FASHION STUDIO: Break-through
Context: Acdamic
Type: Group project
Role: Research, Design and Render
Date: Mar 2023
Duration: 4 month
This Fashion Studio is based on a garment by fashion designer Nova Chiu. By combining elements unique to this garment, the interior design presents a new “break-through” idea. Nova Chiu created a series of garments based on the theme “Layers”, which represents the breaking of cultural boundaries and the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The design conveys an optimistic and positive emotion.
The diverse cultural background of Nova herself, combined with the closed environment of the pandemic era, has inspired the design of this garment. Taking this as the context, a fashion studio belonging to the Nova team has been created.

Rosalie Sharp Pavilion
Address: 115 McCaul Street, Toronto, Ontario
Category: Institutional (Education)
Architect: Bortolotto
Year of renovation: 2018
Storeys: 3

The facade of the building consists of a twisted perforated stainless-steel scrim with edges peeling outward and upward. It is also the most striking part of the building, with intricate lace-like patterns. The lacy facade is very practical and can be adapted to the Toronto weather. It is topped with heating wires to prevent icicles from forming. There are also snowboards installed at the rear and a gutter at the lower edge.
The laser-cut dynamic pattern of scrim represents a data visualization mapping of Toronto. The center is Dundas and McCaul, the location of OCADU and AGO. Circles indicate art galleries and design studios, dark checks indicate public art areas, and chevron perforations indicate art communities. This design is to show that urban space is influenced by art and design production.

Not only showing the brand to visitors, but also letting employees see the fruits of their efforts is an important means of improving work enthusiasm and self-actualization. Display spaces with brand characteristics are designed on the first and second floors, and the layout can be changed according to different events.
In order to make the designer’s team can enjoy their own culture in this workspace, a narrative space was created. A fabric screen displaying the brand, a display space for seasonal designs and a smart screen are set up at the entrance of the studio. More cohesion can be achieved not only for visitors but also for employees.

SCENT SCULPTURES
A scent installation designed for Nova Chiu is directly connected to the ceiling and the HVAC system, with a central device that doubles as a diffuser. The surrounding hanging material is made out of scented fabric.

WORKING SPACE
The fashion studio for Nova has designed many customized functional spaces to respond to different tasks and positions. Try to help professionals achieve their goals in these spaces.

WANDEROFF
Context: Acdamic
Type: Individual project
Date: April 2023
Duration: 8 month
In this project, the aim is to provide at least six months of off-grid living in fully remote areas. Providing a life option that anyone can participate in. Not only promotes ecological sustainability but also benefits our physical and mental well-being.
This project base on Canadian context, build on the Bombardier Bi-Level Cab Car which is used in Toronto as GO Train, and transformed into a mobile living space. It utilizes data from Alberta province to calculate energy demand and production.

Travel
Consumerism has resulted in excessive consumption and an uneven distribution of resources. In large cities, consumerism and resource consumption have been exaggerated and inflated. The centralized lifestyle, while offering various avenues for consumption, also disconnects people from the collection and consumption processes of resources. This biased perception of resource value and sustainability has contributed to the issue at hand.
The decentralized lifestyle as a choice is reflected in the mobility feature of this project. “It is the movement as well as the sights going by that seems to make things happen
in the mind and this is what makes walking ambiguous and endlessly fertile: it is both mean and end, travel and destination”(Adams).
In the process of evaluating feasible practical actions, a mobile living space can take people out of the city and bring them back, reducing sacrifices people mzay have to make for a lifestyle change. Ultimately, the project is not solely driven by human needs. Starting from a perspective of coexistence and striving for a balanced approach, the fundamental goal is to translate this approach into practical movements that can be adopted by people.

While complete off-grid living is an ideal state, it’s a known fact that humans cannot completely isolate themselves from group. Therefore, this project also takes on the form of a small-scale eco-village, aiming to create a friendly and sustainable community with different individuals.

The living room adopts the traditional Tibetan design. The climate in Tibet is cold in winter and people spend most of their time indoors. Therefore the living room of new Canadian house uses warm, saturated colors and fabrics to create a warm feeling. The materials used in this space gives a strong closed and warm feel even with a large window.

The featured wall in the stairwell, kitchen, washroom and living room uses traditional Ukrainian floral patterns, adapt with some other elements to make it better blend in with the surrounding design.
