The Black Hole Next Door

OPEN ON: BLACK

NARRATOR (V.O) “Floating through the milky way…”

FADE IN:

POV from a space suit, floating through our galaxy, the hands and legs slowly moving in and out of view as we look around at clusters and nebulae.

“...between 200 billion stars”

View moves around, at nebulas and stars, a distant asteroid moves from the right to the left and our eyes leave it as in the background behind it we see...

“to its centre, A supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*.”

Cue title.

“4 million times the size of our sun, there are a cluster of stars in its orbit, some going up to 3,000 miles a second.”

Mid shot - Follow one of the orbiting suns a little.

Another sun behind it on different trajectory, maybe some info lines that map their paths. Then a swipe as a sun crosses the screen.

“Closer now, and there is a blinding light, created when an inner disk of matter and gas, trying to escape the black hole, creates friction against the slower outer disk, reaching temperatures of 13000 degrees. Too hot to survive.“

“Beyond this, you approach the event horizon.”

Cross through the bright disk and into darkness. Just bits of space dust zipping past for sense of movement.

“gravity increases nearer this edge, and in the tidal forces, the closer parts of you are pulled more, stretching you out, like spaghetti the width of an atom.”

Looks down at feet. They’re stretching off away from us. More and more spiralling like a helix.

“But with a black hole this big, you could survive”

Hands come up stretched a little.

“And from another perspective, time would slow in the gravity”

Watch with blinking light, slows more and more, dusk slowing past us

“eventually to a stop”

“and the visible light waves that illuminate you, slow down, stretching, becoming redder and darker, until invisible.”

Colour changes and gets deep red/dark

“But not from your perspective”

“You soar now, towards the centre of the singularity, and when you reach it?...well you’ll have to find out”
