TODAY’S GAME “4 DOWNS” WITH THE LOBOS

STORYLINES

1) On the heels of back-to-back home wins, Liberty (2-2) will wrap up its three-game homestand against New Mexico (2-1, 0-0 Mountain West), the first Mountain West squad ever to visit Williams Stadium. 2) Liberty and New Mexico are meeting for the second time in 365 days. After racing out to a 42-10 halftime lead in Albuquerque on Sept. 29, 2018, the Flames held on for a 52-43 victory. New Mexico could become the first FBS opponent the Flames have ever defeated multiple times. 3) Scoring could come in bunches on Saturday, considering the two teams combined for 95 points and 1,148 yards of offense in their meeting a year ago. Last week, Liberty (62 points) and New Mexico (55) both lit up the scoreboard in victory. 4) Liberty senior QB Stephen Calvert appears on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Preseason Watch List. He threw for 417 yards and two TDs at New Mexico last season. 5) Senior WR Antonio Gandy-Golden, a Biletnikoff Award Watch List member, currently leads the nation with 544 receiving yards. He hauled in 11 passes for a schoolrecord 245 yards at New Mexico in 2018.

1) The Flames and Lobos both feature No. 1 national rankings on the NCAA FBS statistical charts this season. Liberty WR Antonio Gandy-Golden leads all FBS players in both receiving yards (544) and receiving yards per game (136.0). Meanwhile, New Mexico is the only one out of 130 FBS programs that has yet to allow a quarterback sack in 2019. 2) Liberty and New Mexico will be meeting for the second time, with both matchups coming within a 365-day span. The Flames are aiming to improve to 2-0 against the Lobos and make New Mexico the first FBS team it has ever defeated multiple times. Two of the Flames’ last three home games this season will see teams from the Land of Enchantment visit Lynchburg. Liberty will close the regular season by hosting New Mexico State on Nov. 30. 3) Liberty QB Stephen Calvert has recorded three 400-yard passing games during his career, including a 417-yard outing at New Mexico last season. Meanwhile, New Mexico QBs have combined for just three 300-yard efforts over the past four seasons. However, one of those was Sheriron Jones’ 312-yard showing against Liberty in 2018. 4) New Mexico has won four bowl games in program history, with the most recent triumph coming on its home field over UTSA in the 2016 New Mexico Bowl. The Lobos’ men’s basketball team has won four Mountain West Conference Tournament titles, including a 2005 crown under the direction of current Liberty Head Coach Ritchie McKay.

6) Redshirt senior DL Jessie Lemonier has recorded 14.5 sacks in 16 career appearances as a Flame, including 1.5 at New Mexico a year ago. He will face a Lobos offensive line that has yet to allow a sack in 2019.

WILLIAMS STADIUM CLEAR BAG POLICY CLEAR BAG POLICY:

In an effort to enhance fan safety and expedite entrance to Williams Stadium, Liberty University has implemented a security screening process. This process includes a clear bag policy that limits the size and types of bags that can be brought into the stadium by fans. The implementation of this measure is intended to enhance public safety while minimizing time spent searching bags at gate security checkpoints, thus easing access into the stadium. Liberty’s new clear bag policy fully went into effect for the Flames’ Sept. 24, 2016, game against Jacksonville State and will be enforced strictly during the 2019 football season.

The policy is consistent with the NFL’s current model. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Williams Stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will be permitted. Spectators will also be able to carry other items allowed into the stadium, such as binoculars, cameras, and smart phones.

PLAYER FEATURE STORY 100 YARDS WITH SOLOMON AJAYI

Senior linebacker Solomon Ajayi (6-1, 235) has immensely contributed to Liberty’s defense since transferring in 2018. Last season, Ajayi tied for the team lead in two defensive categories: total tackles (76) and fumble recoveries (2). Ajayi has his sights on an even bigger and better year, and Flames Illustrated caught up with him midway through the 2019 season to learn more about his goals.

What is your all-time favorite football movie?

“The Express - It’s a movie that was one of my favorites when I was young. It’s about Ernie Davis. He was the first African American to win the Heisman. It was cool to watch something that inspirational.”

What are some goals you’d like to achieve this season? “I want to help my team get to their first bowl game. That’s the biggest goal and at the top of my list. Personally, I have a goal of 100 tackles and five-plus turnovers.”

How has the hiring of Coach Freeze and the additional staff impacted your game?

“Coach Freeze is a great coach, and the assistants he brought in are also great. Coach (Kyle) Pope has definitely helped me become a better linebacker. He’s helped me to be able to diagnose things quicker and be able to perfect my craft and find ways to get better each and never get complacent.”

Your brother Jay has had success in the NFL. What was it like growing up together, and how has that impacted the way in which you develop your own career? “It was awesome growing up with my brother. We are really close, and we talk to each other all the time. My whole life he’s been good at football, so it wasn’t a surprise that he has gone on to play professionally. We never got to play with each other because we had a four-year difference, but with video games, I used to beat him a lot. We’re still waiting for the day we both meet on the same football field, but it should be special.”

When you’re not playing football, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

“I’m a big music guy. Whenever we have music in the locker room, I’m the aux guy. I always have headphones in around campus, and I just love listening to music. I look up a lot of art and have some pictures hanging in my room. I like seeing paintings, drawings, and all kinds of abstract stuff.”

What are some of your aspirations for after you graduate from Liberty?

“I want to make the jump to the next level and become an NFL player. I’m also on track to graduate in December, so that’s another big thing for me, to get my degree. I want to get my degree and then hopefully get to the NFL, God-willing.” By Kailey Bandara, Liberty Athletics Communications

How would you describe the team’s determination this year?

“I think we’re a lot more driven. We have a more professional manner about how we go about things. We attack each week like a pro. Every day, we try to get better because our coaches have given us the mindset that if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse.”

What is something most people don’t know about you?

“I’m a big cartoon guy. I love cartoons. I’m probably watching cartoons nine times out of 10 whenever I’m at home; that’s probably all I watch.”

As a senior, what do you hope to leave as your legacy?

“I just hope the young guys that come after me know the standard that I and the rest of the senior class have set - to be great men and to work hard and to always give it your all in everything you do.”

Housing computer labs, classrooms, lecture halls, and a rooftop terrace, the 4-story DeMoss Hall serves as one of the primary academic buildings on campus. Connected to DeMoss, the Montview Student Union features additional dining options, space for student clubs, student service centers, and a bowling alley, in addition to lounge seating and open common areas.

With the completion of the third Residential Commons in August 2017, these buildings house nearly 3,000 students. Each building features two-person rooms, private bathrooms, on-site laundry, and a coed common area, providing students with comfortable seating and televisions.

The 4-story Jerry Falwell Library is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing resources in both traditional and digital formats. Students can study in a variety of reading rooms, group study rooms, multiple balconies and terraces, and a spacious cafĂŠ.

Located across the lawn from the Jerry Falwell Library, the Center for Natural Sciences houses classrooms, an auditorium, and more than 30 laboratories designed for hands-on learning, including an advanced anatomy lab and a cell culture lab. The 4-story building also contains $2 million in equipment, such as a gene sequencer and GC mass spectrometer.

Housing classrooms, a research center, and labs, the 4-story Center for Medical and Health Sciences is home to the College of Osteopathic Medicine and select programs of the School of Health Sciences.

Completed in Fall 2017, the tower is the centerpiece of Libertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campus rebuilding. It stands on the north end of campus, near The Food Court at Reber-Thomas, and houses the Rawlings School of Divinity as well as spaces for special events. The tower also holds the Rawlings Scriptorium, which exhibits a collection of sacred texts, interactive screens, and a life-size replica of the Gutenberg press.

The Center for Music and the Worship Arts is split between two linked 4-story buildings and houses a concert hall capable of seating 1,600 guests. It is located along Libertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main academic corridor, across the courtyard from DeMoss Hall and adjacent to the Jerry Falwell Library.

A new 78,000-square-foot, 3-story building for the school was recently completed. The building includes a 500-seat auditorium, information technology labs, data centers, and the Center for Entrepreneurship. It also has a simulated stock trading room featuring glass walls, New York Stock Exchange display boards, and a real-time ticker.

JERRY FALWELL

Jerry Falwell Jr. became president of Liberty University in May 2007 just after the passing of his father, Liberty’s founder, Rev. Jerry Falwell. In the years since he accepted the position, Liberty has seen substantial growth in enrollment, financial resources, and capital improvements. Falwell was born on Father’s Day, June 17, 1962, in Lynchburg, Va. He attended Liberty Christian Academy (formerly known as Lynchburg Christian Academy) and Liberty University, graduating in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and History. He obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law and was licensed to practice law in 1987. Falwell married Becki Tilley of Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1987, and the couple has lived on their farm in Bedford County, Va., since then. They have three children — Jerry Falwell III (Trey), Charles Wesley, and Caroline Grace — and two grandchildren — Virginia Rose, daughter of Wesley and Laura, and Reagan Elise, daughter of Trey and Sarah. The president and Becki make themselves accessible to students and have worked to create a family atmosphere for students at Liberty.

Prior to becoming the university’s president, Falwell represented local clients and served as general counsel for Liberty and its related organizations. During those years, Falwell also became a commercial real estate developer, focusing on properties in the vicinity of Liberty University. His companies were highly successful in the recruitment of many national retail and restaurant chains to the area. Since Falwell became president of the university, enrollment has grown from 36,500 to more than 100,000 online and residential students. Liberty’s assets increased from approximately $100 million in 2007 to over $2.8 billion in 2018 as a result of increasing support from donors, responsible fiscal management, and unprecedented enrollment growth. In the past five years, the university’s revenue has increased from $860 million to over $1 billion. Liberty’s AA rating was reaffirmed by Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings in April 2019, yet the university has remained among the most affordable of all private universities and continues to award $230 million of institutional aid to its students each year. Falwell was instrumental in the NCAA approving Liberty’s waiver request to compete at the Football Bowl Subdivision level as an independent. Under Falwell’s leadership, Liberty has grown to become one of the largest Christian universities in the world. In addition to enhancing Liberty’s academic, athletic, and financial profiles, Falwell has played an active role in planning and construction. Ian McCaw Bio IAN MCCAW

Ian McCaw has a vision for Liberty Athletics, and he has worked quickly to make that vision a reality since being named the department’s 11th director of athletics on Nov. 28, 2016. His vision is for Liberty’s intercollegiate athletics program to Train Champions for Christ, provide a world-class student-athlete experience, and achieve victory with integrity. McCaw has lived out this mission, guiding Liberty Athletics to unparalleled success on the field, in the classroom, and in the local community in a short time on Liberty Mountain. Less than three months into his time at the head of the Athletics Department, McCaw helped launch Liberty into the top level of intercollegiate competition. On Feb. 16, 2017, Liberty received notification that the NCAA had approved its request to enter into a two-year Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) reclassification process. During Liberty’s final two seasons as a member of the Big South Conference, McCaw guided Liberty Athletics to its 13th and 14th Sasser Cup titles in 2017 and 2018, an annual award given to the top athletics program in the conference. McCaw also helped pave the way for the future of Liberty Athletics on May 17, 2018, when it was announced that 17 of the 20 NCAA Division I programs would end a 27-year run in the Big South Conference to join the ASUN Conference starting with the 2018-19 athletics season. Under McCaw’s leadership, Liberty Athletics wasted little time making an impact in the ASUN Conference. During its inaugural season, Liberty’s Athletics programs captured seven ASUN championship titles, including men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), baseball (tournament), women’s tennis (regular season), men’s indoor track & field,

women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Additionally, Liberty Athletics was awarded the Bill Bibb Trophy, which is presented to the ASUN Conference institution with the top overall athletics program. The success of Liberty’s football program at the FBS level has garnered substantial attention. In 2018, Liberty finished with a 6-6 record, becoming the ninth team in NCAA history to win six or more games in its first year of FBS competition. McCaw is well equipped to lead Liberty into the future, having nearly two decades of previous service as director of athletics at Baylor (2003-16), Massachusetts (2002-03), and Northeastern (1997-2002). During his time at Baylor, the Bears experienced tremendous success on the field, in the classroom, and in fundraising and facility development. McCaw helped Baylor capture five team national championships, had 17 student-athletes win individual national championships (track & field and men’s and women’s tennis), and captured 58 Big 12 Conference titles. Prior to his days at Baylor, McCaw served as the director of athletics at the University of Massachusetts during the 2002-03 academic year and as director of intercollegiate athletics and campus recreation at Northeastern from 1997-2002. McCaw went to Northeastern from Tulane, where he served as senior associate athletic director for development and associate athletic director for external affairs from 1992-97. He was also Tulane’s co-interim director of athletics in 1996. Prior to his years at Tulane, McCaw worked in a variety of athletic administrative posts at the University of Maine from 1986-92, including sports information, marketing, and external affairs. McCaw earned his master’s degree in sport management from Massachusetts in 1987, after receiving a bachelor’s degree in sports administration at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, in 1985. McCaw and his wife, Heather, have four children: Christy, Paul, Callie, and Corinne.

A winning tradition at the highest level of NCAA collegiate football was brought to Liberty Mountain when Hugh Freeze was introduced as the ninth head coach in football program history on Dec. 7, 2018. Freeze brought over 25 years of continued coaching success to Liberty, including head coaching experience that has led to conference titles, nationally ranked recruiting classes, and bowl appearances at multiple stops during his highly decorated career. Prior to being named Liberty’s 9th head football coach, Freeze’s collegiate head coaching stops have included Lambuth University (2008-09), Arkansas State (2011), and Ole Miss (2012-16), where he posted a combined 42-32 mark in eight seasons.^

W IF E : JILL CH IL DRE N: RAGAN, JORDAN, AND MADISON The native of Oxford, Miss., returned to his hometown school and led it back to championship form during his five seasons as head coach of Ole Miss. Freeze guided the Rebels to bowl games in three of his five years with the team, including victories in the Music City Bowl (2013 season) and the Sugar Bowl (2015 season). Freeze’s time in Oxford was highlighted by a 10-3 campaign in 2015, the program’s first 10-win season since 2003. The Rebels won their first four games of the 2015 season, including a 43-37 road victory over No. 2 Alabama, Ole Miss’ first win in Tuscaloosa, Ala., since 1988.

HUGH FREEZE BIO Alabama went on to claim the national title, finishing the season with a 14-1 overall record. The Crimson Tide’s loss to Ole Miss marked the third time in program history that the Rebels were the national champion’s only loss of the season. The 2015 campaign also included a thrilling 38-27 win over No. 21 Mississippi State in its “Egg Bowl” rivalry game with the Bulldogs and a 48-20 win over No. 16 Oklahoma State in a New Year’s Six bowl game in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl contest. Ole Miss was ranked as high as No. 3 in the national polls in both 2014 and 2015 and finished top 10 in the country for the first time since 1969 after the Sugar Bowl win (No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the Associated Press poll). Ole Miss was a mainstay in the national polls during Freeze’s tenure. The program was in the top 25 for 45 weeks over his five-year coaching stay and had a string of 27 straight weeks in the polls for the first time since 1962. In 2013, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) awarded Freeze the Grant Teaff Coach of the Year award. Freeze has been heavily involved with FCA during his entire coaching career, has been featured in the FCA Magazine, and has spoken at FCA functions. Freeze was also a finalist for the 2014 Bear Bryant Award and the 2014 Dobb Trophy. The Bear Bryant Award is given annually to the top NCAA National Coach of the Year, while the Dobb Trophy honors the head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Freeze has an eye for the nation’s most talented high school players, collecting four

nationally ranked recruiting classes at Ole Miss. In 2013 and 2016, his recruiting classes ranked in the top five nationally, making them the best in program history. Freeze and his staff developed 20 players who earned All-SEC honors, including All-Americans Cody Prewitt, Senquez Golson, Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil, Evan Engram, Laquon Treadwell, and Trae Elston. Treadwell was Ole Miss’ first ever SEC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and became the school’s first Biletnikoff Award finalist in 2015. Nkemdiche was the first defensive lineman to be named a Hornung Award finalist. Engram won the Ozzie Newsome Award and the Pop Warner College Football Award following the 2016 season. Eleven Ole Miss players were selected in the NFL Draft during Freeze’s time as head coach, including first-rounder Engram, as well as D.J. Jones, Derrick Jones, and Chad Kelly. In 2016, the Rebels had three first round draft picks: Tunsil, Treadwell, and Nkemdiche. Donte Moncrief, Donte Golson, Fahn Cooper, and Cody Core were also drafted over the last four years. Before returning to Oxford, the former Ole Miss assistant experienced a record-setting run at Arkansas State. With Freeze as head coach in 2011, the Red Wolves captured the Sun Belt Conference championship and became just the third school in Sun Belt history to finish undefeated in league play with a perfect 8-0 mark. The 10-2 overall record marked the program’s first 10-win season since 1986, when ASU was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference.

HUGH FREEZE BIO In the best debut season ever by an A-State head coach, Freeze became just the 14th FBS first-year head coach to win 10 regular season games. He also returned ASU to a bowl game for the first time since 2005. Freeze was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, while 13 of his pupils earned all-conference honors. Freeze’s first season in Jonesboro saw him serve as Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator, guiding the Red Wolves’ offense to a record-breaking year in 2010. ASU, ranked No. 42 in the nation in scoring offense, finished the season averaging 30 points a game and recorded at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games for the first time in school history. Freeze’s offense scored 46 touchdowns for the fourth-most in school history and the most since the 1975 season. Prior to his arrival at Arkansas State, Freeze compiled a 20-5 record over the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the helm of the Lambuth University Football program in Jackson, Tenn. Freeze was named the American Football Coaches Association’s Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Eagles to their best regular season in school history with an 11-0 record. Under Freeze’s direction, Lambuth won the Mid-South Conference West Division, advanced to the second round of the NAIA playoffs for the first time since 1999, finished the year with a 12-1 mark, and ascended to the No. 6 ranking in NAIA. The Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year oversaw the offense and called plays for a Lambuth team that averaged more than 40 points per game and ranked 9th nationally in total offense (465 ypg). The Eagles also ranked 1st in 4th-down conversions, 4th in 1st downs per game and 3rd-down conversions, 5th in passing, and 8th in scoring offense. Prior to taking over as head coach at Lambuth, Freeze served on the Ole Miss staff from 2005-07 and was an assistant coach for the final two seasons.

Before going to Ole Miss, Freeze served 13 years at Briarcrest Christian School (Memphis, Tenn.) as a classroom teacher, coach, and administrator. He was the Saints’ head football coach from 1995-2004, running the no-huddle “spread system” for 6 years that led to 6 straight state championship games. Freeze compiled a 99-23 record while at Briarcrest, which included an undefeated season in 1996, and led the school to state championship titles in 2002 and 2004. Briarcrest won regional titles in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2002, and Freeze was named the Region 8-AA Coach of the Year 5 times and the Associated Press Coach of the Year 4 times. Among his talented pupils during that period were eventual Ole Miss Rebels and NFL starters Michael Oher and Greg Hardy. Before assuming the role of head coach at Briarcrest, Freeze served as the team’s offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 1992-94, as the Saints reached the TSSAA state semifinals twice. A 1988 graduate of Senatobia High School, Freeze received an associate degree from Northwest Mississippi Community College in 1990 and was a two-year letterwinner on the Ranger baseball team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992. It was while attending USM that he became active in mission projects, serving as a missionary in Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Australia. Freeze also served as the state president for the Mississippi Baptist Student Union. Born in Oxford and raised in Independence, Miss., Hugh and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three daughters: Ragan, Jordan, and Madison.

The Liberty Football Center, complete with coaches’ offices, academic rooms, locker room, equipment room, and training room, is located at the north end of the stadium. Williams Stadium was expanded from 12,000 to 19,200 seats, and a five-story tower was completed. The tower features a press box, 18 luxury suites, an 11,000-squarefoot Club Pavilion, offices for the Liberty Athletics administration, and concessions stands.

A then Liberty- and Big South-record 19,314 fans attended the first game at the renovated Williams Stadium during a 52-14 victory over Savannah State.

Williams Stadium hosted its first-ever nationally televised game on ESPNEWS as Liberty defeated No. 4 Coastal Carolina 24-21.

Newly-expanded Williams Stadium hosted Libertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural game as an FBS member. The Flames defeated Old Dominion 52-10.

ABOUT

Opened in time for the start of the 2006 football season, this 48,000-square-foot building brought all operations for the football team under one roof for the first time in program history. Construction for the Liberty Football Center (LFC) was made possible because of a generous $4.5 million donation by the Art Williams Foundation, which has had a significant impact on Liberty University. The football stadium was named in honor of Arthur L. and Angela Williams, who have been major contributors to the university.

Shortly after the conclusion of the 2018 football season — Liberty’s first campaign at the FBS Level — a $25 million renovation project began on the LFC that is scheduled for completion in January 2020. The current renovation project will dramatically expand the footprint of the existing building, adding an additional 18,000 square feet to the facility to bring the building’s usable space to 65,455 square feet.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY As part of the football program’s FBS reclassification process, Liberty opened its newest football facility during the summer of 2017 — the Liberty University Indoor Practice Facility. The new $29 million project provides a fullsize indoor football practice field, plus end zones, with a 70-foot ceiling clearance. The facility is located northeast of the Football Operations Center and adjacent to Liberty’s AstroTurf practice field.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE YEAR IN REVIEW

Liberty made an immediate impact during its inaugural year of ASUN Conference competition, sweeping the Bill Bibb Trophy (all sports), the Jesse Fletcher Trophy (men’s sports), and the Sherman Day Trophy (women’s sports). Seven Flames teams captured ASUN titles, including men’s basketball (regular season and tournament), baseball (tournament), women’s tennis (regular season), men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Women’s swimming & diving also won a conference championship, earning the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) crown during its first year hosting the event at the Liberty Natatorium.

FOOTBALL

Liberty finished with a 6-6 record during its inaugural FBS season, becoming the ninth team in NCAA history to win six or more games in their first year of FBS football.

CROSS COUNTRY AND TRACK & FIELD

Liberty won five conference titles, including ASUN championships in men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field, along with the Lady Flames’ second straight ECAC indoor track & field crown. Alejandro Perlaza Zapata placed sixth in the men’s 400 at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships and came in fifth in that event for the outdoor championships. He was one of a programrecord nine qualifiers to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Flames won a program-record 29 games, headlined by the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history, a first-round triumph over Mississippi State. Liberty captured the ASUN Tournament title after sharing the regular-season championship with Lipscomb.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Flames posted a 10-6 ASUN record and reached the ASUN Tournament semifinals during their first season in the conference.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Flames ranked No. 10 nationally with 2.13 goals per game, and leading scorer Kevin Mendoza was selected by Los Angeles FC in the MLS SuperDraft.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Liberty tied for third place in the ASUN standings with a 5-3 conference record and was the only ASUN team to defeat conference champion Lipscomb.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lady Flames finished the 2018 season with a No. 16 national ranking. Senior Agueda Moroni became the program’s first player to earn first team All-American honors.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Liberty won 12 of its final 16 games, advancing to the ASUN Tournament title game during its first season in the conference.

Regional title. Liberty finished as the ASUN regular-season runner-up on its way to a third consecutive 40-win season.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lady Flames earned their second CCSA team title in program history and their first since 2014. Liberty went 15-0 in dual-meet competition, pushing its dual-meet winning streak to 23.

MEN’S TENNIS

Led by the ASUN Player of the Year and NCAA national singles qualifier Nicaise Muamba, Liberty went 6-1 in conference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Lady Flames crafted a 6-1 conference record, earning a share of the ASUN regular-season championship.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Liberty won a program-record 14 games on its way to the ASUN Championship final during its first season in the conference.

MEN’S GOLF

The Flames qualified for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship for the second time in program history, tying for 20th place as a team. Gabe Lench shared 24th place in the individual competition. Liberty also placed second in the ASUN Championship and came in fifth at the NCAA Athens Regional.

BASEBALL

Liberty’s first appearance in the ASUN Baseball Championship resulted in the Flames’ fifth conference title and first since 2013. Liberty posted the fifth 40-win season in program history, tying the school record with 43 victories, and made its sixth NCAA Regional appearance.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Flames reached the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) Championship Round for the second time in three years after winning the NISC Lynchburg

FOOTBALL GAME DAY COVERAGE

During the 2019-20 academic year, Flames fans can catch all the action on the Liberty Flames Sports Network (LFSN), which is comprised of Liberty’s radio and television networks and has covered Flames athletics since 1981. The flagship radio station for Liberty Football is The Journey 88.3 FM in Lynchburg, Va. The 50,000-watt station is part of The Journey FM Radio Network, which has 19 affiliates that cover Virginia and much of North Carolina. Alan York returns for his 10th season calling Flames Athletics. York is the radio play-byplay voice of football and men’s basketball. Additionally, York is the television voice for Liberty Baseball and Softball. Nick Pierce handles radio play-by-play duties for baseball and the football sidelines, while Jamie Hall broadcasts Liberty Women’s Basketball. Kevin Keys provides play-by-play for Liberty softball. Fans may also follow Liberty Athletics on WFFP Channel 24, the flagship television station of LFSN. The station airs football as well as baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and volleyball games. The station can be viewed on all satellite and cable systems throughout Southwestern and Central Virginia. Liberty sporting events have been broadcast on outlets across the nation, including the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), ESPN+, ESPN3, Cox Television Network, American Sports Network (ASN), The Walk, and various independent stations, representing more than 40 million households coast-to-coast. The Liberty Flames Football Show returns to the radio airways on Monday night at 6 p.m. The 60-minute weekly coach’s radio show moves to a new location for the 2019 season, as the Monday night show will be hosted at Iron & Ale, located at 106 Cornerstone St., Lynchburg, Va. 24502. The “Voice of the Flames” Alan York hosts the hourlong show that takes you inside Liberty Athletics. Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze joins York each week, along with Liberty Athletics administrators, student-athletes, and other coaches. The show is carried on the regional ESPN family of stations: 93.3 FM (Lynchburg), 1320 AM (Lynchburg), 1240 AM (Roanoke), 106.3 FM (Danville), and 1250 AM (Bedford).

GAME ON

A weekly sports show that airs on LFSN affiliates around the country, “Game On” hit the airwaves in February 2014. The show is available locally on WFFP 24, WSET ABC 13, WDBJ7, MASN, and ESPN+. Check local listings for air times. The 30-minute show, hosted by Matt Warner, Rett McGibbon, and Bobbie Bohlig, focuses not only on Liberty’s student-athletes but also includes special guests, notable athletes, and coaches from across the sports spectrum — all telling their stories of faith and discussing current issues in sports and culture. The show also provides relevant commentary from guest analysts. “Stories are a language that everyone understands,” says Kevin Keys, executive producer for Broadcast Communications. “Inspirational stories from the intersection of athletics and faith are what we try to find in order to motivate our viewers to live lives of great character. LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND LIBERTY UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND

The Liberty University Marching Band, The “Spirit of the Mountain,” has established itself as a prestigious collegiate marching ensemble. This corps-style group features contemporary show designs which have appealed to a variety of mass audiences. The flashy horn line, precision marching, and impeccable movements have dazzled many crowds to their feet, while the color guard has demonstrated its versatility with a variety of choreographed movements. The band has performed at a New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons game at a Meadowlands, for the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown, Pa., on three occasions, and for a large number of competitive exhibition performances on the East Coast. In addition, the band has performed in exciting venues in New York City as well as at Jacksonville Landing, Walt Disney World, Carowinds Park, and Broadway at the Beach. The band has also performed on college campuses, at many competition sites, and in the Lynchburg community. The “Spirit of the Mountain” is again hosting the State of Virginia Marching Band State Championship Finals in Williams Stadium and will host the Bands Of America competition, performing exhibitions for all the bands in attendance for both events. The Liberty University Marching Band is excited about its show, entitled “Take Me Home,” exclusively arranged for Liberty University. The show is comprised of eight tunes on the

theme of the various states in the United States of America. The show is designed especially to entertain the audiences at NCAA football games. Dr. Kerr joined the Liberty University School of Music faculty in 1990 and was appointed director of bands in 2000. Dr. Kerr received his bachelor’s degree in music education from Liberty in 1982, his master’s degree from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Kerr also directs the acclaimed Liberty University Wind Symphony and teaches instrumental conducting and other music and band courses. Essential staff that support the Liberty University Marching Band include Alyssa Hurley (assistant director), Tommy Goddard (assistant director of athletic bands and drumline), and Bryanna Boyd (guard instructor). Marching and music technicians include Catie Pakenham, Tim Fus, Kara Witt, Tyler Crocker, Austin Esquirell, Caleb Martin, Gioanni Galan, and Dani Smith.

RENARD BROWN

BASEBALL: 1980-82

Renard Brown’s impact on Liberty’s record books still stands today despite his last steps on the diamond as a Flame coming nearly four decades ago. Brown finished his three-year career at Liberty with a .376 batting average, which ranks second in school history to fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Sid Bream. He also ranks inside the top 10 of several other career categories, including runs (eighth, 153), triples (third, 20), and walks (10th, 88). The native of Baltimore, Md., was an NAIA AllAmerica honorable mention selection in 1981 and helped the Flames advance to the NAIA World Series after winning the NAIA District 19 and Area 8 tournament events. As a senior in 1982, he led the Flames with a .409 batting average, 56 RBIs, and 67 hits.

JOHNNIE ENGELHARDT

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD: 1982-84

Following a six-year stint serving our country in the United States Army, Johnnie Engelhardt came to Liberty, where he became the Flames’ first NCAA Division II men’s cross country All-American. Engelhardt individually placed 12th at the 1983 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Championship, which earned him All-American status. His finish helped Liberty place 10th as a team after the Flames captured the Division II South Regional title. En route to success at nationals, Engelhardt also helped Liberty claim the program’s first-ever MasonDixon Conference title in 1983 with his third-place showing at the championship event. The native of Willingboro, N.J., also found success in the distance events for the Flames Track & Field program. He earned NAIA All-America honors in the indoor two-mile run in 1983 and was named the MVP of the 1983 NAIA Indoor District 29 Championship.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: 1980-83 Liberty’s all-time career leader in rebounding, Steve Isaacs continually crashed the boards for the Flames to help him become the eighth men’s basketball player to join the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame. Isaacs completed his stellar four-year career with 1,130 career rebounds and is one of only three players in program history with 1,000 career boards. He also ranks fifth in program history in points scored with 1,777 career points, while averaging 14.2 points per

game and 9.2 rebounds per contest for the Flames. The Flames posted a pair of 20-win seasons during his time at Liberty, including a 28-11 record during his freshman year, which ranks first in school history in wins in a season in the non-Division I era. Isaacs’ strong play as a freshman helped the Flames capture the 1980 NCCAA national championship.

MICKEY PAIGE

FOOTBALL: 1985-88

Mickey Paige, Liberty’s first NCAA Division I football All-American, set standards at Liberty that have only been matched by a fellow Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer. The Lynchburg, Va., native finished his four-year career as a Flame with 427 career tackles, which ranks second to 2012 Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame inductee John Sanders. The pair are the only two players in program history with 400 or more career tackles. Paige, a linebacker for the Flames, was a two-time All-American. He earned “Football Gazette” firstteam All-America status in 1987 and was named to the “Football Gazette” third team in 1988 during the Flames’ first year at the NCAA Division I level. Paige finished the last three years of his career posting 100 or more tackles per season. He set program records with 113 assisted tackles and four fumble recoveries in 1988 as a senior. His tackle total of 150 in 1987 still ranks second in school history, missing the program record, set in 1993, by one tackle.

SHARON [WILKERSON] EMORY

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: 1997-2000

Sharon [Wilkerson] Emory is the second member of a key three-player group to be inducted into the Liberty Athletics Hall of Fame, helping establish women’s basketball as one of the most dominant programs in school history. Emory, along with her twin sister Sarah [Wilkerson] Erps and 2009 Liberty Athletics Hall of Famer Elena [Kisseleva] Bengds, helped turn a fledgling women’s basketball program that was 5-22 prior to their arrival into a team that won four straight Big South titles. The trio also led the team to the first four of the program’s 17 trips to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The native of Princeton, W.Va., ranks fifth in program history, scoring 1,733 career points, and is the program’s all-time leader with 304 career steals. She also ranks second in career three-point field goals (172), three-point field goal percentage (36.3), and minutes played (3,712) and fourth in free throws (361) and free throw shooting percentage (77.3).

FLAMES FEATURE STORY LIBERTY FLAMES RAISE OVER $7,000 FOR “DOLLAR MAKES A DIFFERENCE” CAMPAIGN

Liberty Flames student-athletes began the 2019-20 academic year by continuing to impact the local community through the annual Dollar Makes A Difference (DMAD) Campaign.

At the beginning of each school year, student-athletes collect funds to purchase and deliver school supplies to Lynchburg area schools. This year, Liberty Athletics teams raised $7,485.59, a $2,866.92 increase from last year’s total. Liberty Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Jennifer Burris and the rest of the Academic Affairs for Athletics staff helped organize the campaign again this fall. The drive started nine years ago after a conversation Kristie Beitz, Liberty’s Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Affairs, had with a former football player and has grown into an annual competition for Liberty’s athletics teams. This year’s winning team and recipient of the Golden Ruler was the track & field team, who raised over $1,400. The Liberty softball

program finished second with over $1,200 collected. The women’s lacrosse program finished third with nearly $1,100 raised, followed by swimming & diving (nearly $600) and men’s soccer (nearly $500). Liberty student-athletes have embraced the concept of “pay it forward” by demonstrating love, care for, and service to the local community. Using the NCAA athletic platform, Flames and Lady Flames student-athletes hope to impact the lives of individuals of all ages in both public and private sectors. During the 2018-19 academic year, Liberty’s 550 Division I student-athletes provided over 11,200 hours of service through 118 community service events. This past summer, new Liberty Flames student-athletes became acclimated to the Lynchburg community through community outreach on three consecutive Saturdays in July at Park View Community Mission. Liberty student-athletes will continue to serve the Lynchburg community and surrounding area under the initiatives of #PayItForward and #FlamesGiveBack on social media throughout the 2019-20 academic year.
