We are grateful to the many parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, faculty, and staff for the many ways they support the Norwood community and for the many gifts of time and treasure that strength our school.

At Norwood, belonging isn’t just a passive feeling; it’s something we build together through shared experiences, open-minded conversations, inclusive practices, and community support.

Dear Friends, When I first arrived at Norwood in the summer of 2014, I embarked on what I called a “listening tour.” This involved holding individual meetings with approximately 120 faculty and staff members to hear about their experiences and perspectives on our school.

This past summer, as I completed my tenth year, I decided it was time to launch a revival tour, and I once again spent one-on-one time with my wonderful colleagues, listening and learning firsthand from them.

One of the most moving aspects of my listening tour (both “eras”!) was hearing about the many ways in which our school fosters a sense of belonging for students and adults alike. From the daily interactions in classrooms and offices to the collaborative efforts in projects and initiatives, it is clear that our community is bound by a shared commitment to one another’s success and well-being.

interests, family members, pets, likes, and dislikes. In doing so, they build classroom communities where, as our founder Frances Marsh famously said, students leave at the end of the day eager to return in the morning.

Of course, this concept of belonging isn’t new to Norwood. In fact, our Be Known tagline emerged from focus group conversations held several years ago with former students, parents, trustees, and faculty. Time and again, our alumni families expressed how deeply they felt known at Norwood, emphasizing how teachers truly understood their children.

Be Known encapsulates this sentiment and reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every member of our community feels seen, valued, and understood.

For our students, a sense of belonging enhances their learning experience, making them feel secure and supported. It encourages them to take risks, ask questions, and fully participate in their educational journey. For our faculty and staff, it means being part of a nurturing environment where their contributions are recognized, they have the freedom to innovate and collaborate, and their professional growth is supported.

I am tremendously grateful for the insightful conversations I had with my Norwood colleagues during both listening tours.

These shared moments not only reaffirmed the incredible dedication and passion our faculty members bring to their work but also highlighted the profound sense of community and belonging that defines our school. While we may not always get it right, our unwavering commitment to building a welcoming and inclusive community is at the heart of our mission to inspire confident, compassionate, independent, and creative thinkers who embrace lifelong learning.

So, how do we create and sustain this feeling of belonging? I believe the answer to that question lies in our simple yet powerful tagline: Be Known. Across the School, our teachers work tirelessly to truly know their students, foster connections between them, and celebrate their differences. They take the time to learn about their students’ hobbies,

Playground Progress: We’re almost there!

For the past year, Norwood has been engaged in an exciting journey of planning, designing, constructing, transporting, and now installing the many features that will make up an incredible new playground and sports court.

As we approach the finish line, we are just weeks away from cutting the ribbon that stands between hundreds of eager students and the slides, swings, monkey bars, climbing structures, wobble boards, and the enormous and magnificent Blue Hawk that has landed in Norwood’s front yard. The new playground and sports court have been thoughtfully designed to cater to a wide range of interests, play styles, and developmental stages. These custom-built structures created by Earthscape Playgrounds in Ontario, Canada, are ADA accessible and highly interactive, fostering cooperative and social play, enhancing balance and coordination, and offering graduated challenges that help children assess and manage risk.

Trading Places Ringing in a New Chapter in Division Leadership The 2024-2025 school year began with a change in

leadership for both the Lower School and the Middle School. As announced by Matthew Gould last winter,

Head of Middle School Dennis Campbell concluded his three-year tenure in June 2024, prompting a search for a new middle school leader. As it turned out, the ideal

successor was found right next door in the Lower School.

With full support from the Board of Trustees, Matthew

appointed Mike Risen, head of lower school at the time and former director of curriculum and instruction, to

return to his middle school roots as Norwood’s fourth head of middle school since the division opened in

1998. Simultaneously, Fielding Winters, who had served

both divisions as director of curriculum and instruction, emerged as the natural choice for the new head of lower school. >>>

What were you most excited about as you started your new position?

MR: For much of my career, I have worked with middle school students, so I was excited about the opportunity to work with those ages again. Because I previously worked with the Middle School, I was also looking forward to the opportunity to work with the fabulous faculty in the division.

FW: I was so excited to get to know all the lower school

students and their families. It has been a few years since I worked exclusively in the Lower School as the math coordinator, during which time I knew all the students.

I loved that experience, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to return to it!

Can you share some of your immediate goals or priorities for your division?

MR: Some immediate goals are to increase transparency, grow accountability, and enhance communication. These are fundamental practices to any smoothly run school, and I want to ensure those are happening at a high level for the division. Of course, implementing the new cell phone policy along with some other pieces are priorities, too. A personal goal is to reconnect with the many students I had worked with in Lower School, as well as meet students who have joined the Norwood community in Middle School.

FW: I am focusing on how we continue to create a community of belonging for all our students and faculty.

Additionally, I am dedicated to supporting our new-toNorwood teachers. Mike left the division in great shape, and I aim to continue the momentum he started!

What has surprised you so far?

MR: I don’t think I’ve been surprised yet. It has been a

joy to reconnect with colleagues and students, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to support a great group of people. I have been thrilled with the warm reception I have received from everyone. The people have made it a very smooth transition.

FW: How delightful it has been to be embraced (sometimes literally!) by all the lower school students almost immediately. I guess shaking hands and leading chapel make a person an instant celebrity!

What do you see as the most significant challenges and opportunities in your new role?

MR: The biggest challenge really is me adjusting to the new role. Middle school students need different kinds of support than their younger peers, so revisiting those tools in my toolbox has taken some practice. The biggest opportunity is to help the division simply shine; the Middle School at Norwood is a true gem. The faculty is exemplary, and the students are committed to success

ABOUT FIELDING WINTERS Fielding has been at Norwood for 14 years, initially serving as a lower school teacher in various subject areas for 12 years. She was a science teacher in grades 1-4, a math teacher in grades 2-4, and a third grade homeroom teacher. In addition, as our lower school math coordinator for six years, Fielding worked with every lower school homeroom teacher in grades PK-4 to support math instruction. She was appointed director of curriculum and instruction in 2022. Additionally, Fielding has served on the Strategic Planning Committee, the Diversity Leadership Council, and the Lower School Guidance Group during COVID. Prior to Norwood, Fielding was the lead science teacher for grades K-4 at Green Acres School. In addition to two decades of experience teaching elementary grades, she was also an instructor at the University of Maryland. She holds a B.A. in history from Brown University and a B.S. in biology, an M.A. in educational measurement and statistics, and a Ph.D. in human development (specializing in educational psychology) from the University of Maryland. Fielding is the parent of two Norwood alumni (Oakley ’18 and Logan ’22).

and growth. I am confident that we have the right pieces in place to continue to provide outstanding academic, extracurricular, and social experiences for students.

FW: We are continually thinking about how we can truly “know” our students in order to meet their academic and social-emotional needs. While we excel in this area, we are always looking for ways to improve. I have a fabulous student support team and a tremendously hard-working and dedicated faculty, which makes this work incredibly rewarding.

What is your favorite part of the day?

MR: The start of the day. I’m a morning person who likes routine, so shaking hands and then holding chapel sets the right tone for my day.

FW: Shaking hands!

What’s your favorite birthday treat from students?

MR: All of them, but I do have a soft spot for Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

FW: Cupcakes!

(Re)Introducing Brittany Young, Norwood’s New Director of Curriculum and Instruction Brittany worked at Norwood from 2017 to 2021, initially as a fifth grade teacher for three years and then as the middle school learning specialist. We are delighted to welcome her back in this new role! Before Norwood, she served as an education specialist for grades 4-6 at an elementary school in West Covina, CA, and as a special education teacher and interim special education coordinator at LaSalle-Backus Educational Campus in Washington, D.C. She also taught middle school English and social studies within the District of Columbia Public Schools system. During the last four years, Brittany founded and directed the Youngheirz Genius School, a micro-school in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She currently co-owns and designs curriculum for a kids' cooking program, and she is the co-author of a children's book titled, My Oh My, I Can't Wait to Eat This Pie. She holds a B.A. from Howard University and an M.Ed. from George Washington University.

ABOUT MIKE RISEN Prior to leading Norwood’s Lower School from 2019 to 2024, Mike served as director of curriculum and instruction for six years, responsible for steering our curriculum in all grades and overseeing faculty professional development. Throughout his 11 years at Norwood, Mike has always had a foot in the middle school community—not only as the parent of two Norwood students (Catherine ’23 and Chickie ’26) but also as a seventhand eighth-grade history teacher for five years, as a longtime coach of the Norwood Debate Team, and as a member of the Principals Team, Admin Team, and Diversity Leadership Council. Before Norwood, Mike was the school director of LEAD Academy Public Charter Middle School in Nashville. Earlier in his career, he was a middle school English teacher and policy debate coach for four years at Montgomery Bell Academy, a leading independent school in Nashville, and prior to that, he taught English at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans. He holds a B.A. in English and philosophy from the College of William and Mary, and an M.Ed. in human development and counseling from Vanderbilt University.

A CONVERSATION WITH NORWOOD’S NEW BOARD CHAIR

Gabby Goddard, Ed.D.

Gabby Goddard has long believed in the power of education and has devoted her career and volunteer efforts to mission-oriented organizations that share that commitment. After working in the gun violence prevention movement, Gabby began her work in education as a public school teacher with Teach for America at a Title 1 dual language D.C. public school. To deepen her impact, she became assistant principal, overseeing a staff of more than 80 educators and leading the academic leadership, student wellness, and special education teams. Gabby saw firsthand the meaningful impact the Horizons Greater Washington program had on her own students and joined the Horizons board. A graduate of Kenyon College, she also holds a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University and recently completed her doctorate in education at Vanderbilt University. Gabby and her husband, Colin, are parents of daughters, Dana ’30, Fiona ’32, Joanie, and Stella. For the past four years, Gabby has been an active Norwood volunteer and joined the board in 2023. She is thrilled to embark on her new role as board chair, dedicated to advancing our school’s mission.

What inspired you to take on the role of board chair, and what are you most excited about as you settle into this new position?

When our oldest, Dana, started kindergarten at Norwood, I was asked to join one of the strategic plan working groups because of my background in education. Norwood’s strategic vision truly sets us apart as a leader in the independent school space, and my involvement in shaping this plan deepened my commitment to the School.

I love Norwood. It has been an incredible community for our family and a second home for our kids. I have been inspired by the unwavering strength, dedication, and commitment of the board members and the leadership team at Norwood.

Their collective passion and vision for the School have consistently driven its success and growth.

With an amazing team and excellent leadership and staff, I felt confident we could drive meaningful progress and ensure the continued success of the School.

What are your immediate priorities for the board and the School?

First and foremost, my biggest priority is to support Matthew and the board. We are so lucky to have such a profoundly committed school leader who has fostered a magical school experience for our children.

As a board, we must continue to achieve a balanced budget, which is possible with strong enrollment and staff retention. We also need to keep our eyes on our strategic plan while also looking at future trends to ensure we are thoughtfully planning for the long-term health of our school.

Given your experience as a school administrator with DCPS, your background as a teacher with Teach for America, your role as a board member for Horizons Greater Washington, and your advanced degree in education, how will you leverage these experiences to support and enhance your role as Norwood’s board chair?

I grew up attending independent schools and later had the opportunity to spend my career in a Title 1 public school in Washington, D.C., so I’ve had a lot of experience in different educational

settings. After college, I joined Teach for America, where I primarily worked with English language learners and students with disabilities. My work as a teacher has given me an understanding of the classroom environment and the needs of both students and teachers.

As an assistant principal and through my doctoral program, I gained valuable insight into the operational and strategic aspects of school leadership, which will be critical in ensuring effective governance.

I first learned of Horizons when I was a teacher in DCPS and my students attended the program during the summer. They would wear their Horizons t-shirts all year and share stories about the fantastic summer experience they were having—both academically and socialemotionally. I’ve seen firsthand the program’s impact. What I didn’t realize until serving on the Horizons and Norwood boards was Norwood’s deep commitment to the Horizons program. This is not just a summer program that uses Norwood space; it is an integral part of the School’s fabric.

Seeing over 100 Norwood families attend the Supply Drive was really inspiring—I loved seeing so many kids and families supporting such an important part of our school.

My past experiences have given me deep appreciation for the work Matthew and the Norwood staff do day in and out!

In your view, what are the greatest challenges currently facing our school?

Norwood teachers are the heartbeat of the School.

At the end of the day, nothing is more important in a school than the teacher standing in front of the children. We are so lucky to have the highest caliber of talented, dedicated, and caring teachers.

Like schools nationally, recruiting and retaining teachers is complex, and it is something we need to keep our eyes on.

One of the most significant challenges facing our school is maintaining an exceptional student experience while managing the financial pressures of controlling tuition and ensuring that we remain accessible to families. Balancing these priorities will require strategic planning and innovative solutions to continue offering the outstanding learning environment our community values.

Where do you see opportunities for Norwood to excel and innovate?

Norwood is a leader in the independent school space, and we continue to show families the real value of a PK-8 education.

I’m really excited about the environmental science focus we’ve included in our strategic plan. With Norwood’s incredible 40-acre campus, we have a unique opportunity to use the space more intentionally, allowing students to connect with the environment in meaningful ways. By encouraging students to take ownership of our outdoor spaces, we can foster a more profound sense of responsibility and stewardship while enriching their learning experiences through hands-on environmental education.

Is there a message you would like to share with the school community as we begin this new chapter together?

I feel so fortunate to be a Norwood parent and a member of this extraordinary school community.

Our incredible community of dedicated adults— teachers, staff members, administrators, and parents—ensures that our children are surrounded by so many people who love them and are invested in their success.

Finally, what factors influenced your family’s decision to choose Norwood for your children?

We chose Norwood for our children because we wanted a place where they could truly be kids.

Childhood is so fleeting, and from the moment we set foot on campus, we felt that Norwood was a magical place where children were known and valued for who they were.

What we didn’t expect when choosing Norwood was the incredible community of friends we found along the way. It has been such a joy to connect with families, faculty, and staff who not only share our love for Norwood but care greatly for our children. The relationships we’ve built have added an unexpected layer of support, love, and connection that has made our Norwood experience even more special.

2024 Blue/White Day: And the Winner Is…

One of the most anticipated events of the school year is Blue/White Day, when Mr. Gould and the P.E. Department announce the winner of the annual Blue Team vs. White Team Challenge. On May 31, 2024, excitement filled the Rales Athletic Center as students, faculty, and staff awaited the big announcement.

Would it be the Blue Team or the White Team?

But first, how is the winner determined? According to Laini Bettencourt, Norwood’s physical education coordinator, points are awarded to each team based on performance and sportsmanship during Field Day competitions, as well as on the number of food items donated to the Blue/White Food Drive for Manna Food Center. “This year’s challenge was incredibly close,” shared Laini. “There was only a twopoint difference between the teams.”

Mr. Gould, who year after year is called upon to reveal the winning team with great fanfare, was again up for the challenge. This year’s reveal included a spirited chase with the Blue Hawk, who held a confetti cannon containing the winning team’s color. Finally gaining control, Mr. Gould got his hands on the 12

cannon and gave it a twist to release a shower of blue confetti, sparking enthusiastic cheers from half the student body!

The event also recognized the winners of this year’s Class Spirit Awards. Congratulations to the Class of 2028 (fourth grade) and the Class of 2027 (fifth grade)!

Manna Food Center, the largest food bank in Montgomery County, emerged as another winner. The Blue Team contributed 880 donations, while the White Team added 858, totaling an impressive 1,738 food items donated to help Manna combat hunger in our area. That’s a win for all!

Three Students Soar in the Stock Market Game

Need investment advice? A hot stock tip? Look no further than a group of three Norwood fifth graders (now sixth graders) who won their division in the Stock Market Game run by the Maryland Council on Economic Education last spring.

The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital markets that teaches students in grades 4-12 about the stock market, the American economic system, and the global economy. During the 10-week simulation, teams of up to

five students manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio as they research and apply their investment ideas in a real-world market context. Last year, approximately 17,700 students from 324 schools participated in the program.

Congratulations to the winning team, which was honored at an awards luncheon at Towson University on May 15, 2024. The team is now open for business to offer investment management advice—after school hours, of course!

Celebrating in Full Color!

SAANS HOSTS FIRST-EVER COMMUNITY-WIDE HOLI CELEBRATION

Holi is the Hindu festival that marks the end of winter, honors the triumph of good over evil, and celebrates the arrival of spring. This significant day brings people together for dancing, singing, and throwing colorful powders called galal. Holi is a time to commemorate connection and community, which is exactly what we celebrated at Norwood’s first-ever community-wide event for this important Hindu holiday.

after school on the field at the corner of River Road and Bradley Boulevard —an eye-catching sight for passing cars! Families, teachers, and staff members enjoyed traditional Holi foods, games, a photo booth, and the highlight activity: throwing colored powders at each other. Head of School Matthew Gould enthusiastically joined in and was, of course, a favorite target for the students.

Students who have grown up celebrating Holi had a blast sharing their traditions with friends and watching everyone experience the joy of this special festival. As Billy Vargas, director of diversity, equity, and community, remarked, “Holi is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of our shared humanity and the vibrant, diverse cultures that make our community so unique. Seeing everyone come together and embrace these traditions was truly heartwarming, and we are grateful to our generous SAANS families for sharing this wonderful experience.”

Campus News: Faculty Unique Summer Learning Experiences

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BOOSTS TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND ENRICHES STUDENT LEARNING

Professional development is highly valued at Norwood and an important part of growing as an educator. Each summer, many Norwood faculty members receive grants—Summer Innovation Grants, Henderson Grants, and Hudnut Grants—to develop new skills and knowledge through a wide variety of conferences, workshops, trainings, and field experiences.

The summer of 2024 proved to be another exciting time for professional development activities undertaken

by Norwood teachers. “I am always impressed with faculty work and exploration during the summer and how it enriches the learning experience in all grade levels and subject areas,” remarked Head of School Matthew Gould. “Norwood teachers are the perfect example of lifetime learners and are great role models for their students.” This summer’s PD highlights include: National Diversity Practitioners Institute (NDPI)

Media resource specialist, middle school librarian, and lead eighth grade advisor Kelly Dickinson, along with Fielding Winters in her new role as head of lower school, attended the three-day National Diversity Practitioners Institute held at Sandy Spring Friends School in June. The workshop provided a framework for engaging in best practices, strategic planning for the year ahead, one-onone and cohort mentoring sessions, and opportunities to network and share resources with other participants. Best of all, attendees receive ongoing mentoring from NDPI faculty for an entire year after the workshop. “NDPI was a fantastic experience,” said Fielding. “What a gift to have four days of uninterrupted time to focus on diversity work and to learn from practitioners representing schools all over the country. I’m feeling excited, energized, and full of ideas to share with my Norwood colleagues.”

Bringing Inquiry Journeys to Social Studies and History

As part of its ongoing review of the social studies and history curriculum, Norwood will be piloting a new inquiry-based program (InquirED) this year. Kindergarten teachers (Sarah Bickart, Sarah Lee, and Wendy Wilson), first grade teachers (Sarah Cali, Julia DiTillio Cable, Dana Egan, and Holly Simpson), fifth grade teachers (Kirby Mahoney, Sally Morsy, Tara Reilly, and Imalka Senadhira), sixth grade teachers (Carole Freret, Jack McCune, Neelam Minera, and Mimi Mulligan), and middle school history teachers (Kelly Dickinson, Craig Hollander, Mike Risen, Risa Seidman, and Billy Vargas) held grade-level meetings over the summer to plan new inquiry-based modules that promote sustained investigation, support a growth mindset, develop literacy skills, and use culturally responsive strategies that connect to students’ experiences and interests.

Studying Science Discoveries in Italy

Middle school science teacher Karen Saxe was awarded a Henderson Grant for travel to Northern Italy, where she explored the rich history and exciting foundational discoveries that support and shape her science program. Highlights of her packed itinerary included visiting the Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, studying the wonder of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa in Tuscany, and touring the Museo Galileo in Florence with its vast collection of scientific instruments and artifacts from the Renaissance and early modern periods: telescopes, globes, and manuscripts that highlight the development of scientific thought and discovery. “This incredible trip has inspired me to bring a new level of wonder and curiosity into my classroom,” Karen remarked.

“It was a powerful reminder of how far we have come in understanding our world and the importance of fostering a spirit of exploration in our students, especially in science.”

Exploring Math Instruction in Singapore

Fifth grade advisor and math teacher Imalka Senadhira put her Henderson

Grant to work in Singapore, where she visited two schools to observe math instruction and meet with math teachers. Imalka shared some of her Norwood students’ math workbooks with Singaporean math teachers and reports that they were very impressed! She looks forward to sharing her observations with her math colleagues and looking at ways some of them can be incorporated into our program.

After Singapore, Imalka traveled to Kuala Lumpur to tour a Buddhist temple, a Hindu temple, and the oldest mosque in Malaysia. Her experiences will benefit the fifthgrade social studies program that includes the study of the five major world religions. Her students will undoubtedly love hearing about the adorable monkeys that inhabit the 400-million-year-old Batu Caves, a temple inside a cave!

After long and successful careers at Norwood, four faculty members completed their final year of teaching in June and are off to some exciting new adventures.

2024 Spring Musical: Seussical Jr. “Oh, the thinks you can think! When your thinks have run dry, in the blink of an eye there’s another think there!” The Norwood community had plenty to think about after seeing this year’s spring musical, Seussical Jr., performed by our seventh and eighth graders May 2-4, 2024. From the impressive acting and incredible set design to the sophisticated dance numbers and powerful solos, the production excelled on every front. From start to finish, Seussical was a shining example of the power of theater to bring people together to celebrate the joy of the imagination, the specialness of being unique, and the importance of standing up for your beliefs. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew, as well as to their fearless leader, director Stephen Crisp, and his incredible support team: Craig Hollander (assistant director), Kirby Mahoney (lights and sound), and Karen Harvey (backstage manager).

To gain further insight into the creative process behind this exceptional production, we sat down with director Stephen Crisp, who shared his reflections on the experience:

How did Seussical resonate with the themes and values you hoped to emphasize through the production?

The show brilliantly blends the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss with profound messages about inclusivity, imagination, and the importance of standing up for what is right.

We wanted to highlight the significance of community and the power of believing in oneself, which are central to the storyline. By bringing these themes to life, we hoped to encourage audiences to embrace their uniqueness and to advocate for others, just as the characters in Seussical do. The production serves as a reminder that no matter how small, every voice and individual matters.

What educational opportunities did Seussical offer our students in terms of acting, singing, and overall performance skills?

The diverse cast of characters allowed students to explore a range of emotions and personalities, enhancing their acting abilities using physicality, voice modulation, and character development. The musical’s varied score offered a chance to tackle different musical styles and harmonies, which helped students improve their vocal techniques and musicality. Additionally, the high-energy ensemble numbers and choreography challenged students to work on their timing, coordination, and stage presence. Overall, Seussical was an invaluable experience that helped our students grow as well-rounded performers.

Were there any particular scenes or musical numbers that stood out as especially challenging or rewarding for the cast and crew?

One of the most challenging was Solla Sollew, which required the ensemble to blend their voices harmoniously while conveying a sense of longing and hope through their acting.

Coordinating the intricate choreography and staging for The Circus McGurkus was also quite a feat, as it demanded precise timing and high energy from everyone involved.

Big Wins at the Hersheypark Music Festival!

Norwood’s middle school strings and band ensembles practically needed a second bus to bring home the many awards they received at the adjudicated Hersheypark Music Festival on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Under the direction of strings teacher Devon Oviedo and band teacher Joe Cunliffe, the musicians were recognized with nine awards for their stellar performances.

What were some of your challenges you faced while directing the show?

One of the main challenges was bringing Dr. Seuss’s whimsical world to life on stage in a way that felt both imaginative and cohesive. Balancing the fantastical elements with the show’s deeper messages required careful attention to detail in both the staging and the performances.

Which elements of the production seemed to resonate most with our community?

Definitely the messages of inclusivity, the power of imagination, and the importance of standing up for others. The story’s central theme, that “a person’s a person, no matter how small,” really struck a chord, emphasizing the value of every individual in our community. Many were touched by Horton’s unwavering kindness and determination, which inspired conversations about empathy and resilience. The vibrant, imaginative world of Seussical also allowed for creative expression and brought a sense of joy and togetherness to everyone involved. It was wonderful to see how the musical not only entertained but also sparked meaningful reflections within our community.

Devon and Joe proudly shared the following about the experience, “Our kids brought it! We can’t stop raving about how well they represented Norwood.

“Little Free Library” Comes to Norwood

Books and reading are celebrated everywhere at Norwood—in the libraries and classrooms, at chapel and D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time, and just about anywhere else we can squeeze in a good story.

Last spring, we were thrilled to add one more place to share our love of books and reading: our very own Little Free Library (LFL).

The concept of a Little Free Library is simple yet profound. It operates on the principle of “take a book, donate a book,” encouraging a cycle of reading and sharing among individuals of all ages. Norwood’s LFL became a reality through lower school librarian Liz Gray, the Parents Association’s Library Guild, and a book-loving first grader who built and painted the structure!

Conveniently located in the Steuart Courtyard near the entrance to the Marsh Building, the LFL has become a popular place to check for new books and donate books you no longer need. It’s just one more way the Norwood community comes together to nurture a love for reading along with a sense of curiosity and exploration among our students.

Class Charity Report: 8th Graders Raise Funds for Comfort Cases

Each year, eighth graders research and select a charity to support with various fundraising activities throughout their final year at Norwood. The Class of 2024 chose Comfort Cases, a nonprofit organization based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, that provides support to children entering the foster care system.

On any given day, there are approximately 437,500 children in foster care in the U.S. Most of them arrive with little more than the clothes on their backs. If they do have personal belongings, they are given a trash bag in which to carry them. Comfort Cases provides children with backpacks filled with items like new pajamas, a new blanket, and a new stuffed animal to help make the transition a little easier.

The eighth graders’ main fundraiser was a raffle where the coveted prize was the chance to throw a pie at a teacher. Students in both divisions purchased raffle tickets for $1 each, and then, on May 24, 2024, with the entire school community gathered outside, raffle tickets were drawn,

and each winner came forward to throw a pie. We are grateful to the six teachers who bravely volunteered to take a hit for a great cause: Bat Boulandi (lower school art), Stephen Crisp (middle school drama), Dana Egan (first grade), Craig Hollander (middle school history), Max Nolin (middle school dean and music), and Emily Weiner (director of student support services).

How you lead your life matters, even if it means taking a pie in the face!

In total, the Class of 2024 raised $2,170.99 to help Comfort Cases make a meaningful difference in the lives of children in foster care. That’s what we call a smashing success!

The Class of 2025 has selected the Adolescent Self-Injury Foundation as their class charity during the 2024-2025 school year. This nonprofit organization was created to offer hope in the recovery process for adolescent and young adult selfinjurers and their families.

Local Hockey Hero Charlie Lindgren Visits with PK & Kindergarten Excitement buzzed throughout the School as local hockey star Charlie Lindgren, goaltender for the Washington Capitals, paid a special visit to the Lower School on May 8, 2024. Known for his impressive saves and quick reflexes on the ice, Charlie brought his winning spirit to campus, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

During his visit with PK and kindergarten students, Charlie, wearing his Caps jersey, shared stories of his journey to becoming a professional hockey player, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and teamwork. His young fans had a lot of questions— some on topic and others that fell in the miscellaneous category—which he graciously answered!

At the end of the visit, students surrounded the hockey star, asking for his autograph on backpacks, water bottles, thermoses, lunch bags, and just about anything they could find. We are so appreciative of his time and his kindness and patience with these little fans—and a few of our big fans too!

New Trustees Welcome to Our New Trustees Norwood is fortunate to have an outstanding board of trustees that works tirelessly to support the School’s educational program and mission. This year, the board is pleased to welcome five new trustees who bring a wealth of valuable expertise, knowledge, and love for Norwood School: Anas Abuzaakouk, Mary Kwak, Jay Sayko, Ellen Spiegel, and Chrissy Tagaris (PA President).

Anas Abuzaakouk currently serves as chief executive officer of BAWAG Group, a publicly listed European bank, a role he has held since 2017. Previously, Anas served as chief financial officer and chief restructuring officer within the organization. Before that, he worked for General Electric and Cerberus. With a career spanning more than 25 years in 30 different countries, Anas has extensive experience in corporate finance, banking, and private equity sectors. In these different areas, Anas has been responsible for a variety of operational and financial roles ranging from strategy, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, business development, finance, and capital management.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from the University of Maryland Smith School of Business, graduating magna cum laude. Anas and his wife, Alena, have three children, including Maya ’28 and Noura ’31.

Mary Kwak is a former Norwood parent whose daughters Celia ’17 and Lucie ’19 attended the School from kindergarten through eighth grade. Mary is a board member at Philanos, the national network of women’s collective giving groups, former board member at Horizons Greater Washington, and board president at Many Hands.

An active supporter of the local nonprofit community, she serves as a reviewer for Spur Local and the

Unfunded List and as a volunteer strategy consultant for Compass Pro Bono. She previously worked in publishing at the Brookings Institution and in research at Harvard Business School. She is coauthor of Judo Strategy: Turning Your Competitors’ Strength to Your Advantage (HBS Press, 2001). As a Norwood parent, Mary volunteered in many roles, including PA president and co-chair of Parents of Students of Color. She received her A.B. and A.M. in government from Harvard University and earned an Executive Certificate in Philanthropic Leadership at Georgetown University.

Jay Sayko is a managing director and the financial crimes leader in the corporate and investment banking division at Wells Fargo. Prior to his current role, he was the head of financial crimes control for Institutional Banking and Payments, and previously, while living in Hong Kong, he was the Asia Pacific head of financial crimes risk management, responsible for the financial crimes program across 15 jurisdictions in the region. While in Hong Kong, Jay also served on the Board of Help for Children Asia, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. Before joining Wells Fargo, he worked at JPMorgan in Hong Kong as a relationship executive in the Financial Institutions Group and in the Legal and Compliance Department in New York. Jay is a lawyer by training and began his career at the Monmouth County (New Jersey) Prosecutor’s Office.

He earned a J.D. from the George Washington University Law School and a B.A. from the University of

Southern California. Jay and his wife, Erica, are parents of Nate ’29 and Kiki ’33.

Ellen Spiegel has enjoyed a 25-year career in fundraising and event management.

She served in various capacities, including executive director for 10 years, at Knock Out Abuse Against Women, a nonprofit organization serving as a champion for women and children impacted by domestic abuse. Ellen also spearheaded fundraising activities for Fight For Children’s signature events: Fight Night and School Night which raised more than $5 million annually for local healthcare and education organizations. Over the past 15 years, she has volunteered in many capacities, including board chair of Beth-El Preschool and Concord Hill School as well as a board member of the nonprofit Chess Challenge. Ellen currently serves as a trustee of Holton-Arms School and is an auction specialist and advancement committee member at Concord Hill School.

At Norwood, she has been a grade-level representative, VP of community outreach, and, for the past two years, has been co-chair of the “A Night for Norwood” event.

Ellen and her husband, Adam, are parents of Max ’27 and Chloe, a tenth grader at Holton-Arms.

Chrissy Bonanno Tagaris (ex officio) has spent the last 20 years as an organizer and public servant. Starting her career in local politics, she worked

on campaigns for governor, state legislature, and mayor before moving into municipal government.

She served as deputy mayor for economic development for the City of New Haven, where she oversaw seven departments and acted as the liaison to the Housing Authority, Tweed New Haven Regional Airport Authority, the New Haven Parking Authority, the Port Authority, and the Economic Development Corporation of New Haven. She served on the boards of the Connecticut Tennis Association, the Shubert Theater, and R Kids. Upon relocating to Washington, D.C., she worked as assistant director of AmericaWorks, an organization focused on improving the lives of working people and rebuilding the middle class. In recent years, Chrissy has redirected her efforts toward education-related volunteerism. Chrissy received her B.A. in history from Yale University.

She and her husband, Tim, live in Bethesda with their two daughters, Addison ’27 and Arianna ’29, and their dog, Sweetie.

A Day to Remember: Music, Speeches, & Awards at Class Day 2024 Class Day at Norwood is a special celebration to commemorate the graduating class as they share memories, receive awards, and enjoy a few final performances on the Norwood stage. This year’s Class Day, held June 4, 2024, featured eight student speeches, each one reflecting upon special Norwood memories, experiences, teachers, and friendships, as well as hopes and plans for life after Norwood. The poise and confidence of each speaker was indeed impressive, and we look forward to seeing the many ways they use their stellar public-speaking skills in the future.

Excerpts from Class Day speeches: SOPHIE AMINI Be known. That’s one of the mottos of our school, and for me, Norwood lives up to this every day. It is a value that when we are younger, we might almost take for granted— that our teachers all know our names and our personalities and our strengths, and, yes, even our weaknesses. But as we get older, it’s actually now our responsibility to make sure that others, especially younger students, feel known by us.

SOPHIE DEIBLER I have really grown as a student and have been challenged academically. While at the time I was not enjoying the challenge very much, now that I look back, I see how well Norwood has prepared me for the future. I feel like I have been given a head start.

PATRICK JOSEPH While I have been at Norwood for nine years, it sure doesn’t feel like it. I still remember my eighth grade buddy, Liam. When I met my kindergarten buddy this year, 20

I realized my journey at Norwood had come full circle. These years have been some of the best in my life. Whether you’re a teacher, a student, or parent, cherish wherever you are in life, take time to enjoy it, and live life to the fullest.

CAITLIN JOYCE How you lead your life matters.

These are the first few words I saw when I came here. At first, I just thought, “Oh, it’s just some silly school thing,” but in reality, it’s much more. I have learned that how I lead my life really does matter—it affects my future, my friendships, and the opportunities I may receive.

AARIA NEWATIA I cannot leave Norwood without expressing my gratitude towards the people who guided me through Middle School. I first want to thank my teachers; you all are truly the reason why I am leaving Norwood confidently. When I think of my teachers I think of them like candles, they consume themselves to provide light for others.

CLAUDIA PIRAINO No words will ever express the love I have for this school. The teachers know when to push me but will never let me fall. My classmates support me and help me when I need it most. Norwood has prepared me for all that lies in front of me. I am forever grateful to my parents for choosing Norwood for me, as it has built me up into the person I am today. ZACH PROBER When I walked in these doors five years ago, I was not known. I was a new student after all. But I realize now that I also didn’t know myself. Celebrating the Class of 2024!

On the morning of Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the 47 members of the Class of 2024 enjoyed their final hours together as Norwood students. Before the start of the Commencement ceremony, they posed in front of the Steuart Building for the traditional class photo; they walked down to the playground to ring the Norwood Bell once last time; and they walked together through the doors of the Rales Athletic Center where family, friends, faculty, staff, and students in grades K-7 awaited their arrival with great excitement and anticipation. Yes, it was bittersweet, but it was mostly celebratory as we watched these impressive students take their final bow on the Norwood stage.

“Let’s not forget that you are a class that had to traverse through your middle elementary years during a global pandemic. You had to ‘go to class’ in your bedrooms, navigate remote school, persevere through what was an incredibly anxious time for us all. Commencement Remarks: A Lesson in Joy Good morning graduates, parents, family and friends, students, and faculty and staff. Welcome to this joyous acknowledgment of the Class of 2024. Seventy-two years ago, founder Frances Marsh’s vision for Norwood was to create a happy place for learning. If you substitute the word joyful for happy, there is no deviation from her original intent for Norwood. To be joyful is one of the seven attributes of a Norwood graduate: A Norwood graduate is an enthusiastic learner who welcomes new opportunities and celebrates both their own accomplishments and those of others. Mr. Gould often shares that we find joy in students’ accomplishments. We are all here today to bask in the joy of your achievement.

You have probably noticed that I mentioned the word joy several times. I want to share a few thoughts about this essential human emotion. Recently, I picked up my well-worn copy of a book I read a few years ago titled, The Book of Joy. The book is a wonderful chronicling of a week-long conversation that took place in 2015 between His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

These two spiritual giants spent their time enthusiastically discussing one of life’s most important questions: How do we find joy despite challenges, setbacks, and suffering?

So, what does building joy that will carry you through any of life’s experiences have to do with all of you in this milestone moment? Here is why I think joy is important. The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu explained the difference between joy and happiness. You see, happiness is often dependent on external circumstances, while joy is not. Joy is a state of mind and heart.

Now, all of you will undoubtedly experience emotions that are barriers to joy, such as fear, anxiety, sadness, loss, and grief. I want you to see 24

these obstacles as adversities that present you with opportunities to grow. Challenges bring joyful experiences into sharper focus.

The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu discussed eight pillars they believe are vital to building a life filled with enduring joy. I want to highlight three of these eight pillars that I think reflect the Class of 2024.

Humor: As you get ready to embark on your high school journey, I want you to remember one of the most important tools you have acquired during your middle school years: your sense of humor.

Our trip last week to New York City—need I say more? You are well versed in the power of humor to connect us, allowing us to laugh together, at ourselves, and to not take life too seriously. As you move forward, I urge you to carry this gift with you. A good laugh can make even the toughest moments a little bit easier and celebrations that much sweeter.

Humility: Humility is essential to joy because it allows you to recognize your gifts while celebrating the gifts of others. Humility is not false modesty. True humility is knowing your worth and acknowledging the worth of those around you. Now, in general, you might think being humble and modest and the fourteen-yearold brain are at odds. Yet, I have witnessed you being remarkably humble in ways that might surprise those who underestimate you. I have seen you acknowledge the strengths of your peers, celebrate each other’s successes, and step aside to let others shine. Whether it’s cheering for a classmate’s achievement, working collaboratively on projects, or offering support without seeking recognition, you have demonstrated self-less maturity. I hope you will continue lifting up those around you while creating a community where everyone feels valued and respected.

Compassion: Compassion is the final piece of the joy puzzle. While it is easy to think of self-centeredness as a typical teenage trait, I have observed immense compassion from each one of you. Compassion connects empathy to acts of kindness and generosity. Whether helping address food insecurity through Families4Families, raising money for Comfort Cases, or the countless acts of kindness—helping a friend study for a test, explaining a tough concept, being a good friend, or how you tenderly engaged with your kindergarten buddies—your compassion is evident.

As you move through your high school years and beyond, I want to leave you with this thought about joy. Joy isn’t just an emotion but an intentional way of how you lead your life.

I hope you will cling closely to these three pillars: finding humor in everyday moments, always recognizing your worth and the worth of others, and allowing your compassion to guide your actions. These qualities will bring joy to your life and to those around you.

Let me also leave you with the poignant words of the 17th-century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza: “The only permanent happiness is the pursuit of knowledge and the joy of understanding.”

Jessie Thompson’s passion for sports ignited during her early years at Norwood and has been a defining thread throughout her life. From her days playing soccer, lacrosse, and hockey at Holton-Arms School and the University of Richmond to her coaching positions that began in college, Jessie’s dedication to sports and physical fitness has been unwavering. Today, as senior manager of youth hockey development for the Washington Capitals, she channels her love of the game into creating transformative opportunities for young athletes. Jessie’s journey is a testament to how the spirit of sport can shape and elevate lives.

Can you describe the path to your current position as senior manager of youth hockey development for the Washington Capitals?

About halfway through my undergraduate time at the University of Richmond, I still didn’t know exactly what career path I wanted to take. One of the first days of my junior year, I was in a leadership studies class and my professor asked us, “Who are three people, outside of your immediate family members, who have helped to shape the person you are today the most?” Without hesitation, the three people I wrote down happened to be coaches. In that moment, I realized that sports have been such an important part of my life and that one day, I wanted to make an impact on players like those coaches did for me! After graduation, I went on to pursue my master’s degree in sports industry management at Georgetown University, and during my time in graduate school, I was fortunate enough to be a marketing intern with the Washington Capitals. Four different roles and over nine years later, here I am!

What does a typical day look like?

No two days are the same! Most weekdays I am planning events, coordinating programming, speaking to community members (rink partners, parents, players, coaches, etc.), and working with our incredible team on upcoming projects. On the weekends, I am usually on the ice coaching, working an event, or enjoying a day off with family and friends.

What changes have you seen in opportunities available for girls and women in hockey?

I could talk for hours about this topic, but the growth in opportunities for women and girls has been exponential over the past decade, and specifically the past few years. For the first time in history,

there is a legitimate professional league for women, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), and a young girl’s dream to play professionally can finally come true. Hockey is a sport that provides leadership skills, teamwork, and friendship, and seeing the growth of the sport and opportunities for women and girls is incredible.

What initiatives have you implemented to promote equity and inclusivity in youth hockey?

Our organization is dedicated to providing safe, accessible, and inclusive opportunities to play, whether they be on the ice or off the ice. On the ice, we have implemented programs such as our Rising Stars Academy, which is dedicated to providing free elite skill development to players and families of color.

Programs and events within our ALL CAPS ALL HER platform provide women and girls opportunities they may likely not have elsewhere and are open to anyone who feels safe and comfortable in our programs, including non-binary, transgender, gender fluid, or cisgender women.

Off the ice, we provide free or low-cost ball hockey and inline hockey programming in various communities throughout the area.

What are some of the key achievements or milestones in your career that you are most proud of?

I am incredibly lucky that, in my job, I get to see the impact that I (alongside the rest of our amazing team) am making on a daily basis, whether they be big achievements or small wins. On a larger scale, I am incredibly proud and honored that this summer, our ALL CAPS ALL HER platform won an NHL Stanley award for best Social Impact and Growth Initiative within the entire NHL. On a smaller scale, there is one testimonial from a former player that I will never forget! One of our very first participants in our ALL

CAPS ALL HER Adult Learn to Play program was Lexi. Lexi is the sweetest person and participated in our Learn to Play program for an entire year—before that, they had never stepped on the ice before.

Flash forward to about a year later, I went to watch one of Lexi’s first games that they were playing in a real hockey league. Lexi scored an amazing goal and after the game, they came up to me and gave me a HUGE hug and said, “Jessie! Did you see that?! That goal is because of you—I play hockey because of you!

I never felt like there was a safe and inclusive place for me to learn and play; thank you for creating that for me and others.”

Do you have any advice for Norwood students who are interested in trying a new sport?

It’s okay to be nervous or scared!

Oftentimes, I see parents of first-time hockey players saying, “Just get on the ice!” or “Just go do it!” When in reality, it’s more than okay to be scared or nervous trying something new. If you can overcome the nerves and step outside your comfort zone, you might just find a sport you love!

How about some advice for parents as they watch their child explore a new sport?

Your job is to be your child’s biggest fan, whether they play for one minute or the whole game. Your child will model the behavior that you display. Be positive, encouraging, respectful to coaches and officials, and lift your child up throughout every step of their fun and exciting new adventure.

What do you recall about your P.E. classes at Norwood? Do you remember the “self-win”?

I remember P.E. classes at Norwood fondly, and I could NEVER forget the self-win! I actually think about the self-win often and think that it applies to so many different aspects of adult life. In my professional career, there are times when we have

had big wins, but there are also times when we have tried something, and it just didn’t work. It is easy to be frustrated and disappointed, but being able to find the self-win in those experiences and use failure as a learning opportunity is invaluable.

What are some of your favorite Norwood memories?

Another topic I could go on for days about! Norwood was the first place I ever experienced a true sense of community, and I absolutely loved starting every single morning with chapel. Chapel connected everyone, gave each day a positive start, and I personally loved singing songs all together. Norwood is also where I met one of the best friends I have ever had, who I actually wrote my college admissions essay about!

What would you tell a Norwood student who is interested in pursuing a career in sports management or other sports business program?

It’s okay not to have your dream job at first! The sports industry is very small, but there are so many avenues and opportunities within the industry. Many people wanting to get into the industry focus on applying only for the exact job they want, rather than taking internships or jobs in different avenues of the industry that may provide valuable experience towards a dream job.

Learn as much as you can, stay true to your passions, and be yourself!

Do you still play hockey? Where can you be found when you’re not working?

I don’t play hockey formally in a league anymore, but I coach different teams and programs that keep me on the ice 5-6 days a week! When I’m not working, I can be found adventuring or snuggling with my dog, Phoebe, reading (big bookworm here), spending time with my family and two nieces (my sister is a Norwood alum as well!), and going outside as much as possible!

Lolly Ward is deep into the college application season with her oldest, a composer, and learning all there is to know about music portfolios. Lolly co-founded and directs LineStorm Playwrights and is recording songs from her first musical with a local Portland, Oregon, composer, so stay tuned for Cessaur, the magical, mythological story of how Ireland was born. She welcomes anyone who wants to visit the Pacific Northwest.

Alexa Adams has just launched clean transdermal vitamin patches with her wellness brand, barrière. She and her partner spent two years developing the technology and unique artwork in collaboration with a lab in the U.K. These patches are available at retailers including Anthropologie, Canyon Ranch, and Walgreens, among others. Barrière’s vitamin patches have also recently launched on Amazon, featuring mini formulations: the Hello Sunshine vitamin D3 patch (36-pack) and the Energy Boost vitamin B12 patch (36-pack).

Ted Dove reports that after nine and a half years living in Edinburgh, UK, the last six and a half of which have consisted of lecturing at the University of Edinburgh, he moved to Dublin, Ireland, in July to take up the post of professor of law at Maynooth University, where he will focus his research and teaching in the area of health law, privacy law, and research ethics governance.

Kate Sanford is thrilled that her daughter, Josie, joined Norwood’s kindergarten class this fall. She is also honored to have become the godmother to children of her Norwood best friends Lizzy Doyle and Marcy Tickner and to have been awarded Long and Foster Real Estate’s Rookie of the Year sales associate for Montgomery County!

Will Dobud, Ph.D., is an instructor in social work at Charles Sturt University in Australia. He is co-authoring his third book on social work.

Matt Daley and his wife, Kristina, welcomed their daughter, Madelyn Grace Penny Daley, on July 30, 2024, in Pasadena, California. Norwood’s lower school violin teacher Moyna Daley is one proud grandma!

Bryan Goldman married Claire Min-Venditti on June 15, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia.

Ben Hammer was also married on June 15, 2024! He and Kate Ballinger enjoyed a wedding in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, surrounded by lots of colorful flowers, people enjoying picnics, and the dog run. Lauren Barlow ’07 and Becca Pollard ’20 experienced a “small world” moment at the Harvard dormitory where they reside when they discovered they are both Norwood alums!

Lauren, a resident advisor in the dorm, is also the assistant director of admissions at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she earned a master’s degree in education, leadership, organizations, and entrepreneurship in 2022. Becca is a first-year undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering. The two Blue Hawks reside in Wigglesworth Hall in Harvard Yard.

Rob Heartfield recently got engaged to Shelby Bardet of Marietta, Georgia. The couple lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Rob works in logistics and Shelby is the facilities manager and creative director for a goldendoodle breeder. They are aiming for a September 2025 wedding.

Grace Hansen-Gilmour graduated from The Potomac School in 2012, Harvard University in 2016, worked at White and Case in Paris for the next two years, then at TDC in Boston, before receiving her MBA from Yale’s School of Management in 2022.

She has worked for the Federal Government since then and is living in D.C.

Gary Awkard is a graduate of Moorehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently works as an IT project lead at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan and is pursuing an IT certificate program at Georgetown University.

Emily Marsteller and her husband, Jamie Duguid, welcomed son Iain Robert Duguid on June 21, 2024, at Sibley Hospital. Iain is named after his two grandfathers and is the grandson of former special assistant to the head of school Maralyn Marsteller. Two of Iain’s first visitors at the hospital were classmates Margaret Gill and Caroline Webster.

Ben Malmgren and Hana Yarbrough were married on June 21, 2024, in Ridge, Maryland.

The couple lives in Cambridge, Maryland, where Ben is finishing up his master’s degree in marine

estuarine environmental science at the University of Maryland’s Horn Point Laboratory.

Sydney Giunta graduated from Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication on May 10, 2024, with a major in art direction and advertising.

Liam Moynihan is participating in the co-op program at Drexel University’s Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship.

Luwa Tejuoso attended Indian Mountain School and Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut after leaving Norwood. He is currently an undergraduate student at New York University.

Lawrence Li and Kylie Wilbur visited Norwood in May and joined a strings class to sightread with fifth graders. The younger students loved having them in class!

Naman Gupta hosted the Acton Children’s Business Fair at the Shoppes at Wisconsin Place in Chevy Chase in May. The marketplace event provides an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to develop and showcase their business ideas.

Naman reports that the event attracted about 30 businesses and 35 entrepreneurs.

2021

Asher (Alex) Barrs now lives in Hershey, Pennsylvania, with his dad, Gerry Barrs, former Summit director at Norwood. Asher started at Pennsylvania College of Art and Design as a dual enrollment student, majoring in live experience design and production.

Asher is excited to graduate from high school in spring 2025.

Isabel Lustbader and Rebecca Eigner enjoyed a Norwood reunion of sorts at a tennis match earlier this fall between Maret and Bullis. Isabel plays for Maret, and Rebecca plays for Bullis.
