The Black Hole Next Door Script by Liam Shevill FADE IN: NARRATOR (V.O) Imagine your floating through the milky way. A galaxy that contains over 200 billion stars. And at its centre, Sagittarius A*. A supermassive black hole. About 4 million times the size of our sun. So big, 6 stars orbit around it That’s how we know its there. It’s all but invisible, apart from the light moving around it. Black Holes, are formed when stars get so heavy, Their own gravity causes them to collapse, becoming a singularity, trapping even light, inside. But as you get closer to the black hole. You might see the event horizon, an edge near the black hole where the gravity is once again weak enough that light can escape. Bent and warped by the pull of the nearby cosmic giant, it would light up the destroyed remains of other stars, that circle the radius. Creating a halo. Closer now, you can start to feel the pull, gravity getting stronger as you travel. The difference in gravity between your head and your toes, tugs you at different strengths, stretching you out.
With a large singularity like this, surviving this stretch is possible. But in smaller black holes, you would likely be stretched out until you exist only as a string of atoms. But I guess luck is on your side this time. Travelling ever down towards the dark titan, through its blanket of debris, the remnants of whole stars, swallowed up. Faster and faster as gravity pulls harder. In the distance, a border to absolute darkness, the event horizon. As you approach, the light that makes you visible, is being pulled in. You appear to stop frozen in time, your appearance fading as the last waves of light fail to escape. You go now towards an impossible frontier, beyond which is ... i guess you’ll just have to find out.
