Zumbathon: Dance for a Cause

Dance, sweat and listen to some great cause.

Alpha Phi Sigma and Alpha Kappa Psi will again be hosting the Zumbathon on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in order to raise money for the Woman’s Center of Lock Haven and their local chapters.

Dr. Cori Myers, department chair of the business and computer science department and Zumba instructor, said last year’s event brought out 50 to 60 people and raised around $300.

“There is not goal,” Dr. Myers said in regards to this year’s attendance, “just to increase in both attendance because it’s a student event it’s just nice to have the participation out there doing something but also in the contributions and the fundraising aspect.”

Zumba instructor and LHU student, Ryan Shields also state his support that he has for the Zumathon.

Shields stated that this is his second year of participating as an instructor for the event and said, “I would do anything for something good.”

Dr. Myers is not the only faculty member that will be involved in the event. Dr. Katherine Ely, assistant professor of the criminal justice department, will participate as one of the instructors for the evening as well.

Not only will participants receive the chance to win prizes from various businesses from Lock Haven, they will also receive the chance to see some of their professors perform choreographed dances.

Myers said that faculty from the business, history, communications and criminal justice departments will be performing a special group number to two songs.

This event costs $3.00 per student and $5.00 for members of the community. All participants must be 18 to participate.

The History of Black History Month

“The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent.

Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.

The NAACP was founded on February 12, 1909, the centennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham

In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week.

A Diverse Education: Black students at LHU Kyra Smith-Cullen Editor-In-Chief ksmithcu@lhup.edu In today’s society, diversity is a hot topic. This generation of college students is more aware of the need for variety than many others. But is LHU exposing its students to enough racial diversity?

Each year, the school releases the updated version of the Institutional Research, which keeps tracks of the enrollment and hiring statistics.

Since 2010, there has been a rise in the black stucampus. In the fall of 2014, there were 401 black students enrolled, which is 48 more than there were in the fall of 2010. When compared with the overall student population this year, which is 4,917, they make up 8.16 percent.

While the reason behind this increase is unclear, some have been crediting it to LHU’s ‘Jump-

start’ program. The program takes recent high school graduates who either had a low GPA or SAT score and enrolls them in summer classes so that they can experience college and make sure it is the right path for them. The goal is to have the attendees leave the program with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA. Many who had heard of the program had heard that it recruited only from Philadelphia.

“It wasn’t that we only recruited from Philly, it’s just that those students are the most vocal about the program,” said Kenny Hall, the Director of the Center for Excellence and Inclusion. “Those students only made up about 40 percent of the group and the rest were from more local districts.”

But for some students, the rise isn’t enough.

“There isn’t enough diversity for anything except white people,” said Qwuanya Myers, a black senior who is majoring in communication. “Plus, any activities we have are student organized. The administration doesn’t do anything for us.”

All eyes were not on Katy Perry Tyler Potoski Guest Writer tpotosk@lhup.edu The left shark captured the eyes of millions of people on the night of the Super Bowl. Hailed as the “Real MVP of the Super Bowl,” the left shark in the halftime performance quickly became an internet sensation.

However, the left shark was not the main celebrity performing the show. Lead by artist, Katy Perry, the halftime show was one of the most watched in the history of the Super Bowl (mainly because of Left Shark). Katy Perry used many different effects a seizure-inducing realisKaty entered the show riding what looked like a giant metallic lion.

My initial reaction to the show was kind of confused but at the same time, I was entranced by the many different effects that were used throughout the show. Katy Perry, who happens to be a majestic woman with

the show, and I was quite impressed to see how fast she changed into each one.

Some people might think her Cheeto’s uniform was over the top, but I think it just added to her ‘hotness’ factor. Accompanying Katy Perry was none other than world famous Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz, who both also added to the pizzazz of the show.

I was extremely satisrole in the show. She didn’t take over the halftime show from Katy, but at the same time showed the world that she still has a ton of spunk.

Many people might think Katy Perry’s beach scene was stolen from 22 Jump Street’s famous hallucination scene, but I personally think that Katy did it better, all thanks to Left Shark. If Channing Tatum had ridiculous looking sharks dancing next to him with smiling beach balls, maybe 22 Jump Street could have been ter than Katy Perry does. All and all, the halftime show was very exciting and kept many people who watched the show in awe.

Commercials of a new caliber Lisa Conner A&E Editor lconner@lhup.edu Every year millions of Americans gather around their TVs to watch one of the most lookedforward to events of the year: the Super Bowl and its commercials.

This is the one time a year where people take bathroom breaks and go to the refrigerator during the actual game.

Averaging $4 million for a 30-second commercial slot, viewers anticipate only the best and most entertaining commercials.

However, the commercials of the 50th annual Super Bowl maintained a serious tone that hasn’t been demonstrated in previous years.

One of the most astonishing commercials of the night was Nation Wide’s “preventable accidents” commercial, featuring an average boy stating lifetime events that he will

never experience — such as getting cooties, traveling the world on a sailboat or getting married.

At the end, the commercial takes a dramatic and unexpected turn when the boy says the reason he’ll never achieve anything in life is because he died in an accident.

Other commercials were not as somber, but featured more inspirational themes, such as Toyota and Microsoft, whose ads featured a woman and a little boy with prosthetic legs being very active. The woman in the Toyota commercial, athlete Amy Purdy, snowboarded and danced.

Microsoft’s ad featuerd a little boy playing baseball and competing in running events.

Among the few more comedic commercials was the Snickers commercial, “You aren’t you when you’re hungry.”

This commercial was star studded, featuring Carol, Mike from the Brady Bunch, Danny Trejo and Steve Buscemi. Trejo portrayed the hungry Marsha and Buscemi played the hungry Jan.

Fiat played on sex appeal in a funny, unique way using an erectile dysfunction medication to enhance the new Fiat 500X. The commercials this year may have appeared disappointing to many, but perhaps we are entering a new stage of entertainment that is of a different caliber, focusing less on sex appeal and talking babies and more on positive campaigns and serious issues.

The biggest fundraiser of the year, Relay for Life, will be held on March 20-21 from 6pm6am. All funds raised throughout the year go to the American Cancer Society.

“With my fourth LHU Relay being right around the corner, it is very heartwarming to me to see students, faculty, staff and friends year. Students want to graduate college with an education, experiences, memories and positive things to say about where they’ve spent the last four years. This club has helped me get where I want to be as that student,” said Clarissa Tarnowski, a senior.

The goal for the CAC is to raise more funds than they raised the year before. Club members help out by sitting at tables selling tee shirts, making Weekly meetings are a chance to plan campus events to work toward the big-

Meetings include discussing who will work tables, planning events, fundraising and decoration ideas, just to name a few.

“CAC is important to me because we get to be a part of a great cause and help people raise awareness of all different types of cancer. We also have a lot of fun together as a club,” said sophomore Colleen Eccles Many students who have joined CAC have been personally affected by the loss of family or friends to Cancer, but anyone who has the time and desire to help is welcome to join. The club consists of 3040 regular members and 400+ students fundraise all year and attend the Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is held all over the United State.

It is typically a 12 or 24 hour event where people come together to stay up all night to repeach day. Here at Lock Haven, CAC plans a full schedule of events to keep everyone awake, including ceremonies, live performances, games and Zumba.

“CAC is important to me because I have had my own personal experiences with family members and friends that have had cancer. It’s awesome to be in a club that puts forth so much effort to raise awareness awful disease. Feb. 2 is just another day to some, but to others it determines what the next six weeks will entail. This year Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means six more weeks of winter! And I have already heard and seen people complain on social media.

Now, I’m a pretty realistic person and I don’t know about you but I totally saw this coming! The weathermen, who are usually wrong, were actually pretty accurate about the latest winter storms; even last year the winter weather get annoyed with the winter weather, because when winter comes it is pretty much expected that snow is not far behind.

I can understand the excitement of wanting spring to come sooner because, personally, spring is my favorite season. When you start complaining and getting mad with the results of a groundhog’s shadow, that’s where I draw the line! No matter what Punxsutawney Phil says, winter will always last a certain number of days, at least when think-

ing astronomically. It is understood that by the ‘end’ of winter sometimes it is already warmer and there is a lack of snow, but that doesn’t change the fact that the season hasn’t changed yet on the calendar. Winter will always be the season for snow whether it comes or not; a groundhog won’t change the weather.

Although I must say it is a really cute tradition that keeps people entertained and on their toes, I just don’t think it should be taken that seriously.

Since six more weeks is what has been predicted, however, let’s focus on some positive things that can be taken from this. There is the fashion statement of layering, big sweaters, the comfort of sweatpants and hoodies, and all the different boots. There is also the hot chocolate, snow days, and staying in to cuddle up and watch a movie or read a good book.

There are a lot of positives that can come out of winter (especially since winter is the season you can be lazy and it is perfectly reasonable) and we shouldn’t complain about things we don’t have control over. Picture this: you’re out having dinner with friends. The restaurant is full—not so packed that you have to shout just to hear two feet across the table; enough to feel cozy, with a low, warm buzz of conversation. The air is is the quintessential gay ol’ time.

Then that all starts to change. The warm hum of conversation grows into a menacing cacophony. You start to look around, wondering if anyone else notices (but they don’t). And as you’re looking around, you start to realize just how many people there are (a lot). And how many smells. And how many lights, how many employees, how many people are clinking their glasses, and wiping their mouths, and coughing…

Your chest tightens and your stomach starts to roll. You get that gagging feeling in your throat, like you’re going to hurl. Your shirt collar feels too tight. You get a stabbing pain right in the middle of your back. You panic.

You feel like you can’t breathe.

Standing up to the stigma Timothy Havener Guest Writer timothyhavener@gmail.com There are times both in our personal lives and as a society that we must make each other uncomfortable for the sake of purging the unjust treatment of others by our fellow citizens. What I am about to say will anger some people, but its true intent is to provide support for others who are suffering in silence like I did for so long.

The recent suicide of Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teen from Ohio, made put off out of fear of rejection and judgment. You see, we are both bisexual and we have been closeted about it for a long time.

I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian household with a strongly anti-gay preacher/father. When I started to realize I was a little different, I noticed how my parents and other Christians around me treated and talked about anyone with an alternative lifestyle. I bottled it up and hid it away out of fear and shame.

Burying part of who I was came at a price, though. I was recently diagnosed with clinical depression and I am working to undo the abuse I suffered in a strict Christian household. I have come to a point where I can no longer stay silent about who I am, and so has my wife. We are tired of seeing stories of LBGT youth committing suicide because they just can’t take the bullying anymore. Enough is enough. The stigma needs to end.

What I am about to share will be upsetting for many of you. For others, I hope it provides support so that you know that you are not alone in this battle. I am fortunate to have so many good friends and a wife who has been strong with me and helped me overcome my fear. (I love you, Tina.)

Below is the letter I wrote to my mother, coming out of the closet. As tough as it is and as uncomfortable as it may make some of you, please, read it and think about how your actions and beliefs are harming others.

gender people. No one should be shamed so badly for who they are that suicide becomes palatable.

Dear Mom, I’m bisexual. I have been for a while. All those times we talked and you and dad condemned gay people, you were hurting me and never knew it.

I knew when I was just a kid. I experimented with a boy across the street it deep inside, and it is why I began acting out in my teen years. All those sermons bashing gay people, all that guilt you and dad heaved on me left me emotionally scarred. Your fervent prayers would have been better if they had been replaced with genuine love and acceptance. All the frustration of hiding who I was gave me clinical depression, and I put a gun in my mouth and pulled the trigger. It jammed and Tina caught me in time before I could reload.

I know this will hurt you, but it needs to. What you and Dad did to me, beating me instead of taking me to get help with my ADHD, indoctrinating me to hate who I was, and calling this all love was actually abuse. You need to know what you did, and that it was never OK. I don’t hate you or Dad. In fact, writing this breaks my heart, but you and your religious beliefs are toxic and I won’t put myself or my children in that environment any longer.

I hope you learn someday that saying you love someone and actually accepting someone for who they are, without an asterisk, is what real love is. In that you failed, but I won’t with my girls.

One day I hope you come to your senses and forgive yourselves because you already have it from me. I truly look forward to the day you can accept me as I am, and, no, that doesn’t mean you get to tell me that I’m in sin, but you still love me and hate the sin. You either accept me as I am, bisexuality and all, or you’ll remain out of my life and [out of my] children’s lives. Love doesn’t try to change who someone is. It accepts them for who they are no matter what, even if some old book says otherwise.

Nothing but net: Moyer scores 1,000th point

Senior Lady Eagle, Marrysa Moyer, became one of 13 women in the history of Lock Haven University’s women’s basketball program to record more than 1,000 career points.

Of the accomplishment, Moyer said, “It’s an honor to be listed with those women. I know how hard it is to reach 1,000 points and to have accomplished this is an unbelievable feeling. I’ll never forget that moment.”

Moyer, from Altoona, Pennsylvania, began to play basketball while she was in the 3rd grade with help from her father, but it was her mother that had the biggest inhigh school and college, so her and I would always go shooting and she would help me work on things that I lacked in. She’s also the reason I wear no. 24, because it was her number when she played,” Moyer said.

Once Moyer completed her high school career, she committed to play basketball there (2011-2012 season), she scored 170 points for the Mountaineers. The 170 points ended up being the only points she would score while wearing the red and

black uniform. Moyer discovered that she would need shoulder surgery and from that moment on, she decided that it was

intentions on playing after that because I knew how hard recovering from the surgery would be and I thought that, when looking for schools, nobody would be interested in a recovering player,” Moyer said.

Lock Haven head coach, Jennifer Smith, however, had a different plan in mind for Marrysa. “The biggest thing that made me decide to come to Lock Haven was that Coach Smith really believed in me and she saw things that I didn’t even see in myself,” said Moyer. my parents and her telling me that she knows that I’ll do big things at LHU and she has pushed me since the day I put on a Lock Haven jersey to be the best that I can be.”

Baseball looking to new voice for success Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Last season might not have gone the exact way the Lock Haven University baseball team wanted it to go. A 13-28 record was the team’s worst out of the last four seasons, however, a fresh perspective for this upcoming season might change things around.

After 24 seasons with Lock Haven, Paul “Smokey” Stover had resigned, and Jim Chester was in as the Bald Eagles’ new head coach.

“I am ecstatic and humbled to be the new leader of the Lock Haven University baseball program,” said Chester, in an interview on Aug. 4, 2014. “The academic reputation, historic athletic-excellence and the vision of the administration provides all the necessary resources for immediate success on Chester comes to Lock Haven after seven seasons with Penn State University Greater Allegany

Chester led Penn State Greater Allegany to four league championships, three league tournament titles and was named Conference Coach of the Year three times.

Along with Botts, the Eagles also return senior, Ryan Henritzy. Henritzy was right behind Botts last season, hitting .321 with two homeruns and 21 RBI’s.

ern Division Second Team along with Botts.

Redshirt-senior, Joe Nestor returns this season for the Bald Eagles, after leading last year’s squad with 10 games started and second in appearances with 13. The righty compiled a 4-6 record with a 3.96 ERA. In 63.2 innings pitched, Nestor had 34 strikeouts while only walking 20. Nestor also threw in six complete games last season.

Also returning on the pitching staff is junior, Aaron Lidgett. Lidgett led the team in appearances last season with 14 – 12 relief and two starts.

Sophomore, Cody Godfrey also returns for the Bald Eagles. In 13 appearances, Godfrey compiled a 1-0 record with a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 inning pitched.

“I am extremely grateful to LHU President Michael Fiorentino, Vice President Rodney Jenkins, and Director of Athletics Mark Sherburne for giving me this opportunity,” said Chester.

“I am excited to build a program the university and community will take pride in.”
