Transgender comedian wins over crowd Kate White News Editor kmw4152@lhup.edu Jeffrey Jay won over a large audience Wednesday night.

Erin Kennedy, from the Lock Haven University’s President’s Commission on LGBTQ Affairs, in coordination with the Gay Straight Alliance, Gender Equality and Liberation Services Inc., began with introductions.

The Texas City, Texas native started in comedy 10 years ago, performing in sports bars throughout Texas.

Jay left nothing untouched in his comedy routine, with half was a question and answer session.

The 28-year-old comic began his set with a random joke and covered many different topics. After warming up the crowd, Jay began to tell jokes that involved being transgender.

“I don’t go around telling people I’m transgender unless I’m getting paid,” he said.

The session was open and allowed people to ask their questions without feeling judged. Several students felt that this type of event is a great way to educate students on campus about something many students may not know about or may not know who to ask about.

“I think it’s important because if people in the audience are closeted about gender identity, it’s really nice to see someone who transitioned who is a lot happier than they were,” Tory Smith, a social work major, said. “So it’s nice to have this message being spread in a way that we can all laugh to and feel happy.”

“I think it’s really important to have someone that’s going to be able to bring education to campus but not so much in your face, like, ‘hey this is going to be a lecture

come take notes and be super involved,’” Sara Guthrie, a sociology major, added. “It’s light and it’s an atmosphere that everyone was able to feel light-hearted about and get involved.”

The question and answer session was a great way for Jay to tell serious stories as well as jokes, as well as to discuss questions asked at other events, from serious to funny. This served both as a transition from Jay’s jokes as well as a way to educate audience members in a funny way.

“I think it’s really important to use this as an outlet, in a way, to bring this kind of information to campus because it’s a really good way to convey to students in a way that doesn’t sound dry or forced,” Jaquelyn Eckley, a social work major, said. “It’s something they can understand and enjoy and take something away from.”

LHU to offer scholarships to annual Women’s Leadership Institute Sarah Eckrich Opinion Editor seckrich@lhup.edu and President’s Commission on the Status of Women are offering three scholarships this year to the annual PASSHE Undergraduate Women’s Leadership Institute.

The consortium is an annual event conducted during summer that strives to empower women to be leaders through education and teamwork. It culminates an opportunity for participants to apply for grant money for leadership programs at their home universities.

During this academic year, students from Bloomsburg University, who attended the institute last summer, proposed a plan to host an on-campus event to raise awareness about dating violence prevention. They submitted their plan and received grant money to conduct a three-day event, ending in a question and answer panel. Many students at BU participated.

All students who attend the leadership in-

stitute have the chance to work with their fellow student ambassadors or alone to conceptualize, propose and host similar programs.

The leadership institute serves to guide participants as they learn about gender equality issues and ways to communicate with and lead their peers in social change. In the past, this has involved screening movies, assigning readings, holding group discussions and having guest speakers come to the institute.

Last year, students also had a chance to give back to the McKeever Environmental Center, which hosts the annual conference. Participants completed a service project that involved widening and re-mulching hiking trails for a memorial celebration honoring one of the center’s donors. McKeever Environmental Center is located in Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles from the Ohio border, and serves students and groups from throughout the commonwealth and beyond.

This year, the leadership institute runs from June 6-10. Students are expected to provide their own transportation, though in years past, participants have worked together to carpool.

Any returning student is eligible to apply for one of the three scholarships offered through the school for the institute. The deadline for applications is April 15. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate strong academic achievement, leadership skills and an interest in women’s issues.

The application consists of some basic information and a series of questions based upon which students will be selected to receive a scholarship and attend the conference.

Tension in the town begins to build when Ren forms a relationship with the preacher’s daughter Ariel. The two cause even more tension within the small town by asking their high school to hold a traditional prom.

The director of the show, David Leidholdt, said that the audience can expect a fun and nostalgic atmosphere. said.

Although Footloose is lighthearted and fun, Leidholdt said the show has a bigger message than just rebellious teenagers.

We read in pictures not words Lona Middleton Staff Writer lkemp@lhup.edu Written language is relatively young in the wide span of language itself. There are a number of scientists out there researching how reading and writing work in our brains. The reason that they wonder about this is it stands to reason that there is no way our brains could have evolved a separate mechanism for understanding what we read and recognize in writing. The language change has been very quick and far too fast for evolutionary means. This leads us to a few years ago when some scientists discovered that when we read or see words that are easily recognizable, a part of our brain becomes active, a visual center to be precise.

According to a study that has been published

in Journal of Neuroscience, this evidence led the researchers and scientist to hypothesize that instead of reading a string of letters to form a word, we see and recognize the word and form a picture for it in our mind as we read. Our brains are forming what can be called a picture dictionary and, as we see the word, it is recognized in its entirety as a picture representation of what the word is. We could see the word “dog� and not actually read it. Our brain instantly recognizes that grouping of letters as a word and gives us the picture of a dog instead of the word.

Let us assume we are seeing words we don’t recognize. The brain reads the letters and tries to associate the grouped letters as a picture but nothing comes. Then if a person is taught what the unknown word means the brain will, from that point on, associate a picture with the word rather than the sound of the separate letters alone.

This is actually a huge leap forward in not only understanding how the brain works but it could

disorders. It may turn out to be a viable approach to teach people to recognize entire words as pictures rather than phonetically sounding out the word to gather its meaning.

Now that spring is just around the corner, it is the time for some spring-cleaning. This will spruce up your apartment and make it all ready for summer. Here are a few things that you can do to spring clean.

Organization:

Some things can get misplaced in the hustle and bustle of the busy semester. Going through and organizing things things that you may want to buy. Donating things is better for other people who are less fortunate. Having less clutter can make life a lot easier.

Airing it out:

Having things all shut up makes the house feel damp and stuffy. Open those windows and let the spring air and sunshine in. This is a great way to get ready for the nice weather. Along

Salt and slush from the winter snow has probably left a lasting mark on your carpets. Renting a shampooer is easy and pretty inexpensive. You can rent it for the day and do it. It will not only make your carpets look clean but it will make your place smell fresh too.

Clean out your refrigerator:

The fridge is a place which can get neglected and old food may be hiding in the back. This is a great time to clean this stuff out. You can also check all the condiments’ expiration dates on the door of the fridge.

These are just a few things that you can do to springclean. Making sure to do these things will help refresh your house.

English majors: Sassy or snobby?

I’ve heard it said on more than one occasion (many more than one…) that English majors are pretentious.

In the past, I’ve attributed this to a lot of things. There’s the tendency on the part of many of us to be the stereotypical “grammar Nazis,” serving a biological imperative to teach the world how to use “good” and “well” properly. There are all the big, pretty words we like to use. There are the many connections we make between things, which appear to be the handiwork of overanalyzers with superiority complexes, but that are actually just the byproduct of minds that work in analogies by nature.

Then I caught myself being critical and pretentious and I had to rethink the stigmatization of my beloved major.

It happened like this: there’s a product being sold right now that is essentially a short stick upon which one mounts their photo-taking device of choice and which is then subsequently used to ease

regular conversation. idiocy. I proposed in a way that the rhetorical choices of a person directly correlate with their level of intelligence, which probably isn’t entirely fair. And comes with it.

But there’s more to it than that.

Think about it this way for a second: I and many other English majors are dedicating ourselves and our lives to words. We’re spending our time (not to mention our money) devoting ourselves to the pursuit of all things written—some combination of interpreting and producing them. We are drawn to the nuances of the language, the beauty in poetry, the relevance of symbolism and our ability to understand emotions and events that we weren’t a part of through words.

Given that, I’m not sure that it’s fair to call any one of us pretentious for sticking like glue to that

thing which we love: language.

You don’t call a mechanic pretentious because they know what they want out of a vehicle and have informed opinions on others. Maybe it’s because machines seem less subjective, so the associated opinions appear to be more based in fact. But they aren’t. A mechanic is presented with information and makes decisions. English majors are presented with information and make decisions.

It’s really because people are willing to acknowledge that they drive cars that they know nothing about, but they’re not willing to acknowledge that there could also be more to the language that they use every day. And maybe that’s because someone own linguistic integrity.

That’s not meant as a criticism; I don’t expect everyone to get off on reading and writing. I’m just suggesting that if you aren’t a logomaniac, maybe you can see where many of us English majors are and understand that our closeness with words isn’t so much unmitigated pretentiousness as it is an expression of an innate, burning passion within us for language, something that the mass populace bastardizes on a daily basis.

The “write” way to spend time Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu As I sit in the basement of the Stevenson Library, I start to think about the books that seem to go untouched by students and professors on a daily basis. These lonely, untouched books were written with unspeakable words. They could only be written down to get the full grasp of a topic – to get all the information written down and with a sealed hardcover. The authors of these books are proud of their accomplishments, but do you ever wonder if these authors realize that their books sometimes go untouched for years and if they are touched, it is to throw them aside from something new?

In today’s society, we fail to see the use of books. We have Google!

Why do we need books? Google tells

us everything we need to know right?

I say wrong.

Books are the only true form of magic.

By now, we could probably ask Google to tell us a story and a million stories would pop up for us to choose from, but none of these are like holding an actual book in your hands.

Nothing beats the feeling of reading a book and becoming so engrossed with it that you don’t put it down for hours. Nothing compares to the feeling you get when the story gets so intense that you need to grip the cover of the book to maintain composure.

Books are one of the only things left that spark the imagination of people, especially now that technology is all we seem to care about. Reading

allows the brain to open up and picture the scenes as they are read. You imagine what the places and people in the stories look like and how they act. Characters become real people in your minds, and we end up loving them like real people.

Writing is the most powerful thing on Earth. You may not be able to express how you are feeling or what you are thinking, but turn on a song and the lyrics speak exactly what you are feeling.

Read a quote and it expresses the emotions you want to tell someone about. Reading opens the imagination but writing is what starts it all. When you lack the words to speak, it is usually easier to write them down.

I wish I could send our generation back to our parents’ younger years.

It’s sad how much we depend on technology nowadays.

There is more to life than reading your friends’ latest Facebook post.

Reading and writing for fun, as lame as that may sound, is actually a great way to spend your time. Reading and writing bring your imagination to life and also help you to put your thoughts into words.

So next time you don’t know what to do, pick up a book or pen and paper.

I promise you won’t be disappointed.

They are a team that has Aaron Harang as their No. 2 starter, a team with Freddy Galvis, who has shown nothing in the MLB, as their starting shortstop, and they are a team with a Rule Five

The nighttime darkness of the Philadelphia sky hung over Citizens Bank Park in a cold, dreary and miserable winter.

They are also a franchise with around 100 scouting and player development employees who haven’t been able to produce one decent prospect in their farm system in years.

over the winter months might exceed the average attendance the Phillies get through their 81 home games this season.

A division championship run from 2007-2011 that included a World Series championship in 2008, and another World Series appearance in ’09, had this city rocking and rolling with joy. We had been waiting for what seemed like forever for the Phillies to be a quality team every year.

And now, after three straight years of missing the playoffs, and a rebuilding process that the Phillies began this offseason, four years too late, this franchise has hit rock bottom.

It seems as though that is the theme for the Philadelphia sports’ landscape. The Flyers are a completely messed up franchise with no sense of direction. The Phillies are going to miss the playoffs for a fourth straight year.

The only two teams with promise are the Sixers and the Eagles, one of which isn’t even trying to win.

The Phillies are a team that could lose 100 games this season. Easy.

The Phillies have nothing.

Their best prospect – shortstop J.P. Crawford – most likely won’t be Major League ready until 2016. Then they have Aaron Nola, a right-hander the season most likely in Double-A Reading.

The problem with this whole ordeal is that this is what the Phillies are trying to sell to their fan base.

From 2007 to even mid-2012, Citizens Bank Park was sold out every night. I won’t be surprised if their average attendance drops below 25,000 this season.

They have managed to put a product out on the the fans, to buy into.

This is not basketball where rebuilding can take maybe three years. This is baseball where top prospects, who can make it and succeed in the MLB, are few and far between. This is a Phillies

organization that could be at rock bottom for four or more years.

But wait: the Phillies have introduced new amenities to Citizens Bank Park, including a ninepatty cheeseburger and wine and hard liquor.

Maybe that will bring some more people out.

It can’t hurt, because people are going to need hard liquor to watch this team this year.

An old and washed up Ryan Howard, who hit .171 in the spring, won’t bring people out to see them play. Neither will a team with Harang, David Buchanan, Jerome Williams, and who knows who else as their No. 2 to No. 5 starters.

Bottom line is that this situation is entirely the organization’s own fault. They neglected to turn the table after a divisional-round exit in 2011, get rid of the old core group of players, get younger, and transform.

They refused to clean house, including front ofa team like the Red Sox, who will win a World Series one year, transform the next year and be bad, and then be able to contend in the third of those three years.

This season is miserable already and it just began.

Baseball season is here. Citizens Bank Park will be brightened with lights at night, but the darkness that engulfed Citizens Bank Park over the cold and miserable winter will be the darkness that swarms the Phillies’ organization this season.

In schools across the U.S, a debate has begun over yoga pants being a suitable or unsuitable form of clothing for females. From students being sent home due to their clothing going against the dress code, to students being expelled, it’s obviously become a problem that needs to be dealt with. Here at LHU, yoga pants have become normal attire for most girls on campus (myself included) and I’ve heard the issue brought up in several classes – people sparking pros and cons for either side.

As a female, sometimes wearing jeans everyday can get not only tiring, but extremely uncomfortable. Ladies, you know what I am talking about – the dreaded “tummy lines” from wearing jeans all day. The moment the jeans hit

Why are women chastised for wearing yoga pants, but if a man wears sweatpants, not a word is said? The double standard between women and men is still alive and well and this proves my point.

Nevertheless, there is a time and a place for everything and sometimes it is more appropriate to wear a nice pair of jeans instead of yoga pants.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are individuals who are totally

me or what other people think in general – I wear them because they’re comfy and I’m in no mood to wear jeans (which is most of the time).

When the time and place dictate, I know to put the yoga pants down and dress a little bit more like a professional. That’s going to be all the time postgraduation. Until then, just let a girl be comfy wearing her yoga pants to class and shut up about it.

Baseball splits series with East Stroudsburg The Lock Haven University baseball team split their four game series with East Stroudsburg on Sunday and Monday.

At Foundation Field, East Stroudsburg took game one from Lock Haven, 2-1 on Sunday.

The Lock Haven lead didn’t last long, as Jay Young singled home Matt Walewski to tie the game at one in the seventh. A groundout gave East Stroudsburg a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh.

Tyler Eckman pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh for East Stroudsburg, picking up his ninth save of the season.

Jacob Belinda picked up the loss for Lock Haven, throwing 6.1 innings and giving up four hits and two runs. Nick Hornbaker and Aaron Lidgett each threw 0.1 innings of relief in the seventh.

Lock Haven fought back in game two, pouring on an offensive onslaught and beating East Stroudsburg 15-2.
