Early Childhood Education Club hosts Trunk or Treat Levi Deitz Managing Editor lwd6497@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven’s Early Childhood Education club hosted a Trunk or Treat event for local children on October 29.

The event featured themed tables, or “trunks”, put together by several LHU clubs and organizations.

Alyssa Kline, a junior early childhood education major, is the president of the club. “The Early Childhood Club dissolved in 2016 and after some failed attempts this is the first time the club has been reinstated since. When my close friends and I decided to restart the club we decided we wanted our first event to not only involve the local schools in some way but also other clubs and organizations as well,” said Kline.

The club started reaching out to other clubs for the event back in September, and interested organizations were asked to think of a theme for their table and provide candy and fun activities for the children to do. In total, 12 clubs participated in the event.“Some of our favorite themes included Lilo and Stitch, Disney Princesses, the jungle, Doc McStuffins, and Monsters Inc,” Kline added.

Participating organizations were also eligible to win a $150 prize for whichever club was deemed to have the best design. The winning club was the Lock Haven Eagle Eye, LHU’s student newspaper. The Eagle Eye’s president and senior communication major, Kerri Hoover, stated,

“Our team put a lot of effort into creating an immersive Hawaiian luau experience for kids to enjoy,” and “I’m glad we were able to be a part of the experience and volunteer our time giving back to the local community.”

In addition to the themed tables, the Early Childhood Education club provided other activities for the children to have fun with at the event. The kids could get balloon animals, have their faces painted, play a fishing game, and make Halloween crafts.

Kline also announced that the club plans to host another Trunk or Treat next year by stating, “We plan to do the event next fall, [and] hopefully as other officers come up through the program and continue to keep the club running, they will also decide to continue to host a Trunk or Treat.”

“We are so grateful for everyone in our club who participated to help make it the event we envisioned, our professors who either came to the event with their children or judged the tables for us, and all of the other clubs who participated,” said Kline.

Students speak out against integration during Middle States open forum Kerri Hoover Managing Editor kah4338@lockhaven.edu

Lock Haven University (LHU) hosted an inperson open forum on Nov. 2 for students to raise concerns about the institution and recent Commonwealth merger.

The meeting took place in Robinson Hall of Flags and was led by Robert DeAugustine, a team reviewer from the Middle States Commision on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE serves as LHU’s institutional accreditor with the purpose of offering quality education to college students. This forum marked DeAugustine’s 20th visit to Lock Haven campus within his 40-year employment at the organization.

Representatives from LHU’s Clearfield campus were also in attendance via Zoom.

In an email promoting the event, Dean of Students George Rusczyk noted the importance of student attendance.

“Your role [as students] is significant as it provides to MSCHE the student perspective on how our institution continues to meet those standards through the delivery of learning experiences, support services, student activities, and campus life in general.”

DeAugustine opened the forum by discussing the collegiate merger that went into effect July 1. DeAugustine highlighted how the three universities - Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield - joined together to form one larger institution - the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania (CUP). DeAugustine also advocated that the integration will broaden students’ course options, allowing them to have greater access across all three campuses.

In light of integration, MSCHE insists on making sure quality educational standards are met equally throughout CUP. According to DeAugustine, the organization’s goal is to create a unified university with combined benefits so that every student has the necessary services to become successful. This was the main focal point of his visit on Wednesday.

Following his introduction, DeAugustine opened the floor for student commentary, specifically posing two questions to help guide discussion. These questions reflected the positive and negative implications of the merger as well as students’ overall concerns regarding the institutional changes.

Graduate assistant Mia Swales was the first to speak. She recognized the benefits that the merger offers from both a student and employee perspective; however, she raises concerns about the lack of student morale and engagement on campus.

“Integration provides great opportunities to expand resources for connection and network.

But, there’s no school spirit here. I don’t think this is fueled by integration; however, I wished we had Penn State University energy. We need to build community.”

Other students also expressed positive perceptions regarding the Commonwealth merger while some noted that they have not seen enough changes to make a conclusive decision.

One common complaint among students was the shortened time between classes. Before the merger, Lock Haven gave students 15 minute -

Nov. 04, 2022 break periods between courses. This allowed students enough time to walk back-and-forth from class if they had a loaded schedule. After the approved merger, students only have 10 minutes to get to classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

A Biology major who spends most of his day on East Campus mentioned that it is difficult to get to class on-time now that the time between courses decreased. He added that it is almost impossible to stay after class to speak with professors in fear of being late to his next class. The Biology major also noted his unsureness about whether LHU is the “right fit” for him.

“I feel like there is a lack of clubs on campus.

I wish there was a choir club. It feels as though I’m missing aspects of my identity and as though a part of me is missing [being at LHU].”

Another complaint appeared to radiate in the room concerning virtual learning environments. A Computer Science major noted that his program lost several students resulting in an increase of online course options.

When asked by DeAugustine if there was a greater variety of subject offerings, he denied saying that he was forced to switch his major from Cyber Security to Computer Science. Other students stated they had no problem with online courses, but would rather take in-person classes to remain more motivated and attentive.

Conversely, reports from LHU Clearfield suggest more positive online learning experiences for its campus. Interim Director Valerie Dixon vocalized her appreciation for Zoom classes as they work well for Clearfield. The branch campus operates mostly digital.

Two Communication majors also spoke negatively about online learning and expressed worry about the future of their program. Their greatest concern stemmed from the fact that upper-level management has not made attempts to hire another instructor for their department after former journalism professor Sharon Stringer retired last spring.

Because of the faculty shortage, students are forced to take writing courses remotely through Bloomsburg University. One of the students, Ashley Lawson, even advocated for the need of updated technology in the on-campus television and radio studios.

“While equipment that’s seven years old may not seem ‘old’ for people outside of a media major or career, it is, and students in our Media concentration need to have equipment that’s as close to being what they use in the field as possible.”

The meeting concluded after an hour. While disappointed with student turnout, DeAugustine thanked the participants for attending and providing their insights. He assured students that their responses will be reported to higher officials within the university.

‘The Assassin’s Blade’ is not worth it Kayla LeBeau A&E Editor kml4679@lockhaven.edu “The Assassin’s Blade” by Sarah J. Maas is full of mystery, intrigue and romance. However, it is meant to explain some missing information rather than simply entertain, and is set to move at a fast pace that is ultimately unnecessary and feels rushed.

This book is a prequel to the “Throne of Glass” series and gives some explanations about some strange characters and events in the main character’s life before she was thrown into prison.

This book is divided into five separate stories “The Assassin and the Pirate Lord,” “The Assassin and the Healer,” “The Assassin and the Desert,” “The Assassin and the Underworld” and “The Assassin and the Empire.” However, the stories were never sold together and simply an efficient way for the reader to find what story they are looking for when they are reading the series.

Celaena Sardothien has a good heart, a very strong mind and was raised as an assassin. These three factors bring her face-to-face with many monsters of her own, making each one outlined in the titles of each mini-story within this book.

“The Assassin and the Pirate Lord” shows us Celaena’s big heart and dangerous skills as she fights her way through dangerous territory to free people that she has no affiliation toward.

In “The Assassin and the Healer,” she

inspires another woman to take control of her life, even when she feels lost in her own life.

“The Assassin and the Desert” brings Celaena face to face with one of the biggest challenges of her life, The Silent Assassins. She must remain patient as she waits for the master of the Silent Assassins to train her, which tests her stubbornness and makes her reconsider her overconfident attitude.

“The Assassin and the Underworld” finally gets Celaena away from her master and on her own with Sam, until Sam is captured and she ends up back at her master’s door.

“The Assassin and the Empire” gives readers the details about what she does to get arrested and set off the events of the series.

Overall, this book is merely a way for Maas to use a series of coincidences to help fill in some major plot-holes in a story that she started writing when she was 16. The most significant plothole being: how did Celaena get so many powerful allies who would lay down their lives for her when she seemed to spend all of her time pre-prison making enemies and shopping?

This particular book is not worth the read on its own, but if anyone starts to read the “Throne of Glass” series first, which takes place after Celaena gets out of prison, it becomes a real page-turner.

Midnight: Revolutionary or Regressive?

Taylor Swift’s latest album, Midnight, received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans alike, although there are some who argue aspects have regressed from her older albums.

In Midnights, Swift explores a songwriting experiment about thirteen midnights, and the reasons why someone would be up at that hour. It overall matches her familiar sounds but mixes in more synthetic sounds than previous albums feature.

The album opened with Lavender Haze, a Lover-era song about finding a safe partner, and the dichotomy in straight relationships where there is a MadonnaWhore complex, summarized with the phrase, “they either want a one-night stand or a bride.”

Swift has addressed feminist themes in her previous work, using the theory to elaborate her personal experience. She addresses a similar framework in another album song Midnight Rain.

Midnight Rain used a synthetic voice that contrasts Swift’s past vocal styles, but the structure of the song remains familiar to her regular style. The electronic vocal manipulation was also included in the background of multiple other sounds, but it is most prominent in Midnight Rain.

Swift’s lived experience is also highlighted in her song Anti-Hero, which deals with the idea that someone is their own worst enemy. The language throughout touches on some trending conversations about living in a villain era, and the imposter syndrome that comes with success.

In fact, across the album, Midnights acknowledges some of the criticism Swift has received for causing drama in her private and public life. Sonically, Midnights parallels past albums and expands Swift’s continuing autobiography through her music, a change from her previous two albums Folklore and Evermore.

For those who are feeling energetic or in need of energy should consider listening to songs that are upbeat, and fast paced. When people listen to music that has the same energy, it may be beneficial when trying to get in the zone of an activity or set goals like in the gym. The purpose of creating this playlist was to provide songs for listeners in need of power or feeling energetic. There are a total of five songs on the playlist that are full of energy with intense beats and lively tempos.

“Pump It” by Black Eyed Peas Those who listen to the song find themselves pumped up and ready for all that life brings. The song breaks into several segments for each member of the group incorporating different techno sounds.

This musical track is the first featured in the “Monkey Business” album released 2005. Other hype songs not mentioned from this band include “I Gotta Feeling” and “Imma Be.” “Untrust Us” by Crystal Castles Released in 2008, majority of Crystal Castles’ fans find it difficult to comprehend the lyrics even with the repetition of the melody. The lyrics are spoken in Spanish “La cocaína no es buena para su salud” and translates to “The cocaine is not good for you” in English. In terms of sound quality of the background music feels distorted leaving listeners in a trance.

“Futsal Shuffle 2020” by Lil Uzi Vert This single was released in 2019. Vert’s monotone voice blends smoothly with the rapid beat that loops throughout the whole song. Therefore, the song feels everlasting. With the use of techno sounding background music enhances the listener’s

urge to dance or headbang. Another striking song from this artist is “Money Longer.”

“Heads will Roll” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs A commonly used song to prepare people interested in rave events. Since the track features intense beats and rhythms, individuals may feel controlled by the music playing. The repetition of lyrics “Off with your Head” will leave listeners feeling like the Queen of Hearts from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.

“Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, Lauren Benn, GoonRock As stated in the title, this song has been a classic party anthem since 2011 because of the ability to make people dance and vibe out. It would be disappointing if by the end of the song no one has shuffled on the dance floor. Other songs from LMFAO that can make listeners hyped are “Champagne Showers” and “Sexy and I Know It.” Music has the capability of evoking certain emotions in listeners. Individuals feeling lively and full of energy should listen to songs with a predominant beat and face paced tempos. Less talking, more eating: How to keep Thanksgiving peaceful Alex Ross News Editor amr1884@lockhaven.edu

Thanksgiving has a long history in America, with the holiday existing in some form for over 400 years.

A family dinner on this federal day of celebration should bring everyone closer together and create memorable moments for everyone involved. However, awkward conversations are bound to happen at some point, especially considering how different each family member is. To keep things amicable, are a few subjects no one should bring up at the dinner table.

Politics - Nothing can divide a dinner table more than conversations about current political issues. Politics are very important in the world, but some people are extremely passionate about expressing political views, no matter how contrarian they may be compared to the rest of the family. Maybe it would be best to hide those Joe Biden signs in the yard and withhold any jokes about the recent election, as getting into a fight with an uncle is not how anyone wants to spend their Thursday evening.

Divorce or break ups - Whatever happened to Aunt Diedre’s boyfriend? Wasn’t cousin Eddie supposed to

be getting married too? Questions like these can come to mind at the dinner table, but what some fail to realize is how asking such questions may not be a great idea. People process break-ups or divorces very differently from one another, and simply talking about it could bring up bad memories for them. There is a right place and time for those kinds of conversations, and the Thanksgiving dinner table is neither.

Religion - Discussing religion at the dinner table is not always a bad idea. Religion can bring many families and friends together and cultivate positivity. However, it can also become a slippery slope for negativity and fighting. Different belief systems can cause friction between some people, so the best option for everyone involved is to skip the subject.

How bad the food is - Thanksgiving is a time of celebration with the entire family, but nothing can sour the holiday joy more than insulting an aunt’s cooking.

It doesn’t matter if grandma’s green bean casserole is any good, nobody at the table wants to see her become disappointed in her hard work. If a family member makes a remark about how rubbery the mac n’ cheese is and are met with silence, perhaps it would be best to change the topic to something else.

Divisive topics can be difficult to avoid, especially when they are tied to a family member’s job or lifestyle. The best option for many is to try and curtail those topics and talk about neutral subjects like sports, a movie you watched and enjoyed, or even recent trips a family member may have made. However, if Thanksgiving does diverge into irreparable chaos and tears the entire family apart, at least those caught in the middle can leave the table and watch some football.

Every day of the year has the potential for something newsworthy to happen. Whether it be an ancient discovery or a historic election result, there’s always going to be some event that makes a date special. Here are two events that make November 4 a day worthy of remembering.

1922, Archaeologists find entrance to King Tutankhamun’s tomb Ancient Egypt is a subject of much interest to modern day historians and archaeologists. In 1922, a team of archaeologists and excavators led by Egyptologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, more widely known as King Tut. According to National Geographic, King Tut was almost completely unknown to the world before the discovery of his burial chamber in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. Most tombs in the Valley of the Kings had been plundered centuries earlier, but the entrance to Tut’s was obstructed by debris. Over 5,000 objects were found in the tomb, ranging from jewelry and clothing to weapons and a chariot. King Tut was also the first perfectly preserved mummy to be found, according to history.com.

1924, Nellie Tayloe Ross becomes first woman elected governor Nellie Tayloe Ross was born in 1876 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was educated in both private and public schools throughout her childhood, and eventually became a kindergarten teacher after graduating high school in 1892. In 1900, she met William Bradford Ross, with whom she formed a relationship and eventually married in 1902.

Bradford Ross would go on to be elected the 12th Governor of Wyoming in 1922. He served for two years before dying of complications of an appendectomy in 1924, and was succeeded by Frank Lucas, the Secretary of State of Wyoming.

Tayloe Ross was nominated as the Democratic candidate for a special election held in 1924, and became the first woman in the U.S. to be elected governor. Although she never held an elected office again after losing the 1926 election, she was appointed Director of the United States Mint by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She held this position from 1933 until her retirement in 1953.

Taylor Ross died on December 19, 1977 at age 101.

Every day brings something new, so whatever is happening today is going to be an event that future generations look back on as a significant, world-changing event.

Taurus - Relatives you have not seen since last year may try to invade the sacred sanctity of your room. Do not let them in under any circumstances. Tell them to take their hide-and-seek game with your younger siblings out into the living room.

Gemini - It is important not to let yourself become a target during the holiday. Being passive will only land you in the same situation as previous years, so it is best to avoid confrontation with your relatives altogether and stay locked in your room.

Cancer - You may want to criticize the chef’s cooking. Do not.

This will cause more trouble than it will resolve and make your aunt feel miserable about her “creative” variant of casserole. Though she deserves to feel awful, you should still hold some decorum.

Leo - You may feel like a side dish, but you’re the main course.

Do not let the corn or potatoes outshine you, and be the turkey you were born to be.

Virgo - Between the young children trying to get your attention and the drunk old people yelling at football, you’re gonna have a lot of different people to deal with. Find a place where no one will bother you and stay there.

A student’s perspective on balancing a job and schoolwork Shi-Anne Hockenberry Design & Ads Manager srh3077@lockhaven.edu

Working full-time while also being a student is a big undertaking. Speaking for myself, trying to manage working a total of 2040 hours per week, taking five courses and being a part of two clubs can be overwhelming.

I know for myself that working is a necessity for my lifestyle. I am not one to take out a loan to pay my bills while in school. I personally have two jobs to pay all my bills by the end of the month. Sometimes I am working as much as I can while picking up extrashifts just trying to make ends meet.

But since I am a full-time student I also need to make time for school. Because of my demanding lifestyle, I navigate around my work and school schedule. I try to plan my weekly schedule for school ahead of time because professors give out deadlines for assignments due ahead of time.

Depending on each week’s workload and work schedule, I dedicate evenings and the entirety of Fridays to work on assignments for my college courses. Planning my schedule a week in advance helps to balance working an hour away every Saturday and Sunday.

Having a fixed schedule gives me enough time to attend school events and be an active club member.

It is worthwhile to plan ahead to know your own availability, especially in terms of group projects and other school-related work to leave no room for possibilities for procrastination.

While speaking with Connor Rossman, full-time student who works full-time, described his busy day-to-day life as “It is constantly making decisions and knowing how to devote your time.” Rossman explained how he works around working full-time and doing school, “You need to have the discipline to manage time to get everything you need to get done before stepping into the workplace”. By keeping to a strict schedule Rossman admits to feeling less stressed and overwhelmed.

For full-time working students like me you want to have discipline and time management. Picking a day to plan the following week accordingly is the best way to keep yourself accountable with due dates and other deadlines.

Common Place is the place for Christian students on campus Connor Jackson Staff Writer cxj9249@lockhaven.edu

One of the more interesting clubs on campus that people may not know very much about is Common Place College Ministry. Common Place is an amazing club to join if you are a Christian or somebody who has questions about religion.

Pastor Bill Corbin leads bible studies every Wednesday night at Avenue 209 to help students seek Christ. It does not matter how well someone knows the Bible; all students are more than welcome to come and ask as many questions if desired. Do not be afraid to come hungry either, there are delicious meals prepared before every bible study around 6:30 p.m.

“I think the club is a great way to grow in your faith. All members are given the chance to study the Bible together every week,” stated by club member Maddie Niebauer. There is a very loving and familiar atmosphere among the group at Common Place. Not only is it a great way to grow spiritually, but it is an amazing way to be able to make friends and connect with other Christians.

Common Place offers Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. at Avenue 209 coffee shop in downtown Lock Haven. Another location to consider visiting if interested in religion is at the Piper Aviation Museum at 10 a.m.

The pastors Chad Long at Avenue and Josh Grimes at Piper are great preachers that will help anyone understand God’s word on a deeper and spiritual level.

Common Place is not shy to put themselves out there. Do not be surprised if you see club members handing out food and goodies at random spots around campus.

The club also loves holding fun events for the students. These fun events include festivals like Camp League, where clans compete and grow as a team. Along with hosting pumpkin carving events to celebrate Halloween, and fun game nights ormovie nights throughout the fall and spring semesters.

Overall, the Common Place College Ministry is something every student should check out. Who can complain about free food, fun activities, and genuine people?

Field Hockey Closes Season in A-10 Semifinal Against UMass Adam Kaylor Assistant Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing ank4635@lockhaven.edu AMHERST, Mass. – The Lock Haven field hockey team (12-7) capped a historic season in the Atlantic 10 (A-10) postseason against the No. 2 seed Massachusetts (14-5). The Minutewomen took the semifinal showdown, 4-2, but the Bald Eagles close 2022 with the program’s most wins since 2015 and an undefeated home record for the first time since 2003.

Making their third A-10 semifinal appearance in the last four years, the Bald Eagles got locked into a defensive first period. Neither side managed a shot as both defenses were up to the task in the win or go home matchup.

Early in the second period, Jazmin Palma (Entre Rios Providence Argentina/Colegio Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) gave Lock Haven the 1-0 lead from the penalty spot when she slotted it past the UMass goalkeeper.

Yesterday (Nov. 2), Palma was named to the First-Team in the A-10 for the third time in her three seasons as a Bald Eagle.

The Minutewomen responded quickly and knotted things up at 1-1 when Jess Beech finished off a wellworked penalty corner in the 25th minute.

After the scoreless opening period, the action heated up in the second and UMass notched another goal from Paula Lorenzini off a penalty corner to pull ahead 2-1 with just a minute remaining in the half.

In an exhilarating second period, the two teams combined for 16 total shots, 10 penalty corners and three goals.

The No. 21 nationally-ranked Minutewomen picked up right where they left off in the second half and took a 3-1 advantage when Steph Gottwalls beat the keeper in the 33rd minute.

Giving The Haven life, it was Palma again from the penalty spot in the 40th minute with her 10th goal of the year to cut the UMass lead back to 3-2.

The Minutewomen, however, hit right back just a minute later when Mia Smith reestablished a two-goal lead at 4-2.

After the explosion of the second and third periods, the final period died down and despite The Haven’s best efforts to mount a comeback, UMass held on for the final minutes to take home the 4-2 victory.

UMass advances to Saturday’s (Nov. 5) final against the No. 1 seed Saint Joseph’s, who defeated VCU earlier in the day.

The Minutewomen held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots on the day, but Lock Haven held a distinct 11-6 lead in penalty corners. Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, N.Y./Whitney Point) led all players with six shots as she searched for a Lock Haven goal.

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Atlanta Falcons hosted the Carolina Panthers for an NFC South showdown. The Falcons (4-4) grabbed the lead over the Panthers (2-6) just minutes into the fourth quarter, but a backand-forth shootout saw the game head to overtime tied at 34 a piece. The Falcons took the win in overtime off a game winning field goal.

The Panthers got on the board first on a 37-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro. Atlanta got on the board in the second quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota to tight end Kyle Pitts.

Running back D’Onta Foreman scored from two yards out to give the Panthers a 10-7 lead. Carolina regained possession but linebacker Lorenzo Carter picked off quarterback PJ Walker and took it back for six to give the Falcons a 14-10 lead at the break.

The Panthers tacked on a 42yard field goal on their opening possession of the second half.

Mariota hit running back Tyler Allgeier for a 25-yard touchdown catch, increasing Atlanta’s lead to 21-13.

Foreman bulldozed in from one-yard out and successfully completed the two-yard rush for the two point conversion tying the game at 21.

Atlanta received the ball back and were at midfield after one play after a 30-yard run by Caleb Huntley.

The Falcons tacked on a 30-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo. On the Panthers next drive, Walker hit wide receiver Terrance Marshall for a 39-yard gain. The big pass play led to a 12-yard touchdown run by Foreman. The Falcons responded with a long touchdown. Mariota hit

wide receiver Damiere Byrd in the middle of the field, who then out ran the Carolina secondary for a 47-yard touchdown. The Falcons took a 31-28 lead with 2:14 remaining.

Atlanta tacked on a 34-yard field goal after stopping Carolina on fourth-down. With just over twenty seconds remaining, Walker hit wide receiver DJ Moore for the 62-yard touchdown tying the game up 34-34, extra point pending. Moore was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for taking his helmet off after scoring the touchdown.

That made the extra point a 48-yard attempt. Pineiro missed the extra point sending the game to overtime.

Atlanta received the ball first in overtime. Mariota was picked off by defensive back CJ Henderson, who returned the ball back to Atlanta’s 22-yard line. Carolina brought out Pineiro for a 32-yard field goal that would win the game. Pineiro missed the kick, keeping the Falcon’s hopes of winning alive. The Falcons drove down to the Carolina 23-yard line and brought out Koo for the 41-yard game winning field goal.

FOR(3)MAN: Carolina running back D’Onta Foreman ran for 118-yards in the game and also scored three touchdowns.

UP NEXT: The Falcons host the Los Angeles Chargers (4-3) on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m. The Panthers travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals (4-4) on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m.

MSOC: Hershey named Athlete of the Year, four Bald Eagles earn All-Conference honors Doug Spatafore Senior Director of Athletic Communications & Marketing dspatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Today (Nov. 3), the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) released its 2022 AllConference Teams and, for the second year in a row, the Lock Haven men’s soccer team has taken home the Eastern Division Athlete of the Year as forward Samuel Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) earned the award for the 2022 season.

Hershey was also honored on the PSAC Eastern Division First-Team All-Conference and was joined on the first team by midfielder Connor Swope (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York).

On the second team, Aitor Ruiz de Eguilaz (Euskadi, Spain/Koldo Mitxelena (Robert Morris)) took home the award in goal and freshman midfielder Jimmy Pombor (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) was also honored.

For head coach Patrick Long (‘08) and the Bald Eagles, it marks the first time since 1993 that The Haven has brought home PSAC Athlete of the Year honors in back to back seasons. It is also the third-year in a row that Lock Haven has earned one of the three major awards from the conference.

For the sophomore Hershey, it marks his second appearance on the All-PSAC First-Team and his second major award, as he brought home PSAC East Rookie of the Year during his freshman campaign. During the 2022 regular season, Hershey posted a team-high and conference thirdbest 11 goals. He also added four assists for a conference fifth-best 26 points.

Swope makes his first appearance on the All-PSAC team after a breakout sophomore season. The midfielder was second on the team in points and goals notching 14 and 5, respectively. Swope also tied for the team-high with four assists and served as a key attacking midfielder for the Bald Eagles.

For Ruiz de Eguilaz, it’s his second straight PSAC honor as he continued to anchor The Haven defense in 2022. His goals against average of 1.079 and save percentage of .781 were both fourth in the PSAC. The Bald Eagles senior also notched four shutouts in 2022 which seated him in a tie for fourth-place in the conference.

The freshman midfielder Pombor earned his spot on the second-team after a strong rookie campaign in which he started 15 games for The Haven. From his place deep in the Bald Eagle midfield, Pombor provided two assists while adding crucial support to the back line and linking attack and defense together for The Haven.

On Wednesday (Oct. 26), the Bald Eagles capped the 2022 season in style with a 3-0 win over visiting Shepherd and the quartet of All-PSAC honorees shined. Hershey provided a goal and an assist, while Swope and Pombor both handed out an assist. Ruiz de Eguilaz came out in the 88th minute of a team clean sheet and made two saves.
