ATHLETICS RECORDS BEST CUMULATIVE GPA IN SCHOOL HISTORY

Liberty Athletics achieved the best cumulative GPA in school history following the 2024-25 academic year with a 3.4 cumulative GPA. The mark is the highest year-end mark and highest overall cumulative GPA in athletics department history.

All 20 of Liberty’s teams earned a 3.0 or higher GPA for both the fall and spring semesters as well as for the 2024-25 academic year and cumulatively. It was the second straight year all 20 teams had a 3.0 or higher GPA for an academic school year. The feat had never been achieved prior to 2023-24.

Working behind the scenes to equip Liberty’s student-athletes with all the necessary tools to excel in the classroom is Liberty’s Academic Affairs for Athletics staff.

This group of dedicated individuals spends countless hours each week working alongside Liberty’s 575-plus student-athletes. Their staff continues to help Liberty student-athletes thrive in their pursuit of academic, athletic, social and spiritual development.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE

RECORD NUMBER 8 PROGRAMS POST PERFECT SCORES

The NCAA recognized a record eight Liberty Athletics programs for holding a perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in its release of its multi-year APR score for the 2023-24 academic year.

Liberty’s previous record for 1,000 APR scores in the same academic year was the last two years when the Flames had six teams post perfect scores in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

Since the NCAA started releasing multi-year APR score information for the 2004-05 academic year (19 years – no scores in 2019-20 due to COVID-19), Liberty Athletics has had 47 teams post a perfect APR score of 1,000. Additionally, 20 of those 47 perfect APR scores have been recorded during the last three years.

Liberty’s football (981) and men’s track & field (980) programs posted all-time high APR scores during the release of the multi-year APR scores for the 2023-24 academic year.

For the second straight year, Liberty Athletics has earned the Conference USA Institutional Excellence Award. The award is given to the institution with the highest GPA during each academic year for all student-athletes in conferencesponsored sports.

Liberty Athletics ended the 2024-25 school year with a 3.40 cumulative GPA, the highest mark among all CUSA schools and best year-end mark in athletics department history. CUSA SPORTS ACADEMIC AWARDS

SHEPHERD’S OFFICE

While Liberty Athletics continues to strive to meet its mission of achieving victory with integrity, its student-athletes and coaches never lose sight of the mission of Liberty University and its goal to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ whenever the opportunity arises.

The Lord continues to move among our student-athletes with multiple salvations and many taking their profession of faith public with a baptism. Throughout the year, 15 student-athletes made their faith known by getting baptized, including some baptisms by their fellow teammates and coaches.

As Liberty softball program prepared to defend its title at the 2025 CUSA Softball Championship, the team celebrated another type of victory before the championship began. The team watched Lady Flames Head Coach Dot Richardson baptize 26 softball players from five Conference USA schools at the tournament host hotel following their public professions of faith in Jesus Christ.

Flames Fellowship (athletes gathering) meets monthly. In these gatherings, student-athletes lead worship along with sharing their testimonies.

COMMUNITY SERVICE & PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

During

SPIRIT OF SERVICE

In 1974, the Rock Royer/Mac Rivera Award was established to honor the top graduating senior student-athlete at Liberty University who best exemplifies the standards and lives of both of these great Christian men. Rock Royer was Liberty’s first football coach in 1973. Mac Rivera was a member of Liberty’s basketball team from 1972 until 1975. Both Rock Royer and Mac Rivera tragically died at a young age.

This award encompasses more than just athletic ability. It recognizes the Liberty University graduating senior student-athlete who has maintained an exemplary testimony on the playing field, in the classroom and among the student body.

This year’s recipient, Tavia Rienertson, is the first women’s lacrosse player to ever win this honor after leading the Lady Flames to their first-ever conference title and first NCAA Tournament appearance this year. The senior paced Liberty with a single-season program record 57 goals and 74 points along with 17 assists.

Outside of her stellar play on the field, Reinertson was active in the community and represented the women’s lacrosse program on Liberty’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee. The senior participated in many community service efforts. This past spring with a 3.37 GPA with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Reinertson plans to earn an MBA in executive leadership as she continues her education at Liberty. She was

SOFTBALL 1ST TIME TO SUPER REGIONALS

The Liberty softball team made history at the 2025 NCAA Bryan-College Station Regional, winning two out of three games against No. Texas A&M to earn its first-ever Super Regional appearance.

The Lady Flames were the first team in the Super Regional era (since 2005) to knock out the No. national seed in the Regional round, grabbing national attention. Liberty’s contest with Texas A&M on May 18 was the most watched regional game of 2025 on ESPN Platforms.

Liberty appeared in the NCAA Division Softball Championship for the fifth year in a row and finished the season with a program-record 50 wins. The Lady Flames have competed in three straight NCAA Regional finals and four out of the last five.

Liberty Flames guard Taelon Peter became the third player in program history and the first in the Division era to be selected in the NBA Draft. The guard was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the second round and the 54th overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft on June 26.

The guard became the first Flame selected in the NBA draft in 40 years. Cliff Webber was the last Liberty player drafted when he was selected in the fourth round by the Boston Celtics in 1985. With the selection, Peter became the highest NBA Draft pick in program history.

Liberty’s other previous NBA Draft picks include Webber (1985/Round 4/Boston Celtics) and Ezra Hill (1984/Round 10/Phoenix Suns).

The Russellville, Ark. native had a pre-draft workout with the Pacers, one of seven teams he worked out with. Peter also worked out for the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets.

Peter enjoyed a strong 2024-25 season with the Liberty Flames, as he was named the CUSA Sixth Player of the Year, tabbed to the All-CUSA third team and honored on the CUSA Championship All-Tournament team. He was the team’s leading scorer (13.7 ppg) despite only starting two times. The guard shot 57.8 percent from the field and 45.3 percent from three. Peter’s three-point percentage during the 202425 season established a new school single-season record.

TRIPLE CROWN WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY & TRACK & FIELD SWEEP CUSA TITLES

For the first time since the 2016-17 season (Big South Conference), Liberty women’s cross country/track and field won all three CUSA titles - cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field - during 2024-25. It was the first by a CUSA women’s squad since 2007-08 (Rice).

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lady Flames captured their first CUSA women’s cross country title in November. Seven Liberty runners finished inside the top 14 as the Lady Flames notched a dominating 28-94 victory over defending champion Middle Tennessee. The 66-point win marked the largest margin of victory in CUSA Cross Country Championships history.

INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

The Lady Flames defeated conference newcomer Kennesaw State by 28 points to repeat as CUSA women’s indoor track & field champions. The Lady Flames claimed their fourth straight indoor conference title overall at the meet held at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex, Feb. 28-March 1.

OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Liberty topped runner-up UTEP by 61.5 points in May in Murfreesboro, Tenn., recording the largest margin of victory at the CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships since 2013. The Lady Flames also became the first CUSA women’s team to win back-to-back outdoor championships since UCF earned four in a row between 2010-13.
