D i r e c t o r ’s M e s s a g e To read our blog, Durham by the Book, go to: http://dbtb.wordpress.com/ Dear Reader, In mid-February, as I write this letter to all of you in Durham, columnist Lori Borgman has just published a love letter to libraries. Her sentiments may reflect your own: l I love libraries because they have summer reading programs and summer reading programs keep mothers sane. Kids who are reading books are kids who are not yelling, bouncing off the walls or corralling worms in your Tupperware. l I love libraries because their late fees are reasonable, none of that 28 percent business the credit card companies charge. l I love libraries because they promote social networking. You can meet explorers, artists, musicians, politicians, theologians, talking dogs and singing frogs at the library. l I love libraries because they don’t play games with frequent flier miles. Simply open a book and you can travel to France, Italy, the Arctic or the Outback. The air fare is free and there’s no baggage fee. A library is the only business model that lets you sample before you buy. If you suggest that the grocery store let you load up a cart, take it all home and return what’s left a month later, they’ll call security. Only a library lets you take home the goods and fully enjoy them. Ms. Borgman goes on in her column about libraries with a supposed “reverential hush,” but in my experience public libraries aren’t the quiet, reverential places many of us remember from class-lined-up visits to our elementary school libraries or the carrels and stacks of our college and university libraries. Public libraries are places where children are lively and singing, adults are meeting neighbors and discussing all kinds of things, and there’s a general buzz of activity, and yes, the buzz includes people on cell phones conducting business, talking over what they’re finding on the Internet computers, and a million other things. APRIL What’s All That Jazz About? – A Jazz Appreciation Workshop Tuesday, April 13; 7 p.m. Stanford L. Warren Library, 1201 Fayetteville St. In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, jazz saxophonist and composer Shenole Latimer will teach you how to listen to and appreciate music from the jazz idiom. No prior knowledge of jazz is needed. Award-winning New York saxophonist Shenole Latimer, who performs in venues up and down the East Coast, draws inspiration from artists like Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis and Dexter Gordon.

Book Discussion: Let’s Talk About It -

Jeanes teachers – African-Americans, usually women, paid in part by grants from the Jeanes Fund – were specifically charged with improving vocational and industrial education. This talk brings to life Durham County’s Jeanes teachers, particularly Mrs. Carrie T. Jordan, who was responsible for holding the first county-wide commencement for black schools and was a key player in bringing Rosenwald Foundation funds to Durham County to build schools for African-American students. The history of Durham County’s African-American schools during the years 1900-1930 will also be featured.

An Evening with Marilyn Nelson Monday, April 19; 7 p.m. Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. In celebration of National Poetry Month, join us as we welcome award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson. Ms. Nelson is the former Poet Laureate of the State of Connecticut and the author of A Wreath for Emmett Till and Carver: A Life in Poems (a Coretta Scott King Honor Book). Ms. Nelson will read from her work and answer questions about the writing process. Co-presented with NCCU’s James E. Shepard Library.

In the second Invest 4 College workshop, our instructors will help demystify investing by explaining the basic terms and concepts, from saving vs. investing to rebalancing.

What are all the real costs of college and how do you pay for them? During the last Invest 4 College workshop, we will discuss college costs and how to find scholarships and financial aid to help pay for them. You will learn the best time to start searching for scholarships and grants, what State-based grant programs are available, how the financial aid process works, Federal Student Aid programs, and how your personal savings and investments impact financial aid eligibility.

III. TOOLS OF THE TRADE: ARE YOUR INVESTMENTS WORKING? Stanford L. Warren: Monday, March 15, 7 p.m. North Regional: Tuesday, March 16, 7 p.m. In the third Invest 4 College workshop, you’ll learn about the tools you can use to research and evaluate your investment choices, and how to decide if they are working for you. We’ll show you two online investment tools available from the library.

Star Spangled Girls (a performance by Touring Theatre of NC) Sunday, March 7; 3 p.m. Star Spangled Girls is drawn from the memoirs and letters of thirty-seven women veterans. The play presents these venerable women as they share memories of events and emotions about enlistment, basic training, service at home and abroad, love, and segregation in the military. The Women Who Ran the Schools: Durham County’s Rural Black Schools, 1915-1930, and the Jeanes Teachers Sunday, April 18; 3 p.m. Jeanes teachers – African-Americans, usually women, paid in part by grants from the Jeanes Fund – were specifically charged with improving vocational and industrial education. This talk brings to life Durham County’s Jeanes teachers, particularly Mrs. Carrie T. Jordan, who was responsible for holding the first county-wide commencement for black schools and was a key player in bringing Rosenwald Foundation funds to Durham County to build schools for African-American students. The history of Durham County’s African-American schools during the years 1900-1930 will also be featured.

How to donate books: The Friends of the Durham Library welcomes donations of books, audiobooks, CDs and DVDs, except for: encyclopedias, magazines, cassettes and condensed books. You may take your donation to any Durham County Library location during regular hours. Please bring large donations (more than one box) to the Main Library garage on Tuesday morning between 9 and noon, when the Friends of the Durham Library are present and can help unload.
