Returning comedy act puts focus on diversity issues Chris Gill Staff Writer cjg9698@lhup.edu

Diversity has become an ever expanding continuum of issues that individuals must confront in everyday society. Those issues include race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and more. confront. However an upcoming event at Lock Haven will offer students a chance to consider these issues in a less intense manner than they might otherwise be familiar with.

The event is called, “Stand Up For Diversity Comedy Night,” which will be held this Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in Price Auditorium.

“Overall it is a comedy night but I think it focuses on a lot of big issues that need to be brought up to the student body,”explained Kacie Shallow, coordinator for the Havens Activities Council. “But a lot of the time they don’t want to sit through an hour long

lecture. So this kind of has a little twist on it. You’re getting something out of it, but it’s also entertaining.”

The two comedians performing at the event are Arvin Mitchell and Gina Brillon. Mitchell made his comedic debut in 2003 on BET’s Coming to the Stage. Since then he has performed at universities across the nation. He has also had several television appearances on shows such as, Club Comic View and Spring Bling 21 Questions.

He is known for his clean style of comedy and for his hilarious impressions.

Brillon is a Bronx born Latina whose combination of femininity and fearlessness make for an in your face comedic style that is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. She is a regular performer in the New York Comedic scene.

She has performed at Carolines Comedy Club, the Laugh Factory, Stand up NY, The Comic Strip, and Gotham Comedy club. She has also had and television appearances on such shows as “Comedy Central’s Live at

Gotham.”

“We saw them both at the NACA showcase and they were absolutely hilarious, so we’re really looking forward to bringing them to campus,” explains Shallow.

The purpose of bringing these comedians to Lock Haven is more than just entertainment. The goal is to get students thinking about issues of diversity and open their eyes to the diverse world we live in.

“Each individual person has their own unique perspective, and I think it’s interesting to bring people to kind of open the discussion on campus.

So it’s not just a quiet thing. I think it’s important that we bring people who are going to jumpstart things and get people thinking,” Shallow said. “This is exactly what we are trying to do by bringing Stand Up For Diversity to our campus.”

So for those students who want to enjoy a comedic show that highlights diversity remember to check out the “Stand Up For Diversity Comedy Night” this Friday.

Group raises $400 in annual performance Gina Melasecca Staff Writer gmelasec@lhup.edu Lock Haven University’s GayStraight Alliance held a drag show last weekend to raise money and awareness for the GSA. The drag show is an annual event at LHU and the proceeds always go to charities. Last Friday, students and friends packed the multi-purpose room of the PUB for a unique type of entertainment.

GSA members dressed up in over-the-top costumes as their opposite sexes and performed singing, dancing, acting and more. Men wore dresses, wigs and lipstick, while women sported mustaches and ties.

“It is seen as a negative thing for men to possess feminine qualities,

or for women to possess masculine qualities,” said Megan Penny, GSA president. “So when given the chance, our community will take it over the top because we are in a space where we can take a stab at the types of viewpoints and boundaries that keep us being seen as different.”

GSA aims to have a positive presence on campus and make themselves known. Their goal is to educate and allow people to be who they are and be proud of it.

Last week was Ally Week which is a week-long event that encourages LGBTQ allies to become more educated on how they can help. GSA set up tables where they handed out event where students could make their own tie-dye shirts.

“As well as party hats, stickers, and condoms, we also made sure that

our information was available at this event. We’re planning on having another drag show in the spring semester and the charity and theme are yet to be decided,” said Penny.

GSA works hard to stop discrimination and judgment towards the LGBTQ community.

“There are very distinct lines drawn, and if you cross them, people act as though you’ve committed a crime, or you’re not living up to your expectations as a man or woman,” said Penny. “Gender is a social construct.

We’ve made these rules and guidelines ourselves, and made them so important that if someone doesn’t follow them they’re considered the freak.

In my opinion it’s freaky that people would get so angry over seeing a man in heels or a woman in men’s clothes.

No one is making them wear it, so why do they care?”

Sorority hosts annual charity event for women’s center Emilie Hettinger Guest Writer eah7805@lhup.edu When many people hear the phrase “Rock-A-Thon” they often think of music, but Alpha Sigma Tau’s “Rock-A-Thon” is all about rocking chairs, not music.

AST will hold its 30th annual “Rock-A-Thon” this Friday, Oct. 25 to Saturday, Oct. 26. The 24-hour event will take place at the bell tower corner from 5 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“I don’t remember winning because I was super nervous. They called my name and it was like it wasn’t real,” she said.

Both of them describe campaigning as a positive experience, especially with the other members of the court and meeting other students.

“We were supportive of each other. No matter what the outcome was, we just wanted to have fun together,” said Fish.

“Between campaigning with Wayne and getting to talk to people, it was the most fun I’ve had at homecoming.”

Fraser and Fish have known each other since their freshman year at Pocono Mountain East High School in 2006, and coincidently both chose LHU as their college for various rea-

sons.

“It reminded me of home and I really liked the Cadaver lab,” Fish explained. “It’s everything I’ve hoped and dreamed of.”

Both of them have become very involved during their time at the university, including becoming Resident Assistants.

Fraser was the RA for McEntire hall for one semester and North Hall for three more, while Fish has been the RA for Smith Hall for three semesters. Fish is also a student secretary in the StuThey graduate in the spring, after which Fraser will be applying to graduate schools.

“Homecoming was a fun experience and I’m glad I got to spend it with the people that I did,” Fish said.

“There are tons of clothes to choose from and a lot of variety,” Stroh said. “It’s a nice way to help students and make them look great.”

The career closet’s grand opening on Tuesday was successful and over 30 students came to pick out clothes.

Among them was Karlee McCloskey, a junior social work major.

“I heard about the career closet in class and decided to come and pick out something I could wear for job interviews and presentations,” McCloskey said.

Carrie bludgeons bullies in bloodbath Erika White Sports Editor ewhite@lhup.edu

For anyone who has ever been bullied the desire to seek revenge is not an uncommon feeling.

Now imagine having supernatural powers that can take revenge to the next level.

In the remake of one of the most popular works by Stephen King, “Carrie”, that is exactly what happens.

At the beginning of the film, Carrie White (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) is a shy, outcast with no one to turn to except her obsessively religious mother (played by Julianne Moore) who has done very little to prepare her for life as a high school student. Because of this, Carrie is mocked and ridiculed by popular students who go out of their way to make her life a living hell.

When things start looking up for Carrie, she ultimately finds herself the target of a cruel prank. However Carrie has a secret weapon to combat her enemies and exact her glorious vengeance.

Moore does an exceptional job of showing the side effects of when religious worship goes horribly wrong. Her extreme religious practices were disturbingly realistic and often times made the au-

dience cringe and sympathize with Carrie.

Moretz transformation from a meek and naïve schoolgirl to a blood soaked ruthless killer is what gives the film that edge over other modern day horror movies. Her performance as Carrie was so oddly compelling that the audience found themselves rooting for a psychopathic killer who was pushed too far.

For those who don’t particularly enjoy horror film, this is not your typical hack and slash movie. The suspense slowly eats away at the audience until the last 20 minutes when it becomes obvious that Carrie has gone past the point of no return.

Overall, the focus isn’t on the horror aspect; it’s on the horror of the theme, which is a terrifying reminder of the brutality of our society and how seemingly harmless taunting can have a severe emotional impact on the victim.

The modern update preserves some of the major themes of the first film adaptation while also adding new elements to storyline.

For it’s impeccable acting and realistic interpretation, with the added bonus of being much better than the Broadway adaptation, we give “Carrie” a four out of five stars.

Tips on how you can survive a horror movie

Kayla Marsh A&E Editor kmarsh2@lhup.edu All of us have seen horror movies. The outcome always seems the same. We constantly find ourselves yelling at the screen telling the protagonist that they are going to meet their end. We always hope that we would never end up in such terrible situations, but if you do here are some tips to help you survive an untimely end:

1.) See that creepy house on the hill that everyone talks about? Don’t go in.

Just let the mysterious stuff be mysterious. Go to McDonalds instead. Literally, do anything else.

2.) If you feel the need to go into said creepy house, take a weapon.

A weapon can consist of anything: a 2x4, a baseball bat, even a large rock would suffice.

3.) If you and your friends are in creepy murder house together, don’t split up.

“Strength in numbers.” Enough said.

4.) Did you hear that creepy noise upstairs in the room no one is allowed in? Nope. Me neither.

Don’t inspect the creepy noise. You’re not Sherlock Holmes. You don’t have to inspect things that could potentially do you harm. Just lay there, lock the door and pretend it didn’t happen.

5.) Dye your hair brown. The blondes always go first.

Statistically, in horror movies, the blonde is always the killer’s first target.

Maybe her bright yellow hair is more distinguishable in the dark than a brunette? But whatever it is about blondes, they never seem to last long in scheme of the movie.

6.) If you’re in the creepy house and it’s dark, turn the lights on.

Apparently only the killers have night vision. Find anything to shed some light on the situation: a flashlight, a light switch, even a small contained torch. Hell, light the house on fire! Just don’t go into that business blind.

So in conclusion, if it looks dangerous, it is. Don’t put yourself into situations where you are obviously at some kind of disadvantage. If the house is creepy, avoid it. If there’s a creepy noise, avoid it. If you listen to these tips there is no reason why you should die an untimely death at the hands of a creepy, possessed serial killer.

“Help… Find me…”

These three chilling words open “Misao”, a free to play Horror Adventure game. “Misao” covers some very sensitive topics, giving it its nature of a Horror game. It is aimed at people who are 15 years of age or older.

The game takes place in a Japanese high school and introduces us to all of the key players almost instantly. Aki, our main character, hears a voice in her dream calling out to her for help. She speculates that the voice belongs to a former classmate named Misao who had went missing three months before the game’s start.

Aki hears the voice yet again just after class and blacks out. She later wakes up in the

Student Council room only to find that the school has been placed under a curse and pulled into the ghost world. The only way to break the curse is to find Misao and save her while trying to avoid every rogue spirit that wants to kill you.

I give the game play four out of five stars.

The main function of the game is to solve puzzles.

However one or two of the puzzles are nearly impossible to solve. For most, you just had to inspect everything in your surroundings (and hope it didn’t kill you in the process. Most of it did, trust me). But there was one puzzle where I had to suck up my pride and look up the answer online.

I give the story 4.5 stars out of five. The story, started out a little slow but it picked up and was phenomenal. There were plenty of twists and turns to the mystery of Misao’s disappearance. You have entirely no idea what happened to her until you’ve already beaten the game and watch the last cut scene. This game also handled the sensitive content

in it at such a mature way that it didn’t turn me off of the game where most would. The story doesn’t end with just the first player either. If you make the right choices in the main portion of the game, another option opens up called Truth where you learn even more about the story.

I give the character development 4.5 stars out of five. All of the key characters in the game grew as the game went on, even those who died. All of them, that is, except for the main character, Aki. Aki started out strong and friendly. She started out wanting to be everyone’s friend and wanting to do the right thing and her personality did not change from the beginning to end.

with Kathleen Ellison I’m sure you faithful readers of the Eagle Eye remember my article from last semester about the top five most traumatizing kids’ movies. Well topping that list is the 1990 movie “The Witches” which absolutely terrified me as a child. Consequently, I felt I should review it for this festive fall month.

“The Witches” is directed by Nicolas Roeg and stars Anjelica Huston, Mai Zetterling and Jasen Fisher.

A recently orphaned boy named Luke (Fisher) is taken in by his grandmother (Zetterling). While staying at a hotel in England he stumbles upon a group of witches who have gathered to formulate a plot to rid the world of children. It is up to Luke to save the world from the witches, especially The Grand High Witch (Huston) who’s turned him into a mouse!

This movie is actually based on a children’s book by Roald Dahl, the same man who wrote “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James and the Giant Peach”. The book is, not surprisingly, often the target of censorship.

Subsequently, the plot has a whimsical taste to it with underlying grim notes of darkness much like

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “James in the Giant Peach”. Similarly it also contains spectacular special effects. The scene in which the witches reveal their true form is terrifying and impressive. The make-up is simply grotesque.

Huston wears the role of The High Witch like a well-tailored cocktail dress, infusing the part with cruel elegance and a convincing accent.

Even while looking like a pox-faced goblin dragged through the pits of hell, she conveys a sense of supremacy and power.

Though Luke spends most of his time as a mouse he still manages to portray a character that has that youthful innocence and bravery that permeates Dahl’s works. The brightness of his character alleviates some the darker aspects of the movie such as the horrible witches and the even more horrible fates of some of the children (such as being trapped in a painting).

This movie is a Halloween treat that is just brimful of emotional childhood trauma. Though it’s hardly scary for me now, it’s still an amazing piece of spooky art.

Top FIve manipulative movie villains Spencer McCoy Staff Writer smccoy@lhup.edu A villain is a big name to hold up. To be a villain one must be crazy enough to go to any extreme of revenge or hatred towards their opponent. But also, one must have the ability to suppress it all and manipulate other characters in a movie to make them believe you are just as normal as anybody else. This is a top five list of who I believe to be the most important villain movies to date.

5: Syndrome (“The Incredibles” 2004) Syndrome from the “Incredibles” is number five because he fits the roll of the young child who looked up to the heroes of his world but was rejected by them. If you have ever seen the “Incredibles” you would know that after being shunned by the heroes he sought revenge for the rest of his life to prove to them that he can have powers too. Deep down he only wanted to be accepted but used his abilities for the wrong reasons.

4: Norman Bates (“Psycho” 1960) Norman Bates from “Psycho” falls into its rightful place as number four. Norman had serious psychological issues that at one point in the movie you realize are beyond normal. When you first meet him you are instantly set with an uneasy feeling about him. Norman was set up as a clear villain from the start and his role in the movie was iconic. He deserves a spot on the list without a doubt because he showed a real life connection to people unchecked with mental issues as extreme as his can escalate to.

2: Gollum (“Lord of the Rings”) Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings” had to be on the list. He was insanely manipulative to Frodo and the gang to the point that he even had me as a viewer thinking that maybe if he had the ring back his life would be better. He was a character that JRR Tolkien perfectly designed. He made him into this greedy hobbit that at the end of the trilogy didn’t even resemble a hobbit at all. The obsessive, manipulative mind the ring inflicted on Gollum makes him number two.

3: Hannibal (“Silence of the Lambs” 1991) Hannibal Lecter from “Silence of the Lambs” gives a whole new definition to creepy. Hannibal was a ridiculously intelligent villain that gave the detectives from the movie a run for their money. Hannibal was a cannibal that had all of his actions perfectly planned out. What made him so scary was that he was so good at what he did it made me think that someone like him could actually be out there.

Hannibal makes number three because of his crazy cannibalistic ways make me grateful I never have to come encounter with someone like that.

1: Darth Vader (Star Wars) Darth Vader from the Star Wars Saga makes number one in shining colors. He is the ultimate villain. He features every aspect of a developing villain such as anger, hatred, pain, and revenge that transformed him into the convicted ruthless person he was. He became the perfect villain over a long period of time. What makes him so incredible is the fact that he could have been saved. Throughout his younger years he had a mind torn in two. He was lied to and led astray by an evil ruler who transformed him into who he was today.

Blink-182 looking for a new label Zachary Estright Staff Writer zestrigh@lhup.edu The recently independent band Blink-182 is currently looking for a new label during their new tour to help organize their recording process to produce new music. Before writing their recent EP Dogs Eating Dogs, the band members decided that they were going independent. Since Dogs Eating Dogs was just a small project, the boys want to bring in a label to work with them to help their management skills.

“We know we need a group (working with us), to have some accountability because God knows we’re not very good at managing large projects,” said lead guitarist, Tom DeLonge.

The band felt the need to leave their old label, “Interscope Records”, in order to communicate more efficiently as a band.

“This is awesome! We make a decision and it can happen tomorrow!” said bass player, Mark Hoppus said.

Their first project as an independent band was the EP “Dogs Eat-

ing Dogs”, and the band members got to control when they released the music.

They were able to sit down in the same room and write their songs at their own pace.

The boys currently just ended their tour on Sept. 22, 2013 and have hit the recording room to begin writing for their new project. The band has plans of producing an album for 2014.

The band consists of Tom DeLonge, lead guitarist of the band and lead vocalist. Mark Hoppus who is the bass player and lead vocalist. And Travis Barker who plays the drums.

Blink-182 formed in 1992 and broke up in 2005.

They got back together in 2008 and did a reunion tour in 2009. They started out with punk rock roots and later changed to alternative rock.

“I really like Blink-182, and the fact they are willing to be on their own makes me want to listen to their music even more because it’s going to be something they want to do,” said Thad O’shea, a sophomore secondary English education major. “I cannot wait to hear new music from them.”

For those of you that have left getting your Halloween costume until the last minute, here are the Do’s and Don’ts of Halloween costumes for this season:

Do be creative

is very overdone. Cady Heron said in Mean Girls, “Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total sl*t and no other girls can say anything about it.” She was very wrong. People will say something and it attracts negative attention towards yourself. Avoid this terrible cliché and be a little more original.

Do be funny

Creative costumes usually generate the most talk at Halloween parties. These also tend to be good conversation starters. However, they are very uncommon which is a real shame. Some fun creative examples are a loofa, your favorite beverage or a ketchup bottle. Come up with a fun idea and become the star of the party.

There are never enough of these costumes.

You can definitely never go wrong with an appropriately funny costume. Try and stay away from the crude humor costumes and stray towards funny costumes such as a serial killer with a knife and wearing a large Frosted Flakes cereal box. These costumes make people laugh and automatically feel more comfortable around you.

Students seek love in winter months 10

As winter slowly creeps its way onto campus the need to be warm comes with it. Sure you could jump under the covers, or hover next to a heating source, but why do it alone?

“Cuff Season” or “Cuffing Season” starts around late September and ends around March when the weather changes to spring.

“It’s a time people start looking for someone to cuddle with to stay warm during the winter,” said freshman, Markita Sims.

Sims, a Criminal Justice major, describes the time spent as a “human hibernation” period. While cuffing season may suggest that you are in relationship with a person, this isn’t always the case. Actually that type of thinking is one of the no-no’s when taking part in this seasonal occurrence.

“You need to make your intentions clear going into it,” Bailey said.

While some consider cuffing season to be a great way to stay warm and not be alone in the winter, it has developed a bad reputation over the years.

“Never again,” said senior Communications major, Tyrone Smith.

Smith also a previous cuff season participant says he will never take part in this yearly occurrence again. “It’s just too much emotional stress.”

“It’s so stupid,” said Sims. While it last for a six month span “cuffing season” tends to develop false relationships, and hurt feelings at its conclusions. “Honestly it is a waste of time.”

While the winter continues to cast its icy shadow over the university, the feeling to stay warm becomes even more important. But before you commit to a relationship be aware that it is “Cuffing Season.”

Students will have an opportunity to tour haunted properties in town with a local paranormal scholar thanks to a fraternity on campus.

Lock Haven University’s history honors society Phi Alpha Theta is sponsoring a haunted tour of Lock Haven on Oct. 29. The tour is being led by Lock Haven historian and paranormal scholar Lou Bernard.

Bernard has been a paranormal investigator since 2007 and has been working professionally as a historian since 2006.

“The two are connected. Local history involves a lot of people from the past,” said Bernard, “and to really research a haunted location you need the history of it.”

Phi Alpha Theta is sponsoring the event to raise money for Ross Library’s Teen Paranormal Investigation Society. Teen

Paranormal is a newlyformed club for locals interested in learning more about the paranormal and the investigative process.

“The kids meet once a month at the library.” said Bernard “They gain practical experience learning scientific methods to investigate mysterious stuff such as ghosts, cryptozoology, UFOs, unexplained weather patterns.”

Lock Haven includes many haunted properties making it a hot destination for those seeking paranormal activity. According to Bernard several neighborhoods were built over graveyards and burial grounds making hauntings a regular occurrence. The tour is meant to inform attendees about Lock Haven’s haunted history but may be spooky to some.

“The reality of the stories shared on this tour may upset more sensitive souls,” said Elizabeth Shultz, Phi Alpha Theta president. “But mostly it will be fun to know which

houses in Lock Haven are genuinely occupied by nonhuman entities.”

Members of Phi Alpha Theta hope that their event draws the attention of LHU students interested learning more about the local haunted history.

“I’ve heard that Lock Haven is haunted so I think it will be interesting to see where some of these haunted souls spend their time,” said David Sheesley, a sophomore health and physical education major.

Lock Haven seems like any other small town but its haunted history paints a much more unique picture.

Anonymous account tweets “LHUprobz”

“Getting on the trolley is honestly like getting on a lifeboat on the Titanic.”

This is a tweet from LHUprobz, a twitter account that shares funny, relatable tweets for LHU students. With over 1,300 followers, LHUprobz has been active for almost two years.

The account is run by anonymous users who said, “We are pretty sure not a lot of people know who we are besides our close friends, but half the fun is not revealing ourselves.”

The tweets you can expect to see involve every day occurrences among LHU students that the general university population would understand.

“I usually notice funny things about parties, the campus food, the campus cops, and anything else that’s like an inside joke to the student community,” said LHU student Tara Gingery.

The users interact with other people on twitter by retweeting and following them.

“Over 1,000 students follow the page and even those who do not use Twitter have at least

heard of it,” Mark Zielen, LHU student, said. “Tons of people talk and joke about it. It’s fairly interactive; it follows students and retweets them so it will continue to grow.”

The anonymous users will be graduating soon, so a lot of followers are wondering if the account will still exist.

“I hope the account is updated after whoever is behind it graduates. As a senior, I look forward to graduating and still being able to see how campus is from the views of current students,” said Zielen.

The anonymous users said they will pass the account on to someone so it keeps going.

“We actually want to hold a tweet-off and see which tweet we think is best. The password will be sent to the winner so they can take over,” they said.

With more followers every day and campuswide inside jokes, LHUprobz is becoming increasingly popular.

“We find ourselves hilarious,” they said.

“We hope everyone else finds us just as funny.”

A Lock Haven student will share her Kenyan culture on Oct. 26 at Avenue 209 Coffeehouse.

Avenue 209 is again hosting Culture Through Coffee, an event that allows international students to share information about their home country and culture in an informal setting. Culture Through Coffee is sponsored by the Institute for International Studies and mixes music and food into a fun and memorable evening.

On Friday, Matilda Mwanki, a sophomore physics major, will talk about her home country, Kenya.

“Its a time to share cultures, traditions, food and great coffee in a great location,” said Brennan Register, a sophomore mathematics major.

Mwanki is from Molo, Kenya, a more rural town which is about eight hours away from Nairobi, the capital city.

Mwanki has been at LHU for about 10 months now and is excited to share her Kenyan culture with other students. Mwanki will be discussing the geography, people, food, up-

bringing of children, language and attractions of Kenya.

Traditional food will be prepared and attendees can experience traditional music.

“There will be a mixture of all Kenyan music,” said Mwanki. “I guarantee the music will be entertaining with loads of African beats.”

A site causing sore eyes

It feels like every time I turn around, someone is taking something that was working just fine and revamping it to make it “better”. Now, I love innovation. It’s great that I don’t have to carry around an 80s-sized cell phone and that my car gets more than 13 miles to the gallon. I’m all about ease of access and efficiency. But these “improvements” almost always take steps backwards.

I can live with Facebook’s nonsense; I don’t have to use it if I really don’t want to. It is, in fact, possible to do what one does on Facebook via other routes. What I’m finding both infuriating and handicapping is the new website for Lock Haven University.

Just accessing the homepage is enough to deter any student from attempting to navigate the new site.

It’s hard to adjust to a new format for doing something. We’ve all been in the position of getting ourselves lost trying to use a new version of a

web browser, Netflix, the new iOS, etc. You don’t simply change the way something works without telling users. The revised format is an immediate put-off.

For anyone willing to overlook the stunningly changed style, the challenge of finding whatever information one needs presents itself. Unless you can psychically divine the exact term or category the information you want would be called or classified under, you really don’t stand a chance.

Maybe my brain operates on a totally different wavelength from the rest of humanity, but I am totally dumbfounded by the system they’re employing on the new site.

Even if you can find what you’re looking for, don’t plan on gaining access to the important tidbit you need. If you’re looking for a specific email address, name or other factoid, chances are you’ll come close and be thwarted.

For example, let’s say you want to utilize our university’s fine writing center, but you don’t have the time to meet with one of the masterful tutors face-to-face. You know they

accept papers via email, so you trot on over to the university website confident that such important contact information would be prominently displayed. When you get there, you find that you have to know to hover over “students”, select “academic development” from the drop-down menu, select “tutoring services” from a sidebar, click “writing center” and finally click “online tutoring” to come to anything relevant to your query.

While tired from your long journey to get to this page, you enthusiastically click “online tutoring” at the bottom, the hyperlink that’s supposed to enable online submission of a draft. You expect an automatic form to pop up or at least an email address.

Instead, the link opens your computer’s email service (such a Microsoft Outlook on computers using Windows) and prompts you to set it up.

If you’re anything like me, this is the point where you would give up.

Something that should have been simple has presented nothing but a maze of absurd games and run-arounds.

You’re deterred from using an essential service and you get a bad grade

all because LHU felt it necessary to change something.

That might be a bit of an exaggeration. Regardless, the situation is irksome and completely unnecessary. If something’s not broken, don’t fix it. Facebook can at least blame its updates on attempts to gather more users and up their revenue from advertisers. Last time I checked, LHU wasn’t using it’s homepage to gather anyone except prospective students, who are sure to be unimpressed by a site that looks like it was conceived and developed by middle school kids.

If the image presented on our website reflected the truth, we would be a disgrace to higher education. As it stands, the homepage is disorganized, messy and an inaccurate representation of the bureaucracy and systems at play on campus. I appreciate a timely assessment of the services being offered to students, but to my knowledge there wasn’t a sudden uprising of complaints about the old page. There’s value in the tried and true and it would behoove our university to remember such.

L essons present in our past

Suppose time travel was possible; would you partake? We have all heard the question: if we could go back in time and only meet one person who would it be? Recently, I found myself thinking about that very question after hearing it being asked in my college surroundings. If I could meet anyone back in time, I would choose Amelia Earhart.

The story of Amelia Earhart is often forgotten by most people today. However, the mystery has only just begun. Earhart, a famous female pilot of the 1920s was known for her courage, determination and her uncanny flying abilities. In 1937, Earhart began one of the longest and most dangerous flights of her career. She was determined to do it successfully. However, due to navigational errors as well as running low on fuel, she and her co-pilot Fred Noonan disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in July, 1937 and no traces of them or their wreckage has ever been found.

Since I was young, I have been infatuated with the life, legacy and disappearance of Amelia Earhart. She was an innovator and her story inspires me. From taking books out of the public library, watching documentaries and videos and even conceiving my own theories as to what may have happened, my study has been ceaseless.

Some of the questions I would ask Earhart would include the following: How did you develop an attraction to flying when it was a male-dominated field? How difficult was it to keep up while being an underdog? Did you ever question your dreams for seeming impossible?

Based on my own research, I like to think that Earhart realized she was not going to make it to her intended destination on the tiny island of Howland, so she landed the plane on an island which is now known as Saipan. Saipan was controlled by the Japanese from 1914-1944, which includes the time when Earhart vanished. There have been many eyewitness accounts of people from the island of Saipan that have claimed to see Earhart and Noonan on the island around the time of their disappearance.

I believe Earhart and Noonan may have been held hostage by the Japanese, who likely had thoughts of them being spies for the U.S government. Perhaps they were later executed and buried somewhere on the island.

Earhart’s plane was reportedly discovered in 1944 by U.S. marines who kept it guarded as well as documented with both photo and text from the body of the plane. In weeks following, the plane was mysteriously destroyed by the U.S. government for reasons that are still unknown to this day.

While the ability to go back in time would be a wonderful and exciting phenomenon that may one day be possible due to advances in technology, what we learn from the past is far more valuable.

Still, it is conceivable through our imaginations, which is often enough. Earhart had a dream that went against society. She taught us to never give up on the impossible because that is what keeps our dreams afloat. “The most effective way to do it, is to do it.”—Amelia Earhart

You know what really ruffles my feathers?

Ineffective communication.

Whether it’s because a person is shy or shady, it happens all the time. One person makes an advance to initiate conversation and receives the cold shoulder.

I’m not saying that everyone does it, but the majority of people in our generation (millennial) would rather not have face-to-face interactions and are not easily approachable. That is merely my opinion, but I think that most will agree with me; being social is difficult in today’s society.

I asked a few students here on campus their thoughts on the issue and here’s what they had to say:

“Technology is taking away from face-to-face interaction and people are becoming uncomfortable with talking in person,” said Miranda Edler, a freshman.

“I think it’s annoying because people seem to find it easier to text than to talk,” said Kelob Herman, a freshman.

Similarities? Perhaps, technology? I sit here and think about how communication has changed and all arrows point to the change in technology as having a direct correlation with it. I believe that emailing, texting, snapchatting or whatever has changed the way we as human beings communicate.

Before, in order to make friends, you had to physically go and do it. Now with the internet and texting, you can make a friend before you even know what they look like. One might see it as a deeper way of getting to know somebody for the person that they are; I see it as having hundreds of “friends” who aren’t real friends to you.

On the flip side, there are some upsides to the new wave of communicating. People can now talk at any and all times of the day, no matter what their schedule is. I also think it gives us more opportunity to communicate with someone whenever we want, which helps us practice the way we deliver messages. Paula Curtis, a senior, believes the millennial generation is not bad at communicating for exactly this reason.

“I don’t know that I think it’s necessarily lacking, especially in the college setting. I actually think this generation communicates very well,” Curtis said. “In some sense I think that social networking causes people to communicate with existing connections, but I see how it could hinder making new ones.”

No matter how you do it, right or wrong, face-to-face or online, communicating is important. When you do it, please make sure you’re trying to be good at it. Otherwise, you’re bound to ruffle some feathers.

In the original work by Ben Franklin, “Information to Those Who Would Remove to America” the reader is informed that America is not all it was cracked up to be in England at the time. People had the delusion that America was a land of riches, where people could go and get rich quick without much effort. In reality, America was a “land of labor.” People could get by and do very well, but they had to work and they were unlikely to get rich. I find a parallel to this in our modern America, which prompted the following parody—stylistic of the past with the present in mind:

Many Persons in College, either directly or by Facebook posts, have expressed to the Writer of this Article, Who is well acquainted with Reality, the Desire to transport themselves to the Real World; but who appear to have formed, thro’ Ignorance and inexplicable Self-Confidence, mistaken Ideas of what it is they will obtain after Graduation.

It is widely believed that the Inhabitants of the Real World are rich, capable of rewarding and frequently reward anything vaguely resembling Ingenuity; that while most people have to work full 12-Hour Days and become Experts in their Fields before attaining any Recognition or Wealth, that those same people are eager to give high-level Positions to College Graduates simply because they have a Lot of Self-Confidence and are “fast Learners”

(although they have not proved it by actually learning).

The Truth is that while most people in the Real World are not as poor as the miserable College Student, there are still very few who are rich. It is really more of a happy Medium. Most people have a Job of some sort and work about eight Hours a day but put in very little Effort, and as a Result, are less than optimal Workers.

They are thus fairly compensated: they are not fired, nor are they promoted.

America is not a Land where anyone cares about your false Images of yourself as something inherently great. They do not ask What is he? but What can he do?

Therefore, those people who rely on the Notion that they are gifted or exceptional in any Way not exclusively concerning Work or Knowledge will find a hard Time establishing themselves in easy Offices with donothing Jobs.

Those College Students in Fear of removing to the Real World, who now realize that they will need some more Collateral than Self-Esteem, can still gather and preserve a meaningful Future. It is yet possible to study, to learn, and to give up the Notion of the Self in exchange for the Ability to transform into Something better. Self-Confidence, paired with actual, meaningful Knowledge, is highly valuable.

Self-Confidence without said Knowledge is simply Arrogance, and there are few Job Postings that request that attribute in potential Employees.

Aches. Pains. Hard Practices. An athlete’s automatic go to is pain reducer pills.

However, do you know what this is doing to your body?

“In surveys,” Gretchen Reynolds author of For Athletes, Risk From Ibuprofen Use said “up to 70 percent of endurance athletes report that they down pills before every workout or competition.”

Brittany Whitmer, a mutli on the LHU track teams said she “takes four to six ibuprofen right before [her] events.”

“Athletes don’t even know what they are taking and why,” states Dr. Yvette Ingram, athletic trainer at Lock Haven University. “They don’t follow the label on the back of the bottle.”

The label of a Kirkland Ibuprofen bottle with 200 milligram capsules directs consumers to take one pill every four to six hours. It also states that a person should not take more than six pills in 24 hours.

These pain reducers are to help decrease inflammation of muscles. However, they can lead to intestinal problems and possibly kidney damage.

“Many athletes don’t know that doctors recommend that these pain reducers shouldn’t be used during or before endurance sports,” said Ph. D. Nancy Brown biographer of Dangers of Pain Medication Use in Teen. “Studies show that athletes don’t get much benefit from taking ibupro-

fen during competition.”

Some athletes’ first thought process is to go right for the medication. However athletic trainers highly suggest to not consume any pills.

Pain is your body’s natural response to let you know that you are hurting. The key is to pinpoint where the pain is and what is causing it. Using ibuprofen is just numbing the pain which can lead to further injuries.

“I take four to five ibuprofen 30 minutes before my event,” said Megan Borigo, LHU mid-distance runner.

In a study done by Dr. Yvette Ingram she found that three percent of athletes take pain reducers once a day, 46 percent when they’re sick, 51 percent when they’re sore and 70 percent when they’re hurt.

Athletes need to educate themselves of the serious risk of taking more than the recommended dosage. Let your body cope the natural way and ask your athletic trainer what the best treatment is for you.

“There are many benefits to having coaches with this knowledge and experience,” Kaleb LeMaire, a sophomore, said. “They have connections with many different coaches around the country.

That statement seems to be the overall philosophy for Moore and his assistants, be the best you can be; be the best teammates to one another and you will be successful.

Change is often difficult for anyone. It can be especially difficult for athletes dealing with coaching changes.

Lock Haven wrestlers are not in totally new waters with their new head coach Scott Moore. Moore was an assistant coach with the program for the past few years.

However, there have still been changes in the program and new assistant coaches have been added.

“One of the most important changes is giving every wrestler attention,” sophomore wrestler RJ Brydon said. “That is one of the most important changes for me as

a wrestler.”

Every coach has a philosophy.

That philosophy is what makes a successful season.

“Coach Moore’s philosophy is to take kids who want to work hard and succeed and turn them into champions,” Brydon said. “No matter what it takes. The practices are tougher and that makes us more prepared for tough matches throughout the year.”

Moore also brought in two new assistant coaches. It seems they want to develop the total person, not just the athlete.

“They bring us a new look on how we treat our lives and wrestling,” freshman Mauro Correnti said. “They make us look at the team rather than the individual.

The Lady Eagles finished the 201213 season with an overall record of seven wins and 19 losses.

They will enter this season with a four-game losing streak dating back from last year.

Head Coach Jennifer Smith is looking to turn things around by getting a winning season and perhaps make it to the playoffs.

“We are playing a lot of good teams this year especially in a new division,” said Smith. “The one team I am looking forward to playing against is Millersville University because I played there and I was a coach there when I was in the

graduate program.”

Kelsey Ryan, a senior majoring in health and physical education, is looking for a great season since it will be her last one with the team.

“This year should definitely be a playoff year,” said Ryan. “And earn one of the top seeds in the PSAC tournament.”

Some fans thought that Ryan would return to the Haven next year as a graduate player, but she has other plans in mind.

“I think I’m just going to go right into teaching or coaching as soon as I graduate this year,” said Ryan.

Lock Haven Lady Eagles basketball will be traveling to the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University to have a scrimmage with the Lady Lions on Sunday Oct. 27.

The Lady Eagles will start their official season at the Thomas Fieldhouse against the University of Wilmington, Delaware on Saturday Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
