Public Safety: We are prepared for hostile threats on campus Kyra Smith-Cullen News Editor ksmithcu@lhup.edu There are a rise in campus shootings across the nation appearing in the news. Students at LHU can feel more at ease to know that campus security is prepared for any hostile threat that may occur.

“We are always vigilant about the safety of our students,” said Paul Altieri, LHU’s Director of Public Safety.

Though the university has yet to experience any threat, campus security works with surrounding police forces to ensure that it is ready to deal with dangerous situations. active shooter training sessions with partment, State Police barracks and Pine Creek township,” Altieri said.

“During the summer, we have a three or four day training that takes place in

one of the unused dorms on campus.”

If there is a shooter or bomb threat, the university has systems in place to alert students and faculty of the situation. One method is the e2Campus messaging system which, when signed up for, will text and Public Safety. register for the e2Campus program.

However, if there is an emergency, Public Safety has an intercom system to alert everyone,” said Altieri. “It is set up so that all university phones will ring, even if they are already in use, and a message will broadcast In the event of a situation, surrounding areas will respond to deal with the crises.

If students see a shooter or become aware of a threat, they should notify Public Safety immediately. This can be done either through the yellow call boxes located around campus or by

dialing 711 on any university phone.

Recently, Purdue University, South Carolina State University, Widener University and Eastern Florida State College all experienced campus shootings since the beginning of the Spring 2014 semester.

The University of Oklahoma also issued a campus wide warning in response to a shooter which turned out to be a false alarm.

Students interested in learnprocedures should visit Public Safety’s sponse Guide’ pamphlet. The guide thoroughly explains how to react in various emergency situations such as bomb threats, campus shooters and suspicious persons on campus.

News in higher education The Haven is looking school year.

Without any increases from this year’s revenue, the university is expecting about $68.8 million.

Expenses, however, are estimated at $72.4 million. That leaves $3.4 million unaccounted for.

Seven permanent faculty members and 12.25 nonfaculty staff members would not be replaced under this plan.

Also, the university plans for a reduction of $700,000 in temporary faculty overload.

Gov. Corbett decided to keep higher education funding at the same level it’s been at for the past two years.

PASSHE schools will

get about $412.8 million if this budget is passed.

There are two more steps in the process.

The proposed budget will be heard at hearings for the House Appropriations Committee at 9:30 a.m. and the Senate at 1:00p.m. Feb. 20.

Ken Marshall stated in a press release that at both hearings.

Corbett also implemented $25 million toward the merit- and income-based “Ready to Succeed” state scholarship.

The university is currently phasing out the music education major. It will no longer be accepting new students in the major.

LHU is currently integrating a new master’s program in the health sciences.

It will be a Master of Health Sciences with two tracks: health promotion/education and healthcare management.

This major is unique among the PASSHE schools.

It is also incorporating an Associate of Arts in environmental studies.

The Haven already offers this program as a minor, but the new major will also be unique among PASSHE schools.

Studies will include conservation, conservation law and ecology.

The screening of the documentary will be a nation-wide event for campuses across the country. The screening will be accompanied by a discussion with former Secretary of Labor and

Spencer McCoy Staff Writer smccoy@lhup.edu Beck has been brewing up something special for the alternative rock and “Waking Light” a few days ago. I have never been a huge fan of Beck’s music. His style at times was too awkward for me. I made sure to set my previous opinion of his music aside when I began listening. It’s a good thing I did because “Blue Moon” and “Waking Light” were jaw dropping. hear are “I’m so tired of being alone”. The smooth mesh of happy melodies with a bass and drum line that demands to be taken seriously shows a true style that much of Beck’s music seems to follow.

continues to sing “You left me standing all alone”. The seriousness of this song is masked well. I think it has a lot to do with hope. The hope that things will get better. As the song fades all I could think of was “wow”. Beck has truly outdone himself on this song. This was the best song I have heard him put out in a long time. The song shows a new style of Beck’s musical talents while still holding onto some of the quirky roots he is so well known for.

“Waking Light”- the last song on the new album deserves that spot written all over it. Beck and his band are backed by a strong orchestra to help emphasise the amplitude of the song. The slow echo of lyrics provides a beautiful touch to its entirety. The band has grown vastly since their last albums.

Their previous music has been pretty decent compared to some of the new stuff we are hearing from them.

When it comes to sex our biggest concerns revolve around being safe. The idea of taking a trip to the free clinic or suffering through a pregnancy test scares most of us into stocking up on birth control every chance we get.

Obviously important, but there is more to ‘being safe’ than just condoms and the pill.

We do everything we can to protect our bodies during moments of intimacy, but what are we doing to protect our emotions? No matter the terms of a sexual relationship there isn’t much we can do to protect ourselves from what seems to be inevitable: getting hurt.

Every relationship starts out great; buttertalked about at your wedding. But not every rela-

tionship will make it to the reception.

Maybe it’s just a girl thing or something that comes from too many disastrous relationships, but the thought of tears over another ‘thing’ that doesn’t work out is repulsive.

Other than convincing ourselves that we ‘just don’t care’ or reading yet another advice column on how to control feelings, there isn’t much that we can do to prevent a bit of sadness. Whether life-long relationship, emotions need to become a priority.

The relationships that seem to have been a waste of time might be regrettable, but are more than just heartbreak, tears, and bottles of wine.

When we’ve experienced the jerk, the clingy, the sweetheart, the obnoxious, and just about every other type there is out there, we know exactly what we want, hopefully.

To protect our emotions we need to remember what it is we’ve been through and what it is we

don’t want to experience again. If you know you’re not good with being a weekend hookup, don’t be a weekend hookup.

Don’t agree to be a only a friends with you are the type to develop feelings. Knowing what you deserve is the to meeting your other half without all the in between drama.

We do everything we can to keep ourselves from the dangers of unprotected sex but it seems that we are all too eager to tear down our own walls for a bit of fun. There’s no condom we can slide over our heart to protect it from damage but we can stand for what we want.

Get back on the track this semester Lisa Conner Staff Writer lconner@lhup.edu Staying physically active during the winter months can be a major challenge. The temperature is low, the wind chill is harsh and the snow seems to fall without an end in sight. The coziness of your room or apartment is so much more enticing than venturing out to the gym. The same routine can get very boring after a while, so you decided you can some helpful tips to keep your workweek.

On day one at the gym focus on cardio with running or on the elliptical. Aim for at least 25 to 30 minutes on the treadmill or the elliptical. A successful workout is at least 20 minutes in the heart rate zone so aim for a little above for a more intensive workout. If you like to run but the treadmill is too boring for you try a 10:10:10; 10 minutes on the treadmill, 10 minutes around the track and then your last 10 minutes on the treadmill again. This change in location and scenery will help keep you motivated. I know sometimes at mill. It’s ok to use the elliptical, just up the intensity level for a better and tougher workout.

On day two hit up the weight room. There is usually a student worker at the desk by the entrance who is capable of showing you some different lifts and how to use the machines. For the best result focus on a full body workout. Do some parallel squats with either the machine or the free weights. Make sure you do some bicep curls and triceps extensions. Or consider bench pressing to work your arms, chest and your core.

Throw in some ab exercises after and don’t forget to stretch after. One of

the great things about lifting is that it burns more calories than a cardio workout and continues to burn them after you are done working out.

For day three visit the pool in Zimmerli. Lap swim times are are not a great swimmer that’s ok.

Start out slow and take a break between each lap. Eventually you will build up your and endurance. They key here is slow and steady. There are also kick boards available if you are not that comfortable swimming.

This exercise is great even for those who are great swimmers. This focus’ on your leg muscles. Make sure you hold the kick board out in front of you with your hands towards the bottom on each side and kick away.

For those of you that do a lot of running aqua jogging is also a great idea because it is good and easy on your joints.

Day four try the Body Work great motivator when you have someone leading and pushing you. The social aspect of this workout will be a great change of pace. These classes are great for friends to go to together. Even if your friends don’t make it, this is a great opportunity to meet new people. A great perk to these workout classes is that you can commit yourself to them. You can tell yourself that the others in the class will expect you there so that way it completely different and more fun.

Spend some time working your legs and upper body by climbing the rock wall. Get some friends together and play racquetball or a basketball game.

These versatile workout ideas will make it much easier to stay in shape during these dreary winter months.

Love, every day of the year

I’m someone who has a hard, cynical center where others have something like a gooey faith in the human race. However, my saving grace is a decadent blanket of optimism, fueled largely by a belief in love.

I’ve abandoned all the pretty dreams Disney and the like painted into my head during childhood about love. By their reports, it comes only in a few forms and it’s always pretty formulaic. In reality, love isn’t as contrived as that. It’s not the clever calculation that authors and actors and advertisers would love for you to buy into. There is no recipe for love, no handbook and certainly no almanac.

Really, love comes when it wants, in whatever form it wants and brings with it whatever delight or havoc it so chooses. Love lifts us up and beats us back down again. It consumes us and leaves us feeling hopelessly empty in its absence.

Love is the most powerful force at work in life; those who never love also never really live.

Without love, we wouldn’t have passion for anything. We would never tirelessly chase anything.

History’s mysteries would go unsolved, disease would run rampant, music would suck and don’t even get me started on the consequences for the culinary arts. Were love vacuumed out of this world, it would become an oppressively dull and dreary place to exist.

So love itself isn’t something you can really choose not to believe in. Love exists and it does amazing things. And just as we celebrate the people and moments that make life great, we ought to celebrate love. There ought to be time set aside for all of us to just spend with whatever or whoever we love.

But Valentine’s Day isn’t it.

Valentine’s Day is a bastardization of love and not just because it creates ridiculous expectations that can be toxic to relationships. Far beyond all those disgusting candy hearts and Kay Jewelers commercials, Valentine’s Day celebrates the most unstable offspring of love—couples—and can leave

people whose love lies elsewhere to question whether their love is as nobly directed.

It’s not bad to be a couple. That’s great. The thing of it is, couples already have a day set aside to dedicate to each other. It’s called an anniversary and if I’m not mistaken, that’s why they’re celebrated. If your love is so special, why throw it at your beloved on a day you have to share with nearly the whole world?

Plus, couples can love more than just one another. These other passions deserve a forum to be shared. If you love baking, you should have a baking day and if you love sleeping, you should have a sleeping day. Painters get painting days, lovers get anniversaries and sadists get Black Friday.

Valentine’s Day corrupts our notion of love by highlighting only the romantic sort. Love far that you love and celebrating that.

Mr. Harry Nilsson took the United States by storm, yet very few people today have heard of him. He

“Pandemonium Shadow Show.” The band was awestricken. Part of what impressed them may have been Nilsson’s masterful cover of their own song “You Can’t Do That.”

Shortly after hearing the album, John Lennon and Paul McCartney held a press conference in 1968 to announce the formation of their new multimedia venture, Apple Corps.

There, both men were asked to name their favorite American artist and group. To each, both answered, “Nilsson.”

Shortly after, John Lennon called Nilsson to praise him personally for “Pandemonium Shadow Show”; he claimed to have listened to it for 36 hours straight. Paul McCartney called

the following day, also expressing admiration.

“Pandemonium Shadow Show” was born when Nilsson quit his day job to pursue music, a risk that would yield great reward. Eventually a message came inviting Nilsson to London to meet The Beatles, watch them at work and possibly sign with

UK. There, he formed a lifelong friendship with all of The Beatles, most notably John Lennon and Ringo Starr.

After spending time with his idols, Nilsson returned home and wrote the Grammy-winning album Nilsson Schmilsson.

In 1973, Harry Nilsson and John Lennon both moved to California, where the two musicians rekindled their friendship. Lennon made it his goal to produce Harry Nilsson’s next album, bringing much delight to Nilsson. However, their time together in California became known much more for heavy drinking than it did for musical collaboration. In a widely publicized incident, the two were

kicked out of a nightclub for drunken heckling at a Smothers Brothers reunion show. To make matters worse, later that same week Nilsson ruptured a vocal cord during a late night jam session. He hid the injury for fear that Lennon would halt production ceived warmly.

In an effort to clean up, Lennon, Nilsson, and Ringo Starr rented a house together. There, Harry and Ringo’s friendship grew to such a level that Ringo was best man at Harry’s wedding. The two even had a secret password to get into each other’s estate to hang out.

Ringo would later say that Harry’s friendship and his music inspired The Beatles. Lennon thought of

celebrated Harry Nilsson and his work, but for some reason, we aren’t.

Nilsson was one of America’s greatest composers and musicians. We can’t allow his work to be silenced.

Legends only come around so often in a lifetime.

This new season brought about many changes which included a new judge (Harry Connick Jr., taking the place of long time judge Randy Jackson), a new elimination round and changes in the future rounds of the competition. These factors promise to make for an exciting, fresh competition

It is a pain far worse than I have ever experienced returning from any other break. When you return to campus the weather is still cold, dark and dismal with tones of misery as classes begin to overtake our lives. You say “good-bye” to the copious amount of free time you had during break and “hello” to every paper, problem and book a professor can throw at you. Remember those glorious midday naps you might have had the privilege to enjoy over break? Well, forget about them, because they’re just a distant memory now.

When you return in August, you know, from summer break, it’s warm and stays light out until almost seven o’clock at night. In January, it is bitter cold and holiday worth celebrating. And we do, with porch parties, hitting the dike and enjoying the nightlife that the city of Lock Haven has to offer. In January, Syllabus Week is only for the bravest of warriors, willing to challenge the notion of frostbite and perhaps crazy enough to walk from campus to South Fairview or West Main Street.

My point is, coming back from winter break bites and your mommy or daddy is not here to hold you while you curl up into the fetal-position and cry like a newborn baby. So get ready for your professors to drop enough knowledge of history, science, math and grammar to make even the strongest of men beg for their lives. This is the hardest return that any college student has to make, hands down Even though the work is about to pile on and there is no sign of it getting any warmer any time soon, you still have a few things going for you.

First off, while it is not going to warm up any time soon, you can feel good about the fact that it will eventually turn to spring. The days of being outside and enjoying the college life with your friends are on the way; you just need to be patient.

Second, your professors are not all that bad. I have had quite a few of the professors here on campus and I can honestly say that the majority of them are here to help you, not hurt you. Talk to them, ask them questions and tell them what you are dealing with; they will be as understanding and forgiving as they can be.

Finally, your friends are always there to sympathize with you. They know your pain and you can help each other struggle through the seemingly impossible task of passing this semester. As a famous Disney movie would say,“we’re all in this together.” Even if it is colder than a witch’s—eh, you get the idea.

Hollywood week would not turn out in favor of London; he was ultimately sent home after not making it through group rounds. During the solo performance portion of Hollywood week, London decided to sing “If I Were A Boy” for the judges, a song about someone being able to be line stereotypes. Judges Connick and Lopez talked throughout the performance making comments about the song being a choice and not an impressive one.

They asked him why he chose that song and London replied, “I had a really good reason for singing that song. I think it’s a general message for everyone not to judge anybody else because nobody knows where you started from.” After the show ended, Twitter blew up over the judges’ comments. Many felt London was the victim of discrimination. With his statement, he had come out of the

closet on national television.

London was not given a fair opportunity in the competition because he is an openly gay man who expressed his orientation. He wasn’t looking for attention, but rather simply acceptance by the panel based on his musical abilities, not his personal choices. American Idol claims to be accepting of all people regardless of sex, gender or orientation. I beg to differ.

Viewers at home were not even given the opportunity to see his group performance. Quite a coincidence that it was one day after his coming out performance aired, isn’t it American Idol? It wasn’t a big deal when Candice Glover sang one of Bruno Mars’ songs last season.

London was not given a fair chance because he chose to perform a song resents, yet the judges chose to send him home for it.

After leaving the show, London’s popularity seemed to grow almost overnight making him an online sensation as well as an inspiration for many young people. Not only should London be an inspiration to the gay community, but to all persons. He has used his performance to declare that a person should never be judged on the sole basis of sexual orientation or gender.

Nothing says the American dream better than freedom of speech coupled with a drive to succeed.

Hepburn reaches milestone with 1,000th point Erika White Sports Editor ewhite@lhup.edu Six foot four and strolling down Water Street with his headphones around his neck, Wali Hepburn seems to be well known by everyone he passes.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Hepburn scored his 1,000th point during LHU’s home game against East Stroudsburg, a team ranked 3rd in the country for DII basketball. Hepburn became the 16th man, according to golhu.com, to receive this honor in Lock Haven’s history.

On top of this accomplishment, Lock Haven beat ESU 82-80 with the help of Hepburn who scored 27 points, two of which were the game-winning basket.

“Scoring my 1,000th point felt great,” Hepburn said. “But I’d rather win more than anything.”

Hepburn, who grew up in South Philadelphia, began playing basketball around the age of seven. “It [basketball] helped me escape from my neighborhood and kept me out of trouble,” he said.

After high school, Hepburn attended Shippensburg University, but left after two years. His assistant coach at Shippensburg, Mike Nestor, took the Head Coach position at Lock Haven and encouraged Hepburn to play for him.

Off the court, he’s an average college student who, in his downtime, enjoys playing video games and watching movies.

Majoring in communication with a track in sports broadcasting, Hepburn wants to use his degree as his backup plan. “[After college] I’d like to play professionally overseas,” he said, also adding in the fact that it’s taxfree money.

If that doesn’t pan out, Hepburn showed an interest in coaching or going into broadcast.

Family is an important part of Hepburn’s life, he has his mother’s and grandmother’s names tattooed on his arms.

“My mom’s my hero,” Hepburn said. “I’m a big mama’s boy.”

On Wednesday Feb. 12, Hepburn was presented with his 1,000th game ball before facing off against West Chester. He then gave the ball to his mother Cindy, who attended the game to see her son’s achievement.
