5. World Pillow Fighting Championships – Sonoma County, California (July)
The World Pillow Fighting Championships has a history of over 50 years. The event originated in the small wine country town of Kenwood and celebrates community, family and freedom. At its inception, a steel pole was made to span the Los Guillicos Spring Creek, which was then filled with mud and the pillow fights were ready to make history. 12. `The Cursing Festival [Akutai Matsuri] - Nagano, Japan (December)
Taking place on the third Sunday of December every year, participants are led by 13 priests dressed as red-faced mountain goblins called tengu up Mount Atago to Atago Shrine. During the journey, people will shout curse words and insults, as well as trying to rob the priests of their offerings – those who are successful will get good luck for the upcoming year!
