MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION (Round 19 of 26) We welcome you all to another Friday night lights match, the third of four before the end of the season, the last one being at home to Derby on 22 March. It is hoped you enjoyed your pre match ‘’pie night’’ to warm you up for the main event. Other senior rugby this weekend is as follows:SATURDAY:2nd XV – home to Dudley Kingswinford – KO 2:15pm (league) 3rd XV – home to Leek 3s – KO 2:15pm (league) Ladies – Red team home to Novocastrians (league) SUNDAY:Colts – away to Stoke (KO 2pm) Ladies Green team – no game

LEAGUE REVIEW Three weeks ago we witnessed why Scunthorpe are top of this league – admittedly on points difference only – they were so simple, yet highly efficient, in all aspects of their game with a very mean and structured defence. They also know when to squeeze a bit harder to get what they want.

All of this will be fully tested tomorrow afternoon, as they visit 2nd place Newport in what could well be the decider for automatic promotion. Newport have the better squad but don’t always utilise their capabilities; both sides are in decent form of late.

Our last league outing ended in defeat at Sheffield by 37-14 after leading at half time with tries from Calum Hagyard and Matt Woodhouse. Our first half efforts weren’t mirrored thereafter.

Finally, a mention for Syston following their 2nd victory of the season against Nuneaton a fortnight ago, they obviously haven’t given up and have improved over the last couple of months. Considering how good the Nuns were here under the lights in January, it was a surprise result.

BOURNVILLE – W7 D0 L11 (7th position).

After beating us 49-27 in October, the south Birmingham side went on an eight match run of losses.

In mid January, they eventually ended that run and have since beaten Burton, Derby and Doncaster Phoenix to give themselves a small amount of breathing room. The gap between them and Donny (bottom but one) is still only 13 points and it is fair to say that no one in that party is safe at this stage.

Next Saturday, we visit Bridgnorth (post code WV15 5AA) with KO at 2:15pm; the next HOME game is then on 2nd March against Broad Street with KO back to 3pm.

WOMEN’S RUGBY In their penultimate league match for the season, the Red team grafted hard to be the side to prevent West Park Leeds from having a 100% record for the campaign; a captivating match ended all square

at 19-19. This guaranteed we would finish second again, with lots of progress being shown during the 13 games so far. The Green team were snowed off last Sunday, so still have four games to complete, with the next one being at the end of February.

They remain second in their league.

OTHER RUGBY Our involvement in the Staffordshire cup ended last Friday night, as the hosts controlled enough of the game to finish the semi final 35-20 to the good. The 2nd XV have posted two recent successes, away at Bromsgrove (by 3 points) and then overcoming Droitwich by 57-22, this leaves top of the table with Wolverhampton being our main rival. Our league cup quarter final was called off last weekend, so we must meet Sutton at a later date with Wolverhampton quite likely to be our opponents in the last four.

The 3s had worked their way back to the number one slot in their league after comfortable wins against Rugeley and Handsworth but Burntwood reclaimed (temporary) local bragging rights with a ‘’home win over’’ last Saturday, whilst our game was postponed.

SOCIAL Both internationals can be seen on the big screen tomorrow afternoon, followed by England’s game on Sunday at 3pm – much better than watching in silence at home! Two other dates for the diary are the Past Players’ Day on 6 April and on 13 April we host Ladies’ Day.
