LifeLink Foundation is a non-profit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of life-saving and life-enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation therapy. The Foundation works in a sensitive, diligent, and compassionate manner to facilitate the donation of desperately needed organs and tissues for waiting patients, supports research efforts to enhance the available supply of organs and tissue for transplant patients, improves clinical outcomes of patients post transplantation, and works closely with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to support its goals.

liris was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic when she was five years old. Although she and her family managed her health as best as they could, her sugar levels were usually too high or too low, resulting in nearly weekly 911 calls because she would slip into a diabetic coma in an instant. At the age of 28, Aliris’ doctors placed her on the transplant waiting list for a pancreas, which would rid her of diabetes. The first call for transplant came only two months later, but sadly Aliris was sick with the flu and not able to receive the transplant. Thankfully, after another two months, a second call came and Aliris was given a new lease on life. She is no longer diabetic and can continue her work as a Patient Service Representative at Moffitt Cancer Center.

“I am grateful my donor’s family had the courage to make the decision to give life to others,” says Aliris.

“For them to think about other people while they experienced a tragedy means the world to me and other recipients.”

A

mber and Alexis are sisters who share many of the same hobbies, including taking selfies, and they also share a diagnosis of Byler Disease, in which cells in the liver are unable to release bile, thus making it difficult to digest food.

Their parents were told that both girls would need a liver

transplant to survive. The sisters received their gifts of life at the young age of three. Thanks to their donor families, Amber and Alexis are thriving as young adults. Alexis says, “I feel if it wasn’t for my donor family, I wouldn’t be here today.” Amber agrees, adding, “Thank you so much for our lives.”

recent college graduate, Gina had plans for her life—get married, have children, find and start her dream job and live happily ever after. A kidney transplant was not in her plans, but after being diagnosed with renal dysplasia, Gina learned a transplant would be needed and children would not likely be an option for her and her husband. Gina’s parents and siblings were all tested as living donors, and while both her

parents were deemed eligible to donate a kidney to Gina, her dad, Joe, was chosen as the best candidate. In January, 1994, doctors placed his kidney into Gina and 14 months later, Gina welcomed a baby girl, Sydney, into the world. “I feel blessed to have my family support and to have no complications from my transplant or my pregnancy,” says Gina.

■■ The ninth and final year of the Wild Bill Memorial Luncheon was hosted on March 31, 2017. Over the years, this event raised more than $156,000. This is a testament to the honoree, Bill Minahan—kidney recipient and former Jesuit High School football coach—who dedicated the final years of his life to provide education about organ and tissue donation and funds to assist patients in organ failure.

■■ This year, a new employee group was formed: the Employee Philanthropic Initiative Committee (EPIC). This group of internal cheerleaders works to implement events that promote camaraderie and serve as liaisons amongst departments.

■■ Augusta University Health opened a patient resource room in its transplant clinic thanks to LifeLink Legacy Fund’s support, where patients and family members find educational resources.

A

t the age of sixteen, Thomas fulfilled his teenage dream; he received his driver license and the keys to the old blue truck from his dad. It was in those moments he decided to be an organ donor, telling his mom, Susan, “What good are they to me if I’m gone?” Neither of them knew how soon that decision would affect their lives. Ten days shy of his 18th birthday, Thomas suffered a traumatic head injury in a

construction accident. Because of his decision, Thomas’s legacy lives on in four people. Speaking of their experience, Susan says, “I have often been told that I, we, the donor families, are heroes. I’m not a hero—I was simply Thomas’s Mom, honoring a decision that he made.”

H

ospitalized with severe back pain and exceptionally high blood pressure, Jennifer learned at the age of 24, that she was born with only one kidney and it was failing.

She was diagnosed with Fibromuscular Dysplasia in her renal artery, which meant Jennifer faced end-stage kidney failure.

The need for a transplant was imminent. Without hesitation, Jennifer’s identical twin sister, Melissa, was tested as a living donor and found to be the perfect match.

Because they are identical twins, the incredible gift from Melissa allows Jennifer the unique ability to live a very normal life with no immunosuppression medications, as her body recognizes the donated kidney as her own. Jennifer loves being an aunt to her four nieces, three of which are Melissa’s children, and working for LifeLink as a Hospital Development Liaison. Jennifer says, “I cannot thank Melissa enough for saving my life, and for continuing to be the best sister I could ever ask for!”

even years ago while on vacation in Mexico, a dune buggy accident changed Steve’s life in an instant. Partially paralyzed, Steve faced new challenges that he conquered with his fearless spirit. He began mentoring others with spinal cord injuries, learned to play adaptive sports and married the love of his life. However, May 2016 brought Steve a new stumbling block.

While playing sled hockey, an adaptive version of standard ice hockey, Steve ruptured his bicep. Already limited in his mobility,

the damage to his arm was devastating. Thankfully, a tissue transplant allowed Steve’s arm movement to return and for him to regain control over his life. “As a paralyzed individual, my arms are so important,” says Steve, “I will be forever grateful ® to my donor family for my gift of mobility.”

n energetic, light-hearted 15-year-old girl who loved music— especially the band “One Direction”—Alexis had a contagious personality which lit up every room she walked in.

After an unexpected medical event while working out at home with her mom, Kim, Alexis’ family honored the decision she made when she received her driver’s permit—the decision to be an organ donor. “We never second guessed our decision to honor Alexis’ wish.” says Kim, “We honored it because it was

the right thing to do. She inspired us.” Alexis continues to inspire her family, friends and community as they remember the young teen whose courageous decision continues to live on in the recipients of her organs.

hen Carlos learned he was going to be a big brother, he was upset; an only child at that point, he was content with his life.

That anger soon turned to love after Omar was born, and the two brothers formed an amazing bond. “Omar was good at fixing things.

He loved to tell me all the things I was doing wrong with my car, right before he fixed it for me,” says Carlos with a laugh. Before his passing, Omar registered as an organ and tissue donor and Carlos honored his brother’s wish, saving numerous lives—one of those

being, Rodrigo, who received his liver. Rodrigo’s family—due to his grave condition—had prepared their goodbyes when the call came that a perfect match was available. Carlos says, “Through my sorrow of Omar’s passing, I feel blessed.

Rodrigo was able to meet his grandchildren because of Omar’s decision.”

eishla was an outstanding athlete and spent most of her time playing softball and volleyball until, in 2014, her last year of college, Keishla had the sensation that something wasn’t quite right. Bouts of fatigue sent her to the doctor and tests revealed Keishla was in heart failure. Sadly, Keishla was all too familiar with the condition, as she had lost her mother to similar circumstances. Keishla was listed for a lifesaving heart

transplant and began the wait. After transplant, Keishla went back to college and finished her degree in Criminal Justice.

She is grateful to her donor and their family for saving her life.

She is also grateful for her wonderful family who supported and loved her. Keishla says, “Never give up, miracles do exist, and God always has the last word”.

rica and Pamela are sisters whose stories are intertwined in the most unique way. Erica, diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis, was in dire need of a liver transplant, which she received after an eighteen month wait and a dozen hospitals stays. Nine months post-liver transplant, in early 2011, Erica learned she would also need a kidney transplant. Without hesitation, Pamela, who had been by Erica’s side all the way, was tested as a living donor and was the perfect match. “She was a giver. I was overwhelmed by her generosity.” says Erica. Sadly, Pamela was killed in a home invasion

irst born of Todd and Angie, as well as big brother to Jeremy and Joshua, Jordon Heath had a heart of gold and loved unconditionally. He loved music and was aspiring to be a writer and producer before his tragic death in August 2016. The Heath Family allowed Jordan to become a tissue and eye donor; not knowing that decision would circle back to them. In November 2016, Todd tore his ACL and the doctor informed them he would need to receive donor tissue to restore mobility and strength. The family immediately thought of Jordan’s tissue donation. In a first for LifeLink Tissue

Bank, they were able to work with Todd’s surgeon to provide a graft from Jordan’s donation to be used to repair his father’s injury. Now, Jordan will always be with Todd literally and in spirit thanks to his tissue donation. “It is a blessing that Jordan will always be with me. I am getting my mobility back and it is because of my son,” says Todd.

lanes just don’t fall from the sky, let alone fall from the sky on my family on one of the best days of our lives,” remembers Rebecca Irizarry of the accident that resulted in tragedy, as a plane literally did fall from the sky onto the beach and immediately claimed the life of her husband, Ommy, and ultimately that of her daughter, Oceana, as well. Even in the midst of loss, Rebecca, also mother to younger daughter, Ava, chose life for others through organ and tissue donation. One of the lives saved belongs to Brandon McNaughton, who had been awaiting a liver transplant—he received his lifesaving

gift from Oceana. A year and a half later, by twist of fate, Brandon’s parents, Kelsey and Brandon Sr., got in touch with Rebecca and so began a relationship that is more family than just friends. Rebecca and Kelsey describe the connection between Ava and Brandon, who are nearly the same age, as immediate, and Ava herself feels that, through Brandon, she maintains a connection to her sister.

s a police officer, Daniel lived to protect and save those in his community. However, when Daniel was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in 2003, he became the one in need of saving. After three years on dialysis, Daniel received the gift he so desperately needed—the gift of a kidney transplant. After his transplant, Daniel dreamed of being an inspiration to others, which motivated him to enroll in college to become a nurse.

He now works as a hemodialysis nurse, a career that gives him the opportunity to share his testimony while taking care of patients every day, inspiring them with his transplant journey.

he Esquilín-Carrasquillo family remembers Eddie as a young, vibrant, happy and full-of-life man. With the nickname “Feo,” he loved his family dearly and always looked for opportunities to show his affection. In March 2013, Eddie had an accident while riding a four wheel ATV that cost him his life. Eddie’s family did not hesitate to allow Eddie to share love with others after his death through organ donation, as, only a few years prior, Eddie’s cousin received a kidney transplant that allowed him

to see the birth of his daughter.

Today six people live, thanks to Eddie, through the miracle of donation. His mother, Brenda, and his grandfather, Carmelo, firmly believe they made the correct decision because of the peace they feel every day.

hris was diagnosed with Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic disorder that causes too much copper to accumulate in the liver and resulted in liver failure, during his sophomore year at Wingate University. He was placed on the transplant waiting list in January 2015, and five days later received his new liver. Chris says, “I am very thankful for this new path God put me on, and I am going to strive to be the best version of myself in tribute to

n 2010, Mark had difficulty breathing. Multiple doctor visits revealed a diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a chronic, irreversible and ultimately fatal disease characterized by a progressive decline in lung function. Without a lung transplant, doctors gave Mark 18 months to live. A landscape architect, Mark continued to work while waiting for his call for transplant. On the day the call came, Mark left his pager and cell phone at home, but thankfully his wife was able to contact

Mark through his employer, who came rushing out to tell him the news. Mark says, “I’ve never felt better. I’ve been given another chance at life and I’m going to live it to the fullest.” Mark is a musician and considers music his ministry; his talent gave him the opportunity to give a bit of comfort to the family of his donor, as well as his own, when at their request Mark played “Amazing Grace” on his violin at the graveside of his donor.

im served his country as a U.S. Navy Seal, Special Operator 2nd Class, and spent six years protecting our freedom in foreign lands. Tim earned the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Jackie described her secondborn son as “a leader among men, brave and so very strong.” A shooting accident took Tim’s life, leaving a hole in the lives of his son and many others in his very large family, but also provided new hope for the five individuals who received his organs. A few months before his death, Tim told Jackie, “Mom, do you know what I want to be remembered for when I die? My integrity.” Jackie has a plaque in her home that says, “Integrity is doing the right thing when no one else is watching.” Tim will certainly be remembered exactly how he wished—by his integrity and the life he gave to his recipients.
