On the morning of Sept.

11, 2001, the world watched as the United States faced one of its biggest tragedies in recent history as the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were hit by planes; the nation was under attack.

One by one, as the planes hit these targeted areas, American’s witnessed the destruction on live TV. As with any disaster, those who have witnessed such events are usually able to recall their whereabouts during the time of the tragedy, as well as remark on how they felt. While many of the students here at Lock Haven University were young kids back in 2001, they were still able to experience the effects of the event, and they can recall what September 11th, 2001, was like for them….

“I just remember being in class, and another teacher coming in our class telling us that the World Trade Center had just been hit,” said Wali Hepburn, a communication major. “At the time I honestly didn’t even know what the World Trade Center was, or how serious the attack was,

I spent a lot of time watching what was going on.”

“At home in China, I just remember watching the many people screaming. The reports [of what happened] were on newspapers for a long time. People in my country were scared.” Shoujie Yi, who is majoring in accounting.

“I was in school when the Twin Towers fell, and after my teachers were informed about the whole incident, they came in and told us to stop what we were doing,” Shirrica Walls, a business major. “My teacher turned on the news and she let us watch it, even though I feel like we shouldn’t have because we were so young and couldn’t really understand what was going on. After that, I went home and my mom told me what happened.”

“We got out of school early, ‘cause it was near my school. And on that day my mom came home, and she was crying. Here we found out my grandmother had died, and we had to travel to New York City that day…

My whole family was upset about the events that had happened, and my grandmother’s death,” Jenni Slo-

“Everybody was nervous, because we didn’t know what was going on, [but] we were all together as a family as the tragic stuff happened.”

“I was in 3rd grade and my mom came and picked me up; she was crying and I didn’t know what was wrong.

We went to my grandparents’ house (my dad’s parents) in Queens, and we were all sad watching TV. My dad was a member my mom kept getting phone calls,” Taylor Lee, a Political Science/ Pre-Law & sports administration major.

“A day or two passed and my dad still wasn’t home.

I went back to school, and I remember being at an afterschool program. [One of the teachers] Ms. Patty pulled me out of the class, and I saw my dad. It makes me cry because I didn’t know if I was going to see him again. But he came to my school in his uniform. He was covered in all white [from the debris]. they let him go was to come get me. I’ll never forget that.”

College students are in one of the most vulnerable age groups for sexual assault. According to multiple studies, students are at an increased risk for from the beginning of the semester to Thanksgiving break is known as the “red zone” — a period of vulnerability.

Most college students who are sexually assaulted are victimized by someone they know. Although stranger rapes occur, acquaintance rape is the most prevalent form of sexual violence among college students.

There is a common misconception that acquaintance rape is not as serious, not as criminal and not as traumatic to the victim as stranger rape. Some people think it isn’t “real rape.”

However, rape is a felony crime, regardless of the offender’s relationship to the victim. Acquaintance rape is just as serious and just as devastating to the victim.

Although the only true way to prevent rape is to stop the rapist, here are some steps to avoid or help to prevent acquaintance rape: 1. Know your sexual intentions and limits and communicate them clearly.

You have the right to say “no” to any unwanted sexual contact. Back up your words with your body language. If you are uncertain about what you want, ask your partner to respect your feelings. Don’t give mixed messages.

2. Your partner cannot read your mind. Be verbal and say what you are feeling. Tell the person how far you want to go, what you want and don’t want to do and when you want to stop.

3. Remember that some people think drinking heavily, wearing certain clothing or agreeing to be alone with them indicates a willingness to have sex.

Be careful to communicate your limits and intentions clearly in such situations.

4. Listen and trust your “gut” feelings. If you start to feel uncomfortable or unsafe, listen to your feelings and act on them. Get yourself out of the situation. Call for help.

5. Ask for help or “make a scene” if you feel threatened. If you are being pressured or forced into sexual activity against your will, let the other person know how you feel and get out of the situation, even if it’s awkward and you embarrass the other person.

6. Be especially careful in situations involving the use of drugs or alcohol.

They can make you less aware of danger signs and less able to communicate clearly. Be especially aware when you are in a new situation or with people you don’t know well.

7. Go to parties or clubs with friends you can trust and agree to “look out” for one another. At parties where there is drinking or drugs, appoint a “designated sober person” who will look out for the others in the group by regularly checking on them. Leave parties with people you know.

8. Listen carefully to the person you are with in sexual situations. If your partner says “no” to sexual contact or their body language tells you they are any further, stop. If you think you are getting a “mixed message,” or you are not sure what your partner wants stop.

9. Don’t assume you know what another person wants. For example, don’t automatically assume that just because a person gets drunk or agrees to be alone with you, they want to have sex. Don’t assume that just because someone has had sex with you before, she or he is willing to have sex with you again.

And don’t assume that when a partner consents to kissing or other sexual touching, he or she is willing to have sexual intercourse.

10. Get verbal consent from your partner. Be aware that if you have sex with someone who is unable to give consent or is unable to resist, you are committing rape or sexual assault. If you have sex with someone who is under the may be guilty of rape or sexual assault.

11. Resist peer pressure to do things you don’t want to do. Don’t participate in violent or criminal acts or get involved in any activity that makes you feel uncomfortable. Don’t go along with people who are abusing another person.

Get involved if you think someone else might be in trouble. If you see someone who could be about to commit rape or become a victim, help them.

With the changing weather, we can also expect to return to our favorite times and worlds for an hour a week.

Once Upon a Time- (ABC Sept. 28 8 p.m.)

Last season took us from Neverland to OZ. Now a very familiar face, Elsa the snow queen, is visiting Storybrooke. Another problem facing our favorite fairytale town is the potential return of the Evil Queen. Emma made the mistake of bringing back Maid Marian, thus ruining Regina’s relationship with Robin Hood. Will Regina continue down her path of redemption or will she revert to her evil ways.

American Horror Story- (FX Oct. 8 11 p.m.)

Last season found us in New Orleans joining the was the next Supreme. This season takes us under the Big Top. Jessica Lange’s character Elsa Mars runs one of the last known freakshows in America.

Parks and Recreation- (NBC Fall 2014 8:30 p.m.) Sadly, this is the last season for our favorite government workers. Last season we saw Ron take the plunge with Diane, Leslie and Ben travel all around the world and having triplets. Next season will see Leslie in her new job after The National Park Conference in San Francisco. Tom’s life after his restaurant debacle, and April and Andy being April and Andy.

Scandal- (ABC Sept. 25 9 p.m.) In the season Rhimes, Fitz’s staff is trying to make sure he doesn’t turn into a one-term President after it was revealed that Olivia was his mistress. On top of that a bomb went off in a funeral home that contained all of Fitz’s political opposition. It doesn’t seem like things could any worse for Fitz and Olivia, but season 4 will tell.

Arrow- (CW Oct. 8 8 p.m.) Season 2 ended with Team Arrow teaming up with the League of Assassins to stop the Mirakuru Minions in the siege of Starling City. Also in their attempt to down Slade Wilson as well. Oliver confronts Slade, only to be knocked out and then mysteriously wakes up in Hong Kong.

Megan Penny Staff Writer mrp4766@lhup.edu If you’ve consumed any type of media, ever, you may have noticed a pattern in representation. If you are white, male, upper class, heterosexual, cisgender, and abled, than plot lines and characters that you can relate to. They’re probably well developed and are shown as a real people, not accessories or punch lines!

However, everyone else is viewed differently: the woman as the love interest, the character with as the accessorized best friend, or the token person of color portrayed either as sassy, poor, or criminal.

‘Orange is the New Black’ is groundbreaking in media representation, touching upon some real issues that are not often brought up in our current media. Race, privi-

lege, sexuality, mental health and gender identity are touched upon.

What is unique is how the characters are portrayed. They are shown as well rounded, and not as single faceted stereotypes as in most “representation” of marginalized groups.

OITNB is mostly a female cast who vary in every sense of the word.

To say more clearly, they represent in multiple ways the stories of real women, and that is unfortunately rare.

Laverne Cox, a trans actress of color, plays Sophia Bursett, a trans woman incarcerated for credit fraud. Her relationship with her son Michael is strained by her transition. Her wife Crystal is supportive of her transition, but struggles with her incarceration.

Sophia is played by a trans* actress, rather than a male actor, which shows the show’s integrity.

Uzo Aduba plays beloved inmate Suzanne better known as “crazy eyes”. Suzanne is actually an inmate from the psych ward. She often breaks down and can become violent despite her normally pleasant and humorous persona. Despite her mothers efforts to have Suzanne included, people leave her out of activities that her sister, who is white, is included.

One scene in particular, has the audience analyzing their own attitudes. Suzanne turns back in conversation, “Can I ask you something? Why does everybody call me crazy eyes?” This scene leaves viewers conscious of their own attitudes related to people with disabilities.

Representation in media is crucial to the way we navigate and perceive our world and our communities. This show will pave the way for other productions to write with attention to reality. So if you haven’t watched it yet, steal your so.

the root of the album is located elsewhere. One song that sticks out is “True Colors.” I think it really speaks about where Wiz has come from and how he hasn’t forgotten his home, or the people who helped him through life.

Sure, when it comes to anything from Wiz, we can expect a few of the songs are meant for partying. But Wiz really nailed them on Blacc Hollywood. Many of the songs on his new album really work at getting a room hyped up.

Nicki Minaj helps make these songs really soar because along with Wiz her style is “the party never stops.”

Honestly, I didn’t really enjoy the beginning of the album so much. It wasn’t terrible, but I thought the later songs offered a look at what Wiz used to be like. It reminded me of his old albums, like “Show and Prove” and “Flight School.” Blacc Hollywood really turns around once you get to “Raw” — the beat was repetitive for the most part, but it Wiz also featured some great artists, from Schoolboy Q to Nicki Minaj. If you are thinking of buying this album the deluxe album is the way to go. It includes two extra songs that feature Rick Ross, Nas, and Snoop Dogg. With that being said, the 2014 VMAs were not the VMAs. They were the BeyMAs. Because that 16-minute performance was the central focus of the entire show. This was a Beyoncé concert whether you agree with it or not and, if you do disagree, keep on deluding yourself. Let’s see how far you go with that, eh?

It was an amazing contrast to her 2011 BeyMAs performance when she now incomparable princess Blue Ivy. To anyone who isn’t in The Bey Hive (Beyoncé’s insane fanbase), Yoncé is another one of King Bey’s alter egos.

5 Bassists that slap back Zach Estright Staff Writer zestrigh@lhup.edu Paul McCartney once said, “None of us wanted to be the bass player. In our minds he was just the fat guy who played at the back.”

The bass player was never appreciated over time needed.

Band members rely on the bass player’s subtle yet powerful presence. They link harmonies together, and also keep the groove going for the rest of the band. Everyone thinks the drummer is the only person to keep time, but the bass player actually keeps the song’s tempo. In most cases, the drummer follows the bassist’s lead.

Pretty rad, right?

Now that the bassist’s role has been covered, let’s touch on some legends who are keen on “Slapping the bass!” #5- Paul McCartney The Beatles The Beatles swept America in the early 1960s during the British Invasion. Paul McCartney, one of the lead singers, takes the role of one of the best bassists of all time. A unique reason he is on this list is that he is only one of the few bass players that plays lefty.

#4- Christopher Wolstenholme Muse Muse is known to put themselves out there with crazy rock anthems, piano ballads and sophisticated bass lines! Some of their greatest hits like “Starlight” is carried by Wolstenholme’s bass line melodies. It’s not everyday you hear a bass stealing the spotlight and Wolstenholme does that successfully! #3- Flea Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea packs the band with jumping bass notes and an incredible slapping style. One of his most notable jazzy bass lines found in the song “All Around the World” really makes this piece of art a true masterpiece. #2- Les Claypool Primus One of the weirdest guys in the band, but an incredibly talented instrumentalist. He goes out of the boundaries instead of playing it safe like most traditional bassists. His fast paced jazzy style is one-of-a-kind. He is truly a gifted musician. #1 Geddy Lee Rush like Geddy Lee has. Lee’s bass lines shock and awe fans. He is number one, primarily because he just knows how to pack a punch with his compelling bass lines to tell his own story in each song. Lee is truly an artist of our time, and can go down as one of the best bassists the world has ever known.

If a student is concerned about protection they should be aware that Glennon does offer free contraceptives. They have various types and they strongly advise students to come to them and ask for them.

Recently, Glennon Health Services has begun setting up clinics to test for STDs. The Department of Health Services and Aids Resource will come in once a month and will offer students free testing.

The staff of Glennon is working to set these Clinics up twice a month but tember 16th the STD testing Clinic will be set up again and students will be able to call for an appointment if they would like to be tested.

In the event a test comes back positive, Susan Moore, RN Supervisor of Glennon, reports that the Department of Health and the Aids Resource will call the student to come in. From there they will direct the student and tell them where to go for treatment.

“The testing process [is] with the department of health and the STD testing, [and] they are testing the student for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. It is a Urine test. For the AIDs testing it’s a screening, they will talk to you and decide if you are at risk for AIDs then they will do a cheek swab and there’s no pain at all. The turnaround time is not even a week,” Moore said.

Glennon strongly advises students to come and get tested when they offer these clinics because they have seen quite a number who end up coming into contact with an STD. Insurance is not needed to be tested and according to Moore there are no longer any other free clinics in Lock Haven for a student to go to.

Should a student miss the date for the free Clinic on Campus, Moore recommends Susquehanna Health in Williamsport. “We recommend that students go to Susquehanna Health, they have free clinics there and we have the number for them. They can go right there and have everything done as well as other

Wednesday, Sept 10, websites across the web were dominated by the spinning symbol of internet death. This puzzling phenomenon is actually a strategic protest and the spinning loading sign a symbol of the “Internet Slowdown.” the hundred websites participated in this protest to attempt to show what “net neutrality” would make the Internet world look like.

What is “net neutrality”?

The Federal Communications Commission is proposing to adopt certain rules that would create “fast lanes” of internet to those that pay Internet service providers like Comcast or Verizon. Meanwhile the rest are left in the “slow lane” watching mesmerizing loading symbols.

Beyond just being generally not cool, this also impedes the growth and creativity of the Internet by preventing smaller users and independent organizations from getting their voices and ideas heard.

Not exactly fun and free Internet, but fortunately you can do something about it.

Tell the FCC what you think! Go to battleforthenet.com to sign a letter to the lawmakers to help keep the Internet free.

Internet is a mainstay of many of our lifestyles so keep yourself informed and think about what sort of Internet world you want to live in.

You simply get a ceramic mug, crack 2 or 3 eggs into it, add salt and pepper and microwave for 45 seconds. with a fork and nuke them again for another 45 seconds. And voila! A fast! These eggs can even be dressed up with veggies for a little extra boost.

Activities include discussions about public relations campaigns and advertisements, trips and establishing public relations for the club.”

ABOUT US: The Public Relations Club is a club of students interested in the study of Public Relations.

The goal of the club is for members to share and expand on their knowl-

The club also focuses on the difference between Public Relations and Marketing.

Adviser Dr. Reece about the club: “Our goal is to make sure our students learn about real life public relations issues and how public relations functions within organizations. Though most of our members are Advertising and Public Relations majors, students with other majors should consider joining because most jobs have a public relations function.”

way we label the victim and the villain in situations where personal information is exploited in one way or another.

During my sophomore year of college, I became a victim of identity theft.

Someone managed to get my credit card numbers and fraduulently used my account. The way my bank saw it, this was a heinous violation of my personal property. They restored my account before ever starting an investigation.

Why? Because I was a victim, of course (that’s why they call it being a victim of identity theft).

Never mind that in owning the card and using it anywhere, I was opening myself up to being hacked in some manner. The greater point was that I had a right to keep my personal information just that— Things could have been a lot worse for me, but not just because my bank was so accommodating.

While we as a society have strict laws and collective beliefs about protecting money and personal property, the person behind an accumulation of wealth is devalued. We care more about things

well-being was compromised. There was money involved. So the bank’s response was to quickly correct the situation. I’m sure they didn’t want me taking my business elsewhere, but non-millions weren’t exactly making or breaking them either.

At the heart of the matter is an instant, black and white system of categorizing the victim and villain here and taking corrective action.

Money theif: villain. Person who poured money into a banking institution: victim.

And not one single person to this day has ever place. No one has ever blamed me for taking that risk and creating another access point to my private life.

But think about some more personal situations.

Think of the rape victims who get blamed for acting or dressing a certain way. Consider victims of domestic abuse who get blamed for allowing something bad to happen to them. And let us not forget everyone who ever had a nude photo go somewhere

it wasn’t meant to go.

These people are all victims. That’s pretty clear to me.

To others, these people are victim and villain. They decide to focus on the risks these people took—wearing a short skirt, trying to work out a bad marriage for the kids, test-driving nude photography because positive body image is really important—rather than what they’ve lost.

A stolen car is the same as someone’s stolen dignity. In fact, the latter is far worse.

And here’s the thing: pretty much anything you do comes with some inherent risk. I’m not saying some behaviors aren’t riskier than others—playing at a Sheetz—but risk factor shouldn’t devalue the crime. And neither should the stolen whatever not You have just as much a right to ugly underwear the world never sees, a guilty pleasure playlist no desires as you do to your money staying safe in the bank. And maybe, just maybe if we quit shaming people for expecting privacy, we can learn to see as much value in people as we see in our things.

Disabling ableism at LHU Vicky Kramer Staff Writer vak1553@lhup.edu A new semester is upon us bringing new classes, new faces and more challenges.

Students in Mrs. Bonnie Williams’ SPEC212 Low Incidence Disabilities class came into contact with a major simulation wheelchair project.

The project required students to spend ten or more hours in a wheelchair, whether on campus, in their dorm or apartment, or maneuvering around town.

Students had to get a feel for what it is really like for people who are physically handicapped and bound to

a wheelchair.

This project especially impacted me because, like many people I took for granted the abilities of mobility and independence on a daily basis. your whole perspective on things totally changes. I went grocery shopping, clothes shopping, maneuvered around my home and around downwheelchair. It was truly an unforgettable experience.

For the most part, strangers were very kind, opening doors and getting things for me that I could not reach and many sent positive, encouraging thoughts when I appeared aggravated (which I was several times throughout the day).

Ashleigh Brass, a sophomore and

student in Mrs. Williams’ class stated that there were many circumstances she didn’t think of before she was temporarily wheelchair bound.

“I could hardly maneuver in my dorm or use the bathroom. I couldn’t reach my dresser drawers or closet,” said Brass. “When I went out to eat I had to wait for a handicapped stall that was occupied by someone who wasn’t handicapped. I am guilty of doing that too, but it totally makes it a lot worse when you are in a wheelchair and do not have the ability to use other empty stalls.”

Physical challenges and roadblocks were many things Brass said she felt as the day went on: “My arms were so sore and the hills on campus were killer. I was so tired that I had to ask other people to

push me. It was embarrassing.”

Talking about the assignment, she continued: tive. You feel like an inconvenience to people when you ask for help. From now on I will do my best to reassure handicapped people that I do not mind helping them.”

So often we take for granted the little things in life, such as the ability to be mobile. Handicapped people want the same as everyone else does, to be seen as and treated as an equal.

So, next time you see a handicapped person, don’t glare or whisper.

Instead, ask if they need help or how they are doing. Sometimes the smallest gestures to a handicapped person can make a world of difference.

Happy times return to Happy Valley Jayson Moyer Assistant Sports Editor jmp362@lhup.edu Annual bowl games and 107,000 strong packed into Beaver Stadium every Saturday under the leadership of Joe Paterno at Penn State. That is, until the Jerry Sandusky Sex Abuse Scandal came about.

The University and the football program were faced with a four-year bowl ban, a loss of scholarships, wins ball coach, and heck, his statue was even removed.

On Monday afternoon, that all changed.

The NCAA announced that they have removed the bowl ban from Penn State, effective immediately, and that Penn State will receive full scholarships beginning in the 201516 season.

Let freedom reign, State College, let freedom reign.

Penn State fans can now yell, “We are,” followed by: Bowl eligible.

Back on track. Competing for a Big Ten championship.

They aren’t as catchy as the usual, “We are,” followed by, “Penn State,” but those three statements just mentioned that followed the initial, “We are,” mean the absolute world to the Penn State community. around campus on Monday night, beginning at Old Main, in celebration of the sanctions being lifted. Chants

of, “Joe Paterno,” cried throughout the crowds, along with the usual, “We are!”

Let it be known, that rally on Monday night was much different than the rallies and riots that took place two-and-a-half years ago when Penn State University still must wins from the Paterno era, plus one more under interim coach Tom Bradley, are still vacated.

However, not enough can be said for what Bill O’Brien did in his two years as head coach at Penn State.

This man came over from the New England Patriots in a time of complete disarray.

What O’Brien did was remarkable. He kept the University, the football program, and the community together in the most excruciating of times.

Penn State started off 0-2 in knew what to think. Yet, he managed to propel his Nittany Lion team ish at 8-4 and 6-2 in the Big Ten. ished 7-5, with a huge road win over still a great feat for a team that arguably was so depleted in some positions due to the loss of scholarships.

2014 began the James Franklin era - the hometown boy from Langhorne and the East Stroudsburg graduate.

Penn State has begun the season

2-0 under Franklin. A team that is even more depleted than 2013, traveled to Ireland to beat the University of Central Florida 26-24 on a laston Saturday at Beaver Stadium. a season with meaningful games, a season with anticipation, and a season with, perhaps, a bowl game.

Three days ago Penn State was a team who had no postseason to play story.

Penn State is bowl-eligible.

Penn State can win the Big Ten this year. Penn State could be a part (long-shot, but still, who knows?).

And Penn State has hope, they have pride, and the community surrounding them has pure excitement.

It was a long two-and-a-half years, but Penn State has overcome thing to play for.

They still may be a year or two

Eaton set to lead Lady Eagles John Poli Staff Writer jpoli@lhup.edu It was a natural decision for Rob Eaton to come back to his alma mater and once again lead a Lock Haven soccer team. This time he will lead the women’s soccer team and look to rebuild a team that what was once a conference powerhouse.

Eaton was a four-year starter for the Bald Eagles and was a member of the 1984, 1986 and 1987 PSAC championship teams. Eaton also served as a team captain and led Lock Haven in goals during the 1986 and 1987 seasons.

Eaton is an experienced coach now joining his seventh program. Eaton served as head coach with Lock Haven, Methodist University, Lycoming, and California (Pa.) men’s programs, along with Lycoming and Clarion women’s programs.

Eaton has a coaching record of 160-149-28. Eaton won the 1997 PSAC Men’s Coach of the Year at Lock Haven and the 2010 PSAC Women’s Coach of the Year award at Clarion.

Eaton will look to restore the girls’ program that he once witnessed win three PSAC titles while he was leading the men’s team to two PSAC runner-ups.

“We have a great program with a great history,” Eaton said. “We are at a sellable university and I have no doubt that we can get it back to where it was before.

As excited as Eaton is for the future of the program, he is completely dialed in on the team that he has in

ishing the last eight games of the season with a 0-7-1 record.

“Right now our goal for this season is to be one item better in every category,” said Eaton. “That means one win more, one loss fewer, one more goal, one less goal allowed. Right now the girls are learning that the training ground is very important and we are keeping things fresh and taking things one step at a time.”

“Each training session has a purpose and when you leave practice you feel accomplished which we never had that before,” senior forward Jamie Hunter said. “Your Eaton is always training us in game like situations.”

“Our practices are more constructive, every practice is performed at a higher rate and he puts us in game like situations. Every drill or skill that we do, we play it as a competition,” senior goalie Michelle Cuomo said.

He breaks everything down into its simplest form and explains everything step by step and builds on it instead of just throwing us into a new formation.”

Eaton is aware of how powerful the PSAC is but he is ready for the challenge.

“It seems like every week we are playing someone ranked in the top 10 teams in the country. But we’re going to improve our standard of play and one day be there competing with them,” Eaton said.

“My goal is make to Lock Haven one of the top women’s programs in the country.”

Play of the week: Senior Jamie Hunter helped to lead LHU’s soccer team to an amazing 2-1 win home-opener for Lock Haven. for the Lady Eagles is a contest at Gannon University at 2 p.m in a PSAC contest.
