face masks - an environmental hazard? Are face masks more dangerous than the virus? They are certainly more damaging to the environment and may cause problems that could last a lot longer than the virus. What impact do disposable face masks have on the environment?

As most contain plastic, disposable face masks can have a devastating impact on the environment, leading to a huge heap of waste. They have led to masses more plastic clogging up our rivers and oceans. This has direct impacts on wildlife - a young seagull has been seen in Essex, injured by a plastic mask wrapped around its legs and in Yorkshire, a peregrine falcon was seen with a mask caught in its talons. It has been said that a marine biologist found 171 plastic masks and gloves in just one hour in an estuary in Cornwall. Disposable masks are typically made from multiple layers of polypropylene, which is a type of plastic that can take hundreds of years to break down. They can also shed tiny harmful micro-plastics into our waterways, which can be consumed by fish (which can be passed onto us, when we eat seafood). The string on disposable masks can also be a danger to wildlife so if you do have to use a disposable mask

it's important to cut the string, that goes around the ear, before you dispose of it.

Can disposable masks be recycled?

Regular disposable face masks are not biodegradable, and cannot be recycled as they may carry germs involving Coronavirus so they need to be disposed of safely to prevent spreading infection.

What is a more sustainable alternative?

Obviously, if you are in constant contact with people who are affected by the virus you will have to use disposable masks for safety reasons. But in many circumstances, reusable cloth masks are a good alternative to disposable masks. Studies have found that cotton, reusable face coverings are effective at reducing Coronavirus transmissions and as they are washable, reusable and recyclable. They make an ideal choice for many consumers that care about sustainability.

We need to make sure we keep ourselves and those around us safe, but it's also important to keep our planet safe from the growing problem of single-use plastics.

8 FACE MASK HACKS 1. A pleated shape helps to create a better fit. 2.

Avoid glasses fogging up by washing them in soapy water, allow them to dry before wearing - the soap leaves a thin film on the lenses that repels condensation.

5. Upcycle old clothes into masks to help save landfill waste. 6. Add a fresh scent to your mask - an essential oil can help boost your mood and energy levels.

3. Test the breathe-ability of the fabric and use multiple layers of fabric.

7. Criss-cross each loop before hooking them around your ears if the ear loops are too big.

4.

8. Add a headband with buttons and hook the earloops to it for a more comfortable fit.

Earloops can be uncomfortable; try hooking them together with a paper-clip around the back of your head or a shoelace or ribbon can are good alternatives.
