Fall semester brings new general education requirements Kate Hibbard News Editor khibbard@lhup.edu Most LHU students will be looking at revamped general education requirements next fall.

“The world is changing rapidly. The state of knowledge is changing rapidly,” said Donna Wilson, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.

“And the skills and knowledge students need to succeed in the 21st century are changing.”

The curriculum’s revisions include a new category called “Global Awareness and Citizenship” and, while two sciences will still be required, only one must be a lab science.

“I feel taking out the second lab science might hinder students coming in. They’re not getting the education they’re paying for,” Brad Parker, a senior majoring in recreation management, said. “They’re not getting a rounded education.”

“There was much that was good in the current curriculum and that remained through a rigorous faculty review,” said Provost Wilson.

“But there were also changes that the faculty believe will stand students in better stead to solve problems and create opportunities in the 21st century.”

While it is not a graduation requirement for all majors, it is a good way for communication majors to get publications which are necessary for their senior portfolios.

Event educates students about culture through caffeine Students will have the opportunity to learn about one of LHU’s study abroad program in Finland or about the culture in a relaxed setting during the Culture through Coffee event in Avenue 209 on March 7 at 6 p.m.

“It encourages students to study abroad because the information is given to them in a casual and comfortable environment with friends instead of having somebody stand a podium in a lecture hall,” said Rosana Campbell, Director of the Institute for International Studies.

The event started as part of an Americorp volunteer’s need to start a program as a project, but it quickly grew to become a regular occurrence that took place two or three times a semester to inform students of their study abroad options and give

the community members a chance to explore the world from the comfort of their town.

Though Finland is the culture being highlighted this month, it is only one of 30 programs that LHU offers abroad.

“Studying abroad is the best thing I have ever done in college. It made me gain independence and think differently than I normally would because I was in a different culture,” said Melissa Weaver, a junior majoring in sociology.

Overall I think “Satellite Flight” was great. The album being released with no publicity was a great idea on Cudi’s part. It was a great way for Cudi to announce “Man on the Moon III”.

“Man on the Moon III” is hopefully going to live up to the hype it’s slowly building. But “Satellite Flight” is a nice reassurance that it will be very grown up compared to the last two Man on the Moon’s. I think the album is really a sort of love or hate thing. If you are into the kind of music that talks about a journey than “Satellite Flight” is a good place to start.

“Sherlock’s Last Case” is about Sherlock Holmes retuning from an encounter with Professor James Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls.

Upon his return he receives a letter from the supposed son of his arch nemesis. Holmes must then try to survive the start of a series of antics, and his last great adventure ensues.

Lead actors of the production are Dusty Guerra as Sherlock Holmes, Gavin D’Ulisse as Dr. Watson, Tyler Noll as Inspector Lestrade, Kristin Healy as Mrs. Hudson, and also a completely student run produc-

tion directed by Cassandra Irvin, a third year student.

When asked about why she chose this production in particular Irvin said, “I chose to do this show because I love Sherlock Holmes and this script gave a new perspective of some of the characters. This new perspective really opened my eyes to the characters I thought I knew, and I wanted to share that experience with others.”

Student run productions are put on every semester and the tickets for the show are free.

Uh Huh Her Uh Huh Her is a band that seems to be in it’s own genre. Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey started the band in 2007 and have been generating a solid, underground following ever since. Cam’s voice is different from anything heard on modern pop radio, and Leisha does a great job with her contribution of electropop keyboards to back her up. These girls are becoming more popular as the years go on, so we can only hope for the best from these talented musicians. Songs to get you hooked: “Human Nature” and “Not a Love Song”.

You play like a girl!

Erika White Sports Editor ewhite@lhup.edu I recently ran into a friend last week who was on her way to Thomas Field House to see a basketball game.

“Oh, are you going to the girls’ game?” I asked. It was no later than 5 p.m. so the game was just getting underway.

“Yeah, but only because I’m trying to get good seats for the boys game,” she replied.

While I sit here and write this, my mind is currently sifting through the hundreds of games that I have

played throughout my athletic career, trying to pinpoint one game that was actually supported by someone other than parents. It’s like that conversative for me because I can’t seem to think of one game, nor do I remember seeing anyone else on the bleachers.

Looking back at it now, it was actually quite humiliating.

As a society, we’re so consumed with events such as the Super Bowl, March Madness and the World Series that we don’t even realize that women are rarely represented in some of the biggest sports moments of the year. It’s a frustrating thought.

Comics represent freedom. In my own collection, and many others I have seen, the comics question the nature of freedom and the role of good I also love that comics have many explosions and hero battles in major cities. Recently, I’ve started to come across more and more people starting to get interested in comics.

With major movies and games hitting the shelves over the past several years, there’s been a major shows are being made from comics and vice versa.

It makes sense because, like in shows and movies, comics can create spin-off characters. happening anymore is unacceptable. the PUB pays their staff to do the jobs that they are assigned, not to clean up after grown adults. Will they do it if a mess is left? Yes, but that doesn’t mean that they want to or should behind. Do accidents happen and are people forgetful? Yes, but it is becoming a little more regular than it should be.

Can you tell this one hits close to home for me?

Honestly, it is crazy to think that adults can be so careless. It’s a simple concept: if you create garbage during your stay in the PUB, pick it up. I get so sick and tired of cleaning up after people, some of them my own friends. hind for somebody else to clean up, get ready to be thoroughly

MARCH MADNESS PREVIEW:

LONGHORNS, WILDCATS & CYCLONES Chris Fravel Staff Writer cfravel@lhup.edu This week in the March Madness Preview we’re going over the Texas Longhorns, Kentucky Wildcats, and the Iowa State Cyclones, all teams that I believe could make the NCAA tournament. Analysis of Texas and Iowa State are courtesy of Kyle Harstead, senior at LHU.

Texas Longhorns:

They score 76.9 points per game (50th) and grab 42 offensive rebounds per game (5th). They don’t spread the ball around much only averaging 12.3 assists per making their shots 43.7 percent of the time (220th).

Their defense has some work to do. They are giving up 71.0 points per game (207th) and do not create many turnovers only averaging 6.2 steals per game (173rd).

They are, however, very strong underneath grabbing 27.4 defensive rebounds per game (12th) and averaging 6.1 blocks per game (13th) Because of their wins over some top teams, I look at them to come in as a 4-6 seed however I don’t see them making a deep run. It’s one of those teams with their round but most likely the second.

Kentucky Wildcats:

The Wildcats have three major offensive and three major defensive stats all in the top-100 of the NCAA. Kentucky is averaging 78.2 points per game (35th), 41.4 rebounds per game (6th) and are shooting 46.8% the Wildcats are holding opponents to 66.9 points per game (89th), snagging 26.9 rebounds per game (18th) and blocking 6.5 shots per game (5th).

If the Wildcats can win that game, they will streak into the SEC tournament and NCAA tournament with enough momentum to make some serious noise. I foresee Kentucky clawing their way through to the Sweet Sixteen, perhaps even the Elite Eight. This Wildcat squad has some serious potential, take them seriously when creating your March Madness brackets.

Iowa State Cyclones:

It is clear this team’s strength is on the offensive side of the ball ranking in the top 38 in four major offensive categories. They score 83.6 points per game (6th) while shooting 47.3 percent from the per game (25th) and are very good at spreading the ball around averaging 18.7 assists per game (1st).

However, it looks like a whole separate team when it comes to their defense. In 3 of the 4 main defensive categories, they rank no higher than 162nd.

If they can run the table in their last four games, I can see them coming in as a 3 or 4 seed. Because they beat the teams they need to beat while splitting with tough games, I fully believe this team can easily make a Sweet Sixteen run but I’m sure we will see them in the Elite 8.
