Report documents campus crime trends John Sosnowski Online Editor jsosnows@lhup.edu Public Safety released their 2013 Annual Security & Fire Safety Report on Oct. 1, which shows several rises and falls of crime on campus, including robbery and forcible sex offenses.

Published in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, also known as the Clery Act, the report publicizes the university police department’s crime statistics for the calendar year of 2012, comparing them with the previous two years.

The report also contains information on crime reporting, security information, safety policies and services available to crime victims, including sexual assault victims.

The 2012 crime statistics included two on-campus forcible sex offenses, equal to the previous year’s number and down from three in 2010. This is compared to three incidents of sexual assault appearing in Public Safety’s weekly police reports published in the Eagle Eye so far in 2013.

One robbery was reported in 2012, the only one in the report’s three year scope. Ten burglary incidents were reported, down from 12 in 2011 and 22 in 2010.

There were four arrests and 12 judicial referrals for drug violations on-campus in 2012, up from six and 10, respectively, in 2011.

Arrests and judicial referrals for alcohol violations however, were down from 2011. The 2012 year saw 44 ar-

rests and 20 judicial referrals for alcohol violations, while 2011 saw 55 and 27, respectively. No crimes have been reported to law enforcement on Lock Haven University’s Clearfield campus between 2010 and 2012.

The report stresses the importance of the campus community’s participation in keeping the university safe.

A message within the report from the Director of Public Safety states that officers will “introduce new programs to engage the community in collective problem identification and identifying solutions.”

The report discusses the criteria and protocols for Timely Warnings and states that they are considered on the basis of factors such as “the nature of the crime, the continuing danger to the campus community, and the possible risk of compromising law enforcement efforts.”

The report asks that all crimes be reported to the public safety department immediately. It also states that crimes may be reported to Campus Security Authorities (CSAs).

CSAs are defined as “university faculty, staff or students that hold a position with the university designating them as CSAs.” CSAs are trained to report crimes in a manner compliant with the Clery Act and can record incidents for compilation in the annual crime statistics “even if the reporting party or victim wishes to remain anonymous” according to the report.

Public safety also offers confidential reporting via an online form for crime victims who do not wish to pursue recourse through the legal system or university.

Students fundraising for winter break trip Chris Gill Staff Writer cjg9698@lhup.edu

Students who want to travel abroad, but find they cannot commit a whole semester should look toward Lock Haven’s latest course, Spec 335. The course, Comparative Special Education, allows students to travel to the Dominican Republic and take part in special education classes.

“It is a three credit course and basically we’re going to be comparing special education as it is offered in the Dominican to special education as it is offered in the United States,” explained Dr. Jane Penman, Chairperson of the Department of Special Education.

There are no prerequisites for this course, but it is more focused on students going into the education field.

The students who are going on the trip are meeting informally this semester. However the course trip will actually take place during the semester break from Jan. 4-14.

The purpose of the students meeting this semester is to plan the trip, familiarize themselves with the culture of the Dominican Republic, and organize fundraising.

“Part of our meeting this semester is for travel preparations.

We’re planning for fundraising and for the outreach projects that we will be doing in the Dominican,” said Penman.

Students will be staying in a rather impoverished area of the Dominican Republic, Cabon, and will do the majority of their teaching in a school sponsored by the organization A.C.E.S., Advancing Communities by Education Services.

They will also be spending some time in a more affluent area of the Dominican, Las Terrenas, in order to give them some comparative perspective.

“We will be in a very poor section of the Dominican, in Cabon, in a school that is sponsored

by A.C.E.S. We’re partnering with them and they actually fund the school where we’ll be doing most of our participating,” Penman explained.

“We’ll also be visiting a school in Las Terrenas, which is on the north coast of the Dominican, and we’ll be able to compare the A.C.E.S. school in Cabon to the one in Las Terrenas,” Penman added.

The students are currently fundraising for their trip, but not to cover the personal expenses of the trip. They are looking to raise money in order to help with the

“We’ve started out by asking for donations from faculty and staff. The students are also going to be doing a basket drawing and doing some canning out on the corner during homecoming when we have high traffic through the area,” Penman said. “We’re going to be doing a Krispy Krème donut sale. They have a lot of ideas, but we want to take one fundraiser at a time.”

The hope for this program is that it is able to generate interest in the student body, as well as establish a relationship with A.C.E.S. and the Dominican Schools.

“They’re very excited for us to go there. They don’t really have a special education program per say, so they’re looking for some of our expertise to help them to develop more specialized programs for working with students with disabilities. I hope that it is something that we can continue,” said Penman.

Anyone who has a strong desire to study abroad but finds it difficult because the rigid structure of their program, should look into this course and the unique chance it offers.

How has breast cancer affected you?

“I think that it’s important that we recognize it, being that I’m a female and it hits women a little harder.

I don’t really have anyone that I know of that is affected by it. It is definitely not something you want to experience yourself,” - Brittany Ferrizzi, a junior sports administration major.

‘Once Upon a Time’ sails back to its roots Kayla Marsh A&E Editor kmarsh2@lhup.edu

ABC’s Once Upon a Time is back for season three in full force. In the season premiere, we find our heroes and villains aboard the Jolly Roger on the way to Neverland. The sailing seemed to be smooth until the main characters start fighting. As their emotions raged, so did the storm.

It was Emma who finally realized what their fighting was doing and threw herself overboard to bring the group back together. After being rescued by her parents, The Evil Queen and Captain Hook, Emma declares herself the leader of the group. The Jolly Roger finally delivers them to the shores of Neverland in hopes of finding Henry before it’s too late.

Last week’s episode revolved around the groups’ continuing journey to find Henry. Peter Pan shows up and gives Emma a map and tells her it will help her find Henry. The catch? It will only show Henry’s location when Emma admits who she truly is.

After a botched spell and a run

in with the Lost Boys, Emma finally admits that she feels lost. She never quite forgave her parents for giving her up and she still feels like an abandoned orphan.

Just like the Lost Boys on the island, Emma feels as lost and alone as they do.

With a map finally showing the way, the gang finally has a way to locate Henry.

Season three seems to be getting back to the core of what Once Upon a Time fans fell in love with in the first season. Season two introduced too many new characters and seemed to throw the main characters to the wayside.

This season has all of our favorite characters marooned on an island together and bringing up past issues that weren’t touched upon in earlier seasons.

Season three is already utilizing the amazing chemistry between the main cast of characters.

The writers are digging deeper into the storylines of Snow White, Prince Charming, Regina, Rumpelstiltskin, and Emma. Once Upon a Time is going back to it roots, focusing on the chemistry of the core cast and creating new and exciting adventures for our rag tag gang of misfits to go on.

We fans couldn’t be happier.

It’s finally that time of year again. The time when leaves begin to change colors, the weather begins to cool down and pumpkin is the best selling flavor at any coffee shop. Another thing that comes to everyones’ mind during the month of October is a holiday that people completely immerse themselves in: Halloween.

Every year, exclusively during the month of October, Food Network hosts a show known as Halloween Wars. Each season begins with only five teams, one eliminated at the conclusion of each episode.

The teams are comprised of three members: a pumpkin carver, a cake decorator and a sugar artist.

The judges decide a theme for their pieces; ‘Clowns’, ‘What’s Hiding under the Bed?’ and ‘Zombie Prom’ are a few interesting topics from the past. Together, they work to build a master-

piece that is a combination of the three mediums during a set amount of time. The prize if they are the last team standing? $50,000.

The skill and creativity of the contenders are what make me a loyal viewer. Every year I look forward to seeing what incredible structures they will create. On the premiere (which aired Sunday, Oct. 6) one team made a life size structure of two people, one a zombie and one a human girl. The story behind it revealed that the prom queen’s boyfriend had died three weeks prior, and she discovered a potion that would bring him back to life as a zombie.

Around these life sized characters was a frame made of bones, each bone carved out of pumpkin. All of this was achieved in six hours.

If you can find a television on Sunday night and you love Halloween as much as I do, you should check out Halloween Wars.

You’ll be disgusted, intrigued and completely blown away by the works of art you are exposed to. Happy October! (Halloween Wars airs every Sunday night during Oct. at 9p.m.)

with Kathleen Ellison I don’t watch a lot of vampire movies except for maybe “Dracula”. Today’s media has been overdosed with the bloodsuckers so much that I admit I’m more than a little disgusted by the once intimidating monster.

Regardless, I always try to give movies and books a taste before I judge, and when I watched this vampire cult film I was smitten. Based on a novel by the same name, “The Hunger” is a 1983 movie directed by Tony Scott and starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon.

Miriam Blaylock (Deneuve) is an ancient vampire, who lives with her lover, John (Bowie), in New York. They pose as a wealthy couple who teach classical music. Their happiness begins to disintegrate though when John begins to suffer from insomnia and starts to age rapidly.

In desperation he goes to seek help from Dr. Sarah Roberts (Sarandon) who specializes in rapid aging. His plan backfires though when Miriam starts to fall in love with Sarah.

This cult masterpiece explores not only the idea of supernatural vampires, but emotional vampires and how a bad relationship can suck the life out

of you (pun intended). The ending was a bit disappointing (it’s actually very different from the original intended ending, which I prefer), but the overall plot of the film is simple and elegant. It manages to easily entrap the senses with its vampiric charms.

Deneuve and Bowie are flawless in their portrayal of ancient vampires, showing both elegance and a coldness that entices and enchants.

Bowie’s frantic desperation is fascinating to watch; especially in contrast to Deneuve’s dependence on her lovers and how that manifests in her interactions with Sarandon’s character.

The movie contains stunning visuals accompanied by a gorgeous soundtrack. The film is very slow paced and devoid of passion (despite some risqué scenes between Sarandon and Denevue) and has an overall chilled tone. This can border on boring at times, but in its entirety provides a piece of haunting work that sticks within your mind.

This intriguing and dark movie is a must for your Halloween movie list.

Supernatural tidbits, adequate gore and a ghostly tone make this a movie perfect for spooky October nights.

‘The Walking Dead’ premieres this Sunday so get psyched!

Fall is here! The leaves are changing colors, pumpkinflavored everything is sold everywhere, Halloween is approaching, and The Walking Dead’s fourth season begins on Oct. 13.

Fans of the hit show religiously flock to their televisions every Sunday night at 9 p.m. to watch their favorite characters grow, fight, and survive in arguably the worst circumstances imagined: a zombie infestation.

According to series creator Robert Kirkman, this upcoming season proves to be his favorite season yet. If that hasn’t got you pumped up then you must not yet be a fan of “The Walking Dead.”

The first three seasons are available to stream on Netflix and AMC is running a “The Walking Dead” marathon to prepare viewers for the roller coaster that awaits them.

“The Walking Dead” season premiere will begin approximately six months after the last season left off. (Spoiler alert) Important questions will be answered, twisted and built upon and characters will evolve more as the season goes on.

Avenue 209’s music competition ‘Rocks the Haven’ this weekend Spencer McCoy Staff Writer smccoy@lhup.edu The annual Rock the Haven is going into its 4th year at Avenue 209. The competition has brought light to many local artists that may not have had their break into the music scene yet.

Rock the Haven starts on Oct. 10 and continues qualification rounds and eliminations on the 17th, 24th, and 31st.

Students from the campus also get the chance to finally show attendees of the show what they’re really made of.

The contest consists of three judges that either advance contestants through to the next round or are the bearers of bad news and say “no”.

If you have seen American Idol you can expect the same thing, only on a more local scale with less drama and

lights. The event always draws a big crowd making the atmosphere of the coffee shop come to life.

Arrive 20 minutes before the show starts. Chairs are limited and people watching may be forced to stand.

Last year there was well over 50 people in attendance.

Rock the Haven has been a big part of Lock Haven for the past four years and this year should be no different.

There are over 15 contestants this year, and several are LHU students.

Musicians will be bringing everything they have got to prove to the audience and the judges that they can be the winner of Rock the Haven.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at Avenue 209 and will go on until 9 p.m.

Fan favorite ruffian Daryl Dixon is dealing with the loss of his older brother Merle and has a hinted at romance with the motherly Carol.

Young couple Glen and Maggie will continue to prove that love conquers all even in the darkest of times.

It may come as a surprise, but the main focus of a TV show in a zombie infested world is not the zombies, but humanity.

Last season’s slogan, “Fight the dead, fear the living” emphasized this point and highlights that the horrors may have destroyed the humanity in some and tested the resolve in others.

Don’t expect to get in contact with a Walking Dead fan this Sunday at 9 p.m.

Tour benefits local cemetery

Students looking to learn about local history with a spooky twist are in luck.

The Highland Cemetery is hosting a lantern tour of their cemetery on October 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. Located behind Bentley Hall, the Highland Cemetery has been the final resting place of Lock Haven residents since 1863.

Currently, Highland is a nonprofit Volunteer-Run Cemetery Company. To keep the 50 acres of cemetery looking good President Dave Wallace depends on donations and volunteers.

The lantern tour is a fundraiser aimed at entertaining and informing students and residents about Lock Haven history. Volunteers dress up as historical figures and explain a brief history of their character in a natural setting.

“We like to keep the atmosphere as natural as possible. We use candles, lanterns and moonlight to illuminate our speakers and visitors,” said Kyle Caldwell, an outdoor recreation management major who is also interning at the Highland Cemetery.

The tours last approximately two hours depending on the size of the group and the tour guide. Those attending are encouraged to wear supportive shoes and be prepared for a strenuous uphill walk through the cemetery.

Although it is hosted in a cemetery at night, it is not meant to be scary. It is meant to tell Lock Haven’s history. Some of those buried in the cemetery that will be discussed are the first mayor of Lock Haven and multiple Civil War veterans.

“This is a family friendly event,” said Caldwell, “we encourage everyone to come out and discover what makes Lock Haven important.”

Phobias plague students Gina Melasecca Staff Writer gmelasec@lhup.edu What differentiates a fear from a phobia?

A phobia is an extremely exaggerated and persistent fear of a particular object, activity or situation. They often prevent people from doing certain things and affect their daily lives.

Beth Sunderlin is a senior at LHU with a phobia of cotton. “When I touch it or see it, I immediately feel ill and physically disgusted. I am limited with clothing and can only wear certain things. I avoid soft blankets and stuffed animals,” she said.

Sunderlin cannot recall a particular experience in her early childhood that caused this irrational fear. Dr. Cheryl Newburg, psychology professor at LHU, says, “Some phobias appear to come out of nowhere. Some are common and may be based on an evolutionary preparedness, like fear of snakes or spiders.

“Phobias can be learned at an older age when something anxiety-producing occurs and the person learns to fear related situations or objects.”

The Eagle Eye interviewed 50 random students, and only six of them reported having a phobia. “It’s estimated that more than 12 percent of people

in the US will develop specific phobias at some point in their lives,” said Newburg.

Claustrophobia is a more common one and involves fear of small, enclosed spaces. Christine Nolthenius is an LHU student with claustrophobia, and her fear is specifically elevators.

“Not being able to take an elevator is annoying for other people and walking up the stairs every day is annoying. That’s the daily limitation. When I’m enclosed in a small area I start to get a panic attack,” said Nolthenius.

Phobias can develop at any age; for some it starts in the early years and for others it does not happen until adulthood.

“When I was younger I wouldn’t go down slides that had closed tops.

But I stopped taking elevators a few years ago because they stressed me out too much. I realized it was claustrophobia,” said Nolthenius.

When it comes to treating a phobia, there are several options that involve exposure. The person can choose to be gradually exposed to the object or situation, or they can try and face it all at once.

“There are various types of treatment, but exposure is the bottom line,” said Newburg. “People need to allow themselves to be exposed to what they fear so that they can reduce their anxiety and change their interpretations.

Avoiding the feared object does NOT help.”

Lock Haven Love tackles all grounds of relationships. Happy, healthy relationships, long distance relationships, and now this week, unhealthy relationships. While this is not an easy topic to address, it is a necessity.

This week Lock Haven Love got in touch with the H.O.P.E. Center on campus. The H.O.P.E. Center “creates a safe campus environment by supporting, empowering and enlightening all students, staff and faculty on issues of sex, gender, sexual violence, personal safety and well-being, social justice and educational equality,” Director and Advisory Board chair, Dr. Lisette Schillig said.

The H.O.P.E. Center provides students with a safe haven to collect information about sexual assault and relationship violence.

“We can put students in touch with resources both on campus and off that can assist; resources like LHU Counseling Services, the Clinton County Women’s Center, PASSAGES and Public Safety,” said Schillig.

The H.O.P.E. Center hosts events each school year to raise awareness on relationship and sexual violence.

“Two of our biggest yearly events are the Domestic Violence Awareness vigil in October, and the Take Back the Night event during the internationally recognized sexual assault awareness month of April,” said Schillig.

These books and movies portray different levels of unhealthy relationships. A healthy relationship can have some dependencies, however couples should never completely rely on one another.

If you see a friend or family member experiencing any of these relationships difficulties or if they come to you and need someone to talk to, listen.

“Sometimes it’s the very personal experiences we have that are difficult to tell others about, including loved ones and family members. But having a support system- an ally- is crucial” Schillig said.

Halloween brings with it some of the best things of the year: candy corn, haunted houses and costumes. One of the best things that Halloween brings is that it is the most socially acceptable time to scare someone, particularly your roommate. Here are some easy tricks to play on your roommate to celebrate the spooky season.

Trick number one, hide in the closet. This trick can be done two different ways. The first way is to hide in your roommate’s closet when they leave the room to go to the shower. When he/she comes back and open the closet door, they are going to find a huge surprise! When they open the closet either yell, scream or jump out. If you would like to put the extra effort into your scaring pick up a cheap mask from either Walmart or the Dollar Store.

The other way to do this trick is hide when your roommate is not in the room. Make sure you know when he/she will be back so that you’re not hiding for more than five minutes. When you hear your roommate come in the door, give them some time to get settled. Then start banging on the door. Make sure to just do a little tap a first, that way they are not sure if they really heard

something or not. Then the next sound hit the door of the closet very loud.

This will definitely scare your roommate. Make sure you wait at least a couple minutes in between knocks.

This next trick also involves some hiding. Take the remote to the TV and find a hiding place in your room from where you can easily change the channel from. (For the best results purchase a universal remote.) When your roommate comes back into the room start changing the channels if the TV is already on. Make sure you change it to the channels that are fuzzy. (Channel 62 is one of these channels if you live in any of the resident halls.) Continue until your roommate finds you or until he/she is freaking out.

Purchase a fake spider, snake or anything creepy of this sort. These items can be purchased very cheaply at any of the Dollar Stores in town. For the best results put it some place that you know for sure that him/her are going to see, such as under their blanket, dresser drawer or a desk drawer. Make sure to time it well, like before you go to bed or when your roommate is in the shower. The best part of scaring someone is getting to see their reaction so make sure you won’t miss it.

Remember in the words of Sheriff Leigh Brackett from “Halloween”, “It’s Halloween, everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”

A healthy dose of sick advice

At some point every week, I start thinking about what I’d like to write for you, the dedicated reader. Coming up with ideas is never hard; I’m pretty comfortable having opinions and self-righteously sounding off. However it can be a little tricky to narrow it down to something that is relevant and interesting.

My first idea this week was to talk about Felix Baumgartner, who jumped from about 24 miles over the Earth and became the first man to break the sound barrier without the aid of a vehicle. The anniversary of his awe-inspiring feat is coming up on Oct. 14. In addition to being a big Felix fan, that’s my birthday, so I naturally gravitated to him.

Then I found out that this week is National Newspapers Week. I think the easiest piece I could ever write would be one about the value of the Eagle Eye here on campus. It is an essential, informative publication with students’ needs and wants in mind. It is one of the few organizations on campus that I feel strives to deliver what students genuinely want. Of course, you know all of this. You’re already reading. You don’t need me to

convince you.

So, gentle readers, allow me to caress your eyes with this week’s topic—one so relevant it easily overshadowed the contenders. My admirable audience, say your thanks right now for the protection of the printed page between you all and my pearls of wisdom: I am sick.

That’s right. And no matter how much time I spent trying to start pieces about the importance of Felix’s achievements or how many reasons I came up with as to why our newspaper is just keen, I was stopped every dozen or so words coughing or having to blow my nose. I was consumed.

It’s a dilemma we’re all doomed to face at some point in our college careers. You’re fine one night, and wake up with a sore throat the next day that you pray is the result of some weird weather overnight—that kind that always makes your sinuses feel a bit wrong come morning. But as the day progresses, you just feel worse and worse.

Next thing you know, you’re trying to pick which classes you can and can’t miss, bummin’ around in your pajamas and swilling NyQuil like Homer Simpson drinks beer. All week I’ve been carrying a roll of toilet paper with me, lest I drown in my own snot.

ing this fate. Most of us are all too familiar with these steps, but as the woman with her head in the noose of illness, I feel compelled to remind you of them: wash your hands after you touch basically anything; take your vitamins, especially vitamin C; drink plenty of fluids; get enough sleep; make time to relax as stress plays a huge role in weakening the body’s immune system; cough and sneeze into your elbows to help prevent the spread of germs.

If and when you do get sick—and you will—don’t overexert yourself. Remember that your professors are people too and they’ll work with you if you become seriously ill. Generally, a relapsing illness is worse than it was the first time around. Finally, don’t forget about the infirmary, where they’ll give you that golden ticket—the note that says you’re too sick to be in class—and free medicine.

Writing about your thoughts on life and the world around you is also a great distraction from feeling icky. The most effective way to write towards better health is to do so in about 500 words and then send it to me. I also hear this makes a great substitute for a get-well card or a birthday present, say for your favorite sick and birthday-bound editor.

You know what really ruffles my feathers?

Bullying.

Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, “what are we, five?” Here’s the reality of the situation though: bullying happens all the time. Age doesn’t matter, location doesn’t matter and content certainly doesn’t matter.

I received an e-mail from a loyal reader who mentioned the idea to put bullies under this week’s microscope. Wish granted because I can’t stand them either.

You know what is ironic about that? We all do it. Yes, you heard me right you self-proclaimed saint, you’re guilty of it too. We’ve also all been victims of bullying.

“When I was six-years-old I was bullied because I did not have the Power Ranger action figures. The other kids refused to play with me because my action figures weren’t Power Rangers,” said Keith Mark, a freshman at LHU.

Mark had an impressionable young mind and personality at age six— everyone does. Imagine what that type of exclusion could have done to his mental well-being. To be rejected at such a young age can have devastating effects that lead to depression later in life.

“Kids in grade school would always make fun of me for being short,” Aaron Fleegle, a freshman at LHU said. “I was constantly reminded up until we graduated high school...and even now people pick on me for being short, I just take it in stride now.”

It doesn’t matter if it’s action figures, height, skin color, sexual orientation, whatever; bullying hurts everyone in different ways.

How do we stop it? It’s simple; all it takes is the ability to take a stand.

When you see somebody being bullied or you hear about somebody being bullied, don’t back down. Get involved, whether it’s directly or by getting the attention of somebody who can help. Sometimes all it takes is one voice to turn the tides and give the victim hope.

On the same token, when you catch yourself bullying somebody else, take a step back and really evaluate how your comments or actions might make them feel. Even if they aren’t outwardly expressing fear or sadness, that doesn’t mean that they don’t feel it and those feelings can sometimes push people to drastic lengths such as suicide. It’s important to remember that each person has feelings, thoughts and ideas that they value and every time you degrade them for those things, you’re bullying them. It’s as simple as that.

Every victim is loved by someone— a mother, a father, a brother, a sister, it doesn’t matter; they mean something to someone. So why would anyone want to ruin that? What gives somebody the right to push a person to the point of desperate action, no matter how trivial the topic may seem? Nothing. Everyone deserves to live their life the way they want so long as it doesn’t harm another human being.

So no matter the circumstance, remember that sometimes all it takes is one word: “stop.”

If there’s one thing that really ruffles my feathers, it’s bullying.

As Halloween is only a few weeks away, it has gotten me thinking about how retail stores begin selling holiday merchandise extremely early. Is this just me, or do stores need to cool it down with promoting holiday season themed merchandise? While most people are still enjoying the end of summer by vacationing, swimming and wearing flip flops, retail stores are prepping for holiday seasons.

Around the end of July, I casually walked into the Dollar Tree to find an entire section of their store dedicated to Halloween décor. I could not believe my eyes. There was a full Halloween section in the store right next to summer merchandise, which was conveniently marked down 50 percent.

In a few short weeks, just like clockwork other big retail stores such as Walmart and Big Lots put Christmas decorations on display. Soon after, their holiday commercials began promoting free layaway for the holiday season as well as showing this season’s most popular toys.

According to The Daily Press, roughly 40 percent of annual sales in most retail stores occur during the holiday season. With holiday sales accruing almost half of stores’ annual income, obviously it is important for the stores to promote their merchandise as early as possible in order to attract more customers. However, are stores really attracting more customers by early promotion or pushing them away?

Bri Lynn, a junior majoring in early childhood education said, “I believe I am neutral when it comes to [my] position regarding holiday themed merchandise. There are people who like to shop in advance with money they have saved up for the holidays. However, I can also understand that some people do not want to be bombarded with holiday themed merchandise when Halloween hasn’t happened yet.”

On the other hand, Holly Ray, a senior majoring in business said, “I really think it’s great. There are many people who must budget in order to provide a Christmas for their family. With stores promoting merchandise early, it gives many people an advantage to save some money.”

In my opinion, July is way too early to begin thinking about Halloween when I still have on shorts and flip flops. I can deal with displays of Christmas trees and Christmas music in November, but please no earlier. Retail stores, I understand the need to make money, but let’s face it: Americans have and always will fork out a lot of money for holiday themed merchandise. We just don’t want to when it’s still summer and 80 degrees outside.

The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (4-5-1) downed Molloy (1-9) 2-1 today in non-conference action.

Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Samantha Biondi (Hamilton, N.J./Mercer County Community College) half-volleyed home a cross from Taylor Schutte (Newton, N.J./Kittantiny Regional).

Molloy responded quickly, tying the game just 1:48 later on a goal by Jessica Malone. Malone knocked home her own rebound.

LHU answered again, however.

Sarah Bonelli (Apollo, Pa./Apollo-Ridge) cruised down the left side of the field and ripped a shot home from 25 yards out past the goalie with just 22 seconds left in the half.

Katie Eichman (McAlisterville, Pa./East Juniata) sealed the win for Lock Haven which converted a nice defensesplitting pass from Jamie Hunter (Marietta, Pa./Donegal).

Lock Haven goalie Michelle Cuomo (Schenectady, N.Y./ Herkimer) recorded four saves in her first start of the season.

Lock Haven returns to action on Friday, Oct. 11 when the Lady Eagles host California (Pa.) in conference play (5:00 p.m.).

The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (4-5) added another win to their two game win streak with a shutout against Chestnut Hill (5-4-2) in a nonconference match Tuesday (Oct. 8) night at Hubert Jack Stadium.

To start off the game, Head Coach for the Bald Eagles, Doug Moore made a surprising choice to start five freshmen in place of the more experienced players on his team.

It was a very surprising choice because this game was a muchneeded win.

“I made the move not to show any disrespect to the older players,” said Moore. “It was a nonconference game, and it gave the

other players a chance to play.

They looked fantastic.”

One player who looked great was freshman Tyler Weikert, scoring his first career goal to put the Bald Eagles on the board in the first half. The score set the Bald Eagles at ease. It definitely was a clutch goal from 25 yards out to get the score.

“It was amazing to score my first goal. We started off well and to have a shutout in this game was nice,” Weikert said.

Late in the second half, the game became increasingly aggressive with Chestnut Hill threatening to score in Lock Haven territory on several attempts.

Moore responded with a late substitution to get his starters the opportunity to increase the lead.

Jacob Oldaker, one of the key starters for Lock Haven, answered the call notching another goal on a penalty kick.

This goal would be the key score to confirm Lock Haven’s win over Chestnut Hill.

“Myself and a couple of the older guys came in with about 15 minutes left in the game,” said Oldaker. “We came on, brought the level of play up and I was lucky enough to get the penalty, which led to a great score for us.”

The Bald Eagles head into this weekend with two PSAC Western division games that include California Pa. (4-5-1) and Slippery Rock (7-1-1).

The Bald Eagles, who are looking to earn a spot in the postseason, understand just how important these two matches are to the future of their season.

“If we are going to make a statement it must be this weekend,” Coach Moore said. “We need to get points on the board and be effective.”

What were you doing eleven years ago? Were you watching the Patriots with their young quarterback, Tom Brady, win their first Super Bowl? Did you watch Carson Palmer win the Heisman trophy, or watch the second of the Harry Potter movies in theaters?

Eleven years ago, Lock Haven University Football had a three game winning streak at home. It hasn’t happened since.

Not until these past two seasons.

The Lock Haven football team will look to keep the streak alive this Saturday against Shippensburg, who is trying to stay unbeaten in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) east division.

With a win in the last home game against

Cheyney last season, along with wins against West Virginia State and Cheyney this season at home, Lock Haven finds themselves with that three win streak.

“It feels really good to have this home win streak going. It is also a great feeling to know that we are winning at home and giving our fans something to be proud of,” said senior running back Brandon Brader.

With the home win streak going, you might think the coaches would try to get the players a little more hyped than usual. That is not necessarily the case.

“The coaches do bring up the win streak a little, but really we are just taking it like every other game,” said senior wide receiver, Jesse Hoover. “We need to execute the game plan, and take it one play at a time. If we do that, we will extend the streak.”

Home wins are exciting. The roar of the crowd after a good play, their jeers as the opposing offense takes the field and the familiarity with the surroundings makes winning at home even more special.

You step onto the field. Your heart is pounding.

All you hear is LHU! LHU! The impact of fans on players is powerful.

“Especially if they’re rowdy fans. It usually pumps up the atmosphere of the game, ” said Sam Biondi, senior on the Lady Eagle’s soccer team.

Most players enjoy the reaction from their fans, either from cheering their names or yelling at the referee for an unfair call.

Negative impacts include causing players to feel nervous or pressured not to mess up. But, this comes with the love of the game. A player is not going to make every play perfectly.

Matt Coleman, senior captain of Lock Haven Men’s soccer team, said, “at this point in my career it gives me confidence to play better.”

“As a freshman it made me a little nervous, but being a senior there’s nothing I haven’t seen before so I embrace the fans.”

Most players don’t feel nervous in front of their fans. Jenna Felice, a sophomore on the Lady Eagles field hockey team said, “I personally love when fans come to support us at our games.”

Every player has a different outlook for their games, but when it comes down to playing they’re there to win.

“Playing in front of fans doesn’t really make me nervous,” Biondi said. “It makes me more excited to play knowing the support we have on the sidelines.”

While others, like Marc Olivo, senior football player said, “the fans don’t have a specific impact on me, unless someone special is in the stands.”

Each player always has a memorable moment, usually the crowd was there roaring in the background amplifying the game to a new level.

A specific game that really motivated the field hockey team was the opening game vs. UNC. “It was awesome to see the stands filled with fans,” said Felice. “It boosted my confidence to know that people all throughout Lock Haven came to watch us play.”

Whether or not the fans have a positive or negative impact, fans make the games come alive.

So LHU fans, come out and support your college teams.
