LifeBridge Health’s purpose statement, “caring for our communities together,” means that we care not only for where we work but also where we live. We want our communities to grow and thrive. One way we support this is by bringing needed services into more communities to make it easier for people to access health care.

To that end, we recently acquired a majority interest in two ambulatory surgery centers - SurgiCenter of Baltimore at 23 Crossroads Drive in Owings Mills and Ellicott City Ambulatory Surgery Center at 2850 N. Ridge Road in Ellicott City - to continue to expand our health care footprint in our communities.

Both ambulatory surgery facilities are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and provide same-day surgical care, including diagnostic and preventive procedures. Our surgery centers only treat patients who have already seen a health care provider and selected surgery as the appropriate treatment for their condition. With a strong track record of quality care and positive patient outcomes, our surgery centers provide our patients with a convenient alternative to hospital-based outpatient procedures.

The SurgiCenter of Baltimore has five operating rooms and two treatment rooms for procedures including ENT, general surgery, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery and podiatry. Surgeons at the Ellicott City Ambulatory Surgery Center specialize in gastroenterology, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, neurology, pain management and podiatry. Both ambulatory surgery facilities are available for LifeBridge employees as level one providers.

Many of you may recall the employee engagement survey we asked you to complete last fall. Our goal was to hear from as many employees as possible with your thoughts about our organization and its strengths and challenges.

By now I hope you’ve heard from your managers about the outcome of the survey. Though I was disappointed with the level of participation – especially because I value feedback from each and every one of you – we were able to gather some valuable information. While your managers were sharing that information with you, they hopefully also asked you to contribute more ideas to help us develop action plans. We are now working together as an organization to implement the actions you helped us identify, and we’ve already had some great outcomes.

To help us better understand what we are doing well, how well changes are working and where other opportunities for improvement exist, we’ll be asking for your feedback once again in November. This time, we’ll be asking you to complete a pulse survey, which is a shorter version of the employee engagement survey.

To help ensure that we are collaborating and gathering feedback from all areas and levels of the organization, I recently met with the Employee Activities Committee (EAC) members to ask for their support with the pulse survey. We’re changing the group’s name to the Employee Advisory Council (still the EAC) and, in addition to celebrating all the great things we are doing and planning fun outings and activities, the group will be advising me and the leadership team. I’ve worked with the EAC in the past to get feedback on other initiatives - like the color-coded uniforms initiative that goes live on Oct. 1 - and I saw how effective and positive that experience was. The work of this group has always been important, but nothing is more important than creating a culture we can be proud of.

Please get involved, both by supporting the work of the EAC (or joining if you are interested) and by completing the pulse survey this November. I look forward to learning how we can continue to make our organization better tomorrow than it is today.

At LifeBridge Health, we understand that our associates and employees have the greatest effect on the patient experience and quality outcomes. That is why in Fiscal Year ‘17, we seek to have the highest level of engagement from YOU.

Based on results from last fall’s employee engagement survey, we created and shared a list of focus areas for the system and hospitals. Over the past few months, with your input, leaders have created action plans to address five key areas including: if a friend or family member needed care, I would recommend the hospital; we practice the mission in our daily work; I understand what is necessary to excel in my job; communication from leaders; and a fifth area specific to each hospital.

Carroll Hospital President

I’m excited to share a couple of fantastic ideas that some of the Carroll teams have implemented. For example, the patient accounting department has set up a type of Monopoly board game. Each place on the board represents a certain number of accounts they have closed and as each member closes more accounts, they advance on the board. This allows team members to see how their work affects the department’s goals and helps track individual productivity.

In response to increasing communication from senior leadership, I’ve worked with the marketing department to produce a video series called SPIRIT Spotlight. These short videos allow me to share timely updates, offer clarification on a given issue and praise the work of team members. One of my favorite Spotlights so far was presenting the results of Carroll’s Joint Commission survey and thanking everyone for their hard work.

The above are just two examples of how teams have been addressing employee engagement. If you have questions or ideas about your team’s action plans, please talk to your department leader. Your feedback is important and we want to hear from you!

Employee Recognition Northwest Hospital SuperStar Eziaku Makia, a clinical pharmacist, is unfailingly kind, diligent, hardworking and patient-focused.

She began her career at Northwest as a pharmacy student before becoming a clinical pharmacist working the night shift. Eziaku is very engaged with the nursing staff and is consistently Eziaku Makia (left) & Brian White focused on the clinical and operational workflow of the pharmacy department. She has been described as “amazing!” by her customers. If she makes a promise to someone she is guaranteed to fulfill that promise. Eziaku is the model of “accountable” behavior, and she is also a champion for her patients. A joy to be around, she is the absolute definition of a SuperStar. We are thankful and proud to have Eziaku as a member of our team at Northwest Hospital.

Carroll Hospital SuperStar Registered nurse Erin Ricker recently demonstrated what it means to be an extraordinary associate and, for her efforts, she’s been chosen as August’s SuperStar of the Month.

It happened when Erin and the ED staff responded to an emergency in the parking area outside the front lobby. A Erin Ricker patient was brought in about to have her baby but instead of having it onsite, the baby was born in the vehicle before Erin arrived.

Erin used a towel in the vehicle to stimulate the baby to make it cry—effectively helping the baby take its first breath. Then, after a special delivery kit was brought to the scene, she used the emergency tools to clamp the umbilical cord safely before both mother and baby were taken to the ED for further care.

Sinai Hospital SuperStar

Levindale SuperStars Sharon Smith and Jenice Price routinely go above and beyond for the residents (and their families) on Households 1 & 2 by organizing fun events.

In the past they have done a Super Bowl party, Valentine’s Day party and most recently, they had a Jenice Price (left) & Sharon Smith prom. We learned about these events not from them, but from the families and residents who raved over the event. They spoke about how nice the decorations were, the consideration given to them to get kosher food, the prom clothes they provided and the incorporation of the families to participate free of charge!

Sharon and Jenice truly embody the LifeBridge SPIRIT values and try very hard to keep in line with the principles of the Eden alternative on a daily basis! The residents, coworkers and family members are given a greater comfort knowing that they are in good hands.

Sterling Kelly

“Sterling Kelly touches everyone he encounters with his warm and welcoming way! LifeBridge Health is fortunate to have such a pleasant, customer service-oriented, highperforming employee,” says Laura Geissler, director of learning and organizational development at Sinai Hospital.

Sterling, an employee with LifeBridge Health for more than eight years, began working at Sinai Hospital as a food and nutrition supervisor. In 2013, he transferred to human resources to become that department’s administrative assistant.

Always willing to lend a helping hand to his co-workers, Sterling leads by example. With his extraordinarily positive attitude and infectious smile, he makes his clients and team feel valued by going above and beyond to meet and exceed expectations.

Sterling stands out because of his professional demeanor; he never gets heated in the maze of assignments, deadlines and multiple requests. Valued as a natural motivator, he goes beyond the initial questions to make sure employees get the correct answers.

According to his teammates, this SuperStar can melt the freeze out of the naysayers, won’t doers and complainers!

Team LifeBridge As a way to get to know each other and our organization better, each month we’re introducing you to members of Team LifeBridge.

Sinai Hospital: Kujichagulia Center Kujichagulia is the Swahili word for “self-determination,” and the young men of Sinai Hospital’s Kujichagulia Center are truly embracing their name.

This grant-funded program, better known as the Kuji Center, teaches life and job skills to young men (generally between the ages of 19 and 25) who live in the 21215 ZIP code.

The project allows the interns to give back to the community, using the authenticity of their own voices to connect with others. It’s part of the Center’s Workforce Readiness Program under the direction of Ademola Ekulona of Sinai’s community initiatives department.

Check out the Kuji Center’s Facebook page and Instagram account! https://www.facebook.com/KujichaguliaCenter-1745960538955040/ Sinai Hospital: Security Department The motto of Sinai Hospital’s security department is “See Something, Say Something.” With more than 60 security officers, 13 customer security service associates, two security techs and one badging administrative assistant on site, visitors, patients and employees are used to seeing officers dressed in blue uniforms around our campus and parking areas.

Always striving for excellent customer service, Sinai’s security officers work behind the scenes to keep patients and employees safe.

The security department has enhanced its operations and effectiveness using state-of-the-art technology. Officers now use Segways to patrol outside parking lots and garages, and have installed a network of 700 security cameras

throughout the hospital campus, recording 24/7. They also ensure that the 3,000 electronic ID cards used by employees are enabled to unlock copious building doors. However, at the end of the day security officers still consider their most effective weapon to be words. Officers are trained in “verbal judo” to calmly de-escalate situations through conversations.

Northwest Hospital: Stroke Center Nurse Coordinator Faye Elliott, is the quality nurse coordinator for the Stroke Center at the Northwest Hospital.

As part of her job, Faye is responsible for organizing and handling logistics and some clinical matters for an interdisciplinary group of medical experts who make sure patients receive the best care possible, including early diagnosis and advanced interventions using the most suitable procedures.

The extraordinary efforts of the entire stroke team have earned the Northwest program the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for outstanding and consistent performance within the Association’s national “Get with the Guidelines Stroke Achievement Measures” for 2015. It was also named to the Association’s Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus for efforts to reduce door-to-needle times.

Carroll Hospital: Quality Department While all Carroll Hospital associates are committed to patient safety and providing quality care, Carroll Hospital’s quality department helps to ensure it remains at the forefront of everyone’s actions.

Led by Laura Hooper, director of quality outcomes management, the quality department consists of eight associates who monitor the activities of departments to assure quality outcomes for patients. How? They collect, aggregate and analyze clinical data to identify opportunities for improvement. They also develop action plans, assure implementation and evaluate their effectiveness. The hospital’s quality dashboaris the tool most frequently used to readily identify where improvement is needed.

Sinai Hospital Receives Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award Sinai Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll-Elite Plus.” The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized guidelines, which are based on the latest scientific evidence.

Hospitals must achieve 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieve 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality measures to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll-Elite Plus, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams follow the most up-todate, evidence-based guidelines, with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

“A stroke patient loses 1.9 million neurons each minute stroke treatment is delayed. The Sinai stroke-response team is committed to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely,” says Adrian Goldszmidt, M.D., chief of the Department of Neurology at Sinai Hospital. “Sinai Hospital continues to strive for excellence in the acute treatment of stroke patients. This recognition from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesStroke further reinforces our team’s hard work.”

Michael Tangrea, Ph.D., director of clinical research at the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute at LifeBridge Health and scientific director of the Sinai Hospital BioIncubator, was chosen to be a panelist at the recently held Cancer Moonshot Summit in Baltimore.

Hosted by the Liberty Road Business Association, more than 6,000 people in more than 270 locations around the country took part in the summit, created under the guidance of Vice President Joe Biden, with a goal of doubling the speed of research and treatment in the fight against cancer.

The summit consisted of group discussions, breakout sessions and video-streamed addresses from the vice president as well as remarks from Don Graves, the deputy assistant to President Barack Obama. Participants included individuals and groups from health care, academics and businesses, government representatives as well as cancer survivors, family members and community advocates.

The Lapidus Cancer Institute at LifeBridge Health has a robust research department, working around the clock to test the safety and efficacy of new drugs, develop new regimens of treatment and evaluate new approaches to existing treatments.

Sinai Hospital Welcomes Its First Sports Neurology Fellow Congratulations to Andrew Guidry, M.D., who joins the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute and the Department of Neurology at Sinai Hospital as its first sports neurology fellow.

The Brain & Spine Institute, a national leader in neurology, has developed the only sports neurology fellowship program on the East Andrew Guidry, M.D. Coast and is one of just five in the nation. This new subspecialty has emerged because of increased interest in sports-related neurological injuries, including head injuries, which affect all athletes, from seasoned pros to weekend warriors.

Kevin Crutchfield, M.D., who directs the Sports Neurology Center at the institute and works with the Ravens, Orioles and D.C. United, says, “For our first sports neurology fellow, we wanted not only someone who had advanced neurology training, but also someone who ideally had been involved in

sports so that he or she would intrinsically understand the athlete’s psyche. Dr. Guidry brought that combination, and we are pleased to have him on our team.” Dr. Guidry, who says he was a football fanatic since childhood, played for Duke University.

“I am honored to be the inaugural fellow in the Brain & Spine Institute’s sports neurology program,” says Dr. Guidry, who has signed on for a two-year fellowship. “I look forward to learning and training side-by-side with nationally recognized experts and helping people with conditions such as concussions, ALS and epilepsy. I know that this program will help me to develop as a researcher as we work to gain greater understanding of the neurological conditions that affect athletes.”

Dr. Guidry graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. After earning a medical degree from the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University, he completed a neurology residency at Emory University School of Medicine.

Northwest Hospital Introduces Huddle Boards Northwest Hospital recently implemented huddle boards in five model areas – the emergency department, registration, surgery, imaging, and the geriatric/respiratory/cardiac unit (GRCU) located on 3AB. The huddle boards, which are long whiteboards divided into sections, are part of the operational excellence management systems rollout at Northwest. They are tools used for visual management that include daily information like the plan for the day, who the doctors and charge nurses are, the daily census, and details on staff meetings and deliveries. The boards also have sections for scorecards, improvement opportunities and employee recognition.

“The goal of the huddle boards is to bring improvement tools to the department level and involve front-line staff in problem solving,” says Ryan Gruver, director of operational excellence at Northwest Hospital.

She says the staff has offered positive feedback about the board because they like knowing how their shift will start and having a place for everyone to come together. “They like being able to contribute and understand how the work they are doing is connected to the hospital’s goals,” says Patti, “and it’s really great to have a place to recognize each other.”

Tip of the Month: AIDET We’ve told you before about AIDET - five behaviors to use in every patient and staff interaction to anticipate, meet and exceed expectations of patients, co-workers and visitors – but did you know that we are rolling AIDET out systemwide? The use of AIDET is a national best practice and is a way we can ensure consistent communication; prevent misunderstandings; increase confidence; save time; increase compliance; improve patient perception of care; and connect to purpose.

Super Girl Super Fun Pamper Party The Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai and the Lenny “Batman” Robinson Hope for Henry Foundation recently co-hosted a Super Girl Super Fun Pamper Party for pediatric patients and their families who are receiving treatment at the Children’s Hospital.

The festivities included manicures, makeovers and accessories for glam photographs. And because princesses know all about beauty, Elsa and other royalty stopped by to join in the fun.

The Hope for Henry Foundation hosts innovative events that entertain, reduce stress and empower children with cancer and other serious illnesses to be active participants in their own care. The foundation has a child life specialist at Sinai to provide comfort to children and manage the Hope for Henry programs at the hospital.

“Every interaction with patients and family members count and AIDET is the foundation for consistency to those interactions,” says Sharon Hendricks, director of patient experience at Northwest Hospital and Levindale.

AIDET stands for: Acknowledge; Introduce; Duration; Explanation; Thank You Acknowledge — Greet people with a smile, make eye contact, and use their names if you know them.

Introduce — Introduce yourself to others politely. Tell them who you are and how you are going to help them. Escort people where they need to go rather than pointing or giving directions.

Duration — Keep in touch to ease waiting times. Let others know if there is a delay and how long it will be. Make it better and apply service recovery methods when necessary.

Explanation — Explain, in language the patient will be comfortable with, what will happen during his / her exam, procedure or appointment. Ask the patient if he / she has questions or if there is anything else you can do. For example: “The test takes about 30 minutes. The first step is drink this solution and then we’ll have you wait 20 minutes before we take a blood sample?”

Thank You — Thank the patient. Foster an attitude of gratitude. Thank people for entrusting us with their care.

Belvedere’s Pocket Park Gets Spruced Up Last month, as part of Baltimore City’s Healthy Neighborhoods initiative, the Cylburn and Levindale – Sunset communities, located just south of Sinai Hospital and Levindale, volunteers from LifeBridge Health’s Community Service Corps worked to develop and beautify a small park at the corner of Belvedere Avenue and Sunset Road known as the Belvedere Pocket Park.

In keeping with LifeBridge Health’s values of promoting civic and community engagement, the Community Service Corps consists of employees who volunteer with local community groups and non-profit organizations in activities and events that help strengthen neighborhoods near our campuses. Together, 10 LifeBridge Health employees and 16 community members formed a group that landscaped the park with 200 bags of hardwood mulch and planted 15 Manhattan Euonymus plants. The leftover mulch was donated and delivered to residents in the surrounding area.

Carroll Signs Pledge to Screen 80% of Residents for Colorectal Cancer by 2018 To raise awareness of and prevent colon cancer in the community, Carroll Hospital President Leslie Simmons, with the support of associates in the human resources and Tevis Center for Wellness departments, signed a pledge to help ensure 80 percent of residents in Carroll County are screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.

The pledge is part of a national initiative led by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable to increase colon cancer screening rates among adults age 50 or older in Maryland.

Carroll Hospital is one of many hospitals in the state to sign the ACS’s pledge. To encourage Carroll Hospital staff members and the public to get their recommended testing for colon cancer, in the coming months, the hospital will offer information on colon cancer and screenings as part of its comprehensive associate wellness program, and continue working with its nurse health navigators and health providers to encourage community members to comply with colon cancer screening guidelines.

Congratulations to the Sinai Hospital employees who received recent recognition for their outstanding work!

Sinai Hospital President Amy Perry was part of “the prize patrol” visiting winners of the “iCARE” program, which recognizes employees who “Communicate, Anticipate, Respect and Exceed” expectations.

Employees from ‎LifeBridge Health gathered with more 10,000 people for Baltimore City’s Pride Parade on Saturday, July 23. Although it was over 100 degrees, the team members had a great time and are looking forward to taking part again next year!

Reverend Domanic Smith recently joined Suzanne Schlattman of the Maryland Citizens Health Initiative (MCHI) to accept a wonderful honor from Baltimore County Council. The council issued a proclamation in support of the work that the Maryland Faith Health Network, a partnership between LifeBridge Health, MCHI and dozens of local faith organizations do to improve the health of Marylanders.

Volunteer Emerging Leaders

Sinai Hospital’s 2015-16 Volunteer Emerging Leaders attended a congratulatory lunch on June 17 after completing a successful year of leadership programs and fundraising activities. The student volunteers were selected based upon completion of 100 hours of service and reviews from their supervisors at Sinai. Using professional models and tools, the Volunteer Emerging Leadership Program aims to forge lasting bonds between Sinai Hospital and our top-performing volunteers, and guide future leaders within our community.
