MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION (Round 17 of 26) This weekend’s senior rugby, in addition to today’s 1st XV league fixture, includes the following:2nd XV – away to 3rd place Bromsgrove – KO 2:15pm (league) 3rd XV – home to Rugeley 2s – KO 2:15pm (league) SUNDAY: Ladies – no matches this weekend Colts – away to Walsall (KO 2pm) LEAGUE REVIEW The past fortnight’s results might just have provided some clarity and certainty (where have we heard those two words recently?) as to who will eventually fill the top two positions in this league.

Scunthorpe’s visit to Newport on 9 February will probably be pivotal in deciding the exact finishing order. It, however, may be wrong to dismiss Bridgnorth’s and Luctonians’ claims to be involved! Broad Street, winners at Bridgnorth on Saturday, and Sheffield remain very decent sides, who will definitely influence the outcome of the contest at the top.

The next block of six sides continue to have mixed results to keep the waters muddied, this includes Bournville finally (after seven straight defeats) claiming a win - against Burton.

Our latest, two contrasting, defeats have to be classified as disappointing. We were well in the game against Nuneaton at half time but we lacked a number of the positive traits, which Dan Hemingway would have been looking for, in the second period. Tries for Matt Woodhouse and Kev Birt. Last week, we found ourselves 34-0 behind at half time, with only 14 men, following a red card for Matt Chandler. We then proved how good we can be, scoring four tries (Greg Massey x2, Matt Fairweather & ‘’Ditch’’ Burton) and were just one try away from an improbable victory. There is a need for a more consistent benchmark and the ‘’dog’’ to keep us out of the choppier waters, which lie ahead.

Doncaster Phoenix remain an enigma but with an experienced player/coach, Declan Cusack, their potential to escape the bottom two is real, although Syston must surely be doomed.

SCUNTHORPE W13 D1 L2 with 63 points, top position with one point more than Newport. A stream of efficient performances underpins their success, no big score lines but sides find them difficult to overcome with their all court game. Their only defeats have come at Luctonians and Sheffield and they had to settle for a drawer at Bridgnorth in December.

Next weekend’s league game is at Sheffield (Abbeydale Park – S17 3L J) and the following week, on a Friday evening (1 Feb), we visit Burton in the semi final of the Staffs Cup. The next HOME game is on Friday 8 February against Bournville – KO 7:45pm.

WOMEN’S RUGBY The victories and the ever improving performances continue. Last week, the Red team defeated Loughborough Town 24-0 (just 3 points conceded in the past five outings), which confirmed our position in second place. This nicely sets us up for next Saturday’s home game against the leaders, West Park Leeds, with kick off at 2:15pm.

Meanwhile the Green team maintain their steady learning curve and are still in second spot after their comfortable victory over Wymondham Wasps (27-5) last weekend, this was their fifth consecutive win. Their next game is on 3 February at Buckingham Swans, who are ‘’level’’ with us in 3rd.

OTHER RUGBY The 2nd XV have posted wins against Bournville & Sutton C (69-5) this month to maintain their #1 position in the league, whilst the 3s demolished Longton 2s (92-5) and Essington 2s to go back to second. The colts defeated Veseyans last Sunday and a 50 point victory helped the U16s into the county cup semis.
