Sandusky victim speaks to class Joshua Conklin Staff Writer jconklin@lhup.edu Aaron Fisher, his mother Dawn Hennessy, and his psychiatrist Mike Gillum came to Lock Haven University to talk with a communication class: Sports, Society and the Media on Sept. 27. This was an odd scene for Aaron because this was the first time he spoke to his peer group.

They have done Q & A sessions with a lot of groups but Mike said, “usually we are talking to law enforcement or young children about awareness.”

Aaron ran the class and called on students. The intimate sit down session had a light feel despite the harsh topic.

How one learned to cope after such a traumatic event and if one can feel “normal” after such an experience was a topic students were interested in.

“Define normal,” Aaron said.

“I have bills to pay, friends to hangout with, a mom who is always on my case. I’m as normal as could be.”

Jerry Sandusky took Aaron under his wing at the age of 11 through the Second Mile program, which supports young boys who don’t have a male figure in their lives. In the years following, Aaron said he was sexually abused by Sandusky. Sandusky is now 69 years old and facing enough years in prison to keep him there well past his Judgment Day. “He’s just going to sit there and rot,” Dawn said as she glanced at Aaron. Aaron agreed and said, “I’m satisfied that he can’t do this to anyone else and I’m glad I help numerous other kids.”

Throughout these years the mental manipulation seems to be the thing that has stayed with Aaron the longest.

“I have extreme anxiety,” he said. “Also conversion disorder. For example, when I’m running, I get a side cramp but the conversion disorder makes it feel like I have a railroad spike going through my ribs.”

Aaron has been hospitalized for anxiety and as Dawn recalls it looked like he was having a seizure.

“A lot of M.Ds don’t understand conversion disorder,” said Mike. “Whenever Aaron ended up in the hospital I would have to call and tell them why there was no response to all that morphine and sure enough he was fine.”

Conversion disorder used to be known as hysterical disorder back in the days of Freud.

“If you have a lot of anxiety it will manifest in a physical way like physical pain or disability of some kind,” Mike added. “People have actually gone blind because of anxiety.”

While most students feel that LHU is a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community, some feel this is not fully true.

“People are blind to things that don’t directly affect them,” Megan Penny, president of LHU’s Gay-Straight Alliance, said.

To continue making LHU a comfortable environment for the whole community, Athlete Ally founder Hudson Taylor held a program about the importance of tolerance and acceptance, particularly in athletics.

Three years ago, Taylor founded Athlete Ally to combat homophobia in athletic communities by raising awareness and increasing support of LGBT athletes.

Taylor wrestled Division I for the University of Maryland and majored in theater arts. Until making the transition from a boarding school with about 400 students to a college more than 35,000 strong, Taylor said he would not have called himself an ally. “’LGBT’? I didn’t know.

During his freshman theater class, one of Taylor’s classmates, Matt, announced that he was gay. He said he “didn’t know the proper protocol.”

After a brief silence, another student started to clap. Soon everyone was clapping for and congratulating their newly-outed classmate. Taylor said the class fully accepted Matt.

Taylor couldn’t help trying to imagine how his wrestling team mates would have reacted had this situation unfolded in the locker room rather than in his theater class.

Growing up as a wrestler, Taylor said he had learned all of the stereotypes – one of the biggest being that gay men could not succeed as athletes.

He thought about all of the times he stayed quiet while others made derogatory remarks concerning the LGBT community.

“We all have an innate desire to conform, to fit in,” he said.

“When you hear someone say something they shouldn’t, it’s easier to stay silent.”

Taylor’s train of thought led him to a decision: “That isn’t the legacy I want to leave behind…” he said. “I had that ‘Aha!’ moment: maybe the things I say matter. Maybe I can be better, kinder.”

Taylor explained the four principals he lives by every day.

These principals help him keep Athlete Ally going.

1. The Platinum Rule: Treat others, as they want to be treated.

Taylor pointed out that approximately one out of four LGBT youths are kicked out of their homes when their parents find out sexuality.

2. Maximize happiness and minimize suffering.

“Boil it down to the little things and the big goal becomes more attainable,” Taylor said.

3. Always act, so long as the burden does not outweigh the benefits.

Taylor used community service work as an example. If you

could change someone’s life for the better by doing just five minutes of community service work, why wouldn’t you? He said creating an inclusive culture for the LGBT community is even easier.

“It takes about two seconds,” he said. “You decide not to say that stupid demeaning thing, or you call someone else out for saying that stupid demeaning thing.”

4. You are responsible for whatever history you are a part of.

“He showed us that we all have to be the leaders to get to the bigger picture,” said Shelby Waite, a sophomore majoring in disability and community services. “If we all wait for someone else, no one will lead.”

Taylor painted a picture for his audience. He told everyone to imagine they are standing at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean and the beautiful sunset beyond. The sunset stands for an all-inclusive society where LGBT members live equally. Allies keep taking steps forward, they walk toward the fear. There is no room for anyone to stand in front.

“Our responsibility is to describe the beautiful sunset to those who stand behind us. Before long, that sunset can be a reality,” Taylor said. “I challenge you to go toward the fear.”

Black women still enslaved So how about that shut by ‘Baby Mama’ stereotype government down?

After working on this project for years, Venetria Patton, Ph.D., the Director of African American Studies at Purdue University, came to Lock Haven University to present her research through a presentation entitled “Baby Mamas, Beloved, and Claiming True Motherhood.”

Patton explained that being a baby mama is still a stereotype that black women grapple with.

“I think that black women are stigmatized. Black women are not viewed as ideal mothers but as problematic mothers…it’s because of the history of slavery and the fact that black women are not seen as mothers but as breeders that we can even conceive Michelle Obama as a baby momma.”

Through interest in the history of slavery and how slavery has been presented in modern literature, Patton begun her re-

search.

“I was intrigued by the fact that I was reading very different texts; one was a love story in which a woman falls in love with a ghost and is more of a popular culture thing, “The Hand I Fan With”

by Tina Ansa and then Toni Morrison with “Beloved.” Both with very different ends of the literature spectrum but in both you are dealing with ghosts.” Patton said.

Patton wanted to discover what the attraction was with

ghosts coming up in all these different novels about African American motherhood.

“Basically for the two texts that I talked about, dealing with the ghosts of slavery was a common theme and what better way to do that than by using ghosts?

Our country is haunted by this past and it is still something that we have not put to rest and what better way to depict that then by using ghost stories. I think that these writers are using these ghost stories to revise our thinking of our slave past.” Patton said.

Patton’s presentation spoke about reincarnation and on the stages of life from child to adult and elder to ancestor. The books that Patton analyzed use the theme of reincarnation and the passing on of ancestral memory to emphasize on African American motherhood.

All information that Dr. Patton spoke about can be found in her recently published work, “The Grasp That Reaches Beyond the Grave: Ancestral Call in Black Women’s Text.”

Students begin annual canned goods drive for local food pantries Chris Gill Staff Writer cjg9648@lhup.edu It’s that time again Lock Haven students, the 5th annual Hunger Bowl is here!

Now before you get worried this is not the same as the Hunger Games. There will be no fights to the death. No, this event is to help raise awareness and to collect as much non-perishable food for local food pantries as possible.

The event is sponsored

by Americorp through the LHU MountainServe Center for Community Service, and will be happening for the entire month of October.

Students can choose to donate as individuals or as a part of a larger organization. The person or organization that ultimately donates the most non-perishable items wins the Hunger Bowl and gets to walk away with the trophy.

“Students can feel free to donate goods and drop them off in Raub 103, explained Schlick. “If they belong to a club or organization you guys

could all get together and collect canned goods and basically the way we are getting people interested in it is whatever group wins gets a little trophy.

The winner of the Hunger Bowl will be announced on Nov. 2.

All the food collected will go to local food banks and the Salvation Army.

Those students who wish to donate but don’t belong to a participating organization shouldn’t get discouraged.

“It’s about how many cans we can get,” Schlick said.

“Not really sure what to think just yet. I kind of wanted to see how it turns out and make an honest opinion of it,” - Marshall Lawvere, Biochemistry sophomore.

“I think the shut down is a little over dramatic. My father is a civilian who works for the government and is now not receiving a pay check for this week.

As someone being directly affected, all I have to say is ‘Why can’t we be friend?’”

2013 Wildcat comic con in Williamsport Kathleen Ellison A&E Editor kae742@lhup.edu This past Saturday, Sept. 28, marked the second year of the Wildcat Comic Con at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. The closing ceremony speaker and star of the convention was actor Tim Russ, known for his roles on “Star Trek Voyager”, “iCarly”, and “Samantha Who?”.

The convention was also guest to many authors and artists including Dave Roman (author of several graphics novels including “Teen Boat!” and “X-Men: Misfits”), Erica Schroeder (voice actor whose roles include “Yu-gi-oh”, “One Piece”, and “Astonishing X-Men”), Alex Simmons (creator of the critically acclaimed series “BlackJack”), John Green (artist who worked with Disney, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks and DC Comics) and many more.

The convention held a number of events such as a cosplay contest, “Wildcat Comic Con Quizzo”, a cosplay parade, “The Yin and Yang of Voice Acting”, author signings and more.

“Breaking Bad” breaks away from quality in series finale Angela Fries Editor-In-Chief afries@lhup.edu The series finale of Breaking Bad may not have been what everyone wanted, but the ending was what the show needed to wrap up.

Walter White, the main character that everyone loves to hate, tied up loose ends in the series finale last Sunday night at 9 p.m. on AMC. Although the finale was not as exciting as the episodes leading up to it, the series finale did what it was meant to do, put Walter White to rest. There are a ton of questions that need to be answered in the final episode.

What was Walter planning to do with the ricin?

Would he make up with Junior and his family? Would he take care of the Nazis and get his money back? All of these questions were answered but without the normal suspense Breaking Bad has become known for.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Walter begins his rampage by confronting the

Schwartzes. He convinces them to launder money for his family. After Walter finds out there is still blue meth on the street, he seeks Lydia out and uses the ricin to kill her.

He realizes Jesse is still alive and begins planning his revenge on the Nazis.

Later, he visits his family. Walter says goodbye to his wife and holds his daughter for one last time. He watches his son from a distance, knowing that he will die with his son hating him.

The biggest turning point in this part of the episode is when Walter admits that he wasn’t making meth for his family, he was doing it to for himself. He was doing it ‘to feel alive.’

Finally, Walter shows up at the Aryan brotherhood’s compound and uses a machine gun rigged in his car to kill them all and save Jesse.

In the end, Walter dies from a gunshot wound and Jesse drives off into the night. The cops show up just as Walter is saying goodbye to his lifes work. He takes his last breath and the camera zooms out.

Although a lot happened in this episode, it was not up to the Breaking Bad standards that we’ve all grown to love but I think it was the closure we all needed. Photo courtesy sociopathworld.com

Viewers finally gain level seven clearance Samantha Shirk Staff Writer sxs1090@lhup.edu Agents with cool toys and neat techniques hit T.V. on Sept. 24, 2013 -did I mention that one of their main goals is protecting heroes? ABC’s new show “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is one you don’t want to miss, especially for those of you who really liked “The Avengers”.

The show takes us through different missions of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Pilot episode picks up right where “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3” left us. We are again introduced to Agent Phil Coulson who worked very closely with The Avengers and had a stack of Captain America trading cards (he never did get those signed). We are informed he faked his death in an attempt to motivate The Avengers.

The Purge After Earth Much Ado About Nothing The Hangover Part III

very lovable character although, like in “The Avengers”, he is an agent who really knows his stuff especially in this premiere where he’s showing a new recruit named Agent Grant Ward the ropes.

The episode itself started off pretty slow but most first episodes of a T.V. series do. However, don’t let that turn you off. The episode is quick to reel you in with the different character personalities and each individual’s witty comments.

Of course... what would a show about S.H.I.E.L.D. agents be without superheroes? In the “Pilot” episode, we are introduced to a man named Mike Peterson. Mike is a single father struggling to find a job and create a close relationship with his son.

One of the times he’s out with his son he stumbles upon a burning building where he is quick to go in and save a screaming woman, like a true superhero. Skye, an impressive hacker capable of hacking into government files, sees his heroic act

and goes to him about embracing being a hero. She feels S.H.I.E.L.D. are the bad guys and quickly becomes a big part of the show.

Throughout the episode they play with your mind and like to make you really think about who the good guys are. However it is through Skye and Mike that we find out “Extremis”, or the Mandarin formula, is back in a new form and now called “Centipede.”

This was really fascinating to me, simply because they wove everything together so perfectly.

They repeatedly referenced what happened in “The Avengers”, kept mentioning the heroes themselves and managed to work “Iron Man 3” in, all in one episode.

I thought it was really neat. All in all, I’d say the show was a great idea and I cannot wait for the new episode to premiere. Set your reminders everyone and tune in to “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”!

Halloween movies to get you Guess the in the trick or treat mood Movie Quote!

Get into the Halloween spirit by watching these Halloween movies: Halloween: Make sure to watch the original version and step back into 1978. This is one of my favorite movies to watch around Halloween. Not only is the entire film featured around the spooky holiday but it has one of the most notorious serial killers of all time, Michael Myers. It is definitely not Halloween without this villain!

Hocus Pocus: For those of you who are not scary movie fans, this one is perfect! Most of us here on campus have grown to love these three dim-witted witches. This film is also featured around Halloween and has plenty of witches, a zombie and a talking black cat that will easily put you in the Halloween spirit!

Van Helsing: This film

is perfect for those of you who enjoy action movies. This film takes place in historical Transylvania, Romania the landmark of Dracula’s Castle. This film is great for those of you who enjoyed the movie “Frankenstein” with Robert De Niro.

“Van Helsing” is full of vampires, werewolves, Dracula and Mr. Hyde.

All these timeless villains will definitely get you in the mood for Halloween.

After watching these three films there is no doubt that you will be in the Halloween spirit. Other Halloween and scary movies that also recommend are: Sleepy Hollow, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Frankenstein (1994 version), Practical Magic, House of 1,000 Corpses and Psycho (black and white version).

Andrea Hoelscher grew up in Iowa, but currently lives in Indiana and got her undergraduate degree in drawing and photography from the University of North Iowa.

She received her masters at the Art Institute of Chicago and has had solo exhibitions both nationally and abroad.

She is currently a professor at the University of Southern Indiana.

Her “Little Woman” series depicts the struggles and journeys of the women through their environments which are abstracted realities of what we see daily. Most of the women are surrounded by domestic objects, which, instead of completing the tasks, imply that the women explore the location.

Her inner architecture is a series of scanned negatives placed side by side to give the viewer the perception of a single cohesive space when it is not actually a panoramic shot, but multiple shots sides by side.

She attempts to capture the spirit of building through her specific selection of shots. Hoelscher’s art went on display in Sloan Fine Arts Building on Sept. 9 and will be on display until Oct. 25.

Quirky band stirkes a chord Kingdom Hearts has the hearts of fans Spencer McCoy Staff Writer smccoy@lhup.edu What is there to say about Seth and his 23 band members, or Psaegz pronounced “Say-Jezz”? When I first put on my headphones to play this quirky folk band’s album, “Tin Wood Soldier” I knew I was in for an interesting ride.

The first thing my ears were blessed with hearing was about a minute of unrecognizable words. However, being the open hearted person I am, I stuck it out. The clashing of cymbals and strange noises eventually settled into a smooth rhythm. As the album continues it turns into the type of music that makes you want to get up and dance around a campfire.

The music was always upbeat and provided an overall sense of joy as the tracks played one after another.

The music the band put out was originally intended for Seth’s puppet show known as The Rock Opera, luckily the band realized the potential they had and expanded on the idea. Seth and the 23 Psaegz started touring and were gaining popularity as they played in small venues all over the country. Band members play instruments that people may find around their house or at garage sale down the road. Instruments range from Keytars, wash boards, cymbals and guitars.

Seth and the 23 Psaegz aren’t the most mainstream band, but given the chance, their music will blow your mind. I enjoyed the album the whole way through and recommend you give it a listen. These are the words that open up one of the greatest crossovers in video game history. “Kingdom Hearts” is a rated E for everyone action role-playing game published by Disney and Square Enix for the PlayStation 2 in 2002.

This game follows the story of a young boy named Sora. He and his two best friends, Riku and Kairi, have grown up on the paradise-like world of Destiny Islands, dreaming of seeing the outside world.

Their plan to use a raft is thwarted, however, when their home falls to darkness and they’re separated. Meanwhile, the king of Disney Castle has gone missing, leaving a letter to his court magician and the captain of the knights, instructing them to go to the world of Travers Town and to find the Key. I give the game play 4 out of 5 stars.

For the most part, the game was wonderful.

However, the camera controls were awk-

ward, and some levels had very slow parts.

I give the story 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The story was fun and engaging, but it was also geared towards a younger audience, so there were times when it was also very cheesy.

I give the character development 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is based solely on the characters that were made specifically for the game. Sora, while keeping his naive optimism that makes him who he is, becomes a lot stronger and even grows a little through the story. Riku, his best friend, made a lot of mistakes, deals with the consequences, learned from them, and did the right thing in the end. Kairi didn’t develop much at all through the game, keeping me from giving it a perfect score.

This game is only the first of a 9 part series. The games spanned from the PlayStation 2, Gameboy Advanced, PlayStation Portable, Web Browser, Nintendo DS and 3DS, and will soon be on the PlayStation 4 and XBox One. Annual fair continues to impress attendees The 158th annual Bloomsburg Fair started on Sept. 21 and ended one week later on Sept. 28. This year’s fair, as always, was full of good food, entertainment and fun.

For my family, going to the fair is a tradition because my birthday is almost always during fair week or immediately after, so it’s a mini-party.

I’ve learned a lot of things there – That you don’t always want the prize that comes with every game, that you shouldn’t impulse buy because the exact same thing is cheaper elsewhere, and that you never stick your finger in a turkey pen (Thanksgiving has been happily greeted ever since, out of some

sense of twisted vengeance).

Every year, I look forward to going, even with the rising admission prices, and I am never disappointed by it. The food is always mouthwatering, especially the pierogies. funnel cake and the hot apple cider.

While there is free entertainment, the main draw of the fair is the celebrity performers, where there is something for everyone. This year, performers included: Finger Eleven, Three Days Grace, Hunter Hayes, and Austin Mahone. I went to see country singer Justin Moore and his show was terrific. I sang myself hoarse and didn’t want it to end.

But since the concert was my splurge of the night, I hung around the exhibits and admired the skills of people much more talented than I. Local schools have their art classes

submit works for the exhibits, and it was amazing to see.

Somebody cut out mirror fragments and turned it into a zebra.

I loved it.

One of the most amazing things I saw was a mural painted on the side of the bathroom. It depicted the flooded fair grounds of 2011 in contrast to the packed scene of the year that followed. 2011 was the first year in the fair’s history that it was cancelled, because the damage of Hurricane Ivan and Tropical Storm Lee made it unsafe for patrons.

When everything was shutting down at 10 p.m, I didn’t want it to end at all. There was so much that I hadn’t seen and I was wandering around for six hours. But I consoled myself with the knowledge that it will Families enjoy themselves at the 158th annual return again next year.

Sex is an uncomfortable topic, but cannot be avoided. There are families who try to avoid the subject altogether while some dive in headfirst.

“I asked what ‘safe sex’ was when I was twelve as my parents were getting divorced,” said Jessica Dugan, a senior health science major. “They wanted to make sure there wasn’t any confusion in case I were to act out.”

Some parents have different techniques when it comes to ‘the talk’.

Dugan’s parents came prepared with a book. Tyreef Cash’s, a junior criminal justice major, parents just sat him down to talk about what they thought was important.

“She realized I was at a point where, eventually, I was going to start having a sex life and she knew she couldn’t stop it,” said Cash. “She would rather I be prepared when the time came.” Her words of advice were to “wear a condom every time.”

Safe sex education is important for every college student. College is a new playing field and it gives grounds for a lot of experimentation. Now we feel that we can make our own decisions and safe sex is one lesson that becomes most important now.

We’ve heard a million and one times why condoms are important. However guys aren’t the only ones who need to take prevention control.

Women need to be responsible and use protection as well. There are female condoms, the pill, and other methods of birth control that are effective.

These measures need to be taken on both sides in order to be 100 percent effective.

Student run organizations continue to promote this topic because just as Cash’s mother said, “no one can stop it from happening, but you can do it safely.”

RHA sponsors Sex Squares in the spring to educate students about sex in a fun and exciting environment. Residents halls across campus host events such as Condom Bingo to promote STD prevention. Glennon Health Center provides free condoms and informational pamphlets for all students.

Save money this semester & budget

Let’s face it, most of us will graduate with a handful of bills thanks to tuition costs. We need to build up our savings now before we have debt up to our eyeballs versus just our shoulders.

One mention of the word budget and most of us want to run. Limiting the number of trips we make to the Hanger every weekend or late night drive-thrus seems impossible.

According to a few Lock Haven students, consumption is the biggest thing students spend money on. Dining out, daily treats, and the alcohol no under-ager admits to buying, can dent our wallets.

Each time you get your venti chia tea latte at Starbucks, you give up over $4, and that’s one of the cheaper drinks. If you’re a dedicated customer you probably end up spending over $20 each week.

A few trips to Bentley and most students want other options.

Venturing off in search of edible food can cost quite a bit depending on your taste pallet.

An obvious answer to cutting these bills would be to stop. Stop wasting your time in Starbucks and take three minutes to make your own coffee.

Don’t go off campus to eat when your parents bought you a meal plan.

Though quitting our eating rituals may seem like an easy out, many students would be reluctant to give up their habits. For those students, a budget is the best way to keep parents from flipping over another bill.

It’s easy to have a generalized idea of spending costs; big bills are hard to forget. It’s the small expenses that add up and empty bank accounts.

“There’s always those temptations of spending money to go eat or to a movie,” said Colleen Brinkman, a junior communication major. “Money is tight for most students, but all you want to do is spend.”

Keeping track of how much you spend each month, or each week for the more frugal spenders, will quickly show how much you’re wasting.

We need to prioritize. A little caffeine is needed when it comes to the 8 a.m. classes, but the daily coffee trips are unnecessary.

Decide what you really want for the upcom-

ing month, and then say no to the rest.

Your college experience will be no less exciting if you miss a new movie or skip a restaurant.

Another obvious fix to the money problem is to get a job, if you weren’t forced to already.

Whether it is a part time spot at Ruby Tuesday or a work-study type thing at the library, any income is welcomed.

“I don’t have time for a job” won’t mean anything to the banks when your account is empty.

If you’re desperate for money, you’re desperate for a job. Even something once a week is better than nothing.

Every student can understand the annoyance a necessary budget brings.

A few adjustments will lessen the strain on your wallet, even if it adds problems when deciding what to buy.

But hey, that’s life.

“Being in college really showed me how to manage my money,” said Kayla Quinn, a senior recreational management major. “Realizing how to budget myself for tuition, sorority dues, and other bills made me feel more prepared for the future.”

Students color themselves for cause

Color runs are increasing in popularity these days, with events such as The Color Run and Color Me Rad popping up all over the country.

These types of runs are 5ks with proceeds benefiting a charity or organization.

The Color Run came to PennState University’s Beaver Stadium on Sunday Sept., 29 with over 10,000 runners in attendance.

Although the event benefitted PennState’s homecoming the event was open to the public and attracted many Lock Haven University Students.

Runners wear white and as they run through the course get doused in varying colors.

The color is dyed food grade corn starch and 100% natural. Runners are given a packet of color in their registration packet for the ‘Finishing Festival’.

The end result is the runner being completely covered in rainbow powder accompanied by a smile on their face. The race culminates into a huge dance party with a d.j, competitions, and even more color.

“It was so much fun dancing and throwing color on everyone at the end,” said Carly Manganello, sophomore early childhood education major.

So many people take part in The Color Run because it is much more laid back than most 5ks. Although there is an official start, finishing times aren’t kept and participants are encouraged to run or walk at their own pace and have fun.

“This was more exciting and less stressful than a normal 5k,” said Manganello.

‘Color stations’, where runners are doused in a specific color, are placed at every kilometer of

the race. Volunteers create a tunnel for runners and completely cover each participant that comes by.

“I looked forward to the next station of colors, it made running go by so much faster,” said Megan Dunn, sophomore special education major.

Since the run promotes happiness and having a good time, many teams dress up in themed outfits or costumes. Colorful wigs, tutus, and unicorn masks were all seen at Sunday’s race adding to the excitement and fun of the event.

The race is also unique in that it does not have an age limit. Whole families are encouraged to participate in the craziness.

“I saw a lot of mom’s pushing babies in strollers and had them covered in color,” said Dunn.

The run started at four on Sunday evening, but by the time all waves of runners began it was well after five. Some people were overwhelmed by the large crowds of runners, but most thought it added to the fun.

“There were a ton of people but it was still really awesome and a great experience,” said Samantha Armstrong, junior communication major.

The Color Run gained a lot of popularity through people sharing pictures of their post race looks on websites such as Tumblr. A lot of the online images show people covered head to toe in bright colors. While runners were covered they didn’t all achieve the look they were going for.

“Instead of looking cute and colorful at the end we looked like monsters,” said Manganello, “but it was still a memorable experience with some of my best friends.”

Spoiled statesmen settle on shutdown

Last year, the company I worked for furloughed a number of dedicated and long-serving employees. They budgeted beyond what they made and exhausted a number of cost-saving alternatives before having to let those people go. Many of them were the sole-provider of certain services. Over time, those of us who were left took on some of their responsibilities, adjusting to the changes.

It wasn’t easy, but we did it.

And we did it without interrupting service to our customers. Granted, being able to buy a flannel shirt or order wool socks probably isn’t going to make or break someone’s life, we still found it important to do the job customers were paying us for. We still managed to work around our problem, come up with new solutions and get back on the upswing.

As we are all now aware, the same cannot be said of our govern-

ment. Apparently comprised of a bunch of unruly, spoiled two-yearolds, our lawmakers can’t seem to come to some sort of compromise or form some sort of plan that could have saved the jobs of government employees and maintained continuing operation of “non-essential” government services.

That’s a pretty subjective thing, the idea of non-essential. For example, many social programs face a cease of funding during a shutdown.

One of them is the government’s Women, Children and Infants program (WIC) which helps low-income families provide healthy food for children. While it has some funds to sustain it for a time, a longer government shutdown would imperil many Americans who count on the extra help. I’d say feeding children is pretty essential; the government doesn’t agree.

I’d also say the ability to employ people is pretty crucial, especially given the state of the economy, the poverty crisis and high unemployment rates. Another service that abruptly ceases during shutdown is

GOVERNMENT ON

E-Verify, which allows employers to check on the citizenship status of applicants. So we’re now threatening the welfare of children and keeping Americans from getting jobs.

It gets better. All of our national parks and monuments are closed. No one is available to take any healthcare related calls (a little suspicious that the government shut down the same day the new healthcare marketplace opened). Some civil trials are put on hold indefinitely.

For once, I’m actually glad that the US Postal Service is privately funded, because they’d probably try to take that away from us too.

And let’s be glad we don’t live in DC, the only city in the country whose “non-essential” services must shut down with the government. The mayor has wisely declared all city services essential this time around and has earmarked money enough to sustain some of these services for two weeks. But if the government hasn’t, shall we say, powered-on again by then services like trash collection will stop. Come on. That can’t even be sanitary. Common sense, people.

Above and beyond all of that, the whole thing is just petty. Children get punished when they can’t learn to compromise and play nice.

Meanwhile, we pay our government to serve us and they choose to do so by ousting employees and halting services for citizens.

I can’t even begin to imagine how it looks to the rest of the world. I’d be laughing at us right now. We can’t compromise on simple issues. We can’t keep our government running. We’re terrible financial managers. Basically, we are the laughingstock of planet Earth.

Congratulations. Go ‘merica.

It’s time for our politicians to grow up. This is not an acceptable way to serve the people. You want money to fund healthcare? Take it from the war on drugs. Take it from whatever money we spend going into countries that don’t want us there, trying to “spread democracy”.

Point is, there are other options. In not finding a way to exercise a different choice, our government has failed us. We need to act to hold them responsible.

As college students, we face many challenges: waking up on time, meeting deadlines, all-night cramming sessions and the often problematic task of choosing a major. For some students, the determination of his or her major is a simple process. However for many students, finding a major that is right for them is often difficult. According to StageofLife.com, more than 50 percent of incoming freshmen are undecided majors. Does this sound like you? If so, don’t panic just yet.

Senior Kyle Harstead brings up a really good point for his their plans. I’ve learned that asking othpersonal pet peeve during class.

Harstead said, “It’s a pet peeve of mine to see students listening to their headphones during class. If you really don’t want to listen to the lecture, leave. It may not directly be annoying any students but for a professor to look out and see that I’m sure annoys them quite a bit.”

That is extremely annoying and disrespectful. The professor is trying to do their job and enlighten you to new ideas and information and you’re sitting there listening to the latest Miley Cyrus or Robin Thicke track. Meanwhile, your classmates have to compete with that garbage blaring out of your ears while trying to take good notes.

Sara Fisher, another junior at Lock Haven said, “When students’ alarm clocks on their phones go off, it’s really annoying.”

As a victim of that very situation, I have to say while I could see how it’s annoying, sometimes people forget to turn off their alarms and they really don’t mean to. However, as I said before, I can see how it would be annoying.

So if you fall under any of these categories or perhaps another one that is equally annoying, please, reevaluate your behavior and you’ll tend to ruffle a lot less feathers.

6. Does it feel like work to you? (When something doesn’t feel like work, that’s a pretty good sign you’ve found your answer.)

Of course, these questions are only the beginning to finding your calling in life. It is important to take advantage of alternative options that are available on campus like majors fairs, job fairs or talking to your advisor. Your advisor will be able to provide you with information regarding how to choose a major and will provide you with input as to what he/she believes would be a good option for you.

If you change your major more than once, don’t panic. Most college students change their majors at least three times before making a final decision, so you aren’t the only one.

Above all the rest, you need to be happy with your decision, regardless of what everyone else thinks. Follow your heart and it will never steer you wrong.

As my grandfather always said to me: “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Find what you love and pursue it.

The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (2-5) was shutout 2-0 today in non-conference action by visiting Cedarville (5-1-2).

After a scoreless first half, the Yellow Jackets scored two second half goals to earn the road-win.

Zack Gatlin put Cedarville up 1-0 in the 58th minute and the Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 in the 66th on a goal by Jeremy Hoppe.

Lock Haven goalie Jonathan Howitt (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post East) made six saves to keep Lock Haven in the game.

Matthew Coleman (Brownstown, Pa./Conestoga Valley) turned in a workmanlike effort today for The Haven doing everything he could to spark the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at home vs. Gannon.

Athletic training: more than meets the eye When you think about trainers in sports, what immediately comes to mind are the personal trainers found at a gym or fitness center.

Lock Haven ATS’s have played sports at some level and want to continue to be involved.

“I was not sure what I wanted to do,” Cross said, “But I was leaning toward something on the sports related side.”

Another senior ATS had a similar comment. “ I have played sports all of my life and still wanted to be a part of sports,” said Mark Zielen.

ATS’ may not be on the team, but they are critical to its success.

If you talk to any of the athletic training students (ATS) here at Lock Haven University you find a different meaning altogether.

One of them is senior Dave Cross. He feels many people do not know what athletic trainers do on a regular basis.

“For so long, coaches and athletes across all sports refer to athletic trainers as just trainers,” said Cross. “It is important to differentiate between the two. Athletic trainers are certified healthcare providers. Fitness trainers have no medical background and are usually just worried about your fitness.

“Personally, I think the word needs to be spread about the differences between the two,” said Cross.

Although athletic trainers are not athletes on the field, court or other setting, Cross and many

So do the students enrolled in Lock Haven’s athletic training program. They put in long hours but there seems to be a love for the profession.

“It is a lot of hard work and strenuous hours,” said Cross. “But it is worth it in the end to help athletes.”

“So far, the athletic training program has been long hours with various sports teams and vigorous work”, said senior ATS Dylan Bowersocks, “but it’s all worth it to me.”

Cross feels the athletic training program will help in his military work as well.

“Being an ATS has given me the confidence to know that in any given situation I can help prevent loss of life or limb,” said Cross. “Working with the football team and dealing with doing multiple treatments at once I feel gives me great skills to help assist in triage of injured soldiers as well.”

Now when someone calls for the trainer during a sporting event, a different picture should come to mind.

Forget the fitness trainer image, look at the athletic trainer - a healthcare professional, who is compassionate and committed to his/her profession, who has enrolled and graduated from a challenging and nationally certified program, your first responder for sports injuries.

Second year captain of the Lady Eagles Soccer team Morgan Rogers is constantly busy. She attends classes all day then a two hour practice and homework afterwards.

Rogers is majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. This semester she is taking four classes with one lab which is “the lightest semester so far,” states Rogers. “Normally on average would be five classes with three labs.”

Rogers is from Glenmoore, Pa. and chose Lock Haven because of the biology and soccer programs. While her parents are in the medical field, she plans on being a vet. She has rescued

several animals already.

How does she manage it all and not let it interfere with soccer?

“Morgan separates the two extremely well,” said head coach Lynnette Reitz. “For the three years I’ve been around Morgan, she never lets her school work impact her performance on the field.”

Rogers is a key factor for the Lady Eagles, not only being a captain but leader of the defense. She started all 16 games last season. Rogers, number 10, has started the past six games and is eager for the rest of the season.

It isn’t easy to manage it all but Rogers has a special quality about her where she’s a captain on and off the field.

“I’ve never seen a leader like Morgan before,” said Madison Taylor, a senior co-captain. “She has such a great way of talking with the girls.

In a way, that they respect her as a captain.”

Rogers focuses on what’s important to her. “I manage by just trying to stay on top of my work, not going out during the week, and attempting not to procrastinate,” Rogers, says giggles. “Even though that’s hard.”

She has a goal on and off the field; she wants to be a great captain for her teammates, win every game and perform at the best level. When she’s off the field she’s working hard so that she can become a vet and rescue animals.

When Rogers gets overwhelmed with having to keep up with soccer and her school work she takes a step back and remembers why she plays.

She plays because she loves the sport and without the sport life would be boring.

Crimson and white alumni meet goes swimmingly William Cawley Staff Writer wcawley@lhup.edu Lock Haven University hosted the 6th annual Crimson and White Alumni meet on Saturday.

Between the alumni and current team, every All-American in the program’s history was in the pool participating.

Some notable performances for the Lady Eagles included sophomore Danielle Parowski, who won the 100 and 500 yard free, and junior Carley Nitchie, who won the 50 free.

Junior Abby Miller won the 200 free, and junior Kayla Schnars won the 50 backstroke.

But swimming was only a small part of the meet. Laughs and memories were shared. It was a time to catch up with old friends before the season begins.

Alumni even swam with the current team

on some relays. In previous years, they were divided between alumni and students.

“It was nice to have a change from past alumni meets,” said alum Sarah Navaro, class of 2012. “We were actually included in the split between Crimson and White, so it was nice to be involved with the current team.”

Alum Samantha Derm, also class of 2012, said, “It was a lot of fun coming back and bonding with the new team.”

Derm and Navaro also noted they would return for next year’s alumni meet.

The future of the meet looks good, too, as freshman Megan Dunn, sophomore Emily Shultz, and junior Laura Stephens all plan to swim for the alumni once they graduate.

“It’s always a really fun time,” said Stephens.

The first meet the Lady Eagles have to begin the 2013 season will be on Oct. 19 at East Stroudsburg.

Three yards never seemed so meaningful until now. 108 inches never seemed so vital.

“You must focus on the task at hand,” said senior star running back Brandon Brader. “When you do just that you will help lead your team to a victory.”

Before Saturday’s 56-10 loss at Bloomsburg, Brader had 2,087 career rushing yards. He only needed 20 yards for the fourth sport on all-time rushing list at LH. Brader rushed for only 17 yards on eight carries. But the Bloomsburg defense did not stop the

versatile back on the receiving end, he hauled in a 73- yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Lock Haven, who now is 2-2, is a game away to witness history with their featured back.

“It feels great to be apart of history with a great friend and great teammate,” said Anthony Herko, a two time 2nd team All-PSAC offensive lineman. “It is an honor to block for a talented player such as Brader”.

Brader, who was a part of the 2008 Liberty High School AAA State Championship team always had the intention to be the best at his position.

“I came to Lock Haven to become the best player I could be. Whether that was being a lead blocker, or being a great run-

ning back. I came with the mindset to be great,” Brandon Brader explained about his goals before coming to Lock Haven.

Coach John Allen explains how the tireless off-seasons and the 6 a.m. practices factored into his star running back on the verge to make history.

“Brader is a tireless worker. He never gave up when things were looking rough. It shows a lot of heart and will power to spend summers training.

His statistics are a result of his work ethic.”

Brandon Brader’s expectations are not focused on his self but are to win more games as a team.

Lock Haven travels to Edinboro this Saturday and the star who wears No. 4 prepares to lock the No. 4 spot in school history.
