometimes I am looking at the world through a kaleidoscope, and reassembling the pieces into creations,” Ashleigh said. “My recent trip to India has already given me ideas

for my next collection.” The official opening of Ashleigh’s exhibition is on May 25, from 1pm at Penley Estate. Prints and stationery will be available for sale. The exhibition is showing daily from 10am to 4pm from May 25 to June 25 at Penley Estate, McLeans Road, Coonawarra, South Australia.

at next week’s Gold Cup. As well as giving $5 from every ticket sold, Koonara Wines is also holding a charity auction, with the above items and a whole lot more as an added fundraiser for the Stand Like Stone Foundation. Like a getaway scene in a Hollywood movie the auction prize of a thrilling ride in Peter Gazzard’s racing car is up for grabs – Carlin and Gazzard are also donating the use of a new Mercedes for the weekend. “We are big supporters of Stand Like Stone, my wife Carolyn was one of the stars at the ‘Swinging with the Stars’ ball event so it is great to be able to help support Koonara with raising money for this good cause,” said Peter Gazzard. The Koonara Wines marquee will present a snapshot of dancing showcased by Swinging with the Stars dancers, trained by local dance icon Kate English of Envy Dance Studio. The auction will also include wine, a winter getaway in a secluded Coonawarra boutique cottage, jewellery, race packages and much more. Keep an eye out for the Koonara Mercedes around town next week while for tickets to the Koonara Wines Marquee at the Gold Cup call (08)8737 3222. WINTER WARMERS tempt the tastebuds Ginger & honey chicken 1kg small chicken thigh fillets, quartered 60ml (1/4 cup) tamari (wheat-free soy sauce) 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tbs grated fresh ginger 2 tsp honey 1 brown onion, halved, thinly sliced 3 shallots, trimmed, thinly sliced diagonally 2 tbs sesame seeds, toasted

Apple crumble cake 220g butter, chopped, melted 4 eggs, at room temperature 2 3/4 cups self-raising flour 1 1/2 cups caster sugar 1 cup sour cream 1/3 cup Foster Clark’s custard powder 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 800g can apple pie fruit Double thick cream, to serve Crumble topping 3/4 cup plain flour 1/3 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 75g butter, chilled, chopped

Place the chicken in a sealable plastic bag. Add tamari, garlic, ginger and honey. Rub to coat. Place in fridge for 4 hours to marinate. Preheat a barbecue flat plate on medium-high. Drain the chicken from the marinade. Cook the chicken for 3 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. Transfer to a serving plate and set aside for 5 minutes to rest. While the chicken is resting, cook onion on the barbecue, turning, for 1 minute. Add the onion to the chicken and toss to combine. Top with shallot and sesame seeds.

Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a 5cm-deep, 20cm x 30cm (base) roasting dish or slab pan. Line base and sides with baking paper, allowing a 2cm overhang at both long ends. Using an electric mixer, beat melted butter, eggs, flour, caster sugar, sour cream, custard powder and vanilla essence for 3 minutes or until pale and fluffy. Pour half the mixture into prepared dish or pan. Spread apple over mixture. Top with remaining mixture. Make crumble topping: Combine flour, white sugar, baking powder and cinnamon in a bowl. Using your fingertips, rub butter into flour mixture until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Sprinkle topping over cake mixture. award goes ahead for a second year

The Queens’ Birthday weekend will once again see Casterton’s Artists of the Valley Inc. host its annual exhibition of works entered into the Clarice Beckett Art Award. In honour of the locallyborn painter, the award was launched last year, drawing more than 90 entries from Melbourne, the South West district of Victoria, and South Australia. On judging last year’s award, well-known artist Charlotte Davis, said the wide range of styles and subject matter held appeal for everyone in a very well displayed exhibition. Last year’s winner,

Susan Sambell, of Warrnambool, was thrilled to win the inaugural award for her watercolour ‘A Basket of Apples’ which stood out in composition, use of colour and mastery of technique. An open theme gives plenty of scope for artists working in twodimensional mediums, and it is anticipated this year’s award and exhibition will attract even more quality entries, offering locals and visitors to the town an enjoyable experience during Casterton’s annual Kelpie Muster. Glenelg Mayor Karen Stephens will officially open the

exhibition on Friday, June 7, followed by the announcement and presentation of this year’s Clarice Beckett Art Award winner. Attendees will then have the opportunity to view the artwork over wine and nibbles. The exhibition will be open for viewing on both Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9. Clarice Beckett, who studied under Frederick McCubbin and Max Meldrum, in the early 1900s, was little known as an artist until after her death. By launching the award, Artists of the Valley Inc. is pleased to honour her memory and her

work, at the same time offering artists a forum for exhibiting their work, and a chance of acknowledgement, while living. Anyone wanting more information about the Clarice Beckett Art Award or the exhibition may contact Jenn White on (03)5581 1809 or Beth Dwyer on (03)5581 2366. Below (far left) - Artists of the Valley Inc. president Glad Laslett presents the inaugural Clarice Beckett Art Award to Susan Sambell, of Warrnambool.

don’t miss out May 23 Ali McGregor’s Alchemy PORTLAND ARTS CENTRE, PORTLAND Ali McGregor traverses the worlds of opera, cabaret and popular culture like no other, either as a soprano with Opera Australia, as one of the original stars of The Spiegeltent’s hit show La Clique or as a regular guest on ABC’s Spicks & Specks. Straight from a hit season at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ali’s new show Alchemy draws on all her influences for inspiration – from opera to the trashy hits of the 80s and 90s. Working with the finest jazz musicians she creates unique hybrids from popular songs, standards and blues, jazz and Latin flavours.

In a fortnight’s time Alistair Coonan will clock up a decade with McDonald’s Mount Gambier. What started as a good way to make money as a 14 year old, has now grown into a career that has provided him with the foundation skills needed for management across any number of career fields. And this week he was announced as one of seven restaurant managers Australia-wide to be recognised with a Ray Croc Award - named after the founder of the international franchise success story. It places Alistair (pictured) in the top one percent of McDonald’s Australian restaurant managers, which in a business the size of McDonald’s is no mean feat. “The award is presented to the best of the best, those whom obtain superior results,” Mount Gambier store owner Bernie Knight said. “In achieving operational excellence

delivering superior customer service, along with reinforcing our commitment to people, Alistair has excelled and deserves the award.” Alistair says it’s hard to believe the accolade when he considers he initially started with McDonald’s because his brother worked there and he wanted to earn money for all the usual teenage things like a phone and a car. “Then when I was about to finish

high school I realised I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and I was really enjoying earning good money so I actually quit school and increased my hours at McDonald’s,” Alistair said. While he admits he wishes he finished school and encourages his current staff to do just that, he doesn’t believe he has missed out on any opportunities because of the decision. “I

realise now that the things I wanted to do could have happened just six months down the track,” he said. “But it hasn’t hindered any of my training and study opportunities through McDonald’s and that will set me up for life.” Alistair has completed four managerial courses through McDonald’s and has completed a Diploma in Retail Management. He admits he still has mates

Installation, Maintenance, Service and Repair that give him a hard time about working at McDonald’s. “They joke around and ask when I’m going to get a real job,” Alistair said. “But for my age I have a huge amount of responsibility and have had a lot of training opportunities and even overseas travel as well as earning good money.” Alistair, who was promoted to restaurant manager as a 21 year old, is responsible for 130 staff and, in turn, the customer service, product quality and everything associated with running a successful store. “I certainly have plenty of challenges but there

McDonald’s Honour Roll One in every eight Americans have worked for McDonald’s so not surprisingly many celebrities have had a stint under the Golden Arches. Sharon Stone; Shania Twain; Jay Leno; Rachel McAdams & Pink

are also plenty of rewards,” Alistair said. One of those rewards is a trip to Thailand in June to receive his award at an international awards presentation. He then heads onto San Francisco for what is a biennial conference that is part rest and recreation and part professional development for the more than 800 managers from across Australia. Alistair loves the checks and balances that are part of McDonald’s training. “It allows you to improve things really quickly because issues are identified so quickly and it also lets you see how you are performing at all times,” he said. “The staff gets a kick out of seeing that we’re number one in Australia during a certain hour of service - it is immediate reward for effort.” Over the past two years, the drive-thru speed of service has been a big improver at the Mount Gambier store and it is often ranked number one in the nation, especially during breakfast trade. And thanks to Alistair talking owner Bernie Knight into a $60,000

The connection was further strengthened when in November last year, some of the children travelled to perform in Melbourne at the 10th Anniversary of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development. The relationship that has developed between Deborah Cheetham, the local indigenous community and the Glenelg Shire Council has been hailed a great success, with parents

celebrates strong season

The Mount Gambier Swim Club recently held its club presentation night. It was a chance for many of the swimmers to have fun and be rewarded for their hard work throughout the year. The club had great success throughout the 2012/13 season with swimmers medalling at SAPSASA, State Country and State level. Two swimmers, Ebony Prelc and James Gazzard, were selected in the SAPSASA State team which competed at the Sydney Aquatic Centre. Ebony also qualified for five events at the National Age Championships last month. She is currently the fifth fastest swimmer in Australia for the 50m and 100m MC breaststroke events. Ebony also provided other highlights for the club, winning eight medals at the State Champion ships and nine medals at the SA Country Championships. Emily Gazzard had a strong season and overcame on old rival swimmer from Broken Hill to claim three gold medals at the SA Country Championships, with Sarah Opie breaking through for her first SA Country medal at the same event. For Archie and Henry Muller, the SA Country Championships were their first and Archie made the most of the opportunity, placing first in two Superfish events. Archie also won his first ever SAPSASA medal, as did Luke Janssen and Emily Williams.

SEABL Pioneers

suffer first home loss in shootout with Supercats

The bottom line in the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers’ first Icehouse loss for the season on Friday night was you just can’t let Geelong get out by 20 points. Once the Supercats established that margin during the third quarter it was always going to be a long way back for the home side and while they still had the opportunity to pinch the victory, the East Conference top ranked Supercats were able to hold on for a 114-110 away victory.

Coach Richard Hill knew the contest would be an old fashioned shootout because of the way Geelong plays. “It’s certainly good for the crowd,” Hill said. “They hardly every play man to man defence, it’s all zone and trap plays and that means there’s always lots of scoring opportunities.” The coach suspected his team might be due for a let down and in the end to still be in the contest in the dying seconds wasn’t such a bad thing. “You want to win every game you

play but we’ve been playing well and you don’t want to be too negative about it,” Hill said. The Pioneers are making no excuses but they have played five games in 13 days, including road trips to Hobart and Albury, and the Supercats would’ve been unhappy about dropping a home game in their last outing. The Pioneers still sit atop the South Conference standings with the coach focussed on the areas that need improvement. The Pioneers were outrebounded

to the tune of 25 boards and that will be a focus of this week’s training. “Our problems on Friday night were in the paint,” Hill said. “To be honest I expected our big guys to be our advantage and it wasn’t - our big guys got smashed.” Ben Allen had a quiet night after a couple of big weekends and Jan Warbout had a rare quiet night, while Robinson didn’t get the job done on the boards but made up for it with a team high 30 points,

shooting at an astonishing 73 percent from the floor. Sharpshooter Erik Burdon hitting only 1/11 from beyond the arc was also a stat the coach would not expect to see again in season 2013. “It was just one of those nights for Ezi (Burdon),” Hill said. “That will never happen again.” And Burdon was no orphan, with the Pioneers unusually quiet from beyond the arc, not that Geelong was any better, as both sides only scored 15

points apiece from three point territory. While the coach has identified some systems he wants to put in place at the defensive end of the court, the fact the Pioneers created 22 turnovers shows they are doing something right with their defensive pressure. Tom Daly led the way with his relentless scrapping, creating four turnovers and also having his biggest offensive contribution since becoming a Pioneer with 23 points. Brad Hill (26); Robinson (30) and Burdon (15) were the other major contributors on the scoreboard. The Pioneers head to Canberra this weekend for a Saturday night clash with the Gunners, who sit fifth on the East Conference standings with a 6-6 win-loss record. SEABL Inaugural

captain’s breakfast kicks off with a superstar headline act When it comes to South Australian sporting icons Brett Maher stands as tall as any athlete. A triple Olympian and a triple NBL championship

player, Maher (pictured left and below) ranks as one of the greatest 36ers of all time. Maher also skippered his country at the 2001 Goodwill Games. This Friday morning, he is the headline act at the inaugural Pioneers Captain’s Breakfast at the Commodore on the Park. A known story-teller,

Maher has not just a decorated career to share but also the heartbreak of losing a child and the work the Hudson Maher Foundation is now doing to prevent more families suffering the same heartache he and wife Tanya have, after losing Hudson to a rare bone marrow condition. Pioneers skipper Matt Sutton (pictured right) will host the event, which the club is looking to make a permanent fixture on the calendar as a kick off event on Gold Cup Day - the social event of the season in Mount Gambier. The $45 a head function starts at 7.30am with Maher taking the microphone at 8am. Tickets are available at the Commodore on the Park. - 035

compact SUV Ford has ever developed.” The newest member of Ford’s SUV family is the first Ford to have an EcoBoost engine standard, complemented by a proven Duratorq turbo-diesel. The new Ford Kuga is the centrepiece of Ford’s strategy to expand into one of the fastestgrowing Australian SUV segments by offering a surprising

array of features and technologies. The Ford Kuga has been awarded a maximum five-star rating by both EuroNCAP and the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Book your test drive - phone 8721 3400 or scan this QR code to book direct.

Mount Gambier’s international racer Levi Day has signed to ride in Japan’s biggest motorcycle race, the Suzuka 8-Hour Endurance Race. Britishbased Day, 23, will give the Over Racing Projects team added international flavour – a Japanese team, fielding an Italian Aprilia RSV4 1000cc machine, with riders from Japan (former GP rider Toshiyuki Arakahi) and Italy. The Suzuka event on July 28 is a round of the World Endurance Championship. It will be Day’s first race in Japan, adding to a burgeoning international career that has already seen him compete in England, Spain and South Africa. Over Racing team principal Kensi Sato is no stranger to Australian riding talent, having competed in the 1977 Australian Grand Prix at Bathurst. “To be selected by Over Racing to ride in Suzuka is very exciting; I have always dreamed of travelling to other countries to race,” Day said. “When you look at previous years’ entry lists and winners, including Australian’s Wayne Gardner, Kevin Magee Mick Doohan, Daryl Beattie, Tony Hatton and Mick Cole. it is a very prestigious race meeting. Taking new steps in my career is very exciting and I just look forward to the experience. “It will be a challenge learning the famous Suzuka circuit on a new machine, but it is a flowing circuit like Phillip Island. But I have had experience dealing with new circuits and machines by competing in the Spanish 125 championship and now the British Championship. “I’m not sure where this ride with Over Racing might lead, but the idea of racing regularly in the World Endurance Championship really appeals.”
