A NEW MAYOR! A huge congratulations to Councillor Hannah Gray of West Wickham Ward, who was elected Mayor of Bromley for 2020/21. Cllr Gray’s intention is to be the most pro-active Mayor in London during these unprecedented times, supporting all local initiatives virtually to start with and actually when possible. She said: “I am excited, humbled and honoured to be given this opportunity to serve our residents in this unique period of our nation’s life. We are already working together in so many ways and I am keen to help support this and am grateful for your anticipated help as we move forwards.”

Cllr Gray has chosen two charities to help raise funds for - Cystic Fibrosis Supporters and Chartwell Cancer.

The Orpington COVID-19 Mutual Aid Group has been set up by a group of volunteers that are helping vulnerable people to get their shopping done and delivered and/or collecting medicines and dropping them off. As a group they have also set up an NHS shop that is located at Crofton Scout Hall, providing free food and drink as well as other items for NHS staff. This relies heavily on donations of either the food, beverages or via money to be able to keep the shop stocked. Donations can be made via opencollective.com/ocma while food/products etc. can be dropped off at the Scout Hall or Metro Bank at the Nugent Shopping Centre (drop offs at Metro Bank can only be long life, non-perishable, items only please). The shop currently needs pasta, pasta sauce, eggs, coffee, tea bags, sugar, egg boxes (for transport), hand cream, milk, fruit & veg, frozen & ready meals, snacks (energy bars, chocolates, crisps, etc.) and cold drinks. Teepol Products is the latest sponsor of Bromley football club, Cray Wanderers. The club, known as the 'Wands' (and at one time, the 'Chocolates'), enjoys a long and outstanding history, having been founded in 1860, and claims to be the oldest club in London and the second oldest in world football. The new tie up with Teepol Products, itself a local, family-owned business, which produced the world's first synthetic detergent, brings these examples of Orpington's and world history together. The company’s managing director, Susan Moon, said: "Cray Wanderers are our local club. They're fantastic in all sorts of ways including league position, new stadium plans, and their youth and community work. I'm very happy that Teepol Products can support them. We've both been here in Bromley a long time and I'd like this to be a long-term relationship. I’m planning to add to the financial sponsorship by donating some of our cleaning products for use by people at the club and at the new ground. It will be great to see them in place and being used."

MORE Classic Newsreels of Orpington and the Surrounding Area

lifeinmagazines.co.uk Orpington Video & Film Makers (OVFM) has been filming in and around Orpington to produce a newsreel of the previous years' events. These newsreels have proved so popular that they have made more material available. To view the material please go to https://www.ovfm.org.uk/ovfm-classic-newsreels/ We would also like your help. Covid 19 and the lockdown will clearly be major events to include in our 2020 Newsreel to include in next year’s OVFM Spring Show but because of lockdown our members are unable to be out to do much filming. We would therefore like you to take films on your mobile phone, SLR camera or camcorder and send them to us so we can include as many as possible in the newsreel. These can be of anything related to Covid 19 and the lockdown e.g. empty high streets, queues outside food shops or chemists, clap for the NHS, family video calls or special activities you’ve set up in your home or garden. To fit with the film format will you please shoot in landscape format, i.e. holding your phones horizontally, if possible. The footage will probably be too much to send via email so please use any of the free file transfer systems such as WeTransfer to send films to info@ovfm.org.uk By sending your films you give permission to use all or part of them in producing OVFM films. We will be happy to acknowledge your contribution at the end of the film if you advise us that you would like this.

Bereavement Service

Living On Bereavement Service is offering phone and email support for bereaved families dealing with isolation or their grief, whether it is early days or further down the line. For more information call 07808 527677 or email heather@livingon.org.uk

When you say goodbye to a loved one, it’s important that you get the right service that’s fitting to them.

My name’s Michelle and I’m passionate about being a life celebrant. The way I work is by gaining a better understanding of the life of a loved one so that I can present a ceremony that is both bespoke and unique. A ‘Remember Me’ package also offers the option to plan a service in advance.

My second passion is the community I’ve been part of for many years; I co-founded The Bereavement Café in Orpington to offer support to those who have lost loved ones. If you need to talk about any issues relating to the loss of a loved one, please know that I am here to support others.
