GET THE SHOT, NOT THE FLU

It’s that time of year! Time to roll up your sleeves and get your flu shot. At LifeBridge Health, all employees and medical staff are required to get a flu shot each year. Beyond being mandatory, it’s the best way to protect your colleagues, your patients, your loved ones, and yourself as winter approaches.

Influenza Vaccination Kick-Off begins on Thursday, Sept. 29. The flu shot is free for all employees. Those who get the shot will receive 75 LIveWell points (Carroll Hospital and Carroll Health Group associates are exempt).

To receive your shot, visit the Occupational Health Services office at your facility. No appointments are necessary.

All employees and medical staff must receive their flu shots by Nov. 14.

Health care workers with egg allergies will be provided FluBlok®, which is devoid of egg components; egg allergy is no longer an acceptable declination.

FluMist will NOT be provided by Occupational Health Services this flu season and will also not be allowable as “proof of vaccination” due to the CDC/ ACIP’s stance that it has not been proven effective in flu prevention.

Employees and medical staff are encouraged to consult updated policies related to influenza vaccination (both HR and medical staff policies).

Neil Meltzer LifeBridge Health President and CEO

I am pleased to share with you some exciting news about LifeBridge Health and our Medicare ACO (Accountable Care Organization).

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) just announced the 2015 performance year results for the Medicare Shared Savings Program. Our LifeBridge Health ACO was among the national leaders in quality and cost savings!

Medicare ACOs are groups of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers, who come together voluntarily to provide coordinated, high-quality care to their Medicare patients. The goal of coordinated care is to ensure that patients, especially the chronically ill, get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors. When an ACO exceeds quality and financial thresholds-demonstrating achievement of high-quality care and wiser spending of health care dollars-it is able to share in the savings generated for Medicare.

Our results were so strong that the LifeBridge Health ACO was among fewer than one-third of the 392 Medicare ACOs nationwide to receive this recognition. This is a testament to the high-quality care our health system and providers provide to our patients while balancing the cost of care.

We are also proud that two of the three Maryland ACOs that received CMS recognition (LifeBridge Health and the Frederick Integrated Healthcare Network) are members of the Advanced Health Collaborative, the health care alliance we pioneered last year to share ideas and explore opportunities to enhance the quality of health care, reduce costs and improve the health of people in the State of Maryland-a concept known as the “Triple Aim.” And, while we talk about numbers and outcomes and quality, at the end of the day, we are talking about people and providing the best care possible for them, fulfilling the very mission of LifeBridge Health itself to maintain and improve health in the communities we serve.

As you know, last month the U.S. News & World Report 2016-17 Best Hospital’s report ranked the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute 36th out of nearly 5,000 hospitals surveyed, and Sinai Hospital tied for third in both the state and Baltimore metro region.

This is Sinai Hospital’s highest ranking ever. I along with our leadership am committed to keeping this momentous recognition propelling us forward; as well as furthering our vision that Sinai is the future of health care.

An essential component to this continued success is establishing a consistent model for the way that we treat our patients, their families and our coworkers; and it’s crucial that we continue to implement various programs, including the service model AIDET, an acronym for Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explain, Thank.

I am asking you to actively commit to these five fundamentals of service to provide excellent care for our patients and their families. Through your dedication, AIDET, will not only create a consistent service message that guides all of our actions, but will serve to enhance Sinai Hospital’s reputation as the care provider of choice in the region.

AIDET Fundamentals: Acknowledge: Greet people with a smile, make eye contact, and use their names if you know them.

Introduce: Introduce yourself to others politely. Tell them who you are and how you are going to help them. Escort people where they need to go rather than pointing and giving directions.

Duration: Keep in touch to ease waiting times. Let others know if there is going to be a delay and how long it will be.

Explanation: Keep patients, residents and families informed. Always ask, “Is there anything else I can do for you?”“I have the time.”

Brian White Northwest Hospital and Levindale President

At Northwest Hospital, in our Quest to be the Best in quality and patient satisfaction, it’s obvious to me that when we collaborate together, as hundreds of problem solvers, our collective ideas are the seeds from where the solutions will be found.

I recently held two all-staff meetings at the hospital and invited all of you to participate. I’m so pleased that hundreds of you joined me, and more importantly, shared your experiences and opinions to help us become the best hospital we can be.

As you know, we’re here to help our patients, their families and each other – it’s why we exist – and we know that an actively engaged organization is a successful one. If every one of us shows up each day wanting to make us better, we can and will achieve great things.

To that end, your commitment and dedication to Northwest is highly valued. To show our appreciation, we enjoy recognizing those of you who go out of your way to make a difference with high performer incentives, or by offering you quarterly employee appreciation days. The newly revamped Employee Advisory Council is also partnering with me to help execute successful employee engagement programs. The employee feedback sessions, like the ones we just completed, and the upcoming Pulse survey in November are also ways of keeping in touch with you and gathering your feedback and suggestions. However, I hope you all feel free to contact me or other leaders in your area and throughout the hospital to share your thoughts and suggestions about our organization at any time.

In the coming weeks and months, I and the leadership team will review your valuable insights, compare them to prior all-staff meetings to look for trends, and develop related actionable items. In the meantime, I sincerely want to thank all of you who attended the meetings and for being a part of our Quest to be the Best.

Every year we set goals for the organization to challenge ourselves to raise the bar and continue our focus of providing high quality care and the best patient experience. Our success cannot be achieved in the executive office; it depends on each and every employee understanding his or her role and how to make changes that will result in the best possible outcomes.

For fiscal year 2017, the LifeBridge Health corporate goals for each hospital fall under the following categories:

• Appropriate Utilization — ensuring patients are receiving the right care in the right setting and that they have the resources they need when they go home so they don’t have to return to the hospital.

• Patient Experience – improving customer services scores (HCAHPS – or patients’ perceptions of their care).

• Employee/ Physician Engagement — our employees and physicians are what keep the organization running smoothly.

We have been listening to your feedback, and we are committed to making LifeBridge Health the best place to work and practice medicine.

• Financial — we want to accomplish all of the above while meeting our financial targets. Based on our reimbursement model, the quality of care we provide can have a big impact on our finances.

Have an idea of how we can improve in any of these areas? Let us know! Tell your supervisor or provide feedback on surveys, at department meetings and in other forums. You are doing the work and we value your input on the most efficient and patientfriendly ways of doing things.

Harold Wilson, a dietary aide host, has been selected as Northwest Hospital’s SuperStar of the month.

What makes this award so special is that 16 nurses, including Nurse Manager Patti Mowery, from units 3A and 3B nominated James Chambers, Harold Wilson & Brian White Harold for this honor! As this month’s SuperStar, he is being recognized for his outstanding service to his patients and the clinical team that he supports. We are very proud of Harold for making a difference every day, and for being seen as a key partner an contributor to the overall success of the units.

Harold truly exemplifies our SPIRIT values. So, congratulations to him for being a “SuperStar” in every sense of the word!

Leisa McDaniels

In health care, the care a provider gives to a patient not only affects them, it also makes a huge difference in the quality of life of the patient’s family or caregiver. With this in mind, we want to highlight the exceptional care that Leisa McDaniels, an outpatient palliative care nurse, provided for her patient and family.

She is Carroll Hospital’s September SuperStar. When a patient’s caregiver was overwhelmed, and physically and emotionally drained with the demands of caring for her seriously ill mother alone, Leisa gave her the assistance she required. She advocated to get the patient in-home hospice services and durable medical equipment, and consistently made herself available to answer questions. According to the caregiver, Leisa was her “angel from heaven.”

Levindale SuperStar Leona Harper is Levindale’ SuperStar of the month.

Nominated by her coworke Desiree Erdman, Leona has been employed at Levindal for more than eight years, where her dedication to the residents and their families, as well as her commitment to fulfilling the Eden Alternative philosophy at the facility, is greatly Maggie Morgan-Lamb, Leona Harper & Idriz Limaj admired by all. There is no question Leona is committed to going above and beyond. Her leadership initiative during the recent Get in the Game giving campaign was endless.

She made fliers and worked the fundraising events. Leona sold over 275 raffle tickets for her department’s gift basket!

Her warm and cheerful attitude encouraged others to participate too.

Leona interactions with residents exemplify patience and admirable tact. She often lets us know when residents, who trust and confide in her, have concerns.

In every way, her personality embodies LifeBridge Health’s SPIRIT values of service, performance, innovation, respect, integrity and teamwork.

Team LifeBridge Auxiliary Edition We have a special “auxiliary” edition of Team LifeBridge, our initiative to get to know each other and our organization better.

This month, we are profiling the auxiliary presidents from each LifeBridge Health hospital. The auxiliaries are groups of dedicated volunteers who work closely with each facility to raise funds and organize events for patients, residents, their families and the community.

Let’s meet this month’s representatives of Team LifeBridge!

Barbara Gunther – Carroll Hospital Auxiliary President “Being a part of the Auxiliary makes my heart swell with pride,” Barbara says.

The volunteers in this dynamic organization do great work to provide patient and hospital support, fundraising and community outreach.

“The Auxiliary works diligently to support the vital community and hospital needs, which makes a difference in the lives of so many in Carroll County,” she adds.

Auxiliary members raise money to develop programs and projects for the hospital, and each year they designate a different project. Over a five-year period, the Carroll Auxiliary has pledged $1.75 million to the hospital. This money is raised through various projects, fundraising events, galas and fashion shows, as well as through their four retail shops. This year, the fifth year of their pledge, they have a $350,000 fundraising goal to support the purchase of two portable, state-of-the-art digital-image X-ray machines for the hospital and The Family Birthplace.

Marcia Bornfriend – Levindale Auxiliary President ”Our Auxiliary is dedicated to enhancing the lives of our residents by funding a variety of activities throughout the year. I absolutely love being a member of the Levindale Auxiliary; it gives me a wonderful feeling that what we do makes a difference in the residents’ lives,” says Marcia.

The Auxiliary at Levindale raises money in a variety of ways including their gift shop, fundraisers, personalized contribution cards and vendor sales. The money raised goes toward a variety of activities for the residents of Levindale. They host happy hours, ice cream and snowball parties, and their annual “Face to Face” Sunday, which is an exciting, fun-filled afternoon for the residents and their families.

Joann Nagy – Sinai Hospital Auxiliary President “Having an Auxiliary gives me and everyone who is part of the Auxiliary an opportunity to give back internally and externally,” Joann says.

The Auxiliary at Sinai promotes positive relationships between Sinai Hospital and the community, including patients and families. The Auxiliary also builds upon and sustains Sinai’s Jewish heritage through holiday observances extended to the patients, their families and Sinai Hospital staff. For 68 years, the Sinai Hospital Auxiliary has been serving the hospital and the surrounding community.

Looking forward, Joann says, they would like to expand their programs and services to meet future needs.

Audrey Lifcovich – Northwest Hospital Auxiliary President At Northwest, the Auxiliary raises funds for the hospital to be used wherever necessary. Audrey tells us, “We pledged $500,000 for the renovations of the new emergency department, and all of this was brought on by volunteers.”

The Northwest Auxiliary is comprised entirely of volunteers, something they are very proud of! Funds are gathered through their beautiful gift shop, which is also run and managed by volunteers, including Audrey herself.

Getting to Know “Just Culture” At LifeBridge Health we’re committed to fostering a Just Culture in which the reporting of incidents and near-misses is encouraged, people who make honest mistakes are not blamed, and people are encouraged to come forward to help solve problems.

LifeBridge Health is accountable for the systems it designs to provide safe care, and employees are responsible for the quality of their choices and behaviors. A Just Culture strives to nurture a blame-free culture, encouraging everyone to report good catches and actual events, and more importantly, inspire a shared approach to problem-solving.

Valuing input from the people who actually use the systems and processes to reduce the risk of harm is fundamental to the success of a Just Culture environment. As a patient-andfamily-centered health system, LifeBridge Health will be embracing the concepts of Just Culture to promote patient safety because, without it, failure oftentimes leads to serious negative outcomes.

Going forward, the quality departments at Sinai and Northwest hospitals, and Levindale are partnering with human resources to strengthen the adoption of Just Culture across LifeBridge Health. At Carroll Hospital, new employees are introduced to the principles during orientation.

An education program for leaders has been developed to emphasize how to adapt Just Culture’s principles in actual scenarios, and an education module is being developed for staff to ensure everyone understands their contribution. In addition, LifeBridge Health leadership is seeking to engage medical staff at each hospital location, beginning with Sinai, where Just Culture will be the Patient Safety Grand Rounds topic in January.

Just Culture is a major component of patient safety at LifeBridge Health. Stay tuned to hear more about patient safety in the coming months, including our LifeBridge Health Safety Campaign and our Culture of Safety survey.

Playground Build: Sunday, Oct. 30 Join us for a day of fun and festivities on Sunday, Oct. 30, as we come together to build a playground in Park Heights.

It’s Sinai Hospital’s gift to our community as we celebrate our 150th anniversary!

Sinai Hospital volunteers will work side-by-side with neighbors and community members as we build a playground in ONE day! Family and friends can join the team too. In fact, we’re looking for volunteers to get the job done.

The playground site is at the corner of Park Heights and Garrison avenues in Park Heights. We are working with Park Heights Renaissance and Neighborhoods United, enthusiastic partners who are excited about this new addition to the neighborhood that will benefit families and children. They have been working closely with us throughout the planning process.

Designed by children who live in Park Heights, more than 70 community members will be building the playground with us on Oct. 30. General construction will go on rain or shine!

Brian White, president of Northwest Hospital, held two all-staff meetings at Northwest last month. Hundreds of employees shared their ideas to help Northwest become the best hospital it can be. Northwest leadership is reviewing the valuable insights that were shared to develop action items that can improve patients’ experiences. Thanks to all who attended!

Dr. Aziza Shad was honored to accept a check for $56,000 from the JUST TRYAN IT Foundation on behalf of the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai. Children ages six to 14 took part in a triathlon where they swam, rode bikes and ran courses at Park School. To participate, the kids also had to raise money to assist families at the Samuelson Children’s Hospital, to learn the importance of being physically fit and helping others. The foundation was created in honor of 12-year-old Ryan Darby who beat cancer when he was six.

Former Sinai Hospital patient Grace Callwood is the latest recipient of the Peace First Prize. The prize recognizes Grace for her compassion, courage and ability to create collaborative change in her locality. Grace kindly donated $5,000 of her winnings to establish a patient assistance fund in the hospital’s pediatric hematology/oncology clinic.

Congratulations to our Northwest Hospital employees who recently received recognition for their outstanding work!

Northwest Hospital President Brian White drew names for the You Make a Difference drawing, which included employees who were recognized by patients. Winners of the drawing included Lala Hydara (pictured with Brian), as well as Maria Sarausa, Toyin Atoki, James Ferriabough and Natresa Stuckey. Congratulations!

Congratulations to P. Jay Foreman, Ph.D., M.D., who was awarded the Neurology Outstanding Educator in Community Clinic Award on Sept. 8.

Medical students in the neurology clerkship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine voted him to be an outstanding faculty member and a distinguished community clinic preceptor, who provided an effective and enjoyable teaching environment for the 2015–16 academic year.

The festivities recognized employees who received a commendable or distinguished rating on their evaluations in April, May and June. Congratulations to all for this fantastic achievement.

Congratulations to new homeowner James McGill. After reading about the Live Near Your Work Program in the August issue of the Bridge, James, a PACS administrator at Northwest Hospital for more than 10 years, decided to purchase his home in Baltimore County. Availing of the new financial incentives offered to LifeBridge Health employees, James says, “I receive many benefits from taking part in the program, not to mention my five-minute commute to the hospital! More seriously, I expect to see a reduction in my gas prices and insurance rates, and being an on-call employee, I can more promptly resolve issues at work that improve patient care.”
