Lasting Purpose:

To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – Out of a Sense of Abundance

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Greetings, LIFE Alumni and Friends! From the Fall CElebration event, where we welcomed 1,650 of you back to campus for continuing education and fun, to the largest incoming class of new students starting their vitalistic health journeys, there’s no shortage of excitement and energy at Life University this fall. This is certainly one of my favorite times of the year! Speaking of Fall CElebration, there was certainly a lot to celebrate over the five-day event. Some of you who hadn’t seen our campus in a while took advantage of our campus walking tours, getting a chance to see up-close just how much change and progress has touched our campus in recent years. We also witnessed the end results of two major renovations on campus — the Lasting Purpose Pool and the new Lupo Family Field. B.J. Palmer’s Cadillac even made a grand appearance! Make sure to check out the pictures and stories from Fall CElebration on pages 6-11 of this issue. And save the date for next year’s event — Sept. 27-Oct. 1, 2017. The fall issue of Your Extraordinary LIFE is always a special one for me, as it contains my report on this past fiscal year and allows me to reflect on some of the achievements we’ve been able to accomplish together. I emphasize the “together” aspect because of its importance; nothing we do at LIFE could be done without the support of our alumni and friends. In the report, you’ll find everything from financial numbers and enrollment data to a long list of all the people who help make LIFE the not-solittle University that is changing the world — our donors. It touches my heart to see that list grow each and every year.

‘It touches my heart to see that list grow each and every year.’

One more thing I want to touch on is something I’m sure a lot of you have already heard about, but if not, I can assure you will in the near future. On Oct. 13, we had the official grand opening of the VitalAtlanta in Midtown Atlanta, the first-of-its-kind collective of Life University Health Systems, Atlanta Birth Center, Shanna Jackson Psychotherapy and Intonu Wellness Naturopathic Medicine. VitalAtlanta is a space where people can go for a myriad of whole-health services in all phases of life, from infancy and childhood to adulthood and beyond. The Life University Health Systems-Midtown Clinic component is a 7,000-square-foot wellness center offering on-site professionals and services in the fields of Chiropractic, functional neurology, vitalistic nutrition, functional kinesiology and positive psychology. I truly believe this facility is the office of the future — and now the present — in the profession. You can find out more about this incredible vision turned a reality by visiting VitalAtlanta.com. In closing, I want to encourage each and every one of you to keep up the good work. Keep showing the world that what B.J. said, “The power that made the body, heals the body,” is what we are all about. Also, it is my hope that you will all have a wonderful holiday season with your family, friends and loved ones. Yours in Chiropractic,

Guy F. Riekeman, D.C. President

ON THE ROAD

The Executive, Enrollment and Advancement teams at Life University are on the road year-round, hosting alumni events and making personal visits to connect and engage with Life University’s vibrant alumni and friends all over the country. You may have seen these familiar faces at a recent convention or in your private practice. In the past six months, the Advancement Team has collectively visited more than 200 alumni and friends. To see where we are headed next, check out our events calendar at Alumni.LIFE.edu/Events and, if you see us out and about, be sure to introduce yourself. Here’s where we visited from June to August: PENNSYLVANIA LIFE took Philadelphia by storm again for the Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC), one of the biggest tournaments of the year for the LIFE undergraduate rugby team. In addition to showcasing our athletic

ALABAMA While Leffard cheered on LIFE at the CRC, Alumni Relations Coordinator Kelsey Donaldson visited Alabama to attend the Alabama State Chiropractic Association’s annual convention. Held in Birmingham, Donaldson connected with many familiar faces at the booth, including Alabama State Representative and Regional Coordinator Dr. Darla Lasseter (’11) and classmates Drs. Chris Corsentino (’89) and David Netherland (’89).

prowess on one of the biggest stages for both the men and women teams, we attended a successful LIFE kickoff party and after-hours celebration event held by Dr. Stu Katzen (’97) at the Field House. Alumni Relations Director Mary Ellen Leffard and LIFE alumna Dr. Sandy Elbaum (’90) garnered support of our alumni and friends to join the Elite 150 — a group of individuals committed to help fund the remaining $150,000 needed to complete Lupo Family Field. By the weekend’s end, the pair recruited 12 new Elite 150 donors! MISSOURI Leffard kicked off the new fiscal year with her annual Midwest road trip. She visited State Representatives Drs. Travis Gholson (’98), who signed up Dr. Patrick Komeshak (’96) to be a member of the President’s Circle, and Patrick Komeshak (’96). Gholson is teaming up with the LIFE Enrollment Department

to host student recruitment events in his area, while Komeshak’s has been an outstanding representative for his state (he even sent out his email in the middle of moving his office). VIRGINIA Director of Development Erin Dancer visited Dr. Wendy Jacobs (’94) at her practice in Arlington. Jacobs is a proud supporter Dr. Wendy Jacobs (’94) of LIFE athletics and once served as a trainer when she was a student at LIFE. She has a growing practice and works alongside her two furry companions, Gonstead and Butterscotch. GEORGIA Assistant Director of Development Mark Elam experienced the highenergy AMPED Conference in Atlanta. More than 600 chiropractors, staff, students and prospective students packed the hotel for a full day of inspiration and insight. Great to see LIFE alumni in action and leading the way!

FLORIDA LIFE always enjoys heading to Orlando each year to attend the National Florida Chiropractic Association’s Annual Convention. Leffard and LIFE Recruiter Lili Montoya were the faces of LIFE at our booth and for the third year LIFE hosted an after-hours event Saturday evening during the convention with more than 55 in attendance.

WISCONSIN To close off the month of August, Vice President for University Advancement Greg Harris ventured to the Badger state and met up with Drs. Eddie (’15) and Alyse Hall (’15) for lunch. Eddie is doing a great job building his business within Stucky

Chiropractic and is seeing more than 150 patients a week. Alyse is studying animal adjusting and will be finished in February 2017. The couple is working to get the younger alumni and friends in the state involved with Life University.

SOUTH CAROLINA Leffard ventured to the shore for the South Carolina Chiropractic Association’s annual convention in Myrtle Beach. LIFE alumni and friends are leading the way in South Carolina and we are excited for others to follow in their footsteps. This year, LIFE was a sponsor at the convention and hosted the Eye Opener Saturday morning in the vendor hall that everyone loved.

Life University’s sixth Fall CElebration, held Sept. 28-Oct. 2 on the Marietta campus, was a huge success. In fact, a majority of the attendees commented that the event was the best they’ve ever attended. This annual fiveday event has become one of the largest and most affordable CE events in the profession. Perhaps the best part of the weekend is the camaraderie and fellowship from friends, colleagues and fellow chiropractors that fills LIFE’s 110-acre campus. In between classes, there are a multitude of parties, luncheons and reunions for everyone’s enjoyment — and we certainly had a lot to celebrate this year. A few highlights from the weekend include: • 1,706 total participants on campus with more than 1,644 attending classes • Outstanding exhibitor hall and record participation at the Thirsty Thursday event with the exhibitors • 35 State Reps gathered for a working State Rep Breakfast • More than 400 were present at the third annual Plenary Session discussing the chiropractic profession from its inception to the challenges that exist today • Eloquent re-dedication and unveiling of the restored Lasting Purpose Pool

9

• Four campus walking tours led by Student Ambassadors highlighting how much change and progress LIFE’s beautiful campus as seen in recent years • 12 Elite 150 donors • More than 20 new LIFEforce 1000 Doctors • 21 additional student recruitment events scheduled • Seven class reunions held for the Classes of 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011 • Fall CElebration Party moved to the Lupo Family Field with more than 300 in attendance for the dedication. Special appearance of Dr. B.J. Palmer’s Cadillac and dedication cumulated to a grand fireworks display to end the evening • 150 job seekers and practices in representation for the inaugural Career Vision As always, we love providing this program to you and hope to host you again next year Sept. 27-Oct. 1, 2017! Life University also wishes to thank its 81 exhibiting organizations that made its Fall CElebration event so successful.

LASTING PURPOSE POOL RESTORED The Lasting Purpose Pool is a physical testament to Life University’s guiding principle of “Lasting Purpose: To Give, To Do, To Love, To Serve – Out of a Sense of Abundance.” During the 2016 Fall CElebration, guests joined the university Sept. 30 as representatives unveiled the recently restored pool. Originally constructed in the 1980s, time and the elements have not been kind to the physical condition of the Lasting Purpose Pool. After talk that the pool was destined to be turned into a planter, Vice President for University Advancement Greg Harris sought the help of LIFE alumni and friends to aid in the restoration of the pool to its original state. Restoration of the pool commenced in July and included adding three fountains to transform it from a non-circulating to a circulating pool.

LUPO FAMILY FIELD DEDICATION Life University’s new lower athletic field was dedicated in a ceremony during the annual Alumni & Friends Party Oct. 1. The field, Lupo Family Field, was named and dedicated in honor of lead campaign supporter Joe Lupo (’78), D.C., his wife, Sandy, and children, Jeff and Jesse. At the conclusion of the men’s soccer game, LIFE President Dr. Guy Riekeman and Dr. Lupo arrived to the field in Dr. B.J. Palmer’s Cadillac. Once on the field, Dr. Riekeman recognized the Lupo Family for their tireless leadership and support to Life University. Members of the 16 men’s and women’s sports at Life University commemorated the dedication of the field by presenting the family with game balls. Upon conclusion

of the gifts, individuals who also contributed to the completion of the field — Elite 150 and athletic field donors — raced to the field and rallied around the family. The field underwent a renovation this summer. A new turf field was installed, along with new perimeter fencing, a large scoreboard, media and coaches boxes and permanent hillside seating. The field’s durability and drainage system now allows the Running Eagles to play on a perfect field no matter the weather conditions or the amount of usage by on-campus and community sports teams.

CAMPUS LIFE

2016 Annual Recognition Awards The International Alumni Association of Life University is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2016 Annual Recognition Awards. Through their professional accomplishments and personal service, nine honorees were selected as representatives of professional success, social contribution and cultural change. These outstanding individuals were honored at the Lasting Purpose Recognition Lunch held during the 2016 Fall CElebration Event on Life University’s campus in October. This year’s recipients are: Darren A. White, D.C. (’01) Distinguished Alumnus Award Honors a LIFE alumnus who has reached the pinnacle of success in his/ her career and has brought credit to themselves and LIFE. Dr. Darren White is an exciting, young and ambitious doctor who has experienced exponential growth personally and through his vision and business, ADURO Inc. He has been the first to make a real difference in changing corporate attitudes as to what human performance and healthy workforce really means — and we aren’t the only ones to notice. This year, ADURO was recognized as one of the “Top 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies” by Inc. Magazine. Both White and ADURO have successfully integrated chiropractic philosophy into a comprehensive — and accessible — employee wellness program. Life University’s core values fuel ADURO’s vision and values, and we are pleased to honor White’s contributions to the chiropractic profession. Erik Brower, D.C. (’10) Young Alumnus Award Honors an individual who has graduated from LIFE within the past 10 years, for his/her outstanding professional achievements. Dr. Erik Brower owns and operates one of the largest neurologically based practices in New York and serves on average 1,000 patients per week. Fall 2016 | Alumni.LIFE.edu

Within six months of opening, his practice Innate Chiropractic was honored as startup business of the year. The following year, Brower was recognized as one of the rising stars in the country under the age of 40. Furthermore, he speaks nationally to thousands and serves as a mentor to many other chiropractors and students. Brower also gives back to his community as he serves as a proud board member of the local YMCA and also sits on their Program Committee. Brower has not only skillfully accomplished many outstanding professional achievements within the chiropractic arena, but he is increasing the health and well being of his community in the process. Gerard W. Clum, D.C. Honorary Alumnus Award Honors a non-LIFE alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and support for the mission and spirit of LIFE. Dr. Gerard Clum has been a guidepost for the chiropractic profession, continually defining its scope and potential with keen intelligence, flawless logic and great grace. He served as one of the original faculty members of Life Chiropractic College and went on to serve as the longest chiropractic college president in history for Life Chiropractic College West. He is the truest statesman of chiropractic the profession has ever seen, and his list of accomplishments are extensive. Most recently, in his “second act,” he serves as the director of The Octagon, as well as the director of the Center for Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics at Life University. Both seek to fulfill a vision of Life University-found president Dr. Sid Williams for chiropractic and its philosophy to do its part in emptying prisons by improving the expression of prisoners’ potential. Clum has stood on the shoulders of the giants who came before him and embodied their very best qualities to become a giant himself. Joe Lupo, D.C. (’78) Donor Legacy Award Honors an individual, couple or family who has made a significant impact to the University through their financial contributions. Dr. Joe Lupo has measured up to all the qualifications of the Donor Legacy Award. With full

CAMPUS LIFE

support of his wife, Sandy, he has contributed to Life University significantly, meaningfully and consistently over the course of the last 16 years. As an early donor to LIFE, he is one of the Michigan legends that made the first major gifts to save LIFE during the crisis. He has contributed to numerous campaigns, including making the largest gift to the Lower Athletic Field campaign and leading the Elite 150 campaign to raise the final $150,000 needed to reach the campaign goal. He has a heart of gold and through Lasting Purpose is continually bringing positive change to Life University. Amanda Apfelbalt, D.C. (’00) Volunteer Fundraiser Award Honors an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership in raising money and organizing groups of volunteers for major fundraising projects that benefit LIFE. Dr. Amanda Apfelblat holds a true passion for her alma mater and is repeatedly asking, “Why isn’t everyone giving?” She understands and supports the greater mission of the University and leads her peers by example. As a result, she successfully made her second five-figure gift to Life University and nearly tripled her personal giving last year by securing gifts from a few other individuals, including a couple of new donors. Apfelblat is also seeking to build a new generation of chiropractic leaders in her home state of Michigan. She is instilling her giving spirit in each person she encounters and we couldn’t be more proud. Philip Day, D.C. (’86) Lasting Purpose: To Love Award Honors an individual who exemplifies his/her love and pride for LIFE. Dr. Philip Day has shared his love for Life University even when it was a lone voice among his association peers. In fact, it was his voice, both then and now, that has aided in establishing LIFE’s fourth state partnership with the Georgia Chiropractic Association. His alumni pride is displayed at LIFE events and by his active promoting of LIFE within the workplace, community and professional associations through social media and community dialogues. He also oversees 12 states in the U.S. for the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations.

15

Karen Mathiak, D.C. (’84) Lasting Purpose: To Serve Award Honors an individual who humbly supports and bolsters LIFE through their service. Dr. Karen Mathiak has been a beacon for Life University through her commitment to years of service within the community and the chiropractic profession. Whether volunteering in her local community, holding leadership roles in the Georgia Chiropractic Association or her latest accomplishment of running against a long-term politician and winning, thereby, becoming the first chiropractor in the Georgia legislature, Mathiak is truly a role model for compassion and service and is inspiring her peers to take action, too. Leana Kart, D.C. (’87) Lasting Purpose: To Give Award Honors an individual who has demonstrated a notable increase in giving or an expansion of their giving. There’s no question that Dr. Leana Kart is passionate about chiropractic and Life University. In Fiscal Year 2016, she and her husband increased their giving to LIFE by 900 percent. In addition, they both expanded their generosity by donating a sizeable contribution to another organization important to LIFE when asked. We are proud to recognize her generosity, support and friendship as she personifies “To Give” through and through. Casen DeMaria, D.C. (’11) and Anthony DeMaria, D.C. (’11) State Representative Award Honors state representatives who actively engage, educate and reconnect their state alumni and friends to LIFE. Ohio State Representatives Drs. Casen and Anthony DeMaria are actively engaging, educating and reconnecting their state alumni and friends to Life University. As our first husband and wife team to receive this award, they are role models for our state partnerships and serve as Buckeyes for LIFE mentors. In addition, the DeMaria’s enthusiastically serve as LIFE ambassadors to almost 2,000 chiropractors in Ohio, while simultaneously carrying on the legacy of the drugless doctors.

The deadline for nominating alumni for the 2017 Annual Recognition Awards is Aug. 15, 2017. Please submit nominations online at Alumni.LIFE.edu/Awards. Alumni.LIFE.edu | Fall 2016

Lights of LIFE was introduced by Life University in 1989 as a gift to the local community. Talk of the Lights of LIFE spread quickly, given the location, quality and low cost. As the most affordable holiday light show in the Southeast, the Lights of LIFE holiday light display has become a yearly tradition. Now nearly half a million spectators from the surrounding region cruise through the spectacularly illuminated campus annually! New displays are added, and the entire arrangement is unique each year. The 65 foot tall rendition of Santa and his sleigh is the tallest display in the Southeast.

Keep in Touch with

1980s Dr. Ken Osia (’82) of St. Louis, Missouri, is our new reunion co-chair for his 35th reunion in 2017. Osia has been practicing in the St. Louis area since graduation and has participated in a variety of professional organizations, such as the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, American Chiropractic Association and Missouri State Chiropractors Association. We are excited to have his participation as a co-chair and look forward to a successful reunion next year! Dr. Keith Pruitt (’82) was elected and will began a two-year term in November to the Office of the President of the Board of Directors to Georgia Highlands Medical Services Inc., a federally funded community health center serving the north Metro Atlanta. Pruitt maintains his private practice Pruitt Chiropractic Clinic in Canton, Georgia, where he has been serving the community for almost 35 years. Dr. Karen Mathiak (’84) is the new representative for State House District 73 in Griffin, Georgia. Her opponent had previously held the seat for 23 years. Mathiak has always had an interest in politics and decided it was time for a fresher voice, so she decided to run for office. In May, Mathiak convinced

enough voters it was time for a change that there was a runoff. Her platform is focused on economy, particularly in the southside of Atlanta, as well as education. She also hopes to educate people on Chiropractic.

Dr. Joe Baudille (’85) was awarded Chiropractor of the Year from the New York Chiropractic Council in October. Baduille has been in private practice for the past 31 years at Dyker Heights Family Chiropractor in Brooklyn, New York. He currently serves as an Executive Offer for The Council. Gary Lett (’86) has a lot of great things going on in his life. Since moving to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, he has been involved in various local civic organizations and sports programs using the “whole person approach” within his chiropractic practice. From now until December, he will remain busy as he pro-

vides chiropractic services to football players, while he anticipates another great trip to an NCAA college football bowl game. He has participated in organized sports from childhood throughout his collegiate career, including golf and football, as he is also a member of the American Chiropractic Association, Mississippi Chiropractic Association (VP) and has published numerous chiropractic, health and golf-related articles. Lett also had the pleasure of meeting Tori Bowie on the U.S. Track and Field Olympic team. It must be exciting and rewarding to be involved! Dr. Ken George (’88) treated his 10,000th patient at the end of October! George maintains his private practice Dr. Ken George & Associates P.A. in Stratham, New Hampshire. He is a published author of more than 200 articles on various holistic health topics, producer and host of his own radio talk show, “Inside Health,” and writer, producer and director of the television video, “The Power that Made the Body Is the Power that Will Heal the Body.”

1990s Dr. Joseph Foley (’90) of Salem, Virginia, was named the Unified Virginia Chiropractic Association’s Chiropractor of the Year at its fall convention Sept. 24, 2016. Foley and his wife, Dr. Diana DeReu-Foley, have been caring for the people of Roanoke Valley for more than 16 years. He is a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and was also voted Best Chiropractor for 2016 by readers of So Salem. Alumni.LIFE.edu | Fall 2016

ALUMNI AND FRIENDS UPDATE

Congratulations, Dr. Tara Layne (’10) of Newberry, South Carolina! She was randomly selected to win a customized drop table. Find us at an upcoming event or convention for your chance to win — we draw twice a year.

Dr. Jay LaGuardia (’90) was voted Chiropractor of the Year for the Chiropractic Society of Wisconsin (CSW) at its annual fall summit in October. LaGuardia has served on the boards of many different organizations and businesses throughout the years. These experiences eventually led him to serve as president of CSW. Now, he serves as immediate past president. He is pictured with his daughter, Dr. Alyse LaGuardia Hall (’15). Bob Hayden (’95) is an active member of the American Chiropractic Association. He serves as a member of the media team, through which he is a spokesman for the association on television, radio and print media. He was inducted in 2009 as a fellow of the International College of Chiropractic, which is the highest international honor the chiropractic profession has to offer. Hayden returned to campus July 21 to speak to a student group — the State Networking Association. As a representative of our partnership with the Georgia Chiropractic Association (GA4LIFE), Hayden gave students insider’s advice and tips for success after graduation. Dr. Marc Rogers (’99) is eagerly awaiting the opening of his new business, Brooklyn Pizza Company in Largo, Florida. Rogers has been making pizza since he was 17 and opening his own restaurant has been a huge dream. We wish him luck in his new endeavor and invite any alumni and friends in the area to stop by and support him.

so elegantly states, “the athletes do not have big resources, but they have big hearts and are family,” she is truly honored to be a part of such an amazing team. She is currently working with SportTV (Brazil’s ESPN) on a documentary with Castro, capturing a soft tissue technique she utilized on nine NFL players last season. This technique showed results as three of the nine NFL players had the best season of their careers. Following graduation, Steil dealt with the loss of accreditation, but while taking her board exams she decided to open a temporary soft tissue practice working with only athletes. Steil shares, “All the conditions Dr. Fox (professor at Life University) said you would treat have walked through our doors and then some.” She is forever grateful for the education and opportunities provided to her.

Dr. Josh Wagner (’10) had an article recently published in The American Chiropractor — “Your Staff Stress Solution – 4 Principles to Ensure Healthy Staff Success” (July 2016). Wagner shares his thoughts indicating “Your CA and staff really are your practice’s biggest asset.” He quickly touches on principles regarding hiring on character versus experience identifying that “anyone who passes your staff’s test can then meet you” and “does he or she make patients smile with conversations.” The article discusses win-win situations regarding bonus structure and scheduling with shared techniques to avoid burnout to include suggestions on ensuring clarity and direction are clearly

understood between DCs and their staff. Wagner affirms, “real, open communication between everyone in your practice creates an environment for growth, ease and increased results.”

The whole time, she never ditched class. She never complained.” White’s inspiring attitude was “This is my life. I’m going to do this!”

Dr. Tim Smith (’13) of Buford, Georgia, was selected to support members of USA Wrestling as they went for gold in Rio. Under the care of Maximized Living doctors at the London Olympics in 2012, U.S. wrestlers won four medals, including two golds. Congratulations to the following alumni and friends who received awards and recognition at July’s LIFE Vision Seminar Event: Drs. He is survived by his only child, Katrina Theresa Marion Dougherty. Dr. Stephen “Steve” Jack Lemley (’90), 65, passed away peacefully July 16 while being lovingly cared for by his devoted wife Dee. Following graduation, his family moved back to Lake City, Florida, where he began practice in 1990. He opened his own practice in 1993 and spent the next 16 years

Dr. Kerry White (’14) passed away May 24 following her courageous battle with cancer. She played shortstop for the Dayton Flyers from 1998-2002. White was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in July 2012. In March 2014, doctors discovered the cancer spread to her brain and soon thereafter throughout her body. During her battle with cancer, White earned a Doctor of Chiropractic from Life University, where she befriended Eryn Eberlein. “I don’t even know how to explain somebody like her,” Eberlein said. “She went

Life University’s Professional Online Directory! The Alumni Relations Department has an online directory to help you market your services in your area. We get callers every day looking for a LIFE chiropractor in a particular city. Now we can point callers to the directory to help you increase your business. The directory provides an easy-to-use tool that features listings based on city, state and zip code. In addition, the public can also locate an individual based on their profession, techniques, therapies or patient education. Do you want to be included? Update or include your personal information by visiting our website at Alumni.LIFE.edu/register. Please note: you must be logged into the Alumni & Friends website to be able to complete this action.
