Letter From The Editors The Stegela Success Mastery Team The season for being thankful is upon us. I challenge every one of you, to take the stories and words of the entrepreneurs who have given to their community in word form, and use them throughout the whole year. Being thankful, grateful, and giving shouldn’t be things we only think of in the fall of each year. “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” ―Winston S. Churchill Sometimes, we can get caught up in all of the ‘sales’ that go into being an entrepreneur. It can be easy to stray from the fundamental core of WHY we became entrepreneurs, to begin with. We all started because there was a problem that we wanted to solve. Don’t get so caught up in making a living that you forget to make a life. Making a life is all about what we are giving the world, through our words, actions, and everything we do with our lives. We, the staff of LBD Magazine, hope that this edition inspires you to go out of your way and show the world a little more this season and this year to come. Thank you to all of the writers and all of the readers, may this edition inspire and guide you through the final months of the year!

THE MENTOR

STEPHEN DELA CRUZ GIVING THE KEYS TO SUCCESS HOW YOU TREAT ONE DOLLAR IS HOW YOU WILL TREAT ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Growing up I didn’t have millions of dollars, my family wasn’t wealthy by any means but we could give. If I couldn’t give money I knew I could time or effort. This has carried through with me to this day. Now no matter how much money I make I still have that giving spirit. If you say you don’t have enough to give back, then you will always say you don’t have enough to give back. If you have ten dollars left, and you decide to buy a pack of cigarettes instead of using it to try and gain more wealth you will follow this pattern no matter how much money you have. Multiply that ten dollars by ten and say you have one hundred dollars now, most likely you will spend it on small things that don’t bring investments back. As you keep multiplying that ten dollars however you choose to spend the money will just be multiplied as well. So if you take that ten dollars and give some of it back to someone in need, or you take your time to help that person then when you have wealth in abundance you will, in turn, spend it giving back and helping others. Stephen Dela Cruz is a best selling author, speaker, and serial entrepreneur. This month we are focusing on the idea of giv-

ing back, what it means, and how giving actually brings you rewards. Coming from a background in the church and a culture that is known for giving back, I feel as if giving is in my DNA. But giving is a fundamental key to success as well. I don’t mean like once you have millions of dollars you have to give back fo a publicity stunt. But here are three reasons I believe giving back is a key to success, even if you aren’t successful yet. LBDMAGAZINE.COM 4 LIFE BY DESIGN NOVEMBER 2018

ARE YOU LIKE THE DEAD SEA? The dead sea is known to be the saltiest body of water on this planet. It is in fact so salty that nothing in this body of water is alive. So why is there such build-up of salt in this body of water? Well, there is an inflow to the Dead Sea, but there is no outflow. Water comes into the Dead Sea and the salt deposits stay there. This kills everything in the water and everything around the water. So do you want to be like this? Don’t worry I’m not telling you to stop eating salt, I’m more focused on the inflow without outflow. If you have wealth coming in, and nothing going back out you have all this build up inside of you. This is like the salt in the Dead Sea. Once you have an outflow and create apathy where you are giving back to your surrounds it will lift everything around you up. LIFTING THOSE AROUND YOU Have you ever seen a Spartan race? Where at the end they have this massive wall that you have to run up? At the end of that wall do you see people pushing each other off the wall? Absolutely not, they are hanging over the wall grabbing hands to help people up. After everyone has finished the race there are people angry and upset at each other, Generally not, there is an overwhelming sense of community. When you do something and there is a culture that uplifts others around you there is a sense of pride in those around you. This is what giving back can create in your community. If you spend time helping those around you this brings a sense of pride in the community that inspires others. SO let us give back to our communities and start to build massive Success together!

BE A GO-GIVER, NOT A GO-GETTER

FITNESS

IS A

LIFESTYLE BUSINESS Who else can relate to putting their

health and fitness secondary to our business? I know I can, especially over the past five years. But 2018 was my first year that I really took my health and fitness seriously and started my calisthenics training, which eventually helped me lose over 60 pounds in under a year. With all that focus on my fitness level, some may ask, “but what about business? Aren’t you spending too much time working out?” Ladies and gentleman, I actually felt that way at first, but then something organically started happening. As I began to share my progress through social media, I started getting tons of supporters asking me what I was doing to reach such a high performance. Lightbulb! Fitness is a Lifestyle Business!

Jeff Rollon

fitmonkeysd.com

There is a secret way to transcend competition in business. This secret buys in employees, creates raving fans out of your customers, and brings you more success (and happiness) than any sales tactic ever could. The secret is this: Be a Go-Giver.

Jeff Rollon is a serial entrepreneur, author, business coach, and philanthropist. He enjoys helping others while living with a positive attitude and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. His passion is helping budding entrepreneurs get started and profitable within their first year in business.

Being a Go-Giver means having a service mindset. It means looking for how you can give and help everyone in your life. It changes the conversation from “What can you do for me?” to “What can I do for you?” It’s simple but powerful. The concept of the Go-Giver is explained brilliantly in Bob Burg’s fable, “The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea.”

genuinely beyond their professional title. Ideally, I love doing business like that. When I choose to work with someone, I care about a few things. I look for proven results. I look for hunger. Last, I ask myself, “Is this someone I could have a beer with on the weekend outside of business?” Also, don’t you want to work with someone you know has a strong mindset for commitment to his or her goals? I know I do.

During the first year of running my own franchise, I was BAD at leading and customer service. My thoughts were always about my gains and how this situation helps me. It was the hardest year of my life. I went through more employees than anyone else in the country and had many customer issues. It was late nights, early mornings, and a lot of stress. I felt like a failure.

After that first year, I knew I had to change or I wasn’t going to survive. I made one decision that changed that year and my life: I was going to serve my employees and clients, put their needs first, and focus all of my attention on giving to them. End result: I had 0 employee turnover, had more 5-star ratings than any other branch in the country, worked 50% less, made 2.5X more money, and won Executive of the year.

Here are 3 main facets of being a Go-Giver: 1. Give, give, and give without worrying about getting paid more. Give because it feels good to give. You can measure this by how much more you give away in value than you take in payment. 2. Truly care about other people’s concerns. If a customer is disgruntled, listen to understand. Let them voice their concern to you and authentically let them know you care. I once had a disgruntled customer call me up furious about something one of my employees did on the job site. After a little while, she stopped and asked, “Hello, are you still there?” to which I replied, “Oh yes, I am here, I was just listening to you.” Her whole tone changed. The next day she met me at the job site as I was resolving her (justified) concern and thanked me. She told me no servicer has ever made her feel so understood. She wound up giving me a 5-star rating and a glowing letter of recommendation. 3. Be impeccable to your word. If you say you are going to do something, do it. No matter what. Integrity is a lost art in the business world. Being a Go-Giver isn’t a strategy, it’s a way of life. It transcends business and can help you exponentially grow in all areas of life. Plus, it creates a happier world for everyone. by Christian Chasmer losethelimits.com

LIFE BY DESIGN NOVEMBER 2018 2018 8 LBDMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER

This scripture invites us to explore our feelings and motives when we give. When we are in a mindset of abundance, gratitude, and contentment, we are more open to being generous. These feelings build upon one another opening the channel for more positive feelings such as compassion and empathy. When we are in the mindset of scarcity, resentment, and envy, we tend to withhold and hoard. These feelings can build upon one another as well, possibly lead to depression and anxiety. We are wired for community, for bonding. There is a cycle of giving. Our body responds to giving by “holding our head high,” and we actually stand more upright and feel energetic. We are buoyed, filled with hope, and open to possibilities. We feel more receptive, which in turn opens the channel to receive. When we give, we are sharing a piece of ourselves, a “seed” if you will. “Just like you can’t reap a harvest without planting seeds, so you can’t get without giving” (Debasish Mridha). Most people are familiar with yoga as a physical activity, but there is also a philosophy of the yogic lifestyle. There are “eight limbs” of this philosophy. The first limb is the Yamas, which contain the moral code. Some of the limbs also have branches. There are five Yamas. The fifth Yama is Aparigraha or Generosity. This Yama as described by the Chopra Center is focused around cultivating non-

possessiveness or non-grasping. Aparigraha pushes us to spread wealth and abundance to all. In the act of doing so, that which we seek begins to flow more abundantly to us. Studies on generosity and compassion have shown that giving of our time and resources improves our mood and physical health and increases longevity, according to USNews. Giving activates the pleasure center of the brain. This is known as the “givers glow” or “helpers high.” This dopamineusing pleasure circuitry can also be co-opted by some, but not all, psychoactive substances like cocaine, nicotine, heroin, or alcohol, says Psychology Today. Giving can even help reduce the risk and symptoms of depression and daily stress. In reference to the scripture at the beginning, to reap the benefits of giving, we need to search our motives. You may need to start off giving slowly and not jump into a big commitment of time or resources. You can purge your pantry or closet and donate some items to a local food bank, thrift store, or shelter. Try volunteering for a one-day event such as feeding the homeless, cleaning up a local park, or a charitable fundraiser, such as a gala or race. Find what speaks to your heart, what arises your passion. Is it animals, children, or wounded veterans? There are unlimited possibilities. Whatever you do, do it from the heart. You are sure to reap the benefits! by Fran Pritchard YogaFaith.org

GRATITUDE IS ALL

ATTITUDE Jonathan

Anderson-Ingebrigtsen instagram.com/worldbydads

Entrepreneurship is not for those who can’t take a hit or two. Under the extreme excitement, riches, and freehearted life that can come from it, entrepreneurship requires tough work and determination. This is why when you’re deep in the trenches it is so important to show gratitude with intention.

If Jonathan Ingebrigtsen could have any dream it would be that people spend more time making fun and quirky memories while seeing the world around them. Life is too short to wait till tomorrow or Here are a couple of easy ways to show gratitude!! live life on a some-day mentality. He comes from the structured world of corporate HR and company cultural redisgn and made the transition to a life that allowed him to become a Travel Blogger and Real Estate professional serving our Veteran Community while Living Full Time! When he is not traveling around the world or helping his clients find their dream home, he loves parading around the house dancing to music, networking and developing others to help them reach their full potential, all-while munching on sour-gummies of all kinds.

Every year we hit that time of year where we start to recount the things we are grateful for and the importance of being thankful for everything we have. It’s easy to be grateful when things are going your way, when the law of attraction is abundant, or when you receive help from a friend.

Entrepreneurship conversely is nothing close to an easy street. That journey is full of constant uncertainties, highs, and lows that are unprecedented, developing haters (oh yes, it happens) so one would wonder what we are supposed to be grateful for when madness is surrounding us? That really comes down to knowing why being grateful is so important. Multiples studies have found that expressing gratitude increases selfesteem, energy, and determination. People who are grateful and express it have fewer aches, less anxiety, and get better rest which all increases productivity and efficiency; two essential qualities of an entrepreneurial person. Additionally, gratitude allows for higher team efficiency for their efforts being recognized and overall makes someone a better leader!

MAKING A LIST Start off by making a simple list that shows the basics of what you do have in life. A roof over your head, running water, hot water, car, food to eat, a friend to call, amazing events that have taken place in your life. Now imagine life without those things. Already if we have a roof over our head, running water, and food we are more privileged than 99% of the world. Give thanks for the good things in your life, just a few seconds spent doing this will change your perspective on everything.

SAY THANK YOU Start just saying thank you whenever you’re given the opportunity to use those words around you, whether it be near friends or family, or to your waiter for being an attendant or not. These words will usually always bring a smile to those they are delivered to. Ever heard of something called the ripple effect? A smile can go a long way!! THE CHALLENGE I know life would be more comfortable if things just happened, but sometimes it’s important to be grateful for the struggle and the challenge. When we fall, we must get back up and just like in life that holds true for an entrepreneur. It might not always be easy to be grateful for the struggle in our hustle, but when you reflect on everything you have already been through, and you’re still present, that is something to be grateful for. Being patient and grateful is a practice that can have an incredibly positive effect on you and those that surround you. Those direct factors can and will have an impact on your performance and your business. ENTREPRENEUR LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 9

Angela, the co-founder of Stegela, is the wife of Stephen Dela Cruz and she is an extremely influential woman. Angela, an ordained minister, has a passion to inspire women to become confident, courageous, and compassionate entrepreneurs. She pours her energy into building up people around the world, she supports many non-profits that help 3rd world countries, like India, to become prosperous. She is a powerful public speaker. BY DESIGN NOVEMBER 2018 2018 10 LIFE LBDMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER

When we hear the word generosity we of think of giving our money or our time. Yes these are helpful. Money, time, and other assets all work towards achieving common goals. But there’s another deeper type of generosity that humans are capable of.

Find the BIG Space

This is the generosity of paying immaculate attention. The generosity of not grasping, not pushing away, and not ignoring any aspect of any moment. This is true generosity. Giving the entirety of your being to every situation.

Our usual instinct is to try to command control over the situation. We blame the salesperson or scream at the factory foreman. We construct the situation by thinking, “This shouldn’t be happening.” But guess what, it is.

So often we want to get something out of a situation. We want our environment and the people in it to give us joy, comfort, happiness. We want to control the situation to meet our preconceived notion of what the outcome should be.

To be generous, you need to give the situation some space. It may not be your fault, but it is your responsibility. You may not think that’s how it’s supposed to be, but that’s how it is.

And while it’s true that business owners must make challenging decisions that affect their desired outcomes, it’s important to maintain your generosity with those decisions. Generosity in Action So how does a CEO or sales leader give a difficult problem with generosity? A helpful tool is to thank the problem. Sound counterintuitive? Well, the truth is, the mind doesn’t do well with contradictions. If you’re facing a problem and think, “I’m glad we’re facing this dilemma. What a great opportunity to practice my leadership and decision making skills,” your mind will begin to look for ways to get rid of that contradiction, and will begin to look at ways in which this ‘problem’ is a gift. If you say, “This problem is stressing me out,” guess what your mind will look for them. So by viewing a challenge as your gift, you’re bringing generosity to the situation.

Control, as much as we all want it, is fleeting and illusory. You can do everything by the book and still lose your biggest client. You can have immaculate quality control and still have product issues.

Here are some questions you can ask: “What is this situation trying to teach me? What can I learn? What is the best action to take? How do I grow?” By relinquishing control of the situation, you gain control of your faculties. By being generous to the situation, the situation is generous and begins teaching you. So being generous isn’t just about giving your money or your time. It’s about relating with each moment as it presents itself. It’s about not wishing people or situations were different, but about fully seeing them as they are, and thanking them for what they have to teach. So go out there and give the BIGgest gift of all! Happy Selling, Chris Stock IAmChrisStock.com

Avoiding the Financial Blame Game How do you work with a significant other regarding finances? This is tricky. I know a financial review is not every couple’s dream date night, but after seeing many relationships destroyed over financial issues, I also know how important it is to be in sync. To ensure success in your mission, utilize these three fundamental principles from the book, “Extreme Ownership” written by Navy SEALs, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. 1. Extreme Ownership, “The leader must own everything in his or her world. There is no one else to blame.” (pg 29) Take Extreme Ownership of securing your household’s financial success. Your role as a leader requires ensuring your teammate understands their responsibility in the mission. Statements like “this stuff doesn’t interest me,” “I don’t understand” or “he/ she takes care of everything” lead down a dangerous path. Many of the divorces I’ve witnessed started with financial ignorance. Delegating duties based on strengths is appropriate, but as a leader, you must ensure your partner understands how their actions impact the outcome. You will be surprised to find the support that comes from a partner that comprehends how they share in the development of the household. The best situation is when two leaders emerge, both taking Extreme Ownership of the household’s success. 2. Alignment of Values and Goals, “In any organization, goals must always be in alignment. If goals aren’t aligned at some level, this issue must be addressed and rectified.” (pg 78) Ensuring values and goals are aligned is the foremost reason I always prefer to have both members

of a relationship involved in financial planning. Some people push back on getting their partner involved, often code for “I don’t want my partner to know what I am spending money on.” Think of what is being given up? Two teammates working together toward identified objectives, versus two independent agents keeping the other in the dark – who has a better chance of success? If you both agree that funding your child’s education is the primary goal of the household, avoiding buying that car you can’t afford becomes easy. Clear communication early can save you from a downfall in the future. 3. Simplify, “Combat, like anything in life, has inherent layers of complexities. Simplifying as much as possible is crucial to success.” (pg 140) Keeping things simple is the best way to ensure your household remains unified and on track to meet your goals. What are you asking of your partner? Is it clear and concise? Three priorities you can start with are: 1. Automate your finances 2. Avoid a credit card balance like the plague 3. Invest early and often (including in yourself) You can then spend time building off of these fundamentals. Most Americans struggle when it comes to discussing their finances. Try these techniques to give your household the best chance of success. Lastly, be patient. Life sets you up for a wild ride, and there are always opportunities to learn and adjust. by Rick Vazza, CFA, CFP® drivenwm.com

Nothing feels more amazing than

the sense of joy you feel when giving back. While many think giving is giving gifts, its truly comes in with many shapes and forms. We all love gifts (I sure do), who doesn’t. I’m quite sure I’m not the only person who loves receiving gifts, and I’m not talking about people giving presents. My point is, the word “gift” has been abused physically to society to be recognized as giving (take a minute to let that sink in). My definition of giving is coming from the heart or out of love. Here are a few examples of what it means to give. Giving can be seen as spending time with someone you care about because you are giving your time to be with them. Giving can be providing a meal on the table for your family because you don’t want them to starve. You see, giving is caring, and it doesn’t have to be supplied from spending money on expensive things to an individual. With that being said, there are pros & cons of giving.

it truly offers the person an increase in relationships. What that does for the person is building bonds, connections, increase their network, and all in all, make them feel amazing which then leads them to success. In the end, giving leads you to a path of success. CONS However, sometimes we can overly give, and that may cause us to be taken advantage by others and especially ourselves. Don’t get me wrong, giving back is great, but when we overdo it, we can hurt ourselves. Back to society recognizing giving is giving gifts, behind it is finances. A lot of the time, people giving has money behind it because to be quite honest, the majority of society likes things that signify a lot of money was spent on it. With that being said, someone who always gives can hurt themselves financially. First things first, you should always pay yourself. Always give, but give with balance.

PROS My mentors taught me a lesson about why a person should give no matter what. It is said, “The more someone gives, the more success will enter their lives, and for those who don’t, they will never be able to understand what it feels to be fully successful.” To someone who gives,

You might be thinking, What if no one watches? What if I mess up? I should only go live if I have something life-changing to say! I felt the same way until I broke through my fears and began. Know this about me, I did not wait till I had fancy equipment, lighting or backdrops. My ultimate goal with going live is to: show up, be known, and be trusted. Let’s overcome those fears: Fear 1: What if no one shows up? GOOD!! Start before you have an audience and practice in front of your family and friends who will support you even if you look like a goof! This is the time to practice and get more comfortable in front of the camera. Don’t hesitate to use that handy-dandy delete button whenever necessary. Please don’t be one of those people who waits for people to show up before you start. I’ve seen people wait up to 10 minutes to begin, waiting for “enough people to show up before they start.” I’m sitting here waiting, actually interested in what you are going to say but you are waiting for other people to show up before you start?!? No, open up and start within a minute or two max. If they miss something important, either repeat a short version or tell them to watch the replay. Fear 2: What if I don’t have anything unique or inspiring to say?

Know this about any audience: 1) Most people are not concerned with you as much as you think they are. If they stop to watch you, they are interested and mostly not judging you negatively. 2) They generally don’t mind being told the same types of things in a new way. Share something you watched or read from a podcast, book or article, give the author credit, but put your own spin on what you gathered. We all borrow and adapt old information. 3) Your audience wants to hear from you. They want to feel like they know you. It is hard to build credibility with an audience around the world, but if you are willing to put yourself out there, risk looking silly, and begin overcoming your fear, then you will grow an organic and genuinely interested audience that trusts you and looks to you as an authority. Live Broadcast Ideas: Do a 5-day training on your topic. Answer commonly asked questions, common misconceptions, or mistakes. Make a challenge or competition with a friend to complete a task with a funny consequence you do live (I did this; you’ll have to see me swallowing a whole spoonful of chili powder) Tell a funny story, mistake you made at the beginning of your career or broadcast a fun weekend. But more than anything, have fun, stay positive, and enjoy yourself!! by Jessica L. Moody jessicalmoody.com

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LIBERTY PUBLIC MARKET farmers markets to pull together the most unique, uncompetitive range of people who were passionate about their food and had a bit of restaurant savviness. In this public market, you will not find multiple coffee venues or sandwich shops. You will find a full variety of food cultures. A true foodies’ dream shop. We ate food samplings from several artisans. The 3-cheese, ham and cheese, and meatball type arancini (stuffed balls coated with bread crumbs and deep fried) from Roma Express were absolutely superb, especially with the sauces. The Chicken Empanada from Parana was filled with seasoned shredded chicken, roasted red bell pepper, green onion, sautéed onion and contained a tasty blend of spices. The Lobster Mac N’ Cheese from Wicked Maine Lobster was white cheddar shells served in a sourdough bread bowl – spectacularly divine.

This month we introduce you to something a little different – a food hall – a food court plus a market.

Located in the historic Liberty Station in Point Loma, Liberty Public Market is its own uniqueness of 28 artisans (restaurants and shops) with 4 more opening soon. This 25,000 square foot epic food emporium contains options ranging from sandwiches to crepes to cannoli to ramen to lobster and even oysters. There is definitely something for everyone at Liberty Public Market. Liberty Public Market is the inspiration of David Spatafore, a Coronado restauranteur, who was approached about opening a new restaurant in the old Naval Training Center. When Spatafore visited the site, he didn’t envision it as an appropriate place for a restaurant. He did, however, see it as a public market – similar to Pike’s Place in Seattle. All the public markets Spatafore has seen have been built in old historic buildings. Spatafore knew, though, that for a public market to work in San Diego, it couldn’t just be a replica of its counterparts around the world. San Diego’s public market had to showcase the food mecca that San Diego is so famously known for. In addition to adding a few of his own brands, Spatafore tapped into his resources of restaurant friends and ventured through local

Naturally, we couldn’t leave without checking out the desserts. We had Pumpkin Spice, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Lavender and Honey Macaroons from Le Parfait Paris. Not being a big dessert fan myself, these were surprisingly delicious. We also sampled Peppermint, Birthday Cake, and Chocolate Chip gelato from Scooped – the peppermint and chocolate chip were our favorites and those came home with us. There is not enough space to properly describe the food here, so I’ll just say if you truly want an extraordinary dining experience that’s a little out of the ordinary and you can taste a little bit of this and a little bit of that, give Liberty Public Market a try. I’m telling you, this place was definitely a lot of fun to check out. I felt like a kid seeing everything for the first time. SERVITUDE for GRATITUDE Was

there a problem you wanted to fix when you started your business? Think about that problem. What is it? Do you have a ‘cure’ for that problem? Every successful business has a meaning behind it. The business is modeled to fix a specific issue in the world, which in turn grants them compensation for their time. If you aren’t doing too hot with your profits, I would advise you to find that ‘cure.’ You see, after finding your “why,” you should really focus on serving. I know it sounds weird that you spend all this time figuring out why you are going to start this business and I tell you to start serving. But, without servitude, there is no gratitude. Your clients will not know how thankful and how devoted you are if you don’t serve them. If you start serving people with giving them pure knowledge, in the beginning, they can either think in one of two ways. The first would be, “It’s so amazing that he/ she knows so much… Babe, I think we should hire someone with this much experience!” Or, they can say, “Hey babe, I’m glad he/she gave me a lot of pointers, I think I can do it myself!” Which in my opinion is better. This is because when they mess up, they will go back to you, leaving you to fix not only ONE of their problems but MANY! Meaning, more compensation for your time! By just being genuine, you can get way more out of life. Whether it be in relationships or in your business. When you give and give to those around you, you’re bound to receive! After giving and giving to your prospects, it’s time to get compensated. One way to approach this is to inform your prospect of all the value that you’ve given them and to ask them then how they see you

In its simplest form owning power is the act of recognizing ‘I can do it.’ Now, it’s easy to feel capable when results and life are going great. It takes a conscious choice to feel it when life isn’t going as you’d like, or when you feel fear and doubt. To shift such feelings begins by recognizing that there’s a huge difference between what you’ve learned to believe, thus feel and create versus your true nature, how life really works and what’s possible. Owning your power is recognizing that though you may at times feel limited – you are not! Though you may be creating limited results, or haven’t been able to stop feeling limiting feelings, these do not define you or what’s possible. Not being able to create the level of emotional, health or life changes doesn’t mean you can’t. It’s just feedback for learning to make the choices that will create what you want. Results may measure the choices you’ve made or where you are in the process of creation, but they don’t define you, your power or what’s possible. Own your power: “However it’s going, or how I feel, my true nature is always a being of creative and abundant energy that is every moment one with, supported by and partners co-creating with the abundant and creative energy of Life. Thus, I am inherently all I need to be to create the results or feelings I desire. My true nature is like the sun which is millions of times hotter than it feels. Thus, I am more, and more is possible that I’ve learned to believe, feel or create so far.” “Whatever I feel physically or emotionally, however results or life is going, by the choices I can and I am able to affect how it is positively.” However, it’s going is just feedback for getting conscious with and learning to make the choices of perception and action that will produce the results and feelings I desire. This isn’t about whether or not you already know or believe this, it’s about reminding yourself this is the higher truth wherever doubts, fears or overwhelm arise to re-align with higher consciousness. Even if you haven’t yet learned how to create the results or feelings you want, owning you can directly affect your feelings, independent of changing people or circumstances, opens you to focus on learning how. DON’T JUST BE A TAKER It’s early in the morning. Still blurry eyed, I’m scouring my LinkedIn feed. Between heaping spoonfuls of oatmeal, a message pops up from someone I don’t know. “Hi, Neil. My name is ____________. I’m finishing my last year of studies at ____________ and wanted to inquire about possible positions at your company. Attached is my resume. I look forward to hearing from you.” Now I’m awake…and annoyed. This person doesn’t know me. This person didn’t mention anything about my business. From the message, it’s not even clear what type of job this person wants. All I know is that this person wants a job. People often talk about networking as an effective strategy for getting a job. Yes, networking is important. Why? Because networking is all about building relationships. You know what relationships are about? Give AND take. The person who emailed me is a taker, only concerned with what I can do for him. But what about me? What can he do for me? Why should I want to help him? Giving is as important (if not more important) as taking. What this person should have done is find out about me and my business. What do I do? Why do I do it? Where does he think he can help me? How can he help me RIGHT NOW? Whenever I contact someone, I always come with something in hand. I give. A white paper of interest. An upcoming event of interest. Something…of interest to the person I’m contacting. People remember these kinds of things. They remember you as someone who is helpful and not just looking out for yourself. They remember you as a giver, not a taker. And as for the person who contacted me on LinkedIn? His message went straight to the recycle bin. VOTED SAN DIEGO’S MOST IMPACTFUL NON-PROFIT

ACTIVE VALOR

MISSION STATEMENT: To repurpose the lives of our transitioning veterans by giving them a mentorship role to children who have lost a parent in combat or to PTSD related suicide, also referred to as gold star kids. San Diego’s most impactful non-profit voted by you is Active Valor. This San Diego based non-profit works within the veteran and *gold star family communities bringing together gild star children with mentors. They also bring together the community by hosting outdoor adventures to bring together these gold star kids and mentors! We got the honor of interviewing one of the founding members Perry Yee about this impactful non-profit. LBD: What does Active Valor do? PERRY: We work with transitioning veterans and help them regain their purpose out of leaving the military. So we started a mentorship program to pair veterans with children who have lost a parent in combat or to PTSD related suicide. And we host outdoor adventures where these veterans can then pass on their squired skill sets and knowledge to these kids that don’t have access to them. LBD: How did Active Valor start? PERRY: So I left the service back in 2011 and I spent about five years bouncing from job to job not finding anything that was really meaningful in my life after leaving the service. Working with a lot of veterans throughout the years you can see a common trend of whether they were successful in business or they had a family there was still something missing inside, and I believe that it was that sense of service, and doing something meaningful for your community or your country. LBD: Why did you choose the gold star community? PERRY: We choose the gold star community because we all have someone we have lost in-service, and we believe there is no better way to honor them than to support their families once they have passed. LBD: Where do you see Active Valor ten years down the road? PERRY: Well, ten years is quite a long time, so our first event was actually September of 2017. We started out with twelve

gold star kids and twelve veteran mentors, and every time we host an adventure we keep the same mentors with the same kids to keep that ongoing mentorship in their lives, to create a positive impact in their lives and have that familiar face. The last event that we did, we actually hot twenty-five gold star kids, and twenty-five veterans mentors, so in ten years it’s hard to see how far we will go. Unfortunately, there are a lot of gold star families but there are a lot of veterans that need this assistance as well. So its really just seeing our community grow, and we want to start hosting weekend retreats and start adventures for gold star spouses as well. LBD: What is the most amazing transformation you have seen thus far? PERRY: I would say the most amazing trend, well I don’t know if there is one. Like I said we started last year and just the amount of growth that we have had, and every time we have a new event we have new gold star families and veterans on board, and its all through word of mouth so every time we have a new family sign up that means someone took the time to talk about our organization, and the impact it has had on their kids. For us its just knowing that what we are doing is making a difference. LBD: What is are you most proud of that Active Valor has created? PERRY: What we are most proud of is along the same lines. It’s knowing that what we are doing is making a difference. And after each adventure having the spouses reach out to us and taking the time to let us know how impactful our program was for their kid. Every time we have an event we hear its the best one they have been to, so, unfortunately, we have kind of raised the bar and have to keep coming up with creative ways to make sure they have these unique experiences. We love the impact that we make in not only the kids, but also the veterans. to see that they are able to really press into the lives of the kids. LBD: What is the biggest need for Active Valor? PERRY: The biggest need for us right now is actually the funding. So we don’t have a recurring standardized fundraising program yet. The amount of growth that we have had has been great for what we can handle, but we have so many ideas of what we can do and be able to take it to the next level really relies on the funding, and the people who want to get invested in our program. Every time we bring out a sponsor for an event not only do we want to showcase what we are doing but we want them to get involved. What has been your biggest challenge throughout the time that Active Valor has been here? The biggest challenge was probably finding the gold star families for our first event. Rightfully so it is a closed-off community and we were a company that was just getting started, no one had heard of us yet, and we didn’t have any data to show them what we wanted to accomplish. But it took a long time to find those families and without those families, we don’t have a program. The hardest part was to actually showcase that we are here to actually walk the walk, and provide something

meaningful to them. LBD: What makes people in Active Valor happy? PERRY: Oh, that’s easy, it’s just putting in the time and seeing the outcome. The adventure that we just had last weekend took months of planning, and gathering materials. The kids had their own Nerf guns, that we actually pulled apart to the last screw so they could get a custom paint job. The kids have a good time no matter what, they get the time with their veteran mentors and that’s what they really want. In the end, it’s not really us making the impact it is the time that the veterans put into the gold star kids. So what makes us happy is really seeing those bonds grow between these veterans and their mentees. It is just extremely rewarding. LBD: How can our community and Life By Design support you? PERRY: The best way just helps get the word out. Like I said we are very new but we have been able to make a pretty big impact n the amount of time we have been around. But just spreading the word and let our community know that we exist. We want people to feel a part of this with every donation we try to make sure that we share what the outcome is with everyone. To get people invested in what we are doing and to know that we are here and available. LBD: What are you excited for? PERRY: We are planning our next year’s agenda, and we will also be having our second annual fundraising dinner in February of next year so be on the lookout for that and we are just looking to spread the word that we are out there. Active Valor helps bring mentorship, purpose, and community to those who have lost so much. We are so excited to have the opportunity to work with this amazing non-profit. SAN DIEGO’S IMPACTFUL ARTC - AUTISM RESOURCE & TREATMENT CENTER

MISSION STATEMENT: ARTC will bring resources and treatment together for all ages on the autism spectrum to help them live their best lives. Autism Resource and Treatment Center is one of our two finalists! This amazing non-profit focuses on gathering all resources and treatments for children and adults on the Autism spectrum, it’s basically your one-stop shop for autism. ARTC started with two young boys Luca and Micah. As a mother with two boys on very opposite ends of the Autism spectrum Tracy Sekhon wanted a place to go to help her find resources.

ing in ARTC Tracy has gotten to see the truly given heart of those around her. People who she would have never thought would be involved, are now some of the biggest supporters. She feels like this is so amazing because so many people can be involved, and find more passion and purpose in their lives. Tracy believes that each person is supposed to live with the feeling that they have a purpose, and is so happy that she can help provide a platform for people to feel this way.

Tracy decided to make a difference and sat on the board of directors for separate nonprofit as well as helped run a support group for mothers with children on the spectrum. But she noticed that many people had the same struggles that she did. At every point the same questions seemed to pop up, like

While this non-profit is amazing, it is only two years old. They are still working on building their network and bringing the ARTC vision to as many people as possible. Right now they are still in the fundraising phase, to build the ARTC building, so their service providers can finally become part of this big project. ARTC wants to get the word out so they can help as many people as possible! SO if you are interested in helping in this amazing cause visit their website and learn how to volunteer, become an Autism ambassador, or donate!

or “ what is going to happen when I am not here to support my child any longer?” So Tracy decided to do something about it, this is when ARTC was formed. With the purpose of providing an easy option to search for resources, and treatments. This isn’t only a place for children, ARTC provides services for all ages. We got the pleasure of interviewing Tracy not only about what ARTC does, but also what brings this amazing non-profit joy. We chatted about how though work-

NON-PROFIT FINALIST TRIPLE B ADVENTURES

MISSION STATEMENT: We seek to give veterans and active duty military advice, mentorship, fellowship, and networking opportunities to help them transition and survive the civilian wilderness. Triple B adventure is an outdoor veteran community that focuses on hosting events that get veterans and their families off the couch. One of the founding members found that after he left the military as he continued to go camping, hiking, and fishing he found that many other veterans wanted to join him. While some see camping as a hobby this was a time for bonding, venting, and healing. Whether it be getting away from the hustle of the city, or the bills on the counter, Triple B adventures aims to provide a space where veterans can come together in brotherhood. While San Diego is the only location, Triple B Adventures wants to scale to a national brand with chapters all over the United States. Each and every veteran that comes to Triple B Adventures gets something different out of these adventures, that is what the B, in Triple B stands for. Whether you get bullets, bonfires, of badassery, you will always leave with a feeling of brotherhood. But for the most part, what they see is veterans just enjoying being away.

and the Law of Attraction I’m sure you’ve heard of “The Secret”…it was a book, then a movie and even major influencers like Oprah have endorsed it and the powerful life-changing concept of the “Law of Attraction.” As we take a look at giving in this issue, it’s a perfect opportunity to incorporate the act of giving into the practices of the Law of Attraction. It creates a win/win synergy that benefits everyone!

up we often catch the norms and values of the people around us. In my case, I caught the values of my parents. Growing up my parents were very humble and gave. I remember them helping out family members and friends whenever they could. My parents to this day still send clothes and money to our family in Mexico. Their Mexican roots are what I believe has always kept them humble by remembering where they come from. As I grew up, I saw how many people live in different circumstances.

1. Practice gratitude. A key concept behind LOA. Journal about the things you are grateful for. Listen to affirmations or repeat the mantra “ I am grateful…” Here is the practical, physiological reason why this can help you: When stressed out, your body produces cortisol. If you have anxiety, you are engaging your adrenal gland on a regular basis. These hormones cause inflammation throughout the body, premature aging, and lead to life-threatening ailments such as cancer! When feeling “gratitude,” you feel happy, light, blissful. Your body kicks out endorphins and oxytocin. These happy hormones counteract stress and anxiety hormones. This, in turn, improves your health, longevity, vitality, energy, and outlook on life. When you are more upbeat and positive, you engage more with others, you are inspirational to your family, friends, and peers. You are simply more fun to be around. When you show gratitude towards others, you raise them up and make them feel better about themselves. 2. Meditate. Another cornerstone of LOA, the effects of this are similar to practicing gratitude. It also develops patience, clears the mind of the clutter, and allows you to increase your focus. Meditation balances the mind, body, and emotions. When you are in a healthy mental state, you can make sound, rational decisions and control negative emotional outbursts. Just as misery loves company, enthusiastic, positive people attract other enthusiastic, positive people. Those are the people who are most likely to be successful in their own right. And you become like the people you hang around. Meditation leads to mindfulness, which facilitates making positive life choices and being kind to others. The act of giving can be passive and still impactful to others. Simple actions throughout the day can lead you inevitably down a path of success and fulfillment. Small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect that spreads like wildfire, inducing positive change in the world in a big way! 3. Give of yourself generously. Now we are being more direct. As you give, so shall you receive. It seems counterintuitive that if you are lacking and desire abundance, the answer is giving what you have away. But if you try this out, you’ll see first hand how this really does work! Donate to a charity, help out a neighbor or friend in need...GIVE! It does not have to be something monetary or physical. You can be of service to others, and this aspect of LOA still holds true. In fact, what you project out into the world comes back in abundance. Be generous and the universe will be generous to you! by Latara Dragoo creativeundertakings.com

Being a stay at home mom is probably one of the toughest unpaid jobs out there, but being a working mom who only gets 3-4 hours a day with her kids is even tougher. I personally have experienced both. As a stay at home mom, I loved being there to put my 2-year-old down for her nap with stories and a rocking chair, then being the face she saw when she woke up. I loved having the opportunity to make her and my 12-year-old a good breakfast every morning without rushing, and going to “mommy and me” classes on a weekday morning. I enjoyed going places and spending time with other mom friends and their kids during the day. I loved being there 24/7 for my kids and would choose that overworking any day; however staying at home has its challenges. I was there for the good times, but I was also there for the laundry, cleaning, cooking, not getting a break or privacy except during nap time, and grocery shopping. As a working mom, I pick the kids up after getting done with work and running errands. Then it’s time to do dinner, our bedtime routine, and running them to activities in between. After that, I am responsible for the dishes, laundry, the toys to clean up, lunch to make for tomorrow, emails, my online business, and devotional time before I finally go to sleep. Although being a working mom is tough, I am treasuring the moments I have with my kids because I know one day my kids will be grown and gone and there will be no more toys to pick up, or lunch to be made. To parents: Dads, tell your stay at home or working mom how much you appreciate her. Moms, when a dad helps with dishes, dinner, laundry or with the kids, tell him how much you appreciate him. Single parents: I was in your shoes. I know your kids probably never tell you, but you are appreciated too. Knowing our hard work is appreciated makes it a little easier to keep up with all that needs to be done for our family every single day. When you are overwhelmed as a parent, and overworked as a business owner, and your mind starts to make you feel like there’s no end in sight, it’s at that time you need to focus on all that you’re grateful for in life. When you count your blessings and remember your why your mind will be at peace, and you’ll be refreshed to continue on your entrepreneurial journey. by Lauren Aven LaurenAven.com

Thought Leaders Zone

THE GRATITUDE In August of 2018, I declared that my newly released book, Being UNapologetic would hit #1 in 7 countries. Australia became the first #1. Then Canada, then the USA.

Being public is being a leader. Show others what it looks like to be an authority. Leverage your authority to build a community of followers who believe what you believe and you will also grow your business.

While every detail was planned out, from launch graphics to having people ready in multiple countries, what I didn’t plan for was how the book would ultimately claim the top spot around the world.

3. Being UNwavering. Not surprisingly, the whole world isn’t going to care that you’ve written a book. Some may even feel you’re boasting about your newfound public authority and perceived success.

It wasn’t the launch strategy or people who were sharing about the book directly – at least not exactly.

You won’t always get feedback, even from your fans. In fact, in most cases, you may not get any feedback at all.

It was gratitude.

You didn’t write a book for feedback – and if you did, you’ve written the book for the wrong reason.

I noticed a pattern. When I or someone else would share about the book in a way that expressed gratitude, people would become engaged and excited, and then we’d hit #1 in that country. Here are three practices I developed as we continued to claim #1 spots around the world: 1. Being Grateful. No one really cares that you’re releasing a book and they certainly do not care about your mission to become a best-seller. What people do get onboard with is your gratitude. When you express authentic gratitude and celebrate others, people notice. Take the time to thank the people who support you and your book. Express gratitude for the people you wrote about and quoted. Thank those who purchase and those who share about the book. You’ll find no shortage of people to thank. 2. Being Public. When you release a book, your name is on the cover. You are, by default, already in the spotlight. What if you took the opportunity to actually bring others into the spotlight with you? I invite you to do this publicly. Not simply for the sake of being public. There’s a not so fine line between being public for the sake of it (which comes across as noise), and being public because you truly want to shine the spotlight on others.

BOOK REVIEW

SUCCESS MASTERY MEMBER

Infinite Intelligence, The Universe, God, Jehovah, Allah, and etc … we’ve heard these terms used to give a title or identity of some much more powerful & unexplainable being. I have read a good number of books where entrepreneurs put faith in these entities or the supernatural power/force. Personally, I believe in God. I’ve had my own challenges of finding balance or “harmony” with myself and my spirituality. I picked up this book with the desire to understand more from another one’s perspective. Mixed. Yes, this is what I felt and thought with this book. It is written in a very Christian viewpoint. Part of me understands wholeheartedly of the obligation of a Christian, a follower of Christ, to love thy neighbor as you love yourself. Another part of me understand the principle of abundance where you are a trusted steward of small things and commanded for growth (to scale in business terms). I can see how your views on the matter will dictate how you’ll receive the message of the author. For me I can see that, “Crazy Love”, the title of the book means “Being In-love”. The author used illustrations, based on his personal life experiences, to explain how he can truly say that he’s in love with God. I know how being in love feels like (yes, my definition may be incorrect from your perspective, for the sake of this article though - it’s true for me) and I have not felt that way towards God. Maybe I have in some moments, but not always. It is definitely a beautiful concept to aim for. I did appreciate the reminder that it is up to us to make the first move, the move to get close to God. In similarity to our business, it’s up to us to initiate to build a relationship with our prospects. The bible has amazing principles that we can apply to our businesses and not just for our personal lives. I encourage you to take notes on the lessons that you can implement in your business. This book is for you if you have an open mind and for the sake of learning, just want to read something a bit more religious than the typical books on personal development that we tend to read. Happy reading! by Jennifer Meim JenniferMeim.com

WHAT’S GOING ON SAN DIEGO? Joey Wilder said, “It’s not that kind of thing.” He was wrong. Joey’s first brush with his own business was at 11 years old. Skateboard stickers were all the craze and he wanted to earn some money. He asked his grandmother to buy him some sticker paper and he used Microsoft Paint to create his own stickers. Joey then undercut the competition by selling his stickers 2 for $5 when shops sold them for $5 each. By the age of 16, Joey was a sponsored skateboarder. After a few too many accidents, he parlayed his skateboarding skills into his next venture – filming himself and his friends skateboarding. He built a website through Yahoo Site Builder, used QuickTime to upload videos, and sold Google Adspace to generate traffic. Back then having a website was the equivalent to having a thriving social media page. Around 24 years old, Joey became a personal trainer. One night while preparing for a bodybuilding show, Joey decided to have donuts for dinner. He made protein donuts, snapped a picture, and posted to Instagram saying, “Donuts for dinner.” The next morning, Joey woke up to hundreds of messages from people wanting to buy his donuts. Pete Ciconne, a professional bodybuilder and owner of 619Muscle gym even came to him saying he’d like to retail the donuts in his gym. This is when Joey said, “It’s not that kind of thing.” In response, this accomplished athlete stated, “Well, it should be.” Joey thought about what Ciconne said. He knew he was going through a dark time and he was borderline depressed. He was broke and just getting by. He took one hard look at himself and said, “What do I have to lose? I have everything to gain.” San Diego Protein Company (SDPC) was birthed. (see photo below - original first retailer photo from May 2015 with Pete Ciconne and Joey) Today, nearly 4 years later, SDPC’s donuts are in over 30 retailers. A plethora of partnerships have been established, the largest being with the Anaheim Ducks and San Diego Gulls. A Nektar juice bar franchise will also be launched within the next couple of weeks. Joey highly encourages having a community - a network that’s supportive and rallies behind you. Also, build great relationships. Seeds he planted years and years ago are just blossoming and is really a testament to operating from a place of building true connections. The biggest lesson Joey has learned during his journey is that it can always be better and it can always be worse. He advises to focus on the wins and operate from a place of passion and purpose as that’s when you’ll reap gains from your efforts. Lastly, Joey is establishing a nonprofit called The Maybe Me Foundation. This foundation will raise money to help pay for children’s sports and extracurricular activities. Participation in these outside activities can be costly and Joey’s foundation will help those kids whose parents cannot afford them. Joey enjoys hearing what someone is excited about, so connect with him and tell him what you are excited about.

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

THOMAS GIRARD

willpower to accomplish their goals. Thomas loves his new life as an entrepreneur. He mentions to us how he has the option to travel, without putting in a request, and has the freedom to accomplish his goals the way he wants to. Marketing is a must in business, Thomas still in the works of getting the word out and letting people know what is different about his team. Being in real estate he sees so many other agents that don’t care as much about the process or their clients, but only collecting that paycheck! But coming from a military background, Thomas doesn’t share that view, instead, his goal is to make the client’s process effortless. But Thomas doesn’t stop there he donates five hundred dollars of every commission to a veteran organization, whether it be one of the clients choosing or his own. Thomas decided to make that shift and really try to make a difference in the community by giving back. Not only does Thomas give back by donating money, wants to make an impact by speaking on stages to share his ideas and experiences.

Thomas is a real estate entrepreneur living right

here in San Diego California. But this wasn’t always true, originally from Tucson Arizona, Thomas moves to California to escape the weather, traffic, and overall just enjoy his life. Thomas didn’t start out as an entrepreneur, in Arizona he was a military police officer, then he worked in civilian law enforcement. His original plan moving to California was to join a Federal Agency and continue his work as a civil servant. But he met a couple that owned they own real estate office. Thomas was helping this couple deliver furniture to veterans when something changed. Thomas asked himself do I want to stay involved in law enforcement and die either of a heart attack or on the job, or do I want to do something more. Thomas decided he wanted to start something where he can make more of an impact in the lives of his peers, and veterans, so he got his license and got a mentor. Transitioning from the military to entrepreneurship can be a difficult task, Thomas moved from ten years in either military police or civilian police which both have highly regimented schedules, to entrepreneurship. Although most people have trouble finding the motivation and

If you are in the military or a veteran looking to transition into entrepreneurship Thomas’s best advice for you is, to get started as quickly as possible. But whatever happens don’t give up you have to embrace the suck, entrepreneurship isn’t easy but anything that is worth having is difficult to achieve. Thomas hopes to not only gain more speaking gigs, and continue his entrepreneurship journey but also aims to impact the youth and make a large impact in his community! One of Thomas’s long-term goals is to get twenty acres of land to build a bunch of tiny homes on, to give homeless veterans a new start.

36 LIFE BY DESIGN NOVEMBER 2018

YES stand for Young Entrepreneur Society. We are a California Nonprofit 501 (c)(3) that serves high schools on a weekly basis. Every week our team of volunteers hosts school clubs during their lunch break to bring them FREE lunch & activities, and videos around the spirit of entrepreneurship (leadership, team building, critical thinking, communication, sense of community, mindset and personal development, etc). WHY Y.E.S.? Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in teens between 13 and 18. Depression and anxiety are the number 1 and 2 mental illnesses suffered among students in high school. 1 out of 6 teens have seriously considered suicide. 1 out of 12 have attempted suicide. 78% of students have started drinking alcohol. 42.5% of students have used drugs. Of that, 25% have used hard drugs such as cocaine, LSD, and Ecstasy. 50% of students have been bullied online. Every 26 seconds a student drops out of high school. We believe this is due to lack of purpose and lack of vision. Our team comes in every week to bring the spirit of entrepreneurship to give hope and vision for their future.
