Body Matters

What is good metabolic health?

These are the 5 markers currently used to establish a person’s metabolic health; blood pressure, waist circumference, blood glucose level (HbA1c), blood triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Your metabolism is the process of how your cells convert what you eat & drink into energy. To maintain good metabolic health, your metabolism has to be in balance. That is, the process of eating and energy production should cause minimal blood glucose (BG) & blood insulin spikes. Frequent disruption of this can put us at risk of poor metabolic health and the associated conditions such as weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, tiredness etc.

An adult human should have approximately 5 grams (1 teaspoonful) of BG circulating in their 5 litres of blood. This is all that is required to maintain the metabolic processes. Insulin is a master hormone secreted from the pancreas.

When our BG level rises, the body has to work very hard at bringing the BG level back down - because high amounts of glucose are very damaging to every organ of the body.

The pancreas promptly responds by secreting more insulin until the BG level is lowered. The muscles can use the glucose and some can be stored in the liver. When these stores are full the liver will then convert the excess circulating glucose into triglycerides, a fat, that will be stored in and around the body.

but cause them to be less responsive to the effect of insulin - this is called Insulin Resistance.

Hence, we need more and more insulin to lower that BG. Eventually, our pancreas struggles to continue to meet the demand & the BG levels start to rise - this is an unhealthy metabolic state. A pioneering pathologist, Dr Joseph Kraft, identified that Insulin Resistance can develop up to 20 years before routine blood tests pick up a raised BG level. He developed a test to assess insulin levels, which is aptly called the Kraft test.

Health conditions that high blood insulin levels can contribute to include vascular disease, erectile dysfunction, poor wound healing, brain problems, a lowered immunity and many more.

However there is hope, with all this insight into how the body works and the development of equipment that allow point of care insulin testing, we are now able to test blood insulin levels.

We can look at modifiable risk factors that may be contributing to poor metabolic health and provide guidance on how to prevent it and even reverse it!

Bosworth Medieval Festival 2022 returns in August It’s back! The hugely popular Bosworth Medieval Festival returns in August, following two years in which it didn’t go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The two-day event – which attracts thousands of visitors, re-enactors and traders from across the UK and beyond – takes place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August this year, at the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.

Tickets to the event are valid for the whole weekend, which means that visitors can attend the Bosworth Medieval Festival, which runs from 10am to 5.30pm, on either or both days for no extra cost. Once through the gates, all events during the two days, except author talks, are completely free of charge.

The family friendly festival features battle reenactments by the Wars of the Roses Federation – including a 20-minute re-creation of the Battle of Bosworth on both afternoons with hundreds of re-enactors. Destrier’s horsemen and women return with their mounted skill at arms and cavalry display and the fascinating Death of Richard III presentation, which was a huge hit with the crowd in 2019. They will also play a major role in the Battle of Bosworth reenactments.

There will be large living history encampments to explore, archery, cannon fire demonstrations, medieval falconry, a jester, musicians, the King’s Executioner, Knight School, a storyteller, guided tours, author talks, a medieval craft market,

medieval cooking demonstrations and food tasting, hands-on games and competitions for children, hands-on archaeology, craft events and much more.

A wide range of food concessions will be available on site, and there is a large and welcoming real ale bar.

Authors giving talks at the Festival include Tracy Borman, Nathen Amin, Annie Garthwaite, Julian Humphreys, Toni Mount and Philippa Vincent-Connolly. Admission to the talks, as well as the Wars of the Roses Q & A on Saturday, is not included in the Festival ticket price.

2022 Packington Annual Village Show Are your leeks looking good and your scones smelling scrumptious? Because it’s not long to go until this year’s Annual 2022 Village Show, which will be held on Saturday 3rd September at the Memorial Hall in Packington.

It’s a great opportunity for everyone to get involved, whether you want to showcase your skills and enter or simply just want to take a look at the fabulous pieces the many talented gardeners, bakers, crafters and photographers in the community have created.

The show will feature the usual sections for home grown vegetables and flowers plus items of craftwork as well as some newer options, such as Sloe Gin in our Homebrew section.

The Conservation Volunteers

Encountering wildlife Over the past two months, regular members of volunteer work parties with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) have been encountering all kinds of wildlife. From ravens and falcons to some beautiful wildflowers and insects there’s always something new to encounter, identify and learn about at the numerous sites we work at.

We even had an impromptu tracking session after encountering some wild mammal footprints recently – do you recognise the footprint in the photo? Our staff and volunteers are keenly interested in many areas of ecology, and if you’ve ever wanted to learn more whilst developing new skills as part of a group, why not join in with our volunteer events?

Everybody is welcome, and with increasing amounts of research showing just how amazing being outdoors in nature is for our wellbeing and health, now is the perfect time to get involved (whilst the summer is here).

Moira Furnace Folk Festival From Friday 19th to Sunday 21st August Moira Furnace Folk Festival features some well-known and talented main acts, plus local and national, up and coming artists. Most events take place on the green site of Moira Furnace, with a ceilidh on Saturday night at the Miners Welfare, just a few hundred metres from the main site. Singarounds and sessions also take place at local pubs, some 10 minutes’ walk from the festival main site.

There are concerts all weekend in two marquees, each with a raised stage and PA system, plus sing-arounds in the Loft of the Furnace building and various marquees. A wide variety of dancing including Morris, Appalachian Step and Rapper return this year.

Saturday night’s Ceilidh will be in the form of a dance along with Alterego, the talented family band specialising in foot tapping ceilidh dance music and playing lively original and traditional tunes. No experience is required, as knowledgeable caller, Bob McLean, will lead everyone through the dances. You’ll be

guaranteed a fun filled evening of lively dancing, good music and great company!

There’s plenty of fun entertainment and activities for the children as well as a choice of trade and food stalls, plus a real ale bar.

Visitors travel from all over the UK for this popular event so we are extremely lucky to have it right here on our doorstep. Weekend tickets are available as well as tickets for Friday evening, all day Saturday and all day Sunday or just the Saturday night ceilidh. You can even choose to stay and camp to enjoy the weekend to the max!

During the weekend the Moira Furnace site will be open to the public so head down and enjoy some of the free concerts and browse the stalls or even try your hand at circus skills and join in the sing-arounds.

The National Trust

Happenings in the House Calke Abbey, ‘the un-stately home’ is well worth a visit when you arrive on the estate. It’s a house where time stood still and tells the story of the Harpur family, who developed the mansion over several generations.

When the National Trust took on the property in 1985, many of the rooms had been abandoned for decades and were in a state of decline.

Calke Abbey reflects a period in the twentieth century when many country houses were lost, largely due to implications from World War Two. Luckily, Calke survived, by entrenching within the mansion and closing off some of the house.

Because of this, the mansion contains both grand and deserted damaged rooms.

Little has changed since then, as the Trust decided to only carry out essential repairs, leaving the house as a time capsule that echoes back to the late nineteenth century. Upstairs, the house reveals a massive contrast between the majestic and eroded rooms. Cross the threshold into the lavish Dining Room, Library and Saloon and you’ll be greeted by a plush red carpet. However, as you venture past these rooms, into the abandoned School Room and Sir Vauncey’s childhood bedroom, the carpet turns into a weathered beige, reflecting its surroundings.

So, as you take in the peeling wallpaper and collections of objects that may look strewn together to some, remember that it’s intentional and takes work to maintain.

There is a lot to see inside the house, from fossils and taxidermy to a discarded doll’s house, horse paintings and even a statue of duelling frogs. The house team is always working to find new ways of displaying Calke’s vast collection, so there is always something new to see.

In fact, this month in the great Dining Room, the table has been laid out ready for dessert.

You may think that the table needs a tablecloth; however, this was typically removed after the main course to reveal the table underneath for dessert. The crockery featured in the dessert service is from around 1850 and comes from Coalport and Coalbrookdale.

It’s exciting to see the table once again set! Because of the ever-changing collection in the house, it’s worth revisiting, as there will always be a new addition, like the table set or something that you didn’t notice before.

In Your Garden

Mount Saint Bernard For many years I had heard there was a lovely, local garden associated with an abbey. I have found it and visited. The garden is at Saint Bernard Abbey located within the Charnwood Forest in the middle of the triangle between Whitwick, Thringstone and Shepshed. It was an enjoyable visit and you should visit between July and September when the roses are out.

I’m saying this with some caution though as the Abbey feels like a lovely secret. A quiet and tranquil place. It is a working Monastery where monks still reside. I saw a sign; ‘respectful visitors are welcome to the garden’.

There are two gardens that I would describe as rose gardens. The first rose garden is set out in front of the Abbey. Four long beds set between a pathway and grass lawns are simply filled with roses. All of the roses are different varieties and colours and the effect is spectacular. A kaleidoscope of colour and lovely smells. It is old fashioned in its simplicity and a reminder that less is more.

As you can imagine the scent from the mix of these old roses is sweet and heavenly. I really enjoyed seeing and smelling this abundant display of roses. It makes such a change from the usual modern day mixed herbaceous borders

The second garden is situated behind the front portion of the Abbey. This garden does in the main contain rose beds which edge either side of the pathways. Benches are frequently placed so you can enjoy the gardens from different perspectives. The rose lined pathways climb steadily to give unexpected views. You will see that the garden is situated on a stone outcrop.

On the top of the rock are Laurel and mature trees growing in what seems to be an impossibly shallow depth of soil. It just shows how amazing and adaptive plants are.

There is a car park opposite the Abbey with an honesty box for payment although Charnwood is a beautiful area of many footpaths if you fancy walking to it. Entrance to the gardens is free.

Building work update The second phase of our building work is complete; we now have another 6 clinical offices and a brand new consulting room.

You will have noticed they have started work on the creation of 5 new consulting rooms where the waiting area and entrance used to be. This does mean that patients are having to wait for their appointments in the corridors. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but unfortunately it is unavoidable. The good news is that we are now 9 months into our building project and so we only have about 4 months left before your brand new and refurbished surgery is complete.

Flu season Next month it will be the start of flu season

again. The government has changed the criteria this year and patients aged 50-64 without a long term health condition are no longer eligible for a free flu vaccination on the NHS. Therefore, we will be offering vaccinations to all patients aged 65 and over, all patients who have conditions which put them at greater risk of harm from flu and young children aged 2 and 3. We will start sending out text booking invitations and update our telephone message to let you know as soon as the clinics are available to book.

New doctor We are really pleased that Dr Crawford, who has been training with us for the past year, has now joined us permanently. We know he is already popular with patients and so this is great news.

Question Time with FISHERS SOLICITORS Is it too late for you to get a Lasting Power of Attorney?

It’s never too early for an adult to create a Lasting Power of Attorney (or LPA for short), but it can sometimes be too late. If you think that one of your relatives might be struggling to deal with their finances or make decisions about their care, an LPA enables them to hand over the reins to someone they trust. However, there are important rules that need to be followed. Read on to find out how it works and what to do if it’s too late for you to get a Lasting Power of Attorney.

How a Lasting Power of Attorney works An LPA allows you to nominate someone to handle your personal affairs if you can’t do it yourself. There are two types, finance and health and welfare. The finance version lets your representative make financial decisions, while a health and welfare LPA deals with your care, including medical decisions or whether you need residential care.

You can nominate anyone you trust to be your attorney and you don’t have to have the same person for both, or even a family member. It’s important that you have someone with the right expertise to look after your affairs and who you trust to make the decisions you would make for yourself.

To create an LPA you need to have the mental capacity to make your own decisions.

If you, or your relative, can’t do that then unfortunately you’ve left it too late. For example, you can’t create an LPA for a family member if they’ve already been diagnosed with dementia, but the lack of a diagnosis doesn’t automatically mean that they have capacity.

Your relative’s legal adviser will talk to them about the LPA to explain the details, however, this conversation will also have another purpose. Before we can create an LPA we need to be sure that they have the mental capacity to make that decision so we’ll look for signs that show they understand what’s happening. If they don’t, we’ll need to get a professional opinion in the form of a capacity assessment.

Raymond Blanc’s lemon cake Lemon cake with tea is a grand tradition at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, and it has been served here for almost 40 years.

What I love about the perfect lemon cake is it’s fresh, zesty and as light as a cloud.

Method 1 Lightly grease the loaf tin and line with greaseproof paper.

2 Then, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, cream, lemon zest, rum, salt and melted butter.

3 Sift the flour and baking powder together, then whisk into the egg mixture until smooth, spooning the mixture into the loaf tin and gently level the surface.

4 Bake for 50 minutes, turning the tin around halfway through cooking. To test the cake, insert a small knife into the middle – if it comes out clean, the cake is cooked.

5 Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool for 10 minutes.

6 Lightly brush the cake all over with the warm jam. The jam creates a barrier, so the lemon glaze is not absorbed. Leave for 5 minutes.

7 Now mix the lemon zest and juice with the icing sugar in a small pan and warm over a low heat to 35°C, until smooth. If the glaze is any hotter, it will re-crystallise, losing its shine and crispness.

8 Brush the lemon glaze evenly over the top and sides of the cake and leave for a few minutes to set.

9 Finally, place the cake on a baking tray in the oven, turn off the heat and leave for 3–5 minutes to dry the glaze – it will become translucent. Allow to cool before slicing.

For the glaze • 50g apricot jam, warmed • finely grated zest of 1 lemon, plus 3 tbsp juice • 150g icing sugar
