In light of upcoming LGBT History month, history professor Sandra Barney spoke Monday about the evolution of gay rights in America. The timeline started with an incident at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 and went to the defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act this past June.

Back in 1969, local ordinances in New York did not allow homosexuals to be openly gay. Police raids on bars were frequent because of reports such as same-sex people were dancing too closely together. When police stormed Stonewall, homosexuals fought back.

The police pushed them back the first night, but many gays and allies came back the next day with numbers in the thousands. According to civilrights.org, this was the catalyst of the gay rights movement.

Barney discussed how gay rights focuses have shifted over the years.

At the start of the 1980s, a handful of young men in New York and

in California reported having a rare cancer and/or pneumonia. The cancer, Kaposi’s Sarcoma, is normally only found in elder Jewish men and young Africans while the pneumonia, Pneumocystis Pneumonia Carinii (PCP), was normally found in people with compromised immune systems.

However, these men were young and were previously very healthy. Besides that they were men, the only thing they had in common was that they were all homosexual, according to avert.org.

The web site continues on to say that, just over a month after the CDC’s first official documentation in 1981, the New York Times reported around 41 homosexuals were diagnosed with the illness.

There were also many cases of violence against homosexuals. Barney discussed a young adult named Matthew Shepard, who was beaten and left tied to a fence to die in 1998. Shepard’s death drew attention to hate crime legislation at the state and local level.

“Could you keep your job?

Could you get married? Could you not get beaten up and killed?” Barney said.

“That’s what most of us were thinking about.”

Homosexuals also face adversity at the federal level. In 1996, the U.S. government put DOMA into place, basically stating its “moral disapproval of homosexuality.” Barney explained that they believed marriage was a legal reason to have sex and, eventually, children – which gays cannot do.

Because of DOMA, legal gay marriage was not recognized as official at the federal level and gay couples would therefore not receive the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples. These benefits include Social Security, health insurance and Medicaid.

This past June, the court case U.S. vs Windsor put an end to DOMA. After Edie Windsor’s partner Thea Spyer passed away, Wndsor sued for estate taxes. Though she won her case and was awarded the money at the state level, her case went to the US Supreme Court where DOMA was ruled unconstitutional.

“Edie is the Rosa Parks of this whole affair,” Barney said.

At a press conference following the final court ruling, Windsor stated that the end of DOMA would hopefully be “the beginning of the end of stigma.”

Class creates clothing drive for local school kids As the weather grows colder and the holidays are fast approaching, many families are wondering how they are going to be able to afford the special wishes for their children, or buy warmer clothes for the winter.

Students enrolled in the Small Group Communication class are trying to gather clothes for those in need as their community service component for the course.

When students Adrian Carney, Edward Celkos, Garrett Christlieb, Emilie Hettinger, Marissa Knabe, and Andy Pierre were asked to provide a service to the community, the group wanted to organize a clothing drive to benefit students from Dickey Elementary.

The group put together an informative flyer on how to donate clothes and set up boxes in several locations where community members can donate new or lightly worn clothing items.

Dickey Elementary students wear a wide range of sizes, but anything from 5T to a size 14/16 child or even adult small/medium could help the students at this school.

On campus, donation boxes are located in Bentley

Dining Hall, Robinson, Raub, East Campus, the Parson’s Union Building (PUB), and all sports complexes. Off campus, clothing donations can be made at Evergreen Commons, Arby’s, Dunkin Donuts and Avenue 209.

If you would like to support this program or the school’s Holiday Help program with a monetary donation, you may send a donation directly to Dickey Elementary at 102 S. Fairview Street, Lock Haven, PA 17745.

Student Government encourages students to share suggestions Kyra Smith-Cullen News Editor ksmithcu@lhup.edu A faction of the Student Government has formed, and its goal is to improve the quality of campus life for current and prospective students. The committee is looking for student suggestions to help.

Open-forum meetings are being held every Thursday in PUB room 2 at 4 p.m, which allow student attendees to keep informed about what is being done by the Student Government. It also includes a time where students can voice their concerns or suggestions.

“We realize that students can’t always make it to the meetings, so they can also email us their ideas or problems to our new email address, lhusgbcampuslife@gmail.com,” said Steven Marks, a senior majoring in psychology and the Chair of the Campus Life Committee.

A sub-committee has already been formed to communicate with Aramark, the company that staffs and stocks all food on campus, so that an open network is established and things can be done to improve the dining experience.

“Obviously, we can’t solve every problem brought up. For example, we aren’t going to tell Aramark to get new plates just because students don’t like the color,” said Marks. “But if the issue is serious or is brought up enough, we will look into it. We can’t go into things blindly.”

In addition to the food on campus, the committee is taking steps to make LHU safer in whatever way they can. Currently, they are planning on installing more lights behind facilities like the Student Rec Center.

“We can only take some steps to keep the students safe, but they also have to be aware of their surroundings to help prevent crime,” said Marks. “We’re doing what we can.”

Safety is a concern, especially after the two attacks that prompted timely warnings around campus to alert students of the crimes.

Another preventative measure that the committee is trying to implement is sessions with Public Safety on the topic. It is recommended that students take advantage of the opportunities to do so, like the self-defense workshop that is being offered to women on Nov. 11, 12 and 19 at 6 p.m in East Campus room G112 and the gym respectively.

The committee has already begun its work on campus which included implementing the daily trolley ride to the shopping center, whose details were organized during the summer vacation.

The Student Government was re-established last year and has been attempting to alert students of its presence and what role they have in their decisions.

“The only way we can address problems is if we hear from the students that there is one,” said Marks.

Rumor prompts panic Kyra Smith-Cullen News Editor ksmithcu@lhup.edu Local school districts, including LHU, were in an uproar over a leaked report that there was going to be a shooter on an unnamed campus on Monday, Oct 28.

Rumors began circulating on Sunday, Oct. 27, fueled by social media and word of mouth. As a result, parents of students at the local schools kept their children home or picked them up later.

LHU President Michael Fiorentino Jr. reassured all college students and personnel, via email, that the rumors were false.

“The Department of Public Safety is working with local and state police agencies and determined that there is no threat to any student, staff or faculty,” said President Fiorentino.

According to the Lock Haven Express, the rumors began after an alert was issued to the Keystone Central School District following the arrest of a LHU student who was supposedly driving under the influence.

Perceived threats were issued against Keystone Central, who responded by alerting front desk staff in a precautionary action. From there, the alert was leaked and rumors spread.

It is believed that the panic was aided by the recent school shootings that occurred in Sparks, Nev. according to The Express.

New students receive prizes with innaugural program Wendy Walsh Guest Writer wwalsh@lhup.edu Out of the hundreds of freshmen who entered LHU this semester, four received prizes because of their level of involvement with a new program geared towards immersing new students in campus activities.

Many students were involved in the Passport to Success program and there were many upper-class students that stated they were jealous because this was not something that they were a part of when they first came to LHU. The program allowed freshmen to win prizes. The minimum to submit a passport for a prize was set up to attend 12 of the 20 programs on the passport but the organizers accepted all of them that were submitted. Randi Felton and Sarah Granitski attended all 20 programs and were awarded special prizes.

The program was an ini-

tiative for new students to get involved and engaged at LHU early in the semester. The program ran for the month of September.

“As a first time program, we were very pleased to see people collaborate to plan and promote the program,” said Tyana Lange, associate vice president for enrollment management.

The orientation committee was charged with this program and used many of the events already planned on campus to get people to attend, such as the VIP Career Fair, International Office Open House, Athletic Events, the Blood Drive, Family Day and even visiting their advisor would earn a signature on the passport.

A few of the passport programs were directed primarily to new students as they began their college life to help them adjust to all of the changes they may experience.

These programs included nationally known educators such as the Sex Ed Boot Camp which was a presentation encouraging students to make better decisions

about their sexuality.

Other programs, Wise Choices and One Nighters, were to educate students about the effects of drugs and alcohol consumption on campus.

There was also College Cost 101; The $ and Sense of a College Education which was held to inform students about the importance of taking advantage of their investment in college.

This program pointed out the value of an LHU degree in comparison to universities and showed the social and economic benefits of a higher education.

“It also became a way to promote many of our programs that happen on campus and in the residence halls,” said Dr. Allison, interim vice president for student affairs. “The idea was to encourage involvement and belonging to a community.”

Every Thursday night at 12:30 a.m. the coolest party is aired on television; “Adam DeVine’s House Party” and everyone is invited.

“Workaholics” co-star Adam DeVine will be showcasing new and popular comedians during the eight-episode season. Each episode mixes scripted storylines with real stand-up, and features an exciting lineup including acts from: Asif Ali, Kevin Barnett, Byron Bowers, Matt Broussard, Pete Davidson, Sean Donnelly, Annie Lederman, the Lucas Brothers, Esther Povitsky, Josh Rabinowitz, Liza Treyger, Brooks Wheelan and Hampton Yount.

DeVine states that idea for the show came from his real life house party stories.

“Blake and I have had house parties back when we lived together,” said DeVine.

DeVine had apparently invited 800 kids to one party in particular when he was a senior in high school.

“When the cops came we were in my backyard and I walked down to them and was like ‘Hmm sorry officers, is the music too loud?’ and they said, ‘No there’s like 600 or so minors drinking here… please just get them inside.’ So I just walked up to my back deck and started screaming ‘RUN THE COPS ARE HERE! EVERYONE GET OUT OF HERE!’ And I ended up getting charged with 22 counts of supplying minors with alcohol,” said DeVine.

Aside from DeVine’s house party inspirations, the idea for the television show is one that DeVine has had for a very long time.

“I had the idea for a long time, nothing against standard sitcom; you see these comics that you don’t know and you’re like ‘yeah that guy is pretty funny’ but you don’t really know their name.

That’s where that idea came in. To give some of my really funny stand up friends a shot to show that they are more than a guy that can stand up inform of a microphone,” said DeVine.

DeVine, who has been performing stand-up comedy ever since he was a young adult is very well known for his character “Bumper” in the 2012 film, “Pitch Perfect” and for his character Adam DeMamp in “Workaholics”.

Despite his history, comedy wasn’t always what DeVine wanted to do with his life.

“When I was really young, I wanted to be president for whatever reason. I just think it was because they talked in an old timey voice and they had to [deliver] cool speeches in front of crowds of people.

So I was like, I want to be a lawyer. And my mom said, no you don’t…and then I finally realized that I wanted to be an actor playing a lawyer so I could be giving speeches in front of people. That sort of morphed into me wanting to be a comedian who could tell jokes in front of people and that is where I decided I wanted to be a stand-up comedian.” Said DeVine.

Although he started out with an interest in acting, DeVine believes that his comedic style comes pretty naturally to him. Be sure to catch DeVine and his stand-up pals at his party, every Thursday at 12:30 a.m.

The lyrics give it a scary story that is accented by the fast beats and hard riffage.

9. Blue Oyster Cult - Don’t Fear The Reaper Released in 1976, Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper” isn’t very scary until you really listen to the lyrics. The story is pretty much told from the point of view of a man whose time has come and he’s asking the person he’s with to come join him and not to “fear the reaper.”

Will Smith - A Nightmare On My Street Released in 1988, Will Smith’s “A Nightmare On My Street” is a shout out to the Halloween classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Smith talks about going to see this same movie with his friends and takes us through a story of Freddie Krueger paying him a visit and attacking him and his friends.

7. Rod Sterling - The Twilight Zone Theme Released in 1964, this song was the theme for the popular “Twilight Zone” series. It’s a short tune with no lyrics but has a lot of creepy music to fill in the short time in plays.

6. Stevie Wonder - Superstition Released in 1972, the content of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” focused on exactly what the title says it does, superstitions. As the lyrics go “you believe in things that you don’t understand,” it deals with things that spook people every day.

3. Danny Elfman - This Is Halloween From Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” this song, along with its cover by Marilyn Manson, are perfect for Halloween. The song is a creepy tune about Halloween as a whole. It was originally song by various ghouls and monsters in the opening of the movie.

2. Bobby “Boris” Pickett & the Crypt-Kickers - Monster Mash Released in 1962, “Monster Mash” talks about different iconic monsters from Halloween. It has been around for the longest time and it is probably one of the most classic songs for the holiday. I can’t think of a reason it shouldn’t be on a Halloween album.

The entire song has lyrics that are all about different thrilling experiences and the video that goes along with this song makes it even more iconic, especially for Halloween. It is definitely a must-have on any Halloween album.

New art exhibit features fantasy and whimsy Kim Mihiel Staff Writer kmihiel@lhup.edu The current art exhibit in Sloan Fine Arts Gallery for the month of November is Jennifer Nelson. Jennifer is an artist residing in North Dakota working as a professor at the University of North Dakota.

Her area of focus is drawing, ink wash and animations.

The Exhibiting series entitled Story World is a series of ink wash drawings featuring mystical and fantasy themed portions of nature and interior furnishings with unusual circumstances.

Jennifer lectured about her work Monday, Oct. 28 and allowed students to preview some of her hand drawn animations featuring homes, and how they are depicted throughout the years through television and the media.

She also spoke of how a majority of her works are inspired by literature she is reading and her life in the Great Plains. She creates each work with its own story and inspiration in mind, making each piece as unique as the previous.

Few monsters have survived the test of time and constant remakes, but “Dracula” has overcome all obstacles and still rules as one of the most iconic literary monsters. Even sparkly vampires cannot tarnish its ageless reputation which is why I felt it was an excellent movie to review for Halloween.

This 1992 film is directed

by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins.

Jonathan Harker (Reeves), a young English lawyer, journeys into the country of Transylvania where he is imprisoned by the vampire Dracula (Oldman) after the undead royal sees a picture of his fiancé, Mina Murray (Ryder). Determined to make Mina his new undead bride, Dracula sets out for Britain bringing terror and death with him.

This adaption of the classic Bram Stoker novel is absolutely fantastic. The movie incorporates the diary/letter style of the book with the characters reading their letters or journal entries throughout the film.

This not only is an excellent transition tool between scenes but also fleshes out the setting and story more.

Anthony Hopkins nails the role of Van Helsing right in the chest.

Meanwhile, Winona Ryder easily portrays Mina’s moral struggle and slow descent into darkness. Her interaction with Oldman’s Dracula causes the audience to sympathize with the vampire.

The dark cinematography has an almost ethereal tone. Its sweeping camera movements entrap the audience’s senses and jar them back to reality with sudden clipped movements.

The effects in this movie were absolutely spectacular which is no surprise since it won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Effects and Best Makeup. The costumes are gorgeous and fit the time period flawlessly.

This enriching horror film is filled with temptation, action and Last week’s answer was: gore. It will easily ensnare your sens“The Shining” es with its dark visuals and twisted characters. So enjoy your Halloween night with Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”.

In “The Sims 3: Supernatural Expansion Pack,” that’s fully possible! As a simulation game, it not only allows you to live as a vampire or almost any other mystical creature of the night, but you can also change other people in your town! Rated T for teens, this spooky game is perfect for Halloween!

Enter the mystical town of Moonlight Falls where strange things happen by the light of the full moon. Create supernatural Sims, such as beautiful fairies, cackling witches, and menacing (or cute) werewolves.

Then stalk the night, use your wand to cast spells, or stay home and scratch the furniture. The world is your blank canvas to create any story you like.

Will you wreck havoc in Moonlight Falls, or stay hidden in the shadows?

I give the gameplay 3 out of 5 stars.

Like previous Sim games, you have to keep

one eye on your characters motives, such as hunger, energy, and so on, as well as what they themselves are doing.

However, the loading and saving times make the game harder to put up with, especially when playing for a short time, such as between classes. There are also a lot of glitches if you use cheats, such as I do.

I give the graphics a 4 out of 5 stars. Just like the rest of the Sim 3 games, you are able to give your Sims actual body structure! It doesn’t stop there, however, as you can give them body hair, tattoos, and multi-colored hair! Not only that, the customization on not just the Sims, but the houses and items inside the houses are unlimited. You could spend hours making your Sim or building and filling in the houses alone!

This is definitely a must have for any fantasy lover. However, it’s only an expansion pack, so “The Sims 3” is required.

Playable only on the PC, The Sims 3 Supernatural can be found on Origin for $19.99, or at Walmart for the same price.

Documentary sparks emotions and inspires “Bad Grandpa” defies “Gravity” Megan Wetzel Staff Writer mew6356@lhup.edu The other week in my Composition class we watched a documentary film (I know it sounds boring) but hear me out because you should totally watch it since “The Central Park Five” is a great film. It was released on November 23, 2012 and directors Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon were the creators behind the film.

They did a superb job of telling the story of five young African-American and Latino teenagers who were convicted of beating and raping a female jogger in New York City’s sacred Central Park in April of 1989. However, they were set free due to someone’s confession.

In the beginning of the film they introduce the five teens, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Kharey Wise. They talk about their life story, family, school, friends and not once do they ever sound like violent boys. The music that they played and the choice of footage from the scene really set the mood towards my curiosity. I liked this part of the film because it provided an insight and background on the

teens. The plot starts to move quickly after this and jumps into the crime scene.

I felt like I was watching a mystery/ suspense film instead of a documentary. I could see clues be given by the historians and journalists that were interviewed and made me realize that the investigators and law enforcement did not do their job correctly.

Since this film was made many years later, the teenage boys are all grown up. While telling their story they seem sad by what they had to go through and even cry at times. This was heart wrenching for me but at the same time it was inspiring to see these men relive what they had to go through and tell the event in specific detail even though they were deeply scarred by it.

What really got me was the film of the boy’s own confessions. They were interrogated for more than 24 hours (I mean who does that to a fifteen year old?) and seeing them distressed on the film was awful to see since they were just teenagers.

Then, to see what they had to go through even though they were wrongfully convicted was even more of a shock. I don’t know if I’m a sympathetic crier or not, but yes I did tear up a bit! If a movie can make me cry then it must be a good one!

In Bad Grandpa, Johnny Knoxville plays a grandfather to a young boy.

They go around causing all sorts of chaos and taping it. What really makes this movie is that the cameras are hidden and the people involved in the situations have no idea it’s not real.

However, I find it interesting that a movie such as Bad Grandpa beat out Gravity. Gravity had a budget of $100 million, an all star cast (consisting of San-

dra Bullock and George Clooney) and has stunning effects and breathtaking scenes. The movie itself is about the two stars on a spacecraft that encounters multiple problems which forces the occupants to struggle to stay alive. It was even released in 3D. But in just one weekend, Bad Grandpa brought in $32 million in sales, while Gravity trailed at $20 million.

Box office analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, has a possible explanation for this.

“This fall has had a lot of really content heavy movies,” he says, “and Bad Grandpa is a relief from that. It really allows audiences to just have fun and check their brain at the door.”

Anonymous crushes hit the web

There’s a new matchmaker in town.

LHU Crushes is a fairly new twitter account that tweets pick-up lines submitted by its followers. It was created by an anonymous user on Oct. 3 and already has over 1,700 followers.

People can anonymously submit their crush tweets via ask.fm or email.

When LHU Crushes receives a submission, they review it and either tweet it right away or hold it until later.

Jaime DeSanto is a student who has been tweeted about a few times.

“I thought it was funny when I saw that someone tweeted about me. I like reading their tweets because the pick-up lines are entertaining,” said DeSanto.

A lot of people are wondering who is behind the match making and how it all started. The Eagle Eye was able to anonymously interview the user who said, “I started LHU Crushes after I saw another schools crushes account and I thought it would be funny if Lock Haven had one.”

“The hardest part was getting the word out there. I made about seven flyers and hung them around campus and from there it took off. Once people re tweeted my tweets, I received over 300 followers in one day and a week after that I had about 400 followers,” the user said.

Some of the tweets are sweet and romantic, while others are racy and sexual. Alicia Minnich is another student who was tweeted about and she said, “I think it’s funny but I can see how some girls who are tweeted about might feel violated.”

But 1,700 followers might simply think the tweets are entertaining.

“People like gossip and they are usually too scared to tell their crush in person so I think that’s why so many people like it,” said Minnich.

LHU Crushes receives about 50 submissions a day and keeps getting more popular with every tweet.

“I’m happy so many people like my account,” the creator said. “It wouldn’t be as great without the Haven Nation and I thank them. Keep the crushes coming!”

#throwbackthursday In 1999 Lock Haven University was considering legislation that would allow campus safety officers to carry guns with them on campus. Many students though that this was an unnecessary addition to the safe nature of Lock Haven.

Today PASSHE is considering legislation that would allow students to carry guns with them on campus. Lock Haven students have had some safety concerns after recent crimes that have been committed.

Many PASSHE schools are already considering allowing guns on campus which has some students excited and others anxious.

write a novel, but it falls to the wayside and never gets completed. But is it more likely we do something if we have a time frame?

Few people are aware that in November a creative event is occurring all around the globe. It is one that inspires and motivates thousands of people to write 50,000 words of their own personal novel.

And they’re ordinary people – college students, parents, employees, and professionals – all participating in the annual event.

3. The Internet is there to help.

In order to officially participate, writers have to go to www.nanowrimo.org and sign up. But doing so gives them access to hundreds of other writers undergoing the same challenge and offering up their own knowledge. What they know can be both astounding and a little frightening.

1. It isn’t about quality.

4. It isn’t completely without gratification.

This may sound counterproductive to some writers, but it is true. The whole point of NaNoWriMo is to have a rough draft, not a published piece.

Editing may be required, but is discouraged until the end. Is it great that your editing skills are so finely honed that you want to go back and fix any errors as you see them? Absolutely, come work at the Eagle Eye and we have an unpaid job as a copy editor for you. However, the editor is often forgotten in November to make room for the unbridled frenzy of getting those 50,000 words written.

2. The Deadline encourages writing.

In some cases, it’s a discount off a product or a free consultation about your novel with a publisher. One of their biggest sponsors is CreateSpace, one of Amazon’s subsidiaries that allows people to self-publish their book and have it available in paperback or kindle form.

5.There is a fellowship between the writers.

The hundreds of writer who are willing to help are also doing this themselves, and they will engage

in word wars to boost both their word count and yours. It offers a sense of camaraderie. If you’re reading this on Nov. 1 and you think you missed your chance, you haven’t. There is still time to sign up and be part of the hectic experience that is NaNoWriMo.

MapMyRun, an app created specifically for runners, is dedicated to keeping your fitness life a bit more on track.

With the option of personalizing your own fitness profile you are set with a workout that is perfect for individual work out plans.

You are able to record every part of your run including your distance, duration, pace, speed, elevation of you run. The GPS map keeps track of the route you traveled on for each run.

The app also allows you to easily keep track of your nutrition and food intake for each day. Then when it comes time for your workout, MapMyRun gives you the number of calories burned.

All the details of your workout are recorded and stored for you so at the end of the day, week, or month you are able to see your progress.

The only downfall to this app is in the phone you use. It’s easier to wear a watch to track your run versus carrying around your smartphone. Purchasing an arm band specifically for holding your phone is an easy fix to this problem.

Whether you’re a fitness junkie or new to the game, this app will simplify the idea of keeping track of your weekly workouts.

Lock Haven Love: same sex relationships Brooke Kibler Staff Writer bkibler@lhup.edu Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, or questioning people have relationships just as any other student would, the only difference is in the people they love.

Kayla Johnston, a senior pre-physician assistant, has been with the same woman for over a year.

Johnston has a special sort of relationship.

She started off as a male when she met her girlfriend, but over time Johnston began to see that she wanted to be a woman.

She first started to realize it when she noticed that she was not becoming aroused by her girlfriend, “I started to think I was gay, but that was quickly nullified when I realize I didn’t like men,” Johnston said.

Johnston began her transition and her partner stood by her side. Johnston’s girlfriend was unsure if she would be able to handle the emotional stress of Johnston’s transition, “but she’s done just fine,” said Johnston. Through the transformation her girlfriend has stayed faithful and supportive.

Terrell Young, a junior criminal justice major has been dating the same man for seven months.

Young came out to his family and friends his junior year of high school after he realized dating girls just wasn’t for him.

“Slowly overtime I just realized that I was attracted to guys a little bit more than what was considered normal, and eventually I just admitted it to myself,” said Young.

While people walk around Lock Haven with prejudices against the LGBTQ people on campus they forget that we are living our lives in the same. They have fights, they love, they sup-

port each other, find new restaurants and lounge around relaxing like other couples do.

In the words of Macklemore “No freedom till we’re equal, damn right I support it.”

Media influences views on sex

Social media has become not only part of our daily routines but a part of our lifestyles as well. Many students at LHU have a Twitter and a large number of students are following Lock Haven Crushes. The majority of the tweets have to do with sexual references and casual sex. This leads to the unanswered question of how do LHU students actually feel about casual sex and does gender play a major role in these opinions and lifestyle choices?

After interviewing 20 male students and 20 female students the results demonstrated that 14 out of twenty students feel indifferent towards casual sex.

This survey also showed that 14 of the 40 students are against casual sex and 12 of the students interviewed were in favor of casual sex.

The majority of the females interviewed, 12 out of 20, were against casual sex. Eight out of the 20 males were in favor of casual sex and four were against it. Based on these results, it can be determined that gender does play a role in students’ opinions.

However, in today’s society we are surrounded by the idea of casual sex every day. Through television, movies and magazines these means of mass communication are informing the public that casual sex is a normal part of society.

Current popular shows on TV that influence this idea are “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met

Your Mother”. “Remember Me” and “Don John” are recent films that have been released that contain the idea that casual sex is normal. Almost every “Cosmopolitan” magazine features stories about random hot hookups.

Which medium is our society affected by the most? After interviewing the same students as listed above, the results concluded that 22 out of the 40 interviewed determined that movies have the most influence on their attitudes towards casual sex.

The next time that you see someone tweet about a casual sex encounter, remember that based on this survey, the majority of students are in fact indifferent to the idea of casual sex and that movies are the main media source influencing these lifestyle choices.

Youth a sweet treat

Today, we celebrate Halloween, a holiday abundant with pumpkins, ghosts, goblins, and vampires. Halloween allows people to be somebody or something else for a day, which makes it a very thrilling event.

For children, Halloween is a day unlike any other; children are able to dress up, go to Halloween parties and of course go trick-or-treating!

As children dressed in their costumes parade from door-to-door receiving all kinds of sweet treats and goodies, it is an experience unlike anything else for the young and old. Is it possible for a child to be too old to trick-or-treat? Or should kids be allowed to be kids for as long as they feel they are able to?

As a child, Halloween was my favorite time of the year! Picking out a costume, Halloween parties at school and mostly importantly trick-or-

treating! Trick-or-treating was a magical time for me, pretending to be someone I wasn’t and receiving free candy. What could be better when you are a child? Of course, there aren’t many feelings that can compare to dumping out your candy and sorting through the good and bad stuff afterwards!

However, as the years progressed and I got older, I gradually lost interest in trick-or-treating and gave it up around the age of 13. However, for some kids, trick-or-treating is still fun for them at this age – is that a problem?

Becky Ahrensfield, a senior at Bloomsburg University said, “I think trick-or-treating is fine for children and teenagers to participate in. Whether it’s going trick-or-treating or a Halloween party, kids should be allowed to be kids, [at least] until they graduate high school.”

Nicole Matrey, a social worker also disagrees with an age limit on trick-or-treating saying, “I think trick or treating should be open to kids of all ages. Kids should have options available to them to do whatever they want to. However, I think the

older you get the less you want to go trick or treating and the more you want to go to Halloween parties and whatnot.”

According to the Associated Press, states such as Virginia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Maryland have placed bans on children older than 13 from trick-or-treating. Many of these bans include a fine of at least $100.00 if a child is caught trick-or-treating who is older than 12 years old.

Halloween should be a time when kids can have fun for one night without any consequences, and now some states are stepping in and controlling how kids can have fun.

Trick-or-treating or any Halloween festivity should be granted to children and teenagers alike.

We need to keep in mind that kids should be allowed to be kids; don’t push them to grow up any faster than they have to.

Let Halloween be a day where they can make memories, share laughs and most important, enjoy being a kid. Childhood eventually fades away, but adulthood lasts forever.

Journalistic jeopardy

Halloween is demarcated by a massive amnesia of many women about dressing for the weather, obscene amounts of candy that would disturb any good nutritionist and a celebration of the spooky. We imagine ghosts, ghouls, goblins, witches and black cats when pondering Halloween. Even the haunted houses and fright-themed activities some choose to partake in are all celebrations, in their own slightly masochistic ways.

But the scary things we celebrate aren’t really very scary when it comes down to brass tacks. A haunting ghost story can do little more than create an intense fear and paranoia. That might not be very fun, but I don’t think it drives too many people to insanity outside of horror flicks. The pain of being startled by a stranger at a haunted happening dissipates sooner or later.

Some horrors in life don’t fade so fast as those we honor with the Halloween spirit. In fact, people face dangers every day that no one ever thinks about. Being included or excluded from certain groups determines what threats you do and don’t consider or even know exist. Journalists face peril every day.

From the petty to the priority, an onslaught of risks exist and they are all braved for a love of delivering information and a dedication to people.

At the slighter end of the spectrum is a danger to the reputations of writers and editors. When you attach your name to something and it’s published, it’s pretty hard to take it back. If you cover something, even if it isn’t something you necessarily mean to endorse or wouldn’t normally want yourself associated with, a critical or negative reception can still be tied to you, fair or not.

I am an editor and a writer tying myself both to my own words and those of the people I publish every week. When something someone writes isn’t received well, it can fall on my shoulders. I haven’t experienced any enduring judgment from those close to me, but there have been a few instances of someone in my academic life treating me differently in a negative way because of something I’ve printed. Not everyone is up to the task of opening themselves to such indiscriminate scrutiny.

Sometimes personal safety is on the line as well. Journalists are on the forefront of the action whether that means kneeling in the dirt to get the scoop on a community garden or courageously inserting themselves into war-torn and crime-riddled regions.

Just this past weekend, the New York Times ran an article that captured the terrifying story of a 22-year-old photojournalist who was gang-raped in Mumbai, India. She and a colleague were attempting to get good photos when they were deceived and then held hostage by five local men who liked to rape for fun.

Likewise Not Anymore: A Story of Revolution - Syria, produced by Journeyman Pictures features the story of a journalist in who is “spending her 20’s at war” because she feels she must for her country. About eight minutes in, we see a little girl singing for the journalist when a bomb hits. Dust and screaming fill the screen. It’s an intense reminder of the sacrifices that are made to bring people the truth.

Whether it’s physical assault or emotional, people face obstacles and hazards everyday; journalists are but one lone example. We live in precarious times. Halloween gives us an opportunity to laugh at fear and make it a little easier to cope with, but we need not forget what people stand up against to fight for whatever we believe in.

4: Water scarcity: You get your water from a tap or from a bottle.

Most people don’t think of its origins beyond that. Being located by the mighty Susquehanna, we think about an over-abundance of water more than a lack of it.

However, around the country the demand for water is slowly beginning to overwhelm supply. Some western states are already looking at a high-risk of serious water shortages within a few years.

5: Influx of dangerous synthetic drugs: Drug laws were created to protect people. We all learn in health class about the schedules drugs are classified into, but no one tells you about the Federal Analog Act which allows chemically similar substances to schedule I and II drugs to be legally treated the same way. However, constantly adding to the list of illegal substances isn’t stopping the problem. Instead it’s forcing people to come up with new synthetic drugs that copy-cat the “classics.” They’re new and often more dangerous. That’s a big part of why the war on drugs is failing-our laws are inspiring the creation of a wider variety of drugs that can be abused.

6: Privacy: No matter what your privacy settings are or what firewalls you have or encryptions you use, someone out there can get around all of your security. Your computer is vulnerable, as is your cell phone, your tablet, your everything. An illusion of safety is probably good to keep the general public from panicking, but it’s still important to know when and how you are and aren’t truly secure.

Caleb Walton (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) threw three touchdown passes and the Bald Eagles turned in a tremendous defense effort as the Lock Haven University football snapped a 30-game road-losing streak at Millersville on Saturday, Oct. 26, 26-14.

The Bald Eagles (3-5, 2-3 PSAC East) scored 13 second-quarter points, thanks to two interceptions and a late fumble recovering, which helped beat Millersville (1-7, 1-4 PSAC East) for the first time since 1959.

The win also marks the third of the year for third-year head coach John Allen and his Bald Eagles, giving Lock haven its most wins since The Haven went 3-8 during the 2004 season.

Prior to today, Lock Haven’s last win on the road came in 2007 at Clarion (11/10/07).

Walton, who was making his second consecutive start and the just the second of his career, threw for 181 yards and three TDs. He was 16of-29 passing with no interceptions. Walton hit three different players for scores, including David Cook (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Jesse Hoover (Curwensville, Pa./Curwensville) and Matthew Gibson (Newville, Pa./Big Spring).

Brandon Brader (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) carried the ball 10 times for 25 yards, while Gibson added 23 yards on 10 carries. Walton rushed for 23 yards.

The Bald Eagles defense once again flexed its muscles and proved why it is one of the top units in the PSAC and in Division II football. The Bald Eagles picked off each of Millersville’s three QB’s

once today.

The Haven’s balanced defensive effort was led by five different players, who recorded five total tackles, including George Christas (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown), Kyle White (Allentown, Pa./ Parkland), Matt Kirchner (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), Chris Englar (York, Pa./Central York) and Nick Suriano (Atco, N.J./Shawnee).

Marc Olivo (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had two of Lock Haven’s three interceptions and the Bald Eagles recorded five sacks on the day.

Lock Haven led 13-0 at halftime, scoring all 13 points in the second quarter. It was the Bald Eagles first halftime lead all year.

Kicker Alex Boumerhi (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) put LHU up 3-0 with 8:57 left in the second quarter on a school-record 48-yard field goal. The long field goal was set up after the first of two Olivo interceptions.

Late in the second quarter Mike Williams (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) picked off Millersville’s Jared Pierce and returned it 42 yards, setting up Lock Haven’s first TD of the game. Two plays later, Walton hit Cook on an 18-yard pass for a touchdown with just six seconds remaining the half.

Lock Haven wasn’t done and with just three second left in the first half, the Bald Eagles recovered a Marauder fumble in field goal range at the MU 23-yard line. With no time left on the clock Boumerhi connected on a 40-yarder.

Hoover caught a 37-yard pass from Walton for his 11th career touchdown late in the third quarter and Gibson hauled in a TD-pass from Walton on a fake field goal with 5:02 left in the fourth to round out the Bald Eagle scoring.

Lock Haven travels to East Stroudsburg next Saturday, Nov. 2 for 3:05 p.m. kickoff.

White has led the team to an ongoing seven game winning streak as they prepare for a weekend match against Saint Francis and Lehigh.

“We are starting to get noticed more often,” White said. “A manager from Evergreen approached me and told me “good job” so that is pretty cool.”

The team is 10-2 overall with a perfect road record of 4-0. This notoriety has grown bigger than just Lock Haven. White said her hometown newspaper, the Patriot of Harrisburg, ran a piece on her and her accomplishments. There was a

certain twinkle in her eye and yet she played it off like it was average news.

“White is a great leader, always has been,” said long time coach, Pat Rudy. “Her best attributes are her vocal leadership and the poised way of commanding the defense. That’s Elaina, she is always in the right place at the right time.”

White does not appear to have to worry about job security considering no one in the nation has saved a bigger percentage of shots.

White is currently near the top of the Division I charts for save percentage at .835 per cent (according to NCAA.com). White is keeping Duke’s goalie Lauren Blazing in the dust, as the two have been consistently competitive all season.

White’s co-captain Kelly Harsh said, “She always motivates us as a team and she’s always so into it.”

Her teammates have been feeding off White’s mojo with other play-

ers having standout seasons as well.

“We have to keep together as a team and all coincide,” White said about how the team will continue this streak.

“We’ve been calling [White] “Optimist Prime” this season because she is always working hard,” said teammate Taylor Kennedy.

“Optimist Prime” is a play on the classic Transformers robot leader Optimus Prime who is known for always doing the right thing.

White is doing plenty of things right this season and as Coach Rudy said, “She has come a long way since her freshman year and we couldn’t ask for a better leader.”

So keep an eye out on campus because right now we have a robot in disguise in Elaina White.

Taking back what Tommy took Sean McGovern Staff Writer smcgover@lhup.edu First, Stephen Strasburg, rookie pitching phenom for the Nationals was out, then this year, Mets young ace, Matt Harvey was taken out too. The possibility for needing Tommy John surgery is a problem all baseball players potentially face.

Lock Haven University senior, Brandon Renoll knows all too well what the surgery is like and has experienced the long road to recovery that follows.

Tommy John surgery, named for the former LA Dodgers pitcher, refers to the operation to repair torn ligaments in the arm.

“Recovering from Tommy John was unlike anything I’ve ever been through,” Renoll said.

He lost all of the 2013 baseball season due to this injury. Pitching delivery puts an immense amount of pressure on the elbow and the repetitive motion wears it out quicker.

“Not being able to play baseball for the entire year was an incredibly difficult challenge for me,”

Renoll said.

He continued to go to practices and helped out as much as possible. But watching the games became too difficult for him emotionally because he was not able to pitch.

During the 2013 season, Lock Haven baseball felt the impact of losing Renoll.

“They struggled at times due to the lack of pitchers on the staff,” Renoll said. “The team went from about 12 pitchers down to 8 by the conclusion of the season.”

He had a vigorous road to recovery that involved adjusting his workout and focusing on proper conditioning.

“My doctor emphasized how important my lower half and core are to pitching,” Renoll said. “And my arm acts more as a pendulum in delivering the ball to the plate.

After having the surgery, Renoll said he has gained understanding on proper pitching mechanics.

“Throughout high school and even my freshman year I wouldn’t stretch at all and I feel that had a significant impact on the injury,” Renoll said.

He will use the fall preseason to continue to fo-

cus on proper mechanics and taking good care of his body.

“Having a perspective of being an athlete and now a coach, I always try to motivate my athletes if they are injured, “ said Kevin Hacker, senior Health and Phys Ed. student/coach in the Keystone Central School District.

This is also true with participants in other sports.

“Since I was a wrestler all of my life, we train and condition ourselves to the best of our abilities,” said sophomore wrestler, Kaleb LeMaire. “During practices or matches, we are always likely to get injured from throws and just how physical the sport is.”

Renoll has personal goals and expectations as he gets ready for the season.

“I want to gain more confidence in my ability to perform and to be a conference starter again in the spring,” Renoll said. “I want to focus on pitch location, velocity and break on my curveball after losing complete confidence in that pitch. I want to contribute positively to the team’s chemistry and be a leader on and off the field.”

Doug Spatafore dspatafo@lhup.edu Sports Information Coming off Saturday’s PSAC Championship, the Lock Haven University men’s cross country team has taken over the top spot in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Atlantic Region weekly rankings.

Edinboro, who had been No. 1 all season, falls to No. 2.

The Bald Eagles beat the Fighting Scots by 35 points on the way to the PSAC title on Saturday at Kutztown.

It was Lock Haven’s first team championship since 2009 and sixth overall.

The Haven was led by senior Alex Monroe (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), who became Lock Haven’s first ever three-time PSAC champion.

A portion of the Lock Haven squad will be in action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Lock Haven’s LHU Go Fast River Run. Lock Haven and Edinboro will get another crack at each other on Saturday, Nov. 9 when the region’s best put it all on the line at the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships, hosted by LHU.
