WELCOME Letter From The Editors The Stegela Success Mastery Team Have you ever watched a building being built? Maybe not in real time, that would take forever! I live and work in downtown San Diego. Right now our economy is great and you can see that by the number of buildings going up in downtown alone! It’s quite remarkable actually, when they go to start a new building they always start with a VISION. The next step is the FOUNDATION. They dig out the ground below the where the building is going to stand. The taller the building, the deeper the foundation has to be. They do this for many reasons, though I am not a builder, one reason I know for sure is that here in California we have earthquakes. So they have to make sure that the foundation of the building is earthquake proof. The foundation of the building is where they tap into electrical lines, sewage, and plumbing. When building a business you first need a VISION. Then you have to lay the FOUNDATION. You have to tap into resources to recharge your business and give it life. You need access to your own electric, sewer, and water systems. The larger the size of a business you want to create, the deeper the foundation needs to be and you need to be prepared for the worst, like an earthquake. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Foundation can have so many different meanings for different people. One thing holds true though, and that is foundation is education. It takes education on your part and your teams to build a solid foundation for your business. Reading this magazine is a step in the right direction. I’d like to thank our writers, editors, design, and entire team for helping us to maintain the foundation here at Life By Design Magazine so that we can continue to inform and inspire the entrepreneur world with the knowledge of business owners everywhere. Having a strong foundation is important in business, so that your business doesn’t crumble. Our hopes with the JUNE edition is that the articles in this edition help you to create a deep and stable foundation so that your business and FLOURISH. - Casey Nicole Fox CEO & Founder of Life By Design Magazine

BREAKING THE FOUNDATION OF ADDICTION The first time I tried to kill myself, I was ten years old. I

cleaned my room so that once I was gone, my family wouldn’t have so much to do, and I didn’t want to be a burden anymore. That day my older sister and I had gotten into a fight, and she called me a bitch. It seems like such a small thing, but in my mind, everyone would have been better off without me. After being physically, emotionally, and sexually abused most of my childhood, I dealt with a shame that made me feel like I could never do anything right. I felt like I would never be good enough for anyone or anything. That night, I filled the bathtub with lukewarm water and grabbed a serrated steak knife from the kitchen. I was afraid to kill myself, but I was so tired of being in emotional pain. What started as an attempt to end my life quickly became an addiction. I found that with the right amount of physical pain, I could mask my emotional pain. This addiction plagued me for the next ten years of my life and became my only coping mechanism for dealing with my problems in life. The last time I tried to kill myself, I was 20 years old. I once again filled the bathtub and had graduated to a serrated bread knife for my weapon of self-harm. I had made up my mind that the world would be better off without me. This time would be the last time. I sliced into my left wrist, and as I was about to slice into the right, I had a God moment. I felt Jesus lift me out of my pain and my misery, and I was able to feel a love I never thought I would be good enough for. Today, my body is covered in patches of scars from the many attempts I made to mask my emotional pain. I have permanent nerve damage in my left wrist from the last time I tried to kill myself. I used to be ashamed of my scars, but I now know that it is thanks to them that I can give hope to others who feel the pain I once drowned in. I am a survivor. Dealing with an addiction is tough, and it never completely goes away. Those thoughts hadn’t plagued me in years, but earlier this year, for about two whole seconds, they resurfaced. I was thankfully able to identify them and shut them down immediately. But I could never have been able to if I hadn’t changed my foundation. Addictions come in all shapes and sizes. Alcohol, drugs, self-harm, pills, abusive relationships, negative self-talk, shame, control, food, sex, pornography, video games, work, exercising, shopping, social media, and gambling

are just a few addictions that plague our society. We all look for coping mechanisms for our emotional pain and stress, but very quickly, our healthy coping mechanisms can become addictions if not done in moderation. Anything that you use to replace something else in an unhealthy way can be an addiction. ADMITTING THE PROBLEM The first step in overcoming any addiction can realize you have one. You cannot conquer what you will not confront. Admitting you have a problem begins to give you power over it instead of allowing it to have control over you. Vulnerability is essential because it allows us to put a face to the name. When we are open about our struggles, we can join arms with others who are dealing with or have dealt with similar situations. This is where the next step is so important. SUPPORT SYSTEM The second part of overcoming an addiction is having the kind of support system that will help you through your pain. Pity and shame only enable a person’s addiction, whether it be drugs, alcohol, pills, self-harm, etc. Surrounding yourself with people who can see your strengths and allow you to lean on them for support when you need it is essential. Getting a therapist, support group, or a mentor is extremely important because it brings in a third-party perspective to the issue at hand. EAT THE ELEPHANT The next step to overcoming any addiction is realizing that it is all one bite at a time, just like eating an elephant. It takes one step in front of the next; before you can learn to run, you need to learn to walk before you walk, you have to learn to crawl. But learning to crawl all starts with learning to make the next right choice. Choosing to overcome an addiction starts with wanting to overcome it and not getting discouraged along the way. No matter what addiction you or someone you love is dealing with, there is help available. You have to want it. Be sick and tired of being sick and tired. Get inspired to help others overcome their addictions as well. If we walk hand in hand with one another, we can overcome any addictions and change the foundations what have allowed us to have the addictions we covet. You are loved, accepted, and adored. Remember that, always.

STEPHEN DELA CRUZ A FOUNDATION OF

FOCUS productivity. Now as much as I wish it was as easy as saying “JUST FOCUS” and magically you would have this innate ability to create laser focus in any scenario, it simply doesn’t work that way. Focus, just like any skill comes from learning what works for you, from trial and error, and from creating an environment that fosters your focus. To first create an environment you must understand what is distracting you in the first place. Did you know that when you are in a focused state, checking your phone just one time, can pull you out of that state for thirty minutes. When you are focused you can get so much done, but that one small distraction can leave you out of your flow, for hours on end! Stephen Dela Cruz is a best selling author, speaker, and serial entrepreneur. He is the owner of Stegela Partners International Incorporated which consists of 10 corporations that employ more than 500 fulltime employees with yearly profits of 7 figures each, creating an 8-figure empire. After suffering a stroke, Stephen changed his direction and focus to creating “Income with Impact” and “Success with Significance.” Stegela Success Mastery was born out of this new mission, which is all about serving their fellow entrepreneurs. Stegela Success Mastery runs Stephen’s weekly podcast, bi-weekly mastermind group, live events and seminars, television show and through owning San Diego’s only printed entrepreneur magazine, Life By Design Entrepreneur Lifestyle Magazine. Reading through articles nowadays there always seems

to be three main steps, three keys, or three principles, to gaining everything you have ever desired in life. While I believe it is amazing to have a few options to practice and implement, I have found that when you have many options, it is harder to master one thing. I have seen it in my coaching program many times. Some call it shiny object syndrome, some call it being distracted, but overall it is just the lack of the ability to focus.

LBDMAGAZINE.COM 6 LIFE BY DESIGN JUNE 2019

When you are building your foundation it is so easy to get caught up in the 35 million articles, the 87 principles, the 52 keys to success. But if you focus on building 52 things at once, how quickly do you believe you will finish? This is why the one tool you need while you are building your foundation is focus. The world around you is filled with distractions, parties, television, heck even dogs seem to be trying to sabotage your focus and

LOOK OUT! HERE IS AN ACTION STEP! ****Make a list of everything you find yourself getting distracted by throughout your day, start by being aware of what distracts you.**** Once you have your list, stay away from those things! Well only when you are trying to be productive. If you find yourself checking your phone often, turn it on airplane mode, if you find yourself getting up to grab snacks often, then have a full snack bar beside you. Focus is something that you create in the small actions, it means giving ALL of your attention to the task at hand. As you begin to get into a flow, that state where you feel most productive. Notice where you are, what the environment is like, is it quiet, are you alone, is it dark light ETC. The more you notice the easier it will be to recreate this state in the future. Humans are creatures of habit, so there is a comfort in the familiar. If you always work in one chair, and you find yourself more focused while you sit in that chair, it may be because your mind is used to being focused when you are sitting in that chair. There are ways to hack your bodies natural reactions! So use the familiar, and create a consistent environment for you to focus in.

BIO HACK!

***Your sense of smell is your sense that most easily puts you in a rhythm, feeling, or memory. If you have a scent that you like, consider only spraying it while you want to focus. This will start to create a pattern in your brain that will help you focus whenever you smell that unique scent.*** I have heard focus described as humans real life super power. Think of all the amazing things that have been done in the world, from building skyscrapers, to traveling to outer space. These were all done because of extreme focus. Imagine everything you can do in your lifetime if you start to build your foundation with laser focus!

BUSINESS IS TOUGH? CHECK YOUR FOUNDATION. Doesn’t it sometimes feel like when

you take one step forward, you’re taking two steps back? When you feel this way, you must check your foundation. Your foundation requires discipline. If you have a weak foundation, it will be noticed, and you will feel the adverse effects. I’m sure you know that your business will only be as active as your foundational discipline, but now you are wondering what that means? You are even wondering what part of your foundation requires the most discipline.

(The Vision) I see the big yard with beautiful green grass. I feel my hands on the brown wooden fence watching the kids play or just watching cars zoom by on the red dirt road. Then feeling the calm breeze of pleasant winds filled with the fragrance of wildflowers blowing against my face while now leaning against the brown wooden fence. Again, “why am I where I am?” After half of our life has been lived, what possible factors have given us limited success and cycles of distress? As we ponder this question, I realize things about me, my past events as a child, teen and as an adult. Not sure of the details all the time yet some not so favorable emotions drive my train of thought today of why I am where I am? On some level it feels that the cycle of life is not you’re born, you live, and then you die. Some merely are born and miss living – then die. I believe I have formed my ideology on living life in pursuit of attainable goals and extraordinary dreams. Dreams which stretch my will, potential, intellect, belief, and faith. Life should be lived to arrive at a space in time which it’s not about climbing it’s about living and contributing on autopilot to enhancing all lives around us. Without this, we lack a solid foundation. Some knowledge of, some paths I’ve crossed and even some that I have consciously forgotten yet, my subconscious remembers. Living in the now brings a sense of delivery from the virtual pain of ultimate regret in the end. The last breath, be it in the next moment or next month or after the other half of my life has run its course, I am committed to developing life’s most profound meanings, it’s most fruitful value, it’s a most fulfilling journey, and you should too. So, I continue to ask, why am I where I am? What is the truth? I believe the deepest thoughts and purest replies are found at moments of vulnerability. When you quiet the noise by going on a reflective, explorative ride within, the signage upon the walls of the long-reaching tunnels of your past will likely reveal clips of truths we seek. There’s darkness pierced with flashing neon lights. Telling us, there may be some moments of weakness yet; many good deeds tilt the scale in your favor. Remember, to have a solid foundation you must understand what you are made of. Three things you want to do: 1. Ponder your peppered past experiences. 2. Know what has shaped your present skills/talents. 3. Explore and grow your emotional fitness. Your foundation is your story. . by Rashid Hill L3procoach.com

Yoichi J. Kato

Every relationship starts with a meal.

Yoichi Kato is an author, speaker, serial entrepreneur, Navy veteran. He is the co-founder of San Diego’s most popular cleaning service called Everything But Sex Cleaning Services. He is a master business networker who is always connecting people. He is also an amazing Chef who provides private chef services all over San So how exactly can a meal help Diego. Yoichi loves to help others and you build a foundation and achieve see them thrive. success? Whether you are trying to win that sexy girl or close that business deal, you have to bring in food to the table. Why you may ask? It is because food is sexy. If you want to build a strong foundation, you have to put your best spoon and fork, err I meant foot, forward.

A foundation can be described as the basis or groundwork of anything. From Wall Street Services: A successful person is one who can build a firm, solid foundation with bricks others have thrown at them. When we consider the definition as applied to the building industry, it is the base that supports the structure. Foundations are made wide so that pressure on the ground decreases. Buildings are massive structures which exert tremendous pressure on the ground and likely to sink unless the weight is evenly distributed. That is also true when creating a business; there is a lot of pressure exerted, and if you plan correctly, you will have the full support you need. The word foundation means many things. The base of a building is its foundation. Foundation is a substance that women and actors apply to their face to give a uniform color. A philanthropic organization is called a foundation. In studies, like math and science, there are core principles that are termed “foundation.” My family was involved in the Kosciuszko Foundation. I am deeply involved in Optimist International, and we have a foundation. In this type of foundation, there are some commonalities: • Legal requirements followed for the establishment • Purpose of the foundation • Economic activity • Supervision and management provisions • Accountability and auditing provisions • Provisions for the amendment of the statutes or articles of incorporation • Provisions for the dissolution of the entity • Tax status of corporate and private donors • Tax status of the foundation

To build a business, relationship, a building or an empire, you must begin with a foundation. In my family, the foundation was built on education, praying together, and helping others from friends and neighbors to the community at large.

Don’t serve an undercooked steak. Instead, present a plate of juicy, succulent and perfectly cooked threeinch filet mignon with potatoes, green beans and corn with lemon-brown butter dressing on the side.

When planning a project or creating a lecture series, there is a base of knowledge called foundation. In my multifaceted world of entrepreneurship, my foundation is based on knowledge and discipline. They are governing ideas that help me get through my challenges.

Just like its name, appetizer appeals to your appetite. As the first food presented in your meal, it should be tempting enough to make you grab a pepperoni pizza roll even though you vowed to yourself a week ago to go full vegan.

Some solid principles for a sturdy foundation: Create a corporation to separate your public and private affairs. Make sure you trust your insurance agent. Establish a manual of operations so that for each round of new business you don’t have to start from scratch. Be sure to have a decent level of technology. Be well informed in your area, and that will solidify your foundation.

Never underestimate the power of an appetizer. It can make or break your date. If you offer a lousy appetizer, you might end up eating your meal alone because your date had to make up a lame excuse that her cat is ill and had to go home. Just remember first impressions are important and you have to stay memorable.

What is the foundation of a business? Your business plans. It is the foundation of strategic planning. Second, it is used to assess a firm’s viability as a sound investment. It convinces the investors that you have thought through all aspects of starting a business, and you have a blueprint to succeed. Finally, it is a document to attract key talent to your venture.

5 STEPS TO CONSTRUCTING A SOLID FOUNDATION!

STEPHEN DELA CRUZ

When floods flow against your house or life, it will collapse into a heap of ruins if your foundation is poorly built! I believe in instilling a spiritual foundation in my children and grandchildren for the greater good of their lives...

One of Southern California’s

TOP SUCCESS COACHES

Following God and submitting to His wisdom enables you to build a foundation based on God’s values. As you found your life on Him, there are a few areas you will need to continually focus on to grow a strong, healthy spiritual life. And this won’t only benefit you; others will reap the blessings as well. 1. FAITH Your trust in God, your growing relationship with Christ, and your obedience and application of God’s Word are all crucial to building a solid foundation of faith. When storms of life come your way, you’ll be grounded in biblical truths and remain steady as a rock in your moral beliefs. Plus, you’ll remain strong inwardly by trusting in God’s sovereignty. If you disobey Him, your foundation will begin to crack. For this reason, it’s wise to seek God daily and ask Him to search your heart and make known what displeases Him. 2. GODLY RELATIONSHIPS AND FAMILY Relationships are vital and should be cherished! The people in your life — and your relationships with them — are important to God, and they need to be valued and esteemed fittingly. God desires that you love others and seek to build them up, not tear them down. Also, knowing that bad company corrupts good character, be careful about who you spend time with. 3. FINANCIAL AFFAIRS Being a good steward over your finances is a spiritual discipline that blesses God, others, and you. Living outside of your means, amassing material possessions, and accumulating irresponsible debt is unwise. When you manage your finances wisely, you eliminate needless stress. 4. NOURISHMENT AND FITNESS Your body is God’s living temple; His Spirit resides within you. When you harm your body, you’re dishonoring God. Keeping your body healthy is a spiritual discipline that is part of the life God calls you to. Living a healthy lifestyle also permits you to carry out God’s greater plans for your life. 5. SPENDING TIME WITH OTHER BELIEVERS It’s important that you’re planted in a local church where you can worship God, hear His Word, and fellowship with other members of the body of Christ. There, you’ll grow and mature spiritually, as well as be able to put to use the spiritual gifts God has blessed you with. As a result, His church will be built up.

When you wisely invest yourself in these various ways, you’ll become more spiritually, relationally, financially, physically, emotionally, and socially fit to live a life of influence for Christ. After all, He’s the chief cornerstone of your faith!

to Create Memories That Last

Koala Balderas IG: @koalasmobilerecycling Koala is a motivated owner of Koalas Mobile Recycling. In High School, he was put in remedial class although he had no learning disabilities. Today Koala is a thriving owner who gives back to local high school by purchasing prom tickets, yearbooks and dance tickets, etc. for the students who need help.

Some people want to start, or go for their dreams but are too afraid of failure, and never try. When I shared my vision of starting a mobile recycling business that gave back to students in the special education system, people told me “You are wasting your time; why would you do that if you aren’t keeping the money?” But what matters to me is being able to help make a memory for students that may not have the opportunity otherwise! For me, this wasn’t a waste of time because I would gain joy in my life by helping others. Knowing I made someone smile and happy because I was able to take care of their wants and make them feel appreciated for staying on track on graduating high school. This will be my legacy. See, if I died tomorrow, and no one remembered me, I would have left nothing on this planet, and that would make me ashamed. Instead if I died tomorrow people would remember me as Koala, the one who helped clean alleys, parks, beaches, and recycled.

Flash it forward five years, I moved to a new town with my parents, I workout 2-3 times a day, I am an active day trader and investor, graphics designer, motivator, ethical hacker and soon-to-be a Marine, and I’m not even 18 yet! This is one of those too-good-to-be-true stories, and I know it may not apply to you, but at the root of this, it’s the same as your story. We all have our valleys in life and the desire to climb out and reach our peaks, but not a lot of us know how we can get out, which is precisely what I want to talk to you about. You see, we all have this flame burning inside of us — this desire to BECOME more, to SEE more, to HAVE more, to GROW more. That is called your PASSION.

In the beginning, you are not sure if you should try or not, but it is always better to try than to never try and have regrets.

When I was 12 years old, I was bullied for being fat, stupid and living in a broken family. My entire life revolved around the same daily sayings other kids told me. One of them being, I will never be able to make and do anything useful with my life. My mom was always in and out of the picture trying to pay the bills, and my brother never wanted to look out for me because he had his own demons to battle, so I was ultimately on my own with nobody to look up to. This caused me to go into a depression at the time due to the environment I was in. Instead of trying to look towards a brighter future I played video games to try and evade the reality of what my life was, a freaking pile of crap.

And especially remembered by high school students with learning disabilities who would remember me as the one who motivated them to graduate high school because of my promise to take care of their senior package. This is why it is so important to have a strong foundation because it represents who you are! My foundation is helping students with learning disabilities gain opportunities and create motivation to graduate, that is why a portion of every bottle recycled with Koalas Mobile Recycling goes to those students! Without this foundation of giving back, of cleaning the environment my business would have stopped before it ever started. Without a solid foundation, I would have listened to those that told me I was wasting my time! This foundation allows me to help people like you build a cleaner environment, and help students in your community! So ask yourself, do you have a solid foundation that will help your business grow?

Passion is the foundation that will help you climb out of the hole that you’re stuck in right now and help you push forward to where you want to be in life. That sweet spot that many have dreamed about but not many have dared to venture. We all have it, but how you choose to use your passion is up to you, you can either use it to your advantage and open your mind to the possibilities of achieving your desires or you can continue to lock it up inside your head and let the oxygen run out until it becomes smoke and ashes. Society will tell you that it would be in your best interest to put out the flame. But the people who tell you that are the ones who are not the lighthouses of life and should not be followed. It is very well known in psychology that our actions are determined by our “internal-beliefs” A.K.A. our passions and “External-Conflicts,” i.e., our environment and who we surround ourselves with, so don’t surround yourself with people who want to extinguish your flame. Passion is the foundation for success, keep it alive, and it will do some great things for you. Create it, adapt to it, start living it. by Adrian Merlino

Heavenly Bliss in a Himalayan Salt Cave

MORNING D AT E S W I T H BISHOP JAKES

Lying on a comfortable reclining lounge chair and covered with a thin, warm blanket, soft Tibetan-sounding music envelops me with repetitive cadences; salt candles barely illuminate the darkness with an orange glow. I slowly drift off — I am in a Himalayan Salt Cave at Salt of the Earth.

Over

the years I have grown to believe that strengthening our foundation is a daily process. For me, building my foundation within myself starts with Bishop TD Jakes in the morning. I was not always a religious person. Growing up, my family attended church until my parents moved to Michigan to become entrepreneurs. Time was scarce, and priorities were out of order. Although we were a religious family, we were not in the pews on Sunday that often. Everything that we do in life takes a little faith. You go to bed having faith that the sun will shine. You have faith that the train will not crash while you’re traveling. You have faith that a shower will make you feel clean. So, if we have faith and it’s a part of our being, then why are we so quick to lose it? When we are in business, and we pitch ten people, and everyone is saying no, we are so quick to lose faith. When we cold call for our business and feel unsure about how to handle some of the questions we automatically lose a little faith. If I were given a stack of hay and were told if I could find the pin, I would receive one million dollars. In the beginning, I would dive in, be excited and put in my best effort to find this pin. As time goes on and the task seems more tedious than I thought, I start to LOSE MY FAITH. Why do we do that? Here are three tips to KEEPING THE FAITH! Have a clear goal. Knowing where you’re going and what you have to get accomplished will keep your head clear and give you more confidence. How can you have faith if you have no clue what you’re doing? Walk by faith and not by sight. Leap. You’re never going to know if it will work or if you like it until you TRY. It doesn’t work, and you have to go back to the drawing board? GREAT! That’s why we are entrepreneurs! Have a little FAITH. Every morning before you start your day, have a date with your inner self, your faith and someone or something that will uplift you or your spirit before you walk out into this big cruel world. I start my morning with motivational videos from Bishop T.D Jakes. His message speaks straight to my soul and right into my heart. His positive words stay with me throughout the day. When I’m feeling a little down during the day, I take myself back to my date with Bishop Jakes in the morning, and it melts all the worries away because his message restores my faith and I’m able to take a deep breath and continue. So, my friends, you don’t have to see the whole staircase, but you do have to take the first step. Remember to be clear about your goals, so you know what your target is. The more clear your goals are, the more confidence you’ll have with your action steps. Walk by faith and stop doubting yourself; even if you fail, at least you tried and had faith in yourself. And lastly, fill your heart, soul, and mind with positive words whether it be the word of God or a word of encouragement. Having positive words that you could reflect on will help you bounce back from your negative thoughts faster. Have a little faith in yourself and leap. Don’t take life too seriously; no one is going to get out alive anyway!

But I don’t want to fall asleep; I don’t want to miss a minute experiencing the healing effects of imperceptible micron-sized Himalayan salt particles drizzling down on me. I hardly notice the half dozen people sharing this cave with me; everyone is in their world. I look at myriad tiny lights twinkling on the uneven ceiling that looks like sand dunes. Forty-five minutes seems like a long time to do nothing at all, no phone calls, messages, news, not compiling a to-do list in my mind, not thinking about a zillion deadlines. Slowly my mind lets go of mundane concerns, and it is only me and the cave — a wave of tranquility washes over me. HISTORY According to the Salt Therapy Association, dry salt therapy (halotherapy — halos is Greek for salt) dates back to the salt mines and caves in Europe and Russia. It was discovered that salt miners rarely had any respiratory issues and had great looking skin. The anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory properties of halotherapy are beneficial for respiratory ailments, such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis and more. They also provide relief for skin conditions: acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. CONCLUSION I can attest to my positive results: just getting over a bad cold, I still had a ‘stuffy nose.’ At the end of the session, my nasal passages were clear and remained that way. My face felt smooth and soft — the only skin exposed to the halotherapy. Maybe next time I should wear shorts and a T-shirt and do without the blanket. Just as impressive as the physical benefits are the emotional ones. The forty-five minutes went by fast; at the same time, it felt as if I had been far away for a long time. The soothing and tranquil surroundings had a profoundly relaxing and invigorating effect. This Himalayan Salt Cave with its rustic stone walls, calming music, soft lights, and tons of salt — 7,000 lbs salt crystals on the floor, crunching under my sockcovered feet when I walked in, and 6,000 lbs on the ceiling —is going to be my body- and soul-rejuvenating refuge from now on. by Renate Strub Renatestrub.com

THE FOUNDATION

OF A WORLD THAT WORKS

Worlds Only Fat Burning Coffee!

If you know me, you know that “foundation” is one of my all-time favorite vocabulary words. If I could take one word to a deserted island, I would choose “foundation,” and we would build our home together in blissful matrimony! My love affair with this brilliant term is longstanding, and it is my “go-to” in any disagreement with my humble boyfriend and coworkers. Recently though, the word has taken on an entirely new meaning to me. Today, the foundation is a word that will change the world. A few years back, my life took a sharp left turn. I hated my job. I hated my relationship. But most devastatingly, I was starting to hate humanity. Somewhere between birth and 23, I learned that the world was not made of sparkles and glitter the way my advanced magnet school education led me to believe. I started noticing the injustice that existed all around me. Why was it that in the richest age of man, we could not feed the poor? Why was it that in the world of reality TV and 17-year-old Instagram millionaires, 1.1 billion people had no access to clean water? Why in the world of kids who say “but mom, I don’t want to go to school!”, did 1.44 billion humans not have access to the education they longed for and deserved? These questions ran my life until I decided to become a part of the foundation. You see, I spent YEARS hoping for change and doing nothing about it. I watched the news, complained, read articles, complained, and went to sleep. Wake-up. Rinse. Repeat. I took no responsibility for solving the problem, and in reality, I was probably making it worse. What kind of foundation was I asking for if I was the one taking a sledgehammer to it every single day? That’s when it hit me - I had to BE the foundation for the world I wanted to live in. I had to put my favorite term to good use. Today, I am one of 10 co-founders of a non-profit community committed to building an army of movers and doers. At ThroughYOU, we believe that life is not something to sit back and observe, but something we have to build from the ground up. We are a movement – a community of people who refuse the status quo both in our own lives and in the lives of the 7.5 billion people around the globe. We will change the world one school, water well, and medical facility at a time, all while creating leaders out of ourselves and every individual we encounter. Change can ONLY happen ThroughYOU, so we might as well start today. How do I know this is possible, you ask? Because it all started with a straightforward decision. My name is Amanda, and I am finally a part of the solution. Consider me a part of the foundation, and let’s build a beautiful world – together.

INFLUENCER SPOTLIGHT ALEXANDER RYKER

Meet Alex Ryker, the coach that has designed a program that is meant

to bring you to the next level. Growing up, Alex was surrounded by a negative environment; those around him simply didn’t believe that change was possible. The nine to five, middle class, rinse and repeat lifestyle left those around him unsatisfied and he knew that wasn’t going to be him. He knew that the advice that he was getting, although it came from a good place, only led to an unhappy lifestyle. When Alex was still in college, he got his first taste of the entrepreneurship lifestyle, when his professor introduced him to the world of multilevel marketing. Once Alex saws the possibilities, he dove all in and ended up dropping out of college! He spent hours every day for eighteen months pouring into this business but often found himself getting minimal results. While he says most people would reevaluate after a few months, he continued to grind for eighteen months before he realized something had to change. This was when he learned a valuable lesson in business, no matter how much you like your product, if it isn’t serving your market, then you aren’t in business. If no one wants to buy your product or service, then you need to find something different. Although he never made it big in the multilevel marketing world, he is happy that it led him here today. Now Alex runs a community of over four thousand coaches and entrepreneurs, teaching them how to run local events and effectively reach their audience through organic growth hacking and direct reach out. This shift was made when Alex found himself a mentor outside of the multilevel marketing company he was working with. A straightforward question would change his entire course… “are you happy?” When Alex responded no to this question, he knew something needed to change, so he went out the next day and quit the company. But Alex doesn’t just teach people how to live an effective and fulfilling life; he walks the talk! This is because the quote Alex lives his life by is “lead by example.” Instead of giving knowledge that was picked up in books, or theory, Alex teaches techniques that he has first implemented. Once Alex has created something new in his life, he then can show his community how to create the same impact in their lives. By listening to his mentor, Alex found so much more success in business, and in life, and now he is sharing that with those around him! This is the exact reason Alex always recommends people to get a coach or mentor, and actually listen! When you follow someone’s instructions that IS MAKING MONEY, then you will most likely make money too. But the key is picking someone that is where you want to go or has been where you want to go. Make sure that you aren’t listening to everyone, but instead, you are listening to that one person that is right for you. Through listening to his mentor, and hustling as hard as he could, Alex went from moving into a new market, with no credibility, and very little confidence, to having thirteen clients in one month. This is because Alex listened to his mentor, and had the belief, and need to accomplish the goal he has set for twelve clients in thirty days. So what is it that you are missing out on by not having a coach or mentor in your life? Don’t get left behind! To learn more about Alex Ryker and his events reach out to. www.innercirclecoaches.com

6 Tips to Find

YOUR Life -Work Balance Foundations for a Happy and Healthy Life Face it, most of us have to work for a living. We need to pay for the lives we lead outside work... Our mortgage, car payment, utilities, child care, health care, groceries, entertainment, travel… you name it; we pay for it. So how do we find our best life when we spend our days running from caring for family needs to pleasing the boss. 1. Put yourself first. Yes, I said it. The flight attendants are right. Put on your oxygen first. If you don’t take care of yourself first, you really won’t be able to be the best for your children, your spouse, your job or your community. 2. Live on less than you make. This provides freedom for your best life. If you genuinely “pay yourself first” – whether 5 %, 10% or 28% - whatever you can put away now will use compounding interest to make it worth dramatically later. Did you know if you put away just $5K each year for ten years in your ROTH IRA before you turn 30, it can be worth $1M by the time you turn 65? If you’re already past 30, don’t fret, still put away as much as you can. If you think you can’t achieve this goal, get help with your budget – trim costs when you can, ask for advice from friends you see doing well and NEVER assume someone is living a great life – they could be drowning in debt. If we never discuss it, we’ll never learn. Let’s take the mystique away and be honest with each other – and ourselves. 3. Stay active. Plenty of studies show the connection between the body and brain health. The more active you can be, and the more healthily you eat, the better the chances you’ll have the energy to accomplish all of your other goals. 4. Stay curious. No matter how busy you are, try to take the time to find something that interests you and ask another question. Two for one? Engage your child to teach you something she’s just working out herself. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll learn as you look at her homework. Do you know why the sky is blue? Did you know that there were only four kingdoms in biology initially, and now there are seven? Do you remember common prayers? Learn something daily unrelated to work. 5. Set boundaries with work. Do what you are meant to do but don’t let your boss or your job consume your life. Who amongst us would say on our deathbed, “I wish I’d spent more time at work?” Create and complete the most fulfilling possible job within the time allotted. 6. Have faith. Prayer, meditation and reflection bring mindfulness that makes everything better. Soothing your soul creates inner peace to permeate your day. Even better, do it as a family. You’ll be glad you did. At 5:1 life conquers work. It may be the best foundation for your life. by Gail L Clifford, MD ABLETravelPhoto.com

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE MONTH

CASEY NICOLE FOX

When you think of foundation, what do you think

of? It’s easy to think of all the groundwork that is laid down before you start to build. Casey Nicole Fox has built a solid foundation, on which she has been able to create massive success. Sometimes as entrepreneurs, we believe that if we were dealt a different hand; if we just had different circumstances, we would have already created success. This simply isn’t true, how your foundation was built does not mean you can not rebuild. It isn’t about the hand you’re dealt, it’s about knowing how to play the game. Growing up, Casey was emotionally, sexually, and physically abused by more people than she can remember. The people in her life that were supposed to protect her brought harm into her life and then abandoned her. This left Casey with a foundation that told her that she would never be enough. She had limiting self-beliefs, a self-harm addiction, and limited knowledge on what it would take to be an adult in the world around her. However, Casey did not allow this foundation to be one that she would build her life upon. Instead, Casey dug up all of the old limiting beliefs and filled in the cracks in her foundation. She decided that she was sick and tired of being sick and tired. CASEY’S OLD FOUNDATION: The first time Casey tried to kill herself that she remembers she was 10 years old. Before that, at the age of 6, Casey was placed in a mental institution after trying to jump out a second-floor window and was later placed in foster care after being released from the mental institution. When she attempted to take her life at the age of 10, she realized that with the right amount of physical pain, she could mask her emotional pain. This is where her self harming addiction was born and would be her coping mechanism for the next 10 years of her life. The abuse from Casey’s childhood manifested in her young adult life in the form of anger issues, control issues, choosing abusive relationships, and living in a constant state of desperation. She had trust issues and couldn’t let anyone get close enough to hurt her the way she had been hurt in the past, so she thought she had to do everything herself and rely on no one. It wasn’t until Casey changed who she surrounded herself with that she began to see the areas of her life that she needed to work on. CASEY’S NEW FOUNDATION: At the age of 19, Casey met her to-be business partners, Stephen and Angela Dela Cruz. Casey saw that they had immense amounts of money even though they lived their lives with freedom, and she wanted that. Casey began to cut off the old relationships in her life that kept her in the same mindsets and begin to surround herself with the people and the tools that could shape the kind of mindset that would bring her success. She read books, listened to podcasts, started going to seminars and networking events, and took on greater and greater responsibilities with her business partners. Casey took the advice of her mentors and began to live by the motto, ‘Go big or go home.’ Everything she did she did with her whole heart and focused on

excellence in everything she did. As she faced her demons, she began to get stronger and become more successful. Today she runs 10 plus corporations that revenue 7 figures each, has 4 of her own businesses, founded and runs San Diego’s ONLY printed entrepreneur magazine: Life By Design Magazine, and co-founded San Diego’s #1 Business Coaching and Mastermind Program: Success Circle. Casey has also written 5 books, been featured in 5 additional books, has a podcast and a youtube channel, and is now a certified NLP life coach. Through the process of building a new foundation, she was able to build upon fundamentals that would

“Go Big or Go Home” help her for the rest of her entire life. Having worked through so many different levels in her own life, Casey knows precisely what it takes to break through your old foundation and build a new one to help you achieve your wildest dreams! As you begin your journey of making a solid foundation to build upon, Casey wants to help you! These are the three things that Casey starts with every new client in her life coaching program. KNOW HOW HIGH YOU WANT TO BUILD: If you’ve been to downtown San Diego lately, you will see many buildings in the process of being built. Some are still digging up the ground to lay the foundation, others are putting the final touches on their 35th floors. When a skyscraper is being built, first the blueprints are drawn up. Here in California, we have stringent laws about how a foundation is built because of earthquakes.

cycles; we have to dig them all up and replace them with good things that will help us along that way. Think about it like this, you hired a contractor to build the foundation of your new house, and they knew there was a weak point, but they lied to you, covered it up, and worked around it. If something happened and 3 years into living in your house that weak point becomes a crack in the foundation that rips your home in two and causes thousands in damage, wouldn’t you be mad? If the answer is yes, then why are you treating a possession better than yourself? Your success is directly connected to how strong your foundation is, so isn’t it time to build a core that can not be shaken? Take the time to find someone you can trust, whether it be a friend or a professional, and begin your journey of vulnerability. FIND SOMEONE THAT CAN LEAD YOU: Casey often says if she hadn’t found Stephen and Angela, she would have ended up dead in a ditch somewhere. You see this is because she didn’t know what she didn’t know. Finding Stephen helped open her eyes to the journey! As Casey was building her new foundation, it would take constant adjustments and small tweaks. This is when having someone that can look from the outside and see where you need to make adjustments helps. Having a coach and mentor is what saved Casey’s life, and is what helped her create the foundation that she has today. It is possible to go through the journey alone, but if you had a magic pill that would speed your journey up and gave you a blueprint to success, wouldn’t you take it? This is where Casey began her foundation and how she went from working four jobs to owning four businesses.

The first step before you ever even begin to build is creating the blueprint; the vision and the business plan. Next, you need to be prepared for the worstcase scenario, which is why having a blueprint before you dig is so essential. Earthquakes are our life events that can shake us to our core. When we design precisely how high we want to go, we will know just how strong our foundation needs to be.

You see, it wasn’t about the cards Casey was dealt in life. It was about how she played the game. She used the tools she was given to win at life instead of settling for what she was dealt. She realized that “Practice makes confidence.” The more that she worked on herself and used the tools she had, the easier it got to make the right decisions that lead her towards success.

As entrepreneurs, the larger our dreams, the more reliable our foundation will need to be. There will be events in our lives that without a solid foundation, could tear down the success we have built thus far. But this doesn’t have to your story! You can continually strengthen your foundation, and once you know how high you want to go, you can build a foundation that will support you long into the success of your business.

Wherever you are in the journey of building your foundation, these three keys will help you unlock the next level. The cards you were dealt no longer have to dictate whether you win or lose. Although life is all a risk, it is not poker. You can go out, buy a deck of cards and pick any hand you want. All it takes is a choice to view your circumstances as powerless over you, and instead to advocate your success. No matter what happens in your life, if you have a solid foundation, you will be ready for the worst of storms.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO DIG: So often as people we bury the deepest parts of us, the shame we have felt and the disappointments we feel. But hiding those feelings does not mean they go away. Vulnerability is the way you can begin to dig up those feelings and settle them once and for all. Vulnerability is one of the most critical steps in building your foundation. The taller the building, the deeper the foundation has to go. This means that if you want to become massively successful, you have to put in the work to deal with all of the issues rooted at your core. The limiting beliefs, negative self talk, self-destructive

Jessika Jake, this one of a kind overall wellness teacher has an amazing

vibe of positivity and purpose in her life. It took a long winding road for Jesika to get where she is today, but she wasn’t always an entrepreneur. Before Jessika found her calling in the health and wellness field with her daughter Jade, she worked as a teacher, website designer, project manager, and so much more. But what really changed was when Jessika saw a need and fixed it. Just like you, Jessika didn’t find this amazing thing that would make her millions. What she found was a problem, then she saw a solution. When Jessika’s daughter Jade was in a study abroad, Jessika had Jade came out with a product. Once they found their tribe in the health and wellness world, neither of them wanted to leave. Jessika is even brought to tears hearing the stories of their product, helping others. She has even heard stories of their product being used for new and even more impactful ways. Through Jessika’s journey, it may sound like she worked in very different areas, but because she has worked in each of these areas she is able to bring all forms of wellness education to her clients. This goes down to the level of understanding the different states your body is in and how they affect everything from your vision and hearing to what emotions you have access to at that moment. Having such a diverse background allows Jessika to combine the beauty and tech into her workbooks while having the humor that helps everyone to connect with the information. Jessika helps people understand how they are wired and inspired and takes that into finding their passions and purpose. Through assisting people to recognize the data they have, group that data into information, and translate that information to knowledge, then wisdom. Finding those connections between now only tech and science, but how to connect and provide value with what is going on in your day today. This also is present in how she brings a playful attitude in your everyday life, experimenting in all the aspects of your life to help you find success in the eight areas of wellness. Bringing this fun aspect to science and wellness has helped Jessika find herself while she is helping others. When she looks more at being what her clients need at that time, instead of adhering to the “rules” and not being able to provide the fullest value she can. But the one piece of advice Jessika has to those starting out is to ask yourself one question. Are you playing to win, or are you playing not to lose? This question has helped Jessika stop wasting so much mental energy by helping her realize where she is spending her time, and if she is compromising in life. So continue to ask yourself everyday, Are you playing to win, or are you playing not to lose? www.emanantwellness.com Interviewed By: Jennifer Meim Written By: Kristen Crooks

Crick, Crack, Crock How Sturdy is your Foundation?

Life has many deadlines... including life itself. There are many pressures too, “Keep up with the Joneses” or should I say, “Keep up with the Kardashians?” These pressures can sometimes put us in a position to tempt us to speed up the process. The question I have to ask though is, “How sturdy is your foundation?” After all of the quick building... faking it until you make it... Instagram filters... and bought followers... can you depend on something substantial to stand on? Below I share three “Crick,” “Crack,” “Crocks” of an unsteady foundation inside of your business and also inside of your life.

Having a sturdy foundation is something that will hold up a building for years and possibly hundreds of years to come. Something that will protect, hold steady, and firm during the storms, hurricanes, floods, hail, wind, etc. The more successful you become in business, the more of a target you become to potential storms. The higher you build..., the more you MUST depend on having a solid foundation. You do not want to make something, investing YOUR time, money, energy, allocating resources and reputation... to have it collapse in front of everyone. Start right by knowing your values and morals. Commit to always keeping them through the process to success if you want to have the longevity throughout the time that will hold.

Commit to yourself and your vision.... so you don’t become the final crock in a mess.

BUILD A SOLID BUSINESS FOUNDATION When starting a small business, you (as a new business owner) have to base it on a solid foundation and remember to set aside time for you. If you aren’t careful setting up and sticking to a work schedule, it can easily take up a 24 hour day. When run properly, having your own business can be exciting and become very lucrative if you stay on track with your goals, dividing your time between business and “me time.”

Reading the

Genius Foundation for Success

Gerald Eldred “Coach G”

”LEADERS ARE READERS” If you read one book per month, that will put you into top 1% of income earners, but if you read one book a week (52 a year), this will make you one of the most educated, smartest, most capable and highest paid person in your field. I had a goal to read one book a month last year after hearing that statement and when the year ended, I ended up reading 42 books. Understand that this was from someone who was diagnosed with a learning disability and hated reading. So if I can do it, anyone can. Reading is recommended by some of the most successful people in the world. Russell Brunson reads a book a week and suggests that if you want massive success, you do the same. Bill Gates, Oprah, Warren Buffett are just a few of the most successful and wealthiest people in the world, and they read every day. If you want to be successful and grow your Genius foundation, then you should follow what successful people do. READ EVERY DAY! “If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books” The first book that laid my genius foundation and changed my life was “Unlimited Power” by Anthony Robbins. This book opened my mind to “NLP” Neuro-Linguistic – Programming. How language, both verbal and nonverbal, affect our nervous system. One of the reasons reading is so essential is because it fills your foundation with dreams, goals, aspirations, and knowledge to go, have, or become whatever you desire. You must believe it to achieve it. When I was labeled dumb, I allowed myself to believe I couldn’t read, that there was no point for me to try. If I had stayed in that thought process, Tony Robbins would have never changed my life; Napoleon Hill wouldn’t have shown me the power of the mind, Robert Kiyosaki would have never shown me the four quadrants. Even though every person who labeled me dumb, slow, BY DESIGN JUNE 2019 22 LIFE LBDMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019

It’s about breaking down labels to bring out your own “Genius Within”. stupid would have told me I couldn’t read, I had to push through the shame and pain. When you read, you make smarter decisions about yourself and those around you. A solid foundation for your small business requires a delineation between business and “me time,” utilizing a game plan, owner/ operator compensation, rating your business operation and having a backup plan. Delineating time between your business and that spent decompressing with family, friends or accomplishing other goals, requires at least three things. 1) Having an office designated for work only. 2) Keeping a strict schedule, breaking for lunch during a workday and having a clear cut-off time to spend with your loved ones after working hours. 3) Maintaining a separation between your business and personal bank accounts. Have a game plan so that you aren’t swallowed up with the daily operations of the business, such as writing checks and customer service. Refer to your game plan: your business objectives, goals and end points. If you stick to the plan, getting lost in the mundane and everyday affairs won’t sideline your business. As a business owner, you have to compensate for yourself. Define the costs of the services you provide and hit the monetary targets that you want to reach. Also, give yourself bonuses when you overachieve your goals and don’t forget to set money aside in a long term savings account. Rate your performance by getting your clients involved in how you are doing. Is your performance up to par with your business objectives? Have you exceeded your goals? Consult with your clients, have a suggestion box with a rating scale from 1 to 10, or if applicable check your online business review. Finally, have a backup plan. Know how much it costs to get through a month on up to six months. Set aside enough money in a business savings account to get you through the lean times. It will make all the difference between staying in business or having to close your doors. by Sharon J Geyer www.fairlyfast.us

How to Create a Foundation for

Business Success for the Year

How to Create a Foundation for Business Success for the Year Do you ever get to the end of a month, a quarter, a year... and you’ve made money, but you’re ultimately going in a circle? I know what it’s like. That’s why it’s so important to create a foundation for the year by conducting an annual planning process. I’ve been a part of lots of different high-potential teams, but they often failed to get beyond one-off projects because there is no long term plan. Further, a lack of meetings leaves team members entirely out of sync with each other and fails to create a motivating context for their work. Conferences are a topic for another day, but here’s the exact process I walk my clients through for annual planning: Five Steps to Annual Planning: First, create a non-financial measurement of success for your business. Is it several clients serviced? Square feet of windows washed? Members in your Facebook group? What represents success for your business? Second, pick an achievable financial goal. Achievable financial goals for the year will serve to create momentum to the end of the year. Specify whether it’s revenue or profit. Third, brainstorm all of the possible projects that would help get you there. Is it a promotional campaign? What medium? Do you need to expand or contract services? Create better customer onboarding? Fourth, pick just four of those goals to tackle for each of the four quarters of the year.* Fifth, break it down into 30-day segments.

Lastly, load it directly into your project management system and create specific descriptions for each task such that any team member can pick it up. Caveats to Planning:

You may realize that some projects you initially picked for 90-day projects may be accomplished in 30 days and that’s fine. Meetings should allow for review, the addition of, and cancellation of projects. *Now, an important distinction to make here is the difference between your internal and external delivery teams. Let’s say you’re a landscaping business. People who perform landscaping for your clients are part of your external delivery team. People who work ON your business are part of your internal delivery team. If you don’t have an internal delivery team, create a job description for what kinds of things you need to be done once the projects are selected. The better your internal delivery team, the faster you can grow. Had I known this process coming into many of the projects I was invited into early on, it would have completely changed the direction of things. Use it. Stick to the plan. Prosper!

If you ever wonder why your relationships are not working, your career is not working, or why your performance in sports or work is not working, the first place to look is at your integrity. Too often in life, we wonder why people don’t call us back. We think, why are my clients not buying my products or services? Why isn’t my girlfriend happy? Why don’t my employees “respect” me? Why don’t people “trust” me? The answer to all those questions is that you are not a man or woman of your word, and they all know it. I want you to have that too! I request you take on living in a world of 100% integrity and watch your life magically transform :)

All of these are important areas of my life, and they are all necessary for me to feel contentment and fulfillment, but I came to the conclusion that they are not my foundation. After sitting in retrospection for a while, I realized that the true foundation of my life is my relationship with my Higher Self. I can call it God, I can call it my true self, I can call it spirit or my soul. To me, all of these terms comprise of the same thing. It is that inner acceptance, the peace and the trust I experience, when I allow myself to be truly OK with who I am, my life choices, my life circumstances. It is that self-love I can generate, even when the worst of the events happen in my life. It is that trust in God, the surrender, the compass that is leading my life. I am that I am… Without it, I am nothing. I can be experiencing great highs in business, but it will never be enough. I could be with an amazing man, that is crazy in love with me, yet I will still feel anxious and not able to receive his love. I can have hundreds of friends and yet feel lonely inside. There is absolutely NOTHING, that can substitute my relationship with my source. Without it, I am forever searching, forever broken and forever needing to be fixed. With it, when I know for certain who I am - I am complete. Even without the wealth, without a romantic relationship, with extra weight, etc. My relationship with my source is my foundation. It is from it every other area of my life stems and works. “I am that I am” means I am fully here, I am fully complete, I am fully perfect, and I am fully now. BEDROCK Foundation: the beginning of anything and everything.

Are you

It’s as simple as that; you cannot create anything without some beginning. A thought, that first brick, the basis of a decision that led you one step closer to a goal or destination. Everything you have done up to right now, this very moment, is your foundation to who and what you are today.

Tired of trying to be healthy but you are eating food that tastes like cardboard? Of course you are!!!

One of my favorite stories that illustrate what a foundation truly is comes from a mentor of mine that said, “If I wanted to teach you how to do algebra, could I do it if you didn’t know what numbers were? Think about it, given that you’re reading this, I am guessing you’ve passed the first grade, so you know what numbers are, but if you didn’t, I’d have to teach you what a 0 was, I’d have to show you 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 fingers. Then after you learned what numbers were, I would have to teach you about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If you’ll recall, it took you 7-8 years to get to the point where you could even begin to do algebra. I am hoping if you’ve read this far, you did have a chance to experience algebra. My point is, some things take time and businesses are no different. Starbucks didn’t become Starbucks overnight. They have been in business since then, and it wasn’t until the 1990s when they opened their first overseas store. Now in 2019, they have over 23,000 stores worldwide and are on practicality ever corner. Me, I am at my beginning. I have been building and creating businesses for eight years now. Last year we finished laying the foundation that will help support our products in the future. Even though it has been a long road, we know that every day we are one day closer than we were yesterday. The knowledge and experiences we incur today, lead us to where we’ll be tomorrow. Everything we do begins somewhere. A gardener’s foundation would start with how well he prepared the soil to plant the seed. All decisions of the court are made based upon the grounds of previous decisions. There are just so many examples if you break them down. In a family unit, the relationship between the mother and the father is the foundation for that family, and their core values form and mold the offspring to help build the next generation.

What can I tell you about the foundation that you’ve never heard before? Maybe not much, but I can tell you about the greatest foundation I know. Now, I am no expert on the Bible, but I do know that in the Bible it tells you to build your foundation on solid rock, and all great builders know that bedrock is the most solid of all. Nothing is stronger than bedrock. Bedrock, the best definition of a foundation I know. Just know that you have to start at the bottom to build your way to the top! by David Blackford

Until recently, memory has been compared to a computer storage device. Now the brain is looked at as an information-processing system that takes information and processes through three discrete stages: encoding, storage, and retrieval. Atkinson and Shiffrin suggest that information goes through two stages: short-term memory, and long-term memory. Today, researchers have further defined this paradigm with findings from cognitive neuroscience. This presents memory as a collection of systems working interdependently. There is no one portion of the brain solely responsible for all memory, although there are certain regions related to specific memory subsystems. So, if you want to improve not just your memory, but your mind I have put together some very simple ways to upgrade your firmware to accommodate the new software. Do Things Different: Like any muscle, the brain works in the same way. The more you exercise it the stronger it will get. Sensory and novelty stimulation form the foundations for brain exercise. Changing a routine in a way that is challenging means new brain pathways not previously used are put in use. For example, brushing your shoes with the non-dominant hand activates the less utilized connections on the brains non-dominant side. Or getting dressed. Try to put your pants on in reverse order. For example, if you are a southpaw you may put your left leg in your pants first then right. Try switching it up to grow new pathways. Aerobicize Your Brain: By Aerobicizing your brain, you will increase your mental agility. If you like board games, consider Risk. If you are into PC/Console gaming, choose a game that will force you to think out strategies to accomplish a task. Similarly, you can learn a new subject. If you are musically challenged like I am, try learning an instrument. Lastly, if you have trouble balancing your checkbook you may want to try learning differential calculus. Avoid Distractions: In addition to exercising your brain, there are some basic things you can do to enhance your ability to retain and retrieve information. First, pay attention. Remember that multitasking just means that you are doing several things distracted. While I am writing this article, I am also in a meeting. I ask myself, am I really understanding and retaining what is being discussed. The answer is no! To put a point on this concept, you can only encode something into your brain if you pay close attention to it. The processing of a piece of information via the hippocampus and then into the relevant memory center requires eight seconds and therefore you should avoid multitasking if concentration is to be achieved. One way I learn is to take notes then review them. You may find it better to record ideas with video or audio. Point being is to find some way that works for you. Stop Memorizing: Another way to exercise your brain and increase retention is by understanding and interpreting materials that are complex. This requires understanding basic ideas instead of memorizing. When I want to learn a new concept, procedure or skill I first look at the why. Ask yourself why you want to learn this. If you are just doing it because you are doing it, then you are not truly motivated to learn the concept, procedure or skill. For this exercise to succeed there needs to be some value added to you. Remember that you are the architect of your mind. If you want to change, there is nothing to stop you from rewriting your software. Don’t be fooled by the promise of quick fixes or some miracle pill being touted by an infomercial. Rather think about this as a life change. A life change that you choose, not one that is forced upon you. by Gary Stiefel Vienna www.gvonline.org

How Solid Is Your Business? Does a foundation play a part in success? It does. From birth, we start building the foundation of our life. From learning to walk, talk, and getting along with other people. A strong foundation is a must in order to be successful in life and business. To be a successful person, we learn how to deal with competition, loss, failure, rejection, and defeat. All of which makes you a stronger person with the ability to handle adversity. Foundation is so essential as a business owner for you to succeed. What we build is not only crucial to the business as a whole but the people, vendors, and customers we employ and do business with. The Foundation is built on much more than a desire and a financial ability, To be a successful business owner, you will need to know what your expenses are and how they actually breakdown. That doesn’t mean knowing how much the rent is if you have a storefront. It means knowing what the rent is by the square footage and understanding the cost of operating it, i.e. (equipment, payroll, maintenance, etc.) Entrepreneurs need to have a foundation in accounting or business math, handling several different personalities whether it is associates, employees or customers.

Thought Leaders Zone For every incident and situation you’ve lived through, you react and respond a certain way. You have opinions and beliefs. You take a stand for and against certain things.

FINDING YOUR WHY WHAT’S YOUR WHY? It’s a question you’ve probably heard more than once. From your life purpose, business purpose, or even when you’re trying to figure out your brand, it’s a question that, at least for the last decade has become very common, and one that many experts will use as the foundation of their work. Almost a decade ago, a barely known at the time man named Simon Sinek gave a TEDx talk. Today, at over ten million views, How Great Leaders Inspire Action continues to inspire and challenge leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries around the world.

for others – without exception, these extraordinary people, when asked how they would feel if they weren’t performing, advocating, or working on their cause, would tell you they felt unfulfilled. WHY Isn’t Your Purpose In 2011, as I watched my house burn down after being struck by lightning, I started to ask myself, “Why?!? Why me?” In the aftermath, why turned into what now? I started to question everything.

In my early work, I wrote about understanding your WHY to have the clarity necessary to move people into action. Speakers and leaders who have a strong WHY become successful. There is no question about that.

In dealing with the reality that I lost everything physical I owned to that point, I started to wonder what the purpose of life was. Why work to get nice things? What’s the point of building anything when it can all be taken away?

Understanding your WHY is foundational to creating success and achieving fulfillment in business, relationships, and life. But, how do you find your WHY?

In an instant, life can change. In those moments, it takes unwavering faith and unconditional support. Your purpose will be put into question, and if your why is attached to your purpose, your foundation will be destabilized.

WHY Isn’t Outside Of You

WHY Is Who You Are

There are a lot of people who will tell you that their why is their family, their kids, or maybe an important cause they believe in. Let’s call these external whys.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing performers, actors, and singers. For years, I’ve researched and been on a quest to understand the X-Factor of great performers and performances and to be able to teach others how to develop and deliver standing ovation worthy moments.

External whys can be powerful motivators, and for some, they may be enough to create a sense of fulfillment for some time. In fact, in some cases, having an external why can help you to discover your deeper why. Having worked with thousands of performers, presenters, speakers and leaders across multiple industries over the last 27 years, I’ve observed that people with strong external whys are driven, passionate, and quite successful. They also tend to be unfulfilled unless they are actively doing their external why. Performers who believed their why was to entertain, activists and advocates of meaningful causes, ambassadors for change and improving the world

28 LIFE BY DESIGN JUNE 2019

The research extended across industries and has been going on for many years. What I discovered was, without exception, the most successful artists, speakers, leaders, and visionaries, in any industry, all possess one common quality: the ability to be themselves, and to show up as themselves, unapologetically. To do that, it’s not just a matter of confidence. It understands who you are and why you are who you are. For your entire life, you’ve left clues...breadcrumbs.

These breadcrumbs expose who you are, and who you’ve always been. As I look back on my work, it’s clear that those individuals I worked with to discover and develop who they have created the most impact, in every way. Now, being unapologetic isn’t just about confidence. It goes way deeper. It’s truly understanding who you are, connecting that to what you believe, and being on-purpose and intentional with sharing that with the world! So, if you want to start with why, and create a positive impact on others, whether it be through speaking, leading, or a business idea, what you need to do is a deep-dive discovery on who you are. You don’t have to take my word for it either. After the viral TEDx talk, Simon Sinek wrote the book, “Start With Why” which quickly became (and remains) a best-seller! What most people don’t know is that the book left many people confused. So, Sinek wrote a follow-up book, “Find Your Why” which gives a more practical approach to practically apply the great thought leadership he originally shared with the world. In the book, he shares: You can find your why by looking back at the events and incidents from your past that had an impact on you. Knowing how you work, how you respond and react, and what you believe will allow you to live out your why–powerfully. Once you know your why share it as often as you can! You Are Ready Now Everything you’re looking for is already within your reach. There is nowhere to look except back at your history, the breadcrumbs of your life, to discover and develop your why. Then, you’ll be armed with an unstoppable tool to deliver the message, mission, and vision you have for others in an impactful way. Your WHY is waiting to be discovered. Start with WHO you are.

Create a Business as Strong as You Are

3 STEPS TO ATTRACT

RAVING FAN CLIENTS

Sylvia Chavez

How

would your life be if you wouldn’t have to look for clients? If you could become so viral that your waiting list is filled for the next 6 months or a year with people ready to throw their credit card at you? You have a flourishing, stable business and your clients are your biggest raving fans…they love you so much that just out of their referrals you could maintain that growth. You would love that to happen for real, wouldn’t you? Let me tell you a secret: It is possible, it is already happening to someone in your field...it is possible for you too. All you need is to follow these 3 simple steps: 1. DESCRIBE THAT IDEAL CLIENT TO THE TEETH, EVERY DETAIL COUNTS. Where does this person live, how do they dress, where do they go shopping, what kind of magazines does she/he reads, what are their values, what is she/he passionate about? Sports? Hobbies? How much does that person make per year? Can she/he pay for your services? What is her/his mindset? Everything you can think of, detail it out. You could even name that person, feel her/him as if they were a friend. Take a moment to do it right now, put the magazine away for 10 minutes and describe that person you would absolutely love to work with. 2. ASK YOURSELF: AM I THE PERSON I WANT TO ATTRACT MY IDEAL CLIENT? Do I have the same values? The person that I described, would they invest in me today? Do not judge yourself, be gentle, it’s all about acknowledging what might be missing in your mindset to get there. What do you say when somebody offers you something? How do you speak about yourself? Are you a giver or a taker? Do you invest in yourself? Make a list of the things you might want to shift in yourself. Who do you surround yourself with? What’s your environment? Take the time to put all that down on paper.

If it hasn’t happened yet…When do you believe is going to happen? Why wait another day feeling something is missing, or telling yourself you are not good enough, or you have bad luck, or…whatever. You will not attract your ideal client until you become their ideal pick. Guaranteed! “Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.”

- Einstein

Find a mentor; a coach. Somebody that can show you what you can’t see. You don’t know what you don’t know, and the worst part is that you don’t know that you don’t know it. Only somebody that has been in your shoes and made it, can tell you exactly what to do next and how to do it. Go out and live your life now! You deserve it! You started your business to help people, to make a change in the world, to affect people’s lives. There is something special about you; you are unique! Go and make it happen! “You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.”

- Henry David Thoreau.

“If we were to look closely at an individual human being, we would immediately notice that it is a unique hologram unto itself; self-contained, selfgenerating, and self-knowledgeable. If we were to remove this being from its planetary context, we would quickly realize that the human form is not unlike a mandala or symbolic poem, for within its form and flow lives comprehensive information about various physical, social, psychological, and evolutionary contexts within which it was created.” Ken Dychtwald Create a business as unique as you are is the tag line for my business consulting arm of the Goddess In Motion Institute I founded. In the article, I wrote last year entitled “Offspring” I shared about birthing your business and shared how the birth of a child and the birth of a business are very similar. In this article, I’m sharing how the foundation of your body is connected to the foundation of your business. If what Ken Dychtwald is saying is right in the statement above; then we all can create a business as unique as we are or as dysfunctional as we are. So then the question is how we can create a strong foundation for our business as entrepreneurs. Here are three steps to lay out a supportive and strong foundation for you to create and build upon. 1. Take a sheet of lined paper and fold it in half and on the left side write what you are great at and on the right side write what you need assistance or areas that you need some more personal growth. This is a natural process when you can look at your self without judgment and rather look at yourself with compassion. Know that you were given gifts and talents but not all the gifts and talents and for that reason, we are here to co-create. 2. Take notice of where you can develop more in the five levels of the human experience which are spiritual, mental, emotional, physical and social. Continue to grow in all five levels; it can only benefit you and your business when you continually refine yourself and grow as a person. Also, remember to find partners or hire others with the gifts and talents that you need immediately to grow your company. 3. Create a body that is strong flexible and able to move, flow and grow. Your business is a reflection of you. (The five levels of your human experience). Notice the way you carry yourself, the way you stand, the way you walk, move and flow. Notice your feet, your legs, your pelvis and root ( chakra) these are your foundation. “Curving back on myself I create again and again.” - Bhagavad Gita You have the ability and awareness to create again and again through selfawareness. Notice your strengths and weakness and begin to improve them in yourself, and you will see your business improve. MOVIE REVIEW 50 First Dates 2004 | PG-13 | Comedy, Drama Henry Roth is a man afraid of commitment up until he meets the beautiful Lucy. They hit it off and Henry think he’s finally found the girl of his dreams, until he discovers she has short-term memory loss and forgets him the next day. Starring: Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider

Relationships are essential in acquiring, growing, and maintaining a business. This movie is one of my top-10 favorite movies of all time. I love watching romantic movies! There’s always something to learn that we can apply in our business as long as we look for it and it wouldn’t matter what genre of movies they are. For sure you’ve heard the phrase “the honeymoon period” an early phase of a new relationship. This principle is also very obvious and real with our business. Just like the honeymoon period, after acquiring our new client, we take care of them from start to finish making sure that they are happy and satisfied with our services. Then, after the transaction is complete, for some, the relationship cools down. So what can we learn from this movie: Here’s to keep our clients wanting us: • Observe - anticipate needs • Be “Top-of-mind” • Creativity in engagements • Consistency in deliveries of promises • Ask questions “Think Different” love this Apple mantra. Having this mindset and the attitude towards everything we do or think will have a compounding effect in our lives and businesses. What’s something different that you will apply in your business to gain or maintain a client? If you’re looking for a cheesy love story that will make you laugh and inspire creativity, this is a great mix of those. Hope you enjoy this movie and watch it over and over again :) … I do! LOL
