Les ateliers-résidences, laboratoire et lieu d’expérimentation, affichent l’ambition de s’inscrire dans un réseau international d’échange. Cette publication témoigne du sixième cycle d’accueil d’artistes aux RAVI.

Cette publication constitue le catalogue de la saison 2017-2018 des Résidences-Ateliers Vivegnis International.

La sélection de ces artistes est le résultat d’un appel international qui débouche sur le dépôt de près de 120 candidatures avant l’examen du comité artistique.

Les membres de ce comité ont balisé de leurs réflexions, de leurs suggestions et de leurs critiques constructives le cheminement d’une infrastructure qui gagne en crédibilité et en notoriété sur la scène internationale.

A cet égard, la lecture, dans cette brochure, du parcours des «anciens» résidents après leur passage en nos murs apporte une précieuse indication sur la qualité des postulants.

En effet, au-delà de l’accueil, il s’agissait d’offrir à chaque résident les conditions qui permettent effectivement de satisfaire aux exigences du projet artistique.

Des collaborations s’installent, se dessinent avec des écoles relevant de l’enseignement supérieur dans la fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. A l’occasion de la Biennale de l’image possible, une artiste-résidente a noué lien avec un homologue fréquentant le Créahm pour accoucher d’une réalisation séduisante.

La porte s’ouvre aussi à la bibliothèque du quartier engagée dans un programme européen qui aboutira à un nouveau profil de résident. C’est donc d’une dynamique qui ne connait pas le repos dont il est question dans ce catalogue.

The workshop residences are both a laboratory for research and a place of experimentation. Their ambition is to form part of an international exchange network. This publication gives an account of the sixth cycle of artists to be received at RAVI. These artists are selected following an international tender, producing around 120 applications that are then examined by the artistic committee.

By their thoughts, their suggestions and their constructive criticism, the committee members have marked out the path of an infrastructure that is gaining credibility and repute on the international scene.

In this regard, reading in this brochure the track record of the “old” residents after passing through our walls provides a valuable indication of the quality of the postulants.

Indeed, the challenge was not only to host these artists but also to offer each resident the conditions that effectively meet the requirements of their respective artistic project.

Collaborations are being established and planned with schools of higher education in the WalloniaBrussels Federation. On the occasion of the Bienniale de l’Image Possible, a resident artist created a link with a counterpart attending the Créahm, giving rise to an attractive achievement.

The door also opens at the neighbourh ood library engaged in a European programme that will result in a new resident profile. Thus this catalogue deals with an irresistible impetus of forward movement.

Le site “Vivegnis” Les Résidences-Ateliers Vivegnis International (RAVI) s’intègrent au programme du pôle artistique que la Ville de Liège soutient depuis plusieurs années dans le quartier Saint-Léonard. Il s’agit de valoriser tout un territoire en exploitant son potentiel en termes de « métiers des arts », dont attestent l’importance des associations culturelles qui s’y trouvent implantées et le nombre croissant de créateurs qui y vivent ou y travaillent.

Le choix du site « Vivegnis » en tant que centre de cette dynamique s’est imposé naturellement : aujourd’hui devenu emblématique du redéploiement de la Cité ardente, ce périmètre autrefois dévolu à l’activité minière combine en effet du logement, des espaces publics de qualité et la présence d’opérateurs actifs dans les secteurs tant économiques qu’artistiques.

Les RAVI associent des habitations en appartements neufs et des ateliers aménagés dans un bâtiment industriel qui s’intégrait aux installations du charbonnage Bonne Espérance/Batterie dont une partie est occupée depuis 1983 par Espace 251 Nord.

La réaffectation s’inscrit dans une volonté de respecter le sens du bâtiment historique. C’est sensible dans la distribution intérieure qui respecte la logique de l’architecture en place : ainsi, le volume à toiture plate en façade avant et jadis destiné à de l’administration accueille des bureaux et une cafétéria ; alors que les anciennes salles de travail qui s’élèvent sur deux niveaux abritent les ateliers d’artistes, un local polyvalent et des cellules de stockage. La transformation en plateforme de leur toiture à l’origine à redents partiels permet non seulement d’agrandir le volume intérieur mais également d’affirmer la nouvelle identité du lieu, ce à quoi participe encore l’ajout d’une coursive extérieure qui règle la circulation horizontale et permet de ne pas amputer le premier étage d’un couloir de distribution.

Le fonctionnement L’association sans but lucratif « Les manifestations liégeoises » a été désignée en tant qu’opérateur principal. En accord avec la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles qui délivre une subvention de fonctionnement et la Ville de Liège qui met à disposition les infrastructures, du personnel et l’appui de ses services techniques, les objectifs se concentrent sur la définition d’une plateforme d’expérimentation, d’approfondissement et de professionnalisation pour le travail des artistes plasticiens. La mise en œuvre du programme est soutenue par un comité artistique composé d’opérateurs culturels, de représentants des autorités communales et communautaires. Le rôle du comité consiste principalement en la désignation des résidents. Il intervient également dans l’accompagnement de ces derniers, notamment pour les orienter vers les professionnels du secteur. Pour remplir la capacité d’accueil annuelle de 12 artistes en résidence pendant 3 mois, la sélection s’effectue sur invitation, sur proposition d’institutions actives dans le domaine de l’art contemporain et, majoritairement, sur base d’un dossier de candidature suivant le lancement d’appels à projet.

Elle accorde une place prépondérante à l’international mais réserve également un tiers des disponibilités à des ressortissants de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

Depuis son ouverture, la résidence a accueilli une nonantaine d’artistes, de nationalités variées (Allemagne, Canada, Espagne, Finlande, Inde, Italie, Mexique …).

En plus d’un logement et d’un atelier, ils bénéficient d’une bourse et de l’appui d’une structure de gestion opérationnelle. Outre la gestion des appels à projet, cette structure travaille à la mise en place pratique des résidences (installation dans les appartements et ateliers, soutien technique, rencontre avec les habitants, interface avec les services communaux…) et à l’établissement de partenariats. C’est aussi elle qui prend en charge la médiatisation, la publication des résultats et l’organisation des portes ouvertes qui clôturent les séjours.

Ambitions et perspectives Creuser le sillon des aventures entamées assurant la pérennité de ce projet qui ne cesse de gagner en audience tant en fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles qu’à l’étranger.

The choice of the “Vivegnis” site as the centre of this dynamic project took shape naturally: this area has become emblematic of the redevelopment of the “Cité ardente” (“the Burning City”), which was formerly devoted to mining, and today combines housing with quality public areas and the presence of active operators in the economic and artistic sectors.

Les artistes accueillis en résidence voient leur démarche décrite dans une publication annuelle diffusée en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles mais aussi plus largement dans les pays limitrophes auprès d’opérateurs du secteur des arts plastiques.

Récemment, se sont ajoutées les différentes ambassades présentes en Belgique ainsi que le corps consulaire de la Province de Liège dans la liste de diffusion. Le réseau des villes jumelles de la Ville de Liège peut offrir des opportunités de relation de projet.

Les RAVI prennent la forme d’un produit d’appel à une coopération ponctuelle ou plus large dans un processus tel que celui des capitales européennes de la culture.

The origins RAVI associates housing in new flats with workshops in an industrial building that formerly formed part of the Bonne Esperance / Battery coal works, part of which has been occupied since 1983 by Espace 251 Nord.

This reallocation is part of a desire to respect the meaning of the historic building. It is sensitive in the interior distribution, respecting the logic of the existing architecture. Hence the flat-roofed volume in the front, which was formerly intended for administrative offices, now hosts offices and a cafeteria, while the old two-level workrooms now house the artists’ studios, a multi-purpose room and storage cubicles.

The transformation of their roof, which originally had partial redans, into a platform, not only enlarges the interior volume but also asserts the new identity of the place, and this is also contributed to by the addition of an external corridor that regulates horizontal circulation while not depriving the first floor of a distribution passage.

The way it works The non-profit association “Les manifestations liégeoises” has been designated as the main operator.

In agreement with the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, which issues an operating grant, and the City of Liege, which provides infrastructure, staff and the support of its technical services, the objectives focus on defining a platform for experimentation and for the more detailed and professional work of visual artists. An artistic committee composed of cultural operators and representatives of the communal and community authorities supports programme implementation. The role of the committee is primarily to designate the residents. It is also involved in coaching them, and particularly in guiding them towards professionals in the sector. To fill the annual capacity of 12 artists in residence for 3 months, selection is made by invitation, based on the proposals of institutions that are active in the field of contemporary art, but mainly on the basis of an application file following the launch of a tender for projects. It gives a prominent place to the international dimension but also reserves a third of the places available to locals RAVI catalogue 2017-2018

Aux origines

The “Vivegnis” site The Résidences-Ateliers Vivegnis International (Vivegnis International Residencies and Workshops - RAVI) are part of the artistic programme that the City of Liege has been supporting for several years in the Saint-Léonard neighbourhood. The aim is to promote an entire territory by exploiting its potential in terms of “arts and crafts”, which is evidenced by the importance of the cultural associations found there and the growing number of creators who live or work there.

from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Since its opening, the residence has welcomed around ninety artists of various nationalities (Germany, Canada, Spain, Finland, India, Italy, Mexico etc.). In addition to housing and a workshop, they receive a scholarship and support from an operational management structure. Beyond managing the progress of the project tender process, this structure works on the practical implementation of residences (installing the artists in flats and workshops, technical support, meeting with residents, interface with municipal services etc.) and establishing partnerships. It also deals with PR, publication of the results and the organisation of open days at the end of the residencies.

Ambitions and perspectives These involve consolidating the adventures begun in order to ensure the sustainability of this project, which in the meantime is attracting increasing interest both in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and from abroad.

Les artistes eux-mêmes deviennent des ambassadeurs du projet par la mention de leur séjour à Liège dans leur CV. Les RAVI prennent le chemin d’un label dans l’écosystème international des arts plastiques. Par ailleurs, les relations de projet avec diverses écoles se sont poursuivies. L’Ecole supérieure des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Liège et la Cambre ont invité les résidents des RAVI et leur coordinatrice à expliquer leur travail aux étudiants à l’occasion d’un workshop qui s’articulait autour d’une conférence de Peter Morrens.

On retrouvera d’autres illustrations de l’approfondissement de cette importante dimension de l’activité des RAVI notamment par le croisement du travail des étudiants de l’IHECS avec la Biennale de l’Image Possible.

En outre, le contact avec les galeries se naturalise au cœur des RAVI. La mise en lumière de ces centres d’art à l’occasion de l’opération «en Piste !» conforte un cadre de coopération qui gagne en ampleur par le nombre d’interactions et en qualité.

Enfin, en 2016, une nouvelle bibliothèque communale ouvrait ses portes place Vivegnis adossée au pôle d’art contemporain «Résidences Ateliers Vivegnis International». RAVI s’invite dans une dynamique de projet européen (N-Power) sur ce quartier. L’enjeu vise la réduction de la fracture sociale pour créer plus de mixité et d’échanges, et à donner corps collectivement aux intentions citoyennes qui ont émergé des dynamiques participatives en cours autour de la nouvelle bibliothèque.

Que viennent faire les Ravi dans cette opération ? Ils s’ouvrent à l’accueil d’un collectif d’intervenants qui développeront un dispositif de médiation intégrant la participation des artistes accueillis en résidence.

En conclusion, le processus RAVI emporte une volonté de créer les meilleures conditions d’accueil pour les artistes sélectionnés par un jury désormais présidé par Pierre Henrion.

La question de la valorisation de leur travail a toujours taraudé la ville. Aussi, l’élargissement régulier du réseau des galeries et centres d’art à l’affût d’un talent insolite contribue indéniablement à faciliter la diffusion du travail des artiste-résidents. Il reste cependant à formaliser davantage l’installation des RAVI dans un plus vaste réseau de structures du même type notamment en direction de la France.

The artists in residence hosted here have their approach described in an annual publication distributed in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation but also more widely in the bordering countries with operators in the visual arts sector. Recently, the various embassies present in Belgium and the consular corps of the Province of Liege have been added to the mailing list. The twin cities network of the City of Liege can offer related project opportunities. RAVI takes the form of a product calling for occasional or wider cooperation in a process such as the European Capitals of Culture. The artists themselves become ambassadors of the project by mentioning their stay in Liege in their CV. RAVI is moving towards becoming a label in the international visual arts ecosystem.

In addition, project relations with various higher education establishments have continued. The Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Liège et la Cambre (The Fine Arts Colleges of the City of Liege and Cambre) invited the RAVI residents and their coordinator to explain their work to the students on the occasion of a workshop organised around a conference by Peter Morrens. Other illustrations showing the development of this important dimension of the activity of RAVI will be found, in particular, in the crossing of the work of IHECS students with the Biennale de l'Image Possible.

Furthermore, contact with galleries is naturalised within RAVI. The highlighting of these art centres on the occasion of the operation “On Track!” reinforces a cooperation framework that is gaining momentum and quality through a number of interactions.

Finally, in 2016, a new communal library opened its doors on Place Vivegnis, backed by the “Résidences Ateliers Vivegnis International” pole of contemporary art. RAVI has invited itself into a dynamic European project (N-Power) for this district. The challenge is to reduce the social divide to create more diversity and exchange, and to give a collective voice to the citizens’ intentions that have emerged from the ongoing participatory dynamics around the new library.

What is RAVI doing in this operation? It is opening up to the reception of a group of stakeholders who will develop a mediation system integrating the participation of the artists hosted in residence.

In conclusion, the RAVI process involves a desire to create the best conditions in order to receive the artists who are selected by a jury now chaired by Pierre Henrion. The question of valorising their work has always been of central concern to the city. Also, the regular expansion of the network of galleries and art centres on the lookout for unusual talent undeniably contributes to facilitating the dissemination of the work of the artists in residence. However, the installation of RAVI still needs to be formalised within a wider network of structures of the same type, particularly in the direction of France.

La cristallisation est un des points de départ de la recherche plastique réalisée par Sarah Caillard au cours de sa résidence aux RAVI. Ce phénomène amoureux particulier est décrit et analysé par Stendhal dans «le rameau de Salzbourg», tiré de De l’amour. Pour l’auteur, la cristallisation est le sentiment amoureux qui provoque l’idéalisation de l’être aimé. Il conte ainsi l’histoire de sa visite des mines de sel de Salzbourg avec Madame Gherardi. Au cours de cette visite, Stendhal remarque que l’officier qui les accompagne s’éprend de Madame Gherardi. Progressivement, celui-ci lui trouve de multiples qualités et perfections que l’auteur lui-même ne remarque pas. Analysant ce phénomène, il le compare à un rameau d’olivier plongé dans la mine de sel. Petit à petit, le rameau se cristallise et ressort recouvert de diamants étincelants au point de ne plus laisser apparaître les branches telles qu’elles sont.

Crystallisation is one of the starting points of the plastic research conducted by Sarah Caillard during her residency at RAVI. This particular amorous phenomenon is described and analysed by Stendhal in the “Salzburg branch”, taken from De l’amour (On Love). For the author, crystallisation is the amorous feeling that provokes idealisation of the beloved. He tells the story of his visit to the Salzburg salt mines with Mrs. Gherardi. During this visit, Stendhal notices that the officer accompanying them falls for Madame Gherardi. Gradually, he finds in her multiple qualities and perfections that the author himself does not notice. Analysing this phenomenon, he compares it to an olive branch immersed in the salt mine. Little by little, the branch crystallises and comes out covered with sparkling diamonds to the point of no longer letting the branches appear as they are.

Nonante-et-une nuits mêle à la fois l’histoire de Stendhal et celle des Mille et Une Nuits, l’artiste cherchant à travers elles une invariance symbolique.

Nonante-et-une nuits (Ninety and One Nights) combines Stendhal’s story with that of the Thousand and One Nights, seeking through them a symbolic invariance. During these ninety-and-one nights, plastic stories are told about love, crystallisation, arguing etc. In the form of installations and drawings, Sarah Caillard invites us to look into this amorous phenomenon that is common to all cultures. The meeting of Eros and Psyche unfolds in reflective, dazzling brilliance. A light, transparent, floating carpet transcends the presence of Aladdin. The paraffin spreads and freezes on the floor in La dispute (The Argument).

As for crystallisation, it takes place before our eyes, linking each of the nine elements of the installation with the same name.

Nonante-et-une nuits durant lesquelles sont contés des récits plastiques autour de l’amour, de la cristallisation, de la dispute… Sous la forme d’installations et de dessins, Sarah Caillard invite ainsi à se pencher sur ce phénomène amoureux commun à toutes les cultures. La rencontre d’Eros et Psyché se déroule dans un éclat réfléchissant, éblouissant. Un tapis léger, transparent, flottant transcende la présence d’Aladin. La paraffine s’étale et se fige sur le sol dans La dispute. Quant à la cristallisation, elle s’opère sous nos yeux, liant chacun des neuf éléments de l’installation du même titre.

Employant paraffine, fibre de verre, béton, Sarah Caillard les transfigure pour fixer son imaginaire où s’influencent littérature, théâtre, cinéma. Se réappropriant l’analyse de Stendhal, elle revisite ici la notion même de cristallisation pour proposer une nouvelle version plastique de la transfiguration amoureuse.

Employing paraffin, fibreglass and concrete, Sarah Caillard transfigures them to fix her imagination where literature, theatre and cinema influence each other. Re-appropriating Stendhal’s analysis, she revisits the very notion of crystallisation here to propose a new plastic version of amorous transfiguration.

Jonathan De Winter a principalement consacré sa résidence aux RAVI à la production de son exposition personnelle à la Galerie Central (Liège) au printemps 2017.

Les séries qu’il a développées sont marquées par une valeur expérimentale. «Ma résidence de trois mois a été pour moi un véritable laboratoire pour tester des solutions jusqu’ici peu actives dans ma pratique. Les pièces que j’ai mises au point depuis 7 ans sont souvent envisagées tant comme des sculptures indépendantes que comme des vecteurs pour la prestation de musiciens avec l’intention d’associer volumes physiques et sonores. Aux RAVI, j’ai fabriqué des grandes structures noires sans nécessairement prévoir qu’elles doivent être activées par une performance. Le caractère d’accessoire que certains de mes travaux ont pu avoir est ici totalement absent. J’ai bien conçu des interventions : à la présentation de l’ensemble à la Galerie Central, j’ai donné un prolongement à mon projet NOISE avec une performance intitulée Suiker – Zucker ; il y avait un crieur, un bassiste ‘enragé’ et moimême sur un échafaudage amplifié ; ma présence à ce stade de la ‘vie’ d’une installation est aussi quelque chose de nouveau.»

Jonathan De Winter devoted his residence at RAVI mainly to producing his personal exhibition at the à Galerie Central (Liège) (Liege Central Gallery) in spring 2017.

The series he has developed are marked by their experimental value. “My three-month residency was a real laboratory for me to test solutions that have so far not been very active in my practice. The pieces I have been developing for 7 years are often intended to be both independent sculptures and vectors for the performance of musicians with the intention of combining physical and sound volumes. At RAVI, I made large black structures without necessarily planning that they must be activated by a performance. The accessory character that some of my works have had is here totally absent. I did design interventions: at the presentation of all the works at the Central Gallery, I gave an extension to my NOISE project with a performance entitled Suiker - Zucker; there was a crier, an ‘enraged’ bass player and myself on an amplified scaffold; my presence at this stage of the ‘life’ of an installation was also something new.”

Whereas the wood volumes covered with black matter share a status – operating between painting, sculpture, installation and area of temporary performances – with the rest of the work, they certainly acquire a more autonomous presence than usual.

And, in the first analysis, there would appear to be a very classical weight in the proposition marked by the sensitivity of the geometry of the pieces, the use of tar and the gestuality of its application, which translate the energy that is common to most of Jonathan De Winter's works. But we must go further. There is a very broad spectrum of references.

The artist himself acknowledges this by revealing that he plans a “scenography in relation to chaos, a fascination with the aesthetics of the end of the world and also a reference to the techniques of construction sites, especially those of roofers, clearly evoked by the tar that protects the wooden sculptures.”

It is especially in his research to switch the highly organised codes related to purely plastic choices that this group of works is distinguished. De Winter is studying the impact of the suspension of volumes, mounting them on to a stretcher or table legs, and applying angles and handles evocative of flight-case woodwork for musical instruments.

Si les volumes en bois recouverts de matière noire partagent avec le reste de l’œuvre un statut opérant entre peinture, sculpture, installation et zone de performances temporaires, ils acquièrent bien une présence plus autonome qu’à l’habitude. Et, il y aurait en première analyse une charge très classique dans la proposition marquée par la sensibilité de la géométrie des pièces, l’emploi du goudron et la gestualité de sa pose qui traduisent l’énergie commune à la plupart des travaux de Jonathan De Winter. Mais il faut aller plus loin. Il y a un spectre de références très large. L’artiste le reconnaît lui-même en relevant qu’il prévoit une «scénographie en relation avec le chaos, une fascination pour l’esthétique de fin du monde et par ailleurs un renvoi aux techniques des chantiers de construction, en particulier celles des couvreurs clairement évoquées par le goudron qui protège les sculptures en bois.»

C’est surtout dans ses recherches pour faire basculer les codes très organisés liés aux choix purement plastiques que l’ensemble se distingue. De Winter étudie l’impact de la suspension des volumes, de leur montage sur une civière ou sur des pieds de table, de l’application de cornières et de poignées évocatrices de la menuiserie des fly-case pour instruments de musique.

«Parler du temps. D’un temps passé parallèle au mien. Celui qui appartient aux autres, aux murs, aux rideaux. Je le découvre parmi les matériaux que mon corps reconnait et que mes doigts comprennent. Tisser un territoire métaphysique commun qui relierait cette multitude de passés. Construire une histoire en recomposant les fragments de tissus et d’objets chargés d’histoires et de temps (…)»1. Ces fragments qui nous constituent, c’est une histoire croisée qui se transforme au cours d’un long processus mis en place par Jot Fau. C’est l’histoire d’une rencontre avec et entre différents tissus que l’artiste côtoie et redécouvre jour après jour.

Plutôt «trouveuse» que chercheuse, l’artiste constitue sa collection de matériaux «marginalisés», ayant tous vécu une première vie avant d’être embarqués par elle. Si tout élément est susceptible d’incorporer cette collection particulière, Jot Fau s’est concentrée instinctivement durant sa résidence sur la collecte de textiles. Ces derniers sont présents en filigrane dans tout son œuvre, y prenant part sous la forme de sculptures, installations ou vêtements qu’elle confectionne sur mesure. Un rapport intime avec le matériau prédomine dans le travail car l’artiste prend le temps : celui de le découvrir, le côtoyer et le laisser vivre dans un même espace, celui de le toucher, le manipuler et l’habiter, celui de l’assembler puis le déconstruire, afin d’entamer petit à petit sa métamorphose.

De cette rencontre avec les textiles naissent des interventions artistiques dans lesquelles la dimension corporelle et sensuelle est prédominante. Les teintes roses et brunes dévoilées par hasard participent de cette impression. Le tissu devient peau.

Il nous recouvre, il nous protège, nous l’habitons. Comme elle, il possède de multiples imperfections que l’artiste révèle. Ainsi les traces de la vie passée nourrissent le geste. Quelques mots brodés, des «mots muqueuses», s’insinuent délicatement dans certaines surfaces et déploient le sens. L’eau de la bouche coule d’une céramique et se propage dans l’espace comme une source naturelle. Rien à dire – tout à panser couvre les plaies, les trous, les traces pour mieux les apprivoiser.

Trace de vie, recouvrement, intimité, métamorphose sont autant de préoccupations que partagent toutes les œuvres de Jot Fau. «Creuser dans une seule montagne», voilà comment l’artiste décrit son travail. Chaque intervention plastique est partie intégrante d’une seule et même entité. Peu importe le médium utilisé, ce sont tous ces fragments qui constituent son œuvre.

"I talk about time, about a time spent parallel to mine, the time that belongs to others, to walls, to curtains. I discover it among the materials that my body recognises and that my fingers understand. I weave a common metaphysical territory to connect this multitude of past times. I build a story by recomposing fragments of fabrics and objects full of history and time (...)1". These fragments that constitute us represent a mutual history that is transformed during a long process set up by Jot Fau. It is the story of an encounter with and between different fabrics that the artist encounters and rediscovers day after day.

More of a “finder” than a seeker, the artist constitutes her collection of “marginalised” materials, all of which lived a first life before she took them on board.

Although any element could become part of this particular collection, Jot Fau instinctively concentrated on collecting textiles during her residency. The latter are present in filigree throughout her work, participating in it in the form of sculptures, installations or clothing specially made to measure by her. An intimate relationship with the material predominates in her work because the artist takes her time to discover it, rub shoulders with it and let it live in the same space, to touch it, manipulate it and inhabit it, to assemble it and then to deconstruct it, in order gradually to begin its metamorphosis.

This encounter with textiles engenders artistic interventions in which the body and the sensual dimension are predominant. The pink and brown shades unveiled by chance are part of this impression. The fabric becomes skin. It covers us, it protects us and we inhabit it. Like skin, it has multiple imperfections that the artist reveals. Thus the traces of the past life contribute to the gesture. Some embroidered words, “mucous words”, delicately creep into certain surfaces and spread the meaning. L’eau de la bouche (“The water of the mouth”) flows from a ceramic vessel and spreads in space like a natural source. Rien à dire – tout à panser (“Nothing to say – everything to be dressed” … a play on words between “panser”: to dress a wound, and “penser”: to think) covers wounds, holes and traces the better to tame them.

Trace of life, recovery, intimacy and metamorphosis are as many concerns shared by all the works of Jot Fau. “Digging in a single mountain” is how the artist describes her work. Each plastic intervention is an integral part of one and the same entity. Whatever medium is used, all these fragments constitute her work.

L’œuvre de Samuel Trenquier plonge le «regardeur» dans une forêt dense, qui pourrait se situer sur une de ces îles désertes tout droit sorties du roman de Michel Tournier, «Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique». Ce n’est pourtant pas une forêt comme les autres : un enchevêtrement de formes tantôt naturelles, tantôt culturelles y remplace faune et flore habituelles – sans toutefois les faire totalement disparaître.

Voyageant d’une œuvre à l’autre, elles communiquent entre elles dans un langage qui nous semble incompréhensible d’un seul regard. Ainsi se crée un répertoire formel d’un étrange exotisme. Un répertoire dans lequel l’œil peut se perdre facilement…

The works of Samuel Trenquier plunge the viewer into a dense forest, which could be located on a desert island straight out of Michel Tournier’s novel Friday, or, The Other Island. However, it is not just an ordinary forest: an entanglement of forms that are sometimes natural, sometimes cultural, replaces the usual fauna and flora here without, however, causing them to completely disappear. Travelling from one work to another, they communicate with each other in a language that seems incomprehensible to us in a single glance, thus creating a strangely exotic formal repertoire, in which one’s eye can easily get lost!

L’apparent désordre provoqué par cette profusion n’est qu’un leurre. Tout est au contraire précisément à sa place dans ces grandes compositions réalisées à la gouache. Car, tel un oiseau jardinier, Samuel Trenquier installe patiemment son décor. Comme ces passereaux australiens, il emprunte formes et couleurs dans son environnement proche (nature, ville, atelier d’animation, rencontres) et les assemble afin de construire une scénographie riche qui séduira l’œil. Dans cette forêt, il n’est pas rare de croiser un soldat de plomb trouvé sur la brocante de Saint-Pholien, une structure de colombages inspirée des maisons liégeoises, un éléphant aux traits enfantins, des fleurs stylisées ou encore un ballon de basket. Chaque forme généreuse et universelle se superpose, se rencontre, se répond, transformant l’ensemble en une sorte de bande dessinée en continu, nouvelle interprétation d’un exotisme à la fois lointain et proche.

The apparent disorder caused by this profusion is only a decoy. On the contrary, everything is precisely in its place in these large gouache compositions because, like a bowerbird, Samuel Trenquier patiently installs his decor. Like Australian passerines, he borrows forms and colours from his immediate environment (nature, city, animation studio, meetings) and assembles them to build a rich scenography to seduce the eye. In this forest, it is not uncommon to meet a lead soldier found on the flea market of Saint Pholien, a half-timbered structure inspired by Liege houses, an elephant with childish features, stylised flowers or a basketball. Each generous and universal form is superimposed, meets and replies, transforming the whole into a sort of continuous comic strip, a new interpretation of an exoticism both distant and near.

Happé par ce décor étrange, le spectateur est entrainé au sein d’un véritable «safari visuel» – selon les termes de l’artiste. Il se transforme en explorateur, suivant les traces et les pas de Samuel Trenquier. Son œil se faufile à travers les éléments et s’engouffre petit à petit plus profondément dans la toile jusqu’à y être complètement absorbé.

Struck by this strange scenery, the viewer is led into a real “visual safari”, as the artist puts it. One becomes an explorer, following the tracks and footsteps of Samuel Trenquier. The eye sneaks through the elements and rushes deeper and deeper into the canvas until it is completely absorbed into it.

Maxime Brygo développe actuellement un travail sur la Meuse et ses affluents, en Province de Liège (Belgique). Son intérêt se porte tant sur l’inscription de ces cours d’eau dans le paysage (inscription façonnée par les nombreux usages et mutations paysagères au fil des siècles), mais aussi sur la relation qui lie ces cours d’eau aux habitants de la province. Il a entrepris une collecte de représentations de la Meuse, de rivières et de canaux – avec un intérêt pour les esthétiques propres à chaque époque – qui ont nourri une réflexion prolongée par une expérience du territoire.

A la rencontre de sourciers, de spéléologues, de bateliers, etc, il a recueilli des histoires ayant trait à des relations singulières à l’eau, à divers mythes et légendes, à des récits de navigation... Se laissant dériver le long de divers cours d’eau, il a effectué des photographies qui entrent en résonance avec certaines des images trouvées, certaines histoires entendues.

Si le travail revêt en partie ou a priori un caractère documentaire, les dimensions expérimentale et esthétique n’en sont pas moins essentielles ; la surface de l’eau, comparable à un écran sur lequel se forme une image en ré-élaboration permanente – possède également sa matière propre, que l’approche photographique entend appréhender.

Maxime Brygo is currently doing work on the river Meuse and its tributaries in the Province of Liège (Belgium). His interest is as much in the way these rivers form part of the landscape (by their many uses and landscape changes over the centuries), as it is for the relationship between these watercourses and the inhabitants of the region.

He undertook a collection of representations of the Meuse, streams and canals - with an interest in the aesthetics of each era - which fed a reflection extended by his experience of the territory. By meeting dowsers, speleologists, boatmen etc., he collected stories relating to unique relationships to water, various myths and legends, stories of navigation and so on. Wandering along the waterways, he took photographs that resonate with images he found and stories he heard. Although the work is partly, even a priori, of a documentary character, the experimental and aesthetic dimensions are no less essential; the surface of the water – comparable to a screen on which an image is formed in permanent re-elaboration – also has its own matter, which the photographic approach aims to apprehend. Finally, the artist tries to exploit the cinematographic potential of travelling on a watercourse by making several videos, placing the viewer in a contemplative relationship to the landscape that unfolds and reveals itself in fragments (or maybe hides itself). On the basis of his exploration of these directions, Maxime Brygo plans to produce an installation that is heterogeneous both by way of the diversity of the media - old and recent archive documents, as well as photographic, video and audio productions - and by way of the multiple approaches to the territory, including historical, geographic, socio-economic, urban planning, sociological and philosophical approaches.

The work aims to bring out a poetic vision of a territory marked by flow and travel: an invitation to drift.

Enfin l’artiste tente d’exploiter le potentiel cinématographique qu’offre le déplacement sur un cours d’eau, en réalisant plusieurs vidéos, plaçant le spectateur dans une relation de contemplation du paysage qui défile et se révèle par bribes (voire se dérobe).

De ces diverses pistes engagées, Maxime Brygo envisage de produire une installation hétérogène tant par la diversité de supports : documents d’archive anciens et récents, productions photographique, vidéo et audio, que par les multiples approches du territoire : historique, géographique, socio-économique, urbanistique, sociologique, philosophique...

L’œuvre ambitionne de faire émerger une poétique du territoire, du flux, du déplacement et peut s’envisager comme une invitation à la dérive.

S’il vouz plaît, quand’ on va faire la recherche d’u zouvenir d’avant le gros cri puissant d’un violent, ça ne s’en parait rien. Ça ne z’en saute paz dans le regard’, maiz à l’ovulation d’e rézid’ence je m’agissais zouvent d’être unique à l’atelier, malgré la n’importe laquelle activité qu’elle zoit d’un autrui qui z’organize d’e prend’re un bain calorique, d’un autre autrui occupé d’à livraizer des lambeaux d’e poizzon cru dans sa valize dorsale, ou d’e celui qui d’ispoze lez C.V avec lez tâchez d’e poivron dans des boutiques d’e Kabüp avec marchant zeul dans zon jogging vernaculaire, le Liégeoiz.

Moi, d’od’u maiz françaiz, j’étaiz au zein d’e l’atelier d’u milieu d’en haut, azziégé comme un fou d’e l’obligation d’e finir le montage d’e mon film UNE FEMME / d’OMMAGE. Bien soit pour z’entend’re, et je le d’is sans d’étournement d’orgueil, si je zuiz azzoiffé d’e réalizationz tangibles, là, je ne répercutais aucune imprezzion artiztique formelle pour celui-ci (ou celui-celle) qui va traverzer mon ezpace d’e recherche à l’occazion d’e sa diarrhée ou d’un bezoin pluz naturel. J’avaiz marre d’e me pazzer la vie dans lez fenêtres d’e mon ord’inatif, la coccinelle dans ma main comme un myope avec une d’égarniture occipitale d’e choix qui ord’onne lez factures d’un chauffagizte intouché par l’honnêteté.

D’époué, j’ai faite la d’écizion d’écourter mon montage pour jouer un jeu trèz hautement d’ifférent, car z’agitait une évid’ence grimpante sur mon Vizage qui d’od’eline, et sera celle d’inviter d’AURÉLIE WILLIAM LEVAUX dans lez Rézid’acyIntercommunale-Vivegniz-Artizticz. Aurélie, ça z’agit d’e la moitié d’e ma copulation, et j’inzizte sur le -je t’apprécie énormément- d’e cette d’éclaration car ne z’annonçait, pour moi-même, d’aucune pozzibilité d’e promulguer le tempz d’e travail auprèz des RAVIz d’en la laizzant en son logement parce qu’à nettoyer mon pantalon, compter ses ovaires, ou faire me d’un repaz farfelu pour un négligeux qui rentre à 19:30 dans l’épuizement des d’ispozitions d’u peintre en jpeg. Auzzi, ça s’enrichizzait d’une haute pertinence car nous nous agizzions d’être des auteur(e)z, et puiz d’e ce que nouz faizionz le pluz, décrire. Moi, d’écrire à cette manière déspouaisse quelques parutions, et elle autrement dépoué toutes sez siennes.

Nouz astuçions d’expérimentationz élégantes à mêler noz ambitionz dans le vernis des combinaizons, même zi ce faire ne permet nullement un avenir glorifiant au d’ézormais d’hui. Toutes lez façonz comptées, si nouz faizionz fauzze route dans une fauzze époque, ça pertinait à l’égal.

D’éspoués la d’ébutée d’e ce tempz d’e travail en atelier (cond’itionnement que je connaizzais pluz d’époué 15 ans par l’à cause d’une vie d’e d’éplacements qui m’a d’éclaré comme plutôt performatif), c’ezt même paz pozzible d’e d’ire sans faille lez chozes qu’on d’evait faire. Sur le plan des chozes à faire quand’ on z’aime, OK, maiz IMPOzzIPppp zur la planification des artiztez qui ont l’activité comme vivante, car au d’ézormais d’e ces jours nouz divulguions tout ça enzemble le zouvent le pluz grand’ pozzible. Pour réd’uire hautement la synthèze d’e notre prézentation et la raizon des -pourquois- qui galopent, je d’éclare que nouz avons travaillé à l’auprès d’e noz projetz perzonnelz et/ou partagés dans cet encad’rement rigoureux, et merci qu’on

Ainzi qu’à z’exprimer, sanz aucune rime, le chanteur de 2 PAC, Jacques Ourre: «Pour faire les prises de voix qualitatives, on est bien mieux dans une boule à verre isolée et insonorisée que dans un grand espace blanc au fond du nord de Liège».

D’ézpouèzz quelquez temps, nous nous exécutionz d’un d’ézir d’e faire des prizes d’e son pour des filmz parlés, et auzzi pour des voix off d’e performances, voire des chantées. À cauze que, et je ne voud’rais paz m’en pleurer dessus, l’atelier qu’on z’occupait était pluz grand’ que le rectum d’e la statue des Libertés, on avonz cherché à pluzieurz semainez exhauztives un moyen d’e procréer un cabinet d’e capter les sons qui va, et qu’on pourrait à s’en tranzporter facile.

Tout a pazzé par lez id’ées, des wouécés d’e feztival (Chapiteuf, Festifête, Retrouvailles…) à la cabine d’ancien téléphonique, au portant d’e costumier d’e petit théâtre en taffetaz d’encens froissé, pazzant par lez paraventz d’e Cherbourg d’e chez CAzA (et même, j’avaiz monté une table emburkanée d’u pend’rillon zur RAVI catalogue 2017-2018

une autre pour plonger mon Vizage en, au rizque que me d’écapite la table qui tombera et puiz qu’on est dessous penchés pour lire nos textes qui parlent d’injuztice…). Maiz Aurélie d’écid’a qu’on d’emand’e une boule d’e recyclage d’u verre auprès d’INTRAd’EL, et nouz z’avons obtenu ça.

Sanz lez photographiques, sera d’ifficile d’e la se reprézenter d’e bonne manière, maiz il faut comprend’re que d’eux poignées d’e baz permettaient à l’accèz avec la levant, et qu’il faut aller dessous pour attraper la poézie dans l’ord’inateur d’e d’ehors (avec pazzage d’e câble zculpté à la lime d’e Thiers) qui zouffle d’avoir chaud’ comme un chroniqueur rad’iophonique qui fait (comme moi ici) d’amuzantes paraboles d’e fils de pute pour escamoter, d’evant l’impozzible, son auguste compromizzion! On avonz insonorizé la boule à verre d’e matériel hautement profezzionnel d’izolation acouztique pour un rend’u allemand d’e stupéfiant haut d’egré à très bon.

Attention, tu sais, ça ne s’agizzait paz pour d’u tout nous d’e vérifier la boule comme d’un objet hautement artiztique d’évocation -REAd’Y MAd’E-, pas d’u tout. Maiz, le d’evoir d’e qu’on la voie nous garantizza son zoutien au zujet d’e la laizzer dans l’atelier.

Une caresse à la vitesse d’un battement de cils, voilà sans doute le regard que l’artiste pose sur le monde : subtil et vivifiant. Le travail d’Anne Büscher aborde le réel par effleurement. Une façon de donner de l’importance au toucher tout en restant dans un entre-deux. Une expérience de la surface qui permet de saisir toute la profondeur des choses de la façon la plus légère possible ... … «Où sommes-nous quand nous sommes dans le monde ?

Nous sommes dans un extérieur qui porte des mondes intérieurs.1»

Cette proposition du philosophe Peter Sloterdijk se prête bien à l’installation qu’Anne Büscher montre aux RAVI durant l’été 2017. Une série de boules en verre, de bulles ai-je envie de dire pour souligner la référence à l’ouvrage du philosophe, mais surtout parce qu’une bulle se forme en soufflant. Geste apparemment simple, mais qui demande une certaine maîtrise. Le corps et l’esprit se réunissent pour se concentrer sur le débit d’air qui permettra, doucement, de créer ces formes sphériques. Chacune différente des autres, elles transportent un peu de chaleur du corps dans ce vaste univers qui nous entoure. Et s’il n’était pas protégé par cette mince pellicule de verre, ce souffle intérieur se dissiperait aussi vite dans l’air ambiant. Il n’y aurait pas de forme, pas de monde intérieur.

Ces bulles, nous pouvons les envisager comme des projections de soi et leur surface, si transparente soit-elle, reflète le monde qui nous entoure. L’installation de l’artiste relie toutes ces bulles de verre sous forme d’un mobile suspendu. Elle nous raconte des mondes intérieurs qui se côtoient. L’aspect conceptuel de cet ouvrage fragile et presque naïf ne doit pas nous faire oublier sa dimension technique et matérielle. Anne Büscher donne beaucoup d’importance au processus de fabrication et c’est sans doute cela qui rend ses œuvres très tactiles. On peut sentir la manière dont l’artiste manipule les objets pour leur donner une forme et un sens. Ses photographies rassemblées sous l’intitulé Moon viewing sont le résultat de manipulations d’objets en verre qui s’appuient les uns sur les autres, trouvent petit à petit leur place sur la surface du papier photographique ; l’objet, le réel touche le papier sensible et laisse un fantôme comme une ombre colorée et persistante. Ne nous laissons donc pas tromper par l’aspect aseptisé de certaines de ses pièces et installations qui peuvent faire penser à un laboratoire clinique. Il s’agirait plutôt d’un dispositif dans lequel viendrait s’immiscer un rituel : créer un rapport entre le contenu et le contenant, où la main et l’esprit sont sans cesse reliés, attachés à rendre l’invisible palpable.

A caress at the speed of a flutter of the eyelashes is undoubtedly the glance that the artist rests upon the world: both subtle and invigorating. Anne Büscher's work tackles reality by touching it briefly.

It is a way of giving importance to touch while staying in between, an experience of the surface that allows you to grasp the full depth of things as lightly as possible!

“Where are we, when we are in the world? We are in an exterior that carries interior worlds 1.”

This idea, expressed by the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk, lends itself well to the installation that Anne Büscher showed at RAVI during the summer of 2017, in the form of a series of glass balls that I should like to call bubbles, to emphasise this reference to the philosopher’s work, but especially because a bubble is formed by blowing. It is an apparently simple gesture, but which requires some control. The body and mind come together to focus on the emission of air that will gently create these spherical shapes. Each one is different from the others; they carry a little warmth of the body in this vast universe that surrounds us. Were it not protected by this thin film of glass, this inner breath would dissipate at once in the surrounding air. There would be no form, no inner world. We can consider these bubbles as projections of ourselves and, however transparent their surface, they reflect the world around us.

The artist’s installation connects all these bubbles of glass in the form of suspended motion. She recounts to us inner worlds that rub shoulders with each other. The conceptual aspect of this fragile and almost naive work should not let us forget the technical and material aspect. Anne Büscher gives a lot of importance to the manufacturing process and this is probably what makes her works very tactile. One can feel the way the artist manipulates the objects to give them a shape and a meaning. Her photographs, entitled Moon viewing, are the result

of manipulations of glass objects leaning on each other, gradually finding their place on the surface of the photographic paper, whereby the object, what is real, touches the sensitive paper and leaves a ghost like a colourful, persistent shadow. So we should not allow ourselves to be deceived by the sanitised effect of some of her pieces and installations that may remind one of a clinical laboratory. It is rather a device in which a ritual interferes, creating a relationship between the contents and the container, where the hand and the mind are constantly connected, intent on making the invisible palpable.

En 2017, Carl Palm a investi les lieux des résidences RAVI avec un projet qu’il mène déjà depuis plusieurs années : Good Times & Nocturnal News. Un projet qui se présente comme une revue, tant au sens matériel que conceptuel du terme.

L’occasion pour l’artiste de rencontrer et faire interagir la parole et l’expression de différents artistes, curateurs, écrivains, … La forme papier de cette revue se veut adaptable à chaque situation dans laquelle elle prend forme. Son format, sa mise en page, son contenu se transforment d’expérience en expérience, de résidence en résidence. Good Times & Nocturnal News se veut polymorphe et tentaculaire.

Aux RAVI, l’installation de Carl Palm se lit comme une suite d’indices qui ne trouvent leur sens que par des interprétations multiples. Il ne s’agit pas de résoudre une énigme mais de se laisser emporter par un flux d’images, de mots, de sons qui ne trouveraient leur place que dans un paysage onirique. Ces sculptures sont des artefacts reliés entre eux par un liquide qui serait une sorte de métaphore du projet de l’artiste. Carl Palm s’intéresse au flux qui existe entre les différents éléments de l’œuvre mais aussi entre l’œuvre et ses «utilisateurs», c’est-à-dire ceux qui la regardent, en parlent, la conçoivent avec lui lors d’échanges verbaux, …

Ces éléments physiques deviennent source d’un langage onirique, discursif, conceptuel, systémique. La physicalité de la sculpture lui permet d’ancrer une pensée dans l’objet. Objets qui deviennent témoins de ses propres pérégrinations intellectuelles mais surtout des points de contact entre le matériel et l’immatériel, entre lui et les gens, ce qui lui permet d’organiser des rencontres dans le but de développer des idées, des pensées ou la relation elle-même. Ces rencontres ou points de contact deviennent des balises dans ce processus d’itinérance de la pensée et de la réflexion. Sans doute aussi une manière de rendre compte du nomadisme de ses actions et de ses objets qu’il développe durant ses différentes résidences. Une forme d’énergie.

In October 2017, Carl Palm invested the RAVI residences with a project he had already been working on for several years: Good Times & Nocturnal News.

This project presents itself as a magazine, both in the material and conceptual sense of the term. It provides an opportunity for the artist to meet the word and expression of different artists, curators, writers etc. and bring them into interaction with each other. The paper form of this magazine is intended to be adaptable to each situation in which it takes form.

Its format, its layout and its contents are transformed from experience to experience, from residence to residence. Good Times & Nocturnal News is polymorphic and sprawling.

At RAVI, Carl Palm's installation can be read as a series of clues that find meaning only through multiple interpretations. It is not a matter of solving an enigma but of being carried away by a flow of images, words and sounds that could only find their place in a dreamlike landscape. These sculptures are artefacts that are linked together by a liquid representing a sort of metaphor for the artist’s project.

Carl Palm is interested in the flow that exists between the different elements of the work, but also between the work and its “users”, i.e., those who look at it, talk about it or conceive it with him during verbal exchanges etc.

These physical elements become the source of a dreamlike, discursive, conceptual, systemic language. The physicality of the sculpture allows him to anchor a thought in the object. These objects become witnesses of his own intellectual wanderings but, above all, become points of contact between the material and the immaterial, between him and people, which allows him to organise meetings in order to develop ideas, thoughts or the relationship itself. These meetings or points of contact become beacons in this process of wandering of thought and reflection. No doubt this is also a way to account for the nomadic style of his actions and the objects that he develops during his various residences. It is a form of energy.

«D’une certaine façon, mon travail se construit autour de formes existantes que je rencontre dans un état d’incertitude. Là où leurs stabilités et leurs présences sont compromises. J’aime ce mouvement où les choses, sur le point de céder, vacillent et menacent de disparaitre»1 . Mahalia Köhnke-Jehl développe sa recherche plastique autour de l’instabilité et l’incertitude. Situés dans la fragilité de l’entre-deux, ces états permettent d’aborder les moments de tension entre équilibre et déséquilibre, entre présence et absence, qui révèlent une forme ou un geste.

Durant sa résidence, l’artiste multiplie les médiums, gestes et actions pour laisser transparaitre ces moments. Du dessin à la vidéo, en passant par l’installation, chaque œuvre est une tentative d’approcher le point de vacillement, sans toutefois basculer. Un équilibre fragile maintient verticalement des épis de blé posés sur leurs pointes (Epi(s)). Dans Sans fard à la rue du mont de piété, un tissu est soumis au vent. Constamment en mouvement sous l’emprise de cette force extérieure, il revêt des formes indéterminées, ne trouvant jamais son apparence cubique initiale.

Wheels within wheels, une affaire compliquée est composé de volumes qui se répètent et se répondent, tantôt posés sur le sol, tantôt flottant à quelques centimètres de celui-ci. Dans un jeu d’opposition entre les matières et les couleurs, ils évoquent la forme de roues dont l’absence est révélée par le moulage.

“In a way, my work is built around existing forms that I encounter in a state of uncertainty, where their stabilities and their presence are compromised. I like this movement where things that are about to give way, teeter and threaten to disappear” . Mahalia Köhnke-Jehl develops her plastic research around instability and uncertainty. Located in the fragility of the in-between, these states make it possible to address the moments of tension between balance and imbalance, between presence and absence, revealing a form or a gesture.

As somehow, anyhow, they moved on est le titre du projet présenté en fin de résidence. «De toute façon, d’une certaine façon, ils avançaient»… Inspirée d’un roman de Malcolm Lowry, Au-dessous du volcan, la citation se réfère à l’idée d’une série de hasards finissant par déterminer un sens2 . Le hasard, cet événement imprévu qui nous place dans un état d’incertitude avant de nous diriger vers autre chose.

Comme le geste de l’artiste qui, par son action et par sa façon de les capter, s’empare de ces moments d’instabilité pour mieux déterminer les formes déjà existantes.

During her residency, the artist multiplied media, gestures and actions to let these moments shine through. From drawing to video and installation, each work is an attempt to approach the point of teetering, without however tipping over. A fragile equilibrium maintains ears of wheat placed vertically on their spikes (Epi(s)). In Sans fard à la rue du mont de piété (Without Make-up in Pawnbroker’s Street), a fabric is subjected to the wind. Constantly moving under the influence of this external force, it takes on indeterminate forms, never recovering its initial cubic appearance. Wheels within wheels, une affaire compliquée (Wheels within Wheels, a Complicated Business) is composed of volumes that repeat each other and respond to each other, sometimes placed on the ground and sometimes floating a few centimetres above it. In a game of contrast between materials and colours, they evoke the shape of wheels, the absence of which is revealed by the moulding.

The title is inspired by Under the Volcano, a novel by Malcolm Lowry, and the quote refers to the idea of a series of chance occurrences that eventually determine a meaning . Chance is an unforeseen event that places us in a state of uncertainty before directing us towards something else, like the gesture of the artist who, by her action and by her way of capturing these moments of instability, seizes upon them to determine better the forms that already exist.

Je sonde sans cesse les limites physique et conceptuelle de la gravité pour refléter les réalités de la vie contemporaine. La gravité détermine et contraint notre façon d’être au monde et nos déplacements, nous liant indéfectiblement à la Terre. Je cherche une autre rencontre avec le réel, proche de la fiction où nous pouvons temporairement nous affranchir de l’ancrage terrestre.

Mon approche de la sculpture va au-delà de l’objet, c’est une expérience. Mes projets commencent par l’expérimentation du potentiel de la tension avant la chute sur mon corps. Le travail de sculpture émerge de ce processus pour créer des constructions qui intègrent la traction de la gravité dans leur conceptualisation en créant des situations où notre stabilité est mise en doute.

Dans l’atelier aux Ravi, je me suis intéressée aux poutres en acier qui supportent la toiture en dents de scie de l’ancien bâtiment industriel. Ce pêle-mêle de poutres a une beauté brute et dynamique.

L’installation Landing montre le squelette d’une forme tridimensionnelle triangulaire dont le point culminant est tourné vers le bas, six entités similaires sont suspendues symétriquement à partir des poutres à mi-hauteur de l’espace vide. Ces formes créent des tensions et des interdépendances entre des points, contraignant les déplacements et points de vue du visiteur dans la profondeur de l’espace.

I also continued to develop a group of models that I have been working on for two years. The model is a way to move from idea to realisation; some projects were made at scale 1, exceeding 3 metres in height, whereas others are utopian constructions that will remain at scale 1:10.

I observe the structures and infrastructures that constitute our environment. These structures stretch to infinity in the sky, and in a world in motion, unstable and in permanent wear, the verticalisation of our environment is both frightening and attractive.

The shapes and materials used in these models are familiar, so we seek to make comparisons because it is a mode of transaction of our society to establish a meaning.

Close to imbalance, vertigo, tension and fall, we try to articulate tangible elements between themselves to hang on to them, inevitably returning to the verticality of our presence in the world.

I constantly probe the physical and conceptual limits of gravity to reflect the realities of contemporary life.

J’ai également continué à développer un corpus de maquettes sur lequel je travaille depuis deux ans. La maquette est un moyen de passer de l’idée à la réalisation, certains projets ont été réalisé à échelle 1, dépassant les 3 mètres de haut et d’autres sont des constructions utopiques qui resteront au 1:10ème. J’observe les structures et infrastructures qui constituent notre environnement. Ces structures s’étirent à l’infini dans le ciel, et dans un univers en mouvement, instable et en usure permanente, la verticalisation de notre environnement est à la fois effrayant et attirant. Les formes et matériaux employés dans ces maquettes sont familiers, on cherche alors à établir des comparaisons car c’est un mode de transaction de notre société pour établir un sens.

Gravity determines and constrains our way of being in the world and our motion, binding us indefectibly to the Earth. I am looking for another encounter with reality, close to the fiction in which we can temporarily free ourselves from earthly anchoring.

My approach to sculpture goes beyond the object: it is an experience. My projects begin by experiencing the potential of the tension before the fall on to my body. The work of sculpture emerges from this process to create constructions that integrate the pull of gravity into their conceptualisation by creating situations where our stability is questioned.

Proche du déséquilibre, du vertige, de la tension et de la chute, nous essayons d’articuler des éléments tangibles entre eux auxquels nous raccrocher, nous renvoyant inévitablement à la verticalité de notre présence au monde.

In the RAVI workshop, I became interested in the steel beams that support the sawtooth roof of the old industrial building. This jumble of beams has a rough, dynamic beauty. The installation entitled Landing shows the skeleton of a three-dimensional triangular shape with the culminating point turned downwards, and six similar entities are suspended symmetrically from the beams at medium height in the empty space. These forms create tensions and interdependencies between points, constraining the visitor’s movements and points of view in the depth of the space.

Céline Lastennet was born in 1989. She studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of sculptor Vincent Barré, where she graduated in 2013.

Since then, she has worked as an independent artist and as such has received various residency and award grants for projects in Europe and abroad, including: Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, Pollen Monflanquin, Casa de Velazquez and Sancy Artense Community.

Antoine NESSI

The world of industry is the central theme around which Antoine Nessi’s plastic work develops. He is as much interested in the foundations as in the functioning of this particular universe, discovering an aesthetic potential in it. Relocated to be resituated in the artistic context, the production process and all its workings acquire a new dimension through the gaze and gestures that the artist places on them. Continuing this shift between industry and art, Antoine Nessi offers RAVI a visit to a vanished company, somewhere between fiction and reality.

It all begins with a video entitled Les Sculptures de Pomona (The Sculptures of Pomona). In the manner of commercial clips promoting flourishing factories, Antoine Nessi presents this company. But far from flourishing, it is revealed to be abandoned. In ruins, there are only a few ghostly objects that take their place in the workshop area. Four blue cans are scattered on the ground. Formed by the assembly of two bottoms, these containers are completely sealed and hermetic. Deprived of their functionality, somehow defective, they become Bulles spéculatives (Speculative Bubbles), the content of which will

Tout commence avec une vidéo, Les Sculptures de Pomona. A la manière des clips commerciaux qui promotionnent les usines en plein essor, Antoine Nessi y présente ladite entreprise. Mais loin d’être florissante, celle-ci se révèle être abandonnée. En ruine, il ne reste que quelques objets fantomatiques qui prennent place dans l’espace de l’atelier. Quatre bidons bleus sont éparpillés à même le sol. Formés par l’assemblage de deux fonds, ces contenants sont totalement scellés et hermétiques. Privés de leur fonctionnalité, en quelque sorte défaillants, ils deviennent des Bulles spéculatives dont on ne connaitra jamais le contenu. Une machine aux allures organiques est posée à proximité de ces bidons. Machine malade est réalisée à partir du moulage d’une machine d’usinage devenue obsolète. Reléguée sous une bâche en plastique lui donnant l’apparence d’un fantôme, elle semble muter vers une autre fonction, muer vers une forme inattendue et encore incertaine.

Produits de cette entreprise fictive, en phase de se muséifier, les objets rescapés, ainsi présentés, questionnent avant tout le devenir du processus de production et de ses opérateurs. Que reste-il quand une usine ferme ses portes ? Que se passerait-il si les machines continuaient de produire en toute autonomie des objets après fermeture, en l’absence des travailleurs ? Quelle trace reste-il au final des machines mais aussi – et surtout – des ouvriers qui ont cessé de les activer ? Autant de questions qui trouvent un écho dans les œuvres, objets-machines, façonnées par Antoine Nessi.

never be known. A machine with an organic appearance is placed near these cans. Machine malade (Sick Machine) is made from the moulding of a machining apparatus that has become obsolete.

Relegated under a plastic tarpaulin that gives it the appearance of a ghost, it seems to mutate towards another function, to move towards an unexpected and still uncertain form.

Products of this fictitious company, in the process of ‘museification’, the surviving objects, thus presented, question above all the future of the production process and its operators. What is left when a factory closes? What would happen if the machines continued to produce objects independently after closure, in the absence of the workers? In the end, what trace remains of the machines but also – and especially – of the workers who have stopped operating them? All these questions find an echo in the works, objects-machines, shaped by Antoine Nessi.

La mise en lumière des choses banales, telle est une partie de la recherche de Letizia Romanini. Observant objets et gestes du quotidien, sans valeur apparente, elle leur associe un intérêt pour les notions de disparition, d’effacement, de lenteur, avec en filigrane un questionnement sur le temps. Série en cours depuis 2015, les dessins d’évaporation regroupent par exemple ses réflexions : une goutte d’encre mêlée à de l’eau interagit lentement avec la surface de papier sur laquelle elle est déposée. Progressivement, la matière s’évapore. Et ainsi, sous l’emprise du temps, au terme d’un long processus, la goutte se transforme en dessin minéral.

Highlighting things that are banal is part of Letizia Romanini’s research. Observing everyday objects and gestures with no apparent value, she associates them with an interest in the notions of disappearance, deletion and slowness, shot through with questioning about time. Her “evaporation drawings” are a series in progress since 2015. They include, for example, her reflections: a drop of ink mixed with water slowly interacts with the surface of paper on which it is deposited. Gradually, the matter evaporates, absorbed by the support. Thus, under the influence of time, after a long process, the drop is transformed into a mineral pattern.

Poursuivant cette recherche développée dans ses dessins, Letizia Romanini se concentre lors de sa résidence sur l’analyse d’un phénomène particulier : la cristallisation d’une forme et d’une matière en états suspendus. Prenant pour point de départ l’observation d’une éponge de vaisselle séchant sur le bord d’un évier, elle réalise différentes expériences sur ce matériau particulier qui allie souplesse, malléabilité et variation morphologique. Chaque essai convoque de nouvelles formes que l’artiste manipule durant le temps d’évaporation de l’eau avant de les laisser se figer.

Continuing this research developed in her drawings, Letizia Romanini concentrated during her residency on the analysis of a particular phenomenon: the crystallisation of a form and a material in suspended states. Taking as a starting point the observation of a dishwashing sponge drying on the edge of a sink, she carried out different experiments on this particular material, which combines flexibility, malleability and morphological variation. Each attempt brought together new forms that the artist manipulated during the evaporation time of the water before allowing them to become fixed.

Résultat de ces manipulations, Variations # 2 et Variations # 3 en conservent l’empreinte. Suspendues dans l’espace, elles deviennent des enveloppes légères et d’apparence molle, cristallisées temporairement dans un entre-deux. Les gestes posés par Letizia Romanini jouent sur les formes et les contre-formes. Celles-ci répondent au lieu qu’elles habitent et au corps qui les parcourt. La lumière naturelle, importante dans l’espace de l’atelier, amplifie cette relation. Elle souligne les plis qui forment chaque volume façonné. Comme dans les œuvres des Primitifs flamands qui nourrissent le travail de l’artiste, la lumière révèle les mouvements du tissu, accentuant l’impression de légèreté et de flottement.

Variations # 2 and Variations # 3 are the result of these manipulations, retaining their imprint.

Suspended in space, they become light envelopes of soft appearance, temporarily crystallised in an inbetween space. The gestures performed by Letizia Romanini play on forms and counter-forms. These respond to the place where they live and the body that runs through them. Natural light, which is important in the area of the studio, amplifies this relationship. It highlights the folds that form each shaped volume. As in the works of the Flemish Primitives on which the artist’s work draws, the light reveals the movements of the fabric, accentuating the impression of lightness and floating.

Le travail développé aux RAVI s’insère dans la récolte plus globale d’instants évanescents que collectionne Letizia Romanini. Cette collection de «petits riens» prend sens et corps non seulement dans les mains de l’artiste mais aussi dans le temps et l’espace. Avec sensibilité, ils apparaissent progressivement puis se figent en un état particulier, avant de disparaitre en laissant une trace parfois imperceptible, fugace et fragile.

The work developed at RAVI is part of the more global harvest of evanescent moments that Letizia Romanini collects. In this collection, little things of no apparent consequence take on meaning and body not only in the hands of the artist but also in time and space. With sensitivity, they gradually appear and then become fixed in a particular state, before disappearing and leaving a trace that is sometimes imperceptible, fleeting and fragile.

Depuis leur création, les RAVI ont l'ambition de s'inscrire dans un réseau européen de résidences. Opérer des échanges et pouvoir assurer la diffusion d'artistes de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles dans un espace international est un objectif en cours de progression.

Un partenariat est établi depuis trois ans, d'une part avec la structure anversoise AIR Antwerpen et d'autre part avec le centre d'art allemand KUBA situé à Sarrebruck. Une fois par an, RAVI accueille un artiste flamand et un artiste allemand durant 3 mois tandis que deux artistes de la Fédération WallonieBruxelles sont accueillis pour un séjour de même durée à Anvers et en Allemagne.

Partenariats

Since their creation, the RAVI have the ambition to be part of a European network of residences. A goal in progress is to make exchanges and to ensure the diffusion of artists from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in an international space.

A partnership has been established for two years, on the one hand with AIR Antwerpen and on the other hand with the cultural center KUBA located in Saarbrücken. Once a year, RAVI welcomes a Flemish artist and a German artist for 3 months, while two artists from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation are welcomed for a stay of the same duration in Antwerp and Germany.

International residency project for visual artists AIR Antwerpen is centered around the contemporary artistic practice and focuses on individual artistic needs of the emerging visual artist. The organisation guides the artist in a process-based project, with time and space as a premise for a site-specific and contextual practice.

As an independent institute in a (supra) national network AIR Antwerp is offering national and international artists a temporary stay in a specific environment with selected partners, AIR Antwerpen values its unique and experimental identity and guarantees a consistent quality and competitively range of artists, partners and projects. AIR Antwerpen nurtures intercultural dialogue that arises from its local roots and the cultural, social and political current environment that Belgium offers. KuBa Cultural Center at the EuroBahnhof Le centre culturel KuBa situé sur le site de l'ancienne gare du nord de Sarrebruck, est devenu un lieu d'échange artistique pluridisciplinaire.

En 2017, KuBa fête ses 11 ans d'existence. Agissant comme lieu d'impulsion dans un vaste espace, KuBa se transforme en un lieu de rencontres où artistes, collectifs, privés et publics, passionnés d'art échangent des idées et créent une plate-forme commune. KuBa favorise la mise en réseau des artistes de différents secteurs. Des évènements et des collaborations avec les autorités régionales et interrégionales culturelles viennent étoffer la programmation.

Cultural Center at the EuroBahnhof The KuBa cultural center at the EuroBahnhof, located on the site of the former railway station in the north of Saarbrücken, has become a place of multidiscipline artistic exchange.

In 2017 Kuba celebrates 11 years of existence. As an impulse center in a functionally largely undefined place, the KuBa develops into a meeting place where individual artistic and cultural workers, collectives, and art enthusiasts exchange ideas and create a common platform. The KuBa, the cultural center at the EuroBahnhof, promotes the networking of artists from different art and cultural sectors, in particular through the kreativzentrum.saar. Events and cooperations with regional and interregional cultural institutions complete the program.

of the women filling the punnets with strawberries faster than the artist herself could manage easily.

She felt around her the multi-coloured clothing, smiles and jokes the women exchanged and the tired or proud postures of the men, but she also felt the sweat running down her arms.

«Des bonbons de moka, des gâteaux feuilletés, des cookies américains et des tartines de fromage blanc, tout est soigneusement emballé et rassemblé dans un sac en plastique du Aldi» Il y avait dans un coin de l’atelier de Ciel Grommen, une petite table qu’on hésitait à qualifier de bureau. Documents écrits, photographies, tasses, planches à pain et couteau se mélangeaient.

Cette ambiguïté entre espace de travail et espace convivial où l’on peut «casser la croûte» ensemble illustre bien la manière dont Ciel travaille. La recherche artistique passe par une approche simple et sensible du monde. En amont de cette résidence aux RAVI, l’artiste a passé plusieurs semaines avec des cueilleurs saisonniers. Des Bulgares précisément. Ciel voulait apprendre à les connaître : ce qu’ils pensent de la Belgique, s’ils aiment ce genre de travail, comment nos cultures peuventelles cohabiter, …

Elle adopte une approche similaire à l’ethnographie qui implique la personne sur le terrain. Il ne s’agit pas seulement d’observer, mais de vivre avec les gens.

Pas seulement d’essayer de comprendre mais aussi de sentir, d’expérimenter le vécu de l’autre. L’artiste ira jusqu’à suivre un groupe de cueilleurs jusqu’en Bulgarie. Elle tirera de cette expérience un petit livre qui mêle textes et images. Des crayonnés aux gestes vifs et chaleureux comme ceux de ces cueilleuses qui remplissent les raviers de fraises à une vitesse que l’artiste est loin d’avoir. Elle sent autour d’elle les couleurs des vêtements, les sourires, les blagues entre femmes et les pos-

tures fatiguées ou fières des hommes mais elle sent aussi la sueur couler le long de ses bras. L’image un peu bucolique qu’elle s’était fabriquée en entrant dans ce projet artistique va petit à petit prendre de la profondeur. Dans différents récits, Ciel Grommen témoigne de parcours parfois difficiles liés à un nomadisme forcé par la pénurie de travail des pays dont sont originaires les cueilleurs qu’elle rencontre.

La Belgique se réduit souvent à un lieu de travail et les gens ont tendance à se réfugier dans leur culture, leur groupe de travailleurs qui souvent proviennent d’un même village. Elle rend compte des malentendus, maladresses dans les moyens de communiquer, malgré la bonne volonté qui peut exister de part et d’autre, des patrons belges et des travailleurs bulgares. Le simple exemple de la langue est parlant. Pour elle, l’anglais est la langue passe-partout mais eux préfèreront parler allemand, russe ou turc. L’anglais ne fait son apparition que timidement en Bulgarie. Cet indice de la langue, Ciel Grommen l’utilise pour rendre compte d’une Europe peu homogène aux trajectoires d’habitants très variées et qui ne sont pas soumises aux mêmes conditions.

Pour Ciel Grommen, la résidence aux RAVI lui a permis de décanter cette expérience de terrain parmi les cueilleurs bulgares et de préparer d’autres projets directement liés à celui-ci. Début juillet 2018, une maison-hôte s’installera dans le parking du Aldi de Borgloon, là où se réunissaient souvent les cueilleurs. Pendant 65 jours, la durée d’un séjour d’un travailleur saisonnier dans l’agriculture en Belgique, il y aura un pavillon «a public house for a private time». En collaboration avec les architectes Maximiliaan Royakkers et Dieter Leyssen, ce projet a le désir de questionner les trajectoires de migrations, les notions d’habitation et d’habitat, d’hospitalité, du heimat dirait-on en allemand, ce sentiment d’être chez soi.

Artist invited under the partnership with Air Antwerpen "Mocha sweets, flaky cakes, American cookies and slices of bread with cottage cheese spread, everything is carefully packaged and collected in a plastic bag from Aldi" There was a small table in a corner of Ciel Grommen's studio, which it was hard to call an office. Written documents, photographs, cups, breadboards and a knife lay together in disarray. This ambiguity between a workspace and a convivial meet & eat area is a good illustration of how the artist works.

Artistic research requires a simple and sensitive approach to the world. Upstream of this RAVI residence, the artist spent several weeks with seasonal fruit pickers, Bulgarians who come every year to Campine, the artist’s region, to make a little money.

Ciel wanted to get to know them better: what they think of Belgium, whether they enjoy their work, and whether our cultures can live together …

She takes a similar approach to ethnography, involving actual grassroots people. It is not just about observing, but about living with people; not only trying to understand, but also to feel, to participate in other people’s life experience. Subsequently, the artist went so far as to follow one of the groups of pickers back to Bulgaria. She derived from this experience a little book that mixes texts and images – pencil sketches with lively, warm gestures like those

The slightly bucolic image she had represented by submitting this artistic project gradually took form.

Through different stories, Ciel Grommen bears witness to journeys that were sometimes difficult, linked to a nomadic way of life imposed by the shortage of work in the countries from which the pickers come.

Belgium is often reduced to a place of work and these people tend to take refuge in their culture, their group of workers who often come from the same village. She recounts examples of misunderstanding and clumsiness in the means of communication despite the goodwill that can exist on both sides, Belgian bosses and Bulgarian workers. The simple case of language is revealing. For her, English is the go-anywhere language, but they prefer to speak German, Russian or Turkish. English is only timidly making its appearance in Bulgaria. Ciel Grommen uses this language clue to give an account of a Europe that is not very homogeneous for the very varied trajectories of its inhabitants, who are not subjected to the same conditions.

Ciel Grommen feels that the RAVI residence has enabled her to decant this field experience among these Bulgarian pickers and to prepare other projects directly related to this one. At the beginning of July 2018, a hosting house will be set up on the Borgloon Aldi car park, where pickers often met. For 65 days, the duration of the stay of a seasonal worker, there will be a pavilion entitled “A public house for a private time”. In collaboration with architects Maximiliaan Royakkers and Dieter Leyssen, this project wishes to question migration trajectories and notions of housing and hospitality. Heimat in German, this is the feeling of being at home, belonging to a land and a community.

Artist invited under the partnership with KUBA Feathers, fibres, thorns: Petra Jung builds sheaths and nests from natural materials. She is interested in the many metamorphoses that occur in life. Subject to change, each stage of life leaves relics behind: shells left empty in nature, abandoned because they are no longer needed for future development, or like nests left when the fledgling starts to fly on its own.

Plumes, fibres, épines… Petra Jung construit des gaines et des nids à partir de matériaux naturels. Elle s’intéresse aux multiples métamorphoses qui surviennent dans la vie. Soumise au changement, chaque étape de celle-ci laisse derrière elle des reliques. Comme les coquilles laissées vides dans la nature, abandonnées car elles ne sont plus nécessaires dans le futur développement. Ou ces nids quittés lorsque l’oisillon commence à voler de ses propres ailes.

Drawing her inspiration from these organic processes, Petra Jung creates refuges that evoke moultings and transformations to which we are subjected. These delicate homes comfort and protect.

Dotted with thorns and nails, they also recall the vulnerability and fragility of the being that inhabited them. Once they have become relics, they carry in them the testimony of an interior life, an earlier life recently left in order to go and explore the world.

S’inspirant de ces processus organiques, Petra Jung crée des refuges qui évoquent mues et transformations auxquelles nous sommes soumis. Ces foyers délicats réconfortent et protègent. Parsemés d’épines et de clous, ils rappellent aussi la vulnérabilité et la fragilité de l’être qui les a habité. Devenus des reliques, ils portent en eux le témoignage d’une vie intérieure. Une vie antérieure récemment quittée pour partir à la découverte du monde.
