The RDLMC officially opened on Thursday, September The center is located in Raub Hall Room 103, and is open from 10am to 8pm Monday through Friday. The multicultural center is named after Dr. Robert and Mrs. Dolores Lynch, former employees of LHU.

According to Wendy Stiver of the Lock Haven Express, Robert Lynch organized and was the first advisor of LHU’s Black Student Union. He also established the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Educa tion in 1970, along with the annual Robert D. Lynch Student Leader ship Development Institute.Dolores Lynch served as the director of the social work from 1970 until her re tirement in 1999. Nationwide railroad strike averted

American railroad businesses and their workers reached a tentative agreement on Sept. 15, one day before union strikes were set to begin. The issue has been nearly re solved thanks to partial pressure from the Biden administration.

The deal was reached between unions and U.S. railroads and is being reviewed by workers. Marty Walsh, U.S. Secretary of La bor, oversaw the deal between the railroads and union, which took roughly 20 hours to come to an agreement. Walsh said in an interview with Reuters that the deal was a “very nice contract” for workers. However, a hand ful of those workers continue to protest, as they are still unsatisfied with working condi tions and pay.

The rail strike was a result of slow-moving negotiations between unions representing over 100,000 workers and railroad business es over disagreements in their contracts. Ne gotiations started in the fall of 2019, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020, meetings between unions and railroads slowed down to a halt. After three years of failing to come to an agreement, workers announced the strike.

According to the Bureau of Labor Sta tistics, there are over 150,000 rail workers in the United States in 2022, a fourth of the number of rail workers in 1970. Due to this ever-shrinking amount, workers end up being on call 24/7, constantly working long shifts for most of their weeks.

The deal will increase workers’ wages by 14.1% as well as allowing workers to seek the medical care they need without railroad com panies punishing them. Of the 12 unions, only 2 of them ratified this deal.

Despite the controversy and anger coming from workers, President Biden states in the White House Rose Garden that this could open doors for better union deals in addition al industries too. “I’m optimistic that we can do this in other fields as well.”

The Queen is dead at 96

On September 8, at the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle in the U.K. According to the BBC, she died peace fully on Thursday afternoon, thus putting an abrupt end to her 70 year reign.

As expected, news of her departure has made waves all across the globe. Par ticularly, news outlets in the United States have reported on the incident heavily, and the US Open tennis tournament and the United Nations both held a moment of silence in order to honor her passing. Additionally, President Biden made a state ment on the same day send ing condolences to the royal family, who are “not only mourning their Queen, but their dear mother, grand mother, and great-grandmother.”

Being the monarch with the longest reign, it is no sur prise that many across the world have come together in order to remember her legacy. Ascending the throne on June 2, 1953, Elizabeth’s coronation was the first to be broadcasted in nearly its en tirety on television, and marked not just a shift in global interest towards the royal family but

a change to how her nation was perceived as a whole. In her time as queen, both a Hollywood movie and Blockbuster series had been made about her life, and public perception of her remained high even as her health began to steadily decline over the years.

For those unable to at tend services in person, there are other methods of pay respects to the nowdeceased. The Royal Family’s official Twitter account shared an online book of condolences where people “can send a tribute” to Her Majesty, and many more Twitter users have shared their own condolences. On line reception to her death, however, has been widely mixed, including those sharing their criticisms in regards to Elizabeth’s reign and the Royal Family as a whole.

At the time of writing, the cause of her death has not yet been released to the public. Elizabeth’s son, Charles, has been chosen to ascend the throne as King Charles III, though the time of his coronation is presently unknown.

Where’s that one from?

Movie Quote:

“You want a fair deal, you’re on the wrong planet.”

JID - “The Forever Story” Album

Review

Last semester’s movie:

Thor: Love and Thunder

The signs of JID’s full potential has been hinted at throughout his entire career. With his 2017 Dream ville debut, “The Never Story,” JID captured glimpses of intellectual and hard hitting songs that stood out among the burgeoning mumble rap scene at that time. JID’s voice is rem iniscent of Kendrick Lamar and An derson Paak, but with a higher pitch and timbre. While it is abrasive at first, his talents peek over what some could see as an issue with his music. A similar sentiment can be said about his second project “DiCaprio 2.” However, with the release of his new album, “The Forever Story,” JID marks a new high point in the young rapper’s career, as he is topical, lyri cal, and smart with his delivery. JID is able to follow through with an all around fantastic project that should be remembered for years to come.

The opening track “Galaxy” ush ers in a beautiful harmony over some light soulful keys and then abra sively cuts to a hateful and explicit phone message. It is a perfect intro duction that sets up the tone of the album.

Track 2 “Raydar” is an immediate highlight in the tracklist, as the bom bastic bass will shake any listener to their core, no matter the volume. The beat switch half way through is mind

blowing on this playful track.

On the flipside, “Crack Sandwich” is painted more serious, as it takes a microscope on JID’s dynamic with his siblings. JID explained in a post on his Twitter, this was the toughest song to write for him, and judging by the premise of the song and JID’s honesty and thoughtfulness in the lyrics, this is easy to understand

As a whole, “The Forever Story” gives rap fans a more personal look into JID as a person, as it explains his origins through family an ecdotes and emotional insights to the world. With a rock-solid tracklist and a heaping amount of skill and cre ativity from JID, “The Forever Story” is the best rap album you will hear in 2022.

“The Forever Story” also proves Dreamville is finally garnering the talent it so desperately needs to stay afloat, as JID’s only other success ful and mainstream label-mate is the label’s co-founder J Cole. While acts like Ari Lennox and EARTHGANG have acclaimed projects and some success, neither have reached the same level as Cole or JID. Hopefully this starts a new trend of Dreamville earning the same amount of respect and financial success in the rap game as other labels like Top Dawg Enter tainment or Def Jam.

D23 ‘platnium’ announcements

Disney’s official fan club, D23, is making headlines left and right with the announcements that they made on September 12, 2022 at the D23 Expo. This event was for Dis ney’s biggest fans all over the world and displayed some of the upcoming changes that are going to be happen ing in the coming year.

This coming year they are taking advantage of their 100th anniversary to make even more Disney magic in never before seen ways, with ad ditions to their parks, new movies, a new logo and so much more.

Many of these changes are focus ing on platinum. Platinum is a rare, lasting and beloved metal, much like many of Disney’s own charac ters. Mickey Mouse, one of Disney’s most notable characters, is getting a platinum outfit. They are going so far as to change the Disney logo to platinum rather than gold which will first be used in the upcoming movie Strange World, in theaters this No vember.

Disney is not just changing their brand this coming year but expand ing it even more. Disneyland is add ing two never before seen nighttime spectaculars, often a firework/light show just before the park closes, and a statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse near the Cinderella Carousel in Hong Kong. Disney World is also adding a new nighttime spectacular

at the Lagoon in EPCOT.

Three new live action remakes were also announced during the D23 event. The Little Mermaid, Haunted Mansion, and Peter Pan and Wendy are all going to come to theaters in 2023. The Little Mermaid has even sparked a casting controversy among the general public.

The D23 Expo also announced the production of a new animated series called ‘Wish’. This show is go ing to be about a kingdom in which everyone’s wishes come true and is an idea that Walt Disney worked on himself.

Disney decided to include the introduction of Disney 100: The Exhibition which is set to open on February 18 2023, starting in Pennsylvania’s own Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The Exhibition show cases items that have been locked in the Disney Archive vaults for many year, displaying artifacts from the original Disney brand and even some from beyond, including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and National Geograph ic.

D23 members also got the chance to see brand new books from Disney Publishing, new merchandise from the Decades Collection and got a pre view of the Platinum collection.

The D23 Expo has given much to Disney fans to look forward to, as shown on the D23 website.

Darling, Should I be Worried?

All has not been well on the set of “Don’t Worry Dar ling,” set to be released September 23, 2022, and Olivia Wilde is at the center of this drama. Though the film has a lot of talent and Wilde has shown herself to be capa ble of producing her vision through her previous debut “Booksmart,” Wilde’s credibility as a director appears to be on the line: her actors are ill at ease with her manage ment.

The controversy first came to light when fans started noticing the film’s main star, Florence Pugh, was not posting about the upcoming premier at the Venice Film Festival. Pugh has been very active on social media, and the promotion of each of her upcoming projects and has been followed closely since she grabbed attention for her roles in “Midsommar” (2019) and “Little Women” (2019).

Later, it was suggested that the conflict originated with the replacement of Pugh’s original costar, Shia LeB eouf, with Harry Styles. LeBeouf has been embroiled in allegations regarding sexual assault, and Wilde attempted to connect these allegations with his leaving the set, de claring she fired him due to the misconduct. In response he produced receipts to prove the statement was inaccu rate and he left of his own accord because he felt there was not sufficient rehearsal time, according to Variety.

Another note of controversy is the emphasis on sex in the film. Wilde has declared that “female pleasure” is of keen importance to the story’s arc. In her interviews, Pugh stated firmly that there was depth to the film be yond the sex, but the image of the most famous man alive going down on a woman has been central to the release trailers.

While the reality remains to be seen, some critical reviews have stated that most of the sex in the film is non-consensual, which seems very strange in light of Wilde’s statements. The movie appears to be playing on the 1950’s aesthetics and exploring the feminine horror

of living as a housewife during a time when the world https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eh1G5atXYAMPBxm?form at=jpg&name=medium was changing. The premise could appeal to audiences who enjoyed movies like the “Step ford Wives.” However, though the film employs many well loved names from Hollywood, because of all the conflict on set those same viewers might not feel comfortable supporting such a production.

As of right now, the film is ranked 38% by critics.

Art in film is a collaborative endeavor and the movie has potential, but given all the conflict, will moviegoers still want to see this drama play out on the big screen? Perhaps Wilde should be worried.

Loren Glossner’s job shadow experience

This past week, fellow Communication major Loren Glossner got the opportunity to travel to Harrisburg. During this visit to the capital Loren spent the day observing and following the 76th District State Representative Stephane Borowicz. In this reflection of the day spend at Harrisburg we will go over what she did, who she met, expectations, education, and the skills one might need to be a Representative of their district.

Loren arrived at the capital, eager to learn while observing the daily aspects of being a Representative. She was able to attend a Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness com mittee, meet Stephanie Borowicz and and hear of additions to bills listed in their agenda. However, Loren was unable to go with State Representative Borowicz to her public hearing on hydrogen’s potential as an energy source as the Veterans committee meeting took longer than expected. Once State Representative Borowicz was finished with committee meet ings she took Loren to the House floor for pictures before the introduction session for the House meeting that day.

During the pictures, Loren met an officer of the House, State Representative Bryan Cutler who serves district 100 since 2007. State Representative Cutler also gave her advice on life and education before the session began. At the beginning of

the introductions Representatives who were retiring spoke and presented a gift, before spectators in the gallery were recognized in front of the whole House. As Loren met many people throughout the day, she also met Health Chair Repre sentative of the 65th District, Kathy Rapp, who has been a member of the House since 2005.

When coming to Harrisburg, Loren had no expectations of meeting all the people she had. All she had expected was to have the best learning experience from State Representa tive Borowicz, along with getting a better understanding of how our government works. The whole day had exceeded her expectations for that day, and she was grateful for the expe rience and the opportunity to meet other State Representatives as well as see the capital.

State representatives are elected to office by the voters in their districts. When serving as state representatives they are responsible for representing the interests of their con stituents and upholding the laws and the constitution of their state. The job a state representative has includes proposing bills that can become laws. Members of both the House of Representatives and the state’s Senate can introduce bills. Once passed, they can either be signed into law or vetoed by the governor. Representatives can also vote on the annual budget proposed by the governor.

No formal education or experience is required to become a state legislator. However, a candidate for elected office should have a professional experience related to the post they are seeking. For example, a degree in political science often leads into a political career. States may also impose specific requirements regarding age or residency. A big key factor is to educate yourself on the local issues that are important to the people in your specific region, unless you would prefer to remain independent or join the political party that most represents your beliefs.

Aaron Rodgers deserves to be in the GOAT conversation

Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Jerry Rice, Lawrence Taylor. Those are some players who are considered the GOAT (Great est of all time) of the NFL (National Football League) by fans. But there’s one player who seems to fly under the radar; Aaron Rodgers.

Especially talking about the best quarterback of all time. Of course Brady, also Peyton Manning Joe Montana, and Drew Brees. For some reason Rodgers is always left out of this con versation and its hard to understand why.

We’ve all heard it, Brady has seven superbowl rings so he’s the GOAT, but Rodgers does have a case. I am not denying that seven rings is an amazing accomplish ment and most likely will not be replicat ed, but they are not the result of just one person. It takes a team to win. Brady has had a statistically top five defense for the majority of his career. Rodgers has had a top five defense once, in 2011, his first superbowl victory. People love to clown Rodgers because he seems to choke in the playoffs, but lets look at how Rodg ers performed in some of those games.

The Packers played the Arizona Car dinals in the 2015 NFC divisional round. They ended up losing in overtime 26-20. This was not Rodg ers best game only completing 24 of his 44 pass attempts, but with a minute remaining and a 4th and 20 from their own four-yard line, Rodgers hit Jeff Janis for 61-yards. Then with five ticks left, Rodgers threw a hail mary to Janis who came down with it to send the game to overtime. But the Packer defense let up a 75-yard pass play on the first play from the line of scrimmage. A couple plays later, the Cardinals scored, winning the game.

In 2016, the Packers played the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC title game and ultimately lost 44-21. It is kind of hard to win when the defense gives up 44 points and allows almost 500 yards. Rodgers put up 287 passing yards, three touchdowns, but did throw one interception. Good performance by Rodgers.

Another NFC title game in 2019 saw the Packers play the San Francisco 49ers. Again, the defense was a let down giv ing up 37 points to the 49ers and allowing almost 300 rush ing yards. Rodgers put up over 300 yards and had two touch downs versus two interceptions.

As of Week 2 of the 2022 season, Rodgers has 55,789 passing yards (ranks 10th all time), 451 passing touchdowns (ranks 5th all time), and a career passer rating of 104.4 (ranks 3rd all time). Rodg ers also has the best passer rating in a season with 122.5 in 2011, the most consecutive passes without an inter ception (402), lowest career intercep tion percentage (1.3%) only throwing 94 in his 15 full time seasons. For ref erence, Brady’s interception percent age is 1.8%, and Peyton Manning’s is 2.7%. Rodgers has also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award four times, trailing Peyton Man ning (5), and is a four-time first team all-pro. Also note that Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre for three years after being drafted in 2005.

It’s hard to understand why Rodgers is left out of the GOAT conversation with stats like these and his performance in games where he’s “choked.” It is tough to win when your defense gives up about 30 points, but Rodgers still gets the blame. I guess people think he plays defense and gave up all those points.

Sex shouldn’t be taboo in 2022

Sex has been apart of conversation since before biblical times. We’ve seen interpreta tions of sex in scripture, hieroglyphics, and depicted in artwork for thousands of years. Sex although frequently discussed in the media, is not always used in an educational or appropriate manner. We’ve all caught a glimpse of how vulgar sex is represented on Instagram. It’s truly undeniable at this point.

Media is responsible for the circulation of news, culture and ideas to a wide reach of people. Proper representation in the media has made powerful strides forward in the past decade. We’ve seen LGBTQ, disabled, and indigenous peoples starring in the media all across the country. With the legaliza tion of gay marriage and anti discrimination laws in place, we shouldnt be seeing the sexualization of minorites the way we do. The term “BBC” and “Mia Khalifa’’ are just some of the phrases contributing to the problem. But its not just skin color and culture that’s under attack. We are so commonly being thrown the sexualization of lesbian and gay relationships.

It’s important to see yourself reflected within social media because it makes you feel okay to exist. By seeing yourself prop erly represented you are free to live as your authentic self. However, when we don’t see a reflection of ourselves in the media, validation is wiped away, along with the loss of any sense of belonging.

For far too long individuals have been scrutinized for not conforming to society’s idea of what their assigned gender or race appears to be. Is it masculine presenting females? Feminine presenting male? Or is it the white muslim women in a Hijab? We have it in our power to change the way sex, sexuality and racial diveristy is discussed across our platforms. We can ban together and make change happen, but it has to start with you. How can YOU make a positive im pact?

Football gets steamrolled by Clarion during Homecoming Game

LOCK HAVEN, Pa -- The Bald Eagles struggled to pull together a win for the students and alumni who came back to the haven for the annual Homecoming Game.

The game started off in Clarion’s favor, as the Bald Eagles fumbled the opening drive. Clarion quarterback Zach Benedek was able to complete the one-yard rush for a touchdown. Clarion then went on to score another touchdown, five minutes later, when Benedek threw a 53-yard pass to wide receiver Andy Martin, earning themselves the 13-0 lead.

Lock Haven was able to respond almost immediately during their next possession. Quarterback Easton Turn er (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge (Assumption)) was able to throw a 30-yard pass to Marquon Williams (Kenosha, Wa./Bradford (Minnesota State University-Mankato). The score was now 13-7 in favor of Clarion.

With only a six-point deficit going into the second quarter, the Bald Eagles could’ve turned the game in their favor, but failed to do so. Early on in the quarter, Clarion kicker Trent McDowell kicked a 23-yard field goal, bringing their lead to 16-7. McDowell landed a kick to wide receiver Corahn Alleyne, scoring the last touchdown of the quarter. Clarion was now even more in the lead, 23-7.

On a positive note, the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Athlet ics Hall of Fame inductees were celebrated during halftime. The LHU Marching Band performed this year’s half-time show, Cirque du Soleil.

The Bald Eagles returned to the field looking fired up for the final half of the game, but unfortunately they still couldn’t make a comeback. Clarion once again end ed up with the short-field advantage, and running back Kahlil Owens took a short 1-yard run to score another

touchdown for Clarion. Wide receiver Zack Kindel pro ceeded to score another touchdown six minutes later. Clarion ended the third quarter 37-7.

As the game entered the final quarter, there was frustration on the Lock Haven bench, and Clarion was cheering themselves on, as the game seemed set in stone, marking their first win of their season. They sealed the deal with an impressive defensive game, and Alleyne scored another touchdown, giving the game a final score of 44-7.

Teams and individuals entered in the meet, along with spectators will be presented a blue and purple ribbon, and will be encouraged to wear it to help raise awareness for this cause.

As stated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness: September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month —a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the re sources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health condi tions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.
