Ashby Big Weekend Ashby Big Weekend is making its debut on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August.

The event organised by Ashby Town Council in conjunction with Radar Event Services & Kangaroo UK will incorporate Ashby’s newest event from 2021, Ashby Proms in the Park and a long running event for Ashby, REALfest.

Two days packed full of great entertainment are planned, all on Ashby Bath Grounds. The line-up for Saturday begins with a street dance performance from Expressions Street Dance

Troupe followed by local bands W3 and Big Mog & the Alley Cats, leading into Meat Loaf and Kings of Leon tribute acts. To end the day on a high a screening of Grease the Singalong Musical will start at 8.30pm. Whether you come as a T-Bird or one of the Pink Ladies be sure to dress up ready for your singalong – there’s even a prize for the best group fancy dress!

From 12noon through to 6pm, you can also browse the many local craft stalls at the artisan market running and keep the kids happy with a whole host of children’s arts, crafts and entertainment.

Sunday’s Proms in the Park live entertainment kicks off at 5pm and promises to be a much more relaxed event. From 1940s swing with Sophie Dangerfield to soul and Motown hits with Madison Avenue UK and classics from the 14 to 16 piece swing orchestra that is Ashby Big Band you know you’ll have a toe tapping time. Sunday’s finale will see the best-selling female group The D-Day Darlings joined on stage by The D-Day Juniors!

Local Community News

Melbourne Assembly Rooms celebrate their 10th anniversary!

Melbourne Assembly Rooms, built in 1897 and the former senior school, is celebrating 125 years since its building and ten years since being taken over by the local community. A 30-year lease is about to be signed to secure the premises and a new round of building work is taking place on the Grade 2 listed building which will include work on the windows, brickwork, guttering, lowering the boundary wall and the creation of an outdoor space. Better known locally as MARs, the venue has a full-time manager and a board made up of local people.

Ten years ago, there was little energy in the venue, now some 50,00 people attend each year and the last 5 shows have been sell outs. Weekly and monthly over 50 classes and meetings take place cementing the Assembly Rooms reputation as the town’s meeting place.

“This little venue is forging a big reputation and is the jewel in the town’s crown, praised by musicians, comedians and theatre groups as one of the area’s best performance spaces” (Colston Crawford, Derby Telegraph) The latest performance was by broadcaster and national treasure Mark Radcliffe who entertained a capacity crowd with songs and stories from his life, the next is by international star Teddy Thompson, UK born but now New York based, who is playing Melbourne on a short 4-date tour of the UK. There is a full programme of performances in the Autumn and Winter including the return on stage of St Michaels Players; shows celebrating the music

of the Four Seasons, the Rolling Stones, Slade, Pink Floyd; concerts by local performing groups including Achoir’d Taste, the Operatic Society and the Village Folk shows with the Sounds of the Sirens, AJ Clarke & Dave Pegg & Merry Hell.

A closely guarded secret, at the moment, is the return to the venue of someone who performed there 8 years ago. He is now a recording star in North America and touring in the UK. He always promised to return and play and is due to do so in November.

The Assembly Rooms is not just a performance space. It is also available for hire to put on a class, meeting, celebration or wedding. There are actually six weddings taking place this year and the flexibility, central location and uniqueness is ideal for celebrations.

The National Forest Trek – 75 miles, 3 days, plenty of fun!

Beacon Hill in Charnwood is the starting point of the National Forest Trek, now in its second year and taking place from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th September along the 75-mile National Forest Way. The route reveals the best the National Forest has to offer across a wide variety of landscapes. You’ll explore areas you might know and plenty of hidden gems along the way too. You’ll pass through the almost primeval ancient landscapes of Charnwood with its rocky outcrops, rolling hills and parkland, take in iconic views and visit some of the best wildlife spots in the region. The trek will take you through to places steeped in fascinating industrial heritage across the heart of the Forest, showcasing the extraordinary landscape transformation that’s taken place over the last three decades, where open cast mining has been replaced by newly planted woodland, thriving wetlands and colourful wildflower meadows. Finally, with the end nearly in sight, you’ll take in the pretty villages of Needwood before an atmospheric and emotive finish at the

striking National Memorial Arboretum, a place of reflection and remembrance.

The National Forest Trek will be an exhilarating way to challenge yourself this year – training over the summer, then undertaking one, two or the whole three-day adventure in the company of your friends, family or colleagues. You’ll have a lot of fun enroute, and you can use the experience to raise funds for a cause that’s important to you if you wish. Two Months to Stronger Abs – Month 2

6 Do 10 reps on one side before repeating on the other leg.

Make sure that you don’t arch your lower spine more and aim to keep the neutral position of the spine and pelvis.

Welcome to month two of my favourite abdominal exercises and the progressions you can do once you have learned the basics.

REMEMBER – You should feel NO pain in your lower back and you should only attempt these exercises if you are fit and well. Not sure?

Single Leg Stretch – beginner variation This is where things get harder so don’t worry if you can’t do it or if you need to go back to some of the other exercises.

Single Leg Lift with Pull 1 Begin with a neutral spine and pelvis – legs straight, tailbone heavy and on the floor. You should have a slight arch in your lower spine, enough to slide a hand underneath and if you put both hands on your pelvis/lower abdominals it should feel level.

2 Using the breathing technique from last month, inhale to prepare.

3 Exhale, lift one leg into a ‘table top’ position – the angle of your knee stays the same, you lift your thigh towards you so your knee is over your hip and foot in line with your knee – take hold behind your thigh and gently pull your leg towards you.

4 Inhale, straighten the leg towards the ceiling or forward if your hamstrings are tight.

5 Exhale, leg back to table top, grab behind your thigh and repeat again.

1 Begin with a neutral spine and pelvis.

2 Exhale as you lift one leg to ‘table top’ followed by the other.

3 Inhale to prepare.

4 Exhale, take hold behind your right thigh, gently pull the leg towards you as you straighten your left leg to the ceiling.

5 Inhale as you switch legs (the left leg comes to table top and the right leg begins to straighten).

6 Exhale take hold behind your left leg, gently pull towards you as the right leg straightens.

7 Repeat this 10 times in total, take a 30 second break and repeat again for 10 times.

Remember to keep the spine and pelvis in neutral. It is natural for the lower spine to lose some of the arch at this point but it should not arch more! There should be no pain in your lower back and your stomach muscles should be pulling towards to floor not pushing to the ceiling.

Do your abs feel stronger yet? Keep going and they will!

Breedon Church & Heritage

A home fit for an Archbishop Did you know Breedon can lay claim to Britain’s last Archbishop? Before the creation of the Archbishopric of York (in 735), there was only one Archbishop in Britain, and in 731 a certain Tatwine, abbot of Breedon, was chosen for the job. His appointment shows how important Breedon was at that time, as do the few fragments of his monastery that survive to the present day.

I say few, but actually the sculpture that remains at Breedon represents one of the largest and best collections in the country.

Over 30 pieces adorn our walls with assorted flora, fauna and figures demonstrating the high skill of the Mercian craftsmen who produced them. Horsemen and spearmen hunt amongst fantastic beasts inspired by Syrian art, saints with fabulous moustaches parade around with books and (my personal favourite) inquisitive imps peer out of foliage. With all this to celebrate, it’s little wonder that this is our focus for the Stories in Stone event on Saturday 9th July.

From 10am to 3pm, take part in our family

sculpture trail to discover more about these fascinating artefacts and see local stonemasons from ASBC demonstrate stone carving techniques.

Children can also have a go at making their own clay carving to take home for £2 each.

Tiny gardens can bear fruit Did you know that a large tub can support a small shrub and even a small tree which is on a dwarf rootstock? This means you can potentially have fruit trees close to your kitchen door even if your garden is paved.

A patio fruit tree is a great way of having a productive tree in a small space. I suggest a pot of no less than 50cm in diameter. You may get less fruit than a tree planted in open ground and the life span may be limited to 10 years, but even so it is worth doing. Fruit trees in pots must be regularly watered as rainfall will not be enough.

For pears and apples to pollinate there needs to be two types of cultivars. Good genetically dwarf apple varieties include Maloni Billy, Maloni Lilly, Maloni Sally and Garden Red, all of which are dessert apples. For small root stock apples varieties include Fiesta, Greensleeves, Kidds Orange Red and Sunset which are dessert apples and ‘Arthur Turner’ Howgate Wonder and Lane’s Prince Albert, which are cookers. As for pears, a good one is ‘Garden Pearl’ and a patio

Similarly, there are genetically dwarf and grafted cherries, plums and gages available. Slightly less common fruit trees such as peaches, apricots and nectarines when grown in pots can easily be covered in winter, helping to protect them from the cold and reducing the chance of fungal diseases setting in. The best fruiting tree for a pot is a fig, and the restricted root growth actually helps the production of figs.

In terms of compost, use a John Innes No 3 and make sure the pot has holes for drainage and some broken crocks or stones in the bottom to aid drainage. Tubs will need regular watering, and fertiliser a couple of times a year will help your plants, and every three years or so re-potting will be necessary.

Summertime Extravaganza!

This year has already seen so much going on around the country, especially with the wonderful celebrations over the jubilee weekend!

Unfortunately, the great British weather stopped our June craft fair in it’s tracks. As a charitable organisation, this has been a blow but, we continue, onwards and upwards!

Summer brings the promise of better weather and lots more fun things to do down at the furnace. Of course, we will continue with our monthly Furnace Craft Fairs on the first Sunday of the month and Furnace Motor Clubs on the second Tuesday of the month;

both of which are extremely popular and well worth a visit. On top of that, we are welcoming two outdoor theatre performances starting with the hugely popular HandleBards performing their take on Twelfth Night on Friday 22nd July, which will be hilarious, and The Wild Geese Company performing their family show, The Green Knight on Thursday 4th August.

On Sunday 31st July, we welcome everyone to a free to enter event for the community, our Seaside Pirate Day, complete with Punch and Judy, Fairground games, rides and a pirate treasure hunt . We will also be running our first ever Picnic in the Park on Sunday 14th August with music from Force Ten Big Band. This is free unless you want to reserve a VIP seat complete with homemade cream tea.

Question Time with FISHERS SOLICITORS Do you need a settlement agreement?

We’ve seen a lot of change in the job market over the past couple of years. Employees have been increasingly willing to leave a job behind if they’re unhappy and we’ve all had to adapt to new ways of working. If a dispute has arisen in your workplace, a settlement agreement could be the best way forward.

What’s a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement is a legally binding document that’s created to end a dispute between employer and employee without the need to go to an employment tribunal. They’re often used when an employee is leaving work, but they can also be useful when there’s another kind of dispute.

How do we agree on terms?

The terms of your agreement need to be agreed upon between employer and employee. This could be a simple process. If your employment is ending your employer could make you a financial settlement offer. If you accept it the settlement agreement will set out what you’ve agreed. However, it can be more complicated than that.

settlement, the agreement needs to confirm how much is being paid, whether it’s being paid in instalments and whether any tax needs to be deducted.

Equally, you don’t have to have a financial settlement. The agreement might have been needed because of something that needed to change for you to stay in your job. Do I need a solicitor?

There are various statutory requirements about the terms that must be in a settlement agreement. It’s important to have the agreement checked by a solicitor to make sure it meets all those requirements. If you’re an employee you must have legal advice otherwise the agreement won’t be legally binding. Your employer is also legally required to contribute to your independent professional advice from a solicitor.

The settlement agreement document will need to set out what the dispute was and what you’ve agreed. Sometimes, a settlement agreement can be offered by an employer if they’ve come across something that could lead to a tribunal claim in the future.

As an employer, it’s also a good idea to get your own legal advice to make sure you’ve covered everything. The tax rules around settlement agreements can be complex. You may also want to discuss the possibility of a claim going to the employment tribunal and what the outcome of that might be when you’re deciding what offer to make.

Outdoor Summer Fun at Calke With summer holidays fast approaching, now is the time to get outdoors and explore all Calke has to offer. You can sightsee Calke by two wheels every day from Monday 18th July or at weekends beforehand, from 10am to 4.30pm. We encourage all riders to enjoy a leisurely cycle along the Tramway Trail on a bright summer’s day and soak up the view from the comfort of your own saddle.

If you prefer to drink in the atmosphere of summer on foot, Calke has a variety of walks to keep you in touch with nature or provide an enjoyable adventure for the family dog. Dogs are welcome to enjoy all areas of the parkland, gardens and stableyards.

They can also join you on park guide tours, excluding the Deer Park, and garden tours provided they are on-lead.

If you have little ones that are keen to learn how to ride a bike, we’re holding cycling sessions down at Calke Explore over the summer, teaching the basics of cycling. The humble bumblebee (and friends) Why we all need to make a beeline to our buzzing friends, who are pivotal to the future of our planet.

The bee population (bumblebees and the 25,000 other recorded species that exist), have been too regularly dismissed in the past as simply the overseers of pollination… and of course useful if you want to spread a bit of honey on your toast.

Yet the reliance both we and the wider environment have on bees moves them straight to the upper echelons of some of the planet’s most valuable entities.

Consider that at least 30% of the world’s crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive, and suddenly our perception of bees takes a different slant.

Unfortunately, bee populations around the world are in decline. Climate change causes some flowers to bloom earlier or later than usual, meaning bees have fewer food sources at the start of the season. They suffer habitat loss from development and a lack of bee-friendly flowers, and some colonies collapse due to plants and seeds treated with pesticides.

The good news is that protecting these little wonders is not just good for the environment, but a joy in itself. Several organisations run bee initiatives; from Bee Walks, in which volunteers traverse set routes to map out observations of bee activity; to community and education groups at libraries, stalls and fetes that raise money and awareness.

You can also create a buzz in your own back garden, by laying a foundation to encourage bees into the space, where what’s around them will thrive: Bee-friendly plants Use bee-friendly plants, patio pots, herbs in a planter, with hanging baskets and crocuses creating colour and helping bees flourish.

Gracious greens Consider adding fruit and veg to your garden, where possible; bees will be instantly attracted.

An annual affair Try to keep planting throughout the season in order to provide food and shelter for bees. They actually require nectar and pollen across all four seasons, while keeping the grass long offers great refuge.

Arrest the pesticides Obviously, removing or greatly reducing the use of pesticides in your garden will have a hugely beneficial effect on the bee population, so don’t be afraid to throw away that ‘bug gun’ and let nature do its bit.

New arrivals Also consider welcoming in ‘beneficial insects’ such as hoverflies, beetles and ladybirds, as these perfect partners will all help your bees flourish.

Why not start a buzz in your community, and help nature in the process!

Protecting your home The Property Protection Trust (PPT) is a Life Interest Trust incorporated into a Will which allows the testator to give a lifetime interest in their share of the main residence (or the whole of the beneficial interest in the main residence if solely owned) to a beneficiary of their choice, this beneficiary would be called the Life Tenant. Giving them a lifetime interest means that the Life Tenant will never own the property or share of the property that is held in trust absolutely, however they will be entitled to lifetime enjoyment of the property and any income which may arise (i.e. if they decide to let the property out). When the Life Tenant no longer has a right to benefit from the property due to their death or by termination of the trust, the property is subsequently passed to the ‘remainderman’ beneficiary/ies as described in the Will.

Another reason a PPT may be suitable is if there are concerns over asset preservation should long term care be required in the future. Many peoples’ largest asset is their property in which they reside and this is often something people want to preserve the worth of in order to maximise the inheritance passed to their chosen beneficiaries. The PPT offers protection following

the ‘first death’ by passing the deceased’s share of the property into trust rather than directly into the estate of the survivor. This means that if the survivor requires long term care in the future then they do not have the deceased’s share of property calculated as part of their wealth, but they do have a lifetime interest in it so they can enjoy it as if it is their own.

It’s always worth seeking advice from a suitably qualified adviser to see if this type of planning is suitable for you and help set things up for you.

In what circumstances would a PPT be appropriate for you?

One of the most common reasons for the use of a PPT is to protect against what is known as ‘sideways disinheritance’.

Sideways disinheritance is simply the common act of the spouse/partner of the deceased remarrying or recoupling and deciding to favour the new family in their Will. This
