face masks - an environmental hazard? Are face masks more dangerous than the virus? They are certainly more damaging to the environment and may cause problems that could last a lot longer than the virus. What impact do disposable face masks have on the environment?
As most contain plastic, disposable face masks can have a devastating impact on the environment, leading to a huge heap of waste. They have led to masses more plastic clogging up our rivers and oceans. What is a more sustainable alternative?
Obviously, if you are in constant contact with people who are affected by the virus you will have to use disposable masks for safety reasons. But in many circumstances, reusable cloth masks are a good alternative to disposable masks. Studies have found that cotton, reusable face coverings are effective at reducing Coronavirus transmissions and as they are washable, reusable and recyclable. They make an ideal choice for many consumers that care about sustainability.
We need to make sure we keep ourselves and those around us safe, but it's also important to keep our planet safe from the growing problem of single-use plastics.
